Optical Manipulation of Soft Matter

Optical manipulation has emerged as a pivotal tool in soft matter research, offering superior applicability, spatiotemporal precision, and manipulation capabilities compared to conventional methods. Here, an overview of the optical mechanisms governing the interaction between light and soft matter materials during manipulation is provided. The distinct characteristics exhibited by various soft matter materials, including liquid crystals, polymers, colloids, amphiphiles, thin liquid films, and biological soft materials are highlighted, and elucidate their fundamental response characteristics to optical manipulation techniques. This knowledge serves as a foundation for designing effective strategies for soft matter manipulation. Moreover, the diverse range of applications and future prospects that arise from the synergistic collaboration between optical manipulation and soft matter materials in emerging fields are explored.

Ultrasensitive Molecular Fingerprint Retrieval Using Strongly Detuned Overcoupled Plasmonic Nanoantennas

Tailoring light-matter interactions via plasmonic nanoantennas (PNAs) has emerged as a breakthrough technology for spectroscopic applications. The detuning between molecular vibrations and plasmonic resonances, as a fundamental and inevitable optical phenomenon in light-matter interactions, reduces the interaction efficiency, resulting in a weak molecule sensing signal at the strong detuning state. Here, it is demonstrated that the low interaction efficiency from detuning can be tackled by overcoupled PNAs (OC-PNAs) with a high ratio of the radiative to intrinsic loss rates, which can be used for ultrasensitive spectroscopy at strong plasmonic-molecular detuning. In OC-PNAs, the ultrasensitive molecule signals are achieved within a wavelength detuning range of 248 cm-1 , which is 173 cm-1 wider than previous works. Meanwhile, the OC-PNAs are immune to the distortion of molecular signals and maintain a lineshape consistent with the molecular signature fingerprint. This strategy allows a single device to enhance and capture the full and complex fingerprint vibrations in the mid-infrared range. In the proof-of-concept demonstration, 13 kinds of molecules with some vibration fingerprints strongly detuning by the OC-PNAs are identified with 100% accuracy with the assistance of machine-learning algorithms. This work gains new insights into detuning-state nanophotonics for potential applications including spectroscopy and sensors.

Circularly Polarized Light Responsive Materials: Design Strategies and Applications

Circularly polarized light (CPL) with the end of optical vector traveling along circumferential trajectory shows left- and right-handedness, which transmits chiral information to materials via complicated CPL-matter interactions. Materials with circular dichroism respond to CPL illumination selectively with differential outputs that can be used to design novel photodetectors. Racemic or achiral compounds under CPL go through photodestruction, photoresolution, and asymmetric synthesis pathways to generate enantiomeric bias and optical activity. By this strategy, helical polymers and chiral inorganic plasmonic nanostructures are synthesized directly, and their intramolecular folding and subsequent self-assembly are photomodulable as well. In the aggregated state of self-assembly and liquid crystal phase, helical sense of the dynamic molecular packing is sensitive to enantiomeric bias brought by CPL, enabling the chiral amplification to supramolecular scale. In this review, the application-guided design strategies of CPL-responsive materials are aimed to be systematically summarized and discussed. Asymmetric synthesis, resolution, and property-modulation of small organic compounds, polymers, inorganic nanoparticles, supramolecular assemblies and liquid crystals are highlighted based on the important developments during the last decades. Besides, applications of light-matter interactions including CPL detection and biomedical applications are also referred.

Plasmonic Refractive Index Sensor Enhanced with Chitosan/Au Bilayer Thin Film for Dopamine Detection

Surface plasmonic sensors have received considerable attention, found extensive applications, and outperformed conventional optical sensors. In this work, biopolymer chitosan (CS) was used to prepare the bilayer structure (CS/Au) of a plasmonic refractive index sensor for dopamine (DA) detection. The sensing characteristics of the developed plasmonic sensor were evaluated. Increasing DA concentrations significantly shifted the SPR dips. The sensor exhibited stability and a refractive index sensitivity of 8.850°/RIU in the linear range 0.1 nM to 1 µM with a detection limit of 0.007 nM and affinity constant of 1.383 × 10⁸ M^-1. The refractive index and thickness of the CS/Au structure were measured simultaneously by fitting the obtained experimental findings to theoretical data based on Fresnel equations. The fitting yielded the refractive index values n (1.5350 ± 0.0001) and k (0.0150 ± 0.0001) for the CS layer contacting 0.1 nM of DA, and the thickness, d was (15.00 ± 0.01) nm. Then, both n and d values increased by increasing DA concentrations. In addition, the changes in the FTIR spectrum and the variations in sensor surface roughness and structure obtained by AFM analysis confirmed DA adsorption on the sensing layer. Based on these observations, CS/Au bilayer has enhanced the performance of this plasmonic sensor, which showed promising importance as a simple, low-cost, and reliable platform for DA sensing.

Excitonic Insulator Enabled Ultrasensitive Terahertz Photodetection with Efficient Low-Energy Photon Harvesting

Despite the interest toward the terahertz (THz) rapidly increasing, the high-efficient detection of THz photon is not widely available due to the low photoelectric conversion efficiency at this low-energy photon regime. Excitonic insulator (EI) states in emerging materials with anomalous optical transitions and renormalized valence band dispersions render their nontrivial photoresponse, which offers the prospect of harnessing the novel EI properties for the THz detection. Here, an EI-based photodetector is developed for efficient photoelectric conversion in the THz band. High-quality EI material Ta₂ NiSe₅ is synthesized and the existence of the EI state at room temperature is confirmed. The THz scanning near-field optical microscopy experimentally reveals the strong light-matter interaction in the THz band of EI state in the Ta₂ NiSe₅ . Benefiting from the strong light-matter interaction, the Ta₂ NiSe₅ -based photodetectors exhibit superior THz detection performances with a detection sensitivity of ≈42 pW Hz^-1/2 and a response time of ≈1.1 µs at 0.1 THz at room temperature. This study provides a new avenue for realizing novel high-performance THz photodetectors by exploiting the emerging EI materials.

Optoelectronics of Atomic Metal-Semiconductor Interfaces in Tin-Intercalated MoS2

Metal-semiconductor interfaces are ubiquitous in modern electronics. These quantum-confined interfaces allow for the formation of atomically thin polarizable metals and feature rich optical and optoelectronic phenomena, including plasmon-induced hot-electron transfer from metal to semiconductors. Here, we report on the metal-semiconductor interface formed during the intercalation of zero-valent atomic layers of tin (Sn) between layers of MoS₂, a van der Waals layered material. We demonstrate that Sn interaction leads to the emergence of gap states within the MoS₂ band gap and to corresponding plasmonic features between 1 and 2 eV (0.6-1.2 μm). The observed stimulation of the photoconductivity, as well as the extension of the spectral response from the visible regime toward the mid-infrared suggests that hot-carrier generation and internal photoemission take place.

Direct Excitation of Triplet State of Molecule by Enhanced Magnetic Field of Dielectric Metasurfaces

Efficient excitation of a triplet (T₁ ) state of a molecule has far-reaching effects on photochemical reaction and energy conversion systems. Because the optical transition from a ground singlet (S₀ ) to a T₁ state is spin-forbidden, a T₁ state is generated via intersystem crossing (ISC) from an excited singlet (S₁ ) state. Although the excitation efficiency of a T₁ state can be increased by enhancing ISC utilizing a heavy atom effect, energy loss during S₁ →T₁ relaxation is inevitable. Here, a general approach to directly excite a T₁ state from a ground S₀ state via magnetic dipole transition, which is boosted by enhanced magnetic field induced by a dielectric metasurface, is proposed. As a dielectric metasurface, a hexagonal array of silicon (Si) nanodisks is employed; the nanodisk array induces a strongly enhanced magnetic field on the surface due to the toroidal dipole (TD) resonance. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed using ruthenium (Ru) complexes placed on a metasurface and demonstrates that the phosphorescence is 35-fold enhanced on a metasurface when the TD resonance is tuned to the wavelength of the direct S₀ →T₁ transition. These results indicate that photon energy necessary to excite the T₁ state can be reduced by more than 400 meV compared to the process involving the ISC. By combining optical measurements with numerical simulations, the mechanism of the phosphorescence enhancement is quantitatively discussed.

Conformal Self-Assembly of Nanospheres for Light-Enhanced Airtightness Monitoring and Room-Temperature Gas Sensing

The fabrication of conformal nanostructures on microarchitectures is of great significance for diverse applications. Here a facile and universal method was developed for conformal self-assembly of nanospheres on various substrates including convex bumps and concave holes. Hydrophobic microarchitectures could be transferred into superhydrophilic ones using plasma treatment due to the formation of numerous hydroxyl groups. Because of superhydrophilicity, the nanosphere suspension spread on the microarchitectures quickly and conformal self-assembly of nanospheres can be realized. Besides, the feature size of the conformal nanospheres on the substrates could be further regulated by plasma treatment. After transferring two-dimensional tungsten disulfide sheets onto the conformal nanospheres, the periodic nanosphere array was demonstrated to be able to enhance the light harvesting of WS2. Based on this, a light-enhanced room-temperature gas sensor with a fast recovery speed (<35 s) and low detecting limit (500 ppb) was achieved. Moreover, the WS2-covered nanospheres on the microarchitectures were very sensitive to the changes in air pressure due to the formation of suspended sheets on the convex bumps and concave holes. A sensitive photoelectronic pressure sensor that was capable of detecting the airtightness of vacuum devices was developed using the WS2-decorated hierarchical architectures. This work provides a simple method for the fabrication of conformal nanospheres on arbitrary substrates, which is promising for three-dimensional microfabrication of multifunctional hierarchical microarchitectures for diverse applications, such as biomimetic compound eyes, smart wetting surfaces and photonic crystals.

Circularly Polarized Laser with Chiral Nematic Cellulose Nanocrystal Cavity

Circularly polarized (CP) lasers derived from low-cost and renewable raw sources are attracting increasing attention in photonics and material science. Here, we present a facile and effective approach to fabricate CP lasers by the evaporation-induced assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and a laser dye. The obtained laser exhibits a controlled chiral nematic structure, which acts as a chiral optical cavity, and varied chiral coupling interactions. It is shown that the CNC-based laser can modify the polarization state of the laser into left-handed polarization, leading to strong CP laser emission (CPLE) with a dissymmetry factor up to 0.35. The chiral nematic CNC structure proves to be a versatile yet straightforward strategy to generate strong and tailored CPLE.

Highly Enhanced Light-Matter Interaction in MXene Quantum Dots-Monolayer WS2 Heterostructure

Since the Ti₃ C₂ was discovered in 2011, the family of MXenes has attracted much attention. MXenes offer great potential in the tuning of many fundamental properties by the synthesis of new structures. The synthesis methods of MXene mainly require steps including immersing a MAX phase in hydrofluoric acid (HF) and processing at high temperatures. However, the HF may be hard to acquire in many countries and processing at high temperatures may cause risk issues. In this article, a simple and cost-effective synthesis of Ti₃ C₂ T_x quantum dots (QDs) via chemical solution method that follows the long-time magnetic stirring process-initiated etching of Al atoms from commercial Ti₃ AlC₂ powder at room temperature is introduced. With WS₂ monolayer sitting over the MXenes QD arrays, a higher level of photoluminescence (PL) enhancement is found in the heterostructure with increasing laser power at room temperature and a few novel quasi-particles species in the heterostructure at -190 °C. The observations show that the possible plasmonic behavior initiated by QD arrays and the suspension state of WS₂ may coplay the roles to trigger multiple quasi-particles species. This study can be an important benchmark for the extensive understanding of quasi-particles species, and their dynamics.

Intense terahertz radiation: generation and application

Strong terahertz (THz) radiation provides a powerful tool to manipulate and control complex condensed matter systems. This review provides an overview of progress in the generation, detection, and applications of intense THz radiation. The tabletop intense THz sources based on Ti:sapphire laser are reviewed, including photoconductive antennas (PCAs), optical rectification sources, plasma-based THz sources, and some novel techniques for THz generations, such as topological insulators, spintronic materials, and metasurfaces. The coherent THz detection methods are summarized, and their limitations for intense THz detection are analyzed. Applications of intense THz radiation are introduced, including applications in spectroscopy detection, nonlinear effects, and switching of coherent magnons. The review is concluded with a short perspective on the generation and applications of intense THz radiation.

Plasmon-Enhanced Near-Field Chirality in Twisted van der Waals Heterostructures

It is shown that chiral plasmons, characterized by a longitudinal magnetic moment accompanying the longitudinal charge plasmon, lead to electromagnetic near-fields that are also chiral. For twisted bilayer graphene, we estimate that the near-field chirality of screened plasmons can be several orders of magnitude larger than that of the related circularly polarized light. The chirality also manifests itself in a deflection angle that is formed between the direction of the plasmon propagation and its Poynting vector. Twisted van der Waals heterostructures might thus provide a novel platform to promote enantiomer-selective physio-chemical processes in chiral molecules without the application of a magnetic field or external nanopatterning that break time-reversal, mirror plane, or inversion symmetry, respectively.

Simultaneous Surface-Enhanced Resonant Raman and Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Monolayer MoSe2: Determination of Ultrafast Decay Rates in Nanometer Dimension

The fact that metallic nanostructures are an excellent light receiver and transmitter connects the underlying principles of two widely applied optical processes: surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF). A comparative study of SERS and SEF can eliminate the typical unknown quantities of the system and reveal important parameters that cannot be accessed by conventional techniques. Here, we use this simultaneous SERS and SEF technique in a monolayer MoSe₂ coupled plasmonic nanocavity. After optimizing the spatial and the spectral overlaps between excitonic and plasmonic resonances, the SERS and SEF enhancement factors can exceed 10⁷ and 6000, respectively, at the same time on the same nanocube. The comparison of the SERS and SEF enhancements allows the estimation of the ultrafast total decay rate of the bright exciton in monolayer MoSe₂ in the nanocavity down to tens of femtoseconds, which is otherwise hard to realize using time-resolved techniques.

Wide Angle Dynamically Tunable Enhanced Infrared Absorption on Large-Area Nanopatterned Graphene

Enhancing light-matter interaction by exciting Dirac plasmons on nanopatterned monolayer graphene is an efficient route to achieve high infrared absorption. Here, we designed and fabricated hexagonal planar arrays of nanoholes and nanodisks with and without optical cavity to excite Dirac plasmons on patterned graphene and investigate the role of plasmon lifetime, extinction cross-section, incident light polarization, angle of incident light, and pattern dimensions on the light-absorption spectra. By incorporating a high-k Al₂O₃ layer as the gate dielectric for dynamic electrostatic tuning of the Fermi level, we demonstrate peak absorptions of 60% and 90% for the nanohole and nanodisk patterns, respectively, in the atmospheric transparent 8-12 μm infrared imaging band with high spectral tunability. Finally, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate angular dependence of both s- and p-polarized light absorption in monolayer graphene. Our results showcase the practical usability of low carrier mobility CVD-grown graphene for wide angle infrared absorption, which is suitable for next-generation optoelectronic devices such as photodetectors, optical switches, modulators, etc.

Deterministic Positioning of Colloidal Quantum Dots on Silicon Nitride Nanobeam Cavities

Engineering an array of precisely located cavity-coupled active media poses a major experimental challenge in the field of hybrid integrated photonics. We deterministically position solution-processed colloidal quantum dots (QDs) on high quality (Q)-factor silicon nitride nanobeam cavities and demonstrate light-matter coupling. By lithographically defining a window on top of an encapsulated cavity that is cladded in a polymer resist, and spin coating the QD solution, we can precisely control the placement of the QDs, which subsequently couple to the cavity. We show rudimentary control of the number of QDs coupled to the cavity by modifying the size of the window. Furthermore, we demonstrate Purcell enhancement and saturable photoluminescence in this QD-cavity platform. Finally, we deterministically position QDs on a photonic molecule and observe QD-coupled cavity supermodes. Our results pave the way for precisely controlling the number of QDs coupled to a cavity by engineering the window size, the QD dimension, and the solution chemistry and will allow advanced studies in cavity enhanced single photon emission, ultralow power nonlinear optics, and quantum many-body simulations with interacting photons.

Extreme Energy Density Confined Inside a Transparent Crystal: Status and Perspectives of Solid-Plasma-Solid Transformations

It was demonstrated during the past decade that an ultra-short intense laser pulse tightly-focused deep inside a transparent dielectric generates an energy density in excess of several MJ/cm3. Such an energy concentration with extremely high heating and fast quenching rates leads to unusual solid-plasma-solid transformation paths, overcoming kinetic barriers to the formation of previously unknown high-pressure material phases, which are preserved in the surrounding pristine crystal. These results were obtained with a pulse of a Gaussian shape in space and in time. Recently, it has been shown that the Bessel-shaped pulse could transform a much larger amount of material and allegedly create even higher energy density than what was achieved with the Gaussian beam (GB) pulses. Here, we present a succinct review of previous results and discuss the possible routes for achieving higher energy density employing the Bessel beam (BB) pulses and take advantage of their unique properties.

Transversely Divergent Second Harmonic Generation by Surface Plasmon Polaritons on Single Metallic Nanowires

Coherently adding up signal wave from different locations are a prerequisite for realizing efficient nonlinear optical processes in traditional optical configurations. While nonlinear optical processes in plasmonic waveguides with subwavelength light confinement are in principle desirable for enhancing nonlinear effects, so far it has been difficult to improve the efficiency due to the large momentum mismatch. Here we demonstrate, using remotely excited surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), axial collimated but transversely divergent second harmonic (SH) generation in a single silver nanowire-monolayer molybdenum disulfide hybrid system. Fourier imaging of the generated SH signal confirms the momentum conservation conditions between the incident and reflected SPPs and reveals distinct features inherent to the 1D plasmonic waveguides: (i) the SH photons are collimated perpendicular to the nanowire axis but are divergent within the perpendicular plane; (ii) the collimation (divergence) is inversely proportional to the length of the active region (lateral confinement of the SPPs); and (iii) the SH emission pattern resembles that of an aligned dipole chain on top of the substrate with an emission peak at the critical angle. Our results pave the way to generate and manipulate SH emission around subwavelength waveguides and open up new possibilities for realizing high efficiency on-chip nonlinear optics.

In-Plane Optical Anisotropy of Layered Gallium Telluride

Layered gallium telluride (GaTe) has attracted much attention recently, due to its extremely high photoresponsivity, short response time, and promising thermoelectric performance. Different from most commonly studied two-dimensional (2D) materials, GaTe has in-plane anisotropy and a low symmetry with the C2h(3) space group. Investigating the in-plane optical anisotropy, including the electron-photon and electron-phonon interactions of GaTe is essential in realizing its applications in optoelectronics and thermoelectrics. In this work, the anisotropic light-matter interactions in the low-symmetry material GaTe are studied using anisotropic optical extinction and Raman spectroscopies as probes. Our polarized optical extinction spectroscopy reveals the weak anisotropy in optical extinction spectra for visible light of multilayer GaTe. Polarized Raman spectroscopy proves to be sensitive to the crystalline orientation of GaTe, and shows the intricate dependences of Raman anisotropy on flake thickness, photon and phonon energies. Such intricate dependences can be explained by theoretical analyses employing first-principles calculations and group theory. These studies are a crucial step toward the applications of GaTe especially in optoelectronics and thermoelectrics, and provide a general methodology for the study of the anisotropy of light-matter interactions in 2D layered materials with in-plane anisotropy.

Visualizing Light Scattering in Silicon Waveguides with Black Phosphorus Photodetectors

A black phosphorus photodetector is utilized to investigate the light-scattering patterns of a silicon waveguide through wavelength- and polarization-dependent scanning photocurrent measurements. The photocurrent signals exhibit similar patterns to the light-intensity distribution of the waveguide calculated by finite-difference time-domain simulations, suggesting that photoexcited electron-hole pairs in the silicon waveguide can be injected into phosphorene to induce its photoresponse.

Liquid-Phase Vibrational Strong Coupling

Light-matter strong coupling involving ground-state molecular vibrations is investigated for the first time in the liquid phase for a set of molecules placed in microcavities. By tuning the cavities, one or more vibrational modes can be coupled in parallel or in series, inducing a change in the vibrational frequencies of the bonds. These findings are of fundamental importance to fully develop light-matter strong coupling for applications in molecular and material sciences.
