Abstract
Eggplant is rich in anthocyanins, which are thought to be highly beneficial for human health. There is no study on weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) of anthocyanin biosynthesis in eggplant. Here, transcriptome data of 33 eggplant pericarp samples treated with light were used for WGCNA to identify significant modules. Total 13000 DEGs and 12 modules were identified, and the most significant module was associated with the secondary metabolites pathways. In addition, the hub gene SmWRKY44 with high connectivity was selected and its function was verified. The expression of SmWRKY44 showed a significant correlation with anthocyanin accumulation in the eggplant peels, leaves, and flowers. SmWRKY44-OE Arabidopsis significantly increased the accumulation of anthocyanins. Yeast two-hybrid and BiFC assays showed that SmWRKY44 could interact with SmMYB1, and it was also found that they could jointly promote the biosynthesis of anthocyanins in eggplant leaves through transient expression analysis. Our work provides a new direction for studying the molecular mechanism of light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in eggplant.

Abstract
Light is a key environmental factor affecting anthocyanin biosynthesis. Our previous study demonstrated that "Lanshan Hexian" is a light-sensitive eggplant cultivar, but its regulatory mechanism is unknown. Here, delphinidin-3-[4-(cis-p-coumaroyl)-rhamnosyl-glucopyranoside]-5-glucopyranoside and delphinidin-3-[4-(trans-p-coumaroyl)-rhamnosyl-glucopyranoside]-5-glucopyranoside were identified as the main anthocyanin components in Lanshan Hexian by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Three time points of anthocyanin accumulation, including the start point (0 day), fastest point (5 days), and highest point (12 day), were investigated by using ribonucleic acid sequencing and iTRAQ technology. The corresponding correlation coefficients of differentially expressed genes, and differentially expressed proteins were 0.6936, 0.2332, and 0.6672. Anthocyanin biosynthesis was a significantly enriched pathway, and CHI, F3H, 3GT, 5GT, and HY5 were regulated at both transcriptional and translational levels. Moreover, some transcription factors and photoreceptors may participate in light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis like the known transcription factors MYB113 and TT8. The transient expression assay indicated that SmMYB35, SmMYB44, and a SmMYB86 isoform might involve in the light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway. Finally, a regulatory model for light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in eggplant was constructed. Our work provides a new direction for the study of the molecular mechanisms of light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in eggplant.

Abstract
Eggplant is rich in anthocyanins, which are the major secondary metabolites and beneficial to human health. We discovered that the anthocyanin biosynthesis of eggplant cultivar 'Lanshan Hexian' was regulated by light. In this study, we isolated two blue light receptor genes, SmCRY1 and SmCRY2, and negative/positive anthocyanin regulatory factors SmCOP1 and SmHY5 from eggplant. In terms of transcript levels, SmCRY1, SmCRY2 and SmHY5 were up-regulated by light, while SmCOP1 was down-regulated. Subsequently, the four genes were functionally complemented in phenotype of corresponding mutants, indicating that they act as counterparts of Arabidopsis genes. Yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays showed that SmCRY1 and SmCRY2 interact with SmCOP1 in a blue-light-dependent manner. It also obtained the result that SmCOP1 interacts with SmHY5 and SmMYB1. Furthermore, using yeast one-hybrid assay, we found that SmHY5 and SmMYB1 both bind the promoters of anthocyanin biosynthesis structural genes (SmCHS and SmDFR). Taken together, blue-light-triggered CRY1/CRY2-COP1 interaction creates the condition that HY5 and MYB1 combine with the downstream anthocyanin synthesis genes (CHS and DFR) in eggplant. Our finding provides a new working model by which light controls anthocyanin accumulation in eggplant.

Abstract
The effects of red light, blue light, red+blue light and white light (control) generated by LED on the quality and antioxidation capacity of fruit and yield of ' Brita' eggplants were stu died. The results showed that under blue LED, the soluble protein, free amino acids contents o eggplant pulps and the anthocyanin content of eggplant peels were significantly higher by 15.1%, 27.2% and 73.6% than control respectively, but flavonoid and phenolic contents of pulps and the yield were significantly lower than those of the other treatments. Under red LED, the eggplant peels flavonoid was remarkably increased, but vitamin C (Vc) and soluble protein contents were consi derably decreased. Under red+blue LED, the soluble sugar of pulps and phenolic, red pigment yellow pigment contents, total antioxidation capacity (TAG) of peels and the yield were significantly higher than those of the other treatments, in which, the TAC of peels and the yield increased by 43.5% and 43.4% compared with control, respectively. Vc, flavonoid and phenolic contents and TAC of eggplant pulps were the highest under white LED. There was significant positive correlation between the phenol content of peels and Vc content of pulps with TAC. Under the protected cultivation condition, an appropriate amount of blue or red LED could improve the quality of eggplant fruit, and red+blue LED was more beneficial to promote the quality of eggplant peels and the yield.

Abstract
It has been theorized that photosynthetic radiation use efficiency (PhRUE) over the course of a day is constant for leaves throughout a canopy if leaf nitrogen content and photosynthetic properties are adapted to local light so that canopy photosynthesis over a day is optimized. To test this hypothesis, 'daily' photosynthesis of individual leaves of Solanum melongena plants was calculated from instantaneous rates of photosynthesis integrated over the daylight hours. Instantaneous photosynthesis was estimated from the photosynthetic responses to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and from the incident PAR measured on individual leaves during clear and overcast days. Plants were grown with either abundant or scarce N fertilization. Both net and gross daily photosynthesis of leaves were linearly related to daily incident PAR exposure of individual leaves, which implies constant PhRUE over a day throughout the canopy. The slope of these relationships (i.e. PhRUE) increased with N fertilization. When the relationship was calculated for hourly instead of daily periods, the regressions were curvilinear, implying that PhRUE changed with time of the day and incident radiation. Thus, linearity (i.e. constant PhRUE) was achieved only when data were integrated over the entire day. Using average PAR in place of instantaneous incident PAR increased the slope of the relationship between daily photosynthesis and incident PAR of individual leaves, and the regression became curvilinear. The slope of the relationship between daily gross photosynthesis and incident PAR of individual leaves increased for an overcast compared with a clear day, but the slope remained constant for net photosynthesis. This suggests that net PhRUE of all leaves (and thus of the whole canopy) may be constant when integrated over a day, not only when the incident PAR changes with depth in the canopy, but also when it varies on the same leaf owing to changes in daily incident PAR above the canopy. The slope of the relationship between daily net photosynthesis and incident PAR was also estimated from the photosynthetic light response curve of a leaf at the top of the canopy and from the incident PAR above the canopy, in place of that measured on individual leaves. The slope (i.e. net PhRUE) calculated in this simple way did not differ statistically from that calculated using data from individual leaves.
