Hyperbolic Polaritonic Rulers Based on van der Waals α-MoO3 Waveguides and Resonators

Low-dimensional, strongly anisotropic nanomaterials can support hyperbolic phonon polaritons, which feature strong light-matter interactions that can enhance their capabilities in sensing and metrology tasks. In this work, we report hyperbolic polaritonic rulers, based on microscale α-phase molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO3) waveguides and resonators suspended over an ultraflat gold substrate, which exhibit near-field polaritonic characteristics that are exceptionally sensitive to device geometry. Using scanning near-field optical microscopy, we show that these systems support strongly confined image polariton modes that exhibit ideal antisymmetric gap polariton dispersion, which is highly sensitive to air gap dimensions and can be described and predicted using a simple analytic model. Dielectric constants used for modeling are accurately extracted using near-field optical measurements of α-MoO3 waveguides in contact with the gold substrate. We also find that for nanoscale resonators supporting in-plane Fabry-Perot modes, the mode order strongly depends on the air gap dimension in a manner that enables a simple readout of the gap dimension with nanometer precision.

Ultrahigh-Quality Infrared Polaritonic Resonators Based on Bottom-Up-Synthesized van der Waals Nanoribbons

van der Waals nanomaterials supporting phonon polariton quasiparticles possess extraordinary light confinement capabilities, making them ideal systems for molecular sensing, thermal emission, and subwavelength imaging applications, but they require defect-free crystallinity and nanostructured form factors to fully showcase these capabilities. We introduce bottom-up-synthesized α-MoO₃ structures as nanoscale phonon polaritonic systems that feature tailorable morphologies and crystal qualities consistent with bulk single crystals. α-MoO₃ nanoribbons serve as low-loss hyperbolic Fabry-Pérot nanoresonators, and we experimentally map hyperbolic resonances over four Reststrahlen bands spanning the far- and mid-infrared spectral range, including resonance modes beyond the 10th order. The measured quality factors are the highest from phonon polaritonic van der Waals structures to date. We anticipate that bottom-up-synthesized polaritonic van der Waals nanostructures will serve as an enabling high-performance and low-loss platform for infrared optical and optoelectronic applications.

Enhancing Magnetic Light Emission with All-Dielectric Optical Nanoantennas

Electric and magnetic optical fields carry the same amount of energy. Nevertheless, the efficiency with which matter interacts with electric optical fields is commonly accepted to be at least 4 orders of magnitude higher than with magnetic optical fields. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that properly designed photonic nanoantennas can selectively manipulate the magnetic versus electric emission of luminescent nanocrystals. In particular, we show selective enhancement of magnetic emission from trivalent europium-doped nanoparticles in the vicinity of a nanoantenna tailored to exhibit a magnetic resonance. Specifically, by controlling the spatial coupling between emitters and an individual nanoresonator located at the edge of a near-field optical scanning tip, we record with nanoscale precision local distributions of both magnetic and electric radiative local densities of states (LDOS). The map of the radiative LDOS reveals the modification of both the magnetic and electric quantum environments induced by the presence of the nanoantenna. This manipulation and enhancement of magnetic light-matter interaction by means of nanoantennas opens up new possibilities for the research fields of optoelectronics, chiral optics, nonlinear and nano-optics, spintronics, and metamaterials, among others.

Conformation and dynamics of single polymer chain studied by optical microscopy techniques beyond the diffraction limit

The origin of the unique properties of a polymer material is the large entropic term of a single molecule, which has a chain-like structure with a large molecular weight. From the viewpoint of understanding the fundamental polymer physics, conformation of the single polymer chain is one of the most important matters; however, it has been difficult to examine the behavior of a single chain because of the limitation of conventional experimental methods. Recent developments in optical microscopy allow the fluorescence imaging beyond the diffraction limit of light, and the author's group showed that the conformation and the dynamics of a single polymer chain can be examined by the high-resolution fluorescence imaging. This review presents the application of optical microscopy with nanometric spatial resolution to study the polymer materials at the single-chain level.

Gate-Tunable Spatial Modulation of Localized Plasmon Resonances

We demonstrate localization and field-effect spatial control of the plasmon resonance in semiconductor nanostructures, using scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy in the mid-infrared region. We adopt InAs nanowires embedding a graded doping profile to modulate the free carrier density along the axial direction. Our near-field measurements have a spatial resolution of 20 nm and demonstrate the presence of a local resonant feature whose position can be controlled by a back-gate bias voltage. In the present implementation, field-effect induces a modulation of the free carrier density profile yielding a spatial shift of the plasmon resonance of the order of 100 nm. We discuss the relevance of our electrically tunable nanoplasmonic architectures in view of innovative optoelectronic devices concepts.

Ultralow-Loss CMOS Copper Plasmonic Waveguides

Surface plasmon polaritons can give a unique opportunity to manipulate light at a scale well below the diffraction limit reducing the size of optical components down to that of nanoelectronic circuits. At the same time, plasmonics is mostly based on noble metals, which are not compatible with microelectronics manufacturing technologies. This prevents plasmonic components from integration with both silicon photonics and silicon microelectronics. Here, we demonstrate ultralow-loss copper plasmonic waveguides fabricated in a simple complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatible process, which can outperform gold plasmonic waveguides simultaneously providing long (>40 μm) propagation length and deep subwavelength (∼λ(2)/50, where λ is the free-space wavelength) mode confinement in the telecommunication spectral range. These results create the backbone for the development of a CMOS plasmonic platform and its integration in future electronic chips.

Experimental Realization of Two Decoupled Directional Couplers in a Subwavelength Packing by Adiabatic Elimination

On-chip optical data processing and photonic quantum integrated circuits require the integration of densely packed directional couplers at the nanoscale. However, the inherent evanescent coupling at this length scale severely limits the compactness of such on-chip photonic circuits. Here, inspired by the adiabatic elimination in a N-level atomic system, we report an experimental realization of a pair of directional couplers that are effectively isolated from each other despite their subwavelength packing. This approach opens the way to ultradense arrays of waveguide couplers for integrated optical and quantum logic gates.

Observation of Plasmon Wave Packet Motions via Femtosecond Time-Resolved Near-Field Imaging Techniques

The generation and dynamics of plasmon wave packets in single gold nanorods were observed at a spatiotemporal scale of 100 nm and 10 fs via time-resolved near-field optical microscopy. Following simultaneous excitation of two plasmon modes of a nanorod with an ultrashort near-field pulse, a decay and revival feature of the time-resolved signal was obtained, which reflected the reciprocating motion of the wave packet. The time-resolved near-field images were also indicative of the wave packet motion. At some period of time after the excitation, the spatial features of the two modes appeared alternately, showing motion of plasmonic wave crests along the rod. The wave packet propagation was clearly demonstrated from this observation with the aid of a simulation model. The present experimental scheme opens the door to coherent control of plasmon-induced optical fields in a nanometer spatial scale and femtosecond temporal scale.

Revealing Optical Properties of Reduced-Dimensionality Materials at Relevant Length Scales

Reduced-dimensionality materials for photonic and optoelectronic applications including energy conversion, solid-state lighting, sensing, and information technology are undergoing rapid development. The search for novel materials based on reduced-dimensionality is driven by new physics. Understanding and optimizing material properties requires characterization at the relevant length scale, which is often below the diffraction limit. Three important material systems are chosen for review here, all of which are under investigation at the Molecular Foundry, to illustrate the current state of the art in nanoscale optical characterization: 2D semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides; 1D semiconducting nanowires; and energy-transfer in assemblies of 0D semiconducting nanocrystals. For each system, the key optical properties, the principal experimental techniques, and important recent results are discussed. Applications and new developments in near-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and cathodoluminescence in the electron microscope are given detailed attention. Work done at the Molecular Foundry is placed in context within the fields under review. A discussion of emerging opportunities and directions for the future closes the review.

Oxidation sharpening, template stripping, and passivation of ultra-sharp metallic pyramids and wedges

Ultra-sharp metallic pyramids and wedges with tunable tip angles and 5-nm tip radii are replicated from oxidation-sharpened silicon templates with high throughput (80 million pyramids per wafer). Atomic layer deposition of Al2 O3 shells can protect these sharp pyramidal tips for subsequent usage in near-field imaging.
