Amplified Spontaneous Emission from Electron-Hole Quantum Droplets in Colloidal CdSe Nanoplatelets

Two-dimensional cadmium selenide nanoplatelets (NPLs) exhibit large absorption cross sections and homogeneously broadened band-edge transitions that offer utility in wide-ranging optoelectronic applications. Here, we examine the temperature-dependence of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in 4- and 5-monolayer thick NPLs and show that the threshold for close-packed (neat) films decreases with decreasing temperature by a factor of 2-10 relative to ambient temperature owing to extrinsic (trapping) and intrinsic (phonon-derived line width) factors. Interestingly, for pump intensities that exceed the ASE threshold, we find development of intense emission to lower energy in particular provided that the film temperature is ≤200 K. For NPLs diluted in an inert polymer, both biexcitonic ASE and low-energy emission are suppressed, suggesting that described neat-film observables rely upon high chromophore density and rapid, collective processes. Transient emission spectra reveal ultrafast red-shifting with the time of the lower energy emission. Taken together, these findings indicate a previously unreported process of amplified stimulated emission from polyexciton states that is consistent with quantum droplets and constitutes a form of exciton condensate. For studied samples, quantum droplets form provided that roughly 17 meV or less of thermal energy is available, which we hypothesize relates to polyexciton binding energy. Polyexciton ASE can produce pump-fluence-tunable red-shifted ASE even 120 meV lower in energy than biexciton ASE. Our findings convey the importance of biexciton and polyexciton populations in nanoplatelets and show that quantum droplets can exhibit light amplification at significantly lower photon energies than biexcitonic ASE.

Dual Functionality of 6-Methylthioguanine: Synergistic Effects Enhancing the Photolability of DNA Nucleobases

A small chemical modification of the nucleobase structure can significantly enhance the photoactivity of DNA, which may incur DNA damage, thus holding promising applications in photochemotherapy treatment of cancers or pathogens. However, single substitution confers only limited phototoxicity to DNA. Herein, we combine femtosecond and nanosecond time-resolved spectroscopy with high-level ab initio calculations to disentangle the excited-state dynamics of 6-methylthioguanine (me6-TG) under variable wavelength UVA excitation (310-330 nm). We find that double substitution of nucleobases (thionation and methylation) boosts the photoactivity by introducing more reactive channels. Intriguingly, 1nNπ*, rather than 1nSπ*, acts as the doorway state engendering the formation of the long-lived reactive triplet state in me6-TG. The 1nNπ* induces a low spin-orbit coupling of 8.3 cm-1, which increases the intersystem crossing (ISC) time (2.91 ± 0.14 ns). Despite the slowed ISC, the triplet quantum yield (ΦT) still accounts for a large fraction (0.6 ± 0.1), consistent with the potential energy surface that favors excited-state bifurcation to 1nNπ*min (3.36 ± 0.15 ps) rather than 1ππ*min (5.05 ± 0.26 ps), such that the subsequent ISC to triplet via 1nNπ*min constitutes the main relaxation pathway in me6-TG. Although this ΦT is inferior to its single-substituted predecessor 6-thioguanine (6-TG, 0.8 ± 0.2), the effect of thionation in synergy with methylation opens a unique C-S bond cleavage pathway through crossing to a repulsive 1πσ* state, generating thiyl radicals as highly reactive intermediates that may invoke biological damage. This photodissociation channel is extremely difficult for conventional nucleobases. These findings demonstrate the synergistic effects of double functionality substitution in modulating excited-state dynamics and enhancing the photolabile character of DNA nucleobases, providing inspirations for the rational design of advanced photodynamic and photochemotherapy approaches.

Excited-State Dynamics in All-Polymer Blends with Polymerized Small-Molecule Acceptors

Polymerizing small-molecular acceptors (SMAs) is a promising route to construct high performance polymer acceptors of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). After SMA polymerization, the microstructure of molecular packing is largely modified, which is essential in regulating the excited-state dynamics during the photon-to-current conversion. Nevertheless, the relationship between the molecular packing and excited-state dynamics in polymerized SMAs (PSMAs) remains poorly understood. Herein, the excited-state dynamics and molecular packing are investigated in the corresponding PSMA and SMA utilizing a combination of experimental and theoretical methods. This study finds that the charge separation from intra-moiety delocalized states (i-DEs) is much faster in blends with PSMAs, but the loosed π-π molecular packing suppresses the excitation conversion from the local excitation (LE) to the i-DE, leading to additional radiative losses from LEs. Moreover, the increased aggregations of PSMA in the blends decrease donor: acceptor interfaces, which reduces triplet losses from the bimolecular charge recombination. These findings suggest that excited-state dynamics may be manipulated by the molecular packing in blends with PSMAs to further optimize the performance of all-PSCs.

The Role of H-Bonds in the Excited-State Properties of Multichromophoric Systems: Static and Dynamic Aspects

Given their importance, hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) have been the subject of intense investigation since their discovery. Indeed, H-bonds play a fundamental role in determining the structure, the electronic properties, and the dynamics of complex systems, including biologically relevant materials such as DNA and proteins. While H-bonds have been largely investigated for systems in their electronic ground state, fewer studies have focused on how the presence of H-bonds could affect the static and dynamic properties of electronic excited states. This review presents an overview of the more relevant progress in studying the role of H-bond interactions in modulating excited-state features in multichromophoric biomimetic complex systems. The most promising spectroscopic techniques that can be used for investigating the H-bond effects in excited states and for characterizing the ultrafast processes associated with their dynamics are briefly summarized. Then, experimental insights into the modulation of the electronic properties resulting from the presence of H-bond interactions are provided, and the role of the H-bond in tuning the excited-state dynamics and the related photophysical processes is discussed.

In Cellulo Light-Induced Dynamics in a BODIPY-Perylene Dyad

BODIPY-based donor-acceptor dyads are widely used as sensors and probes in life science. Thus, their biophysical properties are well established in solution, while their photophysical properties in cellulo, i. e., in the environment, in which the dyes are designed to function, are generally understood less. To address this issue, we present a sub-ns time-resolved transient absorption study of the excited-state dynamics of a BODIPY-perylene dyad designed as a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) probe of the local viscosity in live cells.

Photodynamics of the Molecular Ruby [Cr(ddpd)2]3

The introduction of strong-field ligands can enable luminescence in first-row transition-metal complexes. In this way, earth-abundant near-infrared emitters can be obtained using early 3d metals. A prime example is the molecular ruby [Cr(ddpd)₂]³⁺ (ddpd = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine) that can achieve high phosphorescence quantum yields at room temperature in aqueous solution. To understand these remarkable properties, here, we simulate its photodynamics in water using trajectory surface hopping on linear vibronic coupling potentials parametrized from multiconfigurational CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations. We find that after excitation to the second absorption band, a relaxation cascade through metal-centered states occurs. After an initial back-and-forth intersystem crossing with higher-lying doublet states, the complex relaxes through a manifold of quartet metal-centered states to the low-lying doublet metal-centered states which are responsible for the experimentally observed emission. These electronic processes are driven by an elongation of the Cr-ligand bond lengths as well as the twisting motion of the trans-coordinated pyridine units in the ddpd ligands. The low-lying doublet states are reached within 1-2 ps and are close in geometry to the doublet minima, thus explaining the high phosphorescence quantum yield of the molecular ruby [Cr(ddpd)₂]³⁺.

Inter-Network Charge-Transfer Excited State Formation Within a Two-fold Catenated Metal-Organic Framework

Charge-transfer excited state (CTES) defines the ability to split photon energy into work producing redox equivalents suitable for photocatalysis. Here, we report inter-net CTES formation within a two-fold catenated crystalline metal-organic framework (MOF), constructed with two linkers, N,N'-di(4-pyridyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxydiimide (DPNDI) and 2,6-dicarboxynaphthalene (NDC). The structural flexibility puts two complementary linkers from two nets in a proximal position to interact strongly. Supported by the electrochemical and steady-state electronic spectroscopic data, this ground-state interaction facilitates forming CTES that can be populated by direct excitation. We map the dynamics of the CTES which persists over a few nanoseconds and highlight the utilities of such relatively long-lived CTES as enhanced conductivity of the MOF under light over that measured in dark and as a proof-of-the-principle test, photo-reduction of methyl viologen under white light.

Excited-State Dynamics of Proflavine after Intercalation into DNA Duplex

Proflavine is an acridine derivative which was discovered as one of the earliest antibacterial agents, and it has been proven to have potential application to fields such as chemotherapy, photobiology and solar-energy conversion. In particular, it is well known that proflavine can bind to DNA with different modes, and this may open addition photochemical-reaction channels in DNA. Herein, the excited-state dynamics of proflavine after intercalation into DNA duplex is studied using femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy, and compared with that in solution. It is demonstrated that both fluorescence and the triplet excited-state generation of proflavine were quenched after intercalation into DNA, due to ultrafast non-radiative channels. A static-quenching mechanism was identified for the proflavine-DNA complex, in line with the spectroscopy data, and the excited-state deactivation mechanism was proposed.

Photoinduced Intervalence Charge Transfers: Spectroscopic Tools to Study Fundamental Phenomena and Applications

The exploitation of excited state chemistry for solar energy conversion or photocatalysis has been continuously increasing, and the needs of a transition to a sustainable human development indicate this trend will continue. In this scenario, the study of mixed valence systems in the excited state offers a unique opportunity to explore excited state electron transfer reactivity, and, in a broader sense, excited state chemistry. This Concept article analyzes recent contributions in the field of photoinduced mixed valence systems, i. e. those where the mixed valence core is absent in the ground state but created upon light absorption. The focus is on the utilization of photoinduced intervalence charge transfer bands, detected via transient absorption spectroscopy, as key tools to study fundamental phenomena like donor/acceptor inversion, hole delocalization, coexistence of excited states and excited state nature, together with applications in molecular electronics.

Excited-State Dynamics of Crossing-Controlled Energy Transfer in Europium Complexes

Photosensitized energy transfer (EnT) phenomena occur frequently in a variety of photophysical and photochemical processes and have traditionally been treated with the donor-acceptor distance-dependent Förster and Dexter models. However, incorrect arguments and formulae were employed by ignoring energy resonance conditions and the selection rules of the state-to-state transition in special cases, especially for the sensitive intramolecular EnT of lanthanide complexes. Herein, we proposed an innovative model of energy-degeneracy-crossing-controlled EnT, which can be experimentally confirmed by time-resolved two-dimensional photoluminescence measurements. The computationally determined energy resonance region provides the most effective channel to achieve metal-to-ligand EnT beyond the distance-dependent model and sensitively bifurcates into symmetry-allowed or -forbidden channels for some representative europium antenna complexes. The outcomes of the multidisciplinary treatment contribute to a complementary EnT model that can be tuned by introducing a phosphorescence modulator and altering the antenna-related parameters of the ligand-centered energy level of the ³ππ* state and its spin-orbit coupling for the ³ππ* → S₀ ^* transition through mechanism-guided crystal engineering and should motivate further development of mechanistic models and applications.

Viscosity Effects on the Excited-State Dynamics of Indocyanine Green for Phototheranostic

The excited-state dynamics of indocyanine green (ICG) fundamentally determine its photophysical properties for phototheranostic. However, its dynamics are predictable to be susceptible toward intracellular viscosity due to its almost freely rotating structure, making the precise phototheranostic very challenging. Therefore, correlating the viscosity with the dynamics of ICG is of great importance and urgency for precise phototheranostic prospects. This study presents systemic investigations on the viscosity-dependent dynamics of ICG for phototheranostic. Femtosecond transient absorption experiments elucidate a prolonged radiative transition (225 ps vs 152 ps) for ICG in a viscous environment, which benefits fluorescence. Viscosity remarkably extends the triplet excited-state lifetime of ICG but reduces its internal conversion (6.2 ps vs 2.2 ps). The extended triplet lifetime affords sufficient photosensitization time to enhance photodynamic therapy. A moderative internal conversion is unfavorable for heat production, resulting in inferior photothermal therapy. With this clear picture of excitation energy state dissipation in mind, we readily identified the safety laser power density for precise phototheranostic. This work provides an insightful understanding of viscosity-relevant excited-state dynamics toward phototheranostic, which is also beneficial for designing novel ICG derivatives with improved phototheranostic performance.

Boosting the Self-Trapped Exciton Emission in Alloyed Cs2 (Ag/Na)InCl6 Double Perovskite via Cu+ Doping

Fundamental understanding of the effect of doping on the optical properties of 3D double perovskites (DPs) especially the dynamics of self-trapped excitons (STEs) is of vital importance for their optoelectronic applications. Herein, a unique strategy via Cu⁺ doping to achieve efficient STE emission in the alloyed lead-free Cs₂ (Ag/Na)InCl₆ DPs is reported. A small amount (1.0 mol%) of Cu⁺ doping results in boosted STE emission in the crystals, with photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield increasing from 19.0% to 62.6% and excitation band shifting from 310 to 365 nm. Temperature-dependent PL and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopies reveal that the remarkable PL enhancement originates from the increased radiative recombination rate and density of STEs, as a result of symmetry breakdown of the STE wavefunction at the octahedral Ag⁺ site. These findings provide deep insights into the STE dynamics in Cu⁺ -doped Cs₂ (Ag/Na)InCl₆ , thereby laying a foundation for the future design of new lead-free DPs with efficient STE emission.

Intramolecular Charge Transfer of Curcumin and Solvation Dynamics of DMSO Probed by Time-Resolved Raman Spectroscopy

Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of curcumin in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution in the excited state was investigated by femtosecond electronic and vibrational spectroscopy. Excited-state Raman spectra of curcumin in the locally-excited and charge-transferred (CT) state of the S₁ excited state were separated due to high temporal (<50 fs) and spectral (<10 cm⁻¹) resolutions of femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy. The ultrafast (0.6–0.8 ps) ICT and subsequent vibrational relaxation (6–9 ps) in the CT state were ubiquitously observed in the ground- and excited-state vibrational modes of the solute curcumin and the ν_CSC and ν_S=O modes of solvent DMSO. The ICT of curcumin in the excited state was preceded by the disruption of the solvation shells, including the breakage of hydrogen bonding between curcumin and DMSO molecules, which occurs at the ultrafast (20–50 fs) time scales.

Increased Photostability of the Integral mRNA Vaccine Component N1 -Methylpseudouridine Compared to Uridine

N1 -Methylation of pseudouridine (m1 ψ) replaces uridine (Urd) in several therapeutics, including the Moderna and BioNTech-Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. Importantly, however, it is currently unknown if exposure to electromagnetic radiation can affect the chemical integrity and intrinsic stability of m1 ψ. In this study, the photochemistry of m1 ψ is compared to that of uridine by using photoirradiation at 267 nm, steady-state spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. Furthermore, femtosecond transient absorption measurements are collected to delineate the electronic relaxation mechanisms for both nucleosides under physiologically relevant conditions. It is shown that m1 ψ exhibits a 12-fold longer 1 ππ* decay lifetime than uridine and a 5-fold higher fluorescence yield. Notably, however, the experimental results also demonstrate that most of the excited state population in both molecules decays back to the ground state in an ultrafast time scale and that m1 ψ is 6.7-fold more photostable than Urd following irradiation at 267 nm.

Effects of Ancillary Ligands on Deep Red to Near-Infrared Cyclometalated Iridium Complexes

The design of organometallic compounds with efficient phosphorescence in the deep red to near-infrared portions of the spectrum is a long-standing fundamental challenge. Here we describe a series of heteroleptic bis-cyclometalated iridium complexes with phosphorescence in these low-energy regions of the spectrum. The cyclometalating ligands in this study feature a metalated benzothiophene aryl group substituted with a quinoline, isoquinoline, or phenanthridine heterocycle. Increasing the conjugation on the heterocycle stabilizes the ligand-centered LUMO, decreases the HOMO-LUMO gap, and enables phosphorescence to occur at long wavelengths. These cyclometalating ligands are paired with a variety of electron-rich ancillary ligands, such as dithiocarbamate (dipdtc), β-ketoiminate (acNac), β-diketiminate (NacNac), amidinate (dipba), and hexahydropyrimidopyrimidine (hpp), some of which have significant influences on the phosphorescence wavelength and excited-state dynamics. The syntheses of seven compounds in this series are described, three of which are structurally validated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Cyclic voltammetry reveals the effects of ligand modification on the frontier orbital energies. The photophysical properties of all compounds are thoroughly characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and steady-state photoluminescence at room-temperature and 77 K. Photoluminescence quantum yields and lifetimes of all compounds are reported.

Intramolecular Charge Transfer of 1-Aminoanthraquinone and Ultrafast Solvation Dynamics of Dimethylsulfoxide

The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of 1-aminoanthraquinone (AAQ) in the excited state strongly depends on its solvent properties, and the twisted geometry of its amino group has been recommended for the twisted ICT (TICT) state by recent theoretical works. We report the transient Raman spectra of AAQ in a dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution by femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy to provide clear experimental evidence for the TICT state of AAQ. The ultrafast (~110 fs) TICT dynamics of AAQ were observed from the major vibrational modes of AAQ including the ν_C-N + δ_CH and ν_C=O modes. The coherent oscillations in the vibrational bands of AAQ strongly coupled to the nuclear coordinate for the TICT process have been observed, which showed its anharmonic coupling to the low frequency out of the plane deformation modes. The vibrational mode of solvent DMSO, ν_S=O showed a decrease in intensity, especially in the hydrogen-bonded species of DMSO, which clearly shows that the solvation dynamics of DMSO, including hydrogen bonding, are crucial to understanding the reaction dynamics of AAQ with the ultrafast structural changes accompanying the TICT.

A Unified View on Varied Ultrafast Dynamics of the Primary Process in Microbial Rhodopsins

All-trans to 13-cis photoisomerization of the protonated retinal Schiff base (PRSB) chromophore is the primary step that triggers various biological functions of microbial rhodopsins. While this ultrafast primary process has been extensively studied, it has been recognized that the relevant excited-state relaxation dynamics differ significantly from one rhodopsin to another. To elucidate the origin of the complicated ultrafast dynamics of the primary process in microbial rhodopsins, we studied the excited-state dynamics of proteorhodopsin, its D97N mutant, and bacteriorhodopsin by femtosecond time-resolved absorption (TA) spectroscopy in a wide pH range. The TA data showed that their excited-state relaxation dynamics drastically change when pH approaches the pK_a of the counterion residue of the PRSB chromophore in the ground state. This result reveals that the varied excited-state relaxation dynamics in different rhodopsins mainly originate from the difference of the ground-state heterogeneity (i.e., protonation/deprotonation of the PRSB counterion).

The Critical Number of Gold Atoms for a Metallic State Nanocluster: Resolving a Decades-Long Question

Probing the transition from a metallic state to a molecular state in gold nanoparticles is fundamentally important for understanding the origin of surface plasmon resonance and the nature of the metallic bond. Atomically precise gold nanoclusters are desired for probing such a transition based upon a series of precise sizes with X-ray structures. While the definition of the metallic state in nanoclusters is simple, that is, when the HOMO-LUMO gap (E_g) becomes negligibly small (E_g < k_BT, where k_B is the Boltzmann constant and T the temperature), the experimental determination of ultrasmall E_g (e.g., of k_BT level) is difficult, and the thermal excitation of valence electrons apparently comes into play in ultrasmall E_g nanoclusters. Although a sharp transition from nonmetallic Au₂₄₆(SR)₈₀ to metallic Au₂₇₉(SR)₈₄ (SR: thiolate) has been observed, there is still uncertainty about the transition region. Here, we summarize several criteria on determining the metallic state versus the molecular (or nonmetallic) state in gold nanoclusters, including (1) E_g determined by optical and electrochemical methods, (2) steady-state absorption spectra, (3) cryogenic optical spectra, (4) transient absorption spectra, (5) excited-state lifetime and power dependence, and (6) coherent oscillations in ultrafast electron dynamics. We emphasize that multiple analyses should be performed and cross-checked in practice because no single criterion is definitive. We also review the photophysics of several gold nanoclusters with nascent surface plasmon resonance. These criteria are expected to deepen the understanding of the metallic to molecular state transition of gold and other metal nanoclusters and also promote the design of functional nanomaterials and their applications.

The Quest to Simulate Excited-State Dynamics of Transition Metal Complexes

This Perspective describes current computational efforts in the field of simulating photodynamics of transition metal complexes. We present the typical workflows and feature the strengths and limitations of the different contemporary approaches. From electronic structure methods suitable to describe transition metal complexes to approaches able to simulate their nuclear dynamics under the effect of light, we give particular attention to build a bridge between theory and experiment by critically discussing the different models commonly adopted in the interpretation of spectroscopic experiments and the simulation of particular observables. Thereby, we review all the studies of excited-state dynamics on transition metal complexes, both in gas phase and in solution from reduced to full dimensionality.

Optical Properties and Excited-State Dynamics of Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters

Understanding the excited-state dynamics of nanomaterials is essential to their applications in photoenergy storage and conversion. This review summarizes recent progress in the excited-state dynamics of atomically precise gold (Au) nanoclusters (NCs). We first discuss the electronic structure and typical relaxation pathways of Au NCs from subpicoseconds to microseconds. Unlike plasmonic Au nanoparticles, in which collective electron excitation dominates, Au NCs show single-electron transitions and molecule-like exciton dynamics. The size-, shape-, structure-, and composition-dependent dynamics in Au NCs are further discussed in detail. For small-sized Au NCs, strong quantum confinement effects give rise to relaxation dynamics that is significantly dependent on atomic packing, shape, and heteroatom doping. For relatively larger-sized Au NCs, strong size dependence can be observed in exciton and electron dynamics. We also discuss the origin of coherent oscillations and their roles in excited-state relaxation. Finally, we provide our perspective on future directions in this area.

Impact of Vibrational Modes in the Plasmonic Purcell Effect of Organic Molecules

By means of quantum tensor network calculations, we investigate the large Purcell effect experienced by an organic molecule placed in the vicinity of a plasmonic nanostructure. In particular, we consider a donor-π bridge-acceptor dye at the gap of two Ag nanospheres. Our theoretical approach allows for a realistic description of the continua of both molecular vibrations and optical nanocavity modes. We analyze both the ultrafast exciton dynamics in the large Purcell enhancement regime and the corresponding emission spectrum, showing that these magnitudes are not accurately represented by the simplified models used up to date. Specifically, both the two-level system model and the single vibrational mode model can only reproduce the dynamics over short time scales, whereas the Fermi's golden rule approach accounts only for the behavior at very long times. We demonstrate that including the whole set of vibrational modes is necessary to capture most of the dynamics and the corresponding spectrum. Moreover, by disentangling the coupling of the molecule to radiative and nonradiative plasmonic modes, we also shed light into the quenching phenomenology taking place in the system.

Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer State of a "Push-Pull" Emitter

The excited state Raman spectra of 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) in the locally-excited (LE) and the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) states have been separately measured by time-resolved stimulated Raman spectroscopy. In a polar dimethylsulfoxide solution, the ultrafast ICT of DCM with a time constant of 1.0 ps was observed in addition to the vibrational relaxation in the ICT state of 4–7 ps. On the other hand, the energy of the ICT state of DCM becomes higher than that of the LE state in a less polar chloroform solution, where the initially-photoexcited ICT state with the LE state shows the ultrafast internal conversion to the LE state with a time constant of 300 fs. The excited-state Raman spectra of the LE and ICT state of DCM showed several major vibrational modes of DCM in the LE and ICT conformer states coexisting in the excited state. Comparing to the time-dependent density functional theory simulations and the experimental results of similar push-pull type molecules, a twisted geometry of the dimethylamino group is suggested for the structure of DCM in the S₁/ICT state.

Excited State Lifetimes of Sulfur-Substituted DNA and RNA Monomers Probed Using the Femtosecond Fluorescence Up-Conversion Technique

Sulfur-substituted DNA and RNA nucleobase derivatives (a.k.a., thiobases) are an important family of biomolecules. They are used as prodrugs and as chemotherapeutic agents in medical settings, and as photocrosslinker molecules in structural-biology applications. Remarkably, excitation of thiobases with ultraviolet to near-visible light results in the population of long-lived and reactive triplet states on a time scale of hundreds of femtoseconds and with near-unity yields. This efficient nonradiative decay pathway explains the vanishingly small fluorescence yields reported for the thiobases and the scarcity of fluorescence lifetimes in the literature. In this study, we report fluorescence lifetimes for twelve thiobase derivatives, both in aqueous solution at physiological pH and in acetonitrile. Excitation is performed at 267 and 362 nm, while fluorescence emission is detected at 380, 425, 450, 525, or 532 nm. All the investigated thiobases reveal fluorescence lifetimes that decay in a few hundreds of femtoseconds and with magnitudes that depend and are sensitive to the position and degree of sulfur-atom substitution and on the solvent environment. Interestingly, however, three thiopyrimidine derivatives (i.e., 2-thiocytidine, 2-thiouridine, and 4-thiothymidine) also exhibit a small amplitude fluorescence component of a few picoseconds in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the N-glycosylation of thiobases to form DNA or RNA nucleoside analogues is demonstrated as affecting their fluorescence lifetimes. In aqueous solution, the fluorescence decay signals exciting at 267 nm are equal or slower than those collected exciting at 362 nm. In acetonitrile, however, the fluorescence decay signals recorded upon 267 nm excitation are, in all cases, faster than those measured exciting at 362 nm. A comparison to the literature values show that, while both the DNA and RNA nucleobase and thiobase derivatives exhibit sub-picosecond fluorescence lifetimes, the ¹ππ* excited-state population in the nucleobase monomers primarily decay back to the ground state, whereas it predominantly populates long-lived and reactive triplet states in thiobase monomers.

Halogen-Bond Assisted Photoinduced Electron Transfer

The formation of a halogen-bond (XB) complex in the excited state was recently reported with a quadrupolar acceptor–donor–acceptor dye in two iodine-based liquids (J. Phys. Chem. Lett.2017, 8, 3927–3932). The ultrafast decay of this excited complex to the ground state was ascribed to an electron transfer quenching by the XB donors. We examined the mechanism of this process by investigating the quenching dynamics of the dye in the S₁ state using the same two iodo-compounds diluted in inert solvents. The results were compared with those obtained with a non-halogenated electron acceptor, fumaronitrile. Whereas quenching by fumaronitrile was found to be diffusion controlled, that by the two XB compounds is slower, despite a larger driving force for electron transfer. A Smoluchowski–Collins–Kimball analysis of the excited-state population decays reveals that both the intrinsic quenching rate constant and the quenching radius are significantly smaller with the XB compounds. These results point to much stronger orientational constraint for quenching with the XB compounds, indicating that electron transfer occurs upon formation of the halogen bond.

Nonradiative Excited-State Decay via Conical Intersection in Graphene Nanostructures

Chemical groups are known to tune the luminescent efficiencies of graphene-related nanomaterials, but some species, including the epoxide group (-COC-), are suspected to act as emission-quenching sites. Herein, by performing nonadiabatic excited-state dynamics simulations, we reveal a fast (within 300 fs) nonradiative excited-state decay of a graphene epoxide nanostructure from the lowest excited singlet (S₁ ) state to the ground (S₀ ) state via a conical intersection (CI), at which the energy difference between the S₁ and S₀ states is approximately zero. This CI is induced after breaking one C-O bond at the -COC- moiety during excited-state structural relaxation. This study ascertains the role of epoxide groups in inducing the nonradiative recombination of the excited electron-hole, providing important insights into the CI-promoted nonradiative de-excitations and the luminescence tuning of relevant materials. In addition, it shows the feasibility of utilizing nonadiabatic excited-state dynamics simulations to investigate the photophysical processes of the excited states of graphene nanomaterials.

Engineering opposite electronic polarization of singlet and triplet states increases the yield of high-energy photoproducts

Efficient photosynthetic energy conversion requires quantitative, light-driven formation of high-energy, charge-separated states. However, energies of high-lying excited states are rarely extracted, in part because the congested density of states in the excited-state manifold leads to rapid deactivation. Conventional photosystem designs promote electron transfer (ET) by polarizing excited donor electron density toward the acceptor ("one-way" ET), a form of positive design. Curiously, negative design strategies that explicitly avoid unwanted side reactions have been underexplored. We report here that electronic polarization of a molecular chromophore can be used as both a positive and negative design element in a light-driven reaction. Intriguingly, prudent engineering of polarized excited states can steer a "U-turn" ET-where the excited electron density of the donor is initially pushed away from the acceptor-to outcompete a conventional one-way ET scheme. We directly compare one-way vs. U-turn ET strategies via a linked donor-acceptor (DA) assembly in which selective optical excitation produces donor excited states polarized either toward or away from the acceptor. Ultrafast spectroscopy of DA pinpoints the importance of realizing donor singlet and triplet excited states that have opposite electronic polarizations to shut down intersystem crossing. These results demonstrate that oppositely polarized electronically excited states can be employed to steer photoexcited states toward useful, high-energy products by routing these excited states away from states that are photosynthetic dead ends.

Chemical interactions and dynamics with femtosecond X-ray spectroscopy and the role of X-ray free-electron lasers

X-ray free-electron lasers with intense, tuneable and short-pulse X-ray radiation are transformative tools for the investigation of transition-metal complexes and metalloproteins. This becomes apparent in particular when combining the experimental observables from X-ray spectroscopy with modern theoretical tools for calculations of electronic structures and X-ray spectra from first principles. The combination gives new insights into how charge and spin densities change in chemical reactions and how they determine reactivity. This is demonstrated for the investigations of structural dynamics with metal K-edge absorption spectroscopy, spin states in excited-state dynamics with metal 3p-3d exchange interactions, the frontier-orbital interactions in dissociation and substitution reactions with metal-specific X-ray spectroscopy, and studies of metal oxidation states with femtosecond pulses for 'probe-before-destroy' spectroscopy. The role of X-ray free-electron lasers is addressed with thoughts about how they enable 'bringing back together' different aspects of the same problem and this is thought to go beyond a conventional review paper where these aspects are formulated in italic font type in a prequel, an interlude and in a sequel. Synthesis and Electrochemical and Photophysical Properties of Azaterrylene Derivatives

A series of terrylene derivatives, such as monoazaterrylene (MATerry), 1,6-diazaterrylene (DiATerry) and pristine terrylene (Terry), were synthesized by changing the number of nitrogen atoms at the bay region (1 and 6 positions of the Terry core). The electrochemical measurements suggested that the first one-electron reduction and oxidation potentials became positively shifted with increasing numbers of nitrogen atoms. This agreed with the energies of the corresponding highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) states estimated by DFT methods. In contrast, the HOMO-LUMO gaps approximately remained constant. This trend is quite similar to the spectroscopic behaviors observed by absorption and fluorescence spectra. The solvent polarity-dependent spectroscopic trends of DiATerry suggested the intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) characters. The evaluation of the excited-state dynamics in various solvents indicated the electronic configurational changes of the excited states relative to the ground state via the ICT. This was supported by the Lippert-Mataga plots. Finally, the reversible protonation and deprotonation processes were also observed.

Spectroscopic Evidence for the Contribution of Holes to the Bleach of Cd-Chalcogenide Quantum Dots

In transient absorption (TA) measurements on Cd-chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs), the presence of a band-edge (BE) bleach signal is commonly attributed entirely to conduction-band electrons in the 1S(e) state, neglecting contributions from BE holes. While this has been the accepted view for more than 20 years, and has often been used to distinguish electron and hole kinetics, the reason for the absence of a hole contribution to the BE-bleach has remained unclear. Here, we show with three independent experiments that holes do in fact have a significant impact on the BE-bleach of well-passivated Cd-chalcogenide QD samples. Transient absorption experiments on high photoluminescence quantum yield CdSe/CdS/ZnS core-shell-shell QDs clearly show an increase of the band-edge bleach as holes cool down to the band edge. The relative contribution of electron-to-hole bleach is 2:1, as predicted by theory. The same measurements on core-only CdSe QDs with a lower quantum yield do not show a contribution of holes to the band-edge bleach. We assign the lack of hole bleach to the presence of ultrafast hole trapping in samples with insufficient passivation of the QD surface. In addition, we show measurements of optical gain in core-shell-shell QD solutions, providing clear evidence of a significant hole contribution to the BE transient absorption signal. Finally, we present spectroelectrochemical measurements on CdTe QDs films, showing the presence of a BE-bleach for both electron and hole injections. The presence of a contribution of holes to the bleach in passivated Cd-chalcogenides QDs bears important implications for quantitative studies on optical gain as well as for TA determinations of carrier dynamics.

Light on the Structural Evolution of Photoresponsive Molecular Switches in Electronically Excited States

Stimuli-responsive materials are attracting extensive interest as they offer the opportunity to transform external inputs such as light into a functionality by control at the molecular level. As a result, a large number of molecular building units have been developed that enable switching between two or more states. Since the trajectory describing the transition between the various states defines the efficiency of the usually immobilized unit and the resulting functionality, it does not suffice to merely consider the initial and final states of the switching process. A key challenge is in fact to decipher at the atomic scale the actual motion that takes place after photoexcitation. Understanding and being able to manipulate this trajectory is crucial for an efficient implementation of photoactive molecular switches into functional materials, as well as to rationally develop novel tailor-made materials. In this Concept article, we highlight the potential to characterize in detail photoinitiated switching mechanisms by combining quantum chemical calculations with advanced laser spectroscopic techniques that probe the vibrational manifold of electronically excited states and its evolution.

Coupled Excited-State Dynamics in N-Substituted 2-Methoxy-9-Acridones

Fluorophores of the acridone family have been widely employed in many applications, such as DNA sequencing, the detection of biomolecules, and the monitoring of enzymatic systems, as well as being the bases of intracellular sensors and even antitumoral agents. They have been widely used in fluorescence imaging due to their excellent photophysical properties, in terms of quantum yield and stability. However, frequently, the fluorescence emission data from acridones are not easily interpretable due to complex excited-state dynamics. The formation of π-stacking aggregates and excimers and excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reactions usually result in emission features that are dependent on the experimental conditions. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the dynamics involved in the excited-state transients of these dyes is mandatory for their appropriate application. Herein, we synthesized and fully characterized different 2-methoxy-9-acridone dyes. Their transient fluorescence emission spectra exhibited a complex dynamic behavior that can be linked to several excited-state reactions. We performed a thorough study of the excited-state dynamics of these dyes by means of time-resolved fluorimetry supported by computational calculations. All this allowed us to establish a multistate kinetic scheme, involving an ESPT reaction coupled to an excimer formation process. We have unraveled the rich dynamics behind this complex behavior, which provides a better understanding of the excited states of these dyes.

Lifetime dynamics of plasmons in the few-atom limit

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules are essentially graphene in the subnanometer limit, typically consisting of 50 or fewer atoms. With the addition or removal of a single electron, these molecules can support molecular plasmon (collective) resonances in the visible region of the spectrum. Here, we probe the plasmon dynamics in these quantum systems by measuring the excited-state lifetime of three negatively charged PAH molecules: anthanthrene, benzo[ghi]perylene, and perylene. In contrast to the molecules in their neutral state, these three systems exhibit far more rapid decay dynamics due to the deexcitation of multiple electron-hole pairs through molecular plasmon "dephasing" and vibrational relaxation. This study provides a look into the distinction between collective and single-electron excitation dynamics in the purely quantum limit and introduces a conceptual framework with which to visualize molecular plasmon decay.

Quenching Pathways in NaYF4:Er3+,Yb3+ Upconversion Nanocrystals

Lanthanide-doped upconversion (UC) phosphors absorb low-energy infrared light and convert it into higher-energy visible light. Despite over 10 years of development, it has not been possible to synthesize nanocrystals (NCs) with UC efficiencies on a par with what can be achieved in bulk materials. To guide the design and realization of more efficient UC NCs, a better understanding is necessary of the loss pathways competing with UC. Here we study the excited-state dynamics of the workhorse UC material β-NaYF4 co-doped with Yb3+ and Er3+. For each of the energy levels involved in infrared-to-visible UC, we measure and model the competition between spontaneous emission, energy transfer between lanthanide ions, and other decay processes. An important quenching pathway is energy transfer to high-energy vibrations of solvent and/or ligand molecules surrounding the NCs, as evidenced by the effect of energy resonances between electronic transitions of the lanthanide ions and vibrations of the solvent molecules. We present a microscopic quantitative model for the quenching dynamics in UC NCs. It takes into account cross-relaxation at high lanthanide-doping concentration as well as Förster resonance energy transfer from lanthanide excited states to vibrational modes of molecules surrounding the UC NCs. Our model thereby provides insight in the inert-shell thickness required to prevent solvent quenching in NCs. Overall, the strongest contribution to reduced UC efficiencies in core-shell NCs comes from quenching of the near-infrared energy levels (Er3+: 4I11/2 and Yb3+: 2F5/2), which is likely due to vibrational coupling to OH- defects incorporated in the NCs during synthesis.

Conformational Planarization versus Singlet Fission: Distinct Excited-State Dynamics of Cyclooctatetraene-Fused Acene Dimers

A set of flapping acene dimers fused with an 8π cyclooctatetraene (COT) ring showed distinct excited-state dynamics in solution. While the anthracene dimer showed a fast V-shaped-to-planar conformational change within 10 ps in the lowest excited singlet state, reminding us of extended Baird aromaticity, the tetracene dimer and the pentacene dimer underwent intramolecular singlet fission (SF) in different manners: A fast and reversible SF with a characteristic delayed fluorescence (FL), and a fast and quantitative SF, respectively. Conformational flexibility of the fused COT linkage plays an important role in these ultrafast dynamics, demonstrating the utility of the flapping molecular series as a versatile platform for designing photofunctional systems.

Excited-State Dynamics of the Thiopurine Prodrug 6-Thioguanine: Can N9-Glycosylation Affect Its Phototoxic Activity?

6-Thioguanine, an immunosuppressant and anticancer prodrug, has been shown to induce DNA damage and cell death following exposure to UVA radiation. Its metabolite, 6-thioguanosine, plays a major role in the prodrug's overall photoreactivity. However, 6-thioguanine itself has proven to be cytotoxic following UVA irradiation, warranting further investigation into its excited-state dynamics. In this contribution, the excited-state dynamics and photochemical properties of 6-thioguanine are studied in aqueous solution following UVA excitation at 345 nm in order to provide mechanistic insight regarding its photochemical reactivity and to scrutinize whether N9-glycosylation modulates its phototoxicity in solution. The experimental results are complemented with time-dependent density functional calculations that include solvent dielectric effects by means of a reaction-field solvation model. UVA excitation results in the initial population of the S₂(ππ*) state, which is followed by ultrafast internal conversion to the S₁(nπ*) state and then intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold within 560 ± 60 fs. A small fraction (ca. 25%) of the population that reaches the S₁(nπ*) state repopulates the ground state. The T₁(ππ*) state decays to the ground state in 1.4 ± 0.2 μs under N₂-purged conditions, using a 0.2 mM concentration of 6-thioguanine, or it can sensitize singlet oxygen in 0.21 ± 0.02 and 0.23 ± 0.02 yields in air- and O₂-saturated solution, respectively. This demonstrates the efficacy of 6-thioguanine to act as a Type II photosensitizer. N9-glycosylation increases the rate of intersystem crossing from the singlet to triplet manifold, as well as from the T₁(ππ*) state to the ground state, which lead to a ca. 40% decrease in the singlet oxygen yield under air-saturated conditions. Enhanced vibronic coupling between the singlet and triplet manifolds due to a higher density of vibrational states is proposed to be responsible for the observed increase in the rates of intersystem crossing in 6-thioguanine upon N9-glycosylation.

Electronic Structure and Excited-State Dynamics of an Arduengo-Type Carbene and its Imidazolone Oxidation Product

We describe an investigation of the excited-state dynamics of isolated 1,3-di-tert-butyl-imidazoline-2-ylidene (tBu₂ Im, C₁₁ H₂₀ N₂ , m/z=180), an Arduengo-type carbene, by time- and frequency-resolved photoionization using a picosecond laser system. The energies of several singlet and triplet excited states were calculated by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The S₁ state of the carbene deactivates on a 100 ps time scale possibly by intersystem crossing. In the experiments we observed an additional signal at m/z=196, that was assigned to the oxidation product 1,3-di-tert-butyl-imidazolone, tBu₂ ImO. It shows a well-resolved resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectrum with an origin located at 36951 cm^-1 . Several low-lying vibrational bands could be assigned, with a lifetime that depends strongly on the excitation energy. At the origin the lifetime is longer than 3 ns, but drops to 49 ps at higher excess energies. To confirm formation of the imidazolone we also performed experiments on benzimidazolone (BzImO) for comparison. Apart from a redshift for BzImO the spectra of the two compounds are very similar. The TD-DFT values display a very good agreement with the experimental data.

Ultrafast Photoprotecting Sunscreens in Natural Plants

We explore the ultrafast photoprotective properties of a series of sinapic acid derivatives in a range of solvents, utilizing femtosecond transient electronic absorption spectroscopy. We find that a primary relaxation mechanism displayed by the plant sunscreen sinapoyl malate and other related molecular species may be understood as a multistep process involving internal conversion of the initially photoexcited 1(1)ππ* state along a trans-cis photoisomerization coordinate, leading to the repopulation of the original trans ground-state isomer or the formation of a stable cis isomer.

Direct Observation of Triplet-State Population Dynamics in the RNA Uracil Derivative 1-Cyclohexyluracil

Investigation of the excited-state dynamics in nucleic acid monomers is an area of active research due to the crucial role these early events play in DNA and RNA photodamage. The dynamics and rate at which the triplet state is populated are key mechanistic pathways yet to be fully elucidated. Direct spectroscopic evidence is presented in this contribution for intersystem crossing dynamics in a uracil derivative, 1-cyclohexyluracil. It is shown that intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold occurs in one picosecond or less in acetonitrile solution-at least an order of magnitude faster than previously estimated experimentally. Broadband transient absorption measurements also reveal the primary electronic relaxation pathways of the uracil chromophore, including the absorption spectra of the (1)ππ*, (1)nπ*, and (3)ππ* states and the rates of vibrational cooling in the ground and (3)ππ* states. The experimental results are supported by density functional calculations.

Exceptional Excited-State Lifetime of an Iron(II)-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complex Explained

Earth-abundant transition-metal complexes are desirable for sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells or photocatalysts. Iron is an obvious choice, but the energy level structure of its typical polypyridyl complexes, featuring low-lying metal-centered states, has made such complexes useless as energy converters. Recently, we synthesized a novel iron-N-heterocyclic carbene complex exhibiting a remarkable 100-fold increase of the lifetime compared to previously known iron(II) complexes. Here, we rationalize the measured excited-state dynamics with DFT and TD-DFT calculations. The calculations show that the exceptionally long excited-state lifetime (∼9 ps) is achieved for this Fe complex through a significant destabilization of both triplet and quintet metal-centered scavenger states compared to other Fe(II) complexes. In addition, a shallow (3)MLCT potential energy surface with a low-energy transition path from the (3)MLCT to (3)MC and facile crossing from the (3)MC state to the ground state are identified as key features for the excited-state deactivation.

Mapping the Ultrafast Dynamics of Adenine onto Its Nucleotide and Oligonucleotides by Time-Resolved Photoelectron Imaging

The intrinsic photophysics of nucleobases and nucleotides following UV absorption presents a key reductionist step toward understanding the complex photodamage mechanisms occurring in DNA. The decay mechanism of adenine in particular has been the focus of intense investigation, as has how these correlate to those of its more biologically relevant nucleotide and oligonucleotides in aqueous solution. Here, we report on time-resolved photoelectron imaging of the deprotonated 3'-deoxy-adenosine-5'-monophosphate nucleotide and the adenosine di- and trinucleotides. Through a comparison of gas- and solution-phase experiments and available theoretical studies, the dynamics of the base are shown to be relatively insensitive to the surrounding environment. The decay mechanism primarily involves internal conversion from the initially populated (1)ππ* states to the ground state. The relaxation dynamics of the adenosine oligonucleotides are similar to those of the nucleobase, in contrast to the aqueous oligonucleotides, where a fraction of the ensemble forms long-lived excimer states.

Solvent Environment Revealed by Positively Chirped Pulses

The spectroscopy of large organic molecules and biomolecules in solution has been investigated using various time-resolved and frequency-resolved techniques. Of particular interest is the early response of the molecule and the solvent, which is difficult to study due to the ambiguity in assigning and differentiating inter- and intramolecular contributions to the electronic and vibrational populations and coherence. Our measurements compare the yield of fluorescence and stimulated emission for two laser dyes IR144 and IR125 as a function of chirp. While negatively chirped pulses are insensitive to solvent viscosity, positively chirped pulses are found to be uniquely sensitive probes of solvent viscosity. The fluorescence maximum for IR125 is observed near transform-limited pulses; however, for IR144, it is observed for positively chirped pulses once the pulses have been stretched to hundreds of femtoseconds. We conclude that chirped pulse spectroscopy is a simple one-beam method that is sensitive to early solvation dynamics.

Mapping the Relation between Stacking Geometries and Singlet Fission Yield in a Class of Organic Crystals

By generating two free charge carriers from a single high-energy photon, singlet fission (SF) promises to significantly improve the efficiency of a class of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). However, SF is generally a very inefficient process with only a small number of absorbed photons successfully converting into triplet states. In this Letter, we map the relation between stacking geometry and SF yield in crystals based on perylenediimide (PDI) derivatives. This structure-function analysis provides a potential explanation for the SF yield discrepancies observed among similar molecular crystals and may help to identify favorable geometries that lead to an optimal SF yield. Exploring the subtle relationship between stacking geometry and SF yield, this Letter suggests using crystal structure engineering to improve the design of SF-based OPVs.

Femtosecond Intersystem Crossing in the DNA Nucleobase Cytosine

Ab initio molecular dynamics including nonadiabatic and spin-orbit couplings on equal footing is used to unravel the deactivation of cytosine after UV light absorption. Intersystem crossing (ISC) is found to compete directly with internal conversion in tens of femtoseconds, thus making cytosine the organic compound with the fastest triplet population calculated so far. It is found that close degeneracy between singlet and triplet states can more than compensate for very small spin-orbit couplings, leading to efficient ISC. The femtosecond nature of the ISC process highlights its importance in photochemistry and challenges the conventional view that large singlet-triplet couplings are required for an efficient population flow into triplet states. These findings are important to understand DNA photostability and the photochemistry and dynamics of organic molecules in general.

Excitation Energy-Transfer Dynamics of Brown Algal Photosynthetic Antennas

Fucoxanthin-chlorophyll-a/c protein (FCP) complexes from brown algae Cladosiphon okamuranus TOKIDA (Okinawa Mozuku in Japanese) contain the only species of carbonyl carotenoid, fucoxanthin, which exhibits spectral characteristics attributed to an intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) property that arises in polar environments due to the presence of the carbonyl group in its polyene backbone. Here, we investigated the role of the ICT property of fucoxanthin in ultrafast energy transfer to chlorophyll-a/c in brown algal photosynthesis using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopic measurements. The observed excited-state dynamics show that the ICT character of fucoxanthin in FCP extends its absorption band to longer wavelengths and enhances its electronic interaction with chlorophyll-a molecules, leading to efficient energy transfer from fucoxanthin to chlorophyll-a.
