From Brownian to Deterministic Motor Movement in a DNA-Based Molecular Rotor

Molecular devices that have an anisotropic periodic potential landscape can be operated as Brownian motors. When the potential landscape is cyclically switched with an external force, such devices can harness random Brownian fluctuations to generate a directed motion. Recently, directed Brownian motor-like rotatory movement was demonstrated with an electrically switched DNA origami rotor with designed ratchet-like obstacles. Here, we demonstrate that the intrinsic anisotropy of DNA origami rotors is also sufficient to result in motor movement. We show that for low amplitudes of an external switching field, such devices operate as Brownian motors, while at higher amplitudes, they behave deterministically as overdamped electrical motors. We characterize the amplitude and frequency dependence of the movements, showing that after an initial steep rise, the angular speed peaks and drops for excessive driving amplitudes and frequencies. The rotor movement can be well described by a simple stochastic model of the system.

Electroplasticization of Liquid Crystal Polymer Networks

Shape-shifting liquid crystal networks (LCNs) can transform their morphology and properties in response to external stimuli. These active and adaptive polymer materials can have impact in a diversity of fields, including haptic displays, energy harvesting, biomedicine, and soft robotics. Electrically driven transformations in LCN coatings are particularly promising for application in electronic devices, in which electrodes are easily integrated and allow for patterning of the functional response. The morphing of these coatings, which are glassy in the absence of an electric field, relies on a complex interplay between polymer viscoelasticity, liquid crystal order, and electric field properties. Morphological transformations require the material to undergo a glass transition that plasticizes the polymer sufficiently to enable volumetric and shape changes. Understanding how an alternating current can plasticize very stiff, densely cross-linked networks remains an unresolved challenge. Here, we use a nanoscale strain detection method to elucidate this electric-field-induced devitrification of LCNs. We find how a high-frequency alternating field gives rise to pronounced nanomechanical changes at a critical frequency, which signals the electrical glass transition. Across this transition, collective motion of the liquid crystal molecules causes the network to yield from within, leading to network weakening and subsequent nonlinear expansion. These results unambiguously prove the existence of electroplasticization. Fine-tuning the induced emergence of plasticity will not only enhance the surface functionality but also enable more efficient conversion of electrical energy into mechanical work.

Conductive Shape Memory Microfiber Membranes with Core-Shell Structures and Electroactive Performance

Conductive shape memory polymers as a class of functional materials play a significant role in sensors and actuators. A high conductivity and a high response speed are needed in practical applications. In this work, a conductive shape memory polylactic acid (PLA) microfiber membrane was synthesized by combining electrospinning with chemical vapor polymerization. The shape memory PLA was electrospun into microfibers with different diameters, and a conductive polypyrrole (PPy) coating was applied to the PLA microfiber membranes using vapor polymerization. The conductivity of the microfiber membrane was investigated as a function of different experimental parameters: FeCl₃ concentration, PPy evaporation time, and PPy temperature. The maximum conductivity of the membrane prepared in a sub-zero environment is 0.5 S/cm, which can sustain a heat-generating electric current sufficient to trigger the electro-actuated behaviors of the membrane within 2 s at 30 V. Thermographic imaging was used to assess the uniformity of the temperature distribution during the shape recovery process. The low surface temperature is compatible with potential applications in many fields.

Dually actuated triple shape memory polymers of cross-linked polycyclooctene-carbon nanotube/polyethylene nanocomposites

In this work, electrically and thermally actuated triple shape memory polymers (SMPs) of chemically cross-linked polycyclooctene (PCO)-multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polyethylene (PE) nanocomposites with co-continuous structure and selective distribution of fillers in PCO phase are prepared. We systematically studied not only the microstructure including morphology and fillers' selective distribution in one phase of the PCO/PE blends, but also the macroscopic properties including thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. The co-continuous window of the immiscible PCO/PE blends is found to be the volume fraction of PCO (vPCO) of ca. 40-70 vol %. The selective distribution of fillers in one phase of co-continuous blends is obtained by a masterbatch technique. The prepared triple SMP materials show pronounced triple shape memory effects (SMEs) on the dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and the visual observation by both thermal and electric actuations. Such polyolefin samples with well-defined microstructure, electrical actuation, and triple SMEs might have potential applications as, for example, multiple autochoke elements for engines, self-adjusting orthodontic wires, and ophthalmic devices.
