Full-Matrix Imaging in Fourier Domain towards Ultrasonic Inspection with Wide-Angle Oblique Incidence for Welded Structures

The total focusing method (TFM) has been increasingly applied to weld inspection given its high image quality and defect sensitivity. Oblique incidence is widely used to steer the beam effectively, considering the defect orientation and structural complexity of welded structures. However, the conventional TFM based on the delay-and-sum (DAS) principle is time-consuming, especially for oblique incidence. In this paper, a fast full-matrix imaging algorithm in the Fourier domain is proposed to accelerate the TFM under the condition of oblique incidence. The algorithm adopts the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind to directly expand the Fourier extrapolator with lateral sound velocity variation. The direct expansion maintains image accuracy and resolution in wide-angle situations, covering both small and large angles, making it highly suitable for weld inspection. Simulations prove that the third-order Chebyshev expansion is required to achieve image accuracy equivalent to the TFM with wide-angle incidence. Experiments verify the algorithm's performance for weld flaws using the proposed method with the transverse wave and the full-skip mode. The depth deviation is within 0.53 mm, and the sizing error is below 15%. The imaging efficiency is improved by a factor of up to 8 compared to conventional TFM. We conclude that the proposed method is applicable to high-speed weld inspection with various oblique incidence angles.

Enhanced second harmonic generation from a quasi-periodic silver dendritic metasurface

The preparation of the vast majority of nonlinear optical metal metasurfaces currently relies on complex top-down methods such as electron beam or ion beam etching, which are expensive and difficult to meet the requirement of large area preparation. In this paper, an easily prepared quasi-periodic silver dendritic metasurface model with highQfactor is established in the near-infrared band based on a simple and easy-to-operate electrochemical deposition method. The simulations prove that the silver dendritic metasurface has a highQfactor (exceeds 104) because of its strong electric field localization ability, which is analogous to the superposition of multiple split-ring resonators. It is demonstrated that the second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity of the dendritic metasurface at a large incident angle (such as 85°) is about 30 times that of the metasurface at a small incident angle when thex-polarized pump light is incident obliquely to break the centrosymmetry of the metasurface. The influences of the incident angle or dendritic structure's dimensions on theQfactor and SHG efficiency have also been researched through a lot of simulation. This easily prepared quasi-periodic silver dendritic metasurface SHG device may provide a new avenue for the development and application of miniature, integratable nonlinear optical devices.

Angular Control of Circularly Polarized Emission from Achiral Molecules via Magnetic Dipoles Sustained in a Chiral Metamirror

Circularly polarized emission (CPE) plays an important role in the designs of advanced displays and photonic integrated circuits. Unfortunately, the control of CPE handedness is limited by the chiral metasurfaces employed to emit chiral light. Particularly, the switching of the handedness with chiral metasurfaces relies on flipping the metasurfaces, which adds some constraints to practical applications. Herein, we propose an angle-sensitive chiral metamirror with Mie resonators to realize handedness switching. The Mie resonator supports a magnetic dipole having large field enhancement. This chiral metamirror is applied to excite CPEs with opposite handedness at emission angles within 10°. In contrast to the conventional methods, this work proposes a more efficient approach to manipulate the handedness of CPE.

Funneling of Oblique Incident Light through Subwavelength Metallic Slits

Light funneling determines how enhanced energy flows into subwavelength slits. In contrast to the previous research on oblique incident light, this study reveals that light funneling in the slits can be highly asymmetric, even at small angles. This mechanism is explained by polarized fields and charges, which are induced using Poynting vectors. It is shown that when light is obliquely incident to the slits perforated in a perfect electric conductor, asymmetrical fields and charges accumulate at the upper apex corners of the left (right) sides. When light is incident from the left (right) side, more (less) induced fields and charges accumulate in the left (right) slit corner so that the funneling width, area, and energy flow at the left (right) side increases (decreases).

Bilayer graphene in strong ultrafast laser fields

We theoretically investigate the interaction of an ultrastrong femtosecond-long linearly polarized optical pulse with AB-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG). The pulse excite electrons from the valence into the conduction band (CB), resulting in finite CB population. Such a redistribution of electrons results in the generation of current which can be manipulated by the angle of incidence of the pulse. For the normal incidence, the current along a direction transverse to the polarization of the optical pulse is zero. However, the interlayer symmetry is broken up by a finite angle of incidence due to which BLG possesses a single axis of symmetry. Thus, for an oblique incidence, if the pulse is polarized normal to the symmetry axis then there is an induction of electric current in the direction perpendicular to the polarization of the pulse. We show that the magnitude and the direction of such a current as well as charge transfer along this direction can be manipulated by tuning the angle of incidence of the laser pulse. Further, the symmetry of the system prohibits the generation of transverse current if the pulse is polarized along the axis of symmetry of BLG.

Negative reflection and negative surface wave conversion from obliquely incident electromagnetic waves

Complete control of spatially propagating waves (PWs) and surface waves (SWs) is an ultimate goal that scientists and engineers seek for, in which negative reflection of PW and negative surface wave are two exotic phenomena. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an anisotropic digital coding metasurface capable of controlling both PWs and SWs with a single coding pattern. On the basis of the digital description of coding metasurfaces, a simple coding method is proposed to allow dual functionalities (either PW or SW manipulations) under two orthogonal polarizations at arbitrarily oblique incidences, thus improving the adaptability of digital coding metasurfaces in more practical circumstances. With elaborately designed ellipse-shaped coding particles, we experimentally demonstrate various functions under oblique incidences, including the negative reflection of PW, negative SW, anomalous reflection and their arbitrary combinations, all having good agreements with theoretical and numerical predictions. We believe that the proposed method may enable the digital coding metasurfaces to have broad applications in radar detections, wireless communications and imaging.

Microwave Imaging under Oblique Illumination

Microwave imaging based on inverse scattering problem has been attracting many interests in the microwave society. Among some major technical challenges, the ill-posed, multi-dimensional inversion algorithm and the complicated measurement setup are critical ones that prevent it from practical applications. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the performance of the subspace-based optimization method (SOM) for two-dimensional objects when it was applied to a setup designed for oblique incidence. Analytical, simulation, and experimental results show that, for 2D objects, neglecting the cross-polarization scattering will not cause a notable loss of information. Our method can be potentially used in practical imaging applications for 2D-like objects, such as human limbs.

High-Transmission-Efficiency and Side-Viewing Micro OIDRS Probe for Fast and Minimally-Invasive Tumor Margin Detection

The determination of a cancer free margin I organs is a difficult and time consuming process, with an unmet need for rapid determination of tumor margin at surgery. In this paper, we report the design, fabrication and testing of a novel miniaturized optical sensor probe with "side-viewing" capability. Its unprecedented small size, unique "side-viewing" capability and high optical transmission efficiency enable the agile maneuvering and efficient data collection even in the narrow cavities inside the human body. The sensor probe consists of four micromachined substrates with optical fibers for oblique light incidence and collection of spatially resolved diffuse reflectance from the contacted tissues. The optical sensor probe has been used to conduct the oblique incidence diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (OIDRS) on a human pancreatic specimen. Based on the measurement results, the margin of the malignant tumor has been successfully determined optically, which matches well with the histological results.

Micromachined "Side-Viewing" Optical Sensor Probe for Detection of Esophageal Cancers

In this paper, we report the design, fabrication and testing of a new miniaturized optical sensor probe with "side viewing" capability for oblique incidence diffuse reflectance spectrometry. The sensor probe consists of a lithographically patterned polymer waveguides chip and two micromachined positioning substrates and source/collection fibers to achieve 45° light incidence and collection of spatially resolved diffuse reflectance. Diffuse reflectance of human esophageal surface has been successfully measured for differentiation of cancerous tissues from normal ones.
