Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diabetic osteoporosis (DOP) is a metabolic disease that occurs in patients with diabetes due to insufficient insulin secretion. This condition can lead to sensory neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and hypoglycemic events, which can increase the risk of fractures. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor, in treating diabetic osteoporosis (DOP) and preventing fractures. METHODS This quasi-experimental study enrolled 100 patients with diabetic osteoporosis from February 2023 to February 2024. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 50) and a control group (n = 50). The intervention group received Empagliflozin in combination with symptomatic treatment, while the control group received only symptomatic treatment. The treatment duration was six months. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), 2-hour postprandial blood glucose (2 h PG), glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (Hb A1c), bone mineral density (BMD), serum phosphorus and calcium concentration were measured after the intervention and the incidence of fracture was followed up for 12 months. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23. Descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, and percentage) and analytical methods (t test, Chi square) were also used to analyze the data. RESULTS After six months of treatment, the intervention group exhibited significantly lower levels of FBG (P < 0.001), 2 h-PG (P = 0.001), and HbA1c (P < 0.001) than the control group. Additionally, bone mineral density, serum phosphorus, and calcium levels were significantly higher in the intervention group (P < 0.001). After a 12-months follow-up, the incidence of fractures in the intervention group was 2%, while it was 16.33% in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Empagliflozin, when combined with symptomatic treatment, demonstrates a positive clinical effect in patients with diabetic osteoporosis. The treatment effectively improves blood glucose metabolism, bone mineral density, and phosphorus and calcium metabolism, ultimately leading to a significant reduction in the incidence of fracture.

Abstract
With the global population growth and shortage of food, the competition between humans and animal for food will become increasingly fierce. Therefore, the development of unconventional energy feed cassava feed is of great significance. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of cassava root meal (CRM) on the growth performance, apparent digestibility, and organ and intestinal indices of broiler chickens. A total of 140 one-day-old chicks were randomly assigned to four dietary treatment groups [control diet (CT), 15% CRM (CRM15), 30% CRM (CRM30), and 45% CRM (CRM45)] with five replicates of seven birds per replicate. The results showed that the body weight of broiler chickens fed diets containing CRM were significantly lower than that in the CT group at 21 and 42 days of age, the average daily gain and average daily feed intake in the CRM group were significantly lower than those in the CT group from 1 to 21 days of age. However, from days 22 to 42, there were no significant differences between CRM15 and CT birds regarding average daily gain and average daily feed intake. but there was no difference in feed conversion rate between the CRM15 and CT groups. At 42 days of age, there were no significant differences between CRM15 and CT birds in in body measurements, the slaughter performance and the percentage of semi-eviscerated yield. The addition of CRM reduced the proportion of breast and thigh muscles during the feeding period, although we detected no significant difference between CRM15 and CT regarding the apparent digestibility of nutrients. Collectively, our findings indicate that 15% cassava was the optimal proportion for supplementing diets for broiler chicken production.

Abstract
A 66-year-old male patient receiving maintenance hemodialysis with arteriovenous fistula of the right upper limb was admitted to the hospital because of intermittent syncope, dizziness, and distension. Central venography indicated occlusion of the right brachiocephalic vein (RBV), and the contrast agent flowed from the right internal jugular vein into the intracranial vein, then into the contralateral internal jugular vein, and finally returned into the superior vena cava. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty was performed to dilate the RBV. Postoperatively, the contrast agent flowed smoothly into the right atrium through the RBV and the superior vena cava. Craniocerebral magnetic resonance angiography and magnetic resonance venography indicated that the intracranial venous reflux disappeared. The patient did not experience syncope again; moreover, dizziness and distention improved, as well as right facial swelling and right eye congestion, and he was discharged 2 days later. Two months later, the patient complained of dizziness. Venography under digital subtraction angiography showed severe stenosis at the RBV and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty was performed; moreover, stent placement was performed. The contrast agent flowed smoothly into the right atrium through the RBV and the superior vena cava again. Ultimately, the headaches and dizziness improved significantly postoperatively. Hence, if hemodialysis patients present with neurological symptoms, intracranial venous congestion should be monitored; nonetheless, most patients have a good prognosis when treated appropriately.

Abstract
1. This study combined genome-wide selection signal analysis with RNA-sequencing to identify candidate genes associated with high altitude adaptation and egg production performance in Nixi chickens (NXC).2. Based on the whole-genome data from 20 NXC (♂:10; ♀:10), the population selection signal was analysed by sliding window analysis. The selected genes were screened by combination with the population differentiation statistic (FST). The sequence diversity statistic (θπ). RNA-seq was performed on the ovarian tissues of NXC (n = 6) and Lohmann laying hens (n = 6) to analyse the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the two groups. The functional enrichment analysis of the selected genes and differentially expressed genes was performed.3. There were 742 genes under strong positive selection and 509 differentially expressed genes screened in NXC. Integrated analysis of the genome and transcriptome revealing 26 overlapping genes. The candidate genes for adaptation to a high-altitude environment, as well as for egg production, disease resistance, vision and pigmentation in NXC were preliminarily screened.4. The results provided theoretical guidance for further research on the genetic resource protection and utilisation of NXC.

Abstract
High expression of the zinc finger X-chromosomal protein (ZFX) correlates with proliferation, aggressiveness, and development in many types of cancers. In the current report, we investigated the efficacy of ZFX in mouse pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) proliferation during pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). PASMCs were cultured in hypoxic conditions. Real-time PCR and western blotting were conducted to detect the expression of ZFX. Cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion were, respectively, measured by CCK-8, flow cytometry, wound scratchy, and transwell assays. Glycolytic ability was validated by the extracellular acidification rate and oxygen consumption rate. Transcriptome sequencing technology was used to explore the genes affected by ZFX knockdown. Luciferase and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays were utilized to verify the possible binding site of ZFX and YAP1. Mice were subjected to hypoxia for 21 days to induce PAH. The right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) was measured and ratio of RV/LV + S was calculated. The results show that ZFX was increased in hypoxia-induced PASMCs and mice. ZFX knockdown inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of PASMC. Using RNA sequencing, we identify glycolysis and YAP as a key signaling of ZFX. ZFX knockdown inhibited Glycolytic ability. ZFX strengthened the transcription activity of YAP1, thereby regulating the YAP signaling. YAP1 overexpression reversed the effect of ZFX knockdown on hypoxia-treated PASMCs. In conclusion, ZFX knockdown protected mice from hypoxia-induced PAH injury. ZFX knockdown dramatically reduced RVSP and RV/(LV + S) in hypoxia-treated mice.

Abstract
Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is a highly contagious pathogen that has caused significant economic losses in the livestock industry. Peptide vaccines engineered with the protective epitopes of FMDV have provided a safer alternative for disease prevention than the traditional inactivated vaccines. However, the immunogenicity of the peptide is usually poor and therefore an adjuvant is required. Here, we showed that recombinant T4 phages displaying the B-cell epitope of the FMDV VP1 protein (VP1130-158), without additional adjuvants, induced similar levels of antigen-specific IgG1 but higher levels of IgG2a compared to the peptide vaccine. Incorporation of a CD4+ T cell epitope, either 3A21-35 of FMDV 3A protein or P2830-844 of tetanus toxoid, further enhanced the immunogenicity of VP1-T4 phage nanoparticles. Interestingly, the extrinsic adjuvant cannot enhance the immunogenicity of the nanoparticles, indicating the intrinsic adjuvant activities of T4 phage. Furthermore, the recombinant T4 phage can be produced on a large scale within a short period of time at a relatively low-cost using Escherichia coli, heralding its potential in the development of a safe and effective FMDV vaccine.

Abstract
Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease with increasing rates globally. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have higher risk of developing NAFLD. Patients with a higher degree of liver fibrosis in NAFLD are at an increased risk for liver-related mortality, but get missed easily during the referral process. This project aims to improve early detection and linkage-to-care of fibrotic NAFLD patients. Methods: We utilized a combination of automated electronic health record (EHR)-based fibrosis (FIB)-4 score and directed provider education. A health-system wide FIB-4 score calculator that providers can easily add to their workflow for NAFLD patient triaging. Data were analyzed at 6 and 12 months after implementation. Results: Postimplementation, there was an increase in patients referred to hepatology with higher degree of liver fibrosis and decreased referral to hepatology with low risk of liver fibrosis, measured by FIB-4 score. At baseline, ∼55% of referred patient to hepatology had FIB-4 score <1.3 compared to 38% at 12 months postimplementation. There was an increase in referral of patients with FIB-4 scores >1.3 when compared to preinterventions, 62% versus 45%. This is most pronounced in patients with severe fibrotic disease with FIB-4 score >2.67, 30% versus 12%. Conclusions: Automated FIB-4 score in EHR can improve appropriate linkage-to-care for at-risk fibrotic NAFLD, especially when coupled with targeted provider education. The durability of such improvement is essential to study along with the need to increase broad acceptance across health systems.

Success of Liquid Tumor Biopsy in Men with Metastatic Prostate Cancer According to Self-Identified Race. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2023; 117:e446-e447. Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Liquid biopsy using cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is increasingly used to identify somatic prostate cancer (PrCa) alterations when tissue biopsy of a metastatic lesion is infeasible or impractical. High-risk somatic alterations identified by cfDNA have been recently shown to predict the benefit of metastasis-directed therapy with stereotactic body radiation therapy in PrCa. However, given the older age of PrCa patients, liquid biopsy is often contaminated with alterations related to clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), generating uncertainty in the clinical utility of the results. Given the higher incidence and aggressiveness of metastatic PrCa in Black men, we sought to determine if the success of cfDNA testing varied by race in a large and diverse cohort of United States Veterans with metastatic PrCa, hypothesizing that race would not influence the success of cfDNA testing. MATERIALS/METHODS Veterans with metastatic PrCa underwent next-generation sequencing of cfDNA biopsy specimens through the VA National Precision Oncology Program from February 2019 to November 2022. Successful identification of PrCa with cfDNA testing was defined as the identification of an alteration in one or more PrCa-related related genes in the gene panel tested (AR, CDK12, SPOP, MED12, CCND1, BRAF, AKT1, TMPRSS2, ERG, ETV1, and ETV4). Univariate logistic regression was employed to explore the association between patient self-identified race, as well as other patient and disease-specific factors at the time of cfDNA biopsy, with the likelihood of yielding a successful cfDNA biopsy result. RESULTS A total of 2066 cfDNA tests from 1985 Veterans were related to a diagnosis of PrCa, passed quality control measures, and were linkable to patient-level demographics. Median age at testing was 74, median PSA at testing was 22.7, median PSA doubling time (PSADT) was 3.6 months, and median Gleason score was 8. 57% of Veterans self-identified as White, 33% as Black, and 10% as Other. Eight hundred fourteen (39%) tests were deemed successful by finding a PrCa related gene alteration. Among successful tests, the most frequently encountered alterations were AR alterations in 60.4% White men and 33.9% Black men (p = 0.72), followed by TMPRSS2 alterations in 70.3% White men and 22.0% Black men (p<0.001). Despite a lower rate of PrCa-specific alterations in Black men, on univariate analysis, Veteran self-identified race was not associated with successful cfDNA testing (OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.78-1.14, p = 0.6), whereas PSA in quintiles 2-4, PSADT <12 months, and unit increase in Gleason score were associated with successful cfDNA testing (p<0.01 for all). CONCLUSION Successful cfDNA biopsy in metastatic PrCa is associated with PSA and PSADT, but not related to patient self-identified race. In appropriate clinical scenarios, patients who self-identify as Black or White are equally likely to have PrCa-specific alterations detected on cfDNA testing when evaluating metastatic PrCa patients for local and systemic therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood asthma is a major global health concern. ADP-ribosylation factor 6 (ARF6) is a low-molecular-weight GTPase; however, its role in childhood asthma remains unclear. METHODS Ovalbumin (OVA)-challenged neonatal mice and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1)-induced BEAS-2B cells were used as in vivo and in vitro models of childhood asthma, respectively. RESULTS Upon OVA stimulation, ARF6 expression was upregulated in the lung tissue. Neonatal mice administered SehinH3 (an ARF6 inhibitor) exhibited improved pulmonary pathological injury, along with reduced inflammatory cell infiltration in the lungs and cytokine release in bronchial alveolar lavage fluid and serum (interleukin [IL]-3, IL-5, IL-13, IgE, and OVA-specific IgE). SehinH3 treatment restrained epithelial - mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the lungs of asthmatic mice, as evidenced by increased E-cadherin and decreased N-cadherin and α-smooth muscle actin expression. Different TGF-β1 exposures to BEAS-2B cells induced a time- and dose-dependent increase in ARF6 expression in vitro. Upon TGF-β1 stimulation, ARF6 knockdown repressed EMT and SehinH3 treatment caused similar results in BEAS-2B cells. The transcription factor E2F8 is involved in diverse biological functions and its increased expression was confirmed in vivo and in vitro. Dual-luciferase assays confirmed that E2F8 binds to the ARF6 promoter and promotes its transcriptional activity. In vitro results revealed that E2F8 silencing suppressed EMT, whereas rescue experiments showed that ARF6 overexpression partly reversed these phenomena. CONCLUSION Our study showed that ARF6 is associated with childhood asthma progression and may be positively regulated by E2F8. These results provide insight into the pathogenesis and treatment of childhood asthma.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the influencing factors of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with knee osteoarthritis, and to analyze the non-surgical treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Demographic variables, treatment modalities, imaging data, and 12-item short form health survey (SF-12) scores of patients with knee osteoarthritis in orthopedic outpatient departments of five hospitals in Beijing from December 2017 to November 2018 were collected to analyze influencing factors of HRQoL and non-surgical treatment. Results: A total of 2 034 patients were included. There were 530 males (26.1%) and 1 504 females (73.9%), with a mean age of (59.17±10.22) years. In terms of physical quality of life, female patients with knee osteoarthritis had lower physical components summary (PCS) compared with male patients (β=-0.521, P=0.036); patients aged ≥64 years had lower PCS than those aged<55 years (β=-0.636, P=0.026). Patients with an education of more than 12 years had higher PCS than those with less than 10 years (β=1.063, P<0.001). Compared to patients with mild clinical symptoms, the PCS of patients with moderate clinical symptoms was lower (β=-0.860, P=0.002), while the PCS of those with severe clinical symptoms was much lower (β=-1.126, P<0.001). Patients treated with combination therapy had higher PCS than untreated patients (β=0.731, P=0.005). In terms of mental quality of life, compared to patients engaged in sedentary work, the mental components summary (MCS) of patients engaged in mild manual labor jobs was lower (β=-0.712, P=0.015); Compared to patients with a Charson comorbidity index of 0, patients with a Charlson comorbidity index ≥ 2 had lower MCS (β=-1.183, P=0.007). In the past 12 months, 648 (31.9%), 143 (7.0%), 406 (20.0%), 680 (33.4%), 343 (16.9%), 681 (33.5%), 170 (8.4%) patients had used non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), acetaminophen, glucosamine/chondroitin formulations, physical therapy, articular cavity puncture injection, traditional Chinese medicine treatment and exercise therapy, respectively. Total of 451 patients (22.2%) received monotherapy and 889 patients (43.7%) received combination therapy. Conclusions: The major non-surgical treatment methods for patients with knee osteoarthritis in Beijing are NSAIDs, physiotherapy and traditional Chinese medicine. Combination therapy is used more frequently than monotherapy. Physical quality of life is related to gender, age, education, severity of symptoms and treatment, while mental quality of life is related to occupational labor and comorbidities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the significance of liraglutide combined with dapagliflozin or empagliflozin in the prevention of early diabetic nephropathy (DN) and its effects on renal function indices. METHODS Three hundred patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treated in our hospital from April 2019 to April 2020 were retrospectively included and divided into two groups according to different treatment regimens. Among them, 150 patients who received liraglutide alone were included in the single-drug group, and 150 patients treated with liraglutide combined with dapagliflozin or empagliflozin were included in the combination group. The baseline data and the improvement of inflammatory indices, blood glucose indices and renal function-related indices were compared between the two groups of patients. RESULTS The baseline data such as age, body mass index, retinopathy, and course of disease had no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). After treatment, the waist-to-hip ratio, total body fat percentage, total body fat mass, total body lean mass, and A/G ratio were significantly decreased in both groups (P < 0.05) compared with before treatment, and were significantly lower in the combination group than in the single-drug group (P < 0.05). The combination group had significantly lower urinary transferrin (Tf), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), retinol-binding protein (RBP), homocysteine (Hcy), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), 24 h urinary albumin excretion ratio (UAER), urine albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) and urinary liver-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) levels, and higher secretory frizzled-related protein 5 levels than the single-drug group after treatment (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Liraglutide combined with dapagliflozin or empagliflozin treatment can effectively reduce the levels of Tf, NGAL and TNF-α in patients with T2DM, and improve the renal function in terms of IGF-1, RBP, Hcy, BNP, UAER, UACR, L-FABP, showing high treatment safety.

Abstract
Background:Studies have not provided clear enough evidence on the direct association between cigarette smoking and poverty. This study aims to assess the association of householder smoking with near-poverty households, and the potential mediating effect of NCDs.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted from November 2019 to October 2020 in relatively underdeveloped regions in China. In total, 2,409 households were investigated in areas under the jurisdiction of 24 primary health care (PHC) institutions of eight provinces. Pearson's χ2-test was performed, and multivariable logistic regression and extended probit regression models were fitted to examine the association between householder smoking and near-poverty households. Moreover, generalized structural equation modeling was used to explore the mediating effect of NCDs.ResultsAfter adjusting for all other potential confounding factors, compared with households headed by never-smokers, households headed by smokers exhibited significantly elevated risks of being near poverty, with an odds ratio of 2.01 (95% CI: 0.48–0.91). We also found that living in rural areas and having a low education level both had a negative effect on being near poverty. Additionally, NCDs had a significantly positive mediating effect, with a 31.57% effect of householder smoking on near-poverty status mediated by NCDs; the indirect effect was estimated to be 0.17 (95% CI: 0.04–0.31).ConclusionsHouseholder smoking significantly elevated the risk of the household being near poverty, and suffering NCDs had a positive mediating effect.

Abstract
Objective: This study aims to dissect the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicinal
herbs against asthma; we chose to first focus on the main chemical components of licorice
to investigate their contribution to asthmatic inflammation inhibition. Methods:
Production of cellular nucleotide molecules such as cAMP, cGMP, and cGAMP was examined by
using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Enzyme-encoding genes were tested
in vitro using quantitative real-time PCR and protein level was
detected by Western blotting analysis. In addition, co-culturing of murine dendritic cells
together with T cells was conducted to examine the expression of cytokine genes and host
immune response. Results: We found that one of the components within licorice, named
liquiritigenin (LR), could efficiently enhance cAMP production in different cell lines.
The augmentation of such molecules was linked to the high expression of cAMP synthesis
genes and repressed expression of cAMP breaking down genes. In addition, the downstream
immune response was also alleviated by the increase in cAMP levels by LR, suggesting the
great potential of this molecule against inflammation. Subsequent immunological tests
showed that LR could efficiently inhibit the expression of several cytokines and alter the
NF-κB pathway and T cell polarization. Conclusion: Altogether, we have identified a
promising antiasthmatic agent LR that could exhibit immunosuppressive function by
elevating the cAMP level.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Tumor induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic disorder in which overproduction of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) by mesenchymal tumor results in decreased renal phosphorus reabsorption and low to inappropriately normal 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, leading to hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia. Patients often present with bone pain, fractures, muscle weakness, and progressive decline in mobility. Due to the nonspecific nature of presenting symptoms of TIO diagnosis is often delayed. Clinical Case: A 55-year-old male presented with complaints of chest pain, shortness of breath, and generalized weakness following a ground level fall. Patient also reported a 10-year history of osteoarthritis with chronic back pain and 1-year history of generalized weakness, resulting in significant decline in functional status. On work-up, the initial CT scan of chest revealed multiple fractures including ribs, manubrium, scapula, and pubic rami. Subsequent biochemical evaluation was remarkable for hypophosphatemia to low of 1.3 mg/dL (2.4 - 5.0 mg/dL), low of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D of 13.1 pg/ml (19.9 - 79.3 pg/mL), reduced tubular phosphate reabsorption rate of 28% (normal > 80%) ratifying for renal phosphate wasting, normal iPTH level, and elevated serum FGF-23 level of 460 (normal < 180). Then, localization imaging for TIO was performed. After PET/CT scan showing increased uptake at the sternal area suggestive of lytic metastasis, subsequent CT angiogram of the chest identified mottled, irregular, mildly expansile appearance of the sternal manubrium. Sternal biopsy revealed phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor with positive FGF 23 mRNA expression. Surgical resection was delayed due to poor functional status and concurrent discovery of an EBV-positive nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Prior to surgery patient was treated with phosphorus and calcitriol supplements. Post-operatively serum phosphorus and FGF-23 levels were normalized. Patient also improved clinically. Patients treatment course was complicated by secondary hyperparathyroidism; however, this improved following surgery. Conclusion: Diagnosis of TIO can be delayed due to its nonspecific symptoms. Thus, in patients with chronic bone pain, muscle weakness, and atraumatic fractures, TIO should be kept on the differential and these patients should undergo thorough biochemical and imaging evaluation. Tumor localization could be challenging. Patients should be managed with supplements of active vitamin D and phosphorus with goal to normalize phosphorus level to prevent further bone demineralization prior to surgery. However, surgical intervention remains the mainstay of management as this is curative of TIO.

Natural Compound α-PGG and Its Synthetic Derivative 6Cl-TGQ Alter Insulin Secretion: Evidence for Diminishing Glucose Uptake as a Mechanism. Diabetes Metab Syndr Obes 2021; 14:759-772. Abstract
PURPOSE Previously we showed that natural compound α-penta-galloyl-glucose (α-PGG) and its synthetic derivative 6-chloro-6-deoxy-1,2,3,4-tetra-O-galloyl-α-D-glucopyranose (6Cl-TGQ) act to improve insulin signaling in adipocytes by increasing glucose transport. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of actions of α-PGG and 6Cl-TGQ on insulin secretion. METHODS Mouse islets and/or INS-1832/13 beta-cells were used to test the effects of our compounds on glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS), intracellular calcium [Ca2+]i using fura-2AM, glucose transport activity via a radioactive glucose uptake assay, intracellular ATP/ADP, and extracellular acidification (ECAR) and mitochondrial oxygen consumption rates (OCAR) using Seahorse metabolic analysis. RESULTS Both compounds reduced GSIS in beta-cells without negatively affecting cell viability. The compounds primarily diminished glucose uptake into islets and beta-cells. Despite insulin-like effects in the peripheral tissues, these compounds do not act through the insulin receptor in islets. Further interrogation of the stimulus-secretion pathway showed that all the key metabolic factors involved in GSIS including ECAR, OCAR, ATP/ADP ratios, and [Ca2+]i of INS-1832/13 cells were diminished after the compound treatment. CONCLUSION The compounds suppress glucose uptake of the beta-cells, which consequently slows down the rates of glycolysis and ATP synthesis, leading to decrease in [Ca2+]i and GSIS. The difference between adipocytes and beta-cells in effects on glucose uptake is of great interest. Further structural and functional modifications could produce new compounds with optimized therapeutic potentials for different target cells. The higher potency of synthetic 6Cl-TGQ in enhancing insulin signaling in adipocytes but lower potency in reducing glucose uptake in beta-cells compared to α-PGG suggests the feasibility of such an approach.

Abstract
1. Dulong Chickens (DLCs) live at high altitude (~3000 m) and humidity (~90%), are endemic to the Yunnan province, and have gradually developed unique physiological characteristics, but their genetic basis is still unclear. Using the fixation index (FST ) approach, based on whole-genome resequencing, DLCs were analysed to uncover the genomic architecture of the population and candidate genes involved in selection during domestication. 2. A total of 469 candidate genes were obtained to be putatively under selection in DLCs. Further investigations revealed the genic footprint for local adaptation (high-altitude and high-humidity) as the genic signatures that are involved in economic traits (related to egg production). 3. Candidate genes were identified that may be associated with disease resistance, aggressiveness, small body size and positive selection of vision in DLCs. 4. These data revealed loci of selective signals that operate during selection for production at high altitude and humidity.

Abstract
This study sought to investigate Chinese farmers' attitude towards animal welfare by using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). According to the TPB, an individual's intention to behave in a certain way is determined by his/her attitude towards the behaviour (specific attitude —
importance — and general attitudes), the perceived behavioural control (easiness), and the supposed opinion of the people who are important to him/her (subjective norms). A total of 253 questionnaires are used, which included the three main animal productions in chena (swine, poultry
and cattle). Chinese farmers have perceived the improvement of animal welfare as two abstracts: general attitudes (reward-seeking, and empathic farmer); and four specific categories of actions (favourable environment, animal health, humane treatment of animals and farmers' well-being). Our
analysis revealted that general and specific attitudes were the strongest predictors of farmers' intentions to improve animal welfare in the questionnaire study. In fact, Chinese farmers considered it fairly important to improve the animal welfare meaures considered in the survey. In contrast,
the same animal welfare measures were considered difficult to improve by the farmers as indicated by the lack of association between the easiness of improving animal welfare and the intentions. In addition, veterinarians, agricultural advisers, and scientific experts were considered to be
relatively influential subjective norms as regards the activities of the farmers. This is the first study to provide an insight into the underlying meanings and values of Chinese farmers views on improvements to animal welfare.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the microbiological test, antibiotic sensitivity and surgical treatment of periprosthetic joint infection(PJI) cases in post total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional survey was conducted on 318 patients who underwent THA or TKA in 9 clinical centers in Beijing from January 2014 to December 2016.The data of microbiology, antibiotic sensitivity and surgical treatment were collected. The average age of patients was (62.3±13.1) years old (range: 21-86 years old), including 145 males and 173 females. The body mass index was (25.6±3.8) kg/m (2) (range: 15.6-38.1 kg/m(2)). Results: In total, 318 patients had microorganisms detected by periprosthetic tissue culture or synovial fluid culture, 209 cases (65.7%) had Gram-positive bacteria, 29 cases (9.1%) had Gram-negative bacteria, 10 cases (3.1%) had fungi, 3 cases (0.9%) had non-tuberculous mycobacteria, 72 cases (22.6%) were negative, 69 cases (21.7%) had methicillin-resistant bacteria. The antibiotic sensitivity results showed that the overall resistance rate of penicillin, cefuroxime, amoxicillin+clavulanic acid was 79.9%, 69.9%, and 68.1%, respectively; meropenem, vancomycin, and linezolid resistance rate was 0. For the treatment methods of hip and knee PJI, two-stage revision surgery acounted for 72.9% (108/148) and 64.1% (109/170), respectively. One-stage revision surgery accounted for 21.6% (32/148) and 7.6% (13/170), and open debridement surgery accounted for 4.7%(7/148) and 26.4% (45/170). Conclusions: Gram-positive bacteria was still the main pathogen of PJI.The methicillin-resistant bacteria and rare bacteria should be payed attention to. The Majority of hip and knee PJI cases were treated by two-stage revision surgery.
