Breakthrough in High-Efficiency Photocatalytic Degradation of Acebutolol by Advanced Binary CeO2-MnO2 Oxide System

The sustainable catalytic efficacy of transition metal oxides (TMO) and rare earth element-based oxides positions them as pivotal materials for effectively treating contaminated wastewater. This study successfully synthesized a series of Ce@MnO2 photocatalysts using a straightforward hydrothermal method. These photocatalysts were thoroughly characterized for their optical properties, structural morphology, and phase purity. Among the synthesized materials, the Ce@MnO2 (40:60) exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Acebutolol (ACB), achieving a remarkable degradation efficiency of 92.71% within 90 min under visible light irradiation. This superior performance is attributed to the increased presence of active species and the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. Additionally, the photocatalytic reaction mechanism was elucidated, highlighting the catalyst's surface charge properties which significantly enhanced performance in a solution with pH 8. The outstanding photo-response in the visible spectrum renders this method not only cost-effective but also environmentally benign, presenting a promising approach for large-scale water purification.

A converged ubiquitin-proteasome pathway for the degradation of TOC and TOM tail-anchored receptors

In plants, thousands of nucleus-encoded proteins translated in the cytosol are sorted to chloroplasts and mitochondria by binding to specific receptors of the TOC (translocon on the outer chloroplast membrane) and the TOM (translocon on the outer mitochondrial membrane) complexes for import into those organelles. The degradation pathways for these receptors are unclear. Here, we discovered a converged ubiquitin-proteasome pathway for the degradation of Arabidopsis thaliana TOC and TOM tail-anchored receptors. The receptors are ubiquitinated by E3 ligase(s) and pulled from the outer membranes by the AAA+ adenosine triphosphatase CDC48, after which a previously uncharacterized cytosolic protein, transmembrane domain (TMD)-binding protein for tail-anchored outer membrane proteins (TTOP), binds to the exposed TMDs at the C termini of the receptors and CDC48, and delivers these complexes to the 26S proteasome.

Cleavage of the pseudoprotease iRhom2 by the signal peptidase complex reveals an ER-to-nucleus signaling pathway

iRhoms are pseudoprotease members of the rhomboid-like superfamily and are cardinal regulators of inflammatory and growth factor signaling; they function primarily by recognizing transmembrane domains of their clients. Here, we report a mechanistically distinct nuclear function of iRhoms, showing that both human and mouse iRhom2 are non-canonical substrates of signal peptidase complex (SPC), the protease that removes signal peptides from secreted proteins. Cleavage of iRhom2 generates an N-terminal fragment that enters the nucleus and modifies the transcriptome, in part by binding C-terminal binding proteins (CtBPs). The biological significance of nuclear iRhom2 is indicated by elevated levels in skin biopsies of patients with psoriasis, tylosis with oesophageal cancer (TOC), and non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma (NEPPK); increased iRhom2 cleavage in a keratinocyte model of psoriasis; and nuclear iRhom2 promoting proliferation of keratinocytes. Overall, this work identifies an unexpected SPC-dependent ER-to-nucleus signaling pathway and demonstrates that iRhoms can mediate nuclear signaling.

UV/persulfate processes for the removal of total organic carbon from coagulation-treated industrial wastewaters

Sulfate radical-based oxidation processes were investigated to understand the relationship between persulfate (PS) consumption and total organic carbon (TOC) removal from industrial wastewater under various PS concentrations. First, the degradation and mineralization of Bisphenol A (BPA) (initial concentration: 11 mg/L) were investigated in ultraviolet (UV)/PS systems. Complete degradation was achieved within 30 min of UV irradiation, and 41%-72% TOC removal was achieved at PS concentrations of 200 and 400 mg/L. The consumed concentration of S2O82- and generated concentration of SO42- increased gradually to similar levels. The ratio of the PS consumption to TOC removal based on the mass concentration (mg/L) was 14.5 and 23.2 at 180 min for 200 and 400 mg/L of S2O82-, respectively. Three types of coagulation-treated industrial wastewater from metal-processing, food-processing, and adhesive-producing plants were obtained, and TOC removal was analyzed using the same UV/PS systems (initial TOC concentration: 100 mg/L). The TOC removal rates ranged from 16.9% to 94.4% after 180 min of UV irradiation at PS concentrations of 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 mg S2O82-/L. Despite the higher TOC removal at higher PS concentrations, the PS activation efficiency decreased significantly as the PS concentration increased. Only approximately 30%-40% activation efficiency was achieved at a PS concentration of 8,000 mg/L. In this study, the ratio of PS consumption to TOC removal ranged from 20.6 to 43.9.

Treatment of salt from hides curing stage by electrocoagulation for use in the pickling stage of the tanning industry

The raw materials for the tanning industry, namely hides and skins, are preserved (curing stage) and carried with common salt, i.e., sodium chloride (NaCl). Proceeding to conversion into leather, pickling is a key stage of the tannery process, which entails high demand of water and salt. In this work, the salt-derived brine (SdB) generated from the curing of hides was treated by iron-driven electrocoagulation (EC), aiming at its later application in the pickling stage of the tanning industry, promoting a transition to zero waste emission policy. Focusing on reducing the brine's total organic carbon (TOC), central composite rotational design and response surface methodology were adopted to study the effect of electrolysis time (6.2-14.2 min) and current density (74-431 A·m-2) on the treatment of the SdB (≅ 7.5 % wt. NaCl). The quality of the treated brines was then assessed in pickling trials and compared with virgin brine. 68-83 % removal of TOC from the SdB were achieved under electrolysis time ranging 6.2-14.2 min and current density ranging 126-252 A·m-2. Under these operating ranges the quality of the wet-blue leathers was guaranteed. Lowest power consumption (0.44 kWh·m-3) was achieved under electrolysis time of 6 min and current density of 126 A·m-2, yielding 68 % removal of TOC. Moreover, the shrinkage temperature of the hides was improved with treated brine (103.5 °C-110.5 °C) compared to virgin brine (103.0 °C). The present study provides strong evidence that contaminated salt from the curing stage can be valorised within the tanning industry through electrocoagulation treatment and then used in another production stage, instead of being landfilled.

Influence of the Molar Activity of 203/212Pb-PSC-PEG2-TOC on Somatostatin Receptor Type 2-Binding and Cell Uptake

(1) Background: In neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), somatostatin receptor subtype 2 is highly expressed, which can be targeted by a radioactive ligand such as [177Lu]Lu-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-N,N',N″,N‴,-tetraacetic acid-[Tyr3,Thr8]-octreotide (177Lu-DOTA-TOC) and, more recently, by a lead specific chelator (PSC) containing 203/212Pb-PSC-PEG2-TOC (PSC-TOC). The molar activity (AM) can play a crucial role in tumor uptake, especially in receptor-mediated uptake, such as in NETs. Therefore, an investigation of the influence of different molar activities of 203/212Pb-PSC-TOC on cell uptake was investigated. (2) Methods: Optimized radiolabeling of 203/212Pb-PSC-TOC was performed with 50 µg of precursor in a NaAc/AcOH buffer at pH 5.3-5.5 within 15-45 min at 95° C. Cell uptake was studied in AR42 J, HEK293 sst2, and ZR75-1 cells. (3) Results: 203/212Pb-PSC-TOC was radiolabeled with high radiochemical purity >95% and high radiochemical yield >95%, with AM ranging from 0.2 to 61.6 MBq/nmol. The cell uptake of 203Pb-PSC-TOC (AM = 38 MBq/nmol) was highest in AR42 J (17.9%), moderate in HEK293 sstr (9.1%) and lowest in ZR75-1 (0.6%). Cell uptake increased with the level of AM. (4) Conclusions: A moderate AM of 15-40 MBq/nmol showed the highest cell uptake. No uptake limitation was found in the first 24-48 h. Further escalation experiments with even higher AM should be performed in the future. It was shown that AM plays an important role because of its direct dependence on the cellular uptake levels, possibly due to less receptor saturation with non-radioactive ligands at higher AM.

Sediment Bacteria in the Alpine Lake Sayram: Vertical Patterns in Community Composition

Bacterial communities inhabiting alpine lakes are essential to our understanding of ecosystem processes in a changing climate, but little has been reported about the vertical patterns of sediment bacterial communities in alpine lakes. To address this knowledge gap, we collected the 100 cm long sediment core from the center of Lake Sayram, the largest alpine lake in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous area, China, and used 16S rRNA gene-targeted amplicon sequencing to examine the bacterial populations. The results showed that bacterial diversity, as estimated by the Shannon index, was highest at the surface (6.9849 at 0-4 cm) and gradually decreased with depth up to 3.9983 at 68-72 cm, and then increased to 5.0927 at 96-100 cm. A total of 56 different phyla and 1204 distinct genera were observed in the sediment core of Lake Sayram. The bacterial community structure in the sediment samples from the various layers was dissimilar. The most abundant phyla in alpine Lake Sayram were Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Planctomycetes, accounting for 73%, 6%, and 4% of the total reads, respectively; the most abundant genera were Acinetobacter, Hydrogenophaga, and Pseudomonas, accounting for 18%, 12%, and 8% of the total reads, respectively. Furthermore, the relative abundance of Acinetobacter increased with sediment depth, while the relative abundance of Hydrogenophaga and Pseudomonas decreased with sediment depth. Our findings indicated that the nitrate-reducing bacteria (Acinetobacter, Hydrogenophaga, and Pseudomonas) may be prevalent in the sediment core of Lake Sayram. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that carbonate and total organic carbon (TOC) may be the main environmental factors affecting the vertical patterns of bacterial community composition (BCC) in the sediment of Lake Sayram. This work significantly contributes to our understanding of the BCC of sediments from alpine lakes in arid and semiarid regions.

Amyloplast sedimentation repolarizes LAZYs to achieve gravity sensing in plants

Gravity controls directional growth of plants, and the classical starch-statolith hypothesis proposed more than a century ago postulates that amyloplast sedimentation in specialized cells initiates gravity sensing, but the molecular mechanism remains uncharacterized. The LAZY proteins are known as key regulators of gravitropism, and lazy mutants show striking gravitropic defects. Here, we report that gravistimulation by reorientation triggers mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling-mediated phosphorylation of Arabidopsis LAZY proteins basally polarized in root columella cells. Phosphorylation of LAZY increases its interaction with several translocons at the outer envelope membrane of chloroplasts (TOC) proteins on the surface of amyloplasts, facilitating enrichment of LAZY proteins on amyloplasts. Amyloplast sedimentation subsequently guides LAZY to relocate to the new lower side of the plasma membrane in columella cells, where LAZY induces asymmetrical auxin distribution and root differential growth. Together, this study provides a molecular interpretation for the starch-statolith hypothesis: the organelle-movement-triggered molecular polarity formation.

Relationships between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and physical-chemical parameters in aqueous landfill samples

Variable chemistries of liquids from landfills can potentially impact levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The objective of the current study was to evaluate relationships between physical-chemical properties (bulk measurements, oxygen demand components, and metals) and PFAS concentrations in different types of aqueous landfill samples. Aqueous landfill samples were collected from 39 landfill facilities in Florida, United States. These samples included leachates from landfills that receive different waste types, such as municipal solid waste incineration ash (MSWA), construction and demolition debris (C&D), and municipal solid waste (MSW). Additional aqueous landfill samples were sourced from treated landfill leachate, gas condensate, stormwater, and groundwater from within and near the landfill boundaries. Results showed significant correlations (p < 0.05) between ∑26PFAS and alkalinity (rs = 0.83), total organic carbon (TOC) (rs = 0.84), and ammonia (rs = 0.79) for all leachate types. Other physical-chemical parameters that were significantly correlated (rs > 0.60, p < 0.05) with PFAS included specific conductivity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and to a lesser extent, total dissolved solids (TDS) and total solids (TS). For gas condensates, PFAS was significantly correlated with TOC. Stormwater and groundwater, within and near the landfill boundaries, had considerably lower levels of PFAS and had a minimal correlation between PFAS and physical-chemical parameters. Although PFAS concentrations and physical-chemical parameters and their correlations varied between different types of aqueous landfill samples, results suggest that physical-chemical properties can be useful indicators of relative PFAS concentrations within a leachate type. More research is needed to validate the mechanisms that relate physical-chemical parameters to PFAS concentrations in landfill leachates.

Long-term trend data for PFAS in soils from German ecosystems, including TOP assay

In this study, soil top layers from the German Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB) covering a period from 2002 to 2018 and 11 sampling sites representing four ecosystem types were analysed for 24 PFAS (11 PFCA, 7 PFSA, and 6 precursors), including the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay. Median ΣPFAS levels before and after TOP assay ranged from 0.31 to 19.7 μg/kg dry weight (dw) and 0.32 to 20.4 μg/kg dw, respectively. The most frequently measured PFAS above LOQ were PFOS and PFOA, which were present at concentrations above 0.1 μg/kg dw in each sample. Both accounted, on average, for half to two-thirds of the total identified PFAS load at most sites. The investigated samples from the near-natural and forestry ecosystem types each had significantly higher PFAS levels than those from the urban-industrial ecosystem type, while samples from the agricultural ecosystem type did not differ distinctly from the others. Increases of median ΣPFAS levels after TOP assay ranged up to slightly >20 %, indicating that precursor compounds do not play a major role in the substance spectrum of German ESB soil samples from different ecosystem types. Total organic carbon (TOC) content in analysed samples ranged from about 1 % in sandy soil to >40 % in litter layer and showed a strong positive correlation with PFAS concentrations. It is therefore highly recommended that TOC content is reported along with PFAS levels in soils. PFAS trend analysis for nine sampling sites before and after TOP assay showed that concentration levels at most sites have remained more or less stable for the sampled period of almost two decades. The constant PFAS levels in soil samples indicate that PFOS and PFOA regulations have not yet had a positive effect on the exposure situation in this environmental compartment.

Occurrence of halogenated methanesulfonic acids in water and sediment from the Hangzhou Bay, China

Halogenated methanesulfonic acids (HMSAs) are an important new class of organic compounds as they were universal in the water cycle and drinking water sources. However, no study has investigated the presence of HMSAs in surface water and sediment from China. The present study reports the occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of seven HMSAs in water and sediment samples from Hangzhou Bay, China. Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMSA) was the main contributor to the concentrations of HMSAs in water and sediment samples from spring, summer, autumn and winter which were 30.8-541 ng/L, n. d.-86.6 ng/L, 4.22-70.9 ng/L and 8.86-192 ng/L, separately, while in sediment samples were n. d.-11.1 ng/g, n. d.-12.9 ng/g, n. d.-22.5 ng/g, n. d.-4.60 ng/g, respectively. The levels of HMSAs in water from winter and spring were higher than those in summer and autumn, and the concentrations of the target HMSAs in water presents a seasonal pattern affected by the temperature, the precipitation and river flow variations. Nevertheless, the levels of HMSAs in sediment were highest in the area near the industrial area and the confluences of rivers. Correlation analysis revealed that the concentrations of TFMSA were significantly positively correlated with total organic carbon (TOC) in water samples. Although TFMSA is regarded as low toxic based on the EC₅₀ value of acute toxicity, the potential risks to aquatic ecology should be paid more attention due to its high concentrations in the aquatic system and the environmental persistency.

Total organic carbon concentrations in clastic cave sediments from Butler Cave, Virginia, USA: implications for contaminant fate and transport

Clastic cave deposits are representative of sediments throughout the karst aquifer and thus are an abundant and accessible resource through which to study the chemistry of karst aquifer. Clastic cave sediments are attributed to depositional facies based on cave location, sorting, and particle size. These facies settings may influence different chemical parameters of the sediments, like concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC). The TOC concentrations in clastic cave sediments have not been well constrained nor has the role of clastic sediments in contaminant fate and transport through karst systems been well described. In this study, particle size, TOC, and total nitrogen were measured in sediments representing different facies in Butler Cave, Virginia, USA. TOC concentrations ranged from 0.08 - 0.87 weight percent and C:N molar ratio ranged from 3 - 15, indicating a possible terrestrial source of organic carbon in these sediments. The diamicton facies was sandier and but had similar TOC concentrations compared to the channel facies. TOC concentrations measured in Butler Cave were within the same range as those observed in above water, eogenetic clastic cave sediments from two caves in Puerto Rico. Estimated retardation factors calculated based on the TOC concentrations in the Butler Cave sediments indicate the range of TOC in this cave could be responsible for 39 - 987% increase in retardation of selected contaminants. This study highlights the importance of measuring the ranges of TOC in clastic cave sediments across different facies and their role in contaminant fate and transport.

[Combination of ketamine and esketamine with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder]

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), characterized by the combination of obsession and compulsion, is a clinical and therapeutic challenge. Many patients with OCD do not respond to first-line treatments such as serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and exposure and response prevention psychotherapy (ERP). For these resistant patients, some preliminary studies have shown that ketamine, a non-selective glutamatergic NMDA receptors antagonist, could improve the obsessive symptoms. A number of these studies have also suggested that the combination of ketamine with ERP psychotherapy may jointly potentiate the effectiveness of ketamine and ERP. In this paper, we present the existing data on the combined use of ketamine with ERP psychotherapy for OCD. We suggest that modulation of NMDA receptor activity and glutamatergic signaling by ketamine may promote the therapeutic mechanisms involved in ERP such as fear extinction and brain plasticity mechanisms. Finally, we propose a ketamine-augmented ERP psychotherapy (KAP-ERP) protocol in OCD, and we present the limitations associated with its application in clinical practice.

Spatial predictors and temporal forecast of total organic carbon levels in boreal lakes

Browning of Fennoscandian boreal lakes is raising concerns for negative ecosystem impacts as well as reduced drinking water quality. Declined sulfur deposition and warmer climate, along with afforestation, other climate impacts and less outfield grazing, have resulted in increased fluxes of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) from catchments to freshwater, and subsequently to coastal waters. This study assesses the major governing factors for increased TOC levels among several catchment characteristics in almost 5000 Fennoscandian lakes and catchments. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a proxy for plant biomass, and the proportions of peatland in the catchment, along with surface runoff intensity and nitrogen deposition loading, were identified as the main spatial predictors for lake TOC concentrations. A multiple linear model, based on these explanatory variables, was used to simulate future TOC concentration in surface runoff from coastal drainage basins in 2050 and 2100, using the forecasts of climatic variables in two of the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSP): 1-2.6 (+2 °C) and 3-7.0 (+4,5 °C). These scenarios yield contrasting effects. SSP 1-2.6 predicts an overall decrease of TOC export to coastal waters, while SSP 3-7.0 in contrast leads to an increase in TOC export.

Degradation of Phenol via an Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) with Immobilized Commercial Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Photocatalysts

Four commercial titanium dioxide (TiO₂) photocatalysts, namely P25, P90, PC105, and PC500, were immobilized onto steel plates using a sol-gel binder and investigated for phenol degradation under 365 nm UV-LED irradiation. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and total organic carbon (TOC) analyses were performed to study the impact of three types of oxygen sources (air, dispersed synthetic air, and hydrogen peroxide) on the photocatalytic performance. The photocatalyst films were stable and there were significant differences in their performance. The best result was obtained with the P90/UV/H₂O₂ system with 100% degradation and about 70% mineralization within 3 h of irradiation. The operating conditions varied, showing that water quality is crucial for the performance. A wastewater treatment plant was developed based on the lab-scale results and water treatment costs were estimated for two cases of irradiation: UV-LED (about 600 EUR/m³) and sunlight (about 60 EUR/m³). The data show the high potential of immobilized photocatalysts for pollutant degradation under advanced oxidation process (AOP) conditions, but there is still a need for optimization to further reduce treatment costs.

Artificial intelligence-aided preparation of perovskite SrFexZr1-xO3-δ catalysts for ozonation degradation of organic pollutant concentrated water after membrane treatment

Membrane technology has been widely used to treat wastewater from a variety of industries, but it also results in a large amount of concentrated wastewater containing organic pollutants after membrane treatment, which is challenging to decompose. Here in this work, a series of perovskite SrFe_xZr_1-xO_3-δ catalysts were prepared via a modified co-precipitation method and evaluated for catalytic ozone oxidative degradation of m-cresol. An artificial neural intelligence networks (ANN) model was employed to train the experimental data to optimize the preparation parameters of catalysts, with SrFe_0.13Zr_0.87O_3-δ being the optimal catalysts. The resultant catalysts before and after reduction were then thoroughly characterized and tested for m-cresol degradation. It was found that the co-doping of Fe and Zr at the B-site and the improvement of oxygen vacancies and oxygen active species by reduction dramatically increased TOC removal rates up to 5 times compared with ozone alone, with the conversion rate of m-cresol reaching 100%. We also proposed a possible mechanism for m-cresol degradation via investigating the intermediates using GC-MS, and confirmed the good versatility of the reduced SrFe_0.13Zr_0.87O_3-δ catalyst to remove other common organic pollutants in concentrated wastewater. This work demonstrates new prospects for the use of perovskite materials in wastewater treatment.

Biochar-blended manure modified by polyacrylamide to reduce soil colloidal phosphorus leaching loss

Combined application of biochar and organic fertilizer improves soil structure and crop yield but may lead to increased loss of phosphorus (P). To reduce the P loss risk in this case, rice straw biochar (BC) and sheep manure (SM) were modified using polyacrylamide (PAM). The effects of using organic amendments (BC, SM, and PAM-modified organic mixtures) and no amendments (CK) on soil total and colloidal P leaching loss from paddy soils were evaluated through soil column leaching experiments. The soil leachate volume was increased by 8.91% with BC treatment and reduced by 15.3% with SM treatment. The total P leaching loss (973.9 μg kg^-1) from the BC-treated soil was higher than that from other treatments (541.4-963.5 μg kg^-1). However, there was much more colloidal P loss (480.0 μg kg^-1) from SM treatment. The optimal conditions for the preparation of BC and SM modified using polyacrylamide (PSB) for reducing P leaching loss were SM/BC = 4:1, 1% PAM, and 100 °C. Molybdate-unreactive P accounts for 58.61-86.89% of the colloidal P in the soil leachate with organic amendments. PSB reduced colloidal P loss (particularly in 10-220 nm range) by ~ 50% compared with BC and SM treatments. The colloidal P concentration in the leaching solutions was significantly correlated with TOC and susceptible to Fe and Al concentrations. Using PAM-modified mixture instead of manure and biochar as a soil amendment can effectively control P leaching from fields.

Synthesis of Fe-TiO2@Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles as a recyclable sonocatalyst for the degradation of 2, 4-dichlorophenol

2, 4-Dichlorophenol is a type of chlorophenol that, even at low concentrations, causes adverse effects such as anemia, coma, weakening of the nervous system, and cancer in humans and other organisms. Therefore, the aim of this study was to synthesize the Fe-TiO₂@Fe₃O₄ sonocatalyst and to assess the removal efficiency of 2, 4-dichlorophenol using this sonocatalyst. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), value-stream mapping (VSM), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) analyses were performed for characterizing the synthesized nanoparticles. The effect of different factors, such as pH (3-9), initial concentration 2, 4-dichlorophenol (20-80 mg/L), and level of nanoparticles (200-600 mg/L) at different time points (15-90 min), was assessed on sonocatalytic removal of 2, 4-dichlorophenol, and then the reaction kinetics, process mechanism, and stability of the synthesized nanoparticles were determined under optimal conditions. The highest removal efficiency of 2, 4-dichlorophenol and constant reaction rate was obtained at pH of 5, the initial concentration of 20 mg/L, and the nanoparticles dose of 400 mg/L under ultrasound with a frequency of 35 kHz following the reaction time of 90 min. The maximum mineralization efficiency (total organic carbon TOC) under optimal conditions was 81%. Analysis of the degradation kinetics indicated that the 2, 4-dichlorophenol degradation can follow a first-order reaction. The stability of the synthesized sonocatalyst decreased by 91% after 5 re-uses. This study confirmed the efficiency of the Fe-TiO₂@Fe₃O₄ sonocatalytic process in the degradation and mineralization of 2, 4-dichlorophenol.

Bacterial community composition of the sediment in Sayram Lake, an alpine lake in the arid northwest of China

Sediment bacterial communities play a critical role in biogeochemical cycling in alpine lake ecosystems. However, little is known about the sediment microbial communities in these lakes. In this study, the bacterial community composition (BCC) and their relationships with environmental factors of the sediment in Sayram Lake, the largest alpine and cold-water inland lake, China was analyzed using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. In total, we obtained 618,271 high quality sequences. The results showed that the bacterial communities with 30 phyla and 546 genera, were spread out among the 5 furface sediment samples, respectively. The communities were dominated by Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes, Gemmatimonadetes, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia and Bacteroidetes, accounting for 48.15 ± 8.10%, 11.23 ± 3.10%, 8.42 ± 2.15%, 8.37 ± 2.26%, 7.40 ± 3.05%, 5.62 ± 1.25%, 4.18 ± 2.12% and 2.24 ± 1.10% of the total reads, respectively. At the genus level, the communities were dominated by Aquabacterium, Pseudomonas, Woeseia, MND1, Ignavibacterium and Truepera, accounting for 7.89% ± 8.24%, 2.32% ± 1.05%, 2.14% ± 0.94%, 2% ± 1.22%, 0.94% ± 0.14% and 0.80% ± 0.14% of the total reads, respectively. Statistical analyses showed the similarity of the sediment bacterial communities at our field sites was considerably low, far below 35%, and total organic carbon (TOC) was the dominant environmental factor affecting the spatial changes of BCC in the sediment. Thus, this study greatly improving our understanding of the microbial ecology of alpine lake in the arid and semi-arid ecosystems today so seriously threatened.

Distribution, risk assessment, and source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using positive matrix factorization (PMF) in urban soils of East India

This study investigated 16 United States environmental protection agency priority PAHs profiles and their sources in 40 urban soils collected from two industrialised cities, Jamshedpur and Bokaro, in east India and assessed their health risk to humans. The results showed the predominance of high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs (4-5 rings). The total PAHs concentration in surface soils ranged from 2223 to 11,266 ng/g and 729 to 5359 ng/g (dw), respectively, for Jamshedpur and Bokaro. Higher concentrations of PAHs were recorded at the selected industrial areas and heavy traffic zones of both cities. In JSR city 4-ring PAHs contributed 43% of total PAHs trailed by 5-ring PAHs 27.2%. Similarly, in BKR city 4-ring PAHs contributed 34% of the total PAHs, followed by 3-ring PAHs 28.9% and 5-ring PAHs 22.9%. Total organic carbon in surface soils exhibited moderate correlation with the low molecular weight (ΣLMW) PAHs (R² = 0.69) and a comparatively strong correlation with the ΣHMW PAHs (R² = 0.89), suggesting strong adsorption of HMW PAHs to urban soils. The Diagnostic and PMF modelling analysis indicated that the major sources of PAHs contamination in soils were petroleum combustion, vehicular emissions, biomass, and coal combustion. The health risk assessment shows that the cumulative probability of carcinogenic risks was under the acceptable limits of 10^-4 to 10^-6. At some sampling areas in both cities, the maximum value of total exposure cancer risk slightly exceeded the acceptable limits indicating some carcinogenic risk for adults.

Effect of sorption properties on the content, ecotoxicity, and bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in bottom sediments

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) tend to accumulate in the sediment due to their high hydrophobicity. Despite PAHs have been the subject of several reviews, PAH sorption processes in bottom sediments has not been comprehensively discucorrelation coefficients between sorption parameters and contessed. Understanding the dependencies governing PAH sorption processes will allow to predict, monitor, and mitigate the ecological effects of PAH contamination and the associated risks to humans or wildlife. The objectives of the study were to assess the relationship between the sorption properties and the content of PAHs in bottom sediments and mussels. The PAH profile was dominated by higher-molecular hydrocarbons, which accounted for 73% of the total concentration of PAHs. Potentiometric studies revealed the steric-based PAH sorption mechanism that strongly depended on the presence of negatively dissociating structures such as carboxylic or phenolic functional groups. Based on the changes in Q8 values, the size-exclusion effect was more likely for 5- and 6-ring compounds. Pores < 5 µm, which had the largest share in the specific surface area, were the preferred sites for PAH sequestration and stabilization in bottom sediments. The availability of PAHs was reduced in sediments with high organic matter content. The PAH bioaccumulation factor significantly decreased with increasing TOC content in sediments. Higher mortality and growth inhibition of H. incongruens were observed in samples with high and medium TOC contents than in those with low TOC content.

Storage and distribution of organic carbon in cave sediments: examples from two caves in the northern karst region of Puerto Rico

The clastic sediments that accumulate in cave settings can be an important storage reservoir for organic carbon. This study reports on grain size, total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations, and total organic carbon:total organic nitrogen (TOC:TON) ratios measured in sediments from two caves in Puerto Rico. El Tallonal Cave (TAL) is a small cave with a flowing stream; the sediments in TAL were collected from a deposit that is being actively eroded. Clara Cave (CAM) is an upper level of the Río Camuy Cave System; the sediments from CAM were newly deposited by an internal river that rose in response to Hurricane Maria. Sediments collected from both caves were poorly sorted and contained no apparent stratigraphic correlation. CAM sediments contained a larger range in TOC concentrations but were overall lower than TOC in the TAL sediments. In TAL, the TOC concentrations were higher in sediments collected from below the erosional terrace. TOC:TON ratios from sediments at both caves were highly variable, highlighting the heterogeneous deposition and storage of organic matter. Despite the observed variation, TOC concentrations in both cave systems could cause retardation of organic contaminants by up to two orders-of-magnitude, implying that deposited sediments influence the fate of organic contaminants in the groundwater; therefore, cave sediments could facilitate long term storage of organic carbon and associated contaminants.

Assessment of the global toxicity of marine sediments from the Dakar peninsula (Senegal, West Africa)

Marine pollution in West Africa is major threat particularly around coastal megacities. We assess the chemical and ecotoxicological quality of the marine sediments in various submerged sampling sites of Dakar. Analysis revealed that sediments were slightly basic in which fine and coarse sands predominated. High percentages of total organic carbon were found sometime above 6%. Higher levels of heavy metal were reported than in previous studies. Chromium and nickel were above the Probable Effect Concentration. Low trophic level appeared not affected by the overall toxicity, while medium trophic level was more affected. Indeed, the vast majority (91%) of sites studied revealed a net percentage of Magallana gigas embryolarval developmental abnormality over 20%. The assessment of the global toxicity of marine sediments from the Dakar sites Studied (n = 11) seemed, almost, as a whole, to be in a poor ecotoxicological state calling to take measures to improve the sanitary condition of this marine feature.

Effect of extrusion-spheronization granulation and manganese loading on catalytic ozonation of petrochemical wastewater

The petrochemical secondary effluent (PSE) is typical refractory wastewater derived from the petrochemical industries, which requires advanced treatment due to the strict environmental protection policies. Catalytic ozonation is one of the most widely used advanced oxidation technologies in wastewater treatment because of its high mineralization rate, in which the alumina-based catalyst usually plays an important role. Extrusion-spheronization is a promising technique for the preparation of alumina spheres because the synthesized alumina particles have high sphericity, high specific surface aera and narrow particle size distribution. In this paper, two kinds of alumina-based catalysts (catalyst A: manganese nitrate added after alumina granulation and catalyst B: manganese nitrate added into alumina powder before granulation) were prepared by the extrusion-spheronization method and used for PSE treatment by catalytic ozonation. The prepared alumina samples were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the wastewater samples were analyzed for Total organic carbon (TOC), UV₂₅₄ and fluorescence spectroscopy. Results showed that manganese was uniformly distributed in both catalysts, and the specific surface area of two catalysts was 318.36 m²/g and 354.95 m²/g, respectively. Catalytic ozonation experiments were repeated nine times with each catalyst under the same conditions. The TOC removal rates for catalysts A and B in the first run were 48.88% and 49.06%, respectively, then it dropped to 28.05% for catalyst A but remained 47.81% for catalyst B after using for nine times. This implied that the long-term performance of catalyst B would be more stable than catalyst A. Similar result were found in three-dimensional fluorescence analysis. UV₂₅₄ results indicated that the removal efficiency of aromatic and unsaturated substances by catalyst B was higher than catalyst A. A possible explanation is that the active component manganese oxide formed a catalyst skeleton in catalyst B, which makes it hard to dissolve. Assessment of leachable and persistent dissolved organic carbon in sludges and biosolids from municipal wastewater treatment plants

Environmental regulation of organic pollutants has not kept pace with the growth in the number and diversity of legacy and emerging organic substances now in use. Simpler and cheaper tools and methodologies are needed to quickly assess the organic pollutant risks in waste materials applied to land such as municipal wastewater treatment sludges and biosolids. This study attempts to provide these, using an approach that consists of chemical leaching and analysis of dissolved organic carbon and determination of its biodegradability by measuring persistent dissolved organic carbon. Primary and secondary sludges, dewatered sludge cake, and anaerobically and thermally treated biosolids obtained from various types of municipal wastewater treatment plants were used in the study. The study found little variability in the levels of dissolved organic carbon leached from primary sludges obtained from different municipal wastewater treatment plants but found significant differences for secondary sludges based on levels of nitrification at the municipal wastewater treatment plants. As predicted treated biosolids leached less dissolved organic carbon than untreated dry sludges but had relatively higher proportions of persistent or poorly biodegradable dissolved organic carbon. Across all tested sludges and biosolids persistent dissolved organic carbon ranged from 14 to 39%, with biosolids that have undergone anaerobic digestion and thermal treatment more likely to contain greater relative proportion of persistent dissolved organic carbon than untreated sludges. The approach presented in this study will be useful in assessing the effectiveness of current and widely employed sludge treatment methods in reducing persistent organic pollutants in biosolids disposed on land.
