Synergy of Weakly Solvated Electrolyte and LiF-Reinforced Interphase Enables Long-Term Operation of Li-Metal Batteries at Low Temperatures

Hindered by the high diffusion energy barrier of Li+ in graphite anode layers, the low-temperature application of traditional Li-ion batteries is limited. Lithium metal without intercalation and with excellent specific capacity is expected to support battery operation at low temperatures. However, due to the low conductivity, high freezing point, and strong solvation energy of traditional carbonate electrolytes, the application of lithium-metal batteries at low temperatures remains challenged. In this paper, an all-ester-based ternary solvent electrolyte based on fluorinated carbonate and methyl acetate is developed to improve the cyclic efficiency of the Li-metal anode at subzero temperatures. Methyl acetate, with low viscosity and low freezing point, endows Li+ with efficient transfer in the bulk phase at low temperatures. Fluorinated cosolvent regulates the solvation structure, thereby facilitating Li+ desolvation while forming a LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase. The electrolyte exhibits good compatibility with the Li-metal anode, as confirmed by the significantly reduced kinetic barrier of Li+ diffusion at the interface. The theoretical calculations suggest that anions occupy the dominant positions within the inner solvation sheath. The in situ/ex situ characterizations provide straightforward evidence of a dendrite-free Li-metal electrode during cycling. As a result, the symmetric Li||Li cell is able to cycle stably for thousands of hours at current densities of 0.5 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2. When paired with a LiFePO4 cathode, the battery at 0.2 C (1 C = 170 mA g-1) has a capacity retention of 95.4% after 200 cycles at -15 °C and 92.6% after 100 cycles at -20 °C, respectively.

Engineering the d-Orbital Energy of Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Solid-State Electrolytes for Lithium-Metal Batteries

Having an orbital-level understanding of the relationship between the electronic state of a central metal in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) and Li+ ion conductivity is crucial yet challenging for lithium-metal batteries (LMBs). In this study, we report the synthesis of functionalized UiO-66 as a model system to investigate the relationship between the d-band energy of Zr 3d orbitals and Li+ ion conductivity. Specifically, the NO2 group in electron-withdrawing NO2-decorated UiO-66 (NO2-UiO-66) can capture electron from ZrO8 sites, resulting the increased energy in 3dz2 and 3dxz/yz orbitals of Zr atom. The high-energy 3dz2 and 3dxz/yz orbitals of Zr in NO2-UiO-66 hybridize with the 2pz and 2px/y orbitals of O in ClO4-, leading to decreased antibonding orbital energy and resulting in a strong adsorption, ultimately immobilizing the anions and enhancing ion conductivities. Establishing the correlation between the d-orbital energy and Li+ ion conductivity may create a descriptor for designing efficient SSEs for LMBs.

Studies on Composite Solid Electrolytes with a Dual Selective Confinement Interface Structure of Anions for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) have attracted much attention due to their good thermal stability and high energy density. However, solid-state electrolytes with low conductivity and prominent interfacial issues have hindered the further development of SSLBs. In this research, inspired from a selective confinement structure of anions, a novel HMOF-DNSE composite solid electrolyte with a dual selective confinement interface structure is proposed based on the semi-interpenetrating structure generated by poly(vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), poly(di-n-butylmethylammonium) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PDADMATFSI), and a metal-organic frameworks MOF derivative (HMOF) as a filler. The dual-network structure of PVDF-HFP/PDADMATFSI combined with HMOF formed a dual selective confinement interface structure to confine out the movement of large anions TFSI-, thereby enhancing the transfer ability of Li+. Subsequently, the addition of HMOF further improves the transfer of Li+ by binding up TFSI- through its crystal structure. The results show that HMOF-DNSE possesses a high room-temperature ionic conductivity (0.7 mS cm-1), a wide electrochemical window (up to 4.5 V), and a high Li+ transfer number (tLi+) (0.56). LiFePO4/HMOF-DNSE/Li cell shows an excellent capacity of 141.5 mAh g-1 at 1C rate under room temperature, with a high retention of 80.1% after 500 cycles. The material design strategy, which is based on selective confinement interface structures of anions, offers valuable insights into enhancing the electrochemical performance of solid-state lithium batteries.

Revealing the Multifunctions of Li3N in the Suspension Electrolyte for Lithium Metal Batteries

Inorganic-rich solid-electrolyte interphases (SEIs) on Li metal anodes improve the electrochemical performance of Li metal batteries (LMBs). Therefore, a fundamental understanding of the roles played by essential inorganic compounds in SEIs is critical to realizing and developing high-performance LMBs. Among the prevalent SEI inorganic compounds observed for Li metal anodes, Li₃N is often found in the SEIs of high-performance LMBs. Herein, we elucidate new features of Li₃N by utilizing a suspension electrolyte design that contributes to the improved electrochemical performance of the Li metal anode. Through empirical and computational studies, we show that Li₃N guides Li electrodeposition along its surface, creates a weakly solvating environment by decreasing Li⁺-solvent coordination, induces organic-poor SEI on the Li metal anode, and facilitates Li⁺ transport in the electrolyte. Importantly, recognizing specific roles of SEI inorganics for Li metal anodes can serve as one of the rational guidelines to design and optimize SEIs through electrolyte engineering for LMBs.

Stable Li-Metal Batteries Enabled by in Situ Gelation of an Electrolyte and In-Built Fluorinated Solid Electrolyte Interface

Lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) are the focus of upcoming energy storage systems with extremely high-energy density. However, the leakage of liquid electrolyte and the uncontrollable dendritic Li growth on the surface of the Li anode lead to their low reversibility and safety risks. Herein, we propose a stable quasi-solid LMB with in situ gelation of liquid electrolyte and an in-built fluorinated solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the Li anode. The gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is readily constructed via cationic polymerization between lithium hexafluorophosphate and ether electrolyte. The fluorine-containing additive, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), plays a crucial role in the building of a dense SEI with fast interfacial charge transport. The ex situ spectroscopic characterizations suggest that the enhanced LiF species in the SEI with the addition of FEC and the in situ optical microscopy reveal the inhibited dendritic Li growth. Moreover, GPE@FEC exhibits a high oxidative stability beyond 5.0 V (vs Li/Li⁺). The significantly improved Li plating/stripping efficiency (400 cycles, 98.7%) is presented for the Li∥Cu cells equipped with GPE@FEC. Decent cycling stability is also available for the cells with the LiFePO₄ cathode, reflecting the feasibility of GPE@FEC for practical LMBs with enhanced stability and safety.
