Abstract
In this letter to editor I hypothesize that administering insulin or chrome along with fluoro-2 deoxy d-glucose (FDG) to enhance its uptake in malignant lesions that are known to have low levels of tumor glycolysis, and therefore, improve the sensitivity of PET imaging in this setting. The logic behind this idea stems from the known fact that there is substantial increase in uptake of d-glucose following administration of insülin/chrome in many tissues, and as such, the same pattern would apply to FDG.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study we aimed to evaluate the serum levels of Heat-shock protein (Hsp) 70 and acylated and desacylated ghrelin in patients suffering from a simple febrile convulsion. METHODS This cross-sectional study included patients who were diagnosed with a simple febrile convulsion, afebrile tonic-clonic epileptic seizure and upper respiratory tract infection when admitted to our hospital. All patients were aged between six months and 60 months. Patients enrolled in this study were divided into five groups. Group I: patients with a simple febrile convulsion and body temperature of 38º C to 39° C; group II: patients with a simple febrile convulsion and body temperature of 39.1° C to 41° C; group III: patients with primary generalised tonic-clonic seizure and normal body temperature; group IV: patients with upper respiratory infection without convulsion and a body temperature of 38° C to 39° C; and group V: patients with upper respiratory infection without convulsion and a body temperature of 39.1° C to 41° C. The control group included healthy children who were followed up in the healthy children polyclinic. Serum levels of Hsp70 and acylated and des-acylated ghrelin were studied from the blood samples collected from the patients and control group. RESULTS Serum levels of Hsp70 were higher in the febrile convulsion (groups I, II) and epileptic convulsion and infection (groups IV, V) groups than in the controls (P<0.0001). Moreover, serum levels of acylated and desacylated ghrelin were higher in the simple febrile convulsion (groups I and II) and epileptic convulsion and infection (groups IV and V) groups than in the control (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS We demonstrated that serum levels of Hsp70 and acylated and desacylated ghrelin increased in patients with a simple febrile convulsion.

Abstract
Purpose As the normal colon epithelium differentiates into adenoma, invasive cancer and metastatic cancer, the cell acquires new characteristics such as apoptosis, proliferation, differentiation, invasion and metastasis. Many mechanisms are effective in acquiring these qualities. One of these is the regulation of the functioning of ion channels. This study aimed to examine TRPA1 and TRPC1 expression in colorectal adenocarcinomas showing different degrees of differentiation. Patients and Methods We examined the biopsy specimens of 60 patients diagnosed with colorectal adenocarcinomas, including those of patients with well-differentiated (n = 20), moderately differentiated (n = 20) and poorly differentiated (n = 20) carcinomas. Moreover, 20 biopsy specimens of individuals with normal colonic mucosa were examined. Histoscores were calculated for TRPA1 and TRPC1 based on the extent of diffusion and intensity of immunoreactivity, and these scores were compared statistically. Results A statistically significant increase in both TRPA1 and TRPC1 immunoreactivity was observed in low-grade and high-grade colon adenocarcinomas compared to the control group (p<0.001). A statistically significant decrease in both TRPA1 and TRPC1 immunoreactivity was observed in high-grade colon adenocarcinomas compared to low-grade colon adenocarcinomas (p<0.001). Conclusion TRPA1 and TRPC1 immunoreactivites are increased in colorectal adenocarcinoma tissue compared with the healthy tissue. Furthermore, the immunoreactivity decreases as the grade of cancer increases.

Abstract
Dermcidin, salusin-α, and salusin-β are three recently discovered molecules that confer antimicrobial properties. The present study aims to investigate the association between dermcidin, salusin-α, and salusin-β in the etiopathology of patients with diabetic foot infection. The study included three groups: Group 1 - diabetic foot infection; Group 2 - diabetes without history of diabetic foot; and Group 3 - the control group. Plasma dermcidin, salusin-α, and salusin-β levels were compared across the groups. Median (Q1-Q3) values of plasma dermcidin levels in Groups 1, 2, and 3 were 3.45 (0.8-4.4), 5.2 (3.7-6.4), and 5.8 (3.1-10) ng/mL, respectively. Diabetic foot infection group had significantly lower plasma dermcidin levels compared to diabetes only group and control group (P = .000, ANOVA), whereas there was no statistically significant difference between the Group 2 and Group 3 (P = .163, ANOVA). Salusin-α and salusin-β levels were significantly higher in the Group 3 compared to the other groups. Based on our findings, diabetic foot infection group had significantly lower plasma dermcidin levels and salusin-α and salusin-β levels were significantly higher in the control group. These molecules (dermcidin specifically) can be researched as an adjuvant therapeutic agent in addition to conventional treatments in diabetic foot diabetic foot infections. Also, it can be searched this may prevent many complications including amputation.

Abstract
Abstract
Objectives
This study was aimed to investigate the diagnostic values of serum levels of asprosin and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and to assess the role of these biomarkers on the development and progression of the condition.
Methods
This study was carried out from April 2020 to February 2021 in the department of ophthalmology of a tertiary hospital in Turkey. Thirty patients diagnosed with ROP and 30 healthy newborns were included the study. Serum NGAL and asprosin levels were determined via ELISA.
Results
The median serum NGAL levels were found to be similar between the ROP group and the control group (p=0.595). Median asprosin levels were significantly higher in patients diagnosed with ROP [46.58 (12.70–142.28) ng/mL] compared to healthy subjects [13.05 (10.92–17.73) ng/mL] (p=0.001). The optimal cut-off value of asprosin by ROC analysis was 30 ng/mL (AUC: 0.754, p=0.001) for diagnosing ROP. Serum asprosin levels were positively correlated with serum ALP levels and inversely correlated with gestational week, uric acid and AST values (all, p<0.005).
Conclusions
Our results demonstrated that asprosin, but not NGAL, could be a biomarker for the diagnosis of ROP.

Abstract
AIM: To evaluate plasma and aqueous levels of adiponutrin and pannexin 1 in patients with and without diabetic retinopathy.
METHODS: The study included three age and gender-matched groups of 20 cataract patients with no diabetes or additional disease (Group C), 20 cataract patients with diabetes and no retinopathy (Group DM+C), and 20 cataract patients with diabetic retinopathy (Group DR+C). All the patients were examined with respect to body mass index (BMI), fasting plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and lipid profile. Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (Phaco+IOL) implantation were performed to all patients in all the groups, and aqueous samples were taken during the operation. The plasma and aqueous adiponutrin and pannexin 1 levels were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.
RESULTS: A statistically significant difference was determined between the groups with respect to BMI, fasting plasma glucose, and HbA1c levels (P<0.05 for all parameters tested). The plasma adiponutrin levels of Group DR+C were statistically significantly lower than those of Group C and Group DM+C (P<0.001, P=0.004). No statistically significant difference was determined in the aqueous adiponutrin levels in three groups. The plasma pannexin 1 levels of Groups DM+C and DR+C were statistically significantly lower than those of Group C (both P=0.001). The aqueous pannexin 1 levels of Group DR+C were statistically significantly higher than those of Group C and Group DM+C (P=0.001, P<0.001).
CONCLUSION: Adiponutrin and pannexin 1, which play an important role in the pathophysiology of diabetes and obesity, and have a regulatory role in hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. The measurement of adiponutrin and pannexin 1 levels may support clinicians in determining the risk of DR development.

Abstract
For analyzing the changes in immunoglobulins, HSP70, ghrelin levels in blood samples were collected from volunteers vaccinated against swine flu before the vaccinations and on days 3, and 15, and 1 and 2 months after the vaccination in the presence or absence of fever associated with the it. The study included 11 subjects having developed a fever, and 13 subjects not having a fever, and 20 control subjects. Immunoglobulins were measured by nephelometry, and HSP70 and ghrelins by appropriate ELISA tests. The level of ghrelin was reduced, while the level of HSP70 was significantly increased in subjects who developed fevers. When temperatures were normalized, both levels were found similar to the control group. These results indicate that the increase in serum immunoglobulins levels associated with vaccinations, along with, elevations in HSP70 and reduced ghrelin levels associated with fever, may be the important parameters in the clinical evaluation and follow-up of treatments with vaccines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Oxygen is essential for living organisms that perform aerobic respiration since cells begin to die when humans and animals are deprived of oxygen. Oxygen saturation decreases and shortness of breath occurs in coronavirus (COVID-19) disease. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine the changes in hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), subfatin, asprosin, irisin, C-reactive protein (C-RP), Maresin-1 (MaR-1), and diamine oxidase (DAO) molecules in diabetic patients with coronavirus according to their oxygen saturations. PATIENTS AND METHODS Participants were classified into 4 Groups of 22, including patients with oxygen saturation between 95% and 100% (Group I, control), between 80% and 85% (Group II), between 75% and 79% (Group III), and between 70% and 74% (Group IV). COVID-19 was diagnosed with PCR testing and 5 mL of blood was taken following the diagnosis. HIF-1α, subfatin, asprosin, irisin, MaR-1, and DAO values of the participants were measured with ELISA. Other parameters used in the study were obtained from the records of the patients. RESULTS When Group I was compared to Groups II, there was no significant change in Group II while HIF-1α, subfatin, asprosin, irisin, C-RP, and DAO counts had increased significantly in Groups III and IV. When the MaR-1 values were examined, they were reported to have decreased significantly in Groups III and IV (p < 0.05). Similarly, when Group II and Group IV were compared, HIF-1α, subfatin, asprosin, irisin, C-RP, and DAO values of the participants in Group IV had significantly increased while MaR-1 values had significantly decreased (p < 0.05). In the case of oxygen saturation decreasing below the critical value (70-74%) in patients with coronavirus, the release of HIF-1HIF-1α, subfatin, asprosin, irisin, C-RP, and DAO increased while the MaR-1 values decreased (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Changes in these molecules in patients with coronavirus and diabetes according to their oxygen saturation suggested that they functioned as the "metabolic oxygen sensors" of the metabolism. Therefore, according to these data, it was predicted that these molecules had the potential to be used in the diagnosis and follow-up of diseases related to oxygen (such as asthma, and critical intensive care patients) in clinics in the future.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a primary disease of the carbohydrate metabolism that is characterised by absolute or relative insulin deficiency, or insulin resistance. Although life expectancy is low for diabetic patients, the prognosis has been improved in recent decades. Metformin is an oral antidiabetic that reduces insulin resistance and plasma glucose levels by decreasing glucose production in the liver. It can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with other antidiabetic medications or insulin. Urotensin 2 (U-II), which is one of the most effective known vasoconstrictor peptides, was observed to act as a vasoconstrictor in diseases such as hypertension and heart failure, and to induce vasodilation in healthy volunteers. Some studies have proposed that the activation of the U-II system could lead to metabolic syndrome. Certain studies have determined a link between DM and U-II. However, there exist no studies on the effects of U-II in recently diagnosed type 2 DM patients after metformin treatment. This study aims to investigate the plasma and saliva levels of U-II at diagnosis and after a three-month metformin treatment in recently diagnosed type 2 DM patients, and to compare these levels to those of healthy volunteers. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our study compared 30 recently diagnosed type 2 DM patients to their states after three-month metformin treatment and 30 healthy volunteers. RESULTS When compared with the control group, there was no significant increase in the plasma and saliva U-II levels of recently diagnosed type 2 DM patients. We determined a statistically significant increase in the plasma and saliva ureotensin-2 levels of recently diagnosed type 2 DM patients after a three-month metformin treatment (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that the patients with type 2 DM have a multifactorial aetiopathogenesis and an increase in U-II levels after metformin treatment. Metformin has no known effect on the U-II metabolism; therefore, the findings need confirmation through more clinical and experimental studies with more participants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The melanocortin system is an important neural system underlying the control of body weight and food intake. This system has recently received great attention as a potential target for obesity treatment. Therefore, the objective of this study was to find out the leptin-melanocortin pathway before and after Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) in obese patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study was carried out with a total of 144 individuals in 3 groups [control, obese group before LSG and obese group after LSG (who underwent LSG one year ago)]. The amount of leptin (LEP), leptin receptor (LEPR), tropomyosin receptor kinase receptor B (TrkB), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) and melanocortin-4 receptors (MC4R) molecules were measured by using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays. RESULTS A statistically significant difference was found between the groups in terms of body mass index (BMI) values (p = 0.001). There was also statistically significant difference present between obese before LSG group and obese after LSG group regarding the levels of LEP, TrkB, BDNF and proteins (p < 0.05). A decline was determined in the LEP and BDNF levels one year follow-up after LSG. CONCLUSIONS The evidence suggests that the leptin melanocortin pathway strictly regulates food intake and BMI before and after LSG surgery. This pathway should be kept under control for effectively reducing food intake and body weight in the treatment of obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diabetes is an important endocrinological disease that has an increasing incidence in the world and affects all biological tissues including testicles. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal the histological and biochemical effects of vitamin D on irisin, apoptosis, total antioxidant status (TAS), and total oxidant status (TOS) in testicular tissues of rats with experimental diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS 41 male Wistar rats, 8-10 weeks old, weighing between 200-220 g, were included in the study as the following groups: control group (n=7; no treatment), sham group [only sodium citrate buffer (SCB)] [n=7; single dose 0.1 Molar (M) SCB given intraperitoneally (i.p)], vitamin D group (n=7; 50 IU/day given orally), diabetes group [n=10; single dose 50 mg/kg Streptozotocin (STZ) dissolved in 0.1 M SCB and given i.p (tail vein blood glucose level above 250 mg/dl after 72 hours)] and diabetes+vitamin D group [n=10, single dose 50 mg/kg STZ, dissolved in 0.1 M SCB and given i.p (tail vein blood glucose level above 250 mg/dl after 72 hours) and when diabetes occurs, oral vitamin D administration of 50 IU/day)]. At the end of the 8 weeks experiment, blood was drawn from the tail vein of all rats, they were sacrificed and testicular tissues were taken. While the amount of irisin in the blood and testicular tissue supernatants was analyzed with the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method, TAS and TOS measurements were analyzed with the REL method, testicular tissues were analyzed histopathologically, immunohistochemically, and with the TUNEL method. RESULTS When the diabetes group was compared with the control and sham groups, it was reported that the amounts of blood and tissue supernatant irisin and TAS significantly decreased and the TOS was significantly increased; a statistically significant increase in irisin and TAS of blood and tissue supernatants and a significant decrease in TOS were detected when diabetes+vitamin D and diabetes groups were compared among themselves. Similar results were obtained in the immunohistochemical studies. Tissue expressions of irisin decreased in the diabetes group compared to the control and sham groups, while the application of vitamin D increased the tissue expressions of irisin. Additionally, when the numbers of apoptotic cells were compared, it was reported that apoptotic cells in the diabetes group increased significantly compared to the control and sham groups, and vitamin D administration significantly decreased the number of apoptotic cells. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, vitamin D administration to diabetic rats decreased the number of apoptotic cells and increased the amount of irisin. Vitamin D had an effective role in maintaining the physiological integrity of rat testicular tissues, so vitamin D may be a potent agent to be used in the treatment of diabetes in the future.

Abstract
Toxic doses of formaldehyde (FA) can cause oxidative damage and impair energy metabolism. Asprosin (ASP) and subfatin (SUB) are adipokines produced by adipose tissue that help regulate energy metabolism. We investigated the effects of carvacrol (CAR), an antioxidant with hepatoprotective properties, on ASP and SUB in rats exposed to FA using immunohistochemistry and biochemistry. We used 42 male Wistar albino rats divided into six groups of seven: group 1, untreated control; group 2, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week); group 3, CAR-20 (20 mg/kg); group 4, CAR-40; group 5, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week) + CAR-20 (20 mg/kg); group 6, FA (10 ppm FA by inhalation 8 h/day, 5 days/week) + CAR-40 (40 mg/kg). Levels of ASP and SUB, and total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) in blood and liver tissue were measured using ELISA. ASP and SUB immunoreactivity was assessed using immunohistochemistry. The number of apoptotic cells was determined using the TUNEL method. The number of apoptotic cells in group 2 was increased compared to group 1. TOS in group 2 was increased compared to group 1. The numbers of apoptotic cells and TOS in group 3 were decreased compared to group 1. TOS was decreased in group 6 compared to group 2, but TOS was increased compared to group 1. We found ASP and SUB immunoreactivity in the liver. All alterations were reversed by addition of CAR. It appears that FA disrupts energy metabolism and CAR ameliorates the destructive effects of FA when used at appropriate doses, although CAR might be harmful at high doses.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship between serum calprotectin levels and facial paralysis in patients with Bell's palsy and to determine its prognostic significance. Materials and Methods: This study included 40 patients diagnosed with Bell's palsy and 20 healthy individuals as controls. The patients were categorized into three groups based on their response to treatment: complete response, partial response, and no response. Blood samples were taken before treatment and in the third month after treatment to measure C-reactive protein, white blood cell count, lymphocyte count, neutrophil count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and calprotectin levels. Results: Serum calprotectin levels were found to be elevated in patients with BP compared to the healthy controls; however, no significant correlation was observed between calprotectin levels and disease prognosis. Conclusions: The findings suggest that Bell's palsy patients have elevated serum calprotectin levels compared to healthy individuals, indicating the potential use of calprotectin as a biomarker in Bell's palsy. However, no significant difference in calprotectin levels was observed between patients with varying degrees of treatment response, suggesting that calprotectin may be limited in predicting disease prognosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obesity is a serious public health problem associated with excessive food intake. Regulation of food intake in highly organized organisms is under the control of a large number of orexigenic and anorexigenic molecules. Therefore, the main purpose of this study has been to determine the relationship between obesity and some of the circulating orexigenic and anorexigenic peptides that have a role in appetite control and to determine whether the concentrations of these molecules differ according to blood groups. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study included 400 individuals of whom 100 were obese women, 100 obese men, 100 healthy men and 100 healthy women. Obese women and men were divided into 4 groups, according to their blood groups. In the control group, healthy women and healthy men were similarly divided into 4 blood groups. Each blood group within the groups, therefore, had 25 participants. RESULTS When leptin, nesfatin-1, obestatin and neuropeptide-Y, ghrelin and galanin levels of the control group and obese participants were compared, regardless of blood groups, leptin, nesfatin-1, obestatin and neuropeptide-Y were significantly higher, whereas only the ghrelin levels were significantly lower in obese patients. When the amounts of these hormones were measured according to gender, the situation was similar. When leptin, nesfatin-1, obestatin and neuropeptide-Y values of the control and obese participants' blood groups were compared with each other; these hormones were high in all blood groups; however, leptin levels in A blood group, nesfatin-1 levels in AB and O blood group, obestatin levels in AB blood group, neuropeptide-Y levels in A, B, AB blood groups were significantly higher. When the ghrelin levels of the blood groups in the control group and obese participants were compared, it was only significantly lower in the AB blood group. The ghrelin levels in the other blood groups of the obese individuals were again low, but not significantly so. When the distribution of hormones according to gender was evaluated, a situation parallel to the above results was recorded. CONCLUSIONS Leptin, nesfatin-1, obestatin and neuropeptide-Y and galanin levels of obese individuals were significantly higher than the control values, whereas the ghrelin values were significantly lower regardless of blood groups. Also, these hormones in blood partly varied with ABO blood groups. These different concentrations of hormones in ABO blood groups might be related with stimulation or suppression of appetite in human. However, further studies in other ethnic groups are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, we sought to investigate the effects of energy drink supplementation and treadmill exercise on the levels of free radicals, antioxidants, Angtpl8, Elabela, and lipid metabolism in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 28 male Wistar albino rats (4 weeks old, 101.96 ± 9.75 g) were included in the study. The rats were randomly divided into four equal groups: control, exercise, supplement, and exercise+supplement groups. At the end of the study, the rats were decapitated, and blood samples were tested for levels of Angptl-8, ghrelin, leptin, irisin, SOD, CAT, TBARS, total oxidant status, and total antioxidant status using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Levels of blood lipids including triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, and LDL-C were studied using spectrophotometric method in an auto analyzer. RESULTS Statistical analysis showed statistical significance in TBARS, LDL-C, irisin, Angptl-8, and Elabela levels of the exercise group; SOD and HDL-C levels of the supplement+exercise group; and total cholesterol levels in the supplement group (p < 0.05). Although there were differences between the groups in leptin, ghrelin, and CAT levels, they were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS As a result, it can be argued that treadmill exercise is important in regulating lipid metabolism and stimulating peptide hormones and receptors. Furthermore, consuming energy drinks without performing exercise or physical activity increases fat stores, and such increases in the critical organs and tissues may pose a threat to the body.

Abstract
Acromegaly can lead to structural alterations of joints and bones. Patients with acromegaly may, therefore, have musculoskeletal complaints. In this study, sacroiliac joints are investigated in patients with acromegaly. 33 patients with acromegaly were enrolled. Sacroiliac joints were examined by X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In acromegaly, sacroiliac joints were abnormal in 36% of the patients by X-ray and 12.1% by MRI. When current axial spondylarthritis (SpA) classification criteria were taken into account, 6.1% of acromegaly patients could be classified as non-radiographic axial SpA and 2% as radiographic axial SpA. Sacroiliac joints are frequently affected in acromegaly and thus this disorder mimics the features of AS and SpA. Acromegaly should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of AS and SpA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brucella spp. are facultative intracellular pathogens that can cause chronic infections in many tissues and organs. OBJECTIVES To investigate serum dermcidin, salusin-alpha, salusin-beta and TNF-alpha levels and their correlation with each other in patients with acute brucellosis. METHODS From 50 patients hospitalized upon diagnosis of acute brucellosis, blood samples were collected and dermcidin, salusin-alpha, salusin-beta and TNF-alpha levels in serum samples were measured using an ELISA assay. The control group included 40 volunteers. RESULTS Brucellosis group had significantly lower plasma dermcidin, salusin- alpha, salusin-beta levels compared to the healthy control group (respectively p=0.008, p<0.001, p<0.001). Moreover, Brucellosis group had significantly higher plasma TNF-alpha levels comparisons with the controls (p=0.002). In the examination of the correlation between TNF-alpha and dermcidin, salusin-alpha and salusin-beta in the brucellosis group, only a negative correlation was found between salusin-beta and TNF-alpha. In the control group, there was a positive and statistically significant correlation between salusin-beta and TNF-alpha. CONCLUSION Dermcidin, salusin-alpha, and particularly salusin-beta levels are important in Brucella pathogenesis. The paradoxical correlation between TNF-alpha and salusin-beta in patients with brucellosis and control group is remarkable. However, there is a need for extensive studies conducted with more patients to further elucidate this topic.
