Development of blended learning model integrated nursing leadership training using web-based in Indonesia

BACKGROUND

Nurse managers are the frontline leaders in the ward that directly impact the quality of care services. Many nurse managers in Indonesia were inadequately prepared to fulfill this role, especially during this crisis. The objective was to develop blended learning an Integrated Nursing Leadership Training (INLeT) using web based and test the effectiveness.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This research is a research development using modified Borg and Gall by researcher, namely, Planning, Redesign, Intervention, Modify, and Evaluation. The INLET model was validated by nine experts in health and media technology design. Data were tested using quasi-experiment research in Sanglah General Hospital and Wangaya Public Hospital in Bali.

RESULTS

The results of analysis of the content validity of all items valued V index 0.96 (high category) from design experts and V Index 0.92 (high category from health experts. The experiment group obtained N Gain scored 0.5603 at medium level, and the control group result of N Gain Score was 0.2845 in the low-level category. Using t-test, both the experiment and control group showed significant improvement of score test with P = 0.000 (P < 0.005). Bivariate analysis using independent t-test result P = 0.000 (P < 0.005) means significant difference score test compared between experiment and control group.

CONCLUSIONS

Using the web, this blended learning INLeT Model is effectively applied for nurse manager professional development; therefore, this study can prepare nurse managers into a leadership role by integrating moodle web-based into nursing training.

Explaining faculty members’ behavioral intention to use learning management systems

Utilizing learning management system (LMS) in higher education and the factors could explain it is an emerging research field. Limited research has investigated factors influencing the adoption of LMS as a distinct system of e-learning as well as these studies mainly investigate the determinants of intention to use LMS from students and less from the point of view of the university instructors. This study investigates the factors that explain LMS acceptance from the faculty members. A version of the technology acceptance model including five external factors (perceived self-efficacy, subjective norm, image, technological complexity, and facilitating conditions) is proposed. The sample consists of 378 faculty members from 20 universities of Greece who declared to use LMS. A variance-based structural equation modeling was applied and ten out of thirteen hypotheses were confirmed. The total explained variance of behavioral intention to use LMS is estimated at 73%. Attitudes toward use, perceived usefulness, perceived easy of use, technological complexity, perceived self-efficacy, and subjective norm are the main determinants of faculty members’ behavioral intention to use LMS. Implications for training, educational policy, as well as the design and/or use of educational information systems are discussed.

What Does the Future Hold for a Surgical Trainee? This Lockdown Is Not a Letdown Yet: A Survey on Moodle Learning Management System as a Part of Blended Learning During COVID-19 Pandemic

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a major shift in the educational training of surgical trainees. As the Lockdown was implemented and the daily workforce reduced, an alternate method was employed to provide uninterrupted learning. Blended learning that includes virtual learning with face-to-face learning/teaching was utilized for the surgical trainees. MOODLE (Modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment), an open-source learning management system, was integrated as an Online Component of our Blended Learning Program. We aimed to evaluate the perception of postgraduate trainees of General Surgery regarding the benefits and limitations of Blended Learning, particularly its online component, i.e., Moodle LMS, for the betterment of surgical -education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Material and Methods

Thirty-three postgraduate general surgery trainees were enrolled in a blended learning program, in which its online component, Moodle LMS, comprised four major topics on General Surgery. A questionnaire was provided to the trainees to obtain feedback on blended learning in general, and Moodle LMS was mainly themed on the Likert scale.

Results

The approach of blended learning was positively received by the participants, the majority of whom were females (75%) and comprising of Year 1 residents (33.3%). Nearly half of the participants found Moodle LMS user-friendly, practical and a good platform for learning. However, nearly two thirds (60.6%) were uncertain if it ever helped in applying knowledge to interpret laboratory and radiological results for patient management. Even then, most of them found that the face-to-face component of blended learning helped them develop specific clinical and surgical skills (42.4%). Emphatically, 78.7% would recommend it for surgical training.

Conclusion

Blended learning was found to be beneficial in the training process of surgical postgraduates in the current COVID-19 pandemic situation. We recommend it for the training of doctors for optimized learning.

Teaching clinical practical and communication skills of the clinical skills lab of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation, Germany during the COVID-19 pandemic

Objective: The aim of the project is to teach clinical practical and communication skills in the Clinical Skills Lab (CSL) of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Foundation (TiHo) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: As a measure to limit potential SARS-CoV2 infections, the CSL learning stations were digitised and made available on the Moodle learning platform of the TiHo. Online quiz stations were also developed, as well as improvisations that allowed students to practise practical skills at home using everyday materials. Courses for Practical Year (PY) students were digitised and again combined with classroom exercises throughout the year. The teaching formats could be evaluated by the students by means of a questionnaire using a Likert scale (1=agree; 4=disagree). Results: A total of 24.92% of students (n=1272) completed the learning stations with improvisations. The quiz stations were completed with a percentage of 75.08%. Students indicated that the improvisations were easily implementable from home (M=1.33) and assisted in learning the practical skills in question (M=1.89). The quiz stations were considered helpful (M=1.40) and complementary to previous CSL offers (M=1.13). The PY students found the amount of teaching materials adequate (M=1.76) and described communication with the lecturers as problem-free (compulsory electives=1.24). Conclusions: Digital teaching is suitable as a supplement to existing face-to-face courses at the CSL, but cannot replace on-site training under the guidance of trained personnel. The CSL will continue to strive for a combination of online and face-to-face courses for some learning stations in the future.

Die Evaluationsergebnisse zeigen, dass die Zufriedenheit und der Lernwert der Studierenden hoch ist. Zudem werden weitere methodische Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten vorgestellt und diskutiert.
