All-Solid-State Potentiometric Ion-Sensors Based on Tailored Imprinted Polymers for Pholcodine Determination

In recent times, the application of the use of ion-selective electrodes has expanded in the field of pharmaceutical analyses due to their distinction from other sensors in their high selectivity and low cost of measurement, in addition to their high measurement sensitivity. Cost-effective, reliable, and robust all-solid-state potentiometric selective electrodes were designed, characterized, and successfully used for pholcodine determination. The design of the sensor device was based on the use of a screen-printed electrode modified with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a solid-contact transducer. Tailored pholcodine (PHO) molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared, characterized, and used as sensory receptors in the presented potentiometric sensing devices. The sensors exhibited a sensitivity of 31.6 ± 0.5 mV/decade (n = 5, R² = 0.9980) over the linear range of 5.5 × 10⁻⁶ M with a detection limit of 2.5 × 10⁻⁷ M. Real serum samples in addition to pharmaceutical formulations containing PHO were analyzed, and the results were compared with those obtained by the conventional standard liquid chromatographic approach. The presented analytical device showed an outstanding efficiency for fast, direct, and low-cost assessment of pholcodine levels in different matrices.

Antidelaminating, Thermally Stable, and Cost-Effective Flexible Kapton Platforms for Nitrate Sensors, Mercury Aptasensors, Protein Sensors, and p-Type Organic Thin-Film Transistors

The inkjet printing of metal electrodes on polymer films is a desirable manufacturing process due to its simplicity but is limited by the lack of thermal stability and serious delaminating flaws in various aqueous and organic solutions. Kapton, adopted worldwide due to its superior thermal durability, allows the high-temperature sintering of nanoparticle-based metal inks. By carefully selecting inks (Ag and Au) and Kapton substrates (Kapton HN films with a thickness of 135 μm and a thermal resistance of up to 400 °C) with optimal printing parameters and simplified post-treatments (sintering), outstanding film integrity, thermal stability, and antidelaminating features were obtained in both aqueous and organic solutions without any pretreatment strategy (surface modification). These films were applied in four novel devices: a solid-state ion-selective (IS) nitrate (NO₃^-) sensor, a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA)-based mercury (Hg²⁺) aptasensor, a low-cost protein printed circuit board (PCB) sensor, and a long-lasting organic thin-film transistor (OTFT). The IS NO₃^- sensor displayed a linear sensitivity range between 10^-4.5 and 10^-1 M (r² = 0.9912), with a limit of detection of 2 ppm for NO₃^-. The Hg²⁺ sensor exhibited a linear correlation (r² = 0.8806) between the change in the transfer resistance (R_CT) and the increasing concentration of Hg²⁺. The protein PCB sensor provided a label-free method for protein detection. Finally, the OTFT demonstrated stable performance, with mobility values in the linear (μ_lin) and saturation (μ_sat) regimes of 0.0083 ± 0.0026 and 0.0237 ± 0.0079 cm² V^-1 S^-1, respectively, and a threshold voltage (V_th) of -6.75 ± 3.89 V.

Cost-Effective Potentiometric Platforms Modified with Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Based on Imprinted Receptors for Fluvoxamine Assessment

A simple, efficient and reliable analytical method was developed and used for the determination of the fluvoxamine drug (FLV) in pharmaceutical preparations and biological fluids. The method is based on the cost-effective screen-printed platform for the potential transduction of the drug. Host-tailored molecular imprinting polymer (MIP) was integrated with the potentiometric platform as a recognition receptor, in which FLV, acrylamide (AAm), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and acetonitrile were used as a template, functional monomer, cross-linker, and solvent, respectively. MIP particles were dispersed in plasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) and the membrane was drop-casted on carbon screen-printed electrode. The MIP, in addition to non-imprinted polymers (NIP), was characterized and the binding experiment revealed high affinity and adsorption capacity of MIP towards FLV. The proposed sensor displayed near-Nernstian cationic slope of 55.0 ± 0.8 mV/decade (r² = 0.999) with a low detection limit of 4.8 × 10⁻⁶ mol/L over a wide pH range (3.0–8.5). The electrochemical features of the proposed sensors including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and chronopotentiometry measurements (CP) in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a solid contact transducer were also investigated. The applications of the proposed sensor for the determination of FLV in different dosage forms with recovery values (98.8%–101.9%) and (97.4%–101.1%), respectively compared with the reference HPLC method with acceptedFandt-student tests values at the 95% confidence level.

Critical Evaluation of Laboratory Potentiometric Electronic Tongues for Pharmaceutical Analysis-An Overview

Electronic tongue systems equipped with cross-sensitive potentiometric sensors have been applied to pharmaceutical analysis, due to the possibility of various applications and developing new formulations. Many studies already proved the complementarity between the electronic tongue and classical analysis such as dissolution tests indicated by Pharmacopeias. However, as a new approach to study pharmaceuticals, electronic tongues lack strict testing protocols and specification limits; therefore, their results can be improperly interpreted and inconsistent with the reference studies. Therefore, all aspects of the development, measurement conditions, data analysis, and interpretation of electronic tongue results were discussed in this overview. The critical evaluation of the effectiveness and reliability of constructed devices may be helpful for a better understanding of electronic tongue systems development and for providing strict testing protocols.
