Abstract
Although many pregnant women have been infected by coronavirus, the presence of intrauterine vertical transmission has not been conclusively reported yet. What prevents this highly contagious virus from reaching the fetus? Is it only the presence of a strong placental barrier, or is it the natural absence of the some receptor that the viruses use for transmission? We, therefore, need to comprehensively understand the mechanism of action of the mammalian epithelial barriers located in two different organs with functional similarity. The barriers selected as potential targets by SARS-CoV-2 are the alveolo-capillary barrier (ACB), and the syncytio-capillary barrier (SCB). Caveolae are omega-shaped structures located on the cell membrane. They consist of caveolin-1 protein (Cav-1) and are involved in the internalisation of some viruses. By activating leukocytes and nuclear factor-κB, Cav-1 initiates inflammatory reactions. The presence of more than one Cav-1 binding sites on coronavirus is an important finding supporting the possible relationship between SARS-CoV-2-mediated lung injury. While the ACB cells express Cav-1 there is no caveolin expression in syncytiotrophoblasts. In this short review, we will try to explain our hypothesis that the lack of caveolin expression in the SCB is one of the most important physiological mechanisms that prevents vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Since the physiological Cav-1 deficiency appears to prevent acute cell damage treatment algorithms could potentially be developed to block this pathway in the non-pregnant population affected by SARS-CoV-2. Syncytiotrophoblasts do not express caveolin. SARS-CoV-2 does not bind to syncytiotrophoblasts. Placental barrier does not allow passage of SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Biological fluids (milk and serum/plasma) and cheese whey milk-derived fluid contain numerous molecules, especially amino acids and proteins. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find out whether cheese whey (n:6), cow milk (n:6) and its blood (n=6) have adropin, nesfatin-1, apelin-12, ghrelins and salusin peptides. Adropin, nesfatin-1, apelin-12 concentrations were measured by ELISA, whereas ghrelin and salusin concentrations were measured by EIA methods. It was found that adropin, nesfatin-1, apelin-12, des-acylated ghrelin and salusins in cheese whey were higher than in the corresponding milk peptides and plasma of dairy cows, with the exception of salusin alpha and acylated ghrelin in milk being the same than that of the corresponding cheese whey concentration and plasma of dairy cows. A correlation was also found between milk peptides and cheese whey, as also with plasma of dairy cows. The data suggest that peptides in cow milk might be an important and nutritious food for (neonatal) calves and human diet due to their biological and physiological properties.

Abstract
Pathological pregnancies, such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia, intrauterine growth retardation and macrosomic fetuses, are among the most fundamental problems of obstetrics clinics that are risk factors for both mother and child. Our main goal here is to compare maternal blood and newborn venous-arterial cord blood asprosin levels in pathological and healthy pregnancies. The study included 30 pregnant women with gestational diabetes, 30 with preeclampsia, 30 with severe preeclampsia, 30 with intrauterine growth retardation, 29 with macrosomic fetuses and 30 healthy pregnant women. All mothers were voluntary participants. Arteries and venous blood samples from both mothers and newborns were taken, in which asprosin levels were measured by ELISA. There was a statistically significant increase in asprosin levels in pregnant women with gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia and macrosemic fetuses compared with the control group, whereas in those with intrauterine growth retardation a significant decrease was observed. Venous and arterial cord blood asprosin levels were also close to maternal asprosin levels. Regarding the asprosin levels in venous and arterial cord blood in all newborns, the former was higher, but was not statistically significant.

Abstract
Preeclampsia, a common complication of pregnancy, is associated with alteration in the concentration of leptin in maternal blood. The action of leptin is antagonistic to that of ghrelin. Here, we compared the levels of leptin and ghrelin in maternal serum and in arterial and venous cord blood between healthy pregnant women and those suffering from mild and severe preeclampsia. The levels of leptin in maternal and newborn's blood were elevated in both mild and severe preeclamptic patients (p < 0.05). Moreover, serum ghrelin levels were negatively correlated with blood pressure and leptin/ghrelin ratio was decreased in preeclampsia (p < 0.05). We concluded that increased production of ghrelin may represent a compensatory hypotensive mechanism in preeclamptic women.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to ascertain whether human milk contains preptin, salusin-alpha (salusin-α) and -beta (salusin-β) and pro-hepcidin and hepcidin-25, and whether there are relationships between plasma and milk preptin, salusin-α and -β and pro-hepcidin and hepcidin-25 concentrations in lactating mothers with and without gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Blood was obtained from non-lactating women (n = 12), non-diabetic lactating women (n = 12), and GDM lactating women (n = 12). Colostrum, transitional milk, and mature milk samples were collected just before suckling from healthy and GDM lactating women. Peptides concentrations were determined by ELISA and EIA. Mammary gland tissues were screened immunohistochemically for these peptides. Women with GDM had significantly higher plasma and colostum preptin concentrations than healthy lactating women during the colostral and transitional milk period. Salusin-alpha and -beta levels in milk and plasma were lower in women with GDM. Salusin-α and -β were significantly lower in both plasma and colostrums of GDM than of healthy lactating women. Women with GDM had significantly higher colostum prohepcidin and hepcidin-25 concentrations than healthy lactating women during the colostral period. Plasma prohepcidin was also higher in women with GDM than in healthy lactating women during the colostral period, but plasma prohepcidin and hepcidin-25 levels decreased during mature milk period. Transitional milk pro-hepcidin and hepcidin-25 levels in women with GDM were higher than in healthy lactating women. All these results revealed that the mammary gland produces those peptides, which were present in milk at levels correlating with plasma concentrations.

Abstract
Subfatin and spexin are two novel adipokines implicated in glucose homeostasis. This study was designed to investigate changes in blood subfatin and spexin levels during gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and childbirth, and define the mechanisms of these hormones in the physiopathology of GDM. A total of 60 pregnant women, comprising 30 diagnosed with GDM and 30 with normal gestation, were included in the study. The diagnosis of GDM was made through a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) administered between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. The amounts of subfatin, spexin, and insulin were measured in blood samples by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays; lipid profiles, glucose, and other biochemical parameters were measured by using an autoanalyzer. Levels of subfatin and spexin were significantly higher in blood samples drawn at baseline (before OGTT) in mothers with GDM compared to those with normal gestation. Similar observations were made in maternal and cord blood sampled at the end of pregnancy. However, at delivery, the increase in subfatin and spexin concentrations observed at baseline was abrogated in both groups of pregnant women, although levels in mothers with GDM were comparatively higher. These results show that levels of subfatin and spexin increased because of GDM and suggest that these hormones could be potential biomarkers for the diagnosis and management of GDM.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present study was to compare maternal serum and cord blood irisin levels in females whose pregnancies were or were not complicated by idiopathic foetal growth restriction. METHODS A total of 30 subjects participated. The study group consisted of 15 female patients who were referred to our perinatology clinic for delivery because of foetal growth restriction developing in the third trimester. Fifteen females with uncomplicated singleton pregnancies constituted the control group. Irisin levels were assessed in maternal serum, as well as in serum from the umbilical vein and artery. RESULTS The demographic features of the two groups were similar (p > 0.05). Gestational age at delivery and birth weight were higher in females with uncomplicated pregnancies (p = 0.001). Umbilical artery irisin levels were significantly lower in pregnancies complicated by foetal growth restriction compared to controls (p = 0.003). Umbilical artery irisin levels were positively correlated with foetal weight (p = 0.01) and foetal abdominal circumference (measured by ultrasonography) (p = 0.01). Maternal and umbilical vein irisin levels did not differ between the two groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The data suggest that umbilical artery irisin levels were lower in pregnancies complicated by foetal growth restriction. Such lower irisin levels may contribute to the pathogenesis of this common condition, and metabolic syndrome may be a long-term consequence of idiopathic FGR.

Abstract
A 112-amino-acid protein irisin (IRI) is widely expressed in many organs, but we currently do not know whether appendix tissue and blood cells express it. If appendix tissue and neutrophil cells express IRI, measuring its concentration in biological fluids might be helpful in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA), since neutrophil cells are the currently gold-standard laboratory parameters for the diagnosis of AA. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the suitability of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay-based measurements of the proposed myokine IRI for the discrimination of patients with AA from those with acute abdominal pain (AP) and healthy controls. Moreover, immunoreactivity to IRI was investigated in appendix tissues and blood cells. Samples were collected on admission (T1), 24 hours (T2), and 72 hours (T3) postoperatively from patients with suspected AA and from patients with AP corresponding to T1-T3, whereas control subject blood was once corresponding to T1. IRI was measured in serum, saliva, and urine by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, whereas in appendix tissue and blood cells, IRI was detected by immunohistohcemistry. Appendix tissue and blood cells (except for erythrocytes) are new sources of IRI. Basal saliva, urine, and serum levels were higher in children with AA compared with postoperative levels (T2) that start to decline after surgery. This is in line with the finding that IRI levels are higher in children with AA when compared with those with AP or control subject levels, most likely due to a large infiltration of neutrophil cells in AA that release its IRI into body fluids. Measurement of IRI in children with AA parallels the increase or decrease in the neutrophil count. This new finding shows that the measurement of IRI and neutrophil count can together improve the diagnosis of AA, and it can distinguish it from AP. IRI can be a candidate marker for the diagnosis of AA and offers an additional parameter to neutrophil count. The promising receiving operating curve results indicate the following sensitivities and specificities, respectively, for IRI: serum 90% and 55%, saliva 90% and 60%, and urine 90% and 50%. Serum neutrophil count gave a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 90%. This promising result now needs to be confirmed in a larger group of patients.

Abstract
Nesfatin-1, discovered by Oh-I and his coworkers in 2006, is a multi-functional peptide hormone with an approximate MW of 9.8 kDa and a half-life of 23.5 minutes. This peptide is found in three different forms, nesfatin-1, nesfatin-2 and nesfatin-3, all three of which are formed from the precursor NUCB2 by proteolytic processing. The 30-amino acid middle segment of nesfatin-1 (M30) is responsible for limiting food intake, while the exact physiological role of nesfatin-2 and nesfatin-3 is unknown. This review will focus on nesfatin-1 in relation with tissue and fluid distribution, considerations for its analysis in body fluids, and its potential as a biomarker for some diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In this study, we aimed to determine the serum, urine, and saliva levels of acyl ghrelin, des-acyl ghrelin, and obestatin in the newly diagnosed idiopathic generalized pediatric epilepsy patients in the pretreatment period and in the third month of valproic acid. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty pre- and post-treatment cases of patients who were diagnosed with idiopathic generalized epilepsy and 30 control patients were included in this study. Serum, saliva, and urine levels of ghrelin were measured in epileptic group and in the control group in the pretreatment period and in the third month of the treatment. RESULTS There were 14 females and 16 males. Mean age was 8.9 ± 2.5 years. Mean body mass index was 17.2 ± 2.3 in the patients and 16.6 ± 2.0 in the control group, whereas it was 16.8 ± 2.1 in the third month of the therapy (P > 0.05). Pretherapy serum, urine, and saliva levels of acyl ghrelin were 36.45 ± 9.93, 31.78 ± 12.87, and 34.23 ± 11.49 pg/mL, respectively in the patient group. Post-treatment serum, urine, and saliva levels of acyl ghrelin were 51.34 ± 12.01, 48.24 ± 16.76, and 44.90 ± 14.99 pg/mL in the patient group. Pretherapy serum, urine, and saliva levels of des-acyl ghrelin were 419.62 ± 75.63, 370.59 ± 60.11, and 396.28 ± 60.76 pg/mL, respectively in the patient group. Post-therapy serum, urine, and saliva levels of des-acyl ghrelin were 458.61 ± 87.10, 429.92 ± 55.81, and 449.48 ± 74.32 pg/mL, respectively in the patient group. Pretherapy serum, urine, and saliva levels of obestatin were 23.02 ± 3.15, 14.27 ± 4.22, and 29.52 ± 5.39 ng/mL, respectively. Post-therapy serum, urine, and saliva levels of obestatin were 24.30 ± 4.18, 15.27 ± 6.43, and 30.94 ± 7.42 ng/mL, respectively. CONCLUSION There was a significant increase in the serum, urine, and saliva levels of acyl ghrelin and des-acyl ghrelin without an increase in post-therapy body mass index in idiopathic generalized epilepsy patients.

Abstract
Ghrelin belongs to the family of a gut-brain hormone that promotes food intake and controls energy balance. Recently, it has also been shown to regulate bone formation directly. Dental tissue shares several functional, developmental and anatomical similarities with bone, and in the present study we have investigated the presence of ghrelin in 44 human teeth using immunocytochemistry and radioimmunoassay. Both methods showed that the hormone is present in canines and molars, mainly in the odontoblasts but also in the pulp. Ghrelin could potentially play interesting physiological roles in teeth.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of CPB on salusin-α, salusin-β and apelin-36 bioactive peptides in people who are planned to undergo coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) operation due to coronary artery disease and to explore whether these peptides are produced in human aortic, saphenous and arterial tissues. The study included age and BMI matched 15 patients who underwent CABG operation by CPB. In order to determine salusin-α, salusin-β and apelin-36 levels, venous blood samples were collected before induction of anesthesia (T1), before CPB (T2), 5 min before the removal of cross-clamp (T3), 5 min after the removal of cross-clamp (T4), upon arrival in the intensive care (T5), at postoperative 24th hour (T6) and 72nd hour (T7). Salusin and apelin expressions of the tissues were shown by immunohistochemical method. Peptide amounts of sera and tissues were measured using ELISA. Salusins production by vessels occurs in fibroblast cells of the media in the aorta and smooth muscle cells of the media in the LIMA and saphena. Apelin is produced by endothelial cells of the intima and fibroblast cells of the media in the aorta and by smooth muscle cells of the media in the LIMA and saphena. Changes in the levels of salusin-β and apelin-36 were significant during CPB. Salusin-α, salusin-β and apelin-36 are locally synthesized in the arteries and veins. Salusins and apelin-36 might be important markers in the CPB, and also that salusin-β was more specific in comparison to salusin-α.

Abstract
Asprosin and subfatin are recently discovered two new hormones of adipocyte origin that play a role in the regulation of glucose metabolism. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a gynaecological syndrome presenting with energy turbulence. The aim of this study was to investigate whether asprosin and subfatin play a role in PCOS disease. Thirty participants with a diagnosis of PCOS and thirty control group participants were included in this case-control study. Hormone profiles of the participants (subfatin, asprosin, insulin, prolactin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), oestradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-SO4), lipid profiles [(total testosterone, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglyceride, cholesterol)], fasting blood sugar (FBS) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) values were measured. While the levels of asprosin, LDL and triglyceride, TSH, E2, FSH, LH, DHEA-SO4 were found to be significantly higher in patients with PCOS compared to controls (p = .005; p = .01), subfatin and HDL levels were found to be low. Significantly decreasing subfatin and increasing asprosin levels in circulation in PCOS may play a role in the etiopathology of this disease and that they may also be new candidate molecules in addition to classical laboratory parameters in the diagnosis and follow-up of PCOS in the future.Impact statementWhat is already known on this subject? The studies investigating the relationship between PCOS and asprosin are contradictory. Although subfatin has been studied in many metabolic diseases, it has not been studied yet whether it is associated with PCOS. Furthermore, whether there is a mutual relationship between subfatin and asprosin in patients with PCOS has not been studied yet.What do the results of this study add? This available data indicates that significantly decreasing subfatin and increasing asprosin levels in the circulation in PCOS may play a role in the etiopathology of this disease.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? The findings are promising in that decreasing subfatin and increasing asprosin levels will shed new light on reproductive endocrinology changes caused by PCOS and may help to clarify the pathophysiology of PCOS. Furthermore, in our study, the asprosin/subfatin ratio was above three in PCOS disease. This ratio reported here is anticipated to contribute to the course or follow-up of the disease in the future. Also, subfatin has been investigated here for the first time, may also be a new candidate molecule in addition to classical laboratory parameters in the diagnosis and follow-up of PCOS.
