Graphene-Based Tunable Dual-Frequency Terahertz Sensor

A tunable dual-band terahertz sensor based on graphene is proposed. The sensor consists of a metal bottom layer, a middle dielectric layer, and single-layer graphene patterned with four strips on the top. The numerical simulations results show that the proposed sensor exhibits two significant absorption peaks at 2.58 THz and 6.07 THz. The corresponding absorption rates are as high as nearly 100% and 98%, respectively. The corresponding quality factor (Q) value is 11.8 at 2.58 THz and 29.6 at 6.07 THz. By adjusting the external electric field or chemical doping of graphene, the positions of the dual-frequency resonance peak can be dynamically tuned. The excitation of plasma resonance in graphene can illustrate the mechanism of the sensor. To verify the practical application of the device, the terahertz response of different kinds and different thicknesses of the analyte is investigated and analyzed. A phenomenon of obvious frequency shifts of the two resonance peaks can be observed. Therefore, the proposed sensor has great potential applications in terahertz fields, such as material characterization, medical diagnosis, and environmental monitoring.

Bubble cloud characteristics and ablation efficiency in dual-frequency intrinsic threshold histotripsy

Histotripsy is a non-thermal focused ultrasound ablation method that destroys tissue through the generation and activity of acoustic cavitation bubble clouds. Intrinsic threshold histotripsy uses single-cycle pulses to generate bubble clouds when the dominant negative pressure phase exceeds an intrinsic threshold of ∼25-30 MPa. The ablation efficiency is dependent upon the size and density of bubbles within the bubble cloud. This work investigates the effects of dual-frequency pulsing schemes on the bubble cloud behavior and ablation efficiency in intrinsic threshold histotripsy. A modular 500 kHz:3 MHz histotripsy transducer treated agarose phantoms using dual-frequency histotripsy pulses with a 1:1 pressure ratio from 500 kHz and 3 MHz frequency elements and varying arrival times for the 3 MHz pulse relative to the arrival of the 500 kHz pulse (-100 ns, 0 ns, and +100 ns). High-speed optical imaging captured cavitation effects to characterize bubble cloud and individual bubble dynamics. The effects of dual-frequency pulsing on lesion formation and ablation efficiency were also investigated in red blood cell (RBC) phantoms. Results showed that the single bubble and bubble cloud size for dual-frequency cases were intermediate to published results for the component single-frequencies of 500 kHz and 3 MHz. Additionally, bubble cloud size and dynamics were shown to be altered by the arrival time of the 3 MHz pulse with respect to the 500 kHz pulse, with more uniform cloud expansion and collapse observed for early (-100 ns) arrival. Finally, RBC phantom experiments showed that dual-frequency exposures were capable of generating precise lesions with smaller areas and higher ablation efficiencies than previously published results for 500 kHz or 3 MHz. Overall, results demonstrate dual-frequency histotripsy's ability to modulate bubble cloud size and dynamics can be leveraged to produce precise lesions at higher ablation efficiencies than previously observed for single-frequency pulsing.

Safety and efficacy of intracavitary microwave ablation in hepatic gland tumours: Numerical and in vitro studies

The microwave ablation (MWA) of large hepatic gland tumour using multiple trocars operated at 2.45/6 GHz frequencies has been analysed. The ablation region (in vitro) obtained using parallel and non-parallel insertion of multiple trocars into the tissue has been analysed and compared with the numerical studies. The present study has considered a typical triangular-shaped hepatic gland model for experimental and numerical analysis. COMSOL Multiphysics software with inbuilt bioheat transfer, electromagnetic waves, heat transfer in solids and fluids and laminar flow physics has been used to obtain the numerical results. Experimental analysis has been conducted on egg white using a market-available microwave ablation device. It has been found from the present study that MWA operated at 2.45/6 GHz with the non-parallel position of multiple trocars into the tissue leads to a considerable increase in the ablation region as compared to the parallel insertion of trocars. Hence, non-parallel insertion of trocars is suitable to treat irregular-shaped large cancerous tumours (>3 cm). The non-parallel simultaneous insertion of trocars can overcome the healthy tissue ablation issue as well as the problem associated with indentation. Further, reasonable accuracy (with the difference being nearly ±0.1 cm in ablation diameter) has been achieved in comparing the ablation region and temperature variation between experimental and numerical studies. The present study may create a new path in the ablation of large size tumours (>3 cm) with multiple trocars of all shapes by sparing the healthy tissue.

Frequency set selection for multi-frequency steady-state visual evoked potential-based brain-computer interfaces

Objective

Multi-frequency steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) stimulation and decoding methods enable the representation of a large number of visual targets in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, unlike traditional single-frequency SSVEP, multi-frequency SSVEP is not yet widely used. One of the key reasons is that the redundancy in the input options requires an additional selection process to define an effective set of frequencies for the interface. This study investigates systematic frequency set selection methods.

Methods

An optimization strategy based on the analysis of the frequency components in the resulting multi-frequency SSVEP is proposed, investigated and compared to existing methods, which are constructed based on the analysis of the stimulation (input) signals. We hypothesized that minimizing the occurrence of common sums in the multi-frequency SSVEP improves the performance of the interface, and that selection by pairs further increases the accuracy compared to selection by frequencies. An experiment with 12 participants was conducted to validate the hypotheses.

Results

Our results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in decoding accuracy with the proposed optimization strategy based on multi-frequency SSVEP features compared to conventional techniques. Both hypotheses were validated by the experiments.

Conclusion

Performing selection by pairs and minimizing the number of common sums in selection by pairs are effective ways to select suitable frequency sets that improve multi-frequency SSVEP-based BCI accuracies.

Significance

This study provides guidance on frequency set selection in multi-frequency SSVEP. The proposed method in this study shows significant improvement in BCI performance (decoding accuracy) compared to existing methods in the literature.

Development of Dual-Frequency PMUT Arrays Based on Thin Ceramic PZT for Endoscopic Photoacoustic Imaging

This paper presents a dual-frequency piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (pMUT) array based on thin ceramic PZT for endoscopic photoacoustic imaging (PAI) applications. With a chip size of 7 × 7 mm², the pMUT array consists of 256 elements, half of which have a lower resonant frequency of 1.2 MHz and the other half have a higher resonant frequency of 3.4 MHz. Ceramic PZT, with outstanding piezoelectric coefficients, has been successfully thinned down to a thickness of only 4 μ by using wafer bonding and chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) techniques and employed as the piezoelectric layer of the pMUT elements. The diaphragm diameters of the lower-frequency and higher-frequency elements are 220 μm and 120 μm, respectively. The design methodology, multiphysics modeling, fabrication process, and characterization of the pMUTs are presented in detail. The fabricated pMUT array has been fully characterized via electrical, mechanical, and acoustic measurements. The measured maximum responsivities of the lower- and higher- frequency elements reach 110 nm/V and 30 nm/V at their respective resonances. The measured cross-couplings of the lower-frequency elements and higher-frequency elements are about 9% and 5%, respectively. Furthermore, PAI experiments with pencil leads embedded into an agar phantom have been conducted, which clearly shows the advantages of using dual-frequency pMUT arrays to provide comprehensive photoacoustic images with high spatial resolution and large signal-to-noise ratio simultaneously.

Implementation of a Novel 288-Element Dual-Frequency Array for Acoustic Angiography: In Vitro and In Vivo Characterization

Acoustic angiography is a superharmonic contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging method that produces high-resolution, 3-D maps of the microvasculature. Previous acoustic angiography studies have used twoelement, annular,mechanicallyactuated transducers(called "wobblers") to image microvasculature in preclinical tumor models with high contrast-to-tissue ratio and resolution, but these earlywobbler transducerscould not achieve the depth and sensitivity required for clinical acoustic angiography. In this work, we present a system for performing acoustic angiography with a novel dual-frequency(DF) transducer-a coaxially stacked DF array (DFA). We evaluate the DFA system bothin vitro andin vivo and demonstrate improvements in sensitivity and imaging depth up to 13.1 dB and 10 mm, respectively, compared with previous wobbler probes.

Highly sensitive lipid detection and localization in atherosclerotic plaque with a dual-frequency intravascular photoacoustic/ultrasound catheter

Intravascular photoacoustic/ultrasound (IVPA/US) is an emerging hybrid imaging modality that provides specific lipid detection and localization, while maintaining co-registered artery morphology, for diagnosis of vulnerable plaque in cardiovascular disease. However, current IVPA/US approaches based on a single-element transducer exhibit compromised performance for lipid detection due to the relatively low contrast of lipid absorption and conflicting detection bands for photoacoustic and ultrasound signals. Here, we present a dual-frequency IVPA/US catheter for highly sensitive detection and precision localization of lipids. The low frequency transducer provides enhanced photoacoustic sensitivity, while the high frequency transducer maintains state-of-the-art spatial resolution for ultrasound imaging. The boosted capability of IVPA/US imaging enables a multi-scale analysis of lipid distribution in swine with coronary atherosclerosis. The dual-frequency IVPA/US catheter has a diameter of 1 mm and flexibility to easily adapt to current catheterization procedures and is a significant step toward clinical diagnosis of vulnerable plaque.

An Indoor DFEC Ranging Method for Homologous Base Station Based on GPS L1 and BeiDou B1 Signals

High-precision navigation and positioning technology for indoor areas has become one of the research hotspots in the current navigation field. However, due to the complexity of the indoor environment, this technology direction is also one of the research difficulties. At present, our common indoor positioning methods are WIFI, Bluetooth, LED, ultrasound and pseudo satellite. However, due to the problem of inaccurate direct or indirect ranging, the positioning accuracy is usually affected, which makes the final application difficult to achieve. In order to avoid the ranging limitations of the existing methods, a new dual-frequency entanglement constraint (DFEC) ranging method based on homologous base station is proposed in this paper. The relationship between the homologous characteristics of dual-frequency signals and the phase relationship within the cycle is used to estimate the current carrier phase adjustment the true value of the cycle count is used to get rid of the constraints of the ranging conditions and improve the ranging accuracy. In order to verify the feasibility of this method, the wired environment test and the typical characteristic points of wireless environment are tested and analyzed respectively. The analysis results show that in the wired environment, the transmitting base station and the receiving terminal will introduce a ranging error of one wavelength; in the wireless environment, due to the influence of spatial noise and multipath, the error of the estimation of the whole cycles of the ranging value increases significantly. And this phenomenon is most obvious especially in the region where the signal is shaded, but the error estimate that satisfies ± 1 wavelength still accounts for 90%. Based on this, we conduct multiple observation data collection at five typical feature points, and used existing MATLAB positioning algorithms to conduct positioning error tests. The analysis found that under this error condition, the positioning accuracy was about 0.6 m, and 93% of the points met the 1-m positioning accuracy.

Early Assessment of Tumor Response to Radiation Therapy using High-Resolution Quantitative Microvascular Ultrasound Imaging

Measuring changes in tumor volume using anatomical imaging weeks to months post radiation therapy (RT) is currently the clinical standard for indicating treatment response to RT. For patients whose tumors do not respond successfully to treatment, this approach is suboptimal as timely modification of the treatment approach may lead to better clinical outcomes. We propose to use tumor microvasculature as a biomarker for early assessment of tumor response to RT. Acoustic angiography is a novel contrast ultrasound imaging technique that enables high-resolution microvascular imaging and has been shown to detect changes in microvascular structure due to cancer growth. Data suggest that acoustic angiography can detect longitudinal changes in the tumor microvascular environment that correlate with RT response.

Methods: Three cohorts of Fisher 344 rats were implanted with rat fibrosarcoma tumors and were treated with a single fraction of RT at three dose levels (15 Gy, 20 Gy, and 25 Gy) at a dose rate of 300 MU/min. A simple treatment condition was chosen for testing the feasibility of our imaging technique. All tumors were longitudinally imaged immediately prior to and after treatment and then every 3 days after treatment for a total of 30 days. Both acoustic angiography (using in-house produced microbubble contrast agents) and standard b-mode imaging was performed at each imaging time point using a pre-clinical Vevo770 scanner and a custom modified dual-frequency transducer.

Results: Results show that all treated tumors in each dose group initially responded to treatment between days 3-15 as indicated by decreased tumor growth accompanied with decreased vascular density. Untreated tumors continued to increase in both volume and vascular density until they reached the maximum allowable size of 2 cm in diameter. Tumors that displayed complete control (no tumor recurrence) continued to decrease in size and vascular density, while tumors that progressed after the initial response presented an increase in tumor volume and volumetric vascular density. The increase in tumor volumetric vascular density in recurring tumors can be detected 10.25 ± 1.5 days, 6 ± 0 days, and 4 ± 1.4 days earlier than the measurable increase in tumor volume in the 15, 20, and 25 Gy dose groups, respectively. A dose-dependent growth rate for tumor recurrence was also observed.

Conclusions: In this feasibility study we have demonstrated the ability of acoustic angiography to detect longitudinal changes in vascular density, which was shown to be a potential biomarker for tumor response to RT.

Contrast Enhanced Superharmonic Imaging for Acoustic Angiography Using Reduced Form-Factor Lateral Mode Transmitters for Intravascular and Intracavity Applications

Techniques to image the microvasculature may play an important role in imaging tumor-related angiogenesis and vasa vasorum associated with vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques. However, the microvasculature associated with these pathologies is difficult to detect using traditional B-mode ultrasound or even harmonic imaging due to small vessel size and poor differentiation from surrounding tissue. Acoustic angiography, a microvascular imaging technique that utilizes superharmonic imaging (detection of higher order harmonics of microbubble response), can yield a much higher contrast-to-tissue ratio than second harmonic imaging methods. In this paper, two dual-frequency transducers using lateral mode transmitters were developed for superharmonic detection and acoustic angiography imaging in intracavity applications. A single element dual-frequency intravascular ultrasound transducer was developed for concept validation, which achieved larger signal amplitude, better contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and pulselength compared to the previous work. A dual-frequency [Pb(Mg_1/3Nb_2/3)O₃]-x[PbTiO₃] array transducer was then developed for superharmonic imaging with dynamic focusing. The axial and lateral sizes of the microbubbles in a 200- [Formula: see text] tube were measured to be 269 and [Formula: see text], respectively. The maximum CNR was calculated to be 22 dB. These results show that superharmonic imaging with a low frequency lateral mode transmitter is a feasible alternative to thickness mode transmitters when the final transducer size requirements dictate design choices.

Design of Miniaturized Dual-Band Microstrip Antenna for WLAN Application

Wireless local area network (WLAN) is a technology that combines computer network with wireless communication technology. The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands in the Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) band can be used in the WLAN environment. Because of the development of wireless communication technology and the use of the frequency bands without the need for authorization, the application of WLAN is becoming more and more extensive. As the key part of the WLAN system, the antenna must also be adapted to the development of WLAN communication technology. This paper designs two new dual-frequency microstrip antennas with the use of electromagnetic simulation software—High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). The two antennas adopt ordinary FR4 material as a dielectric substrate, with the advantages of low cost and small size. The first antenna adopts microstrip line feeding, and the antenna radiation patch is composed of a folded T-shaped radiating dipole which reduces the antenna size, and two symmetrical rectangular patches located on both sides of the T-shaped radiating patch. The second antenna is a microstrip patch antenna fed by coaxial line, and the size of the antenna is diminished by opening a stepped groove on the two edges of the patch and a folded slot inside the patch. Simulation experiments prove that the two designed antennas have a higher gain and a favourable transmission characteristic in the working frequency range, which is in accordance with the requirements of WLAN communication.

Dual-focus therapeutic ultrasound transducer for production of broad tissue lesions

In noninvasive high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment, formation of a large tissue lesion per sonication is desirable for reducing the overall treatment time. The goal of this study is to show the feasibility of enlarging tissue lesion size with a dual-focus therapeutic ultrasound transducer (DFTUT) by increasing the depth-of-focus (DOF). The proposed transducer consists of a disc- and an annular-type element of different radii of curvatures to produce two focal zones. To increase focal depth and to maintain uniform beamwidth of the elongated DOF, each element transmits ultrasound of a different center frequency: the inner element at a higher frequency for near field focusing and the outer element at a lower frequency for far field focusing. By activating two elements at the same time with a single transmitter capable of generating a dual-frequency mixed signal, the overall DOF of the proposed transducer may be extended considerably. A prototype transducer composed of a 4.1 MHz inner element and a 2.7 MHz outer element was fabricated to obtain preliminary experimental results. The feasibility the proposed technique was demonstrated through sound field, temperature and thermal dose simulations. The performance of the prototype transducer was verified by hydrophone measurements and tissue ablation experiments on a beef liver specimen. When several factors affecting the length and the uniformity of elongated DOF of the DFTUT are optimized, the proposed therapeutic ultrasound transducer design may increase the size of ablated tissues in the axial direction and, thus, decreasing the treatment time for a large volume of malignant tissues especially deep-seated targets.
