Abstract
ISSUE ADDRESSED Male partners are key supports for women in birth preparation and postnatally. Text-messaging can deliver timely information to expectant and new fathers to increase their support of the mother. However, technological innovations in healthcare often fail to be adopted. This study aims to assess the impact of disseminating a 'taster' set of SMS messages to increase clinicians' engagement with the intervention. METHODS Example messages from SMS4dads were delivered to clinicians over a 3-week period and a link provided to an evaluation survey. Agreement to two closed questions was rated on a five-point Likert scale; the frequency of specific recalled messages was calculated for the first open-ended question. Responses to the remaining open-ended questions were analysed with a descriptive thematic approach. RESULTS A total of 418 participants (female 61.5%) working in health organisations (80.4%), mostly in nursing (33.9%) or midwifery (19.6%) enrolled. Of the 77 (18.4%) participants who provided an evaluation, 96% agreed or strongly agreed that the Professional Taster gave them a better understanding of how to explain the program, and 88% agreed or strongly agreed that they are now more likely to tell parents about the program. Analysis of the remaining two open-ended questions revealed clinicians' concerns for fathers alongside their primary focus on maternal wellbeing. CONCLUSION Providing 'how to' knowledge through receiving a sample of the intervention may increase clinicians' acceptance of technological innovation. SO WHAT?: Health-promoting digital interventions using text are increasing. Novel tested strategies for gaining buy-in from healthcare staff will be needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES to map the production of technologies aimed at monitoring falls in a hospital environment protected by registered patents. METHODS a technological prospecting of international patents, with a quantitative approach, with search carried out between February and March 2022 in the Derwent Innovations Index database with descriptors fall, hospital, monitoring. RESULTS 212 patents were found, with the majority filed and published since 2010, by Tran B (9) and Cerner Innovation Inc (9), focused on health technology. Universities were responsible for 13% of deposits. There was a predominance of records from the United States (43.4%), China (21.7%) and Japan (12.3%), in addition to technological strategies classified as devices for the environment (80.7%) and for preventing falls (66.5%) as well as trend towards resources with multiple functionalities in the same technology. CONCLUSIONS the plurality of functions in the same device reflects the search for optimizing resources and the concern with comprehensive care.

Abstract
This article contributes to Science and Technology Studies (STS) literatures on 'making and doing' by describing and analysing the practice of researching, reconstructing, and reimagining archival clothing patent data. It combines feminist speculation and reconstruction practices into what I term 'speculative sewing'. This involves stitching data, theory and fabric into inventions described in patents and analysing them as three-dimensional arguments. In the case here, of 1890s British women's convertible cycle wear, I examine how inventors used new forms of clothing to challenge socio-political restrictions on women's bodies in public space and help them make alternate claims to rights and entitlements. I argue that translating text and images into wearable data renders lesser-known technoscience stories visible and (more) knowable and transforms clothing (back) into material matters of public concern.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The standard bag-valve mask (BVM) used universally requires that a single healthcare practitioner affix the mask to the face with 1 hand while compressing a self-inflating bag with the second hand. Studies have demonstrated that creating a 2-handed seal (with 2 healthcare practitioners) is superior. Our study aims to assess the efficacy of a novel single-practitioner BVM device that uses a foot pedal as the bag compressor, allowing both hands to be available for the seal to facilitate delivery of appropriate tidal volumes during single-practitioner resuscitation. METHODS This was a prospective, randomized, cross-over study. Participants with various BVM ventilation experience performed 2 minutes of metronome-guided BVM ventilation using a standard BVM and the pedal-operated compressor on a high-fidelity simulation mannequin. Analysis examining differences in mean tidal volume delivered was conducted using a regression model that adjusted for covariates. A secondary analysis using a series of Wilcoxon tests was conducted to compare differences in the additional out-of-range sensed breaths metrics to compare differences by prior BVM ventilation experience. RESULTS A total of 58 subjects participated. The pedal-operated compressor unadjusted mean tidal volume delivered was 446.5 mL (95% confidence interval [CI], 425.9-467.1) compared with 340.6 mL (95% CI, 312.2-369.0) by standard BVM (mean change, 105.9 mL [95% CI, 71.2-140.6]; P < .001). When modeling a generalized estimation equation regression model, standard BVM ventilation provided a mean difference of 105.9 mL less than pedal-operated compressor ventilation after adjusting for covariates (P = 0.01). For the secondary outcome, the pedal-operated compressor did have a significantly lower median number of out-of-range breaths (median, 3; interquartile range [IQR], 1-11.5) compared with the standard device (median, 13.5; IQR, 6-19; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Use of a novel pedal-operated compressor may allow a single healthcare practitioner, regardless of prior experience, to deliver consistent, appropriate tidal volumes with more ease compared with the standard BVM during manual respiratory resuscitation.

Abstract
The majority of lung cancers are non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) having a low survival rate. Recent studies have indicated the involvement of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) oncogene mutations like EGFR exon 20 insertions (EGFRex20ins) mutation among NSCLC patients. The response of patients of NSCLC with the EGFRex20ins mutation to the currently available EGFR inhibitor is negligible. Mobocertinib is the first oral treatment that has been approved by the USFDA, on 15 September 2021, to treat NSCLC with the EGFRex20ins mutation. This patent review discusses the inventions and patent literature of mobocertinib that will help the scientific community to develop additional and improved inventions related to mobocertinib. The structure of mobocertinib was first reported in 2015. Therefore, this article covered the patents/patent applications related to mobocertinib from 2015 to 25 October 2021. The patent search revealed 27 patents/patent applications related to compound, method of treatment, salt, polymorph, process, composition, and drug combinations of mobocertinib. The authors foresee an exciting prospect for developing a treatment for NSCLC with EGFRex20ins mutation, and other cancers employing a combination of mobocertinib with other approved anticancer agents. The inventions related to novel dosage forms, processes, and intermediates used in the synthesis of mobocertinib are also anticipated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Controversy exists regarding surveillance of arteriovenous fistulas for hemodialysis to increase patency. A significant reduction in volume flow rate (VFR) should lead to diagnostic evaluation and eventually intervention. Several methods are available for VFR measurements, but all of them are associated with low reproducibility. VFR trend analysis is suggested as an improved solution. It is therefore a need to find user-friendly, cost and time-effective modalities. We present a novel Doppler ultrasound device (earlybird) which could bridge this gap. It includes an easy-to-use and light-weight single element transducer. METHODS In an experimental and clinical setting, we compared earlybird to duplex ultrasound to assess VFR. In a closed circuit of blood-mimicking fluid, 36 paired calculations of calibrated, duplex ultrasound and earlybird VFR was measured. In addition, 23 paired recordings of duplex ultrasound and earlybird VFR was measured in 16 patients with underarm arteriovenous fistulas. Pearson correlation, intraclass correlation coefficient, root-mean-square and Bland-Altman plots were analyzed. RESULTS Strong correlation (r = 0.991, p < 0.001), and excellent level of agreement (ICC = 0.970 (95% CI 0.932 - 0.985), p < 0.001) between earlybird and the calibrated VFR was found in the experimental setup. This was confirmed in the clinical setting, with a strong correlation (r = 0.781, p < 0.001) and moderate to good level of agreement (ICC = 0.750 (95% CI 0.502-0.885), p < 0.001) between earlybird and duplex ultrasound VFR measured at the arteriovenous fistulas outflow veins. In the Bland-Altman plot-analysis for the experimental setup, we found smaller limits of agreement, a smaller consistent and proportional bias, as well as greater accuracy of earlybird than DUS when compared to the calibrated VFR. CONCLUSION Earlybird is a feasible tool for VFR measurements and could be a future promising device for easy assessment and surveillance of AVF for hemodialysis.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer surgery continues to be associated with a high operative morbidity rate, poor long-term survival outcomes, and various challenges in obtaining high-level evidence. Not only is the early postoperative morbidity rate high, but also late morbidity involves lifelong nutritional support for long-term survivors. Due to poor survival outcomes even after curative surgery, pancreatic surgeons have doubts about the role of surgery as the definitive treatment for pancreatic cancer. Additionally, conducting clinical trials to obtain high-level evidence in the field of pancreatic surgery is difficult, and the results have only had a moderate impact on clinical practice due to skepticism regarding their quality. Therefore, quality evidence regarding the extent of resection, mode of approach to dissection, reconstruction methods for pancreatico-enteric anastomosis, determination of resectability, timing of surgery, and the definition of the resection margin is lacking. However, numerous innovative pancreatic surgical procedures have been developed, which may aptly have been called "art" when they were first introduced, regardless of whether they subsequently were supported by scientific evidence. In this review, we provide recent examples of the integration of art and science in the field of pancreatic surgery, which illustrate how the creative ideas of pancreatic surgeons evolved into generally accepted clinical practice. Pancreatic surgeons should be considered "surgical artists," "surgical scientists," and "surgical practitioners." We look forward to more "surgical artists" educating future "surgical artists and scientists" to create a richer "spirit of innovation," leading to a more beautiful integration of art and science in the field of pancreatic surgery.

Abstract
The global orthopedic devices market is expected to reach nearly $72 billion by 2026, representing 12% of the projected global medical devices market. The vantage point of surgeons conveniently places them at the crossroads of surgery, therapy, and inpatient and outpatient dynamics, providing fertile ground for the invention of medical devices. This review article aims to provide an overview for how surgeons should take on launching a product in the medical device industry. In Part 1, we cover idea development, industry partnerships, and commercialization. Part 2 will cover the patent and United States Food and Drug Administration submission processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The status of the data-driven management of cancer care as well as the challenges, opportunities, and recommendations aimed at accelerating the rate of progress in this field are topics of great interest. Two international workshops, one conducted in June 2019 in Cordoba, Spain, and one in October 2019 in Athens, Greece, were organized by four Horizon 2020 (H2020) European Union (EU)-funded projects: BOUNCE, CATCH ITN, DESIREE, and MyPal. The issues covered included patient engagement, knowledge and data-driven decision support systems, patient journey, rehabilitation, personalized diagnosis, trust, assessment of guidelines, and interoperability of information and communication technology (ICT) platforms. A series of recommendations was provided as the complex landscape of data-driven technical innovation in cancer care was portrayed. OBJECTIVE This study aims to provide information on the current state of the art of technology and data-driven innovations for the management of cancer care through the work of four EU H2020-funded projects. METHODS Two international workshops on ICT in the management of cancer care were held, and several topics were identified through discussion among the participants. A focus group was formulated after the second workshop, in which the status of technological and data-driven cancer management as well as the challenges, opportunities, and recommendations in this area were collected and analyzed. RESULTS Technical and data-driven innovations provide promising tools for the management of cancer care. However, several challenges must be successfully addressed, such as patient engagement, interoperability of ICT-based systems, knowledge management, and trust. This paper analyzes these challenges, which can be opportunities for further research and practical implementation and can provide practical recommendations for future work. CONCLUSIONS Technology and data-driven innovations are becoming an integral part of cancer care management. In this process, specific challenges need to be addressed, such as increasing trust and engaging the whole stakeholder ecosystem, to fully benefit from these innovations.

Abstract
Background Healthcare systems revolve around intricate relations between humans and technology. System efficiency depends on information exchange that occur on synchronous and asynchronous platforms. Traditional synchronous methods of communication may pose risks to workflow integrity and contribute to inefficient service delivery and medical care. Aim To compare synchronous methods of communication to Medic Bleep, an instant messaging asynchronous platform, and observe its impact on clinical workflow, quality of work life and associations with patient safety outcomes and hospital core operations. Methods Cohorts of healthcare professionals were followed using the Time Motion Study methodology over a 2-week period, using both the asynchronous platform and the synchronous methods like the non-cardiac pager. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted to identify staff attitudes towards both platforms. Results A statistically significant figure (p<0.01) of 20.1 minutes’ reduction in average task completion was seen with asynchronous communication, saving 58.8% of time when compared with traditional synchronous methods. In subcategory analysis for staff: doctors, nurses and midwifery categories, a p value of <0.0495 and <0.01 were observed; a mean time reduction with statistical significance was also seen in specific task efficiencies of ‘To-Take-Out (TTO), patient review, discharge & patient transfer and escalation of care & procedure’. The platform was favoured with an average Likert value of 8.7; 67% found it easy to implement. Conclusion The asynchronous platform improved clinical communication compared with synchronous methods, contributing to efficiencies in workflow and may positively affect patient care.

Abstract
Central line associated blood stream infections and complications in children require prevention strategies related to both traditional childhood activities as well as adverse events in the intensive care unit or bone marrow transplant unit. This study evaluated a nurse-invented product, the Line Snuggler, designed to protect intravenous tubing and central lines from contamination or entanglement. Patients (n = 30) were enrolled following the chemotherapy phase of transplant. Using a pre-post intervention design, each subject served as their own control for the control phase of the study (Days 1-3 without a Line Snuggler) and the intervention phase (Days 4-6 with a Line Snuggler), with bacterial levels of product and sheets tested on Days 1, 3, 4, and 6. At study conclusion, staff (n = 44) and parents/guardians (n = 25) completed an online survey assessing satisfaction with the product, and perceived utilization and safety. Using t tests, the Line Snuggler bacterial levels showed no difference in growth in adenosine triphosphate levels compared with the same patient's sheets, thereby supporting no increased risk of bacterial growth. Both staff and parents/guardians reported high satisfaction with their use of the Line Snuggler and noted the benefit of its protecting and bundling intravenous lines into a single organizer. This innovative product designed by nurses was evaluated as a means to provide exceptional, high-quality care to achieve the best outcomes while eliminating hospital-acquired complications (https://www.linesnugglers.com/).

Abstract
PURPOSE To enable power wheelchair users with limited mobility to safely and independently charge their wheelchairs. METHODS Stakeholders of multiple roles - including potential users, their caregivers, and clinicians with specifically relevant expertise - were engaged in a user-centred design process. Initial informal interviews, focus groups, online surveys, prototype demonstrations, semi-structured interviews, and expert reviews were utilized to guide development and iteratively evaluate prototypes. RESULTS The resulting wireless charging system enables independent charging while also significantly increasing capacity and charging speed. Autonomous positioning and remote control features further address the particular use cases of the target population, and vital features of existing power wheelchairs are retained according to stakeholder input. Pertinent topics emerging from stakeholder input are discussed. CONCLUSIONS Careful application of user-centred design principles is essential to the successful development of usable assistive technology devices, particularly for target populations with complex disabilities. The diverse perspectives of all relevant stakeholders must be considered and synthesized to produce a practical and usable solution.Implications for rehabilitationBattery charge is a constant and critical concern for power wheelchair users.Many power wheelchair users cannot independently use and monitor existing chargers.A wireless wheelchair charging system was developed to alleviate this issue.Sustained user engagement is crucial in the effective development of such assistive technology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this proof-of-concept study we aim to validate a novel ultrasound Doppler monitoring device for evaluating microcirculation (earlybird) against LDF and pulsed Doppler. METHODS In ten healthy subjects, we measured microcirculatory function at rest and during different autonomic tests (forced respiration, isometric exercise, Valsalva maneuver and cold pressor). Earlybird, LDF and pulsed Doppler were recorded simultaneously. We performed a ZNCC to determine correlation. RESULTS The curves for earlybird and LDF or pulsed Doppler correlates visually well. Overall median ZNCC 0.87 (interquartile range 0.77 -0.91) between the LDF and earlybird measurements, and 0.90 (0.82 - 0.95) for pulsed Doppler and earlybird. Median ZNCC for baseline and each provocation test for earlybird against LDF and pulsed Doppler were calculated; baseline: LDF 0.87 (0.73 - 0.97) pulsed Doppler 0.91 (0.81 - 0.94), forced respiration: LDF 0.87 (0.28 - 0.90) pulsed Doppler 0.90 (0.85 - 0.96), isometric exercise: LDF 0.82 (0.59 - 0.90) pulsed Doppler 0.87 (0.68 - 0.94), Valsalva maneuver: LDF 0.88 (0.82 - 0.91) pulsed Doppler 0.94 (0.92 - 0.97) and cold pressor: LDF 0.90 (0.85 - 0.95) pulsed Doppler 0.89 (0.65 - 0.94). CONCLUSION Earlybird records vasoconstrictions in healthy subjects as well as LDF and pulsed Doppler.

Abstract
This article examines the shifts in the material ordering of inventions in patent law organization and their effects on the meaning and scope of inventions as intellectual property. Formats and media are constitutive of the establishment and stabilization of inventions as objects of intellectual property. Modern patent law's materiality had been dominated by paper documents but ever more consists of digital images, files, and networked data. The article traces and analyzes such effects of digital media on the meaning of intellectual/intangible property and argues that inventions increasingly matter as digital data in the legal realm.

Abstract
In-hospital fall incidence is a critical indicator of healthcare outcome. Predictive models for fall incidents could facilitate optimal resource planning and allocation for healthcare providers. In this paper, we proposed a tensor factorisation-based framework to capture the latent features for fall incidents prediction over time. Experiments with real-world data from local hospitals in Hong Kong demonstrated that the proposed method could predict the fall incidents reasonably well (with an area under the curve score around 0.9). As compared with the baseline time series models, the proposed tensor based models were able to successfully identify high-risk locations without records of fall incidents during the past few months.

Abstract
Recent European policy highlights the need to promote local fishery and aquaculture by means of innovation and joint participation in fishery management as one of the keys to achieve the sustainability of our seas. However, the implicit assumptions held by the actors in the two main groups involved - innovators (scientists, businessmen and administration managers) and local fishermen - can complicate, perhaps even render impossible, mutual understanding and co-operation. A qualitative analysis of interviews with members of both groups in the Valencian Community (Spain) reveals those latent assumptions and their impact on the respective practices. The analysis shows that the innovation narrative in which one group is based and the inventions narrative used by the other one are rooted in two dramatically different, or even antagonistic, collective worldviews. Any environmental policy that implies these groups should take into account these strong discords.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with complex health care needs require the expertise of many health care providers. Communication, collaboration, and patient-centered care positively impact care quality and patient outcomes. Few technologies exist that facilitate collaboration between providers across settings of care and also engage the patient. We developed a Web-based clinical collaboration system, Loop, to address this gap. The likelihood of a technological system's uptake is associated with its perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. We engaged stakeholders in the conceptualization and development of Loop in an effort to maximize its intuitiveness and utility. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to report end users' perceptions about the ease of use and usefulness of Loop captured during usability tests of Loop. METHODS Participants represented three user types (patients, caregivers, and health care providers) recruited from three populations (adults with cancer, adolescents and young adults with cancer, and children with medical complexity). We conducted usability testing over three iterative cycles of testing and development in both laboratory-based and off-site environments. We performed a content analysis of usability testing transcripts to summarize and describe participant perceptions about the ease of use and usefulness of Loop. RESULTS Participants enjoyed testing Loop and were able to use the core functions-composing, posting, and reading messages-with little difficulty. They had difficulty interpreting certain visual cues and design elements or the purpose of some features. This difficulty negatively impacted perceived ease of use but was primarily limited to auxiliary features. Participants predicted that Loop could improve the efficiency and effectiveness of communication between care team members; however, this perceived usefulness could be compromised by disruptions to personal workflow such as additional time or task requirements. CONCLUSIONS Loop was perceived to have value as a collaboration system; however, usability testing findings indicate that some design and functional elements need to be addressed to improve ease of use. Additionally, participant concerns highlight the need to consider how a system can be implemented so as to minimize impact on workflow and optimize usefulness.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Favourable pain relief results on evoking autonomous twitches at myofascial trigger points with Electrical Twitch Obtaining Intramuscular Stimulation (ETOIMS). AIM To document autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) from blood pressure (BP) and pulse/heart rate changes with ETOIMS. METHODS AND MATERIALS A patient with persistent pain regularly received serial ETOIMS sessions of 60, 90, 120 or ≥150 min over 24 months. Outcome measures include BP: systolic, diastolic, pulse pressure and pulse/heart rate, pre-session/immediate-post-session summed differences (SDPPP index), and pain reduction. His results were compared with that of two other patients and one normal control. Each individual represented the following maximal elicitable twitch forces (TWF) graded 1-5: maximum TWF2: control subject; maximum TWF3: CRPS patient with suspected ANS dysfunction; and maximum TWF4 and TWF5: two patients with respective slow-fatigue and fast-fatigue twitches who during ETOIMS had autonomous twitching at local and remote myotomes simultaneously from denervation supersensitivity. ETOIMS results between TWFs were compared using one-way analysis of variance test. RESULTS The patients showed immediate significant pain reduction, BP and pulse/heart rate changes/reduction(s) except for diastolic BP in the TWF5 patient. TWF2 control subject had diastolic BP reduction with ETOIMS but not with rest. Linear regression showed TWF grade to be the most significant variable in pain reduction, more so than the number of treatments, session duration and treatment interval. TWF grade was the most important variable in significantly reducing outcome measures, especially pulse/heart rate. Unlike others, the TWF3 patient had distinctive reductions in SDPPP index. CONCLUSIONS Measuring BP and pulse/heart rate is clinically practical for alerting ANS dysfunction maintained CRPS. SDPPP index (≥26) and pulse/heart rate (≥8) reductions with almost every ETOIMS treatment, plus inability to evoke autonomous twitches due to pain-induced muscle hypertonicity, are pathognomonic of this problem.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The past decade has witnessed a highly dynamic and growing expansion of novel methods aimed at improving the assessment of Parkinson's disease with technology (NAM-PD) in laboratory, clinical, and home environments. However, the current state of NAM-PD regarding their maturity, feasibility, and usefulness in assessing the main PD features has not been systematically evaluated. METHODS A systematic review of articles published in the field from 2005 to 2015 was performed. Of 9,503 publications identified in PubMed and the Web of Science, 848 full papers were evaluated, and 588 original articles were assessed to evaluate the technological, demographic, clinimetric, and technology transfer readiness parameters of NAM-PD. RESULTS Of the studies, 65% included fewer than 30 patients, < 50% employed a standard methodology to validate diagnostic tests, 8% confirmed their results in a different dataset, and 87% occurred in a clinic or lab. The axial features domain was the most frequently studied, followed by bradykinesia. Rigidity and nonmotor domains were rarely investigated. Only 6% of the systems reached a technology level that justified the hope of being included in clinical assessments in a useful time period. CONCLUSIONS This systematic evaluation provides an overview of the current options for quantitative assessment of PD and what can be expected in the near future. There is a particular need for standardized and collaborative studies to confirm the results of preliminary initiatives, assess domains that are currently underinvestigated, and better validate the existing and upcoming NAM-PD. © 2016 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Abstract
The patent system appears to make three metaphysical assumptions often associated with scientific realism: there is a natural (i.e. external) world that is independent of human knowledge and technology; unobservable entities (such as some types of inventions) exist; and objects can have causal powers. Although a straightforward reading of patent laws implies these metaphysical commitments, it is not at all clear that what the patent system has to say about the world has any bearing on issues of scientific realism. While realists might embrace the patent system's apparent metaphysics as providing additional support for their view, anti-realists could propose an alternative interpretation of patent law that does not involve realist metaphysical commitments. Thus, questions about the patent system's metaphysics depend on whether one takes patent law at face value or defends an interpretation of patent law motivated by philosophical theory. Nevertheless, philosophers of science should pay attention to the practice of patenting, even if they ultimately reject the patent system's apparent metaphysics and offer an alternative interpretation.

Abstract
Medicine is developing through biomedical technology and innovations. The goal of any innovation in medicine is to improve patient care. Exponential growth in technology has led to the unprecedented growth of medical technology over the last 50 years. Clinician-scientists need to understand the complexity of the innovation process, from concept to product release, when working to bring new clinical solutions to the bedside. Hence, an overview of the innovation process is provided herein. The process involves an invention designed to solve an unmet need, followed by prototype design and optimization, animal studies, pilot and pivotal studies, and regulatory approval. The post-marketing strategy relative to funding, along with analysis of cost benefit, is a critical component for the adoption of new technologies. Examples of the road to innovation are provided, based on the experience with development of the transcatheter aortic valve. Finally, ideas are presented to contribute to the further development of this worldwide trend in innovation.

Abstract
Hyperthermia is an important approach for the treatment of several diseases. Hyperthermia is also thought to induce hypertrophy of skeletal muscles in vitro and in vivo, and has been used as a therapeutic tool for millennia. In the first part of our work, we revise several relevant patents related to the utilization of hyperthermia for the treatment and diagnostic of human diseases. In the second part, we present exciting new data on the effects of forced and natural overexpression of HSP72, using murine in vitro (muscle cells) and ex vivo (primary skeletal muscles) models. These studies help to demonstrate that hyperthermia effects are orchestrated by tight coupling between gene expression, protein function, and intracellular Ca2+ signaling pathways with a key role for calcium-induced calcium release. We hope that the review of current patents along with previous unknown information on molecular signaling pathways that underlie the hypertrophy response to hyperthermia in skeletal muscles may trigger the curiosity of scientists worldwide to explore new inventions that fully utilize hyperthermia for the treatment of muscle diseases.
