Abstract
Gangliocytic paraganglioma (GP) is quite rare, and origin and entity remain to be elucidated. A 51-year-old man presented with GP as a sessile polyp with a smooth surface that measured about 1 cm in diameter in the descending portion of duodenum. Pathological examination displayed that a neoplasm was predominantly located in the submucosa and infiltrated mucosa focally. The tumor consisted of epithelioid, ganglion-like, and spindle cells admixing in a haphazard way. The epithelioid cells resembled paraganglioma in cytological and architectural features. The ganglion-like cells were scattered and merged with the bland spindle cells in fascicular clusters, which resembled ganglioneuroma. Synaptophysin (Syn), microtubule-associated protein-2 (MAP-2), and chromogranin A (CgA) were positive in the epithelioid and ganglion-like cells in variety, and neurofilament (NF) staining highlighted the ganglion-like cells. S-100 and SOX-10 were positive in the spindle cell proliferation and around the epithelioid cells. Progesterone receptor (PR) was positive in the epithelioid cells. The polyp was resected, and no adjuvant therapy was given. The patient remained with no recurrence in 2 years' follow-up. Origin of GP is presumed to be related to pancreas islet. GP is distinguished from neuroendocrine tumor (NET) G1 and designated as paraganglioma-ganglioneuroma, a kind of composite paragangliomas.

Ganglioneuromas across age groups: Systematic review of individual patient data. Clin Endocrinol (Oxf) 2021; 94:12-23. [PMID: 32702779 DOI: 10.1111/cen.14297] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/18/2020] [Revised: 06/23/2020] [Accepted: 07/13/2020] [Indexed: 12/18/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Ganglioneuromas are very rare tumours of the sympathetic nervous system. Clinical and pathological knowledge is currently based on largely incomparable registries and case series that focus on paediatric or adrenal cases. To comprehensively characterize the full clinical spectrum across ages and locations, a meta-analysis was performed where amenable and complemented by systematic literature review of individual patient data (IPD). DESIGN Articles containing "ganglioneuroma" in English on humans, published from 1/1/1995-6/27/2018, were identified from PubMed. Aggregate data from 10 eligible patient series on 19 variables were considerably inhomogeneous, restricting meta-analysis to age and gender distribution. To determine basic disease characteristics across ages and locations, IPD were retrieved from case reports and small case series (PROSPERO CRD42018010247). RESULTS Individual patient data representing 364 cases revealed that 65.7% (60.6%-70.4%) were diagnosed in adults, more frequently in females (62%, 56.9%-66.9%). 24.5% (20.3%-39.1%) were discovered incidentally. Most often, ganglioneuromas developed in abdomen/pelvis (66.2, 32.1% adrenal). With age, the proportion of ganglioneuroma localizations with high post-surgical complication rate (35.6% head/neck and 16.3% thorax) decreased. Contrarily, the diagnosis of adrenal ganglioneuromas (<1% post-surgical complications) increased with age. Hormone production, hypertension or coincidence with another non-neuroblastic neural-crest-derived tumour component was more common for adrenal location. Recurrence and metastatic spread have not been reported for ganglioneuromas without secondary tumour component. CONCLUSIONS This work summarizes characteristics of the currently largest number of international GN patients across all ages. The data confirm a benign nature of GN, independent of age. Age-related differences in predominant tumour location, associated post-surgical complications and hormone production suggest case-centred management strategies.

Abstract
Ganglioneuromas (GNs) are well-differentiated, slow-growing, benign tumors that are quite rare and usually found in the posterior mediastinum and retroperitoneum. They are composed of ganglion and Schwann cells and their origin remains in dispute. GNs have been reported as intraosseous lesions, such as in temporal and orbital bones. There are rare reports of intracranial lesions, mostly in the pituitary fossa. Most GN patients are children and are clinically asymptomatic. Diagnosis of GN requires histopathologic evaluation since no specific clinical or radiologic diagnostic features have been identified. We report the case of a 35-year-old man with recurrent sinusitis whose radiologic workup revealed a lytic right sphenoid wing lesion with microcalcifications. He underwent gross-total resection of the lesion and the pathologic findings were diagnostic of ganglioneuroma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of sphenoid wing GN. The nature and origin of this tumor are discussed, and the GN literature is reviewed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tumours are a well-recognized cause of medically intractable epilepsies. Tumours represent the primary pathology in 10%-30% of patients undergoing surgical treatment for chronic epilepsy. This study examines the surgical and epileptological outcome of adults with temporal lobe tumoural epilepsy treated within a comprehensive epilepsy surgery programme. METHODS Between 1999 and 2004, 99 consecutive patients have been operated for intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Among these, 14 adult patients exhibited temporal lobe neoplasms associated with TLE. Every patient underwent a comprehensive presurgical evaluation including video-EEG monitoring, MRI, interictal PET scan, ictal SPECT and neuropsychological testing. Surgical strategies were determined in an interdisciplinary seizure conference and tailored to the findings of the presurgical evaluation. All patients were available for follow up at regular intervals after 3, 6, 12 months and yearly thereafter. Epileptological outcome was classified according to Engel [10] and the ILAE (International League Against Epilepsy)/systems [33]. FINDINGS The surgical procedures performed were temporal lobe resection in 3 patients, extended lesionectomy in 4 and extended lesionectomy with resection of the temporomesial structures in 7. One patient with an astrocytoma grade III underwent a second and third operation for recurrent disease. Histological results: Astrocytoma 5 patients, ganglioglioma/gangliocytoma 5, oligodendroglioma 2, ependymoma 1 and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumour (DNET) 1. Postoperative follow-up was performed after 12-74 months (mean 31). The outcome according to the Engel classification indicated class IA in 9 patients, class IC in 3, and 1 each in classes IIIA and IVA. Epileptological outcome according to the ILAE classification indicated class 1 (12 patients) and class 4 (2 patients). Surgical mortality was zero and mild permanent neurological deficits due to surgery were seen in 2 patients. Postoperatively 3 patients showed a homonymous quadrantanopia. CONCLUSIONS Patients with drug resistant epilepsy and temporal lobe tumours should undergo evaluation in dedicated epilepsy surgery programmes.

Abstract
Various histologic types of neurogenic tumors may originate in the mediastinum and chest wall. It is possible to make accurate diagnosis of these tumors by using the multiplanar capability and high contrast resolution of MR imaging because of these characteristic imaging findings. MR and histologic features of these tumors are illustrated and described in this essay.

Lymphohistiocytoid mesothelioma. An often misdiagnosed variant of sarcomatoid malignant mesothelioma. Am J Clin Pathol 2000; 113:649-54. Abstract
Three cases of lympho-histiocytoid mesothelioma, a rare variant of pleural sarcomatoid malignant mesothelioma, are described. Histologically, the neoplasms were characterized by a diffuse discohesive proliferation of atypical histiocytoid cells intermixed with a marked lymphocytic and lesser plasmacytic infiltrate. One case initially was misdiagnosed as a ganglioneuroma, a second case was misinterpreted as malignant lymphoma, and a third case was sent in consultation with the differential diagnosis of inflammatory pseudotumor vs mesothelioma. Immunohistochemical studies showed strong and generalized expression of cytokeratins and vimentin by the neoplastic histiocytoid cells in all 3 cases. Two cases were positive for calretinin, one of which also was positive for HBME-1, thrombomodulin, and LeuM1. None of the cases stained with the epithelial glycoprotein markers carcinoembryonic antigen, B72.3, and Ber-EP4, or the blood group antigen, BG-8. The immunophenotype of the lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate revealed predominantly reactive, mature T cells, with fewer polytypic plasma cells, histiocytes, and B cells. In lymphohistiocytoid mesothelioma, as in the usual examples of sarcomatoid mesothelioma, the demonstration of cytokeratin expression by the neoplastic cells is the most useful diagnostic finding that allows exclusion of other neoplasms with which this entity may be confused.

Abstract
1. Eight cases of intraneural ganglion of the lateral popliteal nerve seen at operation within a period of six years are described. 2. In seven of these a pedicle was found arising from the superior tibio-fibular joint–it was probably present in the remaining case. 3. The essential step at operation is to find and extirpate the pedicle. 4. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
Thirty-nine patients with neurogenic tumors observed between 1974 to 1992 were reviewed. There were 32 patients with neurilemoma, one with neurofibroma, five with ganglioneuroma, and one with malignant neurilemoma. Two cases of neurilemoma originated from the vagus nerve, which is very rare. Surgical resection is recommended, not only to confirm the nature of the lesion, but also to prevent further growth and compression on adjacent structures. For benign encapsulated neurogenic tumors, resection is curative.

Abstract
A 43-year-old male presented with upper gastro-intestinal bleeding. A polypoid tumor mass in the second part of the duodenum was found by endoscopic examination. Pathology revealed an extremely rare case of ganglioneuroma. The surgical local resection of the tumor was a sufficient procedure because of a lack of malignant potential. This is the fourth case since the first case was reported by Dahl et al in 1957 (1). We review the literature concerning duodenal paragangliomas, and discuss the histogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The neuropeptide contents in neuroblastomas were quantified by radioimmunoassay (RIA) to assess their possible biologic significance. METHODS Neuroblastoma tumor tissue was obtained from the primary tumor site before therapy in 16 patients with newly diagnosed neuroblastoma and in 7 patients with central nervous system medulloblastomas or gliomas. RESULTS The tumor tissue was assayed for vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), somatostatin (SRIF), substance P, and neurotensin by both immunostaining and RIA techniques. Increased VIP levels of 1.2 pg/micrograms DNA or more correlated significantly with cellular differentiation (P = 0.003) and favorable disease stage (P = 0.002) in neuroblastomas. Increased SRIF contents (greater than 1.3 pg/micrograms DNA) correlated with differentiation of the tumor (P = 0.002). Increased VIP and SRIF content did not correlate with N-myc oncogene expression or ras oncogene protein immunostaining. No VIP was detectable in brain tumors, and other neuropeptides were variable in content. CONCLUSIONS RIA of VIP and SRIF levels in primary tumor tissue may offer an independent objective assay of biologic behavior in neuroblastoma biopsy specimens.

Abstract
A 50-year-old woman was admitted under a diagnosis of abdominal tumor. Ultrasonography and CT scanning were performed, and a right retroperitoneal tumor was detected. Absolute curative resection was performed. The resected tumor was 13.5 x 11.5 x 9.0 cm, and histologically diagnosed as ganglioneuroma. To our knowledge, 99 cases have been reported in Japan. During a twelve-month follow-up period, the postoperative course was uneventful and no recurrence had been noted.

Abstract
We have experienced 3 cases of retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma. One case was in a 5-year-old boy with the chief complaint of abdominal mass. The preoperative diagnosis was neuroblastoma due to excessive urinary excretion of vanillylmandelic acid. The other two cases were in adults, 40 and 28 years old, and were found incidentally. All three cases were doing well without any clinical signs of recurrence almost 10 years, 5 years, and 6 months, postoperatively. The literature is reviewed briefly concerning some cases in children under 5 years of age whose ganglioneuromas were sometimes confused with neuroblastoma because of excessive catecholamines.

Abstract
The authors describe ten cases of these rare tumours. They run through rapidly the histological and anatomical classifications. The cases consist of 8 schwannomas (one retropharyngeal schwannoma, two which had developed in the anterior sub-parotid space one of them a malignant schwannoma, the other two were two schwannomas of the sympathetic and three schwannomas of the X). A ganglioneuroma of the sympathetic and a paraganglioma of the X are also described. The authors draw attention to the clinical and anatomopathological distinction between the anterior and posterior sub-parotid spaces; to the need to treat tumours which develop there by surgery; to the different surgical techniques and methods of approach.
