Abstract
Insulin resistance is a significant contributor to the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and is associated with obesity, physical inactivity, and low maximal oxygen uptake. While intense and prolonged exercise may have negative effects, physical activity can have a positive influence on cellular metabolism and the immune system. Moderate exercise has been shown to reduce oxidative stress and improve antioxidant status, whereas intense exercise can increase oxidative stress in the short term. The impact of exercise on pro-inflammatory cytokine production is complex and varies depending on intensity and duration. Exercise can also counteract the harmful effects of ageing and inflamm-ageing. This review aims to examine the molecular pathways altered by exercise in non-obese individuals at higher risk of developing T2D, including glucose utilization, lipid metabolism, mitochondrial function, inflammation and oxidative stress, with the potential to improve insulin sensitivity. The focus is on understanding the potential benefits of exercise for improving insulin sensitivity and providing insights for future targeted interventions before onset of disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Indonesia, with its expansive territorial waters, hosts numerous fishing communities residing on various islands. Many of these communities rely on diving activities, predominantly free diving without standardized safety equipment. This practice poses risks, including the potential for hypoxia-induced oxidative stress, which plays a role in disease pathogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in freediving fishermen and explore potential influencing factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS The research involved 30 freediving fishermen, aged 20-60, who engaged in diving at least twice weekly over the last 3 months. Blood plasma MDA levels were assessed using the Will method. RESULTS Results revealed a median age of 40.5 years (range: 20-59), a body mass index of 23.1 ± 2.8, and a mean blood pressure of 132/85 mmHg. A significant portion of the subjects exhibited smoking habits (90%) and alcohol consumption (76.7%). The median MDA level among subjects was measured at 0.42 nmol/mL (range: 0.34-0.70). However, no discernible relationship was found between smoking habits, alcohol consumption, and MDA level categories, as determined by the Fisher exact test (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS While these findings shed light on the MDA levels in freediving fishermen, further research is warranted to explore additional factors that may influence these levels. This comprehensive understanding is crucial for addressing the health risks associated with free diving practices in this unique population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Gastric ulcer (GU) is a prevalent chronic digestive disease affecting about 10% of the world's population leading to gastrointestinal perforation and bleeding. Genistein is a legume flavonoid with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the ability of genistein to reduce experimentally induced GU in rats by affecting gastric tissue fibrosis Wnt/β-catenin/TGF-β/SMAD4 pathway. METHODS Thirty rats were used. Ten rats served as control, and GU was induced in twenty rats using a single dose of indomethacin (80 mg/kg) orally. Following induction of GU, ten were treated with genistein 25 mg/kg orally. The gastric tissues were isolated to investigate markers of gastric fibrosis, Wnt, β-catenin, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, SMAD4, and Protein kinase B (PKB). In addition, gastric sections were stained with PAS and anti-TGF-β antibodies. RESULTS Investigation GU micro-images revealed degeneration in both surface cells and glandular epithelial cells, which was improved by genistein. In addition, treatment with genistein significantly reduced the expression of Wnt, β-catenin, TGF-β, SMAD4, and PKB. CONCLUSION Besides antioxidant activity, genistein improves experimentally induced GU in rats, at least in part, via reduction of gastric tissue fibrosis as indicated by reduction in expression of Wnt, β-catenin, TGF-β, SMAD4, and PKB.

Abstract
(1) Background: Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a major and stable product of oxidative stress. MDA circulates in the blood and is excreted in the urine in its free and conjugated forms, notably with L-lysine and L-serine. MDA is the most frequently measured biomarker of oxidative stress, namely lipid peroxidation. Oxidative stress is generally assumed to be associated with disease and to increase with age. Here, we review and discuss the literature concerning circulating and excretory MDA as a biomarker of lipid peroxidation in aging subjects with regard to health and disease, such as kidney disease, erectile dysfunction, and COVID-19. (2) Methods: Scientific articles, notably those reporting on circulating (plasma, serum) and urinary MDA, which concern health and disease, and which appeared in PubMed were considered; they formed the basis for evaluating the potential increase in oxidative stress, particularly lipid peroxidation, as humans age. (3) Results and Conclusions: The results reported in the literature thus far are contradictory. The articles considered in the present study are not supportive of the general view that oxidative stress increases with aging. Many functions of several organs, including the filtration efficiency of the kidneys, are physiologically reduced in men and women as they age. This effect is likely to result in the apparent "accumulation" of biomarkers of oxidative stress, concomitantly with the "accumulation" of biomarkers of an organ's function, such as creatinine. How free and conjugated MDA forms are transported in various organs (including the brain) and how they are excreted in the urine via the kidney is not known, and investigating these questions should be the objective of forthcoming studies. The age- and gender-related increase in circulating creatinine might be a useful factor to be taken into consideration when investigating oxidative stress and aging.

Abstract
Background Smokeless and smoking tobacco use results in increased oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, which play a major role in the causation of cancer in tobacco habituates. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a product of lipid peroxidation, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), the main enzymes in the antioxidant defense system, are assessed among tobacco users. This study gave insight into the relationship between tobacco use, oxidative stress, and antioxidant enzyme activity. Aims and Objectives This study aimed to estimate the levels of lipid peroxidation product MDA and antioxidant enzymes SOD and GPx among tobacco users and compare them with controls. Method A case-control study comprising 30 smokeless tobacco users, 30 smokers, and 30 controls was enrolled for the study. Serum MDA was assayed by the thiobarbituric acid method; serum SOD and GPx were assayed using Ransel antioxidant kits. The results were statistically analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Results Serum MDA levels, which indicate oxidative stress, were increased among all tobacco users and significantly increased among smokeless tobacco users as compared to smokers. Serum SOD and GPx levels were decreased among both forms of tobacco users compared with controls. With an increase in duration and frequency of tobacco use, there was a significant increase in serum MDA levels among both smokers and chewers and a decrease in serum SOD and GPx levels. Conclusion In the present day, the tobacco epidemic has attained enormous proportions with the tobacco habit starting as early as 13-14 years and leading to serious conditions with high morbidity and mortality. These biochemical parameters such as MDA, SOD, and GPx, which act as marker of oxidant and antioxidant system, can constitute important tools for evidence-based medicine for educating patients and motivating interventions in tobacco cessation therapy.

Abstract
Oxidative stress plays an important role in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and especially in lupus nephritis (LN). The aim of this study was to compare redox-related biomarkers between patients with active LN, quiescent SLE (Q-SLE) and healthy controls (HC) and to explore their association with clinical characteristics such as disease activity in patients. We investigated levels of plasma free thiols (R-SH, sulfhydryl groups), levels of soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in SLE patients with active LN (n = 23), patients with quiescent SLE (n = 47) and HC (n = 23). Data of LN patients who previously participated in Dutch lupus nephritis studies and longitudinal samples up to 36 months were analyzed. Thiol levels were lower in active LN at baseline and Q-SLE patients compared to HC. In generalized estimating equation (GEE) modelling, free thiol levels were negatively correlated with the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) over time (p < 0.001). sRAGE and MDA were positively correlated with the SLEDAI over time (p = 0.035 and p = 0.016, respectively). These results indicate that oxidative stress levels in LN patients are increased compared to HC and associated with SLE disease activity. Therefore, interventional therapy to restore redox homeostasis may be useful as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of oxidative damage in SLE.

Abstract
Introduction Numerous meta-analyses have demonstrated the beneficial effects of probiotics on oxidative stress biomarkers, although some studies have contradictory results. Therefore, the current research was conducted to obtain a precise and definite understanding on the impact of probiotics on oxidative stress biomarkers in adults. Methods We conducted a comprehensive systematic search of results on Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar dating up to March 2022. Fifteen meta-analyses were included in this umbrella meta-analysis. The random-effects model was employed to obtain the overall effect size. Subgroup analyses were carried out based on supplementation dosage and duration, mean age, and study population. Results Our results indicated that probiotics supplementation meaningfully decreased serum malondialdehyde (MDA) (ESWMD = -0.56, 95% CI: -0.72, -0.39; p < 0.001, and ESSMD = -0.50, 95% CI: -0.66, -0.34; p < 0.001). Moreover, the findings showed that probiotics resulted in a significant increase in total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (ESWMD = 29.18, 95% CI: 16.31, 42.04; p < 0.001, and ESSMD = 0.25, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.47; p = 0.032), total glutathione (GSH) (ESWMD: 30.65; 95% CI: 16.94, 44.35, p < 0.001), and nitric oxide (NO) (ESWMD: 1.48; 95% CI: 0.31, 2.65, p = 0.013; I2 = 51.7%, p = 0.043). Discussion Probiotics could be considered a strong agent in the reinforcement of antioxidant status and preventing the incidence of chronic diseases.

Abstract
The kinetics of elimination of various dicarbonyl-modified low-density lipoproteins from the bloodstream of Macaca mulatta monkeys were investigated. The low-density lipoproteins (LDL) in the monkey blood plasma were isolated by density gradient ultracentrifugation and labeled in vitro with the fluorescent dye FITC; thereupon, they were modified with different natural low molecular-weight dicarbonyls: malondialdehyde (MDA), glyoxal, or methylglyoxal. The control native FITC-labeled LDL and dicarbonyl-modified FITC-labeled LDL were injected into the monkey's ulnar vein; thereafter, blood samples were taken at fixed time intervals during 24 h. The plasma level of FITC-labeled LDL was determined with spectrofluorimetry. The study established that glyoxal- and monkeysglyoxal-labeled LDL circulated in monkey virtually at the same time as native (non-modified) LDL. In contrast, MDA-modified LDL disappeared from the blood extremely rapidly. Administration of the PCSK9 inhibitor involocumab (which increases LDL utilization) to patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) was found to significantly reduce levels of MDA-modified LDL.

Abstract
Molecular hydrogen has an anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effect, which is associated with its antioxidant properties. Erythrocytes are subjected to oxidative stress in pathologies of the cardiovascular system, which is the cause of a violation of the gas transport function of blood and microcirculation. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the effects of H2 inhalation on the functional states of red blood cells (RBCs) in chronic heart failure (CHF) in rats. The markers of lipid peroxidation, antioxidant capacity, electrophoretic mobility of erythrocytes (EPM), aggregation, levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and 2,3-diphosphoglyceric acid (2,3-DPG), hematological parameters were estimated in RBCs. An increase in EPM and a decrease in the level of aggregation were observed in groups with multiple and single H2 application. The orientation of lipoperoxidation processes in erythrocytes was combined with the dynamics of changes in oxidative processes in blood plasma, it was observed with both single and multiple exposures, although the severity of the changes was greater with multiple H2 inhalations. Probably, the antioxidant effects of molecular hydrogen mediate its metabolic action. Based on these data, we conclude the use of H2 improves microcirculation and oxygen transport function of blood and can be effective in the treatment of CHF.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of arbutin (ARB) against brain injury induced in rats with potassium bromate (KBrO3 ). The rats were divided into four groups as Group 1: Control (0.9% NaCl ml/kg/day p.), Group 2: KBrO3 (100 mg/kg (gavage), Group 3: ARB (50 mg/kg/day p.), and Group 4: KBrO3 + ARB (100 mg/kg (gavage) + 50 mg/kg/day p.). At the end of the fifth day of the study, the rats in all groups were killed, and their brain tissues were collected. In the collected brain tissues, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) levels were measured, and routine histopathological examinations were made. The MDA levels in the group that was exposed to KBrO3 were significantly higher than those in the control group (p ˂ 0.001). In comparison to the KBrO3 group, the MDA levels in the KBrO3 + ARB group were significantly lower (p ˂ 0.001). It was observed that SOD and CAT enzyme activity levels were significantly lower in the KBrO3 group compared to the control group (p ˂ 0.001), while these levels were significantly higher in the KBrO3 + ARB group than in the KBrO3 group (p ˂ 0.001). Additionally, the group that was subjected to KBrO3 toxicity, as well as ARB administration, had much lower levels of histopathologic signs than the group that was subjected to KBrO3 toxicity only. Consequently, it was found that KBrO3 exposure led to injury in the brain tissues of the rats, and using ARB was effective in preventing this injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a biomarker commonly used to detect colorectal cancer. CEA levels are affected by many factors, including cardiometabolic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and diabetes. Cardiometabolic diseases and cancer share a similar pathological inflammatory pathway, which correlates with an unhealthy lifestyle. Hence, establishing an adequate CEA cut-off value might be a valuable reference for developing precision healthcare programs for cardiometabolic disease prevention. This study aimed to investigate the association between cardiometabolic risks and serum CEA and the underlying factors. METHODS A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted between March and December 2021 on the western coast of Taiwan. Lifestyle data were assessed using a structured questionnaire. The cardiometabolic biomarkers, serum CEA, urine malondialdehyde, and 1-hydroxypyrene were quantified by the central laboratory of the collaborating hospital. Chi-square and binary multivariable logistic regression implemented in R version 4.0.2 were used to identify factors defining the risk of high serum CEA levels. RESULTS A total of 6,295 adult residents without cancer-related diseases completed the study. The mean age was 48.6 (SD = 16.4) years, 56% were female, 32% had metabolic syndrome, and 23% and 10% had CVDs and diabetes, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression showed that age ≥ 65 years, male sex, alcohol consumption, smoking, infrequent use of dental floss, fewer remaining teeth, CVDs, diabetes, and oxidative stress were significantly associated with serum CEA ≥ 3 ng/mL. The discriminatory performance of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.75 (0.73-0.76), showing that this model was suitable for distinguishing high CEA levels. CONCLUSION Our findings highlight the importance of understanding cardiometabolic diseases, unhealthy lifestyles, and oxidative stress, which contribute to high serum CEA. This study demonstrates that CEA, a well-known tumor marker, can help the early detection and prevention of cardiometabolic diseases via personalized lifestyle modification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The roles of plasma cell-free (pcf) mitochondrial DNA (mtDNApcf) and nuclear DNA (nDNApcf) in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) remain unclear. We analyzed the relative copies of mtDNApcf and nDNApcf and investigated their association with the levels of plasma 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and mRNA of leukocyte C-type lectin domain family 5 member A (CLEC5A) in SLE patients. METHODS A total of 80 SLE patients and 43 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. Their plasma samples were subjected to the measurements of mtDNApcf copies, nDNApcf copies, 8-OHdG and MDA, respectively. Their leukocytes were analyzed for CLEC5A mRNA expression. RESULTS SLE patients had higher nDNApcf copies (2.84 ± 1.99 vs. 2.00 ± 0.88, p = 0.002), lower mtDNApcf copies (4.81 ± 6.33 vs. 9.83 ± 14.20, p = 0.032), higher plasma 8-OHdG (0.227 ± 0.085 vs. 0.199 ± 0.041 ng/mL, p = 0.016), lower plasma MDA (3.02 ± 2.20 vs. 4.37 ± 2.16 μM, p = 0.001) and similar leukocyte CLEC5A mRNA expression levels (1.21 ± 1.17 vs. 1.26 ± 1.05, p = 0.870), as compared with those of HCs. Among the HCs, SLE patients with SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) ≤8, and SLE patients with SLEDAI >8, their respective mtDNApcf copies decreased stepwisely (9.83 ± 14.20 vs. 6.28 ± 7.91 vs. 3.19 ± 3.35, p = 0.054). The nDNApcf copies of HCs, SLE patients without nephritis, and SLE patients with nephritis were increased stepwisely (2.00 ± 0.88 vs. 2.63 ± 1.74 vs. 3.16 ± 2.34, p = 0.043). Among SLE patients, higher nDNApcf copies were associated with higher levels of plasma 8-OHdG (p < 0.001) but lower plasma MDA (p = 0.019). Among HCs but not SLE patients, higher nDNApcf copies (p = 0.013) or lower mtDNApcf copies (p < 0.001) were related to higher levels of leukocyte CLEC5A mRNA expression. CONCLUSIONS Higher nDNApcf, lower mtDNApcf, increased ROS-elicited oxidative DNA damage and dysregulated leukocyte CLEC5A expression might be implicated in the pathogenesis of SLE.

Abstract
Some physiological, oxidative, and antioxidant enzymatic patterns were assessed in plants of three local Sicilian landraces of long shelf-life tomatoes ('Custonaci', 'Salina', and 'Vulcano'), as compared to the commercial tomato hybrid 'Faino' (control). Three water treatments were considered in open-field: DRY (no irrigation); IRR (long-season full irrigation); REW (drought/rewatering cycles). During the growing season, soil water deficit (SWD) was estimated, and relative water content (RWC), specific leaf area (SLA), proline and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and glutathione peroxidase (GPX), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were measured in leaves. Differently from control, RWC in local landraces exhibited a similar pattern in REW and DRY, indicating a low capacity to re-hydrate after rewatering. Positive correlation of proline content vs. SWD in all local landraces highlights an osmotic adjustment occurring in these tomatoes in response to limited soil water content. Long shelf-life tomatoes suffered minor oxidative stress due to severe soil water deficit, as revealed by the lower levels of MDA with respect to the control. Significant correlation of CAT vs. SWD for all tomatoes indicates that this antioxidant enzyme, among those analyzed, may be considered as a biomarker for a water stress condition more than for oxidative stress due to water deficit.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To measure plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress (OS), in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) compared with healthy control (HC) subjects in order to determine if it is a possible biomarker of depression. METHODS This prospective cross-sectional study enrolled patients with MDD and HC subjects. The plasma levels of MDA were measured using a commercially-available colorimetric assay. RESULTS A total of 30 patients with MDD and 20 HC subjects with similar sex, age and body mass index distribution were enrolled in the study. Patients with MDD had significantly higher plasma levels of MDA than the HC subjects. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for plasma MDA levels in patients with MDD demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.9767. CONCLUSION The findings of this current study provide further evidence of the role pathophysiological relevance of OS and MDA in MDD. This study provides the basis for the use of MDA as a biomarker for MDD.

Abstract
Increased oxidative stress has been shown to lead to muscle damage and reduced physical performance. The antioxidant mechanism is most likely to reduce these relationships, but in the context of the action of carotenoids, more research is needed. This study aimed to investigate whether carotenoids modify the association between plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and physical performance in Korean adolescents. The study sample consisted of 381 adolescents (164 boys, 217 girls) aged 13–18, who participated in the 2018 National Fitness Award Project. We quantified α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene, and MDA levels in plasma using HPLC with photodiode array detection. Among boys but not girls, plasma MDA level was negatively associated (β = −0.279, p = 0.0030) with total plasma carotenoid levels and marginally negatively associated (β = −0.907, p = 0.0876) with absolute hand grip strength. After adjustment for covariates in boys, the MDA level was negatively associated with absolute hand grip strength and relative hand grip strength; this association was observed only in groups with individual carotenoid and total carotenoid values below the median. These findings support a significant association between plasma MDA level and hand grip strength, and this association has been potentially modified by plasma levels of carotenoids in Korean male adolescents.

Abstract
Flavonoids are compounds with a benzopyranic structure that exhibits multiple pharmacological activities. They are known for their venotonic activity, but their mechanism of action remains unclear. It is thought that, as this mechanism is mediated by prostaglandins, these compounds may interfere with the arachidonic acid (AA) cascade. These assays are designed to measure the antiplatelet aggregation capacity of quercetin, rutin, diosmetin, diosmin, and hidrosmin, as well as to evaluate a potential structure−activity ratio. In this paper, several studies on platelet aggregation at different concentrations (from 0.33 mM to 1.5 mM) of different flavone compounds are conducted, measuring platelet aggregation by impedance aggregometry, and the cyclooxygenase (COX) activity by metabolites generated, including the activity of the pure recombinant enzyme in the presence of these polyphenols. The results obtained showed that quercetin and diosmetin aglycones have a greater antiplatelet effect and inhibit the COX enzyme activity to a greater extent than their heterosides; however, the fact that greater inhibition of the pure recombinant enzyme was achieved by heterosides suggests that these compounds may have difficulty in crossing biological membranes. In any case, in view of the results obtained, it can be concluded that flavonoids could be useful as coadjuvants in the treatment of cardiovascular pathologies.

Abstract
Background: The association between the biomarkers of environmental exposure, oxidative stress, and health-related behaviors in community residents living in an endemic viral hepatitis area and near petrochemical industrial complexes remains unclear. From a health promotion perspective, healthcare providers must know what to do for residents concerned about their health and living environment, especially for individual-level and modifiable risk factors. Therefore, we aimed to explore the factors associated with urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Methods: A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted between July 2018 and February 2019 in western coastal Yunlin County, Taiwan. All participants lived within a 10 km radius of a large petrochemical complex and did not work in the factory. This study was conducted with the local hospital through annual community health screening. Biological samples were collected and biomarkers determined and quantified in the central laboratory of the collaborating hospital. Results: A total of 6335 adult residents completed the study. The mean age was 47.7 (SD = 16) years. Out of the total population, 56.4% were female, 30.1% had metabolic syndrome (MetS), and 16.8% and 14.3% had hepatitis B virus antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) positivity, respectively. The median 1-OHP and MDA level was 0.11 and 0.9 μg/g creatinine with an interquartile range of 0.07–0.18, and 0.4–1.5, respectively. The MDA levels correlated with specific diseases. The multivariable ordinal logistic regression model revealed that female sex, smoking, betel nut use, HBsAg, and anti-HCV positivity were associated with higher 1-OHP levels. In men, MetS was associated with higher 1-OHP levels and regular exercise with lower 1-OHP levels. High MDA levels were associated with smoking, betel nut users, HBsAg, and anti-HCV positivity. Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of initiating individualized health promotion programs for residents near petrochemical factories, especially for adults with substance-use and cardiometabolic risk factors. Furthermore, it is crucial to provide further treatment to patients with viral hepatitis.

Abstract
Sophora alopecuroides is known to produce relatively large amounts of alkaloids; however, their ecological consequences remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the allelopathic potential of the main alkaloids, including aloperine, matrine, oxymatrine, oxysophocarpine, sophocarpine, sophoridine, as well as their mixture both in distilled H2O and in the soil matrix. Our results revealed that all the alkaloids possessed inhibitory activity on four receiver species, i.e., Amaranthus retroflexus, Medicago sativa, Lolium perenne and Setaria viridis. The strength of the phytotoxicity of the alkaloids was in the following order: sophocarpine > aloperine > mixture > sophoridine > matrine > oxysophocarpine > oxymatrine (in Petri dish assays), and matrine > mixture > sophocarpine > oxymatrine > oxysophocarpine > sophoridine > aloperine (in pot experiments). In addition, the mixture of the alkaloids was found to significantly increase the IAA content, MDA content and POD activity of M. sativa seedlings, whereas CTK content, ABA content, SOD activity and CAT activity of M. sativa seedlings decreased markedly. Our results suggest S. alopecuroides might produce allelopathic alkaloids to improve its competitiveness and thus facilitate the establishment of its dominance; the potential value of these alkaloids as environmentally friendly herbicides is also discussed.

Abstract
Hormonal changes associated with pregnancy promote oral bacterial growth, which may affect salivary nitric oxide (NO) levels, oxidative stress (OS), and antioxidant capacity (AC). We hypothesized that caries-related bacterial load, NO level, and OS in the saliva change with advancing gestation. The aim of this study was to investigate longitudinal changes in salivary NO, OS, and AC during pregnancy and correlate them with Streptococcus mutans (SM) and Lactobacillus (LB) colonization at different stages of pregnancy. We assessed NO level by Griess method, OS by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA), AC by ABTS radicals and bacterial load by culturing SM and LB in the saliva of pregnant women (n = 96) and compared with non-pregnant women (n = 50) as well as between different stages of pregnancy. Compared with non-pregnant women, NO was 77% higher (4.73 ± 2.87 vs. 2.67 ± 1.55 µM; p < 0.001), MDA was 13% higher (0.96 ± 0.27 vs. 0.85 ± 0.22 nM; p = 0.0055), and AC was 34% lower (60.35 ± 14.33 vs. 80.82 ± 11.60%; p < 0.001) in the late third trimester. NO increased with advancing gestation, but AC and OS did not change significantly during pregnancy. SM were more abundant in pregnant women compared with non-pregnant (p = 0.0012). Pregnancy appears to have an adverse impact on oral health emphasizing the importance optimal oral healthcare during pregnancy.

Abstract
Aromatic plants of Labiatae family are used in poultry diets because of their antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The notion is that hens raised in organic systems face several health and environmental challenges. Hence, the objective here was to assess hens' performances and the quality of their eggs in such systems following a dietary supplementation of Salvia officinalis L. in powder form. The experiments were conducted over two successive years (1 and 2). They lasted 16 weeks each and involved 198 laying hens aged 40 weeks old randomly assigned to three groups: Con (control diet), Sal-0.5%, and Sal-1.0% (diets supplemented with Salvia officinalis L. at 0.5% or 1.0%, respectively). The malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in egg yolks in year 2 were lower in both Sal-0.5% and Sal-1.0% compared to the Con (p < 0.05). The total number of Enterobacteriaceae in eggshells were lower in Sal-1.0% compared to the Con (p < 0.05) in both years. The results suggest that a dietary supplementation of Salvia officinalis L. at 1.0% improves the antioxidant status and reduces the microbial load of eggs produced in organic systems.

Abstract
We studied the effect of nanostructured clathrate complex 9-phenyl-symm-octahydoselenoxanthene (selenopyran) with β-cyclodextrin on the generation of ОН· radicals in the Fenton system and parameters of oxidative stress in rat liver cells incubated at 37°С for 1 h. The complex inhibits the development of free-radical oxidative processes induced by ROS and the most toxic ОН· radicals, reduces the increased level of ROS induced by prooxidants, and exhibits antioxidant activity.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effect of 3',4'-Dihydroxyflavonol (DiOHF) on lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and inflammation in ovarian ischaemia (I)-reperfusion (R) injury. This study was performed on 44 Wistar-albino female rats. Groups were designed as Control; Sham; I/R (the left ovary was ligated for 2 h and then reperfused for 2 h); I/R + DiOHF (after 2 h ischaemia and 2 h reperfusion, 30 mg/kg of DiOHF was given intraperitoneally and reperfusion was allowed for 2 h more); I + DiOHF + R (after 2 h I, 30 mg/kg of DiOHF was given at the beginning of 2 h reperfusion); DiOHF + I/R (2 h after DiOHF administration, the left ovary was ligated for 2 h and then reperfused for 2 h). Blood and ovarian tissue samples were analysed for GSH, MDA, 8-OHdG, SOD, and IL-6. Ovarian tissue was examined histopathologically. Ovarian I/R has led to inflammation and oxidative damage. However, DiOHF activated the antioxidant system and prevented DNA damage induced by I/R in ovarian tissue. Vascularisation, oedema, and inflammation also occurred in ovarian tissue in I/R group. The results of this study indicated that I/R led to disturbance of the oxidant/antioxidant system balance and increased DNA damage; however, DiOHF supplementation prevented DNA damage, lipid peroxidation and inflammation by increasing the antioxidant system in ovarian I/R injury in rats. However, in potential I/R situations, DiOHF application appears to be beneficial in reducing inflammation, oxidant injury, and DNA damage, and in activating the antioxidant system. IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injuries lead to damage in cells or tissues due to insufficient blood flow.What do the results of this study add? Increased DNA injury and inflammatory response (IL-6) and structural impairment were treated by administration of intraperitoneal (DiOHF) which strongly stimulated the antioxidant system, inhibited antioxidant activities, prevented DNA damage and inflammation process.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? This study's strength is that it is the first research demonstrates the prevention of DNA damage in ovarian I/R by DiOHF supplementation. This flavonoid (DiOHF) may be used for treatment in different ovarian ischaemia/reperfusion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of acupuncture on vascular endothelial function in patients of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and normal glucose tolerance (NGT). METHODS A total of 140 patients with PCOS were divided into an IGT group (70 cases, 11 dropped off) and a NGT group (70 cases, 9 cases dropped off). The patients in the two groups were treated with full-cycle acupuncture at Zhongwan (CV 12), Guanyuan (CV 4), Qihai (CV 6), Tianshu (ST 25), etc. once every other day, 3 times a week, for 3 months. Before and after treatment, TCM symptom score, insulin resistance index [including fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-hour blood glucose (2hPG), fasting serum insulin (FINS), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)] and vascular endothelial related factors [including asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMD), endothelin-1 (ET-1), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO)] were compared between the two groups; in addition, the obese subgroup and non-obese subgroup of the two groups were further compared. RESULTS Compared before treatment, the TCM symptom scores, ADMD, ET-1 and MDA after treatment were decreased (P<0.05), and NO was increased (P<0.05) in the two groups; FPG, 2hPG, FINS and HOMA-IR after treatment were decreased in the IGT group (P<0.05), the improvement of the above indexes in the IGT group was more significant than that in the NGT group (P<0.05). After treatment, the serum levels of ADMD, ET-1 and MDA were decreased (P<0.05), and NO was increased (P<0.05) in the obese subgroup. In the IGT group, the improvement of serum ADMD, ET-1, MDA and NO in the obese subgroup was more significant than that in the non-obese subgroup (P<0.05). In the NGT group, the improvement of ET-1, MDA and NO in the obese subgroup was more significant than that in the non-obese subgroup (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Acupuncture could improve vascular endothelial function in PCOS patients, IGT patients have better efficacy than NGT patients, and obese patients have better efficacy than non-obese patients.

Abstract
In clinical practice, inflammatory pain is an important, unresolved health problem, despite the utilization of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In the last decade, different studies have proven that reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are involved in the development and maintenance of inflammatory pain and hyperalgesia via the post-translation modification of key proteins, such as manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD). It is well-known that inducible cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) plays a crucial role at the beginning of the inflammatory response by converting arachidonic acid into proinflammatory prostaglandin PGE2 and then producing other proinflammatory chemokines and cytokines. Here, we investigated the impact of oxidative stress on COX-2 and prostaglandin (PG) pathways in paw exudates, and we studied how this mechanism can be reversed by using antioxidants during hyperalgesia in a well-characterized model of inflammatory pain in rats. Our results reveal that during the inflammatory state, induced by intraplantar administration of carrageenan, the increase of PGE2 levels released in the paw exudates were associated with COX-2 nitration. Moreover, we showed that the inhibition of ROS with Mn (III) tetrakis (4-benzoic acid) porphyrin(MnTBAP) antioxidant prevented COX-2 nitration, restored the PGE2 levels, and blocked the development of thermal hyperalgesia.

Abstract
Background Herbicides such as glyphosate, paraquat, and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid have been reported to cause adverse side effects through production of reactive oxygen species. However, there were no data representing the adverse effects of a mixture herbicide usage in farmers, especially the changes in oxidative marker and antioxidant defense. This study aimed to determine the urinary malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) level in farmers using mixed herbicides. Methods Ninety-three farmers were recruited, and two spot urine samples (before and after work) were collected. The urinary MDA level was evaluated by thiobarbituric acid reactive substance assay, and the urinary GSH level was determined using the enzymatic recycling method. Results Sixty-two percent of the participants were men, and 59% of the participants worked in a farm for 20–40 years. The common combinations of herbicide usage were glyphosate with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (36.5%). There was no significant difference between pre- and post-work urinary MDA and GSH levels among the 3 groups of herbicides. However, the urinary MDA levels in farmers using the combination of glyphosate and paraquat were significantly higher than those found in farmers using glyphosate alone. The associated factors with changes in MDA levels found that the exposure intensity index (B = 0.154), the cumulative exposure intensity index (B = 0.023), and wearing gloves while working (B = −2.347) were found to be significantly associated with MDA level. Conclusion The results suggest that the combined use of glyphosate and paraquat caused a significant increase in urinary MDA levels. Moreover, intensity of exposure to herbicide and wearing gloves were associated with the level of MDA.

Abstract
Chronic hyperglycemia increases oxidative stress, activates inflammatory pathways and reduces nerve growth factor (NGF) among diabetic patients, which contribute to development of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Tocotrienol-Rich Vitamin E (Tocovid) possesses potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which are postulated to target these pathogeneses in order to ameliorate DPN. This study aims to evaluate the effects of Tocovid on nerve conduction parameters and serum biomarkers among diabetic patients. This multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted on 80 eligible participants. The intervention group (n = 39) was randomly allocated to receive 200 mg of Tocovid twice a day, and the control group (n = 41) received placebo twice a day. At the end of eight weeks, the nerve conduction parameters, as assessed by nerve conduction study, as well as serum biomarkers (NGF, malondialdehyde, vascular cell adhesion molecule 1, tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 and thromboxane B2) were compared between the two groups. Compared to placebo, Tocovid significantly improves the nerve conduction velocities of all nerves (+1.25 m/s, interquartile range [IQR] 3.35, p < 0.001, median nerve; +1.60 m/s, IQR 1.80, p < 0.001, sural nerve; +0.75 m/s, IQR 2.25, p < 0.001, tibial nerve). Meanwhile, the levels of serum NGF were significantly higher in the Tocovid group as compared to placebo at eight weeks post-intervention. Participants receiving Tocovid illustrated highly significant improvement in terms of nerve conduction velocities for all nerves tested after eight weeks of supplementation. In addition, Tocovid supplementation elevated the levels of serum NGF, in which its increase is postulated to reflect enhanced neuronal functions. This novel finding suggests that Tocovid could be a disease-modifying agent targeting serum NGF to improve nerve conduction velocities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Oxygen free radicals (ROS) are considered to be one of the important factors involved in the pathophysiology of aged renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Hydrogen gas has been reported to alleviate I/R injury by scavenging free radicals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hydrogen-rich saline (HRS) on renal I/R injury in aged rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS A rat model of renal I/R injury was induced by 45-min occlusion of the bilateral renal pedicles and 24-h reperfusion. Physiological saline or HRS (8 ml/kg) was administered intraperitoneally 5 min before reperfusion. Parameters indicating renal function (blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (SCr)) and those indicating oxidative stress (tissue levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), tissue activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and tissue expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)) were measured. RESULTS After I/R injury, BUN, SCr, tissue levels of MDA and 8-OHdG, and gene expression of HO-1 were all significantly increased while tissue activities of SOD were significantly decreased. HRS reversed these changes, with the exception of HO-1 expression, which was increased further, and improved renal morphology. CONCLUSIONS HRS improves the renal response to I/R in aged rats, possibly by reducing oxidative stress and upregulating HO-1 gene expression.

Abstract
Curcumin (CC) is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties and has already been tested for its efficiency in different diseases including diabetes mellitus (DM). New formulations and route administration were designed to obtain products with higher bioavailability. Our study aimed to test the effect of intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of liposomal curcumin (lCC) as pre-treatment in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced DM in rats on oxidative stress, liver, and pancreatic functional parameters. Forty-two Wistar-Bratislava rats were randomly divided into six groups (seven animals/group): control (no diabetes), control-STZ (STZ-induced DM —60 mg/100g body weight a single dose intraperitoneal administration, and no CC pre-treatment), two groups with DM and CC pre-treatment (1mg/100g bw—STZ + CC1, 2 mg/100g bw—STZ + CC2), and two groups with DM and lCC pre-treatment (1 mg/100g bw—STZ + lCC1, 2 mg/100g bw—STZ + lCC1). Intraperitoneal administration of Curcumin in diabetic rats showed a significant reduction of nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, total oxidative stress, and catalase for both evaluated formulations (CC and lCC) compared to control group (p < 0.005), with higher efficacy of lCC formulation compared to CC solution (p < 0.002, excepting catalase for STZ + CC2vs. STZ + lCC1when p = 0.0845). The CC and lCC showed hepatoprotective and hypoglycemic effects, a decrease in oxidative stress and improvement in anti-oxidative capacity status against STZ-induced DM in rats (p < 0.002). The lCC also proved better efficacy on MMP-2, and -9 plasma levels as compared to CC (p < 0.003, excepting STZ + CC2 vs. STZ + lCC1 comparison with p = 0.0553). The lCC demonstrated significantly better efficacy as compared to curcumin solution on all serum levels of the investigated markers, sustaining its possible use as adjuvant therapy in DM.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is a key circulating enzyme converting angiotensin (Ang) I to the vasoactive peptide Ang II. The exact role of ACE insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism (rs106180) in psoriasis is not clear. We aimed to examine whether the ACE I/D and Ang II type 1 receptor (AT1R) A1166 C-polymorphisms (rs106165), lipid profile, and stress oxidative are associated with susceptibility to psoriasis. One hundred patients with psoriasis and 100 sex- and age-matched unrelated healthy controls were recruited for this case-control study. ACE I/D and AT1R A1166 C polymorphisms were identified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism, respectively, malondialdehyde (MDA) was detected by the high-performance liquid chromatography, serum arylesterase (ARE) activity of paraoxonase and catalase activities were detected by the spectrophotometry, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and vascular adhesion protein (VAP)-1 were measured by ELISA. The presence of C allele of AT1R A1166 C and I allele of ACE considerably increased the risk of psoriasis by 6.42-fold (P < 0.001). The distribution of II-genotype of ACE was significantly higher in psoriasis patients than in control group and increased the risk of disease by 3.11-times (P = 0.023). The higher levels of MDA in patients and the higher activity of SOD, ARE, and CAT was observed in healthy controls with I/D+I/I-genotype of ACE I/D. This study for the first time demonstrated that the ACE I/D and AT1R A 1166 C genes polymorphisms robustly increases the risk of developing psoriasis in population from west of Iran. In addition, these individuals had significantly higher VAP-1 and MDA concentration and lower enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant-status, suggesting that psoriatic patients carrying C allele of AT1R1166 polymorphism may be more susceptible to cardiovascular disease and myocardial infarction compared with A allele.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Addiction is a compulsive drug-seeking and drug-taking behavior. Reduction of high-risk behaviors can reduce the burden of addiction in society and can improve the overall prognosis of drug addiction. The aim of this study is to show that reduction of oxidative stress with socialization will reduce occurrence of high-risk behavior during addiction period. METHOD Fifty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups: socialized, isolated, addicted socialized and addicted isolated. For inducing morphine dependence, rats received morphine (5 mg/rat/kg/day) for 14 days. Socialization was induced by putting two rats in a large cage for 14 days. On the other hand, isolation was induced by putting rats in separate small cages covered with black plastic for the same period. At the end of the study, rats were experimented with shuttle box for assessing avoidance memory and also tested with social interaction test to measure noveltyseeking behavior and anxiety level. Then, animals were sacrificed for neurochemical analysis. Brain was isolated to assess oxidative-stress (OS) indices such as malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione and nitrite/nitrate in prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. RESULTS After 14 days of morphine injection, rats in socialized group had improved avoidance memory, increased anxiety levels and reduced novelty-seeking behavior. Furthermore, isolated rats had reduced glutathione and nitrite/nitrate, and higher MDA levels in prefrontal cortex and hippocampus as compared to socialized rats. CONCLUSION Pair state had positive effect on OS indices in prefrontal cortex and hippocampus and results in the reduction of relapse and poor prognosis. Thus, OS plays an important role in alleviation of severity of addiction period.

Abstract
Background The main aim of this study was to assess the serum levels of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) with lipid peroxidation, Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD) activity, and ceruloplasmin (Cp) in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Materials and methods The study was conducted in 34 MM patients at stage I. Serum Cu and Zn levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. Also, spectrophotometric assays of malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in addition to Cp and Cu/Zn SOD were quantitated. Results The results showed a significant decrease in the serum Zn levels in patients with MM (p < 0.0001). Also, serum Cu levels were significantly higher (p < 0.0001). However, the serum Cu/Zn ratio was significantly higher in the cancer patients (p < 0.0001). A significant difference was observed in the patients group compared with the control group according to the Cu/Zn SOD activity (p < 0.0001). Moreover, serum levels of Cp and MDA were significantly increased in patients (p < 0.0001, both). Conclusions The elevated levels of serum Cu and MDA with a decrease in Zn and Cu/Zn SOD might explain the increased oxidative stress in MM disease. As the high Cu level was observed in MM patients, therefore, Cu levels should be concentrated in the pathogenesis and progression of MM disease.

Abstract
Introduction: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is associated with critical kidney illness that seriously affects the lifespan. Genetic factors and oxidative stress could play critical role in the development of ESRD. We assessed the association between chemerin rs17173608 T/G and vaspin rs2236242 T/A genes variants with the risk of ESRD and their correlation with plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) level. Materials and methods: In a case-control study, 131 gender and age-matched unrelated healthy controls and 110 ESRD patients were enrolled. The chemerin rs17173608 T/G and vaspin rs2236242 T/A were detected by Tetra primer-amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction (T-ARMS-PCR). The MDA concentration was determined by HPLC. Results: Our findings for the first time revealed that in codominant genetic model (T/G vs. T/T genotype), the T/G genotype of chemerin gene significantly had a protective role against ESRD susceptibility. Also, in the presence of chemerin G allele, the risk of ESRD decreased by 0.79-fold (p = .048) in Kurdish population of Iran. The MDA serum levels in ESRD patients carrying the chemerin T/G + G/G genotype of rs17173608 T/G and also in carriers of A/A + T/A genotype of vaspin rs2236242 T/A were significantly higher compared to those in control subjects. The overall distribution of vaspin rs2236242 T/A genotypes and alleles comparing ESRD patients and healthy subjects were not statistically significant. Conclusion: We found that the G allele of chemerin rs17173608 compared to T allele decreased the risk of ESRD, and there was a significant association between chemerin and vaspin variants with plasma MDA level in a sample of the Iranian population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection causes elevation of lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) and this association may be due to the bacterium causing reactive oxygen species-mediated damage to DNA in the gastric epithelium. The aim of this study was to investigate the gastric juice MDA levels in relation to H. pylori infection and associated gastric diseases. METHODS Gastric juice samples were obtained from 117 patients undergoing endoscopy, and gastric juice MDA levels were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system. We compared the MDA levels between patients with and without H. pylori infection and assessed the differences of MDA levels between chronic gastritis, gastric intestinal metaplasia, and gastric cancer postsurgical resection. RESULTS Malondialdehyde levels in gastric juice were significantly higher in chronic gastritis patients with H. pylori infection than in those without H. pylori infection (P < .0001). In patients without H. pylori infection, patients with gastric intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer postsurgical resection had significantly higher gastric juice MDA level than patients with chronic gastritis. As a whole, patients with gastric intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer postsurgical resection also had significantly higher MDA levels in gastric juice as compared to patients with chronic gastritis (P < .01). However, the difference of gastric juice MDA levels between gastric intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer postsurgical resection was not significant. CONCLUSION Malondialdehyde in gastric juice could be used as a potential diagnostic biomarker for H. pylori infection and associated gastric diseases. The gastric juice MDA levels increased proportionally with the severity of gastric diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preventing liver damage that might lead to cirrhosis is very important in the early stages of injury to that organ. The role of mast cells (MCs) in liver injuries has been long debated, and vitamin E is a well-known antioxidant used to treat those injuries. This study aimed to determine the protective role of vitamin E on MCs in injury to the liver that is triggered by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). There is a correlation between MC deposits and improvement in fibrosis tissues. METHODS To further examine this, 68 male Albino Wistar rats were divided randomly into five groups: the control group, the vitamin E group, the CCl4 group, the CCl4 + vitamin E group, and the vitamin E + CCl4 group. Malondialdehyde (MDA) analysis, MC counts, histopathological investigation, and statistical analyses were used to evaluate the findings. RESULTS The administration of CCl4 resulted in an increase in the accumulation of MCs, degenerative parenchyma cells, MDA level, steatosis and inflammation. Additionally, proliferation of the bile ducts in the portal area and porto-portal and porto-central fibrosis were observed in the CCl4 group. In contrast, in the vitamin E group and in the groups administered a combination of vitamin E and CCl4, vitamin E prevented these increases. CONCLUSION It was concluded that the significant decrease in the MC counts, in the level of MDA and the number of degenerative cells, as well as a decrease in the steatosis and inflammation scores showed that vitamin E could prevent liver injuries by protecting the organ's histological architecture. Finally, the results indicate that vitamin E has positive effects on liver injuries.

Abstract
Some deleterious effects of drought, soil salinity and other abiotic stresses are mediated by the generation of oxidative stress through an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage cellular membranes, proteins and DNA. In response to increased ROS, plants activate an array of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defences. We have correlated the activation of these responses with the contrasting tolerance to salinity and drought of three species of the genus Juncus, viz. J. maritimus, J. acutus (both halophytes) and J. articulatus (salt-sensitive). Both stresses were given for 8 weeks to 6-week-old seedlings in a controlled environment chamber. Each stress inhibited growth and degraded photosynthetic pigments in the three species with the most pronounced effects being in J. articulatus. Salt and water stress also generated oxidative stress in all three taxa with J. articulatus being the most affected in terms of accumulation of malondialdehyde (a reliable oxidative stress marker). The apparent lower oxidative stress in halophytic J. maritimus and J. acutus compared with salt-sensitive J. articulatus is explained by a more efficient activation of antioxidant systems since salt or water deficiency induced a stronger accumulation of antioxidant phenolic compounds and flavonoids in J. maritimus and J. acutus than in J. articulatus. Qualitative and quantitative differences in antioxidant enzymes were also detected when comparing the three species and the two stress treatments. Accordingly, glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase activities increased in the two halophytes under both stresses, but only in response to drought in J. articulatus. In contrast, ascorbate peroxidase activity varied between and within species according to treatment. These results show the relative importance of different antioxidant responses for stress tolerance in species with distinct ecological requirements. The salt-sensitive J. articulatus, contrary to the tolerant taxa, did not activate enzymatic antioxidant responses to salinity-induced oxidative stress.

Abstract
Background: Brickfield workers in India perform manual materials handling (MMH) and as a result, are at a high risk of developing oxidative stress. This results in an alteration of the various markers of metabolic oxidative stress at the cellular level. Since red blood cell (RBC) is the central point where oxygen, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD), and glutathione (GSH) are involved, the surface roughness and its alteration and modeling with respect to workers exposed to MMH may be considered as helpful determinants in predicting early damage to the cell and restoring better health to the exposed population, that is, the worker exposed to stress. Hence, nanometric analysis of the surface roughness of the RBC may serve as an early indicator of the stress-related damage in these individuals. Aims: The purpose of the study was to identify early red blood corpuscular surface damage profile in terms of linear modeling correlating various biochemical parameters. Linear modeling has been aimed to be developed in order to demonstrate how individual oxidative stress markers such as malondialdehyde (MDA), G-6-PD, and reduced GSH are related to the RBC surface roughness [root mean square (RMS)]. Materials and Methods: Conventional analysis of these biochemical responses were evaluated in MMH laborers (age varying between 18 years and 21 years) and a comparable control group of the same age group (with sedentary lifestyles). Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and RBC surface analysis by atomic-force microscopy (AFM) and correlated scanning probe microscopy (SPM-analytical software) with corresponding image analysis were performed immediately after completion of standardized exercise (MMH) at the brickfield. Results: A number of correlated significances and regressive linear models were developed among MDA, G-6-PD, GSH, and RBC surface roughness. Conclusion: It appears that these linear models might be instrumental in predicting early oxidative damages related to specific occupational hazards.

Abstract
Conditions experienced during juvenile development can affect the fitness of an organism. During early life, oxidative stress levels can be particularly high as a result of the increased metabolism and the relatively immature antioxidant system of the individual, and this may have medium- and long-term fitness consequences. Here we explore variation in levels of oxidative stress measured during early life in relation to sex, rearing conditions (hatching date and brood size), and parental condition and levels of oxidative markers in a wild population of the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) followed for 2 yr. A marker of total antioxidant status (TAS) in plasma and total levels of glutathione (GSH) in red blood cells, as well as a marker of oxidative damage in plasma lipids (malondialdehyde [MDA]), were assessed simultaneously. Our results show that nestling total GSH levels were associated with parental oxidative status, correlating negatively with maternal MDA and positively with total GSH levels of both parents, with a high estimated heritability. This suggests that parental physiology and genes could be determinants for endogenous components of the antioxidant system of the offspring. Moreover, we found that total GSH levels were higher in female than in male nestlings and that hatching date was positively associated with antioxidant defenses (higher TAS and total GSH levels). These results suggest that different components of oxidative balance are related to a variety of environmental and intrinsic--including parental--influencing factors. Future experimental studies must disentangle the relative contribution of each of these on nestling oxidative status and how the resulting oxidative stress at early phases shape adult phenotype and fitness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Formation of Malondialdehyde (MDA), a free radical, in Tuberculosis patients does occur when Tubercule bacilli induces reactive oxygen species as a result of phagocytic respiratory burst. OBJECTIVES This study evaluated the effect of treatment on plasma level of Malondialdehyde among patients infected with Mycobacterium Tuberculosis in Osogbo South Western Nigeria. METHODOLOGY Descriptive cross sectional study among 110 patients, grouped into four categories (three TB patient categories and controls). All patients were screened for presence or absence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in their sputum and HIV 1 & 2 in their blood using standard techniques. The level of free radical (Malondialdehyde, MDA) was determined by Thiobabituric acid reacting method. Data was analyzed using the SPSS software version 17.0. RESULTS Serum Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly lower in TB patients on drugs (TBD) compared with the new cases on treatment (NCT). (0.17+0.88mol/L Vs 0.27+0.08mol/L, p<0.05). Varying degrees of correlations were also found between free radicals and electrolytes. CONCLUSION Reduced serum MDA levels in TBD suggested a reduction in the levels of free radical injury once treatment was commenced. Therefore serum free radical may be an index of monitoring response to treatment in tuberculosis management.

Abstract
In rice (Oryza sativa L.), chilling-induced male sterility increased when plants experienced low water temperature (Tw , 18 °C for 14 d) before panicle initiation. The number of mature pollen grains after chilling at the booting stage (12 °C for 5 d) was only 45% of total pollen grains in low-Tw plants, whereas it was 71% in normal-Tw plants (Tw not controlled; approximately 23 °C under air temperature of 26 °C/21 °C, day/night). Microarray and quantitative PCR analyses showed that many stress-responsive genes (including OsFKBP65 and genes encoding the large heat shock protein OsHSP90.1, heat-stress transcription factors and many small heat shock proteins) were strongly up-regulated by chilling in normal-Tw spikelets, but were unaffected or even down-regulated by chilling in low-Tw spikelets. OsAPX2 and genes encoding some other antioxidant enzymes were also significantly down-regulated by low Tw in chilled spikelets. The levels of lipid peroxidation products (malondialdehyde equivalents) were significantly increased in low-Tw spikelets by chilling. Ascorbate peroxidase activity in chilled spikelets was significantly lower in low-Tw plants than in normal-Tw plants. Our data suggest that an OsFKBP65-related chilling response, which protects proteins from oxidative damage, is indispensable for chilling tolerance but is lost in low-Tw spikelets.

Abstract
Chronic gastritis associated with H. pylori infection causes oxidative stress in the stomach. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of coenzyme q10 among gastric patients infected by H. pylori. By a clinical trial, chronic gastric patients infected by H. pylori were randomly divided into 2 groups: intervention and placebo. The placebo group received a standard triple therapy regimen, and the intervention group received the triple regimen + coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Mean inflammation score; serum levels of 3 serum markers were then compared. A total of 100 participants of whom 67% were female were evaluated. The mean age of participants was 59.4 ± 11.4 years. The mean inflammation score was considerably decreased at the end of the study, in the intervention group. The mean levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) at the end of the study were reduced among the triple therapy group (P < .05, P =.03 respectively). The mean levels of TAC and GPx were significantly higher among the intervention group at the end of the study compared with those at the start of the study. The combination of triple therapy with CoQ10 demonstrated an effective outcome on the mucosal inflammation, and stress oxidative in patients with chronic gastritis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of green tea extract (GTE) supplementation combined with endurance training on endurance capacity and performance in sedentary men. Forty untrained men (age: 20 ± 1 years) participated in this study. Subjects were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: (i) placebo-control (CTRL), (ii) GTE, (iii) endurance training (Ex), and (iv) endurance training with GTE (ExGTE). During the 4-week intervention, exercise training was prescribed as 75% oxygen uptake reserve for three 20-min sessions per week, and either GTE (250 mg/day) or placebo was provided. Endurance capacity, malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant status (TAS), and creatine kinase (CK) were examined. Ex and ExGTE but not GTE improved exhaustive-run time (Ex: +8.2%, p = 0.031; ExGTE: +14.3%, p < 0.001); in addition, Ex and ExGTE significantly increased maximal oxygen uptake by ∼14% (p = 0.041) and ∼17% (p = 0.017) above the values of the CTRL group, respectively. Both Ex and ExGTE significantly decreased the increase of CK by ∼11%-32% below that of CTRL following an exhaustive run (Ex: p = 0.007; ExGTE: p = 0.001). Moreover, TAS levels increased by ∼11% in ExGTE after training (p = 0.040), and GTE, Ex, and ExGTE markedly attenuated exercise-induced MDA production (p = 0.01, p = 0.005, p = 0.011, respectively). In conclusion, this investigation demonstrated that daily ingestion of GTE during endurance training does not impair improvements in endurance capacity. Moreover, endurance training combined with GTE not only increases antioxidant capacity without attenuating endurance training adaptations, but also further attenuates acute exercise-induced CK release.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The products of lipids oxidation: peroxides, hydroxides, aldehydes, ketones, esters, alcohols and others show harmful activity against human organism. Presence of the compounds in baby's and children's food creates potential health hazard. Many of them cause infant's and children's diarrhoea, also, negatively influence development of nervous system, show cytotoxic, mutagenic and cancerogenic activity (e.g. malonicdialdehyde, 4-hydroxynonenal and others). AIM The aim of the work was to assess the level of lipids peroxidation in milk substitute preparations for initial stage baby feeding, before their end of shelf-life. MATERIALS AND METHODS The level of lipids peroxidation measured as TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) concentrations was determined in 6 available on the Polish market milk substitute infant formulas. The determinations was carried out before the end of the shelf-life after 1,2,3,6,9 and 12 months after purchase. The level of lipid peroxidation was also determined after 3-4 and 21 days post opening. RESULTS TBARS content in the infants food ready to be eaten depended on the time of preparation storage. The highest level of lipids peroxidation was observed in all the studied food after 12 months of storage and after 21 days after opening of the hermetical wrapping. Various level of lipids peroxidation in milk substitutes for infant nutrition resulted from different amounts and quality of plant oils used in production (different content of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, presence of lack of linoleic and α-linolenic acids).

Abstract
Spices are rich in natural antioxidants and have been shown to be potent inhibitors of lipid peroxidation during cooking of meat. Turmeric contains unique conjugated curcuminoids with strong antioxidant activity. Piperine, one of the main constituents of black pepper, is known to increase the bioavailability of curcuminoids in mouse and human studies when consumed with turmeric. We investigated whether adding black pepper to turmeric powder may further inhibit lipid peroxidation when added to meat patties prior to cooking. The addition of black pepper to turmeric significantly decreased the lipid peroxidation in hamburger meat. When investigating the antioxidant activity of the main chemical markers, we determined that piperine did not exhibit any antioxidant activity. Therefore, we conclude that other black pepper ingredients are responsible for the increased antioxidant activity of combining black pepper with turmeric powder.

Abstract
Acute strenuous exercise can induce a state of oxidative stress affecting the involved muscles. Heptathlon is a multi-event exercise of two days duration and can be considered an acute, intensive endurance exercise. The purpose of this study is to compare the oxidative stress response to heptathlon events day by day and to determine the impact of this type of exercise on oxidative stress biomarkers. The study subjects included eight heptathlon athletes who participated in the National First Class Republic competition in Egypt (October 19–21, 2011). Blood samples were collected at rest after exercise for two successive days and analyzed for malondialdehyde (MDA). Morning urine samples were collected one hour after exercise for each day and were analyzed for 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). Results revealed a significant increase (p<0.05) in both plasma MDA and urine 8-OHdG levels after exercise regardless of the day. We concluded that exercise generates higher MDA levels compared to DNA strand breaks and oxidative DNA damage in athletes with antioxidant supplementation.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate whether the fatty acid composition could make a significant contribution to the oxidation stability of vegetable oils marketed in Korea. Ten kinds, 97 items of vegetable oils that were produced in either an industrialized or a traditional way were collected and analyzed for their fatty acid compositions and lipid oxidation products, in the absence or presence of oxidative stress. Peroxidability index (PI) calculations based on the fatty acid composition ranged from 7.10 to 111.87 with the lowest value found in olive oils and the highest in perilla oils. In the absence of induced oxidative stress, malondialdehyde (MDA), the secondary lipid oxidation product, was generated more in the oils with higher PI (r=0.890), while the tendency was not observed when the oils were subjected to an oxidation-accelerating system. In the presence of the oxidative stress, the perilla oils produced in an industrialized manner generated appreciably higher amounts of MDA than those produced in a traditional way, although both types of oils presented similar PIs. The results implicate that the fatty acid compositions could be a predictor for the oxidation stability of the vegetable oils at the early stage of oil oxidation, but not for those at a later stage of oxidation.

Abstract
Lactuca sativa, belonging to the Asteraceae family, is a leafy vegetable known for its medicinal properties. This study aimed to understand the mechanism of Lactuca sativa extract with respect to pharmacological action.We investigated the anxiolytic effects of hydro-alcoholic extract of leaves of Lactuca sativa on mice. The behavioral tests performed on mice models to assess anti-anxiety properties were: open field test (OFT), elevated plus maze test (EPM), elevated T maze test, and marble burying test. Increased locomotor activity and time spent in the "open-arm" were observed in extract fed group. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitrite levels were decreased, catalase and glutathione levels were increased in Lactuca sativa treated mice. The data obtained in the present study suggests that the extract of Lactuca sativa can afford significant protection against anxiolytic activity.
