First Demonstration of Yttria-Stabilized Hafnia-Based Long-Retention Solid-State Electrolyte-Gated Transistor for Human-Like Neuromorphic Computing

Electrolyte-gated transistors have strong potential for high-performance artificial synapses in neuromorphic bio-interfaces owing to their outstanding synaptic characteristics, low power consumption, and human-like mechanisms. However, the short retention time is a hurdle to overcome owing to the natural diffusion of protons. Here, a novel modulation technique of ionic conductivity is proposed with yttria-stabilized hafnia for the first time to enhance the retention characteristic of a solid-state electrolyte-gated transistor-based artificial synapse. With the optimization of the ionic conductivity in yttria-stabilized hafnia, a high retention time of over 300 s and remarkable synaptic characteristics are accomplished by regulating channel conductance with precise modulation of the strength of the proton-electron coupling intensity along the input signals. Furthermore, pattern recognition simulation is conducted based on the measured synaptic characteristics, exhibiting 94.41% of operation accuracy, which implies a promising solution for neuromorphic in-memory computing systems with a high operation accuracy and low power consumption.

Improvement of electrothermal and photothermal properties of ultra-thin graphite film on oxygen plasma-treated polyimide substrate

Graphene and its derivatives are widely used in the field of energy conversion and management due to their excellent physical and chemical properties. In this paper, ultra-thin graphite film (GF) with thickness of 100-150 nm prepared by chemical vapor deposition was transferred to oxygen plasma-treated polyimide (PI) substrate as flexible heating film. The electrothermal and photothermal properties of GF on PI substrates with different treatment time were studied. The experimental results show that the PI substrate pretreated by oxygen plasma can change the surface morphology of GF, increase its electrical conductivity and light absorption capacity, and significantly improve the electrothermal and photothermal properties of GF heater. Under the low applied voltage of 5 V (power density of 0.81 W cm-2), the surface temperature of GF on 40 min plasma-treated PI substrate can rise to 250 °C, which is nearly 50 °C higher than that of GF on untreated PI substrate. When 100 nm thick commercial multilayer graphene film (MLG) is used, plasma-treated PI substrate can increase the electric heating temperature of MLG by 70 °C. In terms of photothermal performance, the surface temperature of GF on 50 min plasma-treated PI substrate can reach 73 °C under one Sun irradiation, which is 8 °C higher than that on untreated substrate. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation research. Our strategy has important implications for the development of efficient and energy-saving graphene/graphite-based heating films for advanced electrothermal and photothermal conversion devices.

Multifunctional Structure-Modified Quaternary Compounds Co9Se8-CuSe2-WSe2 Mixed with MWCNT as a Counter Electrode Material for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

In this study, a trimetallic selenide material with a hollow spherical structure (Co9Se8-CuSe2-WSe2) was synthesized through two consecutive solvothermal reactions. The synergistic effect between the quaternary elements, the benefits of the selenization of metals, and the unique morphology led to the prominent electrocatalytic ability of Co9Se8-CuSe2-WSe2 hollow spheres. Co9Se8-CuSe2-WSe2 hollow spheres were then mixed with oxygen plasma-treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as counter electrode (CE) material for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), achieving a photoelectric conversion efficiency (η) of 9.23% under one sun condition (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm-2), surpassing the 8.08% of devices with platinum counter electrodes (PtCEs). For indoor conditions, a T5 light source was applied to the DSSCs with Co9Se8-CuSe2-WSe2 + MWCNT CE, and the efficiency increased to 14.14% under 3600 lx irradiance. Finally, Co9Se8-CuSe2-WSe2 + MWCNT CE demonstrated good stability with 92.23% retention after 1000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry, exceeding the 82.49% of PtCE. Therefore, Co9Se8-CuSe2-WSe2 + MWCNT shows potential as a substitute for platinum as CE material for DSSCs.

Plasma Treatment for Achieving Oxygen Substitution in Layered MoS2 and the Room-Temperature Mid-Infrared (10 μm) Photoresponse

Highly sensitive photodetectors in the mid-infrared (MIR, 3-15 μm) are highly desired in a growing number of applications. However, only a handful of narrow-band-gap semiconductors are suitable for this purpose, most of which require cryogenic cooling to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. The realization of high-performance MIR photodetectors operating at room temperature remains a challenge. Herein, we report on plasma-treated few-layer MoS2 for room-temperature MIR (10 μm) photodetection. Oxygen plasma treatment, which is a mature microfabrication process, is employed. The ion kinetic energy of oxygen plasma is adjusted to 70-130 eV. A photoresponsivity of 0.042 mA/W and a detectivity of 1.57 × 107 Jones are obtained under MIR light (10 μm) illumination with an average power density of 114.6 mW/cm2. The photoresponse is attributed to the introduction of electronic states in the band gap of MoS2 through oxygen substitution. A graphene/plasma-treated MoS2/graphene device is further demonstrated to shorten the active channel while maintaining the illumination area. The photoresponsivity and detectivity are largely boosted to 1.8 A/W and 2.64 × 109 Jones, respectively. The excellent detective performance of the graphene/plasma-treated MoS2/graphene device is further demonstrated in single-detector MIR (10 μm) scanning imaging. This work offers a facile approach to constructing integrated MoS2-based MIR photodetectors.

Highly Stretchable PPy/PDMS Strain Sensors Fabricated with Multi-Step Oxygen Plasma Treatment

We present highly stretchable polypyrrole (PPy)/polydimethylsiloxane strain sensors of highly improved sensitivity and durability fabricated by a chemical oxidative polymerization with oxygen plasma treatment (O₂ PT). In this study, O₂ PT was performed for 30, 60, and 90 s at each growth stage of the PPy film in three steps to investigate the effects on the sensor performance as well as the microstructural properties of the PPy films. Bonding characteristics with underlying layers and resistance to microcrack generation of the multi-layer PPy films under our given strained state were significantly enhanced by the O₂ PT. The best sensor performance in terms of sensitivity and stability were achieved by PT for 30 s with a maximum gauge factor of ~438 at a uniaxial strain of 50%, excellent durability over 500 stretching/release cycles, and a fast response time of ~50 ms.

Transformed Filaments by Oxygen Plasma Treatment and Improved Resistance State

The simple structure and operation method of resistive random-access memory (RRAM) has attracted attention as next-generation memory. However, as it is greatly influenced by the movement of oxygen atoms during switching, it is essential to minimize the damage and adjust the defects. Here, we fabricated an ITO/SnO_X/TaN device and investigated the performance improvement with the treatment of O₂ plasma. Firstly, the change in the forming curve was noticeable, and the defect adjustment was carried out effectively. By comparing the I-V curves, it was confirmed that the resistance increased and the current was successfully suppressed, making it suitable for use as a low-power consumption device. Retention of more than 10⁴ s at room temperature was measured, and an endurance of 200 cycles was performed. The filaments' configuration was revealed through the depth profile of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and modeled to be visually observed. The work with plasma treatment provides a variety of applications to the neuromorphic system that require a low-current level.

Improved Temporal Response of MoS2 Photodetectors by Mild Oxygen Plasma Treatment

Temporal response is an important factor limiting the performance of two-dimensional (2D) material photodetectors. The deep trap states caused by intrinsic defects are the main factor to prolong the response time. In this work, it is demonstrated that the trap states in 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) can be efficiently modulated by defect engineering through mild oxygen plasma treatment. The response time of the few-layer MoS₂ photodetector is accelerated by 2–3 orders of magnitude, which is mainly attributed to the deep trap states that can be easily filled when O₂ or oxygen ions are chemically bonded with MoS₂ at sulfur vacancies (SV) sites. We characterized the defect engineering of plasma-exposed MoS₂ by Raman, PL and electric properties. Under the optimal processing conditions of 30 W, 50 Pa and 30 s, we found 30-fold enhancements in photoluminescence (PL) intensity and a nearly 2-fold enhancement in carrier field-effect mobility, while the rise and fall response times reached 110 ms and 55 ms, respectively, at the illumination wavelength of 532 nm. This work would, therefore, offer a practical route to improve the performance of 2D dichalcogenide-based devices for future consideration in optoelectronics research.

Surface Modification of Carbon Fiber-Polyetheretherketone Composite to Impart Bioactivity by Using Apatite Nuclei

The authors aimed to impart the apatite-forming ability to 50 wt% carbon fiber-polyetheretherketone composite (50C-PEEK), which has more suitable mechanical properties as artificial bone materials than pure PEEK. First, the 50C-PEEK was treated with sulfuric acid in a short time to form pores on the surface. Second, the surface of the 50C-PEEK was treated with oxygen plasma to improve the hydrophilicity. Finally, fine particles of calcium phosphate, which the authors refer to as “apatite nuclei”, were precipitated on the surface of the 50C-PEEK by soaking in an aqueous solution containing multiple inorganic ions such as phosphate and calcium (modified-SBF) at pH 8.20, 25 °C. The 50C-PEEK without the modified-SBF treatment did not show the formation of apatitic phase even after immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 7 days. The 50C-PEEK treated with the modified-SBF showed the formation of apatitic phase on the entire surface within 1 day in the SBF. The apatite nuclei-precipitated 50C-PEEK will be expected as a new artificial bone material with high bioactivity that is obtained without complicated fabrication processes.

Enhancement of Synaptic Characteristics Achieved by the Optimization of Proton-Electron Coupling Effect in a Solid-State Electrolyte-Gated Transistor

Presently, the 3-terminal artificial synapse device has been in focus for neuromorphic computing systems owing to its excellent weight controllability. Here, an artificial synapse device based on the 3-terminal solid-state electrolyte-gated transistor is proposed to achieve outstanding synaptic characteristics with a human-like mechanism at low power. Novel synaptic characteristics are accomplished by precisely tuning the threshold voltage using the proton-electron coupling effect, which is caused by proton migration inside the electrolyte. However, these synaptic characteristics are degraded because traps at the interface of channel/electrolyte disturb the proton-electron coupling effect. To minimize degradation, the oxygen plasma treatment is performed to reduce interface traps. As a result, symmetric weight updates and outstanding synaptic characteristics are achieved. Furthermore, high repeatability and long-term plasticity are observed at low operating power, which is essential for artificial synapses. Therefore, this study shows the progress of artificial synapses and proposes a promising method, a low-power neuromorphic system, to achieve high accuracy.

Enhanced Magneto-Optic Properties in Sputtered Bi- Containing Ferrite Garnet Thin Films Fabricated Using Oxygen Plasma Treatment and Metal Oxide Protective Layers

Magneto-optic (MO) imaging and sensing are at present the most developed practical applications of thin-film MO garnet materials. However, in order to improve sensitivity for a range of established and forward-looking applications, the technology and component-related advances are still necessary. These improvements are expected to originate from new material system development. We propose a set of technological modifications for the RF-magnetron sputtering deposition and crystallization annealing of magneto-optic bismuth-substituted iron-garnet films and investigate the improved material properties. Results show that standard crystallization annealing for the as-deposited ultrathin (sputtered 10 nm thick, amorphous phase) films resulted in more than a factor of two loss in the magneto-optical activity of the films in the visible spectral region, compared to the liquid-phase grown epitaxial films. Results also show that an additional 10 nm-thick metal-oxide (Bi₂O₃) protective layer above the amorphous film results in ~2.7 times increase in the magneto-optical quality of crystallized iron-garnet films. On the other hand, the effects of post-deposition oxygen (O₂) plasma treatment on the magneto-optical (MO) properties of Bismuth substituted iron garnet thin film materials are investigated. Results show that in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum (at 532 nm), the O₂ treated (up to 3 min) garnet films retain higher specific Faraday rotation and figures of merit compared to non-treated garnet films.

Oxygen Plasma Activation of Carbon Nanotubes-Interconnected Prussian Blue Analogue for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

To obtain renewable and clean fuels, exploration of effective electrocatalysts is highly desirable due to the sluggish kinetics of water splitting. In this study, the oxygen plasma-activated hybrid structure of Ni-Fe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) interconnected by carbon nanotubes (O-CNT/NiFe) is reported as a highly effective electrocatalytic material for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The electrocatalytic performance is significantly influenced by different mass ratios of CNTs to Ni-Fe PBA. Benefiting from the conductive and oxygen plasma-activated CNTs as well as ordered and distributed metal sites in the framework, the optimized O-CNT/NiFe 1:18 exhibits a competitive overpotential of 279 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a low Tafel slope of 42.8 mV dec^-1 in 1.0 M KOH. Furthermore, the composite shows superior durability for at least 100 h. These results suggest that the O-CNT/NiFe 1:18 possesses promising potential as a highly active electrocatalyst.

Performance Enhancement of Electrospun IGZO-Nanofiber-Based Field-Effect Transistors with High-k Gate Dielectrics through Microwave Annealing and Postcalcination Oxygen Plasma Treatment

We investigated the effects of various high-k gate dielectrics as well as microwave annealing (MWA) calcination and a postcalcination oxygen plasma treatment on the electrical properties and stability of electrospun indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO)-nanofiber (NF)-based field-effect transistors (FETs). We found that the higher the dielectric constant of the gate dielectric, the better the electric field is transferred, resulting in the better performance of the IGZO NF FET. In addition, the MWA-calcined IGZO NF FET was superior to the conventional furnace annealing-calcined device in terms of the electrical properties of the device and the operation of resistor-loaded inverter, and it was proved that the oxygen plasma treatment further improved the performance. The results of the gate bias temperature stress test confirmed that the MWA calcination process and postcalcination oxygen plasma treatment greatly improved the stability of the IGZO NF FET by reducing the number of defects and charge traps. This verified that the MWA calcination process and oxygen plasma treatment effectively remove the organic solvent and impurities that act as charge traps in the chemical analysis of NF using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, it was demonstrated through scanning electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer that the MWA calcination process and postcalcination oxygen plasma treatment also improve the morphological and optical properties of IGZO NF.

Plasma-Polymer-Fluorocarbon Thin Film Coated Nanostructured-Polyethylene Terephthalate Surface with Highly Durable Superhydrophobic and Antireflective Properties

Herein, an antireflection and superhydrophobic film was obtained by uniformly forming nanostructures on the surface of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate using oxygen plasma without a pattern mask and coating plasma-polymer-fluorocarbon (PPFC) on the nanostructured surface by mid-range frequency sputtering. PPFC/nanostructured-PET showed a reflectance of 4.2%, which is 56% lower than that of the PET film. Haze was also improved. Nanostructured-PET exhibited a superhydrophilic surface due to plasma deformation and a superhydrophobic surface could be realized by coating PPFC on the nanostructured surface. The PPFC coating prevented the aging of polymer film nanostructures and showed excellent durability in a high-temperature and high-humidity environment. It exhibited excellent flexibility to maintain the superhydrophobic surface, even at a mechanical bending radius of 1 mm, and could retain its properties even after repeated bending for 10,000 times.

Surface Plasmon Resonance-Enhanced Near-Infrared Absorption in Single-Layer MoS2 with Vertically Aligned Nanoflakes

The development of MoS₂ with two- or three-dimensional heterostructures can provide a significant breakthrough for the enhancement of photodetection abilities such as increase in light absorption and expanding the detection ranges. Till date, although the synthesis of a MoS₂ layer with three-dimensional nanostructures using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process has been successfully demonstrated, most studies have concentrated on electrochemical applications that utilize structural strengths, for example, a large specific surface area and electrochemically active sites. Here, for the first time, we report spectral light absorption induced by plasmon resonances in single-layer MoS₂ (SL-MoS₂) with vertically aligned nanoflakes grown by a CVD process. Treatment with oxygen plasma results in the formation of a substoichiometric phase of MoO_x in the vertical nanoflakes, which exhibit a high electron density of 4.5 × 10¹³ cm^-2. The substoichiometric MoO_x with a high electron-doping level that is locally present on the SL-MoS₂ surface induces an absorption band in the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range of 1000-1750 nm because of the plasmon resonances. Finally, we demonstrate the enhancement of photodetection ability by broadening the detection range from the visible region to the NIR region in oxygen-treated SL-MoS₂ with vertically aligned nanoflakes.

Ultraviolet Photodetecting and Plasmon-to-Electric Conversion of Controlled Inkjet-Printing Thin-Film Transistors

Direct ink-jet printing of a zinc-oxide-based thin-film transistor (ZnO-based TFT) with a three-dimensional (3-D) channel structure was demonstrated for ultraviolet light (UV) and visible light photodetection. Here, we demonstrated the channel structures by which temperature-induced Marangoni flow can be used to narrow the channel width from 318.9 ± 44.1 μm to 180.1 ± 13.9 μm via a temperature gradient. Furthermore, a simple and efficient oxygen plasma treatment was used to enhance the electrical characteristics of switching I_ON/I_OFF ratio of approximately 10⁵. Therefore, the stable and excellent gate bias-controlled photo-transistors were fabricated and characterized in detail for ultraviolet (UV) and visible light sensing. The photodetector exhibited a superior photoresponse with a significant increase of more than 2 orders of magnitude larger drain current generated upon UV illumination. The results could be useful for the development of UV photodetectors by the direct-patterning ink-jet printing technique. Additionally, we also have successfully demonstrated that a metal-semiconductor junction structure that enables plasmon energy detection by using the plasmonic effects is an efficient conversion of plasmon energy to an electrical signal. The device showed a significant variations negative shift of threshold voltage under different light power density with exposure of visible light. With the ZnO-based TFTs, only ultraviolet light detection extends to the visible light wavelength.

Direct Observation of Structural Deformation Immunity for Understanding Oxygen Plasma Treatment-Enhanced Resistive Switching in HfOx-Based Memristive Devices

Oxygen ions' migration is the fundamental resistive switching (RS) mechanism of the binary metal oxides-based memristive devices, and recent studies have found that the RS performance can be enhanced through appropriate oxygen plasma treatment (OPT). However, the lack of experimental evidence observed directly from the microscopic level of materials and applicable understanding of how OPT improves the RS properties will cause significant difficulties in its further application. In this work, we apply scanning probe microscope (SPM)-based techniques to study the OPT-enhanced RS performance in prototypical HfOx based memristive devices through in situ morphology and electrical measurements. It is first found that the structural deformations in HfOx nanofilm induced by migration of oxygen ions and interfacial electrochemical reactions can be recovered by OPT effectively. More importantly, such structural deformations no longer occur after OPT due to the strengthening in lattice structure, which directly illustrates the enhanced quantity of HfOx nanofilm and the nature of enhanced RS properties after OPT. Finally, the underlying mechanisms of OPT-enhanced RS performance are analyzed by the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) surface analysis. In the OPT-enhanced HfOx nanofilm, oxygen vacancies in crystalline regions can be remarkably reduced by active oxygen ions' implantation. The oxygen ions transport will depend considerably on the grain boundaries and OPT-enhanced lattice structure will further guarantee the stability of conductive filaments, both of which ensure the uniformity and repeatability in RS processes. This study could provide a scientific basis for improving RS performance of oxides-based memristive devices by utilizing OPT.

A Gas Sensing Channel Composited with Pristine and Oxygen Plasma-Treated Graphene

Oxygen plasma treatment has been reported as an effective way of improving the response of graphene gas sensors. In this work, a gas sensor based on a composite graphene channel with a layer of pristine graphene (G) at the bottom and an oxygen plasma-treated graphene (OP-G) as a covering layer was reported. The OP-G on top provided oxygen functional groups and serves as the gas molecule grippers, while the as-grown graphene beneath serves as a fast carrier transport path. Thus, the composite channel (OP-G/G) demonstrated significantly improved response in NH₃ gas sensing tests compared with the pristine G channel. Moreover, the OP-G/G channel showed faster response and recovering process than the OP-G channel. Since this kind of composite channel is fabricated from chemical vapor deposited graphene and patterned with standard photolithography, the device dimension was much smaller than a gas sensor fabricated from reduced graphene oxide and it is favorable for the integration of a large number of sensing units.

Growth Condition-Oriented Defect Engineering for Changes in Au⁻ZnO Contact Behavior from Schottky to Ohmic and Vice Versa

ZnO has the built-in characteristics of both ionic and covalent compound semiconductors, which makes the metal–ZnO carrier transport mechanism quite intricate. The growth mechanism-centric change in ZnO defect density and carrier concentration also makes the contact formation and behavior unpredictable. This study investigates the uncertainty in Au–ZnO contact behavior for application-oriented research and the development on ZnO nanostructures. Herein, we explain the phenomenon for how Au–ZnO contact could be rectifying or non-rectifying. Growth method-dependent defect engineering was exploited to explain the change in Schottky barrier heights at the Au–ZnO interface, and the change in device characteristics from Schottky to Ohmic and vice versa. The ZnO nanorods were fabricated via aqueous chemical growth (ACG) and microwave-assisted growth (MAG) methods. For further investigations, one ACG sample was doped with Ga, and another was subjected to oxygen plasma treatment (OPT). The ACG and Ga-doped ACG samples showed a quasi-Ohmic and Ohmic behavior, respectively, because of a high surface and subsurface level donor defect-centric Schottky barrier pinning at the Au–ZnO interface. However, the ACG-OPT and MAG samples showed a more pronounced Schottky contact because of the presence of low defect-centric carrier concentration via MAG, and the removal of the surface accumulation layer via the OPT process.

Infection burden and immunological responses are equivalent for polymeric and metallic implant materials in vitro and in a murine model of fracture-related infection

The development of an infection is a major complication for some patients with implanted biomaterials. Whether the material or surface composition of the used biomaterial influences infection has not been directly compared for key biomaterials currently in use in human patients. We conducted a thorough in vitro and in vivo investigation using titanium (Ti) and polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) as both commercially available and as modified equivalents (surface polished Ti, and oxygen plasma treated PEEK). Complement activation and cytokine secretion of cell of the immune system was assessed in vitro for all materials in the absence and presence of bacterial stimulants. In a follow-up in vivo study, we monitored bacterial infection associated with clinically available and standard Ti and PEEK inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus. Complement activation was affected by material choice in the absence of bacterial stimulation, although the material based differences were largely lost upon bacterial stimulation. In the in vivo study, the bacterial burden, histological response and cytokine secretion suggests that there is no significant difference between both PEEK and Ti. In conclusion, the underlying material has a certain impact in the absence of bacterial stimulation, however, in the presence of bacterial stimulation, bacteria seem to dictate the responses in a manner that overshadows the influence of material surface properties. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Experimental Study on the Laser Transmission Joining of Polystyrene and Titanium

To address the difficulty of joining polystyrene (PS) and titanium by laser transmission joining, two methods—laser treatment of the titanium surface and oxygen plasma treatment of the PS surface—are used to compare the laser transmission joint strengths of the different treatment methods. The results of the experiments find that joining with titanium can be achieved only when PS is treated with oxygen plasma. When the laser-treated surface of titanium is jointed to the oxygen plasma-treated PS, the joint strength is the highest, reaching 6.5 MPa. The joining mechanism of oxygen plasma-treated PS and laser oxidation-treated titanium was investigated by joint tensile failure mode, joint micromorphology observation, contact angle and surface free energy experiments, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the failure mode of the joint is an interfacial failure; the size and amount of bubbles play an important role in the joining strength, and the joints with fine and uniform bubbles have the highest joint strength. The two surface treatment methods can improve the surface energy of the joints, improve the compatibility between the two joining surfaces, and enhance the joint strength. Ti–C and Ti–O chemical bonds are formed at the joints, which are the main reason for the increase in joint strength.

Oxygen Plasma-Treated Graphene Oxide Surface Functionalization for Sensitivity Enhancement of Thin-Film Piezoelectric Acoustic Gas Sensors

In this work, we presented a thin-film piezoelectric acoustic gas sensor with enhanced sensitivity by a surface modification strategy of oxygen plasma treated graphene oxide (GO) functionalization. By exposing to ammonia vapor (NH₃) of various concentrations at controlled temperature and humidity, the characteristics of the GO-coated acoustic sensor were investigated, that is, sensitivity, linearity, response, and recovery time. Oxygen plasma treatment of the GO-coated sensor further enhanced the sensitivity compared with the freshly prepared GO-coated sensor. The mechanism of oxygen plasma treatment effect on the GO-coated sensor was discussed based on characterizations of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and precise weighing of the acoustic sensor. It was found that the oxygen plasma treatment introduces numerous defects to GO flakes, which are uniformly distributed across the GO surface, providing more gas molecule binding sites.

In Vitro and in Vivo Study of Poly(Lactic⁻co⁻Glycolic) (PLGA) Membranes Treated with Oxygen Plasma and Coated with Nanostructured Hydroxyapatite Ultrathin Films for Guided Bone Regeneration Processes

The novelty of this study is the addition of an ultrathin layer of nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) on oxygen plasma modified poly(lactic–co–glycolic) (PLGA) membranes (PO₂) in order to evaluate the efficiency of this novel material in bone regeneration. Methods: Two groups of regenerative membranes were prepared: PLGA (control) and PLGA/PO₂/HA (experimental). These membranes were subjected to cell cultures and then used to cover bone defects prepared on the skulls of eight experimental rabbits. Results: Cell morphology and adhesion of the osteoblasts to the membranes showed that the osteoblasts bound to PLGA were smaller and with a lower number of adhered cells than the osteoblasts bound to the PLGA/PO₂/HA membrane (p < 0.05). The PLGA/PO₂/HA membrane had a higher percentage of viable cells bound than the control membrane (p < 0.05). Both micro-CT and histological evaluation confirmed that PLGA/PO₂/HA membranes enhance bone regeneration. A statistically significant difference in the percentage of osteoid area in relation to the total area between both groups was found. Conclusions: The incorporation of nanometric layers of nanostructured HA into PLGA membranes modified with PO₂ might be considered for the regeneration of bone defects. PLGA/PO₂/HA membranes promote higher osteosynthetic activity, new bone formation, and mineralisation than the PLGA control group.

Patterned Well-Aligned ZnO Nanorods Assisted with Polystyrene Monolayer by Oxygen Plasma Treatment

Zinc oxide is known as a promising material for sensing devices due to its piezoelectric properties. In particular, the alignment of ZnO nanostructures into ordered nanoarrays is expected to improve the device sensitivity due to the large surface area which can be utilized to capture significant quantities of gas particles. However, ZnO nanorods are difficult to grow on the quartz substrate with well-ordered shape. So, we investigated nanostructures by adjusting the interval distance of the arranged ZnO nanorods using polystyrene (PS) spheres of various sizes (800 nm, 1300 nm and 1600 nm). In addition, oxygen plasma treatment was used to specify the nucleation site of round, patterned ZnO nanorod growth. Therefore, ZnO nanorods were grown on a quartz substrate with a patterned polystyrene monolayer by the hydrothermal method after oxygen plasma treatment. The obtained ZnO nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM).

Rapid Hydrophilization of Model Polyurethane/Urea (PURPEG) Polymer Scaffolds Using Oxygen Plasma Treatment

Polyurethane/urea copolymers based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PURPEG) were exposed to weakly ionized, highly reactive low-pressure oxygen plasma to improve their sorption kinetics. The plasma was sustained with an inductively coupled radiofrequency generator operating at various power levels in either E-mode (up to the forward power of 300 W) or H-mode (above 500 W). The treatments that used H-mode caused nearly instant thermal degradation of the polymer samples. The density of the charged particles in E-mode was on the order of 10¹⁶ m⁻³, which prevented material destruction upon plasma treatment, but the density of neutral O-atoms in the ground state was on the order of 10²¹ m⁻³. The evolution of plasma characteristics during sample treatment in E-mode was determined by optical emission spectroscopy; surface modifications were determined by water adsorption kinetics and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; and etching intensity was determined by residual gas analysis. The results showed moderate surface functionalization with hydroxyl and carboxyl/ester groups, weak etching at a rate of several nm/s, rather slow activation down to a water contact angle of 30° and an ability to rapidly absorb water.

Formation of Nanocones on Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite by Oxygen Plasma

Improvement in hemocompatibility of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) by formation of nanostructured surface by oxygen plasma treatment is reported. We have showed that by appropriate fine tuning of plasma and discharge parameters we are able to create nanostructured surface which is densely covered with nanocones. The size of the nanocones strongly depended on treatment time. The optimal results in terms of material hemocompatibility were obtained after treatment with oxygen plasma for 15 s, when both the nanotopography and wettability were the most favorable, since marked reduction in adhesion and activation of platelets was observed on this surface. At prolonged treatment times, the rich surface topography was lost and thus also its antithrombogenic properties. Chemical composition of the surface was always more or less the same, regardless of its morphology and height of the nanocones. Namely, on all plasma treated samples, only a few atomic percent of oxygen was found, meaning that plasma caused mostly etching, leading to changes in the surface morphology. This indicates that the main preventing mechanism against platelets adhesion was the right surface morphology.
