Preparation of polylactic acid (PLA) films plasticized with a renewable and natural Liquidambar Orientalis oil

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a brittle biodegradable thermoplastic due to its relatively high glass transition temperature (Tg ∼ 60 °C). This Tg limits the using of PLA in flexible applications, for example packaging films. In this study, it has been shown for the first time that the Liquidambar Orientalis (LO) oil as a nontoxic, environmentally friendly, and green additive can be successfully used as a natural, renewable, and sustainable plasticizer to produce flexible PLA parts and improve its thermal and physical properties and application potential. Natural oil obtained from Liquidambar Orientalis tree was introduced into PLA (as 10, 20, and 30 phr) by melt compounding (MC) and solution mixing (SM) methods. Effect of LO oil amount on the glass transition temperature, melt and cold crystallization behaviors, and degree of crystallinity values of samples were determined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In addition, solid state viscoelastic properties of PLA films were also characterized with dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests. Results showed that LO oil significantly reduced the Tg and storage modulus (E') value of PLA and LO oil showed an excellent plasticizing effect for PLA due to reducing strong hydrogen bonds and secondary interactions between PLA chains.

Effects of grafting on chemical constituents, toxicological properties, antithrombotic activity, and myocardial infarction protection of styrax secreted from the trunk of Liquidambar orientalis Mill

Styrax, the balsam refined from the trunk of Liquidambar orientalis Mill. has a variety of applications in the perfumery and medical industry, especially for use in traditional Chinese medicine. However, the resources of styrax are in shortage due to being endangered of this plant. Grafting can improve the adaptability of plants to unfavorable environmental conditions. We tried to graft the L. orientalis Mill. on L. formosana Hance which was widely distributed in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces of China in an attempt to obtain styrax from grafted L. orientalis Mill. (grafted styrax, SG). Whether SG can become an alternative application of commercially available styrax (SC) need be further investigated. The components of SG were analyzed by GC-MS, and the results showed that the chromatograms of SG, SC, and styrax standard (SS) were consistent. The ration of 12 major chemical components based peak area in SG, SC, and SS were 93.95%, 94.24%, and 95.86% respectively. The assessment of toxicity, antithrombotic activity, and myocardial infarction protection of SG and SC was evaluated by using the zebrafish model, the results showed that SG and SC have the similar toxicological properties as evidenced by acute toxicity test, developmental toxicity and teratogenicity, and long-term toxicity test. Both SG and SC significantly decreased the thrombosis and increased blood flow velocity of zebrafish induced by adrenaline hydrochloride, inhibited myocardial apoptosis, myocardial infarction and myocardial inflammation in zebrafish induced by isoproterenol hydrochloride. Moreover, SG had an obvious improvement effect on cardiac output, while SC has no effect. Collectively, SG is similar to SC in chemical composition, toxicological properties, antithrombotic activity, and myocardial infarction protection effects, and may be used as a substitute for styrax to reduce the collection for wild L. orientalis Mill. and increase the available styrax resources.

3D printed Styrax Liquidus (Liquidambar orientalis Miller)-loaded poly (L-lactic acid)/chitosan based wound dressing material: Fabrication, characterization, and biocompatibility results

The medicinal plant of Styrax liquidus (ST) (sweet gum balsam) which extracted from Liquidambar orientalis Mill tree, was loaded into the 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA)/chitosan (CS) based 3D printed scaffolds to investigate its wound healing and closure effect, in this study. The morphological and chemical properties of the ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds with different concentrations (1 %, 2 %, and 3 % wt) were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively. In addition, the mechanical and thermal properties of the materials were investigated by Tensile test and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The antimicrobial activities of the ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds and their incubation media in the PBS (pH 7.4, at 37 °C for 24 h) were investigated on two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative standard pathogenic bacteria with the agar disc diffusion method. The colorimetric MTT assay was used to determine the cell viability of human fibroblast cells (CCD-1072Sk) incubated with free ST, ST loaded, and unloaded 3D printed scaffolds. The 1 % and 2 % (wt) ST loaded PLA/CS/ST 3D printed scaffolds showed an increase in the cell number. Annexin V/PI double stain assay was performed to test whether early or late apoptosis was induced in the PLA/CS/1 % ST and PLA/CS/2 % ST loaded groups and the results were consistent with the MTT assay. Furthermore, a wound healing assay was carried out to investigate the effect of ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds on wound healing in CCD-1072Sk cells. The highest wound closure compared to the control group was observed on cells treated with PLA/CS/1 % ST for 72 h. According to the results, novel biocompatible ST loaded 3D printed scaffolds with antimicrobial effect can be used as wound healing material for potential tissue engineering applications.

A new species of the mealybug genus Ceroputo Šulc 1898 (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae) from China, and notes on Ceroputo pilosellae Šulc 1898 in China

A new mealybug species, Ceroputo liquidambaris Zhang & Watson sp. n. (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Pseudococcidae), collected on leaves and branches of Liquidambar formosana (Altingiaceae), is described and illustrated from Jiangxi, China. The new species differs from all other known species of Ceroputo in having dorsal multilocular disc pores. Notes on some aspects of Ceroputo pilosellae Šulc collected in China and a key to the adult females of Ceroputo species are provided.

Evaluation of Ecological Service Function of Liquidambar formosana Plantations

A Liquidambar formosana plantation is a kind of fast-grown forest in the subtropical region, providing a variety of ecosystem services such as superior wood, carbon fixation and oxygen release, and biodiversity maintenance. However, the ecological service function value of Liquidambar formosana plantations is not clear. To gain insights into the characteristics and importance of its ecological and economic benefits, the Liquidambar formosana plantation in the Tianjiling Forest Farm of Changsha City was taken as the specific research object in this paper. The ecological service function evaluation index system for Liquidambar formosana plantations was established based on the relevant research worldwide and the actual situation. The market value method, shadow engineering method, carbon tax method, and other environmental economics methods were used to estimate the value of seven ecological service functions (including organic matter production, carbon fixation and oxygen release, water conservation, soil conservation, soil improvement, air purification, and biodiversity maintenance) of the forest of Liquidambar formosana. The results indicated that the total economic value of ecological service function provided by the Liquidambar formosana plantation of Changsha was 103,277.82 RMB/(hm²·a), and the indirect economic value was 8.47 times that of the direct economic value. Among the seven ecological service functions, the value of carbon fixation and oxygen release was the highest (36,703.33 RMB·hm^-2·a^-1), thus suggesting that the Liquidambar formosana plantation had strong photosynthesis and significant carbon fixation. This study directly reflects the value of forest ecological service function in the form of currency, which is beneficial to provide more insights into forest ecological service function so as to provide basic data and a scientific basis for the protection, construction, and promotion of the sustainable utilization and development of urban forest resources.

Pentacyclic Triterpenes from the resin of Liquidambar formosana have anti-angiogenic properties

Phytochemical investigation of the resin of Liquidambar formosana Hanc led to the separation and identification of five undescribed pentacyclic triterpenoids, including two lupane type, one taraxerane type, and two oleanane type triterpenoids, in addition to ten known analogues. Structures and relative or absolute configurations were elucidated by intensive spectroscopic methods, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their anti-angiogenic effects in vitro against VEGF-induced endothelial cell proliferation and migration in HUVECs. Among them, (5R, 8R, 9R, 10R, 13S, 14R, 17R, 18R, 19S)-17,18-epoxy-17,18-seco-28-norlupa-17- hydroxy-20 (29) -ene-3-one, (5R, 8R, 9R, 10R, 13S, 14R, 17S, 18S, 19S, 20S)-17, 20-peroxy-28- norlupa -29 -hydroxy- 3-one, 11α,12α:13β,28-diepoxyoleanane- 3-one, 28-norlup-20 (29)-ene- 3β,17β-diol, liquidambaric lactone and 13,28-epoxy-11- oleanene- 3-one significantly inhibited VEGF-induced HUVECs proliferation with IC₅₀ values ranging from 1.64 ± 0.36 to 7.06 ± 0.28 μM. In addition, they also effectively decreased VEGF-induced cell migration with IC₅₀ values ranging from 1.57 ± 0.60 to 4.77 ± 0.62 μM. The structure-activity relationship of these compounds is discussed. The anti-angiogenic property of (5R, 8R, 9R, 10R, 13S, 14R, 17R, 18R, 19S)-17,18-epoxy-17,18-seco-28-norlupa-17- hydroxy-20 (29) -ene-3-one is mediated by the VEGFR2 - AKT signaling pathway.

Novel process for the coproduction of xylo-oligosaccharides, fermentable sugars, and lignosulfonates from hardwood

Many biorefineries have not been commercialized due to poor economic returns from final products. In this work, a novel process has been developed to coproduce valuable sugars, xylo-oligosaccharides, and lignosulfonates from hardwood. The modified process includes a mild autohydrolysis pretreatment, which enables for the recovery of the xylo-oligosaccharides in auto-hydrolysate. Following enzymatic hydrolysis, the residue is sulfomethylated to produce lignosulfonates. Recycling the sulfomethylation residues increased both the glucan recovery and lignosulfonate production. The glucose recovery was increased from 81.7% to 87.9%. Steady state simulation using 100g of hardwood produced 46.7g sugars, 5.9g xylo-oligosaccharides, and 25.7g lignosulfonates, which were significantly higher than that produced from the no-recycling process with 39.1g sugars, 5.9g xylo-oligosaccharides, and 15.0g lignosulfonates. The results indicate that this novel biorefinery process can improve the production of fermentable sugars and lignosulfonate from hardwood as compared to a conventional biorefinery process.

[New study on species of Chinese medicine dragon's blood]

Through comprehensive study on the descriptions of dragon's blood in traditional medical books, we pointed out that before Tang Dynasty, Butea monosperma was used as dragon's blood; during Tang and Song Dynasty, Liquidambar formosana. was used as dragon's blood; in Commentaries on the illustrations of Song Dynasty, the author made a mistake by combined the descriptions of Butea monosperma with the descriptions of the prepared medicine of Dracaena cochinchinensis in dragon's blood, and thus the oversea species D. cochinchinensis became the mainstream of dragon's blood source in homeland. Until the foundation of the Republic of China, Daemonorops draco replaced D. cochinchinensis to the main source of dragon's blood.

Protective effect and antioxidant role of sweetgum (Liquidambar orientalis) oil against carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity and oxidative stress in rats

CONTEXT

Sweetgum oil (SO) obtained from the Liquidambar orientalis Mill (Hamamelidaceae) tree has been used in Turkish folk medicine for centuries as an antiulcerigenic. Some studies have reported the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of SO; however, its effect on hepatic and oxidative stress complications is still unexplored.

OBJECTIVE

This study investigates the hepatoprotective effect and the antioxidant role of SO against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) toxicity.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The experiment included control, CCl4, SO, and CCl4 + SO treatment groups. Control and SO group rats were fed a diet without CCl4. CCl4 and CCl4 + SO treatment groups received 0.5 mL/kg CCl4 diluted in olive oil (1:1 dilution) intraperitonally injection twice per week. The CCl4 + SO group also received 1000 mg/kg SO-supplemented feed for 50 d. Blood and tissue samples were used for the determination of hepatic damage serum biomarkers (HDSBs) levels, antioxidant defense system constituents (ADSCs), and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents. In addition, the liver was evaluated for histopathological changes.

RESULTS

According to the results, the HDSBs levels of the CCl4 group were significantly (p < 0.05) increased compared with the control, whereas the HDSB levels of the CCl4 + SO group resulted in marked decreases (p < 0.05) compared with the CCl4 group. In addition, the results showed that SO-supplemented diet restored the CCl4-induced MDA and ADS towards to control. Hepatoprotection of SO is further substantiated by the almost normal histologic findings in the CCl4 + SO group against degenerative changes in the CCl4 group.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

It was concluded that SO has a hepatoprotective effect and antioxidant capacity against CCl4 toxicity.

[Estimation for vegetation carbon storage in Tiantong National Forest Park]

Based on the field investigation and the data combination from literature, vegetation carbon storage, carbon density, and their spatial distribution were examined across six forest community types (Schima superba--Castanopsis fargesii community, S. superba--C. fargesii with C. sclerophylla community, S. superba--C. fargesii with Distylium myricoides community, Illicium lanceolatum--Choerospondias axillaris community, Liquidambar formosana--Pinus massoniana community and Hedyotis auricularia--Phylostachys pubescens community) in Tiantong National Forest Park, Zhejiang Province, by using the allometric biomass models for trees and shrubs. Results showed that: Among the six communities investigated, carbon storage and carbon density were highest in the S. superba--C. fargesii with C. sclerophylla community (storage: 12113.92 Mg C; density: 165.03 Mg C · hm(-2)), but lowest in the I. lanceolatum--C. axillaris community (storage: 680.95 Mg C; density: 101.26 Mg C · hm(-2)). Carbon storage was significantly higher in evergreen trees than in deciduous trees across six communities. Carbon density ranged from 76.08 to 144.95 Mg C · hm(-2), and from 0. 16 to 20. 62 Mg C · hm(-2) for evergreen trees and deciduous trees, respectively. Carbon storage was highest in stems among tree tissues in the tree layer throughout communities. Among vegetation types, evergreen broad-leaved forest had the highest carbon storage (23092.39 Mg C), accounting for 81.7% of the total carbon storage in all forest types, with a car- bon density of 126.17 Mg C · hm(-2). Total carbon storage for all vegetation types in Tiantong National Forest Park was 28254.22 Mg C, and the carbon density was 96.73 Mg C · hm(-2).

[Effects of stand structure regulation on soil labile organic carbon in Pinus elliottii plantation]

Taking 21-year-old Pinus elliottii pure plantation as the control, effects of enrichment planting with broadleaf trees (Liquidambar fornosana) after thinning the conifer trees (P. elliottii) on soil labile organic carbon of different plantations, including 3-year-old, 6-year-old, 9-year-old P. elliottii and 21-year-old P. elliottii-L. fornosana mixed plantations, were investigated. The results showed that the contents of soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC), readily oxidizable organic carbon (ROC), and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) significantly increased in the 6-year-old and 9-year-old plantations compared with those in the 21-year-old P. elliottii pure plantation. Soil labile organic carbon contents in the 21-year-old P. elliottii-L. fornosana mixed plantation increased significantly than those in 3-year-old, 6-year-old, 9-year-old stands, and the DOC, ROC and MBC contents increased by 113.1%, 53.3% and 54.6%, respectively, compared with those in the 21-year-old P. elliottii pure plantation. The results suggested that replanting with broadleaf trees are an effective measure to improve the soil ecological function in pure P. elliottii plantation.

Basics of compounding with balsams

Balsams have been used in pharmacy for centuries for many different purposes. Balsams include benzoin, Peruvian balsam, storax, and tolu balsam. Balsams are aromatic and usually oily resinous substances flowing from various plants and generally containing some amount of benzoic or cinnamic acid. Historically, they have been used orally and topically in various formulations. Today, their primary use is topically in solutions, ointments, creams, and lotions. Today, the most common use would be in diaper ointments and to treat various skin disorders. Pharmacists are still called upon to compound various preparations using balsams.

Evaporation of intercepted precipitation from fruit litter of Liquidambar styraciflua L. (sweetgum) in a clearing as a function of meteorological conditions

Interception of precipitation by fruit litter is a poorly understood component of the hydrologic cycle in forested ecosystems. Even less well understood is the effect of meteorological conditions on the evaporation of precipitation intercepted by forest litter. This study sought to examine the influence of meteorological conditions on the evaporation of intercepted precipitation by fruit litter from Liquidambar styraciflua L. (sweetgum) by deriving and calibrating a regression model to estimate evaporation from the fruit litter that may be of potential use to forest and watershed managers. Data on evaporative losses from the fruit litter used to derive and calibrate the statistical model were acquired through a larger field experiment conducted from mid November 2002 through April 2003. Results from the forward stepwise least squares multiple regression model demonstrated that evaporative losses from the fruit litter were estimated with a high degree of accuracy based on the amount of water stored, solar radiation inputs, and vapor pressure deficit (adjusted R(2)=0.836, F=82.28, P<0.00001). The amount of water stored in the fruit litter explained the highest proportion of variance in the regression model. Storm to storm comparisons also highlighted the importance of solar radiation and wind speed in determining evaporation from the fruit litter. The regression model potentially may be used in conjunction with a canopy interception model to predict interception losses from L. styraciflua dominated forests and plantations.

Regional assessment of ozone sensitive tree species using bioindicator plants

Tropospheric ozone occurs at phytotoxic levels in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Quantifying possible regional-scale impacts of ambient ozone on forest tree species is difficult and is confounded by other factors, such as moisture and light, which influence the uptake of ozone by plants. Biomonitoring provides an approach to document direct foliar injury irrespective of direct measure of ozone uptake. We used bioindicator and field plot data from the USDA Forest Service to identify tree species likely to exhibit regional-scale ozone impacts. Approximately 24% of sampled sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), 15% of sampled loblolly pine (Pinus taeda), and 12% of sampled black cherry (Prunus serotina) trees were in the highest risk category. Sweetgum and loblolly pine trees were at risk on the coastal plain of Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. Black cherry trees were at risk on the Allegheny Plateau (Pennsylvania), in the Allegheny Mountains (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland) as well as coastal plain areas of Maryland and Virginia. Our findings indicate a need for more in-depth study of actual impacts on growth and reproduction of these three species.
