Synthesis, Characterization and Potential Antimicrobial Activity of Selenium Nanoparticles Stabilized with Cetyltrimethylammonium Chloride

Selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) have a number of unique properties that determine the use of the resulting nanomaterials in various fields. The focus of this paper is the stabilization of Se NPs with cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC). Se NPs were obtained by chemical reduction in an aqueous medium. The influence of the concentration of precursors and synthesis conditions on the size of Se NPs and the process of micelle formation was established. Transmission electron microscopy was used to study the morphology of Se NPs. The influence of the pH of the medium and the concentration of ions in the sol on the stability of Se micelles was studied. According to the results of this study, the concentration of positively charged ions has a greater effect on the particle size in the positive Se NPs sol than in the negative Se NPs sol. The potential antibacterial and fungicidal properties of the samples were studied on Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus and Mucor. Concentrations of Se NPs stabilized with CTAC with potential bactericidal and fungicidal effects were discovered. Considering the revealed potential antimicrobial activity, the synthesized Se NPs-CTAC molecular complex can be further studied and applied in the development of veterinary drugs, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

Fungicidal spectrum and biological properties of a new fungicide, pyriofenone

Pyriofenone is a new fungicide developed by Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha, Ltd. To determine the fungicidal spectrum of pyriofenone, in vivo pot tests and in vitro mycelial growth-inhibition tests were conducted. Pyriofenone showed excellent activity against wheat and cucumber powdery mildew and moderate efficacy against rice blast in the pot tests. In the mycelial growth-inhibition tests, most fungi were not affected by pyriofenone except for Botrytis cinerea, Helminthosporium sacchari, Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides, Pyricularia oryzae, Rosellinia necatrix, and Verticillium dahliae. The fungicidal properties of pyriofenone on powdery mildew in cucumber and wheat were evaluated precisely. Pyriofenone exhibited excellent preventive and residual activities. It had high rainfastness in the cucumber leaves against powdery mildew. Pyriofenone also showed inhibitory activity on lesion development upon application until 2 days after inoculation, and the lesion expansion and sporulation of the cucumber powdery mildew fungus were effectively controlled. Furthermore, pyriofenone showed translaminar and vapor activities.

Synthesis, Structure and Biological Activity of Indole-Imidazole Complexes with ZnCl2: Can Coordination Enhance the Functionality of Bioactive Ligands?

The ability of the indole-imidazole hybrid ligands to coordinate with the Zn(II) ion and the resulting structures of this new class of coordination compounds were analyzed in order to determine their structural properties and biological functionalities. For this purpose, six novel Zn(II) complexes, [Zn(InIm)₂Cl₂] (1), [Zn(InMeIm)₂Cl₂] (2), [Zn(IniPrIm)₂Cl₂] (3), [Zn(InEtMeIm)₂Cl₂] (4), [Zn(InPhIm)₂Cl₂] (5) and [Zn₂(InBzIm)₂Cl₂] (6) (where InIm is 3-((1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-1H-indole), were synthesized by the reactions of ZnCl₂ and the corresponding ligand in a 1:2 molar ratio in methanol solvent at an ambient temperature. The structural and spectral characterization of these complexes was performed using NMR, FT-IR and ESI-MS spectrometry and elemental analysis, and the crystal structures of 1-5 were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1-5 form polar supramolecular aggregates by utilizing, for this purpose, the N-H(indole)∙∙∙Cl(chloride) intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The assemblies thus formed differ depending on the distinctive molecular shape, which can be either compact or extended. All complexes were screened for their hemolytic, cytoprotective, antifungal, and antibacterial activities. The results show that the cytoprotective activity of the indole/imidazole ligand significantly increases upon its complexation with ZnCl₂ up to a value comparable with the standard antioxidant Trolox, while the response of its substituted analogues is diverse and less pronounced.

Indole Derivatives Bearing Imidazole, Benzothiazole-2-Thione or Benzoxazole-2-Thione Moieties-Synthesis, Structure and Evaluation of Their Cytoprotective, Antioxidant, Antibacterial and Fungicidal Activities

In the search for new bioactive compounds, a methodology based on combining two molecules with biological properties into a new hybrid molecule was used to design and synthesize of a series of ten indole derivatives bearing imidazole, benzothiazole-2-thione, or benzoxazole-2-thione moieties at the C-3 position. The compounds were spectroscopically characterized and tested for their antioxidant, antibacterial, and fungicidal activities. The crystal structures were determined for five of them. Comparison of the closely related structures containing either benzothiazole-2-thione or benzoxazole-2-thione clearly shows that the replacement of -S- and -O- ring atoms modify molecular conformation in the crystal, changes intermolecular interactions, and has a severe impact on biological activity. The results indicate that indole-imidazole derivatives with alkyl substituent exhibit an excellent cytoprotective effect against AAPH-induced oxidative hemolysis and act as effective ferrous ion chelating agents. The indole-imidazole compound with chlorine atoms inhibited the growth of fungal strains: Coriolus versicolor (Cv), Poria placenta (Pp), Coniophora puteana (Cp), and Gloeophyllum trabeum (Gt). The indole-imidazole derivatives showed the highest antibacterial activity, for which the largest growth-inhibition zones were noted in M. luteus and P. fluorescens cultures. The obtained results may be helpful in the development of selective indole derivatives as effective antioxidants and/or antimicrobial agents.

The Antifungal Properties of Tamarix aphylla Extract against Some Plant Pathogenic Fungi

Tamarix aphylla is a Saudi herb, which possesses antimicrobial properties and potentially introduces a solution to the subsequent dilemma caused by agrochemicals and antifungal misuse. The current study aimed to assess the fungicidal properties of water and ethanolic extracts of T. aphylla leaves against Macrophomina phaseolina, Curvularia spicifera, and Fusarium spp. The chemical composition of T. aphylla was evaluated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry technique (GC−MS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The antifungal assay assessed the fungal growth inhibition using the poisoned food technique. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) were used to evaluate the structural changes induced in the fungal species post-treatment by T. aphylla. FTIR and GC−MS analysis revealed that T. aphylla extracts were rich in aromatic and volatile compounds, such as Benzeneselenol, Gibberellic acid, and Triaziquone, which proved multiple antifungal properties. The results showed significant inhibition in the growth of all species (p < 0.05) except for F. moniliforme, where the water extract induced the highest mycelial growth inhibition at the dose of 30%. The highest inhibition was for M. phaseolina treated with the water extract (36.25 ± 1.06 mm, p < 0.001) and C. spicifera, treated with the ethanolic extract (27.25 ± 1.77 mm, p < 0.05), as compared to the untreated control and the positive control of Ridomol. SEM and TEM revealed some ultrastructural changes within the fungal growth of treated M. phaseolina, which included the thickening and mild rupture of mycelia. Those findings suggested the robust antifungal properties of T. aphylla against some filamentous fungi. The phenolic composition illustrated the potential fungicidal properties of T. aphylla. Additional studies are required to focus on more antimicrobial properties of T. aphylla against other species, particularly those that might benefit the medical field.

Crystal structure of cyproconazole

The title compound [systematic name: 2-(4-chloro-phen-yl)-3-cyclo-propyl-1-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butan-2-ol], C15H18ClN3O, is a conazole fungicide. The asymmetric unit comprises two enanti-omeric pairs (mol-ecules A and B) in which the dihedral angles between the chloro-phenyl and triazole rings are 46.54 (9) (mol-ecule A) and 67.03 (8)° (mol-ecule B). In the crystal, C-H⋯O, O-H⋯N and C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds and weak C-H⋯π inter-actions [3.473 (2) Å] link adjacent mol-ecules, forming columns along the a axis.
