Observation of the Effect of Aging on the Structural Changes of Polyurethane/Polyurea Coatings

In this study, polyurethane/polyurea coatings were exposed to four different types of aging: aging in the natural environment (NC), accelerated ultraviolet aging (UV), aging in a sodium chloride solution (NaCl), and thermal aging (TC). To monitor the changes that occurred during these processes, the thickness was measured and microscopic and macroscopic observations were conducted continuously. The samples aged under various conditions were then subjected to spectroscopic (FTIR) and thermal (TGA) analysis to determine the possible structural changes in the coatings. The dependence of aging conditions on the physicochemical properties of the tested coating surfaces was thoroughly investigated and characterized by the water contact angle and surface free energy. Adhesion tests were performed after the established aging period. The results show that different aging conditions have a tremendous effect on the appearance and pull-off strength. The coatings that age in a NaCl solution are more affected in terms of their adhesion.

Use of Multi-Scale Investigation to Evaluate Adhesion Performance of Warm-Mix Polymer-Modified Asphalt

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology can effectively reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption during road project construction. However, it may have a negative impact on the binding properties of asphalt mixtures. In order to effectively evaluate the adhesion performance of asphalt binders and aggregates under the combined influence of WMA and traditional polymer-modified asphalt, this paper provides a comprehensive evaluation at the micro and macro levels. The adhesion between three different modified asphalts (warm mix crumb rubber/ Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) composite modified asphalt, warm mix crumb rubber asphalt, and warm mix SBS modified asphalt) and two different aggregates (limestone and granite) under both virgin and short-term aging conditions were analyzed. Regardless of the type of modified asphalt, the results showed that limestone aggregates have better adhesion properties with asphalt binders. In addition, the short-term thermal oxidation aging behavior is conducive to enhancing the asphalt-aggregate adhesion characteristics. Furthermore, WMA additives, crumb rubber, and SBS compound modification can improve the adhesion performance between asphalt and aggregate.

Experimental Test of Reinforced Timber of FRCM-PBO with Pull-Off Adhesion Method

The article describes the results of pull-off adhesion strength of the FRCM-PBO (Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix-p-Phenylene benzobis oxazole) composite adhered to the epoxy resin layer which is the connector with the timber beam. In addition, this paper shows the results of the tests of resistance to pull-off the epoxy resin layer from the pine beam. The tests were carried out based on the Polish Standard PN-EN 1542. The Pearson linear correlation analysis was also carried out in order to determine the correlation between the obtained results and the destructive forces. The factors that occurred during the test that may affect its results, such as the method of applying the bursting force, surface preparation of the tested elements and the types of substrate destruction, were also characterized. The experimental data show that in all the tested samples, non-initial adhesive destruction between the adhesive layer and the disc was observed.

Influence of Pre-Treatment and Artificial Aging on the Retention of 3D-Printed Permanent Composite Crowns

The aim of this in vitro study is to investigate the bonding properties of a 3D-printable permanent composite material in comparison to milled composite materials. The tested materials are 3D-printed BEGO VarseoSmile Crown plus (VA1_ab, VA1_nt, VA2_ab, VA2_nt), Vita Enamic (EN1, EN2), and 3M Lava Ultimate (UL1, UL2) (N = 64; n = 8). For this purpose, all crowns are luted to polymer tooth stumps #46 (FDI) using dual-curing luting composite, strictly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. VA1_ab and VA2_ab are additionally airborne-particle abraded. 4 groups (VA2_ab, VA2_nt, EN2, UL2) are artificially aged (1,200,000 cycles, 50 N, 10,000 thermocycles), whereby no specimen has failed. All 64 specimens undergo pull-off testing until retention loss. The mean forces of retention-loss is 786.6 ± 137.6 N (VA1_nt, *), 988.6 ± 212.1 N (VA2_nt, *, Ɨ), 1223.8 ± 119.2 N (VA1_ab, Ɨ, ǂ), 1051.9 ± 107.2 N (VA2_ab, *, Ɨ), 1185.9 ± 211.8 N (EN1, Ɨ, ǂ), 1485.0 ± 198.2 N EN2, ǂ), 1533.8 ± 42.4 N (UL1, ǂ), and 1521.8 ± 343.4 N (UL2, ǂ) (one-way ANOVA (Scheffé method); p < 0.05; *, Ɨ, ǂ: group distribution). No characteristic failure modes can be detected. In conclusion, all of the pull-off forces reflect retention values that seem to be sufficiently high for clinical use. Additional airborne-particle abrasion of VA does not result in significantly better retention but can be recommended.

Investigation of Adhesion Performance of Wax Based Warm Mix Asphalt with Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Compared with traditional hot mix asphalt (HMA), wax based warm mix asphalt (WWMA) can be mixed with the aggregate at a lower temperature and achieve the desired compaction. However, the adhesion performance of WWMA on aggregate is uncertain. To evaluate the adhesion performance of asphalt and aggregate, researchers used contact angle test, pull-off test, and ultrasonic washing experiments. However, these tests cannot adequately explain the microscopic mechanism of the interface between asphalt and aggregate. Molecular dynamics (MD) can better explain the adhesion mechanism of asphalt aggregates because they can be simulated at the molecular scale. So, the purpose of this research is to use the MD method to study the adhesion performance between WWMA and aggregate. Two aggregate oxides (CaCO₃ and SiO₂) models, the matrix asphalt model and WWMA models, were built in Materials Studio (MS) software. The adhesion work of asphalt and aggregate oxides was calculated. With the increase of wax modifier content, the adhesion work of asphalt and aggregate oxides (CaCO₃ and SiO₂) first increases and then decreases. When the wax modifier is increased to 3 wt%, the adhesion works of the WWMA-SiO₂ and WWMA-CaCO₃ increase by 31.2% and 14.0%, compared with that of matrix asphalt. In this study, the accuracy of the MD calculation result was verified by the pull-off experiments and the contact angle experiments. WWMA was prepared by a high-shear mixer emulsifier. In the pull-off experiments and the contact angle experiments, the tensile strength and the adhesion work between the aggregate and the asphalt containing 3% wax modifier reaches peak values. These values are 140.7% and 124.9%, compared with those between the aggregate and the matrix asphalt. In addition, the results of the pull-off experiments and the contact angle experiments are in good agreement with that of the MD simulation. Finally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) shows that the carbonyl content of WWMA is greater than that of matrix asphalt. It explains well that the wax modifier promotes the adhesion between asphalt and aggregate. This paper provides an important theoretical basis to understand the adhesion performance of WWMA and aggregate.

Influence of Epoxy Glue Modification on the Adhesion of CFRP Tapes to Concrete Surface

Strengthening structural concrete, steel or wooden elements with reinforcement tapes is currently a popular method of extending the durability of buildings. In the glued joint Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) tape—concrete substrate, the most critical element is the adhesive layer connecting both materials. The glued joint participates in the transfer of stresses between the reinforced element and the reinforcement tape. Among the numerous analyses of this type of joint, the work resulting from the action of shear stresses (shearing) is considered most frequently, which also results from the originally developed computational models emerging with the development of research on the processes of adhesive effectiveness. The subsequent theories considered the share of other stresses, which is also related to the complex nature of the phenomenon of glue adhesion on various surfaces. Research shows the possibility of modifying the adhesion of the glue by altering its composition and the target surface of application. The study contains the results of research on the possibility of changing the adhesion of the glue to a concrete surface prepared by grinding and sandblasting. The selected epoxy resin has been modified by using the additives of microsilica and carbon nanotubes. Effective mixing of ingredients was achieved due to the use of sonication in the mixing process. Then, the adhesives prepared in this way were used to stick fragments of CFRP tape to concrete surfaces: cleaned, ground and sandblasted. A modified version of the pull-off test was used to determine the effectiveness of adhesion the CFRP tapes to concrete. The results are the final stage summarizing a series of studies including other parameters affecting the bonding efficiency and durability of adhesive bonds.

Development of an Innovative Non-Destructive and Field-Oriented Method to Quantify the Bond Quality of Composite Strengthening Systems on Concrete Structures

Over the last 30 years, structural reinforcement and retrofitting with externally bonded composite materials have proven to be efficient and cost-effective solutions to increase both the safety and the lifespan of civil engineering structures, including nuclear power plants. The effectiveness of the strengthening system highly depends on the level of adhesion between the fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite material and the concrete surface. Therefore, on-site evaluation of the bond quality is critical to assess the performance and predict the durability of the system in place. The direct tension pull-off test is most commonly used to quantify the adhesion level, but this standardized method has many drawbacks. In the present study, it is proposed to evaluate the bond properties by using a nondestructive test (NDT) derived from the standard pull-off test. This innovative test enables the measurement of an interfacial "stiffness" which may be used as a bond quality criterion. This paper gives an insight into the performance of the proposed NDT method, when applied in laboratory conditions to concrete slabs reinforced with bonded pultruded carbon FRP plates (CFRP). Three different epoxy adhesive systems with a broad range of Young's moduli were used for the specimens' preparation, in order to vary the stiffness of the concrete/CFRP interface. The purpose was to simulate different levels of interfacial adhesion that could be observed for a single adhesive system. It was shown that the test method was able to detect differences in the interface stiffness beyond experimental uncertainties, and it should therefore enable the detection of differences in the bond quality for a given adhesive system as well. The sensitivity of the NDT was then discussed, and its detection capabilities were predicted for standard field conditions. In the last part, strain measurements were collected during the NDT, thanks to distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFS) embedded in the adhesive joints of the strengthened specimens. An analysis of the strain profiles was found to provide complementary information on the quality of the adhesive bond.
