Abstract
A surface sediment sample (<5cm) was collected from a sewage sludge contaminated site (118 degrees 02.711'E, 24 degrees 32.585'N) within western Xiamen Bay, China, in July 2005 for a sediment decontamination study. A series of laboratory-based experiments under various conditions were performed using chemical complexation reagents (e.g., H2C2O4, EDTA-2Na, etc.) and their combination in order to provide information for sediment remediation technology development. In this study, the results suggest that aeration and agitation of the sediment samples in distilled-deionized water (DDW) have either no or weak (<30%) effect on metal removal, whereas agitation, aeration and rotation of the samples in chemical complexation solutions yield much better metal removal efficiency (up to 90%). A low pH condition (e.g., pH<3) and a low solid to liquid ratio (e.g., S:L=1:50) could increase metal removal efficiency. The experimental results suggest that 0.20 M (NH4)2C2O4+0.025 M EDTA combination with solid:liquid ratio=1:50 and 0.50 M ammonium acetate (NH4Ac)+0.025 M EDTA combination with solid:liquid ratio=1:50 are the most effective methods for metal removal from the contaminated sediments. This research provides additional useful information for sediment metal remediation technology development.

Abstract
Surface sediments (0-5 cm) from 59 stations within the Yangtze River intertidal zone (YRIZ) were sampled for metal contamination analysis in April and August 2005. The concentrations ranged (in mg kg(-1) dry weight): Al, 40,803-97,213; Fe, 20,538-49,627; Cd, 0.12-0.75; Cr, 36.9-173; Cu, 6.87-49.7; Mn, 413-1,112; Ni, 17.6-48.0; Pb, 18.3-44.1; and Zn, 47.6-154; respectively. Among the 59 sampling stations, enrichment factors (EF) indicate enrichment of Cd (52 stations), Cr (54 stations), Cu (5 stations), Ni (26 stations), Pb (5 stations) and Zn (5 stations). Geoaccumulation indexes (I(geo)) also suggest individual metal contamination in localized areas. This study indicates that Cd, Cr and Ni enrichment in the YRIZ sediment is widespread whereas Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn enrichment is localized or nonexistent. Factor and cluster analyses indicate that Cd is associated with total organic carbon whereas Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn have a close association with Mn.

Abstract
Recent studies have detected mutations in the EDA gene, previously identified as causing X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED), in two families with X-linked non-syndromic hypodontia. Notably, all affected males in both families exhibited isolated oligodontia, while almost all female carriers showed a milder or normal phenotype. We hypothesized that the EDA gene could be responsible for sporadic non-syndromic oligodontia in affected males. In this study, we examined 15 unrelated males with non-syndromic oligodontia. Three novel EDA mutations (p.Ala259Glu, p. Arg289Cys, and p.Arg334His) were identified in four individuals (27%). A genetic defect in the EDA gene could result in non-syndromic oligodontia in affected males.

Abstract
Phytase and phytase gene from Aspergillus ficuum (A. ficuum) were used in this study. The results showed that
phytase activity reached the peak of 0.17 U/g after 4 d incubation in solid medium for A. ficuum; the optimum pH and
temperature of phytase were 2.5 and 50 oC, respectively. A 1.4-kb DNA containing the coding region of phytase gene was
isolated and inserted into the expression vectors of pIAβ8 and pGAPZαA, which were transformed into E. coli (Top 10).
The maximal phytase activities in the supernatant and cells were 2.31 and 9.04 U/ml for the E. coli with pIAβ8, 8.04 and
2.93 U/ml for the E. coli with pGAPZαA, respectively. It was concluded that the recombinant of pIAβ8-phytase could express
intracellular phytase, while the recombinant of pGAPZαA-phytase could express extracellular phytase. The molecular
weight of phytase protein was 54.61 kDa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have shown that preconditioning with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) can reduce ischemic and hemorrhagic brain injury. We investigated effects of HBO preconditioning on traumatic brain injury (TBI) at high altitude and examined the role of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in such protection. METHODS Rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: HBO preconditioning group (HBOP; n = 13), high-altitude group (HA; n = 13), and high-altitude sham operation group (HASO; n = 13). All groups were subjected to head trauma by weight-drop device, except for HASO group. HBOP rats received 5 sessions of HBO preconditioning (2.5 ATA, 100% oxygen, 1 h daily) and then were kept in hypobaric chamber at 0.6 ATA (to simulate pressure at 4000m altitude) for 3 days before operation. HA rats received control pretreatment (1 ATA, room air, 1 h daily), then followed the same procedures as HBOP group. HASO rats were subjected to skull opening only without brain injury. Twenty-four hours after TBI, 7 rats from each group were examined for neurological function and brain water content; 6 rats from each group were killed for analysis by H&E staining and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS Neurological outcome in HBOP group (0.71 +/- 0.49) was better than HA group (1.57 +/- 0.53; p < 0.05). Preconditioning with HBO significantly reduced percentage of brain water content (86.24 +/- 0.52 vs. 84.60 +/- 0.37; p < 0.01). Brain morphology and structure seen by light microscopy was diminished in HA group, while fewer pathological injuries occurred in HBOP group. Compared to HA group, pretreatment with HBO significantly reduced the number of MMP-9-positive cells (92.25 +/- 8.85 vs. 74.42 +/- 6.27; p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS HBO preconditioning attenuates TBI in rats at high altitude. Decline in MMP-9 expression may contribute to HBO preconditioning-induced protection of brain tissue against TBI.

Abstract
The generation of waste in urban regions over time is seen to impact the balance of anthropogenic and natural resources. Various national and international initiatives to manage urban solid waste are in place and has thus have evolved at present to form an assortment of different subcomponents involving environmental, administrative, regulatory, scientific, market, technology, and socio-economic factors, which has increasing bearing on the US due to its volume and nature of discards. This paper draws together the various aspects of municipal solid waste (MSW) management as it evolved, particularly in the American society through reviewing works and findings. In many parts of the country, waste management at present, primarily involves landfilling, incineration with and without energy recovery, recycling and composting. Legislation, nature of wastes and market trends continue to redefine management operations and its responsibilities and impacts. Complexities are added to it by the nature of urban development as well. New studies and concepts like 3Rs, cradle-to-cradle, industrial ecology, and integrated waste management are adding new dimensions for solving waste problems towards achieving sustainable resource use. Local initiatives, both public and private are in the forefront of adopting alternate waste management procedures. The assistance from various government and private bodies, supporting shifts in waste management approaches, have immense value, as according to the new paradigms, nothing goes to waste.

Abstract
The use of ultrasound as a processing aid has been explored in various industrial sectors for over fifty years, but the application of this physical energy in food processing is relatively new. In this article, the current research and development activities of power ultrasound centered on food and bioprocessing applications are summarized. The mode of action of ultrasonication is attributed to several mechanical and chemical actions caused by cavitation, which include localized hot spots, formation of shock waves, microsteaming, and liquid jets, as well as the production of chemical species that will also impact the process kinetics and food quality attributes. Means to enhance cavitation activity is addressed. The research needs for the future development of ultrasound food processing are also discussed.

The electromyographic activity of masseter and anterior temporalis during orofacial symptoms induced by experimental occlusal highspot. J Oral Rehabil 2008; 35:79-87. Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the short-term impact of an occlusal highspot on the occurrence of orofacial symptoms by collecting self-evaluation and using electromyography (EMG) evaluation. A rigid unilateral intercuspal occlusal highspot (A cast onlay of 0.5 mm) was placed on the right lower first molar of six adult volunteers (three males, three females), and remained for 6 days. Continuously all the induced orofacial symptoms were collected and the subjects scored the orofacial pain on a 10-cm visual analogue scale (VAS) during the placement of onlay. The surface EMG was recorded before the placement of onlay, during (on the 3rd and 6th day) and after the onlay was removed. Then the contractile symmetry of bilateral masseter (MAL, MAR) and anterior temporalis (TAL, TAR) was measured by using an asymmetry index. On the 3rd day of the placement of the occlusal highspot, all subjects complained of headache in right temporal region (mean VAS +/- s.d.=3.7+/-0.5); the activity of TAR at rest position of mandible increased significantly (P=0.027). In addition, on the 3rd and 6th day with the highspot the EMG activity of the tested muscles during maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) was significantly reduced; the asymmetry index of bilateral anterior temporalis during MVC was increased significantly (P(3rd)=0.028; P(6th)=0.046). A unilateral occlusal highspot may make the ipsilateral anterior temporalis become tenser at rest position. Furthermore, the activity of bilateral anterior temporalis becomes more unsymmetrical during MVC although there are inter-individual differences between subjects. The changes in muscular activity may have some relationship with the occurrence of tension-type headache in temporal region.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the effect of sinomenine (SIN), an alkaloid extracted from sinomenium acutum on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. For this investigation, mice were s.c. immunized with type II collagen (CII) emulsified with complete Freund's adjuvant (day 0). Varying doses of SIN were orally administered daily commencing on day 0 daily over a period of 55 days. The severity of arthritis was evaluated according to clinical score, the effect of SIN on immune responses were determined by measurement of proliferative responses of spleen cells, antibody levels in serum and cytokine assays. Anti-CII IgG2a and IFN-gamma were measured as indicators of Th1 immune responses and anti-CII IgG1, IgE and IL-5 as those of Th2 responses. IL-10 and TGF-beta were measured as indicators of T cell regulator responses. The results showed that treatment with SIN was followed by decreases in the incidence and severity of CIA, anti-CII IgG and the antigen-specific splenocyte proliferation. Production of all isotypes of antibodies including anti-CII IgG2a, IgG1 and IgE as well as secretion of cytokines such as IFN-gamma and IL-5 were suppressed by SIN. In addition, SIN enhanced the secretion of TGF-beta while it had no obvious effect on production of IL-10. These results suggest that the anti-arthritic effect of SIN may be related to the suppression of both Th1 and Th2 immune responses. TGF-beta may at least in part contribute to the suppression of Th1 as well as Th2 immune responses.

Cryoablation induces necrosis and apoptosis in lung adenocarcinoma in mice. Technol Cancer Res Treat 2008; 6:635-40. Abstract
This study evaluated cryoablation on subcutaneously transplanted tumors of lung adenocarcinoma LA795 in T739 mice in vivo, in an effort to assess the feasibility of cryoablation in treatment of NSCLC. Subcutaneously transplanted lung adenocarcinoma LA795 was implanted into T739 mice yielding tumors of approximately 2.5 cm in diameter. Following cryoablation, the various modes of cell death were studied: necrosis in the central frozen zone by light microscopy and apoptosis in periphery of the frozen zone by in situ end labeling (TUNEL). Bc1-2 and bax expression were detected by immunohistochemical SABC procedures, and the cleavage and activation of Caspase 3 and PARP in peripheral zone by Western blot. We find that in central cryoablated zone, necrosis was the dominant mode of cell death occurring at three hours and four days post-thaw. The first three-hour necrosis peak involved approximately 47% of the tumor while the four-day peak increased in volume to 68% of the tumor. In peripheral cryoablation zone, definite cell apoptosis could be observed by morphological examination under light microscope and TUNEL staining, peaking at 8-16 h after cryoablation. Immunohistochemical results yielded little change in bcl-2 protein expression before and after cryoablation. However, bax protein expression was up-regulated significantly after cryoablation. In addition, cleavage and activation of Caspase-3 and PARP occurred in the peripheral freeze zone after the treatment. It indicated that Cryoablation efficiently induces cell death both by necrosis and apoptosis. Cryoablation appears to induce apoptosis in the peripheral freeze zone through the intrinsic mitochondrial caspase pathway based on bax upregulation. This observation allows us to suggest that cryoablation may be combined with chemotherapy to increase cancer destruction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) plays an important role in the lung and in augmenting allergic inflammation in asthma. The gene encoding ANP, NPPA, is located on chromosome 1p36, a region that has been linked to asthma. OBJECTIVES Determine associations between asthma and four common SNPs on the NPPA gene: C/G (rs13305986) in the promoter; G/A (rs5063) in Exon 1 resulting in NPPAMet32-->Val substitution; T/C (rs5065) in Exon 3 resulting in an Arg152-->Ter substitution; and T/C in the 3'UT region (rs5067). Methods A case-control design was used in White participants. The screening cohort consisted of 336 asthmatic cases who participated in a large clinical trial and 154, non-asthmatic controls. The replicate cohort consisted of 172 asthmatic cases from a second clinical trial and 115 healthy controls. Demographic characteristics were well matched for cases and controls in the screening cohort. Adjusted (age, gender, body mass index) odds ratio (OR) were calculated by chi(2) and logistic regression; a P-value of 0.0167 defined the threshold of significance. RESULTS The C allele of rs5067 was associated with asthma in the screening and replicate cohorts: adjusted ORs (95% confidence intervals) 0.5 (0.29-0.84; P=0.009) and 0.24 (0.11-0.53; P<0.0001), respectively. The C allele of rs5065 was associated with asthma in the screening cohort but not in the replicate. The population-attributable risk for asthma in carriers of the C allele for rs5067 was 23.3%. CONCLUSIONS For rs5067, the risks of asthma in carriers of the C allele in the screening and replicate cohorts were reduced by 50% and 76%, respectively. NPPA may be an important susceptibility gene for asthma.

Abstract
Concentrations of selected heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Ni and Fe) in surface sediments from nine sites in western Xiamen Bay and its vicinity were studied in order to understand current metal contamination due to urbanization and economic development in Xiamen, China. The sediment samples were collected in December 2004 and July 2005 respectively in order to examine temporal variations. In this study, we found that heavy metal concentrations in surface sediments sampled in the western Xiamen Bay and adjacent Maluan Bay and Yuandang Lagoon varied from 19 to 97mg kg(-1) for Cu, 45 to 60mg kg(-1) for Pb, 65 to 223mg kg(-1) for Zn, 0.11 to 1.01mg kg(-1) for Cd, 37 to 134mg kg(-1) for Cr, 25 to 65mg kg(-1) for Ni and 3.08 to 4.81% for Fe. Although all metal concentrations in sediments meets Chinese National Standard Criteria for Marine Sediment Quality, both metal enrichment factors (EF) and geoaccumulation index (I(geo)) show that Pb contamination exists in the entire study area and contamination of other metals are also present in some locations depending on the sources, of which sewage outlets and commercial ports are the main sources of contaminants to the area. This study shows that using the sediment quality standard criteria only to assess sediments cannot properly reflect sediment contamination. A multiple approaches should be applied for the sediment quality assessment.

Abstract
This paper deals with a new method to evaluate distorted grids. Instead of evaluating point-by-point the new method consists of shifting an image of a distorted grid over another image of the undistorted grid to obtain displacement components, or shifting an image of a distorted grid over another image of the same distorted grid to obtain the derivative of the displacement components. Whole field information is available by connecting grid line intersections.Displacements and their spacial derivatives are given for a circular ring diametrically compressed, using both the Eulerian and the Lagrangian descriptions. The method has applications in plasticity and in elastic finite strain determinations.

Abstract
In this study, mineral magnetic, particle size and geochemical analyses were conducted on intertidal sediments from the Yangtze Estuary to examine the feasibility of heavy metal concentrations normalization using magnetic techniques. Susceptibility of Anhysteretic Remanent Magnetization (chiARM), the ratio of chiARM to SIRM (Saturation Isothermal Remanent Magnetization) and susceptibility (chiARM/SIRM and chiARM/chi, respectively), and to a lesser degree, frequency dependent susceptibility (chifd), displayed significant correlations with the fine sediment fraction (<16 microm). The strong relationships between chiARM and heavy metals can be explained by the role of particle size and iron oxides in controlling metal concentrations. This study demonstrates that chiARM can be used to normalize for particle size effects as efficiently as common reference elements such as Al. Furthermore, the rapid and non-destructive nature of mineral magnetic measurement technique means that chiARM has a considerable application value in environmental quality monitoring and related studies.

Abstract
We describe the neuroradiologic findings in a 7-year-old boy with anomalous intracranial venous drainage and cerebral calcification. CT scans demonstrated that his scalp mass was a plexus of scalp veins filled through the emissary foramen, and there were cerebral calcifications. Angiography revealed bilateral sigmoid sinus atresia with most of the intracranial venous drainage via the prominent mastoid emissary veins into dilated scalp vein. The possible relationship between cerebral calcification and anomalous intracranial venous drainage is discussed.

Protein serine/threonine phosphatase-1 dephosphorylates p53 at Ser-15 and Ser-37 to modulate its transcriptional and apoptotic activities. Oncogene 2006; 25:3006-22. Abstract
We have previously demonstrated that the serine/threonine protein phosphatase-1 (PP-1) plays an important role in promoting cell survival. However, the molecular mechanisms by which PP-1 promotes survival remain largely unknown. In the present study, we provide evidence to show that PP-1 can directly dephosphorylate a master regulator of apoptosis, p53, to negatively modulate its transcriptional and apoptotic activities, and thus to promote cell survival. As a transcriptional factor, the function of p53 can be greatly regulated by phosphorylation and dephosphorylation. While the kinases responsible for phosphorylation of the 17 serine/threonine sites have been identified, the dephosphorylation of these sites remains largely unknown. In the present study, we demonstrate that PP-1 can dephosphorylate p53 at Ser-15 and Ser-37 through co-immunoprecipitation, in vitro and in vivo dephosphorylation assays, overexpression and silence of the gene encoding the catalytic subunit for PP-1. We further show that mutations mimicking constitutive dephosphorylation or phosphorylation of p53 at these sites attenuate or enhance its transcriptional activity, respectively. As a result of the changed p53 activity, expression of the downstream apoptosis-related genes such as bcl-2 and bax is accordingly altered and the apoptotic events are either largely abrogated or enhanced. Thus, our results demonstrate that PP-1 directly dephosphorylates p53, and dephosphorylation of p53 has as important impact on its functions as phosphorylation does. In addition, our results reveal that one of the molecular mechanisms by which PP-1 promotes cell survival is to dephosphorylate p53, and thus negatively regulate p53-dependent death pathway.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single photodynamic therapy (PDT) on brain edema and intracranial pressure (ICP) in a rabbit model of brain tumor. A total of 57 adult New Zealand rabbits were assigned to 3 groups: the PDT group, the tumor group, and the tumor plus PDT group. Rabbits in the PDT group (n = 9) received PDT but no tumor implantation; rabbits in the tumor group (n = 18) received VX2 carcinoma implantation but no PDT; rabbits in the tumor plus PDT group (n = 30) received tumor implantation with subsequent PDT 16 days later. Brain edema and ICP levels were then evaluated. We found that ICP in the PDT group was 7.43 +/- 0.50 mmHg. After tumor implantation, ICP increased rapidly (18.43 +/- 1.10 mmHg, 21 days later). PDT alone did not increase ICP, but compared with that in the tumor group, ICP increased significantly in the tumor plus PDT group (9.55 +/- 1.32 vs. 13.31 +/- 1.13 mmHg, p < 0.01) 24 hours after treatment. Brain water content in the tumor group increased rapidly after tumor implantation. PDT again increased perineoplastic brain edema 24 hours after treatment (81.09 +/- 0.97% vs. 78.32 +/- 0.49%, p < 0.01). It should be noted that PDT alone did not induce brain edema. In conclusion, PDT causes transient brain edema and increases ICP in a rabbit brain tumor model.

Abstract
Increased EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) expression has been reported in many types of human cancer and its levels are positively associated with advanced cancers. Recently, upregulation of Id-1 (inhibitor of differentiation or DNA binding) protein was found in over 70% of ovarian cancer samples and correlated with poor survival of ovarian cancer patients. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for the role of Id-1 in ovarian cancer are not clear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Id-1 on ovarian cancer proliferation and its association with the EGFR pathway. To achieve this, we transfected an Id-1 expression vector into three ovarian cancer cell lines and examined cell proliferation rate by flow cytometry and bromodeoxyuridine staining. We found that ectopic Id-1 expression led to increased cell proliferation demonstrated by increased BrdU incorporation rate and S-phase fraction. The Id-1-induced cell growth was associated with upregulation of EGFR at both transcriptional and protein levels. In contrast, inactivation of Id-1 through transfection of an Id-1 antisense vector resulted in downregulation of EGFR. Our results indicate that increased Id-1 in ovarian cancer cells may promote cancer cell proliferation through upregulation of EGFR. Our findings also implicate that Id-1 may be a potential target for the development of novel strategies in the treatment of ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Three short sediment cores (<20 cm) were collected in the high, middle and low tidal flats in the Yangtze River Estuary near the Southern (Nanqu) Sewage Outlet, one of the three largest sewage outlets in Shanghai, China. All samples were analyzed for Al, Cu, Pb, Zn, 210Pb and 7Be. The 210Pbxs profile shows a non-steady-state sedimentation pattern in the study area and 7Be is only found in the upper 1 cm layer of sediment in high and middle tidal flats. In this study, we found that Cu, Pb and Zn contaminants are present in the upper 20 cm of the tidal flat sediment and, after normalizing with Al, the contamination is more striking in the upper approximately 5 cm sediment. Relationships between the metal (Cu, Pb and Zn) enrichment factor and 210Pbxs activity suggest that contamination increases with time. Factor analyses shows that differences in sediment grain size have insignificant effects on Cu and Pb concentrations, but have some influence on Zn concentration in the study area. This preliminary study shows that urbanization and recent coastal wetland reclamation have had an environmental impact on this area.

Abstract
Enterogenous cysts mostly locate in the spinal canal and have only rarely been reported in an intracranial site. We report a case of enterogenous cyst in the ventral to brainstem. The 45-year-old woman presented with paroxysmal headache and diplopia. A CT scan and MRI revealed a cystic clival mass from midbrain to medulla. Subtotal resection was performed using a sub-temporal approach and the patient made a good recovery. Pathological examination revealed that the lesion was a typical enterogenous cyst.

Novel identification of a four-base-pair deletion mutation in PITX2 in a Rieger syndrome family. J Dent Res 2003; 82:1008-12. Abstract
Rieger syndrome is one of the most serious causes of tooth agenesis. Mutations in the PITX2, FOXC1, and PAX6 genes have been associated with Rieger syndrome. We have studied a three-generation Chinese family affected with Rieger syndrome and showing prominent dental abnormalities. Mutational screening and sequence analysis of the PITX2 gene revealed a previously unidentified four-base-pair deletion of nucleotides 717-720 in exon 5 in all affected members. The mutation causes a frame shift after Thr44, the 7th amino acid of the homeo-domain, and introduces a premature stop codon in the gene sequence. This deletion is the first unquestionable loss-of-function mutation, deleting all the functionally important parts of the protein. Our novel discovery indicates that the oligodontia and other phenotypes of Rieger syndrome observed in this family are due to this PITX2 mutation, and these data further support the critical role of PIXT2 in tooth morphogenesis.

Nitric oxide alleviates oxidative damage in the green alga Chlorella pyrenoidosa caused by UV-B radiation. Folia Microbiol (Praha) 2003; 48:389-93. Abstract
The effect of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280-320 nm) on induction of nitric oxide was estimated in the suspensions of green alga Chlorella pyrenoidosa with or without the NO scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine, and reductants such as 1,4-dithiothreitol, glutathione (reduced form), and ascorbic acid. Exogenously added sodium nitroprusside (NO donor), glutathione, 1,4-dithiothreitol, and ascorbic acid were able to prevent chlorophyll loss mediated by UV-B. Addition of NO to algal suspensions irradiated by UV-B increased the activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase but lowered the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase. UV-B thus appears to be a strong inducer of NO production, exogenously added NO and reductants protecting the green alga against UV-B-induced oxidative damage.

Abstract
Fertilization abnormalities are commonly encountered following in vitro fertilization. The widespread introduction of assisted fertilization methods has rapidly led to a changes in both the incidence and types of these aberrations. Such abnormalities can be identified by careful morphological evaluation at the early zygote stage, of pronuclei as well as of polar body formation, and may be confirmed by cytogenetic assessment. The recognition and understanding of fertilization abnormalities have led to the development of novel techniques aimed at preventing them, as well as recent bold attempts at correction. Removal of one pronucleus may allow some triploid embryos to revert to a normal diploid stage. These new developments should provide insight into the understanding of parthenogenesis, androgenesis, and gynogenesis in the human. Microsc. Res. Tech. 61:358-361, 2003.

Abstract
AbstractA series of measurements of the structure of a variety of porous materials has been made using synchrotron computed microtomography (SCMT). The work was carried out at the Brookhaven National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), the Argonne Advanced Photon Source (APS) and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). The experiments at Brookhaven and Argonne were carried out on bending magnet beam lines using area detectors to obtain CT images based on determination of X-ray absorption coefficients. The work at the ESRF used an undulator beam line, a 13 KeV pencil X-ray beam of 2 µm and an energy dispersive X-ray detector to make tomographic sections of trace element distributions by X-ray fluorescence tomography. Most of the work was done with a pixel/voxel size ranging from 0.002 to 0.010 mm. We examined the structure of unconsolidated estuarine sediments, whose structure is relevant to transport of contaminants in rivers and estuaries. Fluorescent tomography with 2–3 µm resolution was used to ascertain whether or not metals were concentrated on the surface or throughout the volume of a single sediment particle. Sandstone samples were investigated to obtain a set of values describing their microstructures that could be useful in fluid flow calculations relevant to petroleum recovery or transport of environmental contaminants. Measurements were also made on sandstone samples that had been subjected to high-pressure compression to investigate the relation between the microgeometry and the magnitude of the applied pressure. Finally, a Wood’s metal-filled sample was scanned for demonstration of resolution enhancement and fluid flow studies.
