Strong Covalent Coupling in Vertically Layered SnSe2/PTAA Heterojunctions Enabled High Performance Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Photodetectors

Controllable large-scale integration of two-dimensional (2D) materials with organic semiconductors and the realization of strong coupling between them still remain challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a wafer-scale, vertically layered SnSe2/PTAA heterojunction array with high light-trapping ability via a low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy method and a facile spin-coating process. Conductive probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) measurements reveal strong rectification and photoresponse behavior in the individual SnSe2 nanosheet/PTAA heterojunction. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that vertically layered SnSe2/PTAA heterojunctions exhibit stronger C-Se covalent coupling than that of the conventional tiled type, which could facilitate more efficient charge transfer. Benefiting from these advantages, the SnSe2/PTAA heterojunction photodetectors with an optimized PTAA concentration show high performance, including a responsivity of 41.02 A/W, an external quantum efficiency of 1.31 × 104%, and high uniformity. The proposed approach for constructing large-scale 2D inorganic-organic heterostructures represents an effective route to fabricate high-performance broadband photodetectors for integrated optoelectronic systems.

A modified architecture of a perovskite solar cell with an enhanced optical absorption in the visible spectrum

The incomplete absorption of light in the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to the escape of photons and the waste of their energy in the visible spectrum hinders the efficiency of this type of solar cell. Utilizing light-trapping nanostructures and stimulating the device's plasmonic is an efficient way to increase absorption and reduce the energy losses. In this paper, a novel configuration of a nanostructured PSC with a plasmonic enhancement has been introduced to confine light in the active layer and boost energy harvesting. According to the conducted calculations, the modified configuration supports 23.4% higher short-circuit current density (J_SC) and 21% power conversion efficiency compared to the conventional PSC. In this study, the finite element method has been employed to perform numerical simulations of the examined structures. For modeling and characterizing solar cells, optical physics of the devices is used in conjunction with their electrical physics.

Efficient Broadband Light-Trapping Structures on Thin-Film Silicon Fabricated by Laser, Chemical and Hybrid Chemical/Laser Treatments

Light-trapping structures formed on surfaces of various materials have attracted much attention in recent years due to their important role in many applications of science and technology. This article discusses various methods for manufacturing light-trapping "black" silicon, namely laser, chemical and hybrid chemical/laser ones. In addition to the widely explored laser texturing and chemical etching methods, we develop a hybrid chemical/laser texturing method, consisting in laser post-texturing of pyramidal structures obtained after chemical etching. After laser treatments the surface morphology was represented by a chaotic relief of microcones, while after chemical treatment it acquired a chaotic pyramidal relief. Moreover, laser texturing of preliminarily chemically microtextured silicon wafers is shown to take five-fold less time compared to bare flat silicon. In this case, the chemically/laser-treated samples exhibit average total reflectance in the spectral range of 250-1100 nm lower by 7-10% than after the purely chemical treatment.

Polypyrrole-Dopamine Nanofiber Light-Trapping Coating for Efficient Solar Vapor Generation

Solar vapor generation (SVG) typically uses a solar absorbing material at the water-air interface to convert solar energy into heat for evaporation. However, the intrinsic solar absorption of the material determines the upper limit of the solar energy capture. By designing a light-trapping surface structure with open pores and channels, we can break this limit and further improve the absorption by enabling multiple reflections within the surface. Polypyrrole (PPy) is emerging as a promising solar thermal material. In this work, we propose an ultrasonic spray coating method to obtain a nanofiber light-trapping coating by copolymerization with dopamine (DA), which can be directly synthesized at room temperature rapidly (30 min). Due to its excellent wettability, this coating can transport water and can be directly coated on the thermal insulating layer, not requiring an additional water transport layer. This nanoscale coating significantly improves solar absorption at different incident angles across the full solar spectrum, achieving the highest solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency of 95.8% at 1.385 kg·m^-2·h^-1 under 1 sun. When applied on salt water, this solar evaporator achieves self-cleaning in the absence of solar irradiation. Moreover, the surface structure can be further tuned into granular/plane-fibrous/plane-granular structures by using different oxidants or surfactants, and their formation mechanisms are also proposed. This PPy-DA nanofiber coating shows great potential for SVG and other applications based on a PPy material, especially for those requiring a certain surface morphology.

Colloidal Lithography for Photovoltaics: An Attractive Route for Light Management

The pursuit of ever-more efficient, reliable, and affordable solar cells has pushed the development of nano/micro-technological solutions capable of boosting photovoltaic (PV) performance without significantly increasing costs. One of the most relevant solutions is based on light management via photonic wavelength-sized structures, as these enable pronounced efficiency improvements by reducing reflection and by trapping the light inside the devices. Furthermore, optimized microstructured coatings allow self-cleaning functionality via effective water repulsion, which reduces the accumulation of dust and particles that cause shading. Nevertheless, when it comes to market deployment, nano/micro-patterning strategies can only find application in the PV industry if their integration does not require high additional costs or delays in high-throughput solar cell manufacturing. As such, colloidal lithography (CL) is considered the preferential structuring method for PV, as it is an inexpensive and highly scalable soft-patterning technique allowing nanoscopic precision over indefinitely large areas. Tuning specific parameters, such as the size of colloids, shape, monodispersity, and final arrangement, CL enables the production of various templates/masks for different purposes and applications. This review intends to compile several recent high-profile works on this subject and how they can influence the future of solar electricity.

Light-Trapping SERS Substrate with Regular Bioinspired Arrays for Detecting Trace Dyes

Recently, few studies have focused on the light-trapping surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate combined with Si micropyramids and Ag (or Au). However, the Si micropyramids possess no ordered period, which not only affects the repeatability of the SERS signal but also affects the theoretical exploration. Here, the ordered micropyramids with strong light-trapping capability were fabricated by utilizing unconventional nanosphere lithography and anisotropy wet etching technique. Then, the Ag nanobowls were assembled on the ordered micropyramids to form the SERS substrate with bioinspired compound-eyes structure by utilizing the liquid-solid interface self-assembly and transfer technique. Especially, the evidence for the contribution of antireflective Si micropyramids to Raman enhancement was first presented. For this bioinspired SERS substrate, the lowest concentration of R6G that can be detected is 10^-13 M with the level of a single molecule, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) is 3.68%. Meanwhile, the quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis can be realized. Especially, simultaneous trace detection of four common dyes (R6G, CV, MG, and MB) in food can be realized, suggesting that this SERS substrate will have a good application prospect in the field of optical sensors.

First records of 31 species of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) in Cameroon, with remarks on their elevational ranges

Background

The biodiversity of West and Central Africa is understudied, including butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Cameroon, through its position in between few biogeographic regions and diversity of habitats, is an important hotspot of lepidopteran diversity. However, the country also ranks low when it comes to local biodiversity knowledge. During our long-term ecological projects in the Cameroonian part of the Gulf of Guinea Highlands, we collected rich material of butterflies and moths, including a number of interesting faunistic records.

New information

In this study, we report 31 species of butterflies and moths which have not yet been recorded in Cameroon. These species comprised eight new genera records for the country. In many cases, our records represented an important extension of the species’ known distribution, including ten species whose distribution ranges extended into the Guinean biogeographic region. We also comment on the species’ elevational distribution ranges on Mount Cameroon where most of our records originated. Additionally, we confirm the presence of a butterfly Telchiniaencedena, after more than a century since its first and so far its only record in Cameroon.

Exploiting the Synergistic Effect of Kairomones and Light-Emitting Diodes on the Attraction of Phlebotomine Sand Flies to Light Traps in Brazil

The synergistic effect of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and kairomones on the attraction of sand flies to light traps was evaluated. Octenol and lactic acid were used as chemical attractants. Green LEDs and the incandescent lamps were used as light attractants. Five CDC-type light traps with the respective combination of attractants (incandescent lamp, incandescent lamp + chemical attractant, green LED, green LED + chemical attractant, and chemical attractant alone [without light]) were set between 18:00 and 06:00 following a Latin square design. A total of 6,536 sand flies and 16 species were collected. The most frequent species collected was Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) (Diptera, Psychodidae) accounting for 43.21% of all individuals. Order of success (mean, SD) of lactic acid attractant fly capture was as follows: LED + lactic acid (36.83 ± 4.74), LED alone (34.87 ± 4.61), incandescent lamp + lactic acid (22.80 ± 3.19), incandescent lamp alone (12.67 ± 2.03), and lactic acid (0.46 ± 0.13). Order of success of octenol attractant fly capture was as follows: LED + octenol (37.23 ± 5.61), LED alone (35.77 ± 5.69), incandescent lamp + octenol (18.63 ± 3.28), incandescent lamp alone (14.67 ± 2.86), and octenol alone (1.80 ± 0.65). With exception of lactic acid + incandescent light, chemical synergists played no part in significantly increasing light trap capture of phlebotomine sand flies. However, the use of LEDs, with or without such attractants, provided significantly higher capture compared to the incandescent lamp with or without such chemicals, showing that LEDs are suitable and efficient light sources for surveillance and monitoring of phlebotomine sand flies in Brazil.

Broadband Absorption Enhancement in Polymer Solar Cells Using Highly Efficient Plasmonic Heterostructured Nanocrystals

Raising the light absorption of the photoactive layer in polymer solar cells (PSCs) without increasing the layer thickness is desirable but challenging because of the low carrier mobility of organic materials. Herein, we used the coupled localized surface plasmon resonance of heterostructured Au-Cu_{2- x}S nanocrystals (NCs) to improve the light-trapping capability of the photoactive layer of PSCs. Broadband light absorption and a considerable improvement of the power conversion efficiency were obtained when the photoactive layer was doped with a tiny amount of NCs. This can be explicated by the enhanced near-field intensity and broadband scattering properties of added NCs.

Broadband Omnidirectional Light Trapping in Gold-Decorated ZnO Nanopillar Arrays

The photoluminescence (PL) and reflectivity characteristics of zinc oxide nanopillars (ZnO-NPs) grown on indium-tin-oxide (ITO)-coated glasses were investigated. The room temperature PL showed bright white-light emission for the undoped ZnO-NPs grown at 600 °C, suggesting the close relation between the optical characteristic and the growth conditions being carried out for obtaining the present ZnO-NPs. The reflectivity of the as-grown ZnO-NPs array was about ∼29% with the wavelength of the incident light ranging from 200 to 1800 nm. Nevertheless, the reflectance reduced significantly to less than 9.9% when a layer of gold (Au) was deposited on ZnO-NPs by sputtering for 5 min, corresponding to more than 65% reduction in Au-coated ZnO-NPs (Au/ZnO-NPs). Moreover, the angle-resolved reflectance measurements on the present Au/ZnO-NPs array show an omnidirectional light-trapping characteristic. These remarkable characteristics, broadband and omnidirectional light-trapping of Au/ZnO-NPs, are attributed to the extended effective optical path of the incident light due to subwavelength scattering resulting from the presence of Au nanoparticles.

Nano-Photonic Structures for Light Trapping in Ultra-Thin Crystalline Silicon Solar Cells

Thick wafer-silicon is the dominant solar cell technology. It is of great interest to develop ultra-thin solar cells that can reduce materials usage, but still achieve acceptable performance and high solar absorption. Accordingly, we developed a highly absorbing ultra-thin crystalline Si based solar cell architecture using periodically patterned front and rear dielectric nanocone arrays which provide enhanced light trapping. The rear nanocones are embedded in a silver back reflector. In contrast to previous approaches, we utilize dielectric photonic crystals with a completely flat silicon absorber layer, providing expected high electronic quality and low carrier recombination. This architecture creates a dense mesh of wave-guided modes at near-infrared wavelengths in the absorber layer, generating enhanced absorption. For thin silicon (<2 μm) and 750 nm pitch arrays, scattering matrix simulations predict enhancements exceeding 90%. Absorption approaches the Lambertian limit at small thicknesses (<10 μm) and is slightly lower (by ~5%) at wafer-scale thicknesses. Parasitic losses are ~25% for ultra-thin (2 μm) silicon and just 1%-2% for thicker (>100 μm) cells. There is potential for 20 μm thick cells to provide 30 mA/cm² photo-current and >20% efficiency. This architecture has great promise for ultra-thin silicon solar panels with reduced material utilization and enhanced light-trapping.

Interface Engineering of High Efficiency Organic-Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells

Insufficient interface conformity is a challenge faced in hybrid organic-silicon heterojunction solar cells because of using conventional pyramid antireflection texturing provoking the porosity of interface. In this study, we tested alternative textures, in particular rounded pyramids and inverted pyramids to compare the performance. It was remarkably improved delivering 7.61%, 8.91% and 10.04% efficiency employing conventional, rounded, and inverted pyramids, respectively. The result was interpreted in terms of gradually improving conformity of the Ag/organic/silicon interface, together with the gradually decreasing serial resistance. Altogether, the present data may guide further efforts arising the interface engineering for mastering high efficient heterojunction solar cells.

Large-Area Nanosphere Self-Assembly by a Micro-Propulsive Injection Method for High Throughput Periodic Surface Nanotexturing

A high throughput surface texturing process for optical and optoelectric devices based on a large-area self-assembly of nanospheres via a low-cost micropropulsive injection (MPI) method is presented. The novel MPI process enables the formation of a well-organized monolayer of hexagonally arranged nanosphere arrays (NAs) with tunable periodicity directly on the water surface, which is then transferred onto the preset substrates. This process can readily reach a throughput of 3000 wafers/h, which is compatible with the high volume photovoltaic manufacturing, thereby presenting a highly versatile platform for the fabrication of periodic nanotexturing on device surfaces. Specifically, a double-sided grating texturing with top-sided nanopencils and bottom-sided inverted-nanopyramids is realized in a thin film of crystalline silicon (28 μm in thickness) using chemical etching on the mask of NAs to significantly enhance antireflection and light trapping, resulting in absorptions nearly approaching the Lambertian limit over a broad wavelength range of 375-1000 nm and even surpassing this limit beyond 1000 nm. In addition, it is demonstrated that the NAs can serve as templates for replicas of three-dimensional conformal amorphous silicon films with significantly enhanced light harvesting. The MPI induced self-assembly process may provide a universal and cost-effective solution for boosting light utilization, a problem of crucial importance for ultrathin solar cells.
