Abstract
This article focuses on postural anticipation and multi-joint coordination during locomotion in healthy and autistic children. Three questions were addressed. (1) Are gait parameters modified in autistic children? (2) Is equilibrium control affected in autistic children? (3) Is locomotion adjusted to the experimenter-imposed goal? Six healthy children and nine autistic children were instructed to walk to a location (a child-sized playhouse) inside the psychomotor room of the pedopsychiatric centre located approximately 5 m in front of them. A kinematic analysis of gait (ELITE system) indicates that, rather than gait parameters or balance control, the main components affected in autistic children during locomotion are the goal of the action, the orientation towards this goal and the definition of the trajectory due probably to an impairment of movement planning.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sensitive skin is a frequently evoked cosmetic disorder, but its prevalence in France is unknown. METHODS Using a survey of a representative sample of the French population aged over 15 carried out by ISPSOS-Santé, we assessed the frequency of sensitive skin. We used the quota method (gender, age, occupation of the head of the family) and stratification by area and category of the agglomeration. RESULTS One thousand and six persons were surveyed. The non-response rate was less than 1 p.cent. Fifty-two percent claimed they had sensitive or very sensitive skin. Women were predominantly concerned (59 vs. 44 p.cent, p<0.0001). There was no significant difference between the socio-professional categories. Twenty-eight p.cent of the population claiming their skin was very sensitive declared they had a concomitant dermatological disease, whereas 14 p.cent with sensitive skin, 7 p.cent with not very sensitive skin and 2 p.cent with normal skin declared likewise. Skin sensitivity was triggered by emotion, cold, heat or cosmetics. A quality-of-life assessment using the SF-12 scale showed significant alteration in the psychological dimension (but not physical) of the score for those with sensitive and very sensitive skin compared with the others, notably in the women (p<0.0001). DISCUSSION This survey revealed a prevalence of sensitive skin in France equal to that found in England. It only measured the subjective feeling of sensitive skin experienced by those surveyed, since there was no clinical examination. The phenomenon appears frequent. Although women appeared to suffer more, a large proportion of men also suffered from sensitive skin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Treatment with interferon and subcutaneous cytarabine produces superior cytogenetic responses in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) than treatment with interferon alone, but at the expense of greater toxicity. Cytarabine ocfosfate (YNK01) is an oral precursor of cytarabine that may overcome some of the inconvenience and toxicities associated with subcutaneous cytarabine administration. PATIENTS AND METHODS We studied the efficacy and tolerability of combination therapy with interferon-alpha-2b and YNK01 in patients with newly diagnosed, untreated CML. Forty patients were treated with interferon-alpha-2b (5 MU/m2/day) plus monthly courses of YNK01 (600 mg/day for 10 days) for 1 year. RESULTS The 6-month complete haematological response rate was 63% and the 1-year major cytogenetic response rate was 30%, with 10% of cytogenetic responses being complete. With a median follow-up of 57 months, the estimated 5-year overall survival was 86% (95% confidence interval 70% to 94%). Treatment tolerability was poor, with toxicity leading to discontinuation of one or both drugs in 60% of cases. The median daily dose of interferon alpha-2b was 7.75 MU and the median dose of YNK01 was 600 mg/day for each 10-day treatment cycle. CONCLUSIONS Interferon-alpha-2b and YNK01 produce cytogenetic responses comparable to those achieved with interferon-alpha-2b and parenteral cytarabine, although toxicity was excessive. Alternate dosing strategies may enhance the tolerability of YNK01.

Abstract
CandidaDB is a database dedicated to the genome of the most prevalent systemic fungal pathogen of humans, Candida albicans. CandidaDB is based on an annotation of the Stanford Genome Technology Center C.albicans genome sequence data by the European Galar Fungail Consortium. CandidaDB Release 2.0 (June 2004) contains information pertaining to Assembly 19 of the genome of C.albicans strain SC5314. The current release contains 6244 annotated entries corresponding to 130 tRNA genes and 5917 protein-coding genes. For these, it provides tentative functional assignments along with numerous pre-run analyses that can assist the researcher in the evaluation of gene function for the purpose of specific or large-scale analysis. CandidaDB is based on GenoList, a generic relational data schema and a World Wide Web interface that has been adapted to the handling of eukaryotic genomes. The interface allows users to browse easily through genome data and retrieve information. CandidaDB also provides more elaborate tools, such as pattern searching, that are tightly connected to the overall browsing system. As the C.albicans genome is diploid and still incompletely assembled, CandidaDB provides tools to browse the genome by individual supercontigs and to examine information about allelic sequences obtained from complementary contigs. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Describe a rare localization of spontaneous cerebrospinal fistula. CASE REPORT A 75-year-old women was admitted for bacterial meningitis arising from a sinus infection. She had not experienced facial or head trauma. The CT-scan revealed pneumocephaly and a defect in the posterior part of the sphenoid sinus. DISCUSSION Spontaneous cerebrospinal fistula is uncommon. The exact etiology remains unknown.

(Sir Francis Bacon, Sylva sylvarum (1627).)Fifty per cent of people with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) (also known as immotile cilia syndrome or Siewert-Kartagener syndrome) have situs inversus, which is thought to result from absent nodal ciliary rotation and failure of normal symmetry breaking. In a study of 88 people with PCD, only 15.2% of 46 individuals with situs inversus, and 14.3% of 42 individuals with situs solitus, were left handed. Because cerebral lateralization is therefore still present, the nodal cilia cannot be the primary mechanism responsible for symmetry breaking in the vertebrate body. Intriguingly, one behavioural lateralization, wearing a wrist-watch on the right wrist, did correlate with situs inversus.

Abstract
CCR5 plays a key role in the distribution of CD45RO+ T cells and contributes to generation of a T helper 1 immune response. CCR5-Delta32 is a 32-bp deletion associated with significant reduction in cell surface expression of the receptor. We investigated the role of CCR5-Delta32 on susceptibility to ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's disease (CD) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Genotype and allelic association analyses were performed in 162 patients with UC, 131 with CD, 71 with PSC and 419 matched controls. There was a significant difference in CCR5 genotype (OR 2.27, P=0.003) between patients with sclerosing cholangitis and controls. Similarly, CCR5-Delta32 allele frequency was significantly higher in sclerosing cholangitis (17.6%) compared to controls (9.9%, OR 2.47, P=0.007) and inflammatory bowel disease patients without sclerosing cholangitis (11.3%, OR 1.9, P=0.027). There were no significant differences in CCR5 genotype or allele frequency between those with either UC or CD and controls. Genotypes with the CCR5-Delta32 variant were increased in patients with severe liver disease defined by portal hypertension and/or transplantation (45%) compared to those with mild liver disease (21%, OR 3.17, P=0.03). The CCR5-Delta32 mutation may influence disease susceptibility and severity in patients with PSC.

Abstract
HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS A 34-year-old previously healthy woman was admitted to another hospital because of abdominal pain, cough and dyspnea. Peripheral eosinophilia was present. Two months later she was admitted to the cardiology department with signs of mitral regurgitation. Dyspnea, fatigue, skin rashes with pruritus and a systolic murmur were noted. INVESTIGATIONS Laboratory tests showed 11.4/nl leukocytes (normal range 4.8-10.8/nl) with an eosinophilia of 19% (normal range < 4%) corresponding to 2.2/nl. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revealed endomyocardial fibrosis involving the posterior mitral leaflet with resulting valvular regurgitation. Doppler ultrasound showed restrictive heart failure. DIAGNOSIS, THERAPY AND FURTHER COURSE: The diagnosis of idiopathic hypereosinophilia most likely as part of hypereosinophilic syndrome with cardiac involvement was made. The patient was treated with digitalis, diuretics and peptidyl dipeptidase (PDP) inhibitor. The treatment with glucocorticoids and cytotoxic agent to achieve a reduction of eosinophil count was ended by the patient a few weeks later. CONCLUSION The hypereosinophilic syndrome with endomyocardial fibrosis is rare, and its prognosis is grave. The pathophysiological mechanisms are not entirely clear, nearly 70 years after Löffler first described fibrous endocarditis with eosinophilia. Patients receive symptomatic medical therapies. Additional surgical treatment has been reported,. Antihypereosinophilic therapy is used to control the disease.

Abstract
The CATH database of protein domain structures (http://www.biochem.ucl.ac.uk/bsm/cath_new) currently contains 34 287 domain structures classified into 1383 superfamilies and 3285 sequence families. Each structural family is expanded with domain sequence relatives recruited from GenBank using a variety of efficient sequence search protocols and reliable thresholds. This extended resource, known as the CATH-protein family database (CATH-PFDB) contains a total of 310 000 domain sequences classified into 26 812 sequence families. New sequence search protocols have been designed, based on these intermediate sequence libraries, to allow more regular updating of the classification. Further developments include the adaptation of a recently developed method for rapid structure comparison, based on secondary structure matching, for domain boundary assignment. The philosophy behind CATHEDRAL is the recognition of recurrent folds already classified in CATH. Benchmarking of CATHEDRAL, using manually validated domain assignments, demonstrated that 43% of domains boundaries could be completely automatically assigned. This is an improvement on a previous consensus approach for which only 10-20% of domains could be reliably processed in a completely automated fashion. Since domain boundary assignment is a significant bottleneck in the classification of new structures, CATHEDRAL will also help to increase the frequency of CATH updates.

Abstract
Alcohol and tobacco consumption are closely correlated and published results on their association with breast cancer have not always allowed adequately for confounding between these exposures. Over 80% of the relevant information worldwide on alcohol and tobacco consumption and breast cancer were collated, checked and analysed centrally. Analyses included 58,515 women with invasive breast cancer and 95,067 controls from 53 studies. Relative risks of breast cancer were estimated, after stratifying by study, age, parity and, where appropriate, women's age when their first child was born and consumption of alcohol and tobacco. The average consumption of alcohol reported by controls from developed countries was 6.0 g per day, i.e. about half a unit/drink of alcohol per day, and was greater in ever-smokers than never-smokers, (8.4 g per day and 5.0 g per day, respectively). Compared with women who reported drinking no alcohol, the relative risk of breast cancer was 1.32 (1.19-1.45, P<0.00001) for an intake of 35-44 g per day alcohol, and 1.46 (1.33-1.61, P<0.00001) for >/=45 g per day alcohol. The relative risk of breast cancer increased by 7.1% (95% CI 5.5-8.7%; P<0.00001) for each additional 10 g per day intake of alcohol, i.e. for each extra unit or drink of alcohol consumed on a daily basis. This increase was the same in ever-smokers and never-smokers (7.1% per 10 g per day, P<0.00001, in each group). By contrast, the relationship between smoking and breast cancer was substantially confounded by the effect of alcohol. When analyses were restricted to 22 255 women with breast cancer and 40 832 controls who reported drinking no alcohol, smoking was not associated with breast cancer (compared to never-smokers, relative risk for ever-smokers=1.03, 95% CI 0.98-1.07, and for current smokers=0.99, 0.92-1.05). The results for alcohol and for tobacco did not vary substantially across studies, study designs, or according to 15 personal characteristics of the women; nor were the findings materially confounded by any of these factors. If the observed relationship for alcohol is causal, these results suggest that about 4% of the breast cancers in developed countries are attributable to alcohol. In developing countries, where alcohol consumption among controls averaged only 0.4 g per day, alcohol would have a negligible effect on the incidence of breast cancer. In conclusion, smoking has little or no independent effect on the risk of developing breast cancer; the effect of alcohol on breast cancer needs to be interpreted in the context of its beneficial effects, in moderation, on cardiovascular disease and its harmful effects on cirrhosis and cancers of the mouth, larynx, oesophagus and liver.

Abstract
The GQ and individual scales from the Griffiths Mental Development Scales (2-8 years) have differing means and standard deviations. They differ from the common standard among developmental tests. Direct comparisons between Griffiths subscale scores and between the Griffiths and other test scores are therefore prone to misinterpretation. A corrective formula for Griffiths scores is supplied with tables for popularly used ranges.

Abstract
AIM Patients with retinal vein occlusions (RVO) are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The risk of future CVD was determined using the Framingham algorithm and this risk estimate was used to guide decisions about preventative treatment for CVD in RVO patients. METHODS 107 unselected RVO patients were studied. After excluding 18 patients because of age, missing data, or pre-existing cardiovascular disease, the calculated coronary heart disease risks (cCHDR) and calculated cardiovascular disease risks (cCVDR) were calculated on the 89 remaining and compared with both the standardised risk and the published incidence of CHD in England by t test or chi(2) test. RESULTS The mean 10 year cCVDR was significantly higher than the Framingham standardised risk for all RVOs (20.6% (1.2%) v 15.7% (1.1%), p = 0.009) and female RVOs (17.8% (1.2%) v 12.7% (1.0%), p = 0.022) in particular. The 10 year cCHDR, compared to the actual incidence of CHD in England between the ages of 30 and 74 years, was > 15% in twice as many males than expected (62% v 28%, p <0.0001). This rose to almost six times when cCHDRs greater than 30% were compared (17% v 3%, p = 0.002). There was a fourfold increase in the proportion of female RVO patients with a cCHDR above 15% (40% v 9%, p <0.0001) and at a cCHDR of 30% and above (10% v 0%, p = 0.004). There were also significant differences in the cCHDR between central and branch RVO (both sexes). The branch form of RVO (BRVO) having higher cCHDRs because of systolic hypertension (164.1 (21.6) mm Hg v 149.5 (23.5) mm Hg, p = 0.003) and age (61.7 (8.3) years v 56.7 (10.6) years, p = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS RVO is the presenting complaint in a group of patients at increased risk of CVD and is in agreement with the long term follow up data demonstrating an increased mortality from CVD in patients with RVO. The Framingham algorithm can accurately determine the cCHDR (or cCVDR) to assist the clinician in deciding who to treat in accordance with the Joint British Societies' guidelines, with particular regard to hypertension, lipid lowering, and the use of aspirin therapy.

Abstract
cDNA clones coding for the plasma protease inhibitor alpha 1-macroglobulin were isolated from a rat liver library. The obtained cDNA sequence contained 4701 nucleotides and had an open reading frame coding for a 1,500 amino acid long protein, including a 24 amino acid signal peptide. The identity of the deduced protein sequence as alpha 1-macroglobulin was established by comparison with published peptide sequences of the protein. The mature protein shares 53% and 57% overall amino acid identity with the two other identified members of the rat alpha-macroglobulin family, alpha 1-inhibitor 3 and alpha 2-macroglobulin. A sequence typical for an internal thiol ester was identified. Of the 24 cysteines, 23 are conserved with alpha 2-macroglobulin. However, instead of the two most C-terminal cysteines in alpha 2-macroglobulin, which forms a disulfide bridge in the receptor binding domain, alpha 1-macroglobulin contains phenylalanine. One mRNA species hybridizing with the alpha 1-macroglobulin probe was observed in rat and mouse liver RNA (approximately 6.2 kb), whereas no corresponding transcript was detected in RNA from human liver.

Abstract
Current therapy for hepatitis C remains far from optimal. The modification of IFN by the attachment of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) moiety has produced long-lasting IFNs. A 40 kDa branched peginterferon alfa-2a (40 kDa) (PEG-IFN alfa-2a) has unique pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. PEG-IFN alfa-2a is absorbed in a sustained manner and its clearance is reduced substantially compared with IFN alfa-2a, resulting in sustained serum drug concentrations. These constant serum drug levels stay above the EC(50) values (effective concentration 50%) needed for antiviral, antiproliferative and immunomodulatory actions. Sustained virological responses were significantly greater in patients who received PEG-IFN alfa-2a versus IFN alfa-2a, with a similar side effect profile. Histological improvements were seen in patients who achieved sustained virological responses and were frequently observed among patients who did not achieve a virological response. The advantages of PEG-IFN alfa-2a were also seen in patients with cirrhosis or hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1.

Abstract
The first reported synthesis of the DNA-PK inhibitor 3-cyano-6-hydrazonomethyl-5-(4-pyridyl)pyrid-[1H]-2-one (OK-1035) is described. The structure of OK-1035 was validated by X-ray crystallography. An IC(50) value of 100 microM was determined for inhibition of DNA-PK, and this is approximately 12-fold higher than that reported previously.

Abstract
Despite documented successes in the battle to clean up the coastal waters of Southern California, Los Angeles County residents continue to view the ocean more as a place of pollution than a vibrant and healthy place for bathing and swimming. This study shows that residents of Los Angeles County tend to hold perceptions of marine water quality that are at odds with data on bacteriological measures of water quality collected by local sanitation districts (and reported by not-for-profit Heal the Bay). Summary results of a survey of 400 randomly chosen households in Los Angeles County are given. Respondents were asked about their beach use and perceptions of environmental quality: both coastal water quality and air quality. The results suggest that perceptions of coastal water quality may be influenced less by "current coastal education campaigns" and more by the media and other factors.

Abstract
The microorganisms involved in cheese ripening produce various volatile compounds and induce typical flavors that contribute to cheese variety. To investigate aroma compound generation of cheese microflora, we used a dynamic headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. To obtain good sensitivity and repeatability of quantification, dynamic headspace conditions and sample preparation were first optimized and led to an extraction set up in which samples were heated at 60 degrees C and diluted with water without pH adjustment. Then three different yeasts and three Geotrichum candidum commonly used in mold surface ripened cheeses were studied in pure culture in a cheese model medium. Thirty-nine cocultures of these three yeasts, the three G. candidum, and five bacteria were studied in the same medium to assess the interaction between microorganisms on aroma compound production. Twenty-four volatile compounds belonging to different chemical classes (alcohols, aldehydes, esters, sulfides, terpenes) were identified and quantified. Yeasts and especially Kluyveromyces lactis produced large amounts of alcohols, aldehydes, esters, and terpenes when cultured alone or in association. Geotrichum candidum and especially G. candidum strain G3 generated the largest amount of sulfides when cultured alone or in association. Finally, bacteria also produced aroma compounds but, except for Brevibacterium linens strain B5, which produced dimethyl trisulfide and ketones, no specific trend in the production of particular aroma compounds could be evidenced.

Abstract
There is a high incidence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) worldwide. The survival rate is among the lowest of the major cancers and has not improved significantly over the past two decades. The KB line of human oral carcinoma cells is a useful experimental system for studies of the biology of oral SCC. In a previous study, we reported inhibition of KB cell proliferation and stimulation of desmosome formation in confluent cultures treated with 20 microM H-7 (1-(5-isoquinolinylsulfonyl)-2-methylpiperazine). In the present study, the effects of this protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor on the survival of KB cells were investigated. Apoptotic cells were detected using a combination of Hoechst 33258 nuclear stain, TUNEL technique and ultrastructural analysis. Our results indicated that H-7 significantly increased apoptosis in KB cells in a dose-dependent manner. Maximal stimulation occurred at 100 microM, the highest dose of H-7 tested. Apoptotic cells exhibited nuclear fragmentation, chromatin condensation and apoptotic bodies. Interestingly, H-7 and fetal calf serum (FCS) acted synergistically to increase apoptosis in KB cells, suggesting that there is a serum activated subpopulation of H-7 target cells in the cultures. The underlying mechanism of activation remains to be elucidated. Our study suggests that the PKC inhibitor H-7 is a potentially useful cytostatic agent for oral carcinoma cells.

Abstract
The von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumour suppressor gene is commonly mutated in renal cell carcinoma of clear cell type (CCRCC). We investigated the possible relationship between VHL mutations in sporadic CCRCC and polymorphism of genes encoding enzymes involved in carcinogen metabolism: two cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYP1A1 and CYP2D6), one NAD[P]H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1), three glutathione S-transferases (GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1) and two arylamine N-acetyltransferases (NAT1 and NAT2). We analysed DNA from tumour and nontumoural kidney tissue from 195 CCRCC patients. Single VHL mutations were identified in 88 patients and double mutations were present in two patients. Nine of 18 transversions were GC to TA, four were AT to TA, four were GC to CG and one was AT to CG. Ten of 19 transitions were GC to AT and nine were AT to GC. We also identified 53 frameshifts and two GC to AT at CpG. An excess of transversions was observed in a subset of patients with active GSTT1 [GSTT1 (+) genotype] and probably defective NAT1 (NAT1 S/R variant genotype). All 18 transversions were in GSTT1 (+) patients, whereas only 76% of transitions (P = 0.05) and 81% of the other mutations (P = 0.06) occurred in this genotype. We found that 28% of the transversions were in the NAT1 S/R genotype versus 12% of the transitions (P = 0.40) and 4% of the other mutations (P = 0.01). This suggests that pharmacogenetic polymorphisms may be associated with the type of acquired VHL mutation, which may modulate CCRCC development.
