Thresholds of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Input Substantially Alter Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Communities and Wheat Yield in Dryland Farmland

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are essential for preserving the multifunctionality of ecosystems. The nitrogen (N)/phosphorus (P) threshold that causes notable variations in the AM fungus community of the soil and plant productivity is still unclear. Herein, a long-term (18 years) field experiment with five N and five P fertilizer levels was conducted to investigate the change patterns of soil AM fungus, multifunctionality, and wheat yield. High-N and -P fertilizer inputs did not considerably increase the wheat yield. In the AM fungal network, a statistically significant positive correlation was observed between ecosystem multifunctionality and the biodiversity of two primary ecological clusters (N: Module #0 and P: Module #3). Furthermore, fertilizer input thresholds for N (92-160 kg ha-1) and P (78-100 kg ha-1) significantly altered the AM fungal community, soil characteristics, and plant productivity. Our study provided a basis for reduced N and P fertilizer application and sustainable agricultural development from the aspect of soil AM fungi.

Rare subcommunity maintains the stability of ecosystem multifunctionality by deterministic assembly processes in subtropical estuaries

Microorganisms, especially rare microbial species, are crucial in estuarine ecosystems for driving biogeochemical processes and preserving biodiversity. However, the understanding of the links between ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) and the diversity of rare bacterial taxa in estuary ecosystems remains limited. Employing high-throughput sequencing and a variety of statistical methods, we assessed the diversities and assembly process of abundant and rare bacterioplankton and their contributions to EMF in a subtropical estuary. Taxonomic analysis revealed Proteobacteria as the predominant phylum among both abundant and rare bacterial taxa. Notably, rare taxa demonstrated significantly higher taxonomic diversity and a larger species pool than abundant taxa. Additionally, our findings highlighted that deterministic assembly processes predominantly shape microbial communities, with heterogeneous selection exerting a stronger influence on rare taxa. Further analysis reveals that rare bacterial beta-diversity significantly impacts to EMF, whereas alpha diversity did not. The partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis demonstrated that the beta diversity of abundant and rare taxa, as the main biotic factor, directly affected EMF, while temperature and total organic carbon (TOC) were additional key factors to determine the relationship between beta diversity and EMF. These findings advance our understanding of the distribution features and ecological knowledge of the abundant and rare taxa in EMF in subtropical estuaries, and provide a reference for exploring the multifunctionality of different biospheres in aquatic environments.

Litter and soil biodiversity jointly drive ecosystem functions

The decomposition of litter and the supply of nutrients into and from the soil are two fundamental processes through which the above- and belowground world interact. Microbial biodiversity, and especially that of decomposers, plays a key role in these processes by helping litter decomposition. Yet the relative contribution of litter diversity and soil biodiversity in supporting multiple ecosystem services remains virtually unknown. Here we conducted a mesocosm experiment where leaf litter and soil biodiversity were manipulated to investigate their influence on plant productivity, litter decomposition, soil respiration, and enzymatic activity in the littersphere. We showed that both leaf litter diversity and soil microbial diversity (richness and community composition) independently contributed to explain multiple ecosystem functions. Fungal saprobes community composition was especially important for supporting ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF), plant production, litter decomposition, and activity of soil phosphatase when compared with bacteria or other fungal functional groups and litter species richness. Moreover, leaf litter diversity and soil microbial diversity exerted previously undescribed and significantly interactive effects on EMF and multiple individual ecosystem functions, such as litter decomposition and plant production. Together, our work provides experimental evidence supporting the independent and interactive roles of litter and belowground soil biodiversity to maintain ecosystem functions and multiple services.

Ecosystem multifunctionality, maximum height, and biodiversity of shrub communities affected by precipitation fluctuations in Northwest China

Introduction

Dryland ecosystems face serious threats from climate change. Establishing the spatial pattern of ecosystem multifunctionality, maximum height and the correlation of biodiversity patterns with climate change is important for understanding changes in complex ecosystem processes. However, the understanding of their relationships across large spatial areas remains limited in drylands.

Methods

Accordingly, this study examined the spatial patterns of ecosystem multifunctionality, maximum height and considered a set of potential environmental drivers by investigating natural shrub communities in Northwest China.

Results

We found that the ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) and maximum height of shrub communities were both affected by longitude, which was positively correlated with the precipitation gradient. Specifically, the EMF was driven by high precipitation seasonality, and the maximum height was driven by high precipitation stability during the growing season. Among the multiple biodiversity predictors, species beta diversity (SD-beta) is the most common in determining EMF, although this relationship is weak.

Discussion

Unlike tree life form, we did not observe biodiversity-maximum height relationships in shrub communities. Based on these results, we suggest that more attention should be paid to the climatical fluctuations mediated biodiversity mechanisms, which are tightly correlated with ecosystem's service capacity and resistance capacity under a rapid climate change scenario in the future.

Effects of plant diversity, soil microbial diversity, and network complexity on ecosystem multifunctionality in a tropical rainforest

Introduction

Plant diversity and soil microbial diversity are important driving factors in sustaining ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) in terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about the relative importance of plant diversity, soil microbial diversity, and soil microbial network complexity to EMF in tropical rainforests.

Methods

This study took the tropical rainforest in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China as the research object, and quantified various ecosystem functions such as soil organic carbon stock, soil nutrient cycling, biomass production, and water regulation in the tropical rainforest to explore the relationship and effect of plant diversity, soil microbial diversity, soil microbial network complexity and EMF.

Results

Our results exhibited that EMF decreased with increasing liana species richness, soil fungal diversity, and soil fungal network complexity, which followed a trend of initially increasing and then decreasing with soil bacterial diversity while increasing with soil bacterial network complexity. Soil microbial diversity and plant diversity primarily affected soil nutrient cycling. Additionally, liana species richness had a significant negative effect on soil organic carbon stocks. The random forest model suggested that liana species richness, soil bacterial network complexity, and soil fungal network complexity indicated more relative importance in sustaining EMF. The structural equation model revealed that soil bacterial network complexity and tree species richness displayed the significantly positive effects on EMF, while liana species richness significantly affected EMF via negative pathway. We also observed that soil microbial diversity indirectly affected EMF through soil microbial network complexity. Soil bulk density had a significant and negative effect on liana species richness, thus indirectly influencing EMF. Simultaneously, we further found that liana species richness was the main indicator of sustaining EMF in a tropical rainforest, while soil bacterial diversity was the primary driving factor.

Discussion

Our findings provide new insight into the relationship between biodiversity and EMF in a tropical rainforest ecosystem and the relative contribution of plant and soil microibal diversity to ecosystem function with increasing global climate change.

Impacts of human pressure and climate on biodiversity-multifunctionality relationships on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Many studies have investigated the effects of environmental context on biodiversity or multifunctionality in alpine regions, but it is uncertain how human pressure and climate may affect their relationships. Here, we combined the comparative map profile method with multivariate datasets to assess the spatial pattern of ecosystem multifunctionality and further identify the effects of human pressure and climate on the spatial distribution of biodiversity-multifunctionality relationships in alpine ecosystems of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). Our results indicate that at least 93% of the areas in the study region show a positive correlation between biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality across the QTP. Biodiversity-multifunctionality relationships with increasing human pressure show a decreasing trend in the forest, alpine meadow, and alpine steppe ecosystems, while an opposite pattern was found in the alpine desert steppe ecosystem. More importantly, aridity significantly strengthened the synergistic relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality in forest and alpine meadow ecosystems. Taken together, our results provide insights into the importance of protecting and maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality in response to climate change and human pressure in the alpine region.

Direct and indirect effects of dominant plants on ecosystem multifunctionality

Biodiversity is essential for the provision of multiple ecosystem functions simultaneously (ecosystem multifunctionality EMF). Yet, it remains unclear whether and how dominant plant species impact EMF. Here, we aimed at disentangling the direct from indirect above- and belowground pathways by which dominant plant species influence EMF. We evaluated the effects of two dominant plant species (Dasiphora fruticosa, and the toxic perennial plant Ligularia virgaurea) with expected positive and negative impacts on the abiotic environment (soil water content and pH), surrounding biological communities (plant and nematode richness, biomass, and abundance in the vicinity), and on the EMF of alpine meadows, respectively. We found that the two dominant plants enhanced EMF, with a positive effect of L. virgaurea on EMF greater than that of D. fruticosa. We also observed that dominant plants impacted on EMF through changes in soil water content and pH (indirect abiotic effects), but not through changes in biodiversity of surrounding plants and nematodes (indirect biotic pathway). Our study suggests that dominant plants may play an important role in promoting EMF, thus expanding the pervasive mass-ratio hypothesis originally framed for individual functions, and could mitigate the negative impacts of vegetation changes on EMF in the alpine meadows.

Perennial herb diversity contributes more than annual herb diversity to multifunctionality in dryland ecosystems of North-western China

BACKGROUND

Considerable attention has been given to how different aspects of biodiversity sustain ecosystem functions. Herbs are a critical component of the plant community of dryland ecosystems, but the importance of different life form groups of herbs is often overlooked in experiments on biodiversity-ecosystem multifunctionality. Hence, little is known about how the multiple attributes of diversity of different life form groups of herbs affect changes to the multifunctionality of ecosystems.

METHODS

We investigated geographic patterns of herb diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality along a precipitation gradient of 2100 km in Northwest China, and assessed the taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional attributes of different life form groups of herbs on the multifunctionality.

RESULTS

We found that subordinate (richness effect) species of annual herbs and dominant (mass ratio effect) species of perennial herbs were crucial for driving multifunctionality. Most importantly, the multiple attributes (taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional) of herb diversity enhanced the multifunctionality. The functional diversity of herbs provided greater explanatory power than did taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. In addition, the multiple attribute diversity of perennial herbs contributed more than annual herbs to multifunctionality.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings provide insights into previously neglected mechanisms by which the diversity of different life form groups of herbs affect ecosystem multifunctionality. These results provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between biodiversity and multifunctionality, and will ultimately contribute to multifunctional conservation and restoration programs in dryland ecosystems.

Variations in Soil Nitrogen Availability and Crop Yields under a Three-Year Annual Wheat and Maize Rotation in a Fluvo-Aquic Soil

Optimum tillage practices can create a suitable soil environment, and they improve the soil nutrient status to ensure crop development and yield. In this study, we evaluated the influences of six tillage practices on soil nutrients and maize yields from 2017 to 2019 in fluvo-aquic soil in the North China Plain. The field experiment was carried out by a split design with rotary tillage (RT) and deep tillage (DT) in wheat season in the main plot and no-tillage (NT), subsoiling between the row (SBR), and subsoiling in the row (SIR) in maize season in the subplot. The results showed that the soil nutrient content was higher under the treatments with rotary tillage in the wheat season in the 0-20 cm soil layer, while in the 20-40 cm soil layer, the soil nutrient content was higher under the treatments with deep tillage in the wheat season. The integrated principal component scores indicated that the soil nutrients had improved in the second year. The ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) index was higher with the treatments with rotary tillage in wheat season in the 0-20 cm soil layer, while it was the highest under DT-SIR at 20-40 cm. Correlation analysis showed that the soil EMF index correlated significantly (p < 0.05) with the soil nutrient content mainly in the 0-40 cm soil layer. The higher maize yield was under the treatments with deep tillage compared to that under the treatments with rotary tillage in the wheat season. The yield-increasing effect was higher under the treatments with subsoiling than those utilizing no-till in the maize season, with the highest average yield of 13,910 kg hm^-2 in the DT-SIR during the three years. Maize yield was strongly correlated with nutrients in the subsoil layer. The higher yield stability was found under RT-NT. To sum up, during the three-year experiment, rotary tillage in the wheat season combined with subsoiling in the maize season improved the soil nutrient content and the EMF index in the 0-20 cm layer, while the combination of deep tillage in the wheat season and subsoiling in the maize season improved those indices in the 20-40 cm soil layer, and increased the maize yield, the best one was under DT-SIR.

Multitrophic diversity and biotic associations influence subalpine forest ecosystem multifunctionality

Biodiversity across multiple trophic levels is required to maintain multiple ecosystem functions. Yet, it remains unclear how multitrophic diversity and species interactions regulate ecosystem multifunctionality. Here, combining data from nine different trophic groups (including trees, shrubs, herbs, leaf mites, small mammals, bacteria, pathogenic fungi, saprophytic fungi and symbiotic fungi) and 13 ecosystem functions related to supporting, provisioning and regulating services, we used a multitrophic perspective to evaluate the effects of elevation, diversity and network complexity on scale-dependent subalpine forest multifunctionality. Our results demonstrate that elevation and soil pH significantly modified species composition and richness across multitrophic groups and influenced multiple functions simultaneously. We provide evidence that species richness across multiple trophic groups had stronger effects on multifunctionality than species richness at any single trophic level. Moreover, biotic associations, indicating the complexity of trophic networks, were positively associated with multifunctionality. The relative effects of diversity on multifunctionality increased at the scale of the larger community compared to a scale accounting for neighbouring interactions. Our results highlight the paramount importance of scale- and context- dependent multitrophic diversity and interactions for a better understanding of mountain ecosystem multifunctionality in a changing world. [Relationship between functional diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality of alpine meadow along an altitude gradient in Gannan, China]

Relationship between plant community functional diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) was a new area of ecological research in recent years. Previous studies had mostly focused on the relationship between plant community functional diversity and individual ecosystem function, and lack of understanding of the EMF. In this study, six functional indices of aboveground biomass, soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen, soil total phosphorus, soil available nitrogen and soil available phosphorus of Gannan alpine meadow were selected to analyze the relationship between plant community functional diversity and EMF on the altitude gradient of Gannan alpine mea-dow by using Bartlett sphericity test and multi-threshold method. The results showed that there was significant altitudinal difference in plant community composition, with species richness and plant coverage at 3500 m were significantly higher than those at other altitudes. Single and multi-functional diversity decreased with the increases of altitude, with significant difference among altitudes. Redundancy analysis showed that single and multi-functional richness, functional evenness and Rao's quadratic entropy were significantly positively correlated with soil temperature, soil water content and soil bulk density, and significantly negatively correlated with soil pH and soil conductivity. In a large threshold range (6%-89%), functional diversity had a significant positive effect on EMF. Based on correlation analysis, optimal regression model and random forest model, it was found that multi-functional richness index had a significant positive relationship with EMF, and that multi-functional richness was also the main driving factor of EMF. Overall, functional richness had the most significant impact on the EMF of alpine meadow in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Ecosystem Coupling and Ecosystem Multifunctionality May Evaluate the Plant Succession Induced by Grazing in Alpine Meadow

Most alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau are at different stages of community succession induced by grazing practices. Quantifying the succession sequence and assessing the dynamics of plant composition, ecosystem coupling, and multifunctionality across successional stages are essential for reasonable restoration of degraded alpine meadow. Here, we selected areas with different grazing disturbance histories and used them as a space series (i.e., space-for-time substitution) to study the community succession. Our work quantified the plant succession sequence of alpine meadow induced by grazing with plant functional group approach. The plant succession sequence is from the tall sedge community with erect growth to the short undesirable toxic forbs community with prostrate growth. Ecosystem coupling, ecosystem multifunctionality and their relationships were all the lowest in Stage 4. Compared to Stage 4, the ecosystem multifunctionality index increased in Stages 1, 2, and 3 by 102.6, 89.8, and 207.6%, respectively; the extent of ecosystem coupling increased by 20.0, 16.8, and 21.2%, respectively. Our results indicated that the driving factors of ecosystem coupling and ecosystem multifunctionality were soil factor individual in early successional stage to plant-soil simultaneously in late successional stage. Our results also highlighted the importance of toxic weeds during the late stage of degraded succession and suggest that the expansion of toxic plants is a consequence of their greater suitability from a successional perspective. The findings of this study would provide valuable guidance for optimizing the management and restoration practice of alpine meadow.

Regime shifts in a shallow lake over 12 years: consequences for taxonomic and functional diversity, and ecosystem multifunctionality

Under increasing nutrient loading, shallow lakes may shift from a state of clear water dominated by submerged macrophytes to a turbid state dominated by phytoplankton or a shaded state dominated by floating macrophytes. How such regime shifts mediate the relationship between taxonomic and functional diversity and lake multifunctionality is poorly understood. We employed a detailed database describing a shallow lake over a 12-year period during which the lake has displayed all the three states (clear, turbid, and shaded) to investigate how species richness, functional diversity of fish and zooplankton, ecosystem multifunctionality, and five individual ecosystem functions (nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, standing fish biomass, algae production, and light availability) differ among states. We also evaluated how the relationship between biodiversity (species richness and functional diversity) and multifunctionality is affected by regime shifts. We showed that species richness and the functional diversity of fish and zooplankton were highest during the clear state. The clear state also maintained the highest values of multifunctionality as well as standing fish biomass production, algae biomass, and light availability, whereas the turbid and shaded states had higher nutrient concentrations. Functional diversity was the best predictor of multifunctionality. The relationship between functional diversity and multifunctionality was strongly positive during the clear state, but such relationship became flatter after the shift to the turbid or shaded state. Our findings illustrate that focusing on functional traits may provide a more mechanistic understanding of how regime shifts affect biodiversity and the consequences for ecosystem functioning. Regime shifts towards a turbid or shaded state negatively affect the taxonomic and functional diversity of fish and zooplankton, which in turn impairs the multifunctionality of shallow lakes.

Litter-Induced Reduction in Ecosystem Multifunctionality Is Mediated by Plant Diversity and Cover in an Alpine Meadow

Litter has been shown to alter the structure and functions of grassland ecosystems, and a knowledge of the effects of litter is essential for understanding the dynamics of ecosystem multifunctionality. However, relatively little is known about the effects of plant litter on ecosystem multifunctionality in alpine meadows. A three-year field experiment was conducted to explore how litter manipulation affects ecosystem multifunctionality. The plant litter treatments that were applied consisted of a range of litter mass levels and three dominant plant species, in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The results showed that litter mass manipulation had a negative effect on ecosystem multifunctionality and most individual ecosystem functions (species richness, plant cover, and above-ground biomass) but had a positive effect on plant functional group evenness. In particular, the study found that low or medium amounts of litter (≤200gm-2) were beneficial in maintaining a high level of ecosystem multifunctionality. Furthermore, a structural equation model revealed that ecosystem multifunctionality was driven by indirect effects of litter mass manipulation on plant functional group evenness, plant cover, and species richness. These results suggest that litter-induced effects may be a major factor in determining grassland ecosystem multifunctionality, and they indicate the potential importance of grassland management strategies that regulate the dynamics of litter accumulation.

Distinct Responses of Rare and Abundant Microbial Taxa to In Situ Chemical Stabilization of Cadmium-Contaminated Soil

Soil microorganisms, which intricately link to ecosystem functions, are pivotal for the ecological restoration of heavy metal-contaminated soil. Despite the importance of rare and abundant microbial taxa in maintaining soil ecological function, the taxonomic and functional changes in rare and abundant communities during in situ chemical stabilization of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil and their contributions to the restoration of ecosystem functions remain elusive. Here, a 3-year field experiment was conducted to assess the effects of five soil amendments (CaCO₃ as well as biochar and rice straw, individually or in combination with CaCO₃) on rare and abundant microbial communities. The rare bacterial community exhibited a narrower niche breadth to soil pH and Cd speciation than the abundant community and was more sensitive to environmental changes altered by different soil amendments. However, soil amendments had comparable impacts on rare and abundant fungal communities. The assemblies of rare and abundant bacterial communities were dominated by variable selection and stochastic processes (dispersal limitation and undominated processes), respectively, while assemblies of both rare and abundant fungal communities were governed by dispersal limitation. Changes in soil pH, Cd speciation, and soil organic matter (SOM) by soil amendments may play essential roles in community assembly of rare bacterial taxa. Furthermore, the restored ecosystem multifunctionality by different amendments was closely related to the recovery of specific keystone species, especially rare bacterial taxa (Gemmatimonadaceae and Haliangiaceae) and rare fungal taxa (Ascomycota). Together, our results highlight the distinct responses of rare and abundant microbial taxa to soil amendments and their linkage with ecosystem multifunctionality.

IMPORTANCE Understanding the ecological roles of rare and abundant species in the restoration of soil ecosystem functions is crucial to remediation of heavy metal-polluted soil. Our study assessed the efficiencies of five commonly used soil amendments on recovery of ecosystem multifunctionality and emphasized the relative contributions of rare and abundant microbial communities to ecosystem multifunctionality. We found great discrepancies in community composition, assembly, niche breadth, and environmental responses between rare and abundant communities during in situ chemical stabilization of Cd-contaminated soil. Application of different soil amendments triggered recovery of specific key microbial species, which were highly related to ecosystem multifunctionality. Together, our results highlighted the importance of rare bacterial as well as rare and abundant fungal communities underpinning restoration of soil ecosystem multifunctionality during the Cd stabilization process.

Plants and Microbes Mediate the Shift in Ecosystem Multifunctionality From Low to High Patterns Across Alpine Grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau

Both plant communities and soil microbes have been reported to be correlated with ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the process and mechanism of aboveground and belowground communities on different EMF patterns are not clear. In order to explore different response patterns and mechanisms of EMF, we divided EMF into low (<0) and high patterns (>0). We found that there were contrasting patterns of low and high EMF in the alpine grassland ecosystem on the Tibetan Plateau. Specifically, compared with low EMF, environmental factors showed higher sensitivity to high EMF. Soil properties are critical factors that mediate the impact of community functions on low EMF based on the change of partial correlation coefficients from 0 to 0.24. In addition, plant community functions and microbial biomass may mediate the shift of EMF from low to high patterns through the driving role of climate across the alpine grassland ecosystem. Our findings will be vital to clarify the mechanism for the stability properties of grassland communities and ecosystems under ongoing and future climate change.

Beyond the single index: Investigating ecological mechanisms underpinning ecosystem multifunctionality with network analysis

Ecosystems simultaneously deliver multiple functions that relate to both the activities of resident species and environmental conditions. One of the biggest challenges in multifunctionality assessment is balancing analytical simplicity with ecosystem complexity. As an alternative to index-based approaches, we introduce a multivariate network analysis that uses network theory to assess multifunctionality in terms of the relationships between species' functional traits, environmental characteristics, and functions. We tested our approach in a complex and heterogeneous ecosystem, marine intertidal sandflats. We considered eight ecosystem function, five macrofaunal functional trait groups derived from 36 species, and four environmental characteristics. The indicators of ecosystem functions included the standing stock of primary producers, oxygen production, benthic oxygen consumption, DIN (ammonium and NOx efflux) and phosphate release from the sediments, denitrification, and organic matter degradation at the sediment surface. Trait clusters included functional groups of species that shared combinations of biological traits that affect ecosystem function: small mobile top 2 cm dwellers, suspension feeders, deep-dwelling worms, hard-bodied surface dwellers, and tube-forming worms. Environmental characteristics included sediment organic matter, %mud, %shell hash, and %sediment water content. Our results visualize and quantify how multiple ecosystem elements are connected and contribute to the provision of functions. Small mobile top 2 cm dwellers (among trait clusters) and %mud (among environmental characteristics) were the best predictor for multiple functions. Detailed knowledge of multifunctionality relationships can significantly increase our understanding of the real-world complexity of natural ecosystems. Multivariate network analysis, as a standalone method or applied alongside already existing single index multifunctionality methods, provides means to advance our understanding of how environmental change and biodiversity loss can influence ecosystem performance across multiple dimensions of functionality. Embedding such a detailed yet holistic multifunctionality assessment in environmental decision-making will support the assessment of multiple ecosystem services and social-ecological values.

Functional redundancy and specific taxa modulate the contribution of prokaryotic diversity and composition to multifunctionality

Observational and experimental evidence has revealed the functional importance of microbial diversity. However, the effects of microbial diversity loss on ecosystem functions are not consistent across studies, which are probably tempered by microbial functional redundancy, specific taxa and functions evaluated. Here we conducted diversity manipulation experiments in two independent soils with distinct prokaryotic communities, and investigated how the initial community traits (e.g., distinct functional redundancy and taxonomic composition) modulate the contribution of prokaryotic diversity loss and composition shift to eight ecosystem functions related to soil nutrient cycling. We found that diversity loss impaired three functions (potential nitrification rate, N₂ -fixation activity and phosphatase) and multifunctionality only in the communities with low functional redundancy, but all examined functions were unaffected in the communities with high functional redundancy. All significantly affected functions belonged to specialized functions, while the broad function (soil basal respiration) was unaffected. Moreover, prokaryotic composition explained more functional variation than diversity, which was ascribed to the crucial role of specific taxa that influence particular functions. Taken together, this study provides empirical evidence for identifying the mechanism underlying the ecosystem response to changes in microbial community, with implications for improving the prediction of ecosystem process models and managing microbial communities to promote ecosystem services.

Global negative effects of nutrient enrichment on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, plant diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality

Despite widespread anthropogenic nutrient enrichment, it remains unclear how nutrient enrichment influences plant-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) symbiosis and ecosystem multifunctionality at the global scale. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis to examine the worldwide effects of nutrient enrichment on AMF and plant diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality using data of field experiments from 136 papers. Our analyses showed that nutrient addition simultaneously decreased AMF diversity and abundance belowground and plant diversity aboveground at the global scale. The decreases in AMF diversity and abundance associated with nutrient addition were more pronounced with increasing experimental duration, mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP). Nutrient addition-induced changes in soil pH and available phosphorus (P) predominantly regulated the responses of AMF diversity and abundance. Furthermore, AMF diversity correlated with ecosystem multifunctionality under nutrient addition worldwide. Our findings identify the negative effects of nutrient enrichment on AMF and plant diversity and suggest that AMF diversity is closely linked with ecosystem function. This study offers an important advancement in our understanding of plant-AMF interactions and their likely responses to ongoing global change.

Precipitation Alters the Effects of Temperature on the Ecosystem Multifunctionality in Alpine Meadows

Precipitation and temperature are major controls on multiple ecosystem functions in alpine grasslands. There is scant evidence for the interactive effects of temperature and precipitation changes on the ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) in alpine meadows. To explore the interactive effects of temperature and precipitation changes on the EMF in alpine meadows, we transplanted meadow blocks reciprocally among three altitudes (4,650, 4,950, and 5,200 m) on the central Tibetan Plateau. Compared with the home sites (control), the EMF has a trend to increase when meadow blocks were downward transplanted (experimental warming) to the high-precipitation sites but decrease as meadow blocks were downward transplanted to the low-precipitation sites. However, the experimental cooling (upward transplantation) consistently reduced the EMF regardless of the precipitation change. The increase of EMF under the experimental warming was closely related to the variation of both plant and soil functions, whereas the reduction of EMF under the cooling was highly correlated with the decrease of plant function. Our results highlight that climate warming effects on the EMF are greatly associated with precipitation changes in the semi-arid alpine ecosystems.

Positive correlations in species functional contributions drive the response of multifunctionality to biodiversity loss

Changes in biodiversity can severely affect ecosystem functioning, but the impacts of species loss on an ecosystem's ability to sustain multiple functions remain unclear. When considering individual functions, the impacts of biodiversity loss depend on correlations between species functional contributions and their extinction probabilities. When considering multiple functions, the impacts of biodiversity loss depend on correlations between species contributions to individual functions. However, how correlations between extinction probabilities and functional contributions determine the impact of biodiversity loss on multifunctionality (MF) is not well understood. Here, we use biodiversity loss simulations to examine the influence of correlations among multiple functions and extinction probabilities on the diversity-MF relationship. In contrast with random extinction, we find that the response of MF to biodiversity loss is influenced by the absence of positive correlations between species functional contributions, rather than by negative correlations. Communities with a high number of pairwise positive correlations in functional contributions achieve higher levels of MF, but are also less resilient to extinction. This work implies that understanding how species extinction probabilities correlate with their contribution to MF can help identify the degree to which MF will change with ongoing biodiversity loss and target conservation efforts to maximize MF resiliency.

Linking changes in species-trait relationships and ecosystem function using a network analysis of traits

A major challenge in ecology and environmental management is linking changes in community composition to ecosystem functions. We developed the network analysis of traits (NAT) to show changes in community network structure based on the changes in the composition and connectivity between clusters of species that share traits that imply shifts in functional diversity. We tested the application of NAT on a 113 species found on an intertidal sandflat that was subject to experimental nitrogen addition (control [0 g N/m² ], medium [150 g N/m² ], and high [600 g N/m² ]). This allowed us to directly link mechanistic changes in community composition and function with the trait-space network patterns revealed by NAT. We demonstrate that under medium (150 g N/m² ) N treatment, functional diversity remained consistent, whereas increasing disturbance to high (600 g N/m² ) N treatment affected the species-trait network structure and caused merging of functional clusters implying a loss of functional trait diversity.

Land-use change affects size spectra, energy flux and ecosystem functions in litter and soil invertebrates

(2019) advance our understanding of the various levels of the consequences of human impact on ecosystems. They examine the communities of litter and soil invertebrates in four different forests (from rainforest to oil palm plantations). Data on abundance, body masses and trophic guild in litter and soil invertebrates are expanded to a study towards biodiversity, biomass, energy flux and ecosystem functions. Their results show that size spectra are affected differently for decomposers, herbivores, omnivores and predators. Most of these groups decrease in abundance with increasing land use, and only large decomposers increase strongly. Moreover, creating trophic-group food webs for litter and soil invertebrates of each forest demonstrates the changes in energy flux and ecosystem functions. With their study, Potapov et al. (2019) present new insights into ecosystem functions and the sensitivity of communities to changes in land use.

Diversifying livestock promotes multidiversity and multifunctionality in managed grasslands

The potential importance of herbivore diversity in maintaining ecosystem functioning remains unclear in terrestrial ecosystems. This is a critical knowledge gap because the global human population increasingly relies on grasslands to supply meat and dairy products. As the global human population continues to grow, and as per capita consumption of meat and dairy products continues to increase, livestock grazing will place unprecedented pressures on grasslands worldwide. We show that diversifying livestock could promote grassland biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality in an increasingly managed world, and also provide insights into the importance of multitrophic diversity to maintain ecosystem multifunctionality in managed ecosystems. Grassland grazing management by livestock diversification increases nature’s benefits to people, partly by maintaining a diverse array of grassland species.

Increasing plant diversity can increase ecosystem functioning, stability, and services in both natural and managed grasslands, but the effects of herbivore diversity, and especially of livestock diversity, remain underexplored. Given that managed grazing is the most extensive land use worldwide, and that land managers can readily change livestock diversity, we experimentally tested how livestock diversification (sheep, cattle, or both) influenced multidiversity (the diversity of plants, insects, soil microbes, and nematodes) and ecosystem multifunctionality (including plant biomass production, plant leaf N and P, above-ground insect abundance, nutrient cycling, soil C stocks, water regulation, and plant–microbe symbiosis) in the world’s largest remaining grassland. We also considered the potential dependence of ecosystem multifunctionality on multidiversity. We found that livestock diversification substantially increased ecosystem multifunctionality by increasing multidiversity. The link between multidiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality was always stronger than the link between single diversity components and functions. Our work provides insights into the importance of multitrophic diversity to maintain multifunctionality in managed ecosystems and suggests that diversifying livestock could promote both multidiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality in an increasingly managed world.

A niche for ecosystem multifunctionality in global change research

Concern about human modification of Earth's ecosystems has recently motivated ecologists to address how global change drivers will impact the simultaneous provisioning of multiple functions, termed ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF). However, metrics of EMF have often been applied in global change studies with little consideration of the information they provide beyond single functions, or how and why EMF may respond to global change drivers. Here, we critically review the current state of this rapidly expanding field and provide a conceptual framework to guide the effective incorporation of EMF in global change research. In particular, we emphasize the need for a priori identification and explicit testing of the biotic and abiotic mechanisms through which global change drivers impact EMF, as well as assessing correlations among multiple single functions because these patterns underlie shifts in EMF. While the role of biodiversity in mediating global change effects on EMF has justifiably received much attention, empirical support for effects via other biotic and physicochemical mechanisms are also needed. Studies also frequently stated the importance of measuring EMF responses to global change drivers to understand the potential consequences for multiple ecosystem services, but explicit links between measured functions and ecosystem services were missing from many such studies. While there is clear potential for EMF to provide novel insights to global change research, predictive understanding will be greatly improved by insuring future research is strongly hypothesis-driven, is designed to explicitly test multiple abiotic and biotic mechanisms, and assesses how single functions and their covariation drive emergent EMF responses to global change drivers.

Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in naturally assembled communities

Approximately 25 years ago, ecologists became increasingly interested in the question of whether ongoing biodiversity loss matters for the functioning of ecosystems. As such, a new ecological subfield on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning (BEF) was born. This subfield was initially dominated by theoretical studies and by experiments in which biodiversity was manipulated, and responses of ecosystem functions such as biomass production, decomposition rates, carbon sequestration, trophic interactions and pollination were assessed. More recently, an increasing number of studies have investigated BEF relationships in non-manipulated ecosystems, but reviews synthesizing our knowledge on the importance of real-world biodiversity are still largely missing. I performed a systematic review in order to assess how biodiversity drives ecosystem functioning in both terrestrial and aquatic, naturally assembled communities, and on how important biodiversity is compared to other factors, including other aspects of community composition and abiotic conditions. The outcomes of 258 published studies, which reported 726 BEF relationships, revealed that in many cases, biodiversity promotes average biomass production and its temporal stability, and pollination success. For decomposition rates and ecosystem multifunctionality, positive effects of biodiversity outnumbered negative effects, but neutral relationships were even more common. Similarly, negative effects of prey biodiversity on pathogen and herbivore damage outnumbered positive effects, but were less common than neutral relationships. Finally, there was no evidence that biodiversity is related to soil carbon storage. Most BEF studies focused on the effects of taxonomic diversity, however, metrics of functional diversity were generally stronger predictors of ecosystem functioning. Furthermore, in most studies, abiotic factors and functional composition (e.g. the presence of a certain functional group) were stronger drivers of ecosystem functioning than biodiversity per se. While experiments suggest that positive biodiversity effects become stronger at larger spatial scales, in naturally assembled communities this idea is too poorly studied to draw general conclusions. In summary, a high biodiversity in naturally assembled communities positively drives various ecosystem functions. At the same time, the strength and direction of these effects vary highly among studies, and factors other than biodiversity can be even more important in driving ecosystem functioning. Thus, to promote those ecosystem functions that underpin human well-being, conservation should not only promote biodiversity per se, but also the abiotic conditions favouring species with suitable trait combinations.

Plant diversity maintains multiple soil functions in future environments

Biodiversity increases ecosystem functions underpinning a suite of services valued by society, including services provided by soils. To test whether, and how, future environments alter the relationship between biodiversity and multiple ecosystem functions, we measured grassland plant diversity effects on single soil functions and ecosystem multifunctionality, and compared relationships in four environments: ambient conditions, elevated atmospheric CO₂, enriched N supply, and elevated CO₂ and N in combination. Our results showed that plant diversity increased three out of four soil functions and, consequently, ecosystem multifunctionality. Remarkably, biodiversity-ecosystem function relationships were similarly significant under current and future environmental conditions, yet weaker with enriched N supply. Structural equation models revealed that plant diversity enhanced ecosystem multifunctionality by increasing plant community functional diversity, and the even provision of multiple functions. Conserving local plant diversity is therefore a robust strategy to maintain multiple valuable ecosystem services in both present and future environmental conditions.

A multivariate test of disease risk reveals conditions leading to disease amplification

Theory predicts that increasing biodiversity will dilute the risk of infectious diseases under certain conditions and will amplify disease risk under others. Yet, few empirical studies demonstrate amplification. This contrast may occur because few studies have considered the multivariate nature of disease risk, which includes richness and abundance of parasites with different transmission modes. By combining a multivariate statistical model developed for biodiversity-ecosystem-multifunctionality with an extensive field manipulation of host (plant) richness, composition and resource supply to hosts, we reveal that (i) host richness alone could not explain most changes in disease risk, and (ii) shifting host composition allowed disease amplification, depending on parasite transmission mode. Specifically, as predicted from theory, the effect of host diversity on parasite abundance differed for microbes (more density-dependent transmission) and insects (more frequency-dependent transmission). Host diversity did not influence microbial parasite abundance, but nearly doubled insect parasite abundance, and this amplification effect was attributable to variation in host composition. Parasite richness was reduced by resource addition, but only in species-rich host communities. Overall, this study demonstrates that multiple drivers, related to both host community and parasite characteristics, can influence disease risk. Furthermore, it provides a framework for evaluating multivariate disease risk in other systems.

Energy Flux: The Link between Multitrophic Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning

Relating biodiversity to ecosystem functioning in natural communities has become a paramount challenge as links between trophic complexity and multiple ecosystem functions become increasingly apparent. Yet, there is still no generalised approach to address such complexity in biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) studies. Energy flux dynamics in ecological networks provide the theoretical underpinning of multitrophic BEF relationships. Accordingly, we propose the quantification of energy fluxes in food webs as a powerful, universal tool for understanding ecosystem functioning in multitrophic systems spanning different ecological scales. Although the concept of energy flux in food webs is not novel, its application to BEF research remains virtually untapped, providing a framework to foster new discoveries into the determinants of ecosystem functioning in complex systems.

Template for using biological trait groupings when exploring large-scale variation in seafloor multifunctionality

Understanding large-scale spatial variation in ecosystem properties and associated functionality is key for successful conservation of ecosystems. This study provides a template for how to estimate differences in ecosystem functionality over large spatial scales by using groupings of biological traits. We focus on trait groupings that describe three important benthic ecosystem properties, namely bioturbation, community stability, and juvenile dispersal. Recognizing that groups of traits interact and are constrained within an organism, we statistically define important functional trait subgroups that describe each ecosystem property. The sub-groups are scored according to their weighted ecological impact to gain an overall estimation of the cumulative expression of each ecosystem property at individual sites. Furthermore, by assigning each property a value relative to its observed maximum, and by summing up the individual property values, we offer an estimate of benthic ecosystem multifunctionality. Based on a spatially extensive benthic data set, we were able to identify coastal areas with high and low potential for the considered benthic ecosystem properties and the measure of ecosystem multifunctionality. Importantly, we show that a large part of the spatial variation in functional trait sub-groups and in benthic ecosystem multifunctionality was explained by environmental change. Our results indicate that through this simplification it is possible to estimate the functionality of the seafloor. Such information is vital in marine spatial planning efforts striving to balance the utilization with the preservation of natural resources.

Continental mapping of forest ecosystem functions reveals a high but unrealised potential for forest multifunctionality

Humans require multiple services from ecosystems, but it is largely unknown whether trade-offs between ecosystem functions prevent the realisation of high ecosystem multifunctionality across spatial scales. Here, we combined a comprehensive dataset (28 ecosystem functions measured on 209 forest plots) with a forest inventory dataset (105,316 plots) to extrapolate and map relationships between various ecosystem multifunctionality measures across Europe. These multifunctionality measures reflected different management objectives, related to timber production, climate regulation and biodiversity conservation/recreation. We found that trade-offs among them were rare across Europe, at both local and continental scales. This suggests a high potential for 'win-win' forest management strategies, where overall multifunctionality is maximised. However, across sites, multifunctionality was on average 45.8-49.8% below maximum levels and not necessarily highest in protected areas. Therefore, using one of the most comprehensive assessments so far, our study suggests a high but largely unrealised potential for management to promote multifunctional forests.
