Recent Advances in Flexible Multifunctional Sensors

Wearable electronics have received extensive attention in human-machine interactions, robotics, and health monitoring. The use of multifunctional sensors that are capable of measuring a variety of mechanical or environmental stimuli can provide new functionalities for wearable electronics. Advancements in material science and system integration technologies have contributed to the development of high-performance flexible multifunctional sensors. This review presents the main approaches, based on functional materials and device structures, to improve sensing parameters, including linearity, detection range, and sensitivity to various stimuli. The details of electrical, biocompatible, and mechanical properties of self-powered sensors and wearable wireless systems are systematically elaborated. Finally, the current challenges and future developmental directions are discussed to offer a guide to fabricate advanced multifunctional sensors.

Sensing materials for fresh food quality deterioration measurement: a review of research progress and application in supply chain

Fresh food are consumed in large quantities worldwide. During the supply chain, microbial growth in fresh food can lead to the production of a number of metabolites, which make food highly susceptible to spoilage and contamination. The quality of fresh food changes in terms of smell, tenderness, color and texture, which causes a decrease in freshness and consumers acceptance. Therefore, the quality monitoring of fresh food has become an essential part in the supply chain. As traditional analysis methods are highly specialized, expensive and have a small scope of application, which cannot be applied to the supply chain to realize real-time monitoring. Recently, sensing materials have received a lot of attention from researchers due to the low price, high sensitivity and high speed. However, the progress of research on sensing materials has not been critically evaluated. The study examines the progress of research in the application of sensing materials for fresh food quality monitoring. Meanwhile, indicator compounds for spoilage of fresh food are analyzed. Moreover, some suggestions for future research directions are given.

Paper-Based Humidity Sensors as Promising Flexible Devices: State of the Art: Part 1. General Consideration

In the first part of the review article "General considerations" we give information about conventional flexible platforms and consider the advantages and disadvantages of paper when used in humidity sensors, both as a substrate and as a humidity-sensitive material. This consideration shows that paper, especially nanopaper, is a very promising material for the development of low-cost flexible humidity sensors suitable for a wide range of applications. Various humidity-sensitive materials suitable for use in paper-based sensors are analyzed and the humidity-sensitive characteristics of paper and other humidity-sensitive materials are compared. Various configurations of humidity sensors that can be developed on the basis of paper are considered, and a description of the mechanisms of their operation is given. Next, we discuss the manufacturing features of paper-based humidity sensors. The main attention is paid to the consideration of such problems as patterning and electrode formation. It is shown that printing technologies are the most suitable for mass production of paper-based flexible humidity sensors. At the same time, these technologies are effective both in the formation of a humidity-sensitive layer and in the manufacture of electrodes.

Paper-Based Hydrogen Sensors Using Ultrathin Palladium Nanowires

Hydrogen (H₂), as a chemical energy carrier, is a cleaner alternative to conventional fossil fuels with zero carbon emission and high energy density. The development of fast, low-cost, and sensitive H₂ detection systems is important for the widespread adoption of H₂ technologies. Paper is an environment-friendly, porous, and flexible material with great potential for use in sustainable electronics. Here, we report a paper-based sensor for room-temperature H₂ detection using ultrathin palladium nanowires (PdNWs). To elucidate the sensing mechanism, we compare the performance of polycrystalline and quasi-single-crystalline PdNWs. The polycrystalline PdNWs showed a response of 4.3% to 1 vol % H₂ with response and recovery times of 4.9 and 10.6 s, while quasi-single-crystalline PdNWs showed a response of 8% to 1 vol % H₂ with response and recovery times of 9.3 and 13.0 s, respectively. The polycrystalline PdNWs show excellent selectivity, stability, and sensitivity, with a limit of detection of 10 ppm H₂ in air. The fast response of ultrathin polycrystalline PdNW paper-based sensors arises from the synergistic effects of their ultrasmall diameter, high-index surface facets, strain-coupled grain boundaries, and porous paper substrate. This paper-based sensor is one of the fastest chemiresistive H₂ sensors reported and is potentially orders of magnitude less expensive than current state-of-the-art H₂-sensing solutions. This brings low-cost, room-temperature chemiresistive H₂ sensing closer to the performance of ultrafast optical sensors and high-temperature metal oxide-based sensors.

Metal Oxide Heterostructures for Improving Gas Sensing Properties: A Review

Metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors are widely used to detect toxic and inflammable gases in industrial production and daily life. The main research hotspot in this field is the synthesis of gas sensing materials. Previous studies have shown that incorporating two or more metal oxides to form a heterojunction interface can exhibit superior gas sensing performance in response and selectivity compared with single phase. This review focuses on mainly the synthesis methods and gas sensing mechanisms of metal oxide heterostructures. A significant number of heterostructures with different morphologies and shapes have been fabricated, which exhibit specific sensing performance toward a specific target gas. Among these synthesis methods, the hydrothermal method is noteworthy due to the fabrication of diverse structures, such as nanorod-like, nanoflower-like, and hollow sphere structures with enhanced sensing properties. In addition, it should be noted that the combination of different synthesis methods is also an efficient way to obtain metal oxide heterostructures with novel morphologies. Despite advanced methods in the metal oxide semiconductors and nanotechnology field, there are still some new issues which deserve further investigation, such as long-term chemical stability of sensing materials, reproducibility of the fabrication process, and selectivity toward homogeneous gases. Moreover, the gas sensing mechanism of metal oxide heterostructures is controversial. It should be clarified so as to further integrate laboratory theory research with practical exploitation.

Humidity Sensors Based on Metal-Organic Frameworks

Humidity sensors are important in industrial fields and human activities. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives are a class of promising humidity-sensing materials with the characteristics of a large specific surface area, high porosity, modifiable frameworks, and high stability. The drawbacks of MOFs, such as poor film formation, low electrical conductivity, and limited hydrophilicity, have been gradually overcome with the development of material science. Currently, it is moving towards a critical development stage of MOF-based humidity sensors from usability to ease of use, of which great challenges remain unsolved. In order to better understand the related challenges and point out the direction for the future development of MOF-based humidity sensors, we reviewed the development of such sensors based on related published work, focusing on six primary types (impedance, capacitive, resistive, fluorescent, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and others) and analyzed the sensing mechanism, material design, and sensing performance involved, and presented our thoughts on the possible future research directions.

Design considerations for piezocomposite materials for electrical stimulation in medical implants

Incidence of non-union following long bone fracture fixation and spinal fusion procedures is increasing, and very costly for patients and the medical system. Direct current (DC) electrical stimulation has shown success as an adjunct therapy to stimulate bone healing and increase surgery success rates, though drawbacks of current devices and implantable battery packs have limited widespread use. Energy harvesting utilising piezoelectric materials has been widely studied for powering devices without a battery, and a preclinical animal study has shown efficacy of a piezocomposite spinal fusion implant resulting in faster, more robust fusion. Most piezoelectric energy harvesters operate most effectively at high frequencies, limiting power generation from loads experienced by orthopaedic implants during human motion. This work characterises the efficient power generation capability of a novel composite piezoelectric material under simulated walking loads. Building on compliant layer adaptive composite stacks (CLACS), the power generation of mixed-mode CLACS (MMCLACS) is defined. Utilising poling direction to capitalise on in-plane strain generation due to compliant layer expansion, MMCLACS significantly increased power output compared to a standard piezo stack. The combination of radial and through-thickness poled piezoelectric elements within a stack to create MMCLACS significantly increases power generation under low-frequency dynamic loads. This technology can be adapted to a variety of architectures and assembled as a load-bearing energy harvester within current implants. MMCLACS integrated with implants would provide enough power to deliver bone healing electrical stimulation directly to the fusion site, decreasing non-union rates, and also could provide quantitative assessment of healing progression through load sensing.

The Utility of Breath Analysis in the Diagnosis and Staging of Parkinson's Disease

BACKGROUND

The analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) collected in breath samples has the potential to be a rapid, non-invasive test to aid in the clinical diagnosis and tracking of chronic conditions such as Parkinson's disease (PD).

OBJECTIVE

To assess the feasibility and utility of breath sample analysis done, both at point of collection in clinic and when sent away to be analyzed remotely, to diagnose, stratify and monitor disease course in a moderately large cohort of patients with PD.

METHODS

Breath samples were collected from 177 people with PD and 37 healthy matched control individuals followed over time. Standard clinical data (MDS-UPDRS & cognitive assessments) from the PD patients were collected at the same time as the breath sample was taken, these measures were then correlated with the breath test analysis of exhaled VOCs.

RESULTS

The breath test was able to distinguish patients with PD from healthy control participants and correlated with disease stage. The off-line system (remote analysis) gave good results with overall classification accuracies across a range of clinical measures of between 73.6% to 95.6%. The on-line (in clinic) system showed comparable results but with lower levels of correlation, varying between 33.5% to 82.4%. Chemical analysis identified 29 potential molecules that were different and which may relate to pathogenic pathways in PD.

CONCLUSION

Breath analysis shows potential for PD diagnostics and monitoring. Both off-line and on-line sensor systems were easy to do and provided comparable results which will enable this technique to be easily adopted in clinic if larger studies confirm our findings.

Gas sensing materials roadmap

Gas sensor technology is widely utilized in various areas ranging from home security, environment and air pollution, to industrial production. It also hold great promise in non-invasive exhaled breath detection and an essential device in future internet of things. The past decade has witnessed giant advance in both fundamental research and industrial development of gas sensors, yet current efforts are being explored to achieve better selectivity, higher sensitivity and lower power consumption. The sensing layer in gas sensors have attracted dominant attention in the past research. In addition to the conventional metal oxide semiconductors, emerging nanocomposites and graphene-like two-dimensional materials also have drawn considerable research interest. This inspires us to organize this comprehensive 2020 gas sensing materials roadmap to discuss the current status, state-of-the-art progress, and present and future challenges in various materials that is potentially useful for gas sensors.

A Review on Advanced Sensing Materials for Agricultural Gas Sensors

This work is a comprehensive review of sensing materials, which interact with several target gases pertinent to agricultural monitoring applications. Sensing materials which interact with carbon dioxide, water vapor (relative humidity), hydrogen sulfide, ethylene and ethanol are the focus of this work. Performance characteristics such as dynamic range, recovery time, operating temperature, long-term stability and method of deposition are discussed to determine the commercial viability of the sensing materials considered in this work. In addition to the sensing materials, deposition methods are considered to obtain the desired sensing material thickness based on the sensor's mechanism of operation. Various material classes including metal oxides, conductive polymers and carbon allotropes are included in this review. By implementing multiple sensing materials to detect a single target analyte, the issue of selectivity due to cross sensitivity can be mitigated. For this reason, where possible, it is desirable to utilize more than one sensing material to monitor a single target gas. Among those considered in this work, it is observed that PEDOT PSS/graphene and TiO2-coated g-C3N4 NS are best suited for CO2 detection, given their wide dynamic range and modest operating temperature. To monitor the presence of ethylene, BMIM-NTf2, SWCNTs and PtTiO2 offer a dynamic range most suitable for the application and require no active heating. Due to the wide dynamic range offered by SiO2/Si nanowires, this material is best suited for the detection of ethanol; a gas artificially introduced to prolong the shelf life of the harvested crop. Finally, among all other sensing materials investigated, it observed that both SWCNTs and CNTs/SnO2/CuO are most suitable for H2S detection in the given application.

Blood Pressure Sensors: Materials, Fabrication Methods, Performance Evaluations and Future Perspectives

Advancements in materials science and fabrication techniques have contributed to the significant growing attention to a wide variety of sensors for digital healthcare. While the progress in this area is tremendously impressive, few wearable sensors with the capability of real-time blood pressure monitoring are approved for clinical use. One of the key obstacles in the further development of wearable sensors for medical applications is the lack of comprehensive technical evaluation of sensor materials against the expected clinical performance. Here, we present an extensive review and critical analysis of various materials applied in the design and fabrication of wearable sensors. In our unique transdisciplinary approach, we studied the fundamentals of blood pressure and examined its measuring modalities while focusing on their clinical use and sensing principles to identify material functionalities. Then, we carefully reviewed various categories of functional materials utilized in sensor building blocks allowing for comparative analysis of the performance of a wide range of materials throughout the sensor operational-life cycle. Not only this provides essential data to enhance the materials' properties and optimize their performance, but also, it highlights new perspectives and provides suggestions to develop the next generation pressure sensors for clinical use.

Paper-Based Sensors for Gas, Humidity, and Strain Detections: A Review

Paper, as a flexible, low-cost, lightweight, tailorable, environmental-friendly, degradable, and renewable material, is emerging in electronic devices. Especially, many kinds of paper-based (PB) sensors have been reported for wearable applications in recent years. Among them, the PB gas, humidity, and strain sensors are widely studied for monitoring gas, humidity, and strain from the human body and the environment. However, gas, humidity, and strain often coexist and interact, and the paper itself is hydrophilic and flexible, resulting in that it is still challenging to develop high-performance PB sensors specialized for gas, humidity, and strain detections. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize and discuss them systematically. In this review, we focus on summarizing the state-of-art studies of the PB gas, humidity, and strain sensors. Specifically, the fabrications (electrodes and sensing materials) and applications of PB gas, humidity, and strain sensors are summarized and discussed. The current challenges and the potential trends of PB sensors for gas, humidity, and strain detections are also outlined. This review not only can help readers to understand the development status of the PB gas, humidity, and strain sensors but also is helpful for readers to find out and solve the problems in this field through comparative reading.

Chipless RFID Sensors for the Internet of Things: Challenges and Opportunities

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) sensors are one of the fundamental components of the internet of things that aims at connecting every physical object to the cloud for the exchange of information. In this framework, chipless RFIDs are a breakthrough technology because they remove the cost associated with the chip, being at the same time printable, passive, low-power and suitable for harsh environments. After the important results achieved with multibit chipless tags, there is a clear motivation and interest to extend the chipless sensing functionality to physical, chemical, structural and environmental parameters. These potentialities triggered a strong interest in the scientific and industrial community towards this type of application. Temperature and humidity sensors, as well as localization, proximity, and structural health prototypes, have already been demonstrated, and many other sensing applications are foreseen soon. In this review, both the different architectural approaches available for this technology and the requirements related to the materials employed for sensing are summarized. Then, the state-of-the-art of categories of sensors and their applications are reported and discussed. Finally, an analysis of the current limitations and possible solution strategies for this technology are given, together with an overview of expected future developments.

A Review of Chipless Remote Sensing Solutions Based on RFID Technology

Chipless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been used in a variety of remote sensing applications and is currently a hot research topic. To date, there have been a large number of chipless RFID tags developed in both academia and in industry that boast a large variation in design characteristics. This review paper sets out to discuss the various design aspects needed in a chipless RFID sensor. Such aspects include: (1) Addressing strategies to allow for unique identification of the tag, (2) Sensing mechanisms used to allow for impedance-based response signal modulation and (3) Sensing materials to introduce the desired impedance change when under the influence of the target stimulus. From the tabular comparison of the various sensing and addressing techniques, it is concluded that although many sensors provide adequate performance characteristics, more work is needed to ensure that this technology is capable/robust enough to operate in many of the applications it has been earmarked for.

3D Hollow Quasi-Graphite Capsules/Polyaniline Hybrid with a High Performance for Room-Temperature Ammonia Gas Sensors

Designing sensing materials with novel morphologies and compositions is eminently challenging to achieve high-performance gas sensor devices. Herein, an in situ oxidative polymerization approach is developed to construct three-dimensional (3D) hollow quasi-graphite capsules/polyaniline (GCs/PANI) hierarchical hybrids by decorating protonated PANI on the surface of GCs; as a result, an immensely active and sensitive material was developed for sensing ammonia gas at room temperature. Moreover, the GCs possessed a capsule-like hollow/open structure with partially graphitized walls, and PANI nanospheres were uniformly decorated on the GC surfaces. Furthermore, the inflexible and rigid 3D ordered chemistry of these materials provides the resulting hybrids with a large interfacial surface area, which not only allows for rapid adsorption and charge transfer but also provides the necessary structural stability. The 3D hollow GCs/PANI hybrids exhibit excellent performance; the GCs/PANI-3 hybrid is highly sensitive (with a response value of 1.30) toward 10 ppm NH₃ gas and has short response and recovery times of 34 and 42 s, respectively. The GCs/PANI-3 hybrid also demonstrates a good selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability, which are attributed to the substantial synergistic effect of the GCs and PANI. The design of such a unique 3D ordered framework provides a promising pathway to achieve room-temperature gas sensors for commercial applications.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds by a Freestanding Aligned Ag/CdSe-CdS/PMMA Texture with Double-Side UV-Ozone Treatment

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemicals having a high vapor pressure at room temperature. Chronic exposure to VOC vapor can be potentially dangerous to human health. In this study, we build a high-performance freestanding aligned Ag/CdSe-CdS/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) texture to detect VOC vapors. The insight of this new VOC-sensing material is based on electrospinning techniques, ultraviolet (UV)/ozone treatments, and nano-optics. The incorporation of CdSe-CdS core-shell quantum rods (QR) and silver nanocrystals in the PMMA nanofibers amplifies the polarization response of long rods in VOC detection, thus increasing the sensitivity of VOC-sensing materials. Further, the uniaxial aligned Ag/QR/PMMA sensing material was treated by UV-ozone etching to increase surface absorption. The advanced double-sided UV-ozone etching on the uniaxial aligned Ag/QR/PMMA efficiently enhanced the extinction changes of VOCs. Two categories of solvents, typical VOCs and alcoholic VOCs, were put into practical tests for the Ag/QR/PMMA VOC-sensing materials. The Ag/QR/PMMA reached the detection limit for 100 ppm butanol within 1 min. The freestanding aligned Ag/CdSe-CdS/PMMA texture is a newly designed nanocomposite device for environmental risk monitoring. It can be accepted by the market compared to the other highly sensitive commercial VOC-sensing materials.

Amorphous Europium Hexaboride: A Potential Room Temperature Formaldehyde Sensing Material

Amorphous EuB₆ was successfully prepared having a high specific surface area (221.3 m² g^-1) via the reaction between EuCl₃ and B₂H₆ in the presence of liquid plasma in an ionic liquid environment. The material exhibits an immediate, lasting, and highly selective response toward formaldehyde at room temperature with a detection limit of 50 ppb. The good sensing performance of the amorphous EuB₆ material is attributed to the strong interaction between formaldehyde and the increased number of accessible electron-rich surface Eu sites.

Emerging Multifunctional Metal-Organic Framework Materials

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), also known as coordination polymers, represent an interesting type of solid crystalline materials that can be straightforwardly self-assembled through the coordination of metal ions/clusters with organic linkers. Owing to the modular nature and mild conditions of MOF synthesis, the porosities of MOF materials can be systematically tuned by judicious selection of molecular building blocks, and a variety of functional sites/groups can be introduced into metal ions/clusters, organic linkers, or pore spaces through pre-designing or post-synthetic approaches. These unique advantages enable MOFs to be used as a highly versatile and tunable platform for exploring multifunctional MOF materials. Here, the bright potential of MOF materials as emerging multifunctional materials is highlighted in some of the most important applications for gas storage and separation, optical, electric and magnetic materials, chemical sensing, catalysis, and biomedicine.

A survey on gas sensing technology

Sensing technology has been widely investigated and utilized for gas detection. Due to the different applicability and inherent limitations of different gas sensing technologies, researchers have been working on different scenarios with enhanced gas sensor calibration. This paper reviews the descriptions, evaluation, comparison and recent developments in existing gas sensing technologies. A classification of sensing technologies is given, based on the variation of electrical and other properties. Detailed introduction to sensing methods based on electrical variation is discussed through further classification according to sensing materials, including metal oxide semiconductors, polymers, carbon nanotubes, and moisture absorbing materials. Methods based on other kinds of variations such as optical, calorimetric, acoustic and gas-chromatographic, are presented in a general way. Several suggestions related to future development are also discussed. Furthermore, this paper focuses on sensitivity and selectivity for performance indicators to compare different sensing technologies, analyzes the factors that influence these two indicators, and lists several corresponding improved approaches.
