Transition-metal-based Catalysts for Electrochemical Synthesis of Ammonia by Nitrogen Reduction Reaction: Advancing the Green Ammonia Economy

Ammonia (NH3), a cornerstone in the chemical industry, has historically been pivotal for producing various valuable products, notably fertilizers. Its significance is further underscored in the modern energy landscape, where NH3 is seen as a promising medium for hydrogen storage and transportation. However, the conventional Haber-Bosch process, which accounts for approximately 170 million ton of NH3 produced globally each year, is energy-intensive and environmentally damaging. The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) emerges as a sustainable alternative that operates in ambient conditions and uses renewable energy sources. Despite its potential, the NRR faces challenges, including the inherent stability of nitrogen and its competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction. Transition metals, especially ruthenium (Ru) and molybdenum (Mo), have demonstrated promise as catalysts, enhancing the efficiency of the NRR. Ru excels in catalytic activity, while Mo offers robustness. Strategies like heteroatom doping are being pursued to mitigate NRR challenges, especially the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. This review delves into the advancements of Ru and Mo-based catalysts for electrochemical ammonia synthesis, elucidating the NRR mechanisms, and championing the transition towards a greener ammonia economy. It also seeks to elucidate the core principles underpinning the NRR mechanism. This shift aims not only to address challenges inherent to traditional production methods but also to align with the overarching goals of global sustainability.

Advancements in Biomass-Derived Activated Carbon for Sustainable Hydrogen Storage: A Comprehensive Review

The increasing global energy demand, which is being driven by population growth and urbanization, necessitates the exploration of sustainable energy sources. While traditional energy generation predominantly relies on fossil fuels, it also contributes to alarming CO2 emissions. Hydrogen has emerged as a promising alternative energy carrier with its zero-carbon emission profile. However, effective hydrogen storage remains a challenge. When exposed to hydrogen, conventional metallic vessels, once considered to be the primary hydrogen carriers, are prone to brittleness-induced cracking. This has spurred interest in alternative storage solutions, particularly porous materials like metal-organic frameworks and activated carbon (AC). Among these, biomass-derived AC stands out for its eco-friendly nature, cost-effectiveness, and optimal adsorption properties. This review offers a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the synthesis, characterization, and hydrogen storage capabilities of AC. The unique benefits of biomass-derived sources are highlighted, as is the pivotal role of chemical and physical activation processes. Furthermore, we identify existing challenges and propose future research directions in AC-based hydrogen storage. This compilation aims to serve as a foundation for potential innovations in sustainable hydrogen storage solutions.

Hydrogenation of CO2 into Value-added Chemicals Using Solid-Supported Catalysts

Reducing CO2 emissions is an urgent global priority. In this context, several mitigation strategies, including CO2 tax and stringent legislation, have been adopted to halt the deterioration of the natural environment. Also, carbon recycling procedures undoubtedly help reduce net emissions into the atmosphere, enhancing sustainability. Utilizing Earth's abundant CO2 to produce high-potential green chemicals and light fuels opens new avenues for the chemical industry. In this context, many attempts have been devoted to converting CO2 as a feedstock into various value-added chemicals, such as CH4, lower methanol, light olefins, gasoline, and higher hydrocarbons, for numerous applications involving various catalytic reactions. Although several CO2-conversion methods have been used, including electrochemical, photochemical, and biological approaches, the hydrogenation method allows the reaction to be tuned to produce the targeted compound without significantly altering infrastructure. This review discusses the numerous hydrogenation routes and their challenges, such as catalyst design, operation, and the combined art of structure-activity relationships for the various product formations.

Synthesis and Oxygen Evolution Reaction Application of a Co-Cd Based Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework

In the realm of renewable energy technologies, the development of efficient and durable electrocatalysts is paramount, especially for applications like electrochemical water splitting. This research focuses on synthesizing a novel bimetallic metal-organic framework (BMMOF11) using earth-abundant elements, cobalt (Co) and cadmium (Cd). BMMOF11 showcases a distinctive structure with distorted octahedral chains of CoO and CdO, linked by benzene tricarboxylic acid (BTC). Our study primarily investigates the electrocatalytic efficiency of BMMOF11, particularly in water oxidation reactions. For practical analysis, BMMOF11 was anchored onto nickel foam, forming BMMOF11/NF, to evaluate its electrocatalytic properties. Electrochemical testing revealed that BMMOF11/NF begins water oxidation at an onset potential of 1.62 V versus RHE, demonstrating high activity with a lower overpotential of 0.4 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm2. Moreover, BMMOF11/NF maintained stable water splitting performance, sustaining a current density of approximately 70 mA/cm2 under a voltage of 1.9 V relative to RHE. These findings indicate that BMMOF11/NF is a promising candidate for large-scale electrochemical water splitting, offering a blend of high activity and stability.

Poly[(2-methacryloyloxy)Ethyl]Trimethylammonium Chloride Supported Cobalt Oxide Nanoparticles as an Active Electrocatalyst for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

To combat with energy crisis considering clean energy, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to implement electrolytic hydrogen fuel production in real life. Here, straightforward chemical synthesis pathways are followed to prepare cobalt tetraoxide nanoparticles (Co3O4NPs) in an alkaline OER process using poly[(2-methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (Co3O4NPs@PMTC) as support to prevent aggregation. In material characterization, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirms the crystallinity of the synthesized Co3O4NPs@PMTC, and Raman spectroscopy indicates that the Co3O4NPs contain cubic close-packed oxides. The morphological analysis reveals the wrinkle-like disruption which is distributed evenly owing to the folded nanosheet arrays. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicates the presence of a significant number of cobalt atoms in the Co3O4NPs, and elemental mapping analysis demonstrates the composition of the NPs. At a current density of 10 mA cm-2, oxygen is emitted at 1.67 V delivering an overpotential of 440 mV. This unique structure of Co3O4NPs@PMTC provides beneficial functions that are responsible for a large number of active sites and the rapid release of oxygen gas with long-term stability. Through kinetic study, we found a Tafel slope of 48.9 mV dec-1 which proves the catalytic behavior of Co3O4NPs@PMTC is promising toward the OER process.

Identification of Suitable Mesh Size of Commercial Stainless-Steel for Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The study examines the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalytic efficiency of various stainless-steel mesh (SSM) sizes in electrolytic cells. Stainless steel is chosen due to its widespread availability and stability, making it an economically viable option. The primary objective of this investigation is to determine the optimal stainless-steel mesh size among those currently widely available on the market. The classification of stainless-steel mesh sizes as SS304 is confirmed by the minimal compositional variations observed across all mesh sizes through electron dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectra and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses. Remarkably, CV experiments carried out at different scan rates indicate that SSM 200 has the maximum specific electrochemical surface area (ECSA). As a result, SSM 200 demonstrates superior performance in terms of current density response and shows the lowest overpotential in the alkaline medium compared to other stainless-steel mesh sizes. Furthermore, the SSM 200 exhibits a low overpotential of 337 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope of 62.2 mV/decade, surpassing the performance of several previously reported electrodes for the OER. Stability tests conducted under constant voltage further confirm the remarkable stability of SSM 200, making it an ideal anode for electrolytic cell applications. These findings emphasize the cost-effectiveness and high stability of SSM 200, presenting intriguing possibilities for future research and advancements in this field.

Plant-assisted green preparation of silver nanoparticles using leaf extract of Dalbergia sissoo and their antioxidant, antibacterial and catalytic applications

Plant-mediated preparation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is thought to be a more economical and environmentally benign process in comparison to physical and chemical synthesis methods. In the present study, the aqueous leaf extract of Dalbergia sissoo was prepared and utilized to reduce silver ion (Ag+) during the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (DL-AgNPs). The formation of DL-AgNPs was verified using UV-Vis spectra, exhibiting the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at around 450 nm. FT-IR analysis revealed the kinds of phytochemicals that serve as reducing and capping agents while DL-AgNPs are being synthesized. Analysis of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) images verified the development of spherical and oval-shaped DL-AgNPs, with sizes ranging from 10 to 25 nm. The stability and particle size distribution of synthesized DL-AgNPs were ensured by zeta potential and DLS (dynamic light scattering) investigations. Additionally, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of DL-AgNPs. In antioxidant experiments, DL-AgNPs demonstrated significant scavenging capacities of DPPH and ABTS radicals with EC50 values of 51.32 and 33.32 μg/mL, respectively. The antibacterial activity of DL-AgNPs was shown to be significant against harmful bacteria, with a maximum zone of inhibition (21.5 ± 0.86 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, DL-AgNPs exhibited effective catalytic activity to degrade environment-polluting dyes (methylene blue, methyl orange, and Congo red) and toxic chemicals (p-nitrophenol). The results of all these studies suggested that DL-AgNPs made from the leaf extract of Dalbergia sissoo have merit for application in the environmental and biomedical fields.

Impact of ALDH1A1 and NQO1 gene polymorphisms on the response and toxicity of chemotherapy in Bangladeshi breast cancer patients

PURPOSE

Cyclophosphamide, Epirubicin/Doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil (CEF or CAF) chemotherapy has long been a standard first-line treatment for breast cancer. The genetic variations of enzymes that are responsible for the metabolism of these drugs have been linked to altered treatment response and toxicity. Two drug-metabolizing enzymes ALDH1A1 and NQO1 are critically involved in the pathways of CEF/CAF metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ALDH1A1 (rs13959) and NQO1 (rs1800566) polymorphisms on treatment response and toxicities caused by adjuvant (ACT) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) where CEF/CAF combination was used to treat Bangladeshi breast cancer patients.

METHODS

A total of 330 patients were recruited from various hospitals, with 150 receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy and 180 receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. To extract genomic DNA, a non-enzymatic simple salting out approach was adopted. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method was used to detect genetic polymorphisms. Unconditional logistic regression was used to derive odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to study the association between genetic polymorphisms and clinical outcome and toxicity.

RESULTS

A statistically significant association was observed between ALDH1A1 (rs13959) polymorphism and treatment response (TT vs. CC: aOR = 6.40, p = 0.007; recessive model: aOR = 6.38, p = 0.002; allele model: p = 0.032). Patients with the genotypes TT and CT + TT of the NQO1 (rs1800566) polymorphism had a significantly higher risk of toxicities such as anemia (aOR = 0.34, p = 0.006 and aOR = 0.58, p = 0.021), neutropenia (aOR = 0.42, p = 0.044 and aOR = 0.57, p = 0.027), leukopenia (aOR = 0.33, p = 0.010 and aOR = 0.46, p = 0.005), and gastrointestinal toxicity (aOR = 0.30, p = 0.02 and aOR = 0.38, p = 0.006) when compared to the wild CC genotype, while patients with the genotype CT had a significant association with gastrointestinal toxicity (aOR = 0.42, p = 0.02) and leukopenia (aOR = 0.52, p = 0.010). The TT and CT + TT genotypes of rs13959 had a significantly higher risk of anemia (aOR = 2.00, p = 0.037 and aOR = 1.68, p = 0.029). There was no significant association between rs1800566 polymorphism and treatment response.

CONCLUSION

Polymorphisms in ALDH1A1 (rs13959) and NQO1 (rs1800566) may be useful in predicting the probability of treatment response and adverse effects from CEF or CAF-based chemotherapy in breast cancer patients.

Stainless Steel Mesh in Electrochemistry: Comprehensive Applications and Future Prospects

Stainless steel mesh (SSM) has emerged as a cornerstone in electrochemical applications owing to its exemplary versatility, electrical conductivity, mechanical robustness, and corrosion resistance. This state-of-the-art review delves into the diverse roles of SSM across a spectrum of electrochemical domains, including energy conversion and storage devices, water treatment technologies, electrochemical sensors, and catalysis. We meticulously explore its deployment in supercapacitors, batteries, and fuel cells, highlighting its utility as a current collector, electrode, and separator. Highly Stretchable Polyurethane Porous Membranes with Adjustable Morphology for Advanced Lithium Metal Batteries

A highly flexible, tunable morphology membrane with excellent thermal stability and ionic conductivity can endow lithium metal batteries with high power density and reduced dendrite growth. Herein, a porous Polyurethane (PU) membrane with an adjustable morphology was prepared by a simple nonsolvent-induced phase separation technique. The precise control of the final morphology of PU membranes can be achieved through appropriate selection of a nonsolvent, resulting a range of pore structures that vary from finger-like voids to sponge-like pores. The implementation of combinatorial DFT and experimental analysis has revealed that spongy PU porous membranes, especially PU-EtOH, show superior electrolyte wettability (472%), high porosity (75%), good mechanical flexibility, robust thermal dimensional stability (above 170 °C), and elevated ionic conductivity (1.38 mS cm-1) in comparison to the polypropylene (PP) separator. The use of PU-EtOH in Li//Li symmetric cell results in a prolonged lifespan of 800 h, surpasing the longevity of PU or PP cells. Moreover, when subjected to a high rate of 5 C, the LiFePO4/Li half-cell with a PU-EtOH porous membrane displayed better cycling performance (115.4 mAh g-1) compared to the PP separator (104.4 mAh g-1). Finally, the prepared PU porous membrane exhibits significant potential for improving the efficiency and safety of LMBs.

Adiponectin and leptin profiles among obese pregnant women with preeclampsia vs. non-preeclampsia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

Preeclampsia (PE) affects only about 10% of women who meet the criteria for obesity based on their body mass index (BMI). Obesity is suggested to play a role in preeclampsia pathophysiology, and in addition to BMI, associated biomarkers with higher sensitivity and specificity, such as with adipokines from adipose tissue, are needed to enable clinical risk assessment. This study aimed to investigate obese pregnant women with and without PE by comparing clinical profiles and adipokine profiles specific to general adipose tissue (adiponectin and leptin).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This meta-analysis was conducted following the PRISMA and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023478706). We utilized Cochrane, Scopus, and PubMed/Medline databases. The Cochrane ROBINS-I instrument was employed to assess the quality of studies. Pooled standard mean difference (SMD) and p-value were analyzed using a random-effects model with the DerSimonian-Laird method, while subgroup analysis with the Chi-square test and the inconsistency index (I2) were used to assess potential sources of heterogeneity.

RESULTS

Three observational studies included a total of 2,646 obese pregnant women and found that adiponectin was more likely to have a lower level in pregnant women with obesity [SMD=-0.32; 95% CI: -0.34-0.17, p=0.003] and leptin was more likely to be higher in obese pregnant women with PE rather than non-PE [SMD=0.53; 95% CI: -0.19-1.08, p<0.00001].

CONCLUSIONS

Adiponectin levels were more likely to be lower in pregnant women with obesity in the PE group than in the non-PE group, and leptin levels were more likely to be higher.

Optimizing Electrodeposition of Polyaniline on Various Woven Steel Mesh Sizes for Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance

The development of efficient supercapacitors hinges on the innovation of superior electrodes, which are pivotal in augmenting their energy storage capabilities. Supercapacitors, recognized for their high-power density and extended cycle life, play a crucial role as sustainable solutions in addressing energy storage challenges. A fundamental aspect of supercapacitor functionality involves the electrode material, which works in concert with other key components such as the current collector, separator, and electrolyte. This study focuses on evaluating the impact of the current collector material on the performance of symmetric supercapacitors. We investigated the electropolymerization of polyaniline on woven steel mesh current collectors of varying mesh sizes, ranging from 20 to 200 mesh per inch, using assorted deposition conditions. The electrochemically modified woven steel meshes were utilized to construct symmetric supercapacitors. The electrochemical performance of the assembled supercapacitors, configured in a two-electrode system, was investigated using a variety of electrochemical techniques to better understand the kinetics of electrolyte ion migration. Notably, the 20-mesh size, characterized by the fewest pores per inch, demonstrated superior performance with an optimum capacitance of 4730 mF/cm2, an energy density of 317.8 μWh/cm2, and a power density of 400 μW/cm2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm2.

Genetic association of Interleukin-17A polymorphism in Bangladeshi patients with breast and cervical cancer: a case-control study with functional analysis

BACKGROUND

Breast and cervical cancer are the two leading cancers in terms of incidence and mortality. Previous studies reported different interleukins, including interleukin-17A (IL-17A) to be responsible for the development and progression of these malignancies. Therefore, we speculated that the variants in this gene might be associated with these cancer developments in Bangladeshi population. For evaluating the hypothesis, we investigated the association of IL-17A rs3748067 polymorphism with the susceptibility of both breast and cervical cancer.

METHODS

This case-control study was performed on 156 breast cancer patients, 156 cervical cancer patients, and 156 controls using the tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system-polymerase chain reaction. The statistical software package SPSS (version 25.0) was applied for analyses. The genetic association was measured by the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A statistically significant association was considered when p-value ≤ 0.05. Functional analysis was performed using GEPIA and UALCAN databases.

RESULTS

From the calculation of the association of IL-17A rs3748067 with breast cancer, it is found that no genotype or allele showed a statistically significant association (p>0.05). On the other hand, the analysis of IL-17A rs3748067 with cervical cancer demonstrated that CT genotype showed a significant association (CT vs. CC: OR=1.79, p=0.021). In the overdominant model, CT genotype also revealed a statistically significant association with cervical cancer, which is found to be statistically significant (OR=1.84, p=0.015).

CONCLUSION

Our study summarizes that rs3748067 polymorphism in the IL-17A gene may be associated with cervical cancer but not breast cancer in Bangladeshi patients. However, we suggest studies in the future with a larger sample size.

Biocompatible Gold Nanoparticles-Modified Fluorine Doped Tin Oxide Electrode for the Fabrication of Enzyme-Free Glucose Sensor

This work demonstrates the use of jute stick extract as a reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). In UV-Vis spectroscopy, peak at 550 nm was used to confirm the formation of AuNPs. The spherical surface morphology of AuNPs was determined through SEM and TEM analysis. While XRD investigation revealed the crystallinity of the prepared AuNPs. To ensure the biocompatibility of synthesized AuNPs, a bacterial investigation was conducted with negative results towards bacterial strain. The, modified FTO with AuNPs were able to detect glucose in CV analysis and the constructed sensor displayed a wide linear range of 50 μM to 40 mM with a detection limit of 20 μM. Scan rate analysis was performed to determine the charge transfer coefficient (0.42) and Tafel slope (102 mV/decade). Furthermore, the interfacial surface mechanism is illustrated to understand the interaction of glucose with the electrode surface in an alkaline medium and the product formation through the dehydrogenation and hydrolysis process. The prepared sensor also showed good stability, reproducibility, and anti-interference capabilities. In the case of real sample analysis, we used a blood serum sample. A low RSD value (<10 %) suggests the practical use of AuNPs/FTO in real-life applications.

Advanced High-Energy All-Solid-State Hybrid Supercapacitor with Nickel-Cobalt-Layered Double Hydroxide Nanoflowers Supported on Jute Stick-Derived Activated Carbon Nanosheets

Developing efficient, lightweight, and durable all-solid-state supercapacitors is crucial for future energy storage systems. The study focuses on optimizing electrode materials to achieve high capacitance and stability. This study introduces a novel two-step pyrolysis process to synthesize activated carbon nanosheets from jute sticks (JAC), resulting in an optimized JAC-2 material with a high yield (≈24%) and specific surface area (≈2600 m2 g-1). Furthermore, an innovative in situ synthesis approach is employed to synthesize hybrid nanocomposites (NiCoLDH-1@JAC-2) by integrating JAC nanosheets with nickel-cobalt-layered double hydroxide nanoflowers (NiCoLDH). These nanocomposites serve as positive electrode materials and JAC-2 as the negative electrode material in all-solid-state asymmetric hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs), exhibiting remarkable performance metrics. The HSCs achieve a specific capacitance of 750 F g-1, a specific capacity of 209 mAh g-1 (at 0.5 A g-1), and an energy density of 100 Wh kg-1 (at 250 W kg-1) using PVA/KOH solid electrolyte, while maintaining outstanding cyclic stability. Importantly, a density functional theory framework is utilized to validate the experimental findings, underscoring the potential of this novel approach for enhancing HSC performance and enabling the large-scale production of transition metal-based layered double hydroxides.

Understanding the Behavior of Supercapacitor Materials via Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy: A Review

Energy harvesting and energy storage are two critical aspects of supporting the energy transition and sustainability. Many studies have been conducted to achieve excellent performance devices for these two purposes. As energy-storing devices, supercapacitors (SCs) have tremendous potential to be applied in several sectors. Some electrochemical characterizations define the performance of SCs. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is one of the most powerful analyses to determine the performance of SCs. Some parameters obtained from this analysis include bulk resistance, charge-transfer resistance, total resistance, specific capacitance, response frequency, and response time. This work provides a holistic and comprehensive review of utilizing EIS for SC characterization. Overall, researchers can benefit from this review by gaining a comprehensive understanding of the utilization of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for characterizing supercapacitors (SCs), enabling them to enhance SC performance and contribute to the advancement of energy harvesting and storage technologies.

Transforming Waste into Wealth: Advanced Carbon-Based Electrodes Derived from Refinery and Coal By-Products for Next-Generation Energy Storage

This comprehensive review addresses the need for sustainable and efficient energy storage technologies against escalating global energy demand and environmental concerns. It explores the innovative utilization of waste materials from oil refineries and coal processing industries as precursors for carbon-based electrodes in next-generation energy storage systems, including batteries and supercapacitors. These waste-derived carbon materials, such as semi-coke, coal gasification fine ash, coal tar pitch, petroleum coke, and petroleum vacuum residue, offer a promising alternative to conventional electrode materials. They present an optimal balance of high carbon content and enhanced electrochemical properties while promoting environmental sustainability through effectively repurposing waste materials from coal and hydrocarbon industries. This review systematically examines recent advancements in fabricating and applying waste-derived carbon-based electrodes. It delves into the methodologies for converting industrial by-products into high-quality carbon electrodes, with a particular emphasis on carbonization and activation processes tailored to enhance the electrochemical performance of the derived materials. Key findings indicate that while higher carbonization temperatures may impede the development of a porous structure, using KOH as an activating agent has proven effective in developing mesoporous structures conducive to ion transport and storage. Moreover, incorporating heteroatom doping (with elements such as sulfur, potassium, and nitrogen) has shown promise in enhancing surface interactions and facilitating the diffusion process through increased availability of active sites, thereby demonstrating the potential for improved storage capabilities. Advancements in Olive-derived Carbon: Preparation Methods and Sustainable Applications

In the realm of material science, carbon materials, especially olive-derived carbon (ODC), have become vital due to their sustainability and diverse properties. This review examines the sustainable extraction and use of ODC, a carbohydrate-rich by-product of olive biomass. We focus on innovative preparation techniques like pyrolysis, which are crucial forenhancing ODC's microstructure and surface properties. Variables such as activating agents, impregnation ratios, and pyrolysis conditions significantly influence these properties. Micro and Nanoporous Membrane Platforms for Carbon Neutrality: Membrane Gas Separation Prospects

Recently, carbon neutrality has been promoted as a potentially practical solution to global CO2 emissions and increasing energy-consumption challenges. Many attempts have been made to remove CO2 from the environment to address climate change and rising sea levels owing to anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Herein, membrane technology is proposed as a suitable solution for carbon neutrality. This review aims to comprehensively evaluate the currently available scientific research on membranes for carbon capture, focusing on innovative microporous material membranes used for CO2 separation and considering their material, chemical, and physical characteristics and permeability factors. Membranes from such materials comprise metal-organic frameworks, zeolites, silica, porous organic frameworks, and microporous polymers. The critical obstacles related to membrane design, growth, and CO2 capture and usage processes are summarized to establish novel membranes and strategies and accelerate their scaleup.

Facile Transfer Hydrogenation of N-Heteroarenes and Nitroarenes Using Magnetically Recoverable Pd@SPIONs Catalyst

Catalysts with active, selective, and reusable features are desirable for sustainable development. The present investigation involved the synthesis and characterization of bear-surfaced ultrasmall Pd particles (<1 nm) loaded onto the surface of magnetic nanoparticles (8-10 nm). The amount of Pd loading onto the surface of magnetite is recorded as 2.8 wt %. The characterization process covered the utilization of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods. The Pd@Fe3O4 catalyst has shown remarkable efficacy in the hydrogenation of quinoline, resulting in the production of >99% N-ring hydrogenated (py-THQ) product. Additionally, the catalyst facilitated the conversion of nitroarenes into their corresponding aniline derivatives, where hydrogen was achieved by H2O molecules with the aid of tetrahydroxydiboron (THDB) as an equilibrium supportive at 80 °C in 1 h. The high efficiency of a transfer hydrogenation catalyst is closely related to the metal-support synergistic effect. The broader scope of functional group tolerance is evaluated. The potential mechanism underlying the hydrogenation process has been elucidated through the utilization of isotopic labeling investigations. The application of the heterocyclic compound hydrogenation reaction is extended to formulate the medicinally important tubular polymerization inhibitor drug synthesis. The investigation of the recyclability of Pd@Fe3O4 has been conducted.

Investigation of the linkage between TNF-alfa rs1800629 polymorphism and preeclampsia risk: A meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Preeclampsia is a serious medical condition that significantly affects expectant mothers. Growing research showed an inconsistent association between TNF-alfa rs1800629 polymorphism and preeclampsia. The current meta-analysis was aimed at examining the potential impact of rs1800629 variant on preeclampsia.

METHODS

The Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and other databases were searched extensively to locate and select articles up to October 30, 2023. The PRISMA 2020 recommendations were followed to perform this study. Data analysis was done by using Comprehensive Meta analysis (v 3).

RESULTS

We have included 32 articles containing 35 studies with 3,883 patients and 5,821 controls for qualitative and quantitative data analysis. We found a strong relationship between rs1800629 variant with the increased preeclampsia risk in co-dominant model 1 (OR = 1.33, p = 0.019), co-dominant model 2 (OR = 1.43, p = 0.014), dominant model (OR = 1.25, p = 0.044), over-dominant model (OR = 1.31, p = 0.021), and allelic model (OR = 1.24, p = 0.018). This study also revealed a significantly higher risk among the Asian population in the dominant (OR = 2.31, p = 0.036) and allelic model (OR = 2.02, p = 0.028). For the Caucasian population, an increased association between the rs1800629 variant and preeclampsia risk was reported in co-dominant model 1 (OR = 1.37, p = 0.011), co-dominant model 2 (OR = 1.77, p = 0.007), dominant model (OR = 1.32, p = 0.030), recessive (OR = 1.50, p = 0.047), over-dominant (OR = 1.34, p = 0.009), and allelic model (OR = 1.32, p = 0.004). Though our study showed the protective link of the TNF-alfa polymorphism to the preeclampsia risk among the Black population, no significant outcomes were observed in any genetic models (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Overall, the present meta-analysis explored a consistent linkage of the TNF-alfa rs1800629 variant to the preeclampsia risk in different ethnic groups. Additional research is required to confirm the precise relationship between the rs1800629 variant and preeclampsia risk.

A comprehensive evaluation of the therapeutic potential of silibinin: a ray of hope in cancer treatment

Natural compounds hold promise in the search for cancer therapies due to their unique chemical structures and combinations that may effectively combat cancer while minimizing toxicity and side effects compared to conventional treatments. Silibinin, a natural lignan, has been found to possess strong anti-cancer activity against several types of human cancers based on emerging research. This study aims to provide an overview of the therapeutic potential of silibinin in the treatment and prevention of cancers. A comprehensive search was conducted using various internet databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect to identify relevant research papers. Silibinin has been shown to exhibit anticancer activity against several types of cancers, including liver, lungs, breast, prostate, colorectal, skin, and bladder cancers. Its multifaceted mechanisms of action contribute to its therapeutic effects. Silibinin exerts antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, anti-metastatic, and anti-angiogenic activities, making it a promising candidate for cancer therapy. One of the key mechanisms underlying the anticancer effects of silibinin is its ability to modulate multiple signaling pathways involved in cancer development and progression. It can inhibit the activation of various oncogenic pathways, including PI3K/Akt, NF-κB, Wnt/β-catenin, and MAPK pathways, thereby suppressing cancer cell proliferation, inducing cell cycle arrest, and promoting apoptosis. Silibinin possesses great potential as an effective treatment agent for cancer. The multifaceted mechanisms of action, favorable safety profile, and potential synergistic effects of silibinin with conventional therapies make it an attractive candidate for further investigation and development as a cancer treatment. However, more extensive clinical studies are necessary to fully establish the efficacy, optimal dosage, and long-term effects of silibinin in cancer treatment.

The linkage between IL-6 rs1800797 variant and breast cancer susceptibility in Bangladeshi women: A case-control study

Background and Aims

Breast cancer is one of the deadliest diseases affecting women in Bangladesh, and its prevalence is increasing year by year. Although several IL-6 single nucleotide polymorphisms have been implicated in BC susceptibility and prognosis in various studies, no research has been done to investigate the relationship between breast cancer and IL-6 in Bangladeshi women. This investigation aimed to explore the linkage between the rs1800797 variant of IL-6 and the susceptibility to breast carcinoma among women in Bangladesh.

Methods

The IL-6 rs1800797 variant was genotyped in 218 subjects (110 cases and 108 controls) using the tetra-primer ARMS-PCR method. The statistical analysis was applied utilizing the SPSS software version 24.0. UALCAN database was used for IL-6 mRNA analysis, and genotype-based gene expression was retrieved from GTEx Portal.

Results

This study found a significant link between IL-6 rs1800797 variants and increased chance of breast cancer across different genetic inheritance models, including additive model 1 (AG vs. GG: OR = 2.16, p = 0.035); dominant model (AG + AA vs. GG: OR = 2.26, p < 0.05); overdominant model (AG vs. GG + AA: OR = 2.08, p < 0.05); and allelic model (A vs. G: OR = 2.15, p < 0.05). However, an insignificant association of breast cancer was found in both additive model 2 (AA vs. GG: OR = 2.91, p > 0.05) and the recessive model (AA vs. GG + AG: OR = 2.52, p > 0.05). Under the analysis of the probability of false positive reports, no significant values were found in different models when the OR was 1.5, and the prior probability was 0.25.

Conclusions

A significant relationship was found between the IL-6 rs1800797 genetic variant and the risk of breast cancer. However, the findings of the study should be further investigated with a larger sample size to validate the correlation.

Vanadium-Based Cathodic Materials of Aqueous Zn-Ion Battery for Superior-Performance with Prolonged-Life Cycle

Aqueous Zn-ion battery systems (AZIBs) have emerged as the most dependable solution, as demonstrated by successful systematic growth over the past few years. Cost effectivity, high performance and power density with prolonged life cycle are some major reason of the recent progress in AZIBs. Development of vanadium-based cathodic materials for AZIBs has appeared widely. This review contains a brief display of the basic facts and history of AZIBs. An insight section on zinc storage mechanism ramifications is given. A detailed discussion is conducted on features of high-performance and long life-time cathodes. Such features include design, modifications, electrochemical and cyclic performance, along with stability and zinc storage pathway of vanadium based cathodes from 2018 to 2022. Finally, this review outlines obstacles and opportunities with encouragement for gathering a strong conviction for future advancement in vanadium-based cathodes for AZIBs.
