Numerical Modeling of Unreinforced Masonry Walls Strengthened with Fe-Based Shape Memory Alloy Strips

This study presents a new way to improve masonry wall behavior. Masonry structures comprise a significant part of the world's structures. These structures are very vulnerable to earthquakes, and their performances need to be improved. One way to enhance the performances of such types of structures is the use of post-tensioning reinforcements. In the current study, the effects of shape memory alloy as post-tensioning reinforcements on originally unreinforced masonry walls were investigated using finite element simulations in Abaqus. The developed models were validated based on experimental results in the literature. Iron-based shape memory alloy strips were installed on masonry walls by three different configurations, namely in cross or vertical forms. Seven macroscopic masonry walls were modeled in Abaqus software and were subjected to cyclic loading protocol. Parameters such as stiffness, strength, durability, and energy dissipation of these models were then compared. According to the results, the Fe-based strips increased the strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity. So that in the vertical-strip walls, the stiffness increases by 98.1%, and in the cross-strip model's position, the stiffness increases by 127.9%. In the vertical-strip model, the maximum resistance is equal to 108 kN, while in the end cycle, this number is reduced by almost half and reaches 40 kN, in the cross-strip model, the maximum resistance is equal to 104 kN, and in the final cycle, this number decreases by only 13.5% and reaches 90 kN. The scattering of Fe-based strips plays an important role in energy dissipation. Based on the observed behaviors, the greater the scattering, the higher the energy dissipation. The increase was more visible in the walls with the configuration of the crossed Fe-based strips.

Activated Ductile CFRP NSMR Strengthening

Significant strengthening of concrete structures can be obtained when using adhesively-bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) systems. Challenges related to such strengthening methods are; however, the brittle concrete delamination failure, reduced warning, and the consequent inefficient use of the CFRP. A novel ductile near-surface mounted reinforcement (NSMR) CFRP strengthening system with a high CFRP utilization is introduced in this paper. It is hypothesized that the tailored ductile enclosure wedge (EW) end anchors, in combination with low E-modulus and high elongation adhesive, can provide significant strengthening and ductility control. Five concrete T-beams were strengthened using the novel system with a CFRP rod activation stress of approximately 980 MPa. The beam responses were compared to identical epoxy-bonded NSMR strengthened and un-strengthened beams. The linear elastic response was identical to the epoxy-bonded NSMR strengthened beam. In addition, the average deflection and yielding regimes were improved by 220% and 300% (average values), respectively, with an ultimate capacity comparable to the epoxy-bonded NSMR strengthened beam. Reproducible and predictable strengthening effect seems obtainable, where a good correlation between the results and applied theory was reached. The brittle failure modes were prevented, where concrete compression failure and frontal overload anchor failure were experienced when failure was initiated.

Investigating the Effects of Fiber Reinforced Concrete on the Performance of End-Zone of Pre-Stressed Beams

This paper presents the results of the behavior of end zone of post-tensioned (PT) beams made of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC). The principal aim of using FRC was to enhance the ductility and post-cracking behavior of end-zone of post-tensioned beams. A stronger and tougher end-zone of PT-beams is necessary when it is subjected to dynamic loading. Post-tensioned (PT) beams are typically used for the construction of bridges and industrial buildings, which are often subjected to vibrations and cyclic loading. Pre-mature cracking of the end zone (EZ) of a PT-beam is considered the type of problem that may cause the structural collapse. In this research program, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and copper-coated steel (CCS) fibers were used in concrete for improving the EZ performance of PT-beams. The use of FRC caused a 50% reduction in the shear reinforcement within the end zone of the PT-beam, which also avoided the congestion of steel in the end zone. Hence, the concrete was placed homogeneously, and smooth finished surfaces of the beams were obtained. FRC controlled the bursting of the end zone during the transfer of the full pre-stress force, and approximately 25% increment in the strain energy of the end zone was observed, which was also found efficient in strain diminution along the length of the beam.

Evaluation of Prestress Loss Distribution during Pre-Tensioning and Post-Tensioning Using Long-Gauge Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

Prestress loss evaluation in prestressed strands is essential for prestressed structures. However, the sensors installed outside the duct can only measure the total prestress loss. The sensors attached on strands inside the duct also have several problems, such as inadequate durability in an aggressive environment and vulnerability to damage during tensioning. This paper proposes a new installation method for long-gauge fiber Bragg grating (LFBG) sensors to prevent accidental damage. Then the itemized prestress losses were determined in each stage of the pre-tensioning and post-tensioning according to the LFBG measurements. We verified the applicability of the LFBG sensors for prestress monitoring and the accuracy of the proposed prestress loss calculation method during pre-tensioning and post-tensioning. In the pre-tensioning case, the calculated prestress losses had less deviation from the true losses than those obtained from foil-strain gauges, and the durability of the LFBG sensors was better than foil-strain gauges, whereas in post-tensioning case, the calculated prestress losses were close to those derived from theoretical predictions. Finally, we monitored prestress variation in the strand for 90 days. The itemized prestress losses at each stages of post-tensioning were obtained by the proposed calculation method to show the prospect of the LFBG sensors in practical evaluation.
