A New Imidazole Derivative for Corrosion Inhibition of Q235 Carbon Steel in an Acid Environment

Q235 carbon steel is a commonly used engineering material, but its application in marine environments is limited by its susceptibility to corrosion, especially localized corrosion that can lead to material perforation. Effective inhibitors are crucial to addressing this issue, particularly in acidic environments where localized areas become increasingly acidic. This study reports the synthesis of a new imidazole derivative corrosion inhibitor and evaluates its effectiveness in corrosion inhibition performance using potentiodynamic polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. High-resolution optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed for surface morphology analysis. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to explore the protection mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the self-synthesized imidazole derivative corrosion inhibitor offers an excellent corrosion protection performance for Q235 carbon steel in a 3.5 wt. % NaCl acidic solution. This inhibitor can provide a new strategy for carbon steel corrosion protection.

The Formation Mechanism of Nanocrystals after Martensitic Transformation

Understanding the ultrafine substructure in freshly formed Fe-C martensite is the key point to reveal the real martensitic transformation mechanism. As-quenched martensite, whose transformation temperature is close to room temperature, has been investigated in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in this study. The observation results revealed that the freshly formed martensite after quenching is actually composed of ultrafine crystallites with a grain size of 1−2 nm. The present observation result matches well with the suggestion based on X-ray studies carried out one hundred years ago. Such nanocrystals are distributed throughout the entire martensite. The whole martensite shows a uniform contrast under both bright and dark field observation modes, irrespective of what observation directions are chosen. No defect contrast can be observed inside each nanocrystal. However, a body-centered cubic {112}<111>-type twinning relationship exists among the ultrafine α-Fe grains. Such ultrafine α-Fe grains or crystallites are the root cause of the fine microstructure formed in martensitic steels and high hardness after martensitic transformation. The formation mechanism of the ultrafine α-Fe grains in the freshly formed martensite will be discussed based on a new γ → α phase transformation mechanism.

Effect of Carbon Content and Boronizing Parameters on Growth Kinetics of Boride Layers Obtained on Carbon Steels

Boronizing is a thermochemical treatment performed to produce hard and wear-resistant surface layers. In order to control the process and obtain boride layers with the desired properties, it is very important to know how the boronizing parameters and the chemical composition of the treated steel affect the boronizing. The aim of the present study is to investigate the influence of carbon content in carbon steels, boronizing temperature, and boronizing duration on the growth kinetics of boride layers. For this purpose, three carbon steels (C1y5, C45, and C70W2) were boronized in solid medium. The experimental results show that there is a linear relationship between the carbon content and the activation energy values, and between the carbon content and the frequency factors. In addition, a statistical analysis was performed to determine the contribution of each factor. The ANOVA showed that boronizing temperature has the highest effect on the boride layer thickness, followed by the boronizing duration, while the carbon content of the steel has the least effect on the boride layer thickness. Based on a regression model, an empirical equation was derived to estimate the thickness of the boride layer on carbon steels as a function of carbon content, boronizing temperature, and duration.

Hot Deformation Behavior of Non-Alloyed Carbon Steels

The hot deformation behavior of selected non-alloyed carbon steels was investigated by isothermal continuous uniaxial compression tests. Based on the analysis of experimentally determined flow stress curves, material constants suitable for predicting peak flow stress σ_p, peak strain ε_p and critical strain ε_crDRX necessary to induce dynamic recrystallization and the corresponding critical flow stresses σ_crDRX were determined. The validity of the predicted critical strains ε_crDRX was then experimentally verified. Fine dynamically recrystallized grains, which formed at the boundaries of the original austenitic grains, were detected in the microstructure of additionally deformed specimens from low-carbon investigated steels. Furthermore, equations describing with perfect accuracy a simple linear dependence of the critical strain ε_crDRX on peak strain ε_p were derived for all investigated steels. The determined hot deformation activation energy Q decreased with increasing carbon content (also with increasing carbon equivalent value) in all investigated steels. A logarithmic equation described this dependency with reasonable accuracy. Individual flow stress curves of the investigated steels were mathematically described using the Cingara and McQueen model, while the predicted flow stresses showed excellent accuracy, especially in the strains ranging from 0 to ε_p.
