Abstract
Developing efficient oxygen evolution catalysts (OECs) made from earth-abundant elements is extremely important since the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with sluggish kinetics hinders the development of many energy-related electrochemical devices. Herein, an efficient strategy is developed to prepare conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with abundant and uniform coordination sites by coupling the N-rich organic monomer 2,4,6-tris(5-bromopyrimidin-2-yl)-1,3,5-triazine (TBPT) with Co(II) porphyrin. The resulting CMP-Py(Co) is further metallized with Co2+ ions to obtain CMP-Py(Co)@Co. Structural characterization results reveal that CMP-Py(Co)@Co has higher Co2+ content (12.20 wt %) and affinity toward water compared with CMP-Py(Co). Moreover, CMP-Py(Co)@Co exhibits an excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 285 mV vs RHE at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 80.1 mV dec-1, which are significantly lower than those of CMP-Py(Co) (335 mV vs RHE and 96.8 mV dec-1). More interestingly, CMP-Py(Co)@Co outperforms most reported porous organic polymer-based OECs and the benchmark RuO2 catalyst (320 mV vs RHE and 87.6 mV dec-1). Additionally, Co2+-free CMP-Py(2H) has negligible OER activity. Thereby, the enhanced OER activity of CMP-Py(Co)@Co is attributed to the incorporation of Co2+ ions leading to rich active sites and enlarged electrochemical surface areas. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Co2+-TBPT sites have higher activity than Co2+-porphyrin sites for the OER. These results indicate that the introduction of rich active metal sites in stable and conductive CMPs could provide novel guidance for designing efficient OECs.

Impact of Bidentate Pyridyl-Mesoionic Carbene Ligands: Structural, (Spectro)Electrochemical, Photophysical, and Theoretical Investigations on Ruthenium(II) Complexes. ACS ORGANIC & INORGANIC AU 2023; 3:184-198. Abstract
We present here new synthetic strategies for the isolation of a series of Ru(II) complexes with pyridyl-mesoionic carbene ligands (MIC) of the 1,2,3-triazole-5-ylidene type, in which the bpy ligands (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) of the archetypical [Ru(bpy)3]2+ have been successively replaced by one, two, or three pyridyl-MIC ligands. Three new complexes have been isolated and investigated via NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The incorporation of one MIC unit shifts the potential of the metal-centered oxidation about 160 mV to more cathodic potential in cyclic voltammetry, demonstrating the extraordinary σ-donor ability of the pyridyl-MIC ligand, while the π-acceptor capacities are dominated by the bpy ligand, as indicated by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroelectrochemistry (EPR-SEC). The replacement of all bpy ligands by the pyridyl-MIC ligand results in an anoidic shift of the ligand-centered reduction by 390 mV compared to the well-established [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complex. In addition, UV/vis/NIR-SEC in combination with theoretical calculations provided detailed insights into the electronic structures of the respective redox states, taking into account the total number of pyridyl-MIC ligands incorporated in the Ru(II) complexes. The luminescence quantum yield and lifetimes were determined by time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy. An estimation of the excited state redox potentials conclusively showed that the pyridyl-MIC ligand can tune the photoredox activity of the isolated complexes to stronger photoreductants. These observations can provide new strategies for the design of photocatalysts and photosensitizers based on MICs.

Abstract
A supramolecular self-assembly of semiconducting polymers and small molecules plays an important role in charge transportation, performance, and lifetime of an optoelectronic device. Tremendous efforts have been put into the strategies to self-organize these materials. In this regard, here, we present the self-organization of terthiophene and its methyl alcohol derivative with 4,4'-bipyridine (44BiPy). An unexpected 2D layered organization of 5,5″-dimethyl-2,2':5',2″-terthiophene (DM3T) and 44BiPy was obtained and analyzed. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that DM3T and 44BiPy consist of stacked, almost independent, infinite 2D layers while held together by weak hydrogen bonds. In addition to this peculiar supramolecular arrangement of these compounds, the investigation of their photophysical properties showed strong fluorescence quenching of DM3T by 44BiPy in the solid state, suggesting an efficient charge transfer. On the other hand, the methyl alcohol derivative of terthiophene, DM3TMeOH, organized in a closed cyclic motif with 44BiPy via hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
Photocatalytic CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals is a promising route but remains challenging due to poor product selectivity. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as an emerging class of porous materials are considered as promising candidates for photocatalysis. Incorporating metallic sites into COF is a successful strategy to realize high photocatalytic activities. Herein, 2,2'-bipyridine-based COF bearing non-noble single Cu sites is fabricated by chelating coordination of dipyridyl units for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The coordinated single Cu sites not only significantly enhance light harvesting and accelerate electron-hole separation but also provide adsorption and activation sites for CO2 molecules. As a proof of concept, the Cu-Bpy-COF as a representative catalyst exhibits superior photocatalytic activity for reducing CO2 to CO and CH4 without photosensitizer, and impressively, the product selectivity of CO and CH4 can be readily modulated only by changing reaction media. Experimental and theoretical results reveal the crucial role of single Cu sites in promoting photoinduced charge separation and solvent effect in regulating product selectivity, which provides an important sight onto the design of COF photocatalysts for selective CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract
Coordination complexes may act as anticancer agents. Among others, the formation of the complex may facilitate the ligand uptake by the cell. Searching for new copper compounds with cytotoxic activity, the complex Cu-dipicolinate was studied as a neutral scaffold to form ternary complexes with diimines. A series of [Cu(dipicolinate)(diimine)] complexes (where diimine: Phenanthroline, phen, 5-NO2-phenanthroline, 4-methyl-phenanthroline, neocuproine, 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-phenanthroline, tmp, bathophenanthroline, bipyridine, dimethyl-bipyridine, as well as the ligand 2,2-dipyridil-amine, bam) were synthesized and characterized both in the solid state, including a new crystal structure of [Cu2(dipicolinate)2(tmp)2]·7H2O. Their chemistry in aqueous solution was explored by UV/vis spectroscopy, conductivity, cyclic voltammetry, and electron paramagnetic resonance studies. Their DNA binding was analyzed by electronic spectroscopy (determining Kb values), circular dichroism, and viscosity methods. The cytotoxicity of the complexes was assessed on human cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 (breast, the first triple negative), A549 (lung epithelial) and A2780cis (ovarian, Cisplatin-resistant), and non-tumor cell lines MRC-5 (lung) and MCF-10A (breast). The major species are ternary, in solution and solid state. Complexes are highly cytotoxic as compared to Cisplatin. Complexes containing bam and phen are interesting candidates to study their in vivo activity in triple-negative breast cancer treatment.

Abstract
The introduction of basic groups in the polybenzimidazole (PBI) main chain or side chain with low phosphoric acid doping is an effective way to avoid the trade-off between proton conductivity and mechanical strength for high temperature proton exchange membrane (HT-PEM). In this study, the ethyl imidazole is grafted on the side chain of the PBI containing bipyridine in the main chain and blended with poly(2,2′-[p-oxydiphenylene]-5,5′-benzimidazole) (OPBI) to obtain a series of PBI composite membranes for HT-PEMs. The effects of the introduction of bipyridine in the main chain and the ethyl imidazole in the side chain on proton transport are investigated. The result suggests that the introduction of the imidazole and bipyridine group can effectively improve the comprehensive properties as HT-PEM. The highest of proton conductivity of the obtained membranes under saturated phosphoric acid (PA) doping can be up to 0.105 S cm−1 at 160 °C and the maximum output power density is 836 mW cm−2 at 160 °C, which is 2.3 times that of the OPBI membrane. Importantly, even at low acid doping content (~178%), the tensile strength of the membrane is 22.2 MPa, which is nearly 2 times that of the OPBI membrane, the proton conductivity of the membrane achieves 0.054 S cm−1 at 160 °C, which is 2.3 times that of the OPBI membrane, and the maximum output power density of a single cell is 540 mW cm−2 at 160 °C, which is 1.5 times that of the OPBI membrane. The results suggest that the introduction of a large number of nitrogen-containing sites in the main chain and side chain is an efficient way to improve the proton conductivity, even at a low PA doping level.

Abstract
Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are a class of porous organic polymers that continuously attract growing interest because of their outstanding chemical and physical properties. However, the control of extended porous organic framework structures at the molecular scale for a precise adjustment of their properties has hardly been achieved so far. Here, we present a series of bipyridine-based CTFs synthesized through polycondensation, in which the sequence of specific building blocks is well controlled. The reported synthetic strategy allows us to tailor the physicochemical features of the CTF materials, including the nitrogen content, the apparent specific surface area, and optoelectronic properties. Based on a comprehensive analytical investigation, we demonstrate a direct correlation of the CTF bipyridine content with the material features such as the specific surface area, band gap, charge separation, and surface wettability with water. The entirety of these parameters dictates the catalytic activity as demonstrated for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The material with the optimal balance between optoelectronic properties and highest hydrophilicity enables HER production rates of up to 7.2 mmol/(h·g) under visible light irradiation and in the presence of a platinum cocatalyst.

Abstract
Copper (II) complexes containing mixed ligands were synthesized in dimethyl formamide (DMF). The intense cyan emission at an ambient temperature is observed for solid copper (II) complexes with salicylic acid and a 12% quantum yield with a fluorescent lifetime of approximately 10 ms. Hence, copper (II) complexes with salicylic acid are excellent candidates for photoactive materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal that the divalent copper metal centers coordinate with the nitrogen and oxygen lone pairs of conjugate ligands. XPS binding energy trends for core electrons in lower-lying orbitals are similar for all three copper (II) complexes: nitrogen 1s and oxygen 1s binding energies increase relative to those for undiluted ligands, and copper 2p3/2 binding energies decrease relative to that for CuCl2. The thermal behavior of these copper complexes reveals that the thermal stability is characterized by the following pattern: Cu(1,10-phenanthroline)(salicylic acid) > Cu(1,10-phenanthroline)(2,2’-bipyridine) > Cu(1,10-phenanthroline)(1-benzylimidazole)2.

Abstract
Bipyridinium salts are currently very popular due to their perspective applications in redox flow batteries. Hence, we designed and prepared a series of bipyridiniums based on 2,2′-, 3,3′-, and 4,4′-bipyridine and 2,2′-bipyrimidine. The straightforward synthesis utilizes commercially or readily available starting compounds and their direct N-alkylation, mostly using 1,3-propanesultone. All eleven target derivatives with systematically evolved structure were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, which allowed elucidating thorough structure-property relationships. The electrochemical behavior depends primarily on the parent scaffold, type of N-alkylation, number of quaternized nitrogen atoms, planarity, counter ion as well as the used media. Two derivatives featuring quasi-reversible redox processes were further tested on rotating disc electrode and in a flow battery half-cell. 4,4′-Bipyridinium derivative bearing two sultone residues showed better performance and stability in the flow half-cell with small capacity decays of 0.09/0.15% per reduction-oxidation cycle, based on the number of the utilized redox processes (one/two).

Abstract
Oxide is an attractive linker for building polymetallic complexes that provide molecular models for metal oxide activity, but studies of these systems are limited to metals in high oxidation states. Herein, we synthesized and characterized the molecular and electronic structure of diuranium bridged UIII /UIV and UIII /UIII complexes. Reactivity studies of these complexes revealed that the U-O bond is easily broken upon addition of N-heterocycles resulting in the delivery of a formal equivalent of UIII and UII , respectively, along with the uranium(IV) terminal-oxo coproduct. In particular, the UIII /UIII oxide complex effects the reductive coupling of pyridine and two-electron reduction of 4,4'-bipyridine affording unique examples of diuranium(III) complexes bridged by N-heterocyclic redox-active ligands. These results provide insight into the chemistry of low oxidation state metal oxides and demonstrate the use of oxo-bridged UIII /UIII complexes as a strategy to explore UII reactivity.

Abstract
A new generation of confined palladium(II) catalysts covalently attached inside of porous organic polymers (POPs) has been attained. The synthetic approach employed was straightforward, and there was no prerequisite for making any modification of the precursor polymer. First, POP-based catalytic supports were obtained by reacting one symmetric trifunctional aromatic monomer (1,3,5-triphenylbenzene) with two ketones having electron-withdrawing groups (4,5-diazafluoren-9-one, DAFO, and isatin) in superacidic media. The homopolymers and copolymers were made using stoichiometric ratios between the functional groups, and they were obtained with quantitative yields after the optimization of reaction conditions. Moreover, the number of chelating groups (bipyridine moieties) available to bind Pd(II) ions to the catalyst supports was modified using different DAFO/isatin ratios. The resulting amorphous polymers and copolymers showed high thermal stability, above 500 °C, and moderate-high specific surface areas (from 760 to 935 m2 g-1), with high microporosity contribution (from 64 to 77%). Next, POP-supported Pd(II) catalysts were obtained by simple immersion of the catalyst supports in a palladium(II) acetate solution, observing that the metal content was similar to that theoretically expected according to the amount of bipyridine groups present. The catalytic activity of these heterogeneous catalysts was explored for the synthesis of biphenyl and terphenyl compounds, via the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction using a green solvent (ethanol/water), low palladium loads, and aerobic conditions. The findings showed excellent catalytic activity with quantitative product yields. Additionally, the recyclability of the catalysts, by simply washing it with ethanol, was excellent, with a sp2-sp2 coupling yield higher than 95% after five cycles of use. Finally, the feasibility of these catalysts to be employed in tangible organic reactions was assessed. Thus, the synthesis of a bulky compound, 4,4'-dimethoxy-5'-tert-butyl-m-terphenylene, which is a precursor of a thermal rearrangement monomer, was scaled-up to 2 g, with high conversion and 96% yield of the pure product.

Abstract
Carbonyl complexes with manganese(I) as the central metal are very attractive catalysts. The introduction of redox-active ligands, such as quinones and methyl viologen analogs into these catalysts, would be expected to lead to superior catalyst performances, since they can function as excellent electron carriers. In this study, we synthesized four tricarbonylmanganese(I) complexes containing typical bidentate polypyridyl ligands, including 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) frameworks bound to redox-active ortho-quinone/catechol or methyl viologen-like units. The molecular structures of the resulting complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography to clarify their steric features. As expected from the infrared (IR) data, three CO ligands for each complex were coordinated in the facial configuration around the central manganese(I) atom. Additionally, the structural parameters were found to differ significantly between the quinone/catechol units. Electrochemical analysis revealed some differences between them and their reference complexes, namely [MnBr(CO)3(phen)] and [MnBr(CO)3(bpy)]. Notably, interconversions induced by two-electron/two-proton transfers between the quinone and catechol units were observed in the phenanthroline-based complexes. This work indicated that the structural and redox properties in tricarbonylmanganese(I) complexes were significantly affected by chemically modified polypyridyl ligands. A better understanding of structures and redox behaviors of the present compounds would facilitate the design of new manganese complexes with enhanced properties.

Abstract
The controlled self-assembly of peptide- and protein-based pharmaceuticals is of central importance for their mode of action and tuning of their properties. Peptide YY3-36 (PYY3-36 ) is a 36-residue peptide hormone that reduces food intake when peripherally administered. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a PYY3-36 analogue functionalized with a metal-ion-binding 2,2'-bipyridine ligand that enables self-assembly through metal complexation. Upon addition of CuII , the bipyridine-modified PYY3-36 peptide binds stoichiometric quantities of metal ions in solution and contributes to the organization of higher-order assemblies. In this study, we aimed to explore the size effect of the self-assembly in vivo by using non-invasive quantitative single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) imaging. For this purpose, bipyridine-modified PYY3-36 was radiolabeled with a chelator holding 111 InIII , followed by the addition of CuII to the bipyridine ligand. SPECT/CT imaging and biodistribution studies showed fast renal clearance and accumulation in the kidney cortex. The radiolabeled bipyridyl-PYY3-36 conjugates with and without CuII presented a slightly slower excretion 1 h post injection compared to the unmodified-PYY3-36 , thus demonstrating that higher self-assemblies of the peptide might have an effect on the pharmacokinetics.

Abstract
The FeIII ion as a ubiquitous metal plays a key role in biochemical processes. Iron deficiency or excess in the human body can induce various diseases. Thus, effective detection of the FeIII ion has been deemed an issue of focus. To develop more crystalline chemical sensors for the selective detection of Fe3+, two novel two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers, namely, poly[[[μ-bis(pyridin-4-yl)amine-κ2N:N'](μ-naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylato-κ2O2:O6)zinc(II)] 0.5-hydrate], {[Zn(C12H6O4)(C10H9N3)]·0.5H2O}n, 1, and poly[(4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine-κ2N,N')(μ-naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylato-κ2O2:O6)hemi(μ-naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid-κ2O2:O6)copper(II)] [Cu(C12H6O4)(C12H12N2)(C12H8O4)0.5]n, 2, have been prepared using solvothermal methods. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that compound 1 is an undulating twofold interpenetrated 2D (4,4)-sql network and compound 2 is a twofold interpenetrated 2D honeycomb-type network with a (6,3)-hcb topology. The complex was characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and is a ladder-type CP which exhibits an obvious Ag-Ag interaction. The legs of the ladder are formed by parallel 4,4'-bipy ligands and silver ions, and the rungs are constructed by Ag-Ag interactions. A Hirshfeld surface analysis was carried out and is discussed in detail. The complex also displays favourable fluorescence properties.

Abstract
The title compounds, C21H13F2N3O (1) and C23H19N3O3 (2), have been synthesized by typical cross-coupling reactions. Both compounds have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Bipyridine 1 exhibits a fully extended structure in which the terminal pyridine rings are oriented away from each other, while bipyridine 2 displays a bent structure in which terminal pyridine rings are oriented in the same direction. Several intermolecular interactions lead to the formation of two- and three-dimensional supramolecular networks in the crystal structures of 1 and 2, respectively. Compound 1 bears fluorine substituents and emits a strong fluorescence with λmax = 325 nm, while methoxy-substituted compound 2 displays red-shifted emissions with λmax = 366 nm. The emissions observed in both compounds originate from phenyl- and 2,3'-bipyridine-based π-π* transitions, according to theoretical calculations. Both compounds have high triplet energies (T1) ranging from 2.64 to 2.65 eV, which makes them potential host materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Abstract
2,2'-Bipyridine is the most widely used chelating ligand for developing metal complexes in coordination and supramolecular chemistry. Here, we present a series of three bipyridine periodic mesoporous organosilicas (BPy-PMOs) grafted with lanthanide β-diketonate complex for the purpose of obtaining thermochromic materials, which can be employed as ratiometric temperature sensors. Such thermometers are based on the ratio of two emission intensity peaks and are not affected by factors such as alignment or optoelectronic drift of the excitation source and detectors. Three thermometric systems are studied: Dy-Dy, Tb-Sm, and Tb-Eu with the first two showing very attractive performance. For the first two systems, some of the best reported to date relative sensitivities are observed. In the BPy-PMO@Dy(acac)3 system, it is very unusual that the 4I15/2→ 6H15/2 transition is already occupied at low temperature such as 200 K, which influences its thermometric behavior. The Tb-Sm shows excellent performance in the physiological range and when suspended in water. We have additionally confirmed that the BPy-PMO hybrid materials lack toxicity to human cells, proving them very promising candidates for biomedical thermometric applications.

Abstract
One pathway for the preparation of enantiomerically pure compounds from prochiral substrates is the use of metal complex catalysis with chiral ligands. Compared to the other frequently used chiral ligands, chiral 2,2'-bipyridines have been underexploited, despite the data indicating that such ligands have considerable potential in synthetic chemistry. One of those is the so-called Bolm's ligand, a compound possessing chiral alcohol moieties in the side chains attached to the 2,2'-bipyridine scaffold. Various metal salts have been used in combination with Bolm's ligand as potent catalysts able to bring about enantioselective alkylations, allylations, conjugate additions, desymmetrization of meso-epoxides, aldol reactions, etc. This review aims to summarize Bolm's ligand applications in the area of enantioselective synthesis over the last three decades since its preparation.

Abstract
Light-emitting diode based electronic screens emit near-ultraviolet radiation, which causes harm to the human eye after prolonged exposure. Thus, it is of paramount importance to prepare a sensitive and adjustable visible near-ultraviolet sensor for retinal warning. Herein, a series of bipyridine derivatives were synthesized to investigate effects of substituent groups and anions on photochromic properties via both experimental and theoretical studies. The introduction of dual hydrogen bonding urea onto substituted groups significantly accelerated the photochromic rate due to strong intermolecular interactions, which reduces molecular spacing and promotes the electron-transfer effect. Moreover, the photochromic rate was tuned by changing the size of the anion. Larger anions widen the molecular spacing and weaken the electron transfer and eventually lead to a decrease in the photochromic rate. Finally, bipyridine derivatives were printed on a polyethylene terephthalate film or paper as a sensitive, adjustable, and visible sensor to monitor near-ultraviolet radiation emitted by an light-emitting diode screen.

Abstract
We have synthesized and examined several complexes of lanthanides with diamides of 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxylic acid bearing various hetaryl-based side chains for the elucidation of the effect of the heterocycle on the structure and properties of the ligands. The multigram scale methods for the preparation of various N-alkyl-hetaryls and their diamides were developed. The solid state structure of 6-methyl-2-pyridylamide of 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxylic acid possesses a flat structure where the conformation is completely different from that previously observed for N-alkylated 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxamides and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamides. The complexes of new ligands were synthesized and NMR and X-Ray studied their structure in solution and solid state. The results demonstrate that complexes possess the same structures both in solid state and in solution. Stability constants of the complexes were less when comparing with dimethyl-substituted diamides, but higher than for unsubstituted dianilide. Contrarily, the extraction ability of 2-pyridyl-diamide is significantly lower than for corresponding anilide. Specific interaction of extractant with solvent molecules, which is not available for electron-sink pyridine amides, can explain this. The luminescence of new Eu complexes was significantly higher than for all previously 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxamides and QY reaches 18%. Asymmetry ratios of Eu complexes were 25% higher when compared other complexes with 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxamides, which indicates large deviation from the inversion center.

Abstract
The reactivities of transition metal coordination compounds are often controlled by the environment around the coordination sphere. For ruthenium(II) complexes, differences in polypyridyl supporting ligands affect some types of reactivity despite identical coordination geometries. To evaluate the synergistic effects of (i) the supporting ligands, and (ii) the coordination geometry, a series of dicarbonyl-ruthenium(II) complexes that contain both asymmetric and symmetric bidentate polypyridyl ligands were synthesized. Molecular structures of the complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography to distinguish their steric configuration. Structural, computational, and electrochemical analysis revealed some differences between the isomers. Photo- and thermal reactions indicated that the reactivities of the complexes were significantly affected by both their structures and the ligands involved.

Abstract
Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological malignancy, often because of the frequent insurgence of chemoresistance to the drugs currently used. Thus, new therapeutical agents are needed. We tested the toxicity of 16 new DNA-intercalating agents to cisplatin (cDDP)-sensitive human ovarian carcinoma cell lines and their resistant counterparts. The compounds were the complexes of Pt(II) or Pd(II) with bipyridyl (bipy) and phenanthrolyl (phen) and with four different thiourea ancillary ligands. Within each of the four series of complexes characterized by the same thiourea ligand, the Pd(phen) drugs invariably showed the highest anti-proliferative efficacy. This paralleled both a higher intracellular drug accumulation and a more efficient DNA intercalation than all the other metal-bidentate ligand combinations. The consequent inhibition of topoisomerase II activity led to the greatest inhibition of DNA metabolism, evidenced by the inhibition of the expression of the folate cycle enzymes and a marked perturbation of cell-cycle distribution in both cell lines. These findings indicate that the particular interaction of Pd(II) with phenanthroline confers the best pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties that make this class of DNA intercalators remarkable inhibitors, even of the resistant cell growth.

Abstract
Polymer/inorganic thermoelectric composites have witnessed rapid progress in recent years, but most of the studies have focused on the traditional conducting polymers. The limited structures of traditional conducting polymers restrain the development of organic thermoelectric composites. Herein, we report the preparation and thermoelectric properties of a series of composites films based on SWCNTs and bipyridine-containing polyfluorene derivatives. The value of the power factor around 12 μW m-1 K-2 was achieved for the composite F8bpy/SWCNTs with a mass ratio of 50/50, and the maximum value of 62.3 μW m-1 K-2 was obtained when the mass ratio reached 10/90. Moreover, taking advantage of the bipyridine unit could chelate various kinds of metal ions to form polymer complexes. The enhanced power factor of 87.3 μW m-1 K-2 was obtained for composite F8bpy-Ni/SWCNTs with a mass ratio of 50/50. Finally, the thermoelectric properties of the bipyridine-containing polyfluorene derivative/SWCNT composites were conveniently tuned by chelating with different metal ions.

New bipyridine gold(III) dithiocarbamate-containing complexes exerted a potent anticancer activity against cisplatin-resistant cancer cells independent of p53 status. Oncotarget 2018; 8:490-505. Abstract
We synthesized, characterized and tested in a panel of cancer cell lines, nine new bipyridine gold(III) dithiocarbamate-containing complexes. In vitro studies demonstrated that compounds 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8 were the most cytotoxic in prostate, breast, ovarian cancer cell lines and in Hodgkin lymphoma cells with IC50 values lower than the reference drug cisplatin. The most active compound 1 was more active than cisplatin in ovarian (A2780cis and 2780CP-16) and breast cancer cisplatin-resistant cells. Compound 1 determined an alteration of the cellular redox homeostasis leading to increased ROS levels, a decrease in the mitochondrial membrane potential, cytochrome-c release from the mitochondria and activation of caspases 9 and 3. The ROS scavenger NAC suppressed ROS generation and rescued cells from damage. Compound 1 resulted more active in tumor cells than in normal human Mesenchymal stromal cells. Gold compounds were active independent of p53 status: exerted cytotoxic effects on a panel of non-small cell lung cancer cell lines with different p53 status and in the ovarian A2780 model where the p53 was knocked out. In conclusion, these promising results strongly indicate the need for further preclinical evaluation to test the clinical potential of these new gold(III) complexes.

Abstract
Here, 2,2'- and 3,3'-bipyridine are introduced for the first time as the core structure to get two new hole transport materials (HTMs), namely F22 and F33. The electron-withdrawing nature of bipyridine lowers the HOMO level of the new compounds and enhances the open-circuit voltage of perovskite solar cells. Especially for F33, the better planarity leads to better conjugation in the whole molecule and the molecular interaction is enhanced. Hole-mobility tests, steady-state photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as time-resolved PL decay results demonstrate that the new HTMs exhibit good hole extraction and hole-transporting property. Impressive power conversion efficiencies of 17.71 and 18.48 % are achieved in conventional planar perovskite (CH3 NH3 PbI3-x Clx ) solar cells containing F22 and F33 as HTMs, respectively. As far as we know, this is the first report on bypiridine-based HTMs with leading efficiencies, and the design motif in this work opens a new way for devising HTMs in the future.

Reversible Electrochemical Trapping of Carbon Dioxide Using 4,4'- Bipyridine That Does Not Require Thermal Activation. J Phys Chem Lett 2015; 6:4943-4946. Abstract
Sequestering carbon dioxide emissions by the trap and release of CO2 via thermally activated chemical reactions has proven problematic because of the energetic requirements of the release reactions. Here we demonstrate trap and release of carbon dioxide using electrochemical activation, where the reactions in both directions are exergonic and proceed rapidly with low activation barriers. One-electron reduction of 4,4'-bipyridine forms the radical anion, which undergoes rapid covalent bond formation with carbon dioxide to form an adduct. One-electron oxidation of this adduct releases the bipyridine and carbon dioxide. Reversible trap and release of carbon dioxide over multiple cycles is demonstrated in solution at room temperature, and without the requirement for thermal activation.

Abstract
Eight [Ir(bpy)Cp*Cl](+) -type complexes (bpy= bipyridine, Cp*=1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) containing differently substituted bipyridine ligands were synthesized and characterized. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) of the complexes in Ar-saturated acetonitrile solutions showed that the redox behavior of the complexes could be fine tuned by the electronic properties of the substituted bipyridine ligands. Further CV in CO2 -saturated MeCN/H2 O (9:1, v/v) solutions showed catalytic currents for CO2 reduction. In controlled potential electrolysis experiments (MeCN/MeOH (1:1, v/v), Eapp =-1.80 V vs Ag/AgCl), all of the complexes showed moderate activity in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 with good stability over at least 15 hours. This electrocatalytic process was selective toward formic acid, with only traces of dihydrogen or carbon monoxide and occasionally formaldehyde as byproducts. However, the turnover frequencies and current efficiencies were quite low. No direct correlation between the redox potentials of the complexes and their catalytic activity was observed.

Abstract
Two new 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) based ligands with ancillary BODIPY chromophores attached at the 4 and 4'-positions were prepared and characterized, which vary in the substitution pattern about the BODIPY periphery by either excluding (BB1) or including (BB2) a β-alkyl substituent. Both absorb strongly throughout the visible region and are strongly emissive. The basic photophysics and electrochemical properties of BB1 and BB2 are comparable to those of the BODIPY monomers on which they are based. The solid-state structures and electronic structure calculations both indicate that there is negligible electronic communication between the BODIPY moieties and the intervening bpy spacers. Electrogenerated chemiluminescence spectra of the two Bpy-BODIPY derivatives are similar to their recorded fluorescence profiles and are strongly influenced by substituents on the BODIPY chromophores. These 2,2'-bipyridine derivatives represent a new set of ligands that should find utility in applications including light-harvesting, photocatalysis, and molecular electronics.

Abstract
Peptide nucleic acid (PNA) is a synthetic analogue of DNA that commonly has an N-aminoethyl glycine backbone. The crystal structures of two PNA duplexes, one containing eight standard nucleobase pairs (GGCATGCC)(2), and the other containing the same nucleobase pairs and a central pair of bipyridine ligands, have been solved with a resolution of 1.22 and 1.10 Å, respectively. The non-modified PNA duplex adopts a P-type helical structure similar to that of previously characterized PNAs. The atomic-level resolution of the structures allowed us to observe for the first time specific modes of interaction between the terminal lysines of the PNA and the backbone and the nucleobases situated in the vicinity of the lysines, which are considered an important factor in the induction of a preferred handedness in PNA duplexes. Our results support the notion that whereas PNA typically adopts a P-type helical structure, its flexibility is relatively high. For example, the base-pair rise in the bipyridine-containing PNA is the largest measured to date in a PNA homoduplex. The two bipyridines bulge out of the duplex and are aligned parallel to the major groove of the PNA. In addition, two bipyridines from adjacent PNA duplexes form a π-stacked pair that relates the duplexes within the crystal. The bulging out of the bipyridines causes bending of the PNA duplex, which is in contrast to the structure previously reported for biphenyl-modified DNA duplexes in solution, where the biphenyls are π stacked with adjacent nucleobase pairs and adopt an intrahelical geometry. This difference shows that relatively small perturbations can significantly impact the relative position of nucleobase analogues in nucleic acid duplexes.

Abstract
We describe neurobiological applications of RuBi-Glutamate, a novel caged-glutamate compound based on ruthenium photochemistry. RuBi-Glutamate can be excited with visible wavelengths and releases glutamate after one- or two-photon excitation. It has high quantum efficiency and can be used at low concentrations, partly avoiding the blockade of GABAergic transmission present with other caged compounds. Two-photon uncaging of RuBi-Glutamate has a high spatial resolution and generates excitatory responses in individual dendritic spines with physiological kinetics. With laser beam multiplexing, two-photon RuBi-Glutamate uncaging can also be used to depolarize and fire pyramidal neurons with single-cell resolution. RuBi-Glutamate therefore enables the photoactivation of neuronal dendrites and circuits with visible or two-photon light sources, achieving single cell, or even single spine, precision.
