TLFND: A Multimodal Fusion Model Based on Three-Level Feature Matching Distance for Fake News Detection

In the rapidly evolving information era, the dissemination of information has become swifter and more extensive. Fake news, in particular, spreads more rapidly and is produced at a lower cost compared to genuine news. While researchers have developed various methods for the automated detection of fake news, challenges such as the presence of multimodal information in news articles or insufficient multimodal data have hindered their detection efficacy. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel multimodal fusion model (TLFND) based on a three-level feature matching distance approach for fake news detection. TLFND comprises four core components: a two-level text feature extraction module, an image extraction and fusion module, a three-level feature matching score module, and a multimodal integrated recognition module. This model seamlessly combines two levels of text information (headline and body) and image data (multi-image fusion) within news articles. Notably, we introduce the Chebyshev distance metric for the first time to calculate matching scores among these three modalities. Additionally, we design an adaptive evolutionary algorithm for computing the loss functions of the four model components. Our comprehensive experiments on three real-world publicly available datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed model, with remarkable improvements demonstrated across all four evaluation metrics for the PolitiFact, GossipCop, and Twitter datasets, resulting in an F1 score increase of 6.6%, 2.9%, and 2.3%, respectively.

Multi-Modal Fake News Detection via Bridging the Gap between Modals

Multi-modal fake news detection aims to identify fake information through text and corresponding images. The current methods purely combine images and text scenarios by a vanilla attention module but there exists a semantic gap between different scenarios. To address this issue, we introduce an image caption-based method to enhance the model's ability to capture semantic information from images. Formally, we integrate image description information into the text to bridge the semantic gap between text and images. Moreover, to optimize image utilization and enhance the semantic interaction between images and text, we combine global and object features from the images for the final representation. Finally, we leverage a transformer to fuse the above multi-modal content. We carried out extensive experiments on two publicly available datasets, and the results show that our proposed method significantly improves performance compared to other existing methods.

Fake News Detection Model on Social Media by Leveraging Sentiment Analysis of News Content and Emotion Analysis of Users' Comments

Nowadays, social media has become the main source of news around the world. The spread of fake news on social networks has become a serious global issue, damaging many aspects, such as political, economic, and social aspects, and negatively affecting the lives of citizens. Fake news often carries negative sentiments, and the public's response to it carries the emotions of surprise, fear, and disgust. In this article, we extracted features based on sentiment analysis of news articles and emotion analysis of users' comments regarding this news. These features were fed, along with the content feature of the news, to the proposed bidirectional long short-term memory model to detect fake news. We used the standard Fakeddit dataset that contains news titles and comments posted regarding them to train and test the proposed model. The suggested model, using extracted features, provided a high detection accuracy of 96.77% of the Area under the ROC Curve measure, which is higher than what other state-of-the-art studies offer. The results prove that the features extracted based on sentiment analysis of news, which represents the publisher's stance, and emotion analysis of comments, which represent the crowd's stance, contribute to raising the efficiency of the detection model.

Deep Ensemble Fake News Detection Model Using Sequential Deep Learning Technique

Recently, fake news has been widely spread through the Internet due to the increased use of social media for communication. Fake news has become a significant concern due to its harmful impact on individual attitudes and the community's behavior. Researchers and social media service providers have commonly utilized artificial intelligence techniques in the recent few years to rein in fake news propagation. However, fake news detection is challenging due to the use of political language and the high linguistic similarities between real and fake news. In addition, most news sentences are short, therefore finding valuable representative features that machine learning classifiers can use to distinguish between fake and authentic news is difficult because both false and legitimate news have comparable language traits. Existing fake news solutions suffer from low detection performance due to improper representation and model design. This study aims at improving the detection accuracy by proposing a deep ensemble fake news detection model using the sequential deep learning technique. The proposed model was constructed in three phases. In the first phase, features were extracted from news contents, preprocessed using natural language processing techniques, enriched using n-gram, and represented using the term frequency-inverse term frequency technique. In the second phase, an ensemble model based on deep learning was constructed as follows. Multiple binary classifiers were trained using sequential deep learning networks to extract the representative hidden features that could accurately classify news types. In the third phase, a multi-class classifier was constructed based on multilayer perceptron (MLP) and trained using the features extracted from the aggregated outputs of the deep learning-based binary classifiers for final classification. The two popular and well-known datasets (LIAR and ISOT) were used with different classifiers to benchmark the proposed model. Compared with the state-of-the-art models, which use deep contextualized representation with convolutional neural network (CNN), the proposed model shows significant improvements (2.41%) in the overall performance in terms of the F1score for the LIAR dataset, which is more challenging than other datasets. Meanwhile, the proposed model achieves 100% accuracy with ISOT. The study demonstrates that traditional features extracted from news content with proper model design outperform the existing models that were constructed based on text embedding techniques.

Deep transfer learning for COVID-19 fake news detection in Persian

The spread of fake news on social media has increased dramatically in recent years. Hence, fake news detection systems have received researchers' attention globally. During the COVID-19 outbreak in 2019 and the worldwide epidemic, the importance of this issue becomes more apparent. Due to the importance of the issue, a large number of researchers have begun to collect English datasets and to study COVID-19 fake news detection. However, there are a large number of low-resource languages, including Persian, that cannot develop accurate tools for automatic COVID-19 fake news detection due to the lack of annotated data for the task. In this article, we aim to develop a corpus for Persian in the domain of COVID-19 where the fake news is annotated and to provide a model for detecting Persian COVID-19 fake news. With the impressive advancement of multilingual pre-trained language models, the idea of cross-lingual transfer learning can be proposed to improve the generalization of models trained with low-resource language datasets. Accordingly, we use the state-of-the-art deep cross-lingual contextualized language model, XLM-RoBERTa, and the parallel convolutional neural networks to detect Persian COVID-19 fake news. Moreover, we use the idea of knowledge transferring across-domains to improve the results by using both the English COVID-19 dataset and the general domain Persian fake news dataset. The combination of both cross-lingual and cross-domain transfer learning has outperformed the models and it has beaten the baseline by 2.39% significantly.

Detecting Misleading Information on COVID-19

This article addresses the problem of detecting misleading information related to COVID-19. We propose a misleading-information detection model that relies on the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the United Nations as sources of information, as well as epidemiological material collected from a range of fact-checking websites. Obtaining data from reliable sources should assure their validity. We use this collected ground-truth data to build a detection system that uses machine learning to identify misleading information. Ten machine learning algorithms, with seven feature extraction techniques, are used to construct a voting ensemble machine learning classifier. We perform 5-fold cross-validation to check the validity of the collected data and report the evaluation of twelve performance metrics. The evaluation results indicate the quality and validity of the collected ground-truth data and their effectiveness in constructing models to detect misleading information.

Edge Computing and Blockchain for Quick Fake News Detection in IoV

The dissemination of false messages in Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has a negative impact on road safety and traffic efficiency. Therefore, it is critical to quickly detect fake news considering news timeliness in IoV. We propose a network computing framework Quick Fake News Detection (QcFND) in this paper, which exploits the technologies from Software-Defined Networking (SDN), edge computing, blockchain, and Bayesian networks. QcFND consists of two tiers: edge and vehicles. The edge is composed of Software-Defined Road Side Units (SDRSUs), which is extended from traditional Road Side Units (RSUs) and hosts virtual machines such as SDN controllers and blockchain servers. The SDN controllers help to implement the load balancing on IoV. The blockchain servers accommodate the reports submitted by vehicles and calculate the probability of the presence of a traffic event, providing time-sensitive services to the passing vehicles. Specifically, we exploit Bayesian Network to infer whether to trust the received traffic reports. We test the performance of QcFND with three platforms, i.e., Veins, Hyperledger Fabric, and Netica. Extensive simulations and experiments show that QcFND achieves good performance compared with other solutions.
