Retention and Transport of Nanoplastics with Different Surface Functionalities in a Sand Filtration System

The efficiency of sand filtration was investigated in terms of the behavior of the nanoplastics (NPLs) with different surface functionalities. The initial condition concentrations of NPLs were varied, and their effects on retention and transport were investigated under a constant flow rate in saturated porous media. The behavior of NPLs in this porous system was discussed by considering Z- average size and zeta (ζ) potential measurements of each effluent. The retention efficiencies of NPLs were ranked as functionalized with amidine [A-PS]+ > with sulfate [S-PS]- > with surfactant-coated amidine [SDS-A-PS]-. The reversibility of the adsorption process was revealed by introducing surfactant into the sand filter system containing adsorbed [A-PS]+ at three different initial state concentration conditions. The deposition behavior on sand grain showed that positively charged NPLs were attached to the quartz surface, and negatively charged NPLs were attached to the edge of the clay minerals, which can be caused by electrical heterogeneities. The homoaggregates made of positively charged NPLs were more compact than those made of negatively charged NPLs and surfactant-coated NPLs. An anti-correlation was revealed, suggesting a connection between the fractal dimension (Df) of NPL aggregates and retention efficiencies. Increased Df values are associated with decreased retention efficiencies.The findings underscore the crucial influence of NPL surface properties in terms of retention efficiency and reversible adsorption in the presence of surfactants in sand filtration systems.

Particle Retention Capacity, Efficiency, and Mechanism of Selected Plant Species: Implications for Urban Planting for Improving Urban Air Quality

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) has been of concern owing to its negative effects on human health and its role in environmental degradation. For mitigation purposes, it is important to select the most efficient plant species in urban greening. Here, a fast, cost-saving methodology was first added to the conventional method to investigate the size-resolved PM retention capacity and efficiency of twenty plant species. Surface PM (SPM), which can be removed by water and brushing, accounted for 44.9–66.9% of total PM, in which the water-soluble PM (DPM) accounted for 12.9–22.1% of total PM. A large mass proportion of in-wax PM (14.1–31.7%) was also observed. Platycladus orientalis, Eriobotrya japonica, Viburnum odoratissimum, Magnolia grandiflora had the highest AE_leaf (retention efficiency on per unit leaf area) to retain SPM within different diameter classes (DPM, PM_0.1–2.5, PM_2.5–10, PM_>10). AE_plant (retention efficiency of individual tree) varied greatly among different plant species, mainly due to the dependence on the total area of a tree. AE_land (retention efficiency on per unit green area) is a suitable index for PM retention ability and efficiency. In general, P. orientalis, V. odoratissimum, Pittosporum tobira, Photinia serrulate, M. grandiflora, E. japonica were the efficient species in retaining PM at different scales (i.e., leaf, individual tree, green area). The species like Trifolium repens, Phyllostachys viridis, were the least efficient plant species. The investigated species are all evergreen species, which will remove PM throughout the whole year, even in winter. So, we recommended that the plant species with the highest PM retention efficiency can be used in urban greening. Meanwhile, horticulture practices should also be considered to improve the leaf area index to improve their PM retention and air purification abilities.

[Quantitative Comparison of Methods to Assess the Airborne Particulate Matter Retention Capacity of Leaves]

The objective of this study was to explore the differences of five methods for evaluating the PM retention capacity of leaves based on the same experimental materials and leaf area measurement method and to summarize the advantages and disadvantages of each method. In this study, four tree species (Pinus tabuliformis, Platycladus orientalis, Ginkgo biloba, and Platanus occidentalis), which are common in Beijing and have greatly different leaf characteristics, were selected as the research objects. The mass subtraction method (MS), the membrane filter method (MF), the aerosol regenerator method(AR), the scanning electron method (SEM), and the elution weighing method coupled with a particle size analysis based on ultrasonic cleaning (ultrasonic-EWPA) were used to evaluate the PM retention capabilities and characteristics of the leaves of the four tree species. The total time needed and the total cost were measured simultaneously during the evaluation process. The results showed that although the values of PM retention efficiency obtained by different methods were quite different, the ranks of the efficiency of four tree species obtained by different methods were the same or partially the same. Additionally, the results obtained by the methods with the same or similar principles were more overlapped (AR and SEM had the most overlapped results). In addition, 89% of the species ranks of the same index obtained by each method were P. orientalis > P. tabuliformis > P. occidentalis > G. biloba, and the remaining 11% were P. occidentalis > G. biloba > P. orientalis > P. tabuliformis. Among the five methods, ultrasonic-EWPA was the one with the largest number of indexes and the highest cost, and MS was the one with the least number of indexes and the lowest cost. The one that needed most time was MF, while the one that needed the least time was AR. ultrasonic-EWPA and SEM are high input and high output methods. That is to say, although they needed more time and cost, they can prove more information; however, MS was opposite, which resulted in less information but lower time and cost needed. So, it is suitable for roughly evaluating the total PM retention capacities of trees; MF had a medium amount of information, low cost, but required too much time, which needs to be weighed and balanced before selecting this method. The AR method had strict requirements for equipment and parameters and should be used with caution. The results of this study can provide a comprehensive and detailed scientific basis for researchers to choose specific methods in the future.

[Spatial and Temporal Distribution Characteristics and the Retention Effects of Nutrients in Xiangjiaba Reservoir]

After the construction of the Xiangjiaba Dam, the hydrodynamic conditions, nutrient distributions, and transport conditions of the Jinsha River were changed. Here, the nutrient distribution characteristics and retention effects of Xiangjiaba Reservoir were investigated according to the results of water quality monitoring from 2015 to 2016. Spatial and temporal variations in TN, TP, SiO₃^2-Si, and other nutrients, and retention flux and retention rate were analyzed. The results showed that the nutrient mass concentration of TN, TP, and SiO₃^2--Si was 0.905 mg·L^-1, 0.034 mg·L^-1, and 7.98 mg·L^-1, respectively. The distribution of TN was affected by point sources and the concentration of TN was large in urban areas. This distribution of TP was mainly granular and the mass concentrations decreased along the river path. The mass concentration of SiO₃^2--Si did not significantly vary over time and space. Furthermore, Xiangjiaba Reservoir had a persistent effect on nutrient salts; the average annual retention of TN, TP, and SiO₃^2--Si was 2.30×10⁴ t·a^-1, 0.146×10⁴ t·a^-1, and -2.4×10⁴ t·a^-1, respectively. During different seasons, the retention of TN and SiO₃^2--Si varied between positive or negative; however, TP appeared to be consistent. The average monthly retention efficiency of TN, TP, and SiO₃^2--Si was 17.5%, 32.8%, and -2.14%, respectively. Overall, retention efficiencies were higher during the dry season than that wet season, and phosphorus retention was most pronounced. The retention of TN in the reservoir may be related to denitrification and the input of external load; the flux of SiO₃^2--Si was mainly affected by runoff; and the particle morphology of phosphorus, as well as reservoir period, were the main factors affecting TP retention. There were no clear correlations between nutrient retention and the mass concentrations of TN and SiO₃^2--Si, but the nutrient retention effect of Xiangjiaba Reservoir reduced TP concentrations along the river path and increased TP concentration with vertical depth.

Advanced characterisation of encapsulated lipid powders regarding microstructure by time domain-nuclear magnetic resonance

Encapsulation is an established technique to protect sensitive materials from environmental stress. In order to understand the physical protection mechanism against oxidation, knowledge about the powder microstructure is required. Time domain-nuclear magnetic resonance (TD-NMR) has the potential to determine the surface oil (SO) and droplet size distribution by relaxation and restricted self-diffusion, respectively. The amount of SO, the retention and encapsulation efficiency are determined based on a lipid balance. The oil load of the initial powder and after SO removal is measured by TD-NMR. The results correlate with gravimetric and photometric references. The oil droplet size obtained by TD-NMR correlates well with static light scattering. The diameter of droplets in emulsions and dried powder both measured by TD-NMR, correlates (r = 0.998), implying that oil droplets embedded in a solid matrix can be measured. Summarising, TD-NMR allows analysis of the microstructure of encapsulated lipid powders, in a rapid, simple and non-destructive way.

Formulation and evaluation of a topical niosomal gel containing a combination of benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin for antiacne activity

A skin disease, like acne, is very common and normally happens to everyone at least once in their lifetime. The structure of the stratum corneum is often compared with a brick wall, with corneocytes surrounded by the mortar of the intercellular lipid lamellae. One of the best options for successful drug delivery to the affected area of skin is the use of elastic vesicles (niosomes) which can be transported through the skin through channel-like structures. In this study, a combination of tretinoin (keratolytic agent) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) (a potent antibacterial) was given by using niosomes as promising carriers for the effective treatment of acne by acting on a pathogenic site. In this section, niosomal gel formulation encapsulated drugs have been evaluated for in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo, for their predetermined characteristics; and finally the stability of the niosome gel was tested at different temperature conditions for understanding of the storage conditions required for maintaining the quality of formulation attributes. The prepared niosome was found to be in the range of 531 nm with a zeta potential of −43 mV; the entrapment efficiencies of tretinoin (TRA) and BPO niosomes were found to be 96.25%±0.56% and 98.75%±1.25%, respectively. The permeated amount of TRA and BPO from the niosomal gel after 24 hours was calculated as 6.25±0.14 μg/cm² and 5.04±0.014 μg/cm², respectively. A comparative drug retention study in Wistar rat skin using cream, an alcoholic solution, and a niosomal gel showed 11.54 μg, 2.68 μg, and 15.54 μg amounts of TRA and 68.85 μg, 59.98 μg, and 143.78 μg amounts of BPO were retained in the layers of skin, respectively. In vivo studies of the niosomal gel and antiacne cream of TRA and BPO showed that the niosomal gel was more efficacious than the antiacne cream because niosomal gels with a 4.16-fold lower dose of BPO provided the same therapeutic index at targeted sites in comparison to the antiacne cream.
