Abstract
Sperm capacitation is a maturation event that takes place in the female reproductive tract and is essential for fertilization. A family of phospholipid-binding proteins present in bovine seminal plasma (BSP proteins) binds the sperm membrane at ejaculation and promotes bovine sperm capacitation. Homologues of these proteins have also been isolated from boar, ram, goat, bison and stallion seminal fluid, suggesting that BSP proteins and their homologues are conserved among mammals. However, there have been no reports on BSP-homologous proteins in mice and humans to date. A search of the mouse and human genomes, using the nucleic acid sequences of BSP proteins, revealed the presence of three BSP-like sequences in the mouse genome, named mouse BSP Homologue 1 (mBSPH1), mBSPH2 and mBSPH3, and one sequence in the human genome (hBSPH1). Mouse epididymal expressed sequence tags corresponding to partial sequences of mBSPH1 and mBSPH2 were identified. The entire complementary DNA (cDNA) sequences of mBSPH1 and mBSPH2 from mouse epididymis and hBSPH1 from human epididymis were obtained by 5'-/3'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) and encode predicted proteins containing two tandemly repeated fibronectin type II domains, which is the signature of the BSP family of proteins. Using RT-PCR, it was revealed that mBSPH1, mBSPH2 and hBSPH1 mRNA are expressed only in the epididymis. Expression of mBSPH3 was not detected in any tissue and probably represents a pseudogene. This work shows, for the first time, that BSP homologues are expressed in mouse and human and may be involved in sperm capacitation in these species.

Abstract
Linear and nonlinear circular dichroism of R-(+)-3-methylcyclopentanone (R-3MCP) is reported in the gas and liquid phases. Measurements of (2+1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization circular dichroism (REMPICD) for nozzle-jet expanded molecular beams of the equatorial conformer of R-3MCP are presented. Monitoring either mass-selected cations or photoelectrons produced via (2+1) REMPI through the n --> 3s Rydberg transition yielded a REMPICD of +1.5+/-0.5% [REMPICD identical with 2(I(L)-I(R))(I(L)+I(R))], where I(L/R) refers to the ion/electron signal for left/right circularly polarized light. A racemic mixture of 3-methylcyclopentanone showed no significant CD; however, the signal fluctuations were much larger than that observed for the resolved R-(+)-3-methylcyclopentanone as might be expected for the small number of ions produced from slightly unequal numbers of enantiomers in each laser shot. Gas phase, vibrationally resolved, one-photon CD for vapor phase R-(+)-3-methylcyclopentanone (i.e., admixture of five axial and equatorial forms) was measured to be approximately 0 and -0.004 at photon energies corresponding to the one- (nonresonant) and two-(3s resonance) photon energy levels. The one-photon CD (of the room temperature population of conformers) at an energy corresponding to the ionization step was measured previously to be approximately +0.0011 which is of the same sign as the REMPICD. The first step is also near a positive CD region. This suggests that the (2+1) REMPICD is determined primarily by both the initial and continuum steps. The one-photon CDs for the equatorial and axial forms of 3MCP are calculated, using GAUSSIAN03, to be approximately equal but having opposite sign for the transitions of interest. The CD for 3MCP in cyclohexane is found to be strongly temperature dependent as a result of the presence of both the axial and equatorial conformers. The energy difference between the two conformers is determined from a van't Hoff plot of these data to be 3.50+/-0.05 kJ/mole in cyclohexane and is approximately 1 kJ/mole smaller than measurements employing other methods.

Abstract
3007 Background: MGCD0103 is a novel isotype-selective inhibitor of human HDACs. Deacetylation of histones by HDACs is postulated to inactivate tumor suppressor genes leading to neoplastic transformation. Inhibition of these enzymes might restore normal growth control. Methods: A phase I trial of MGCD0103, given as a three-times weekly oral dose 2 out of every 3 weeks, has been performed in pts with advanced solid tumors. Main endpoints are safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamic (PD) assessments of HDAC activity and histone acetylation status in buffy coat white cells. Results: Five dose levels have been evaluated (mg/m2): 12.5, 20, 27, 36, and 45. As of January, 2006, 28 pts have been enrolled with the following demographics: M:F = 18:10; median age (range) = 60 (29–75); ECOG 0:1:2 = 9:13:1 (n = 23); primary tumor sites: colorectal (8), renal (5), lung (4), others (11); prior chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy were given to 22, 12 and 2 pts, respectively (n=23). A total of 62 cycles have been administered, with median = 2 and range=1–7 cycles. MGCD0103 has been well tolerated; most common AEs (23 pts): grade 1–3 fatigue (91% of pts), grade 1–2 nausea and vomiting (70 and 48%), anorexia (26%), constipation (39%). Disease stabilization > 2 cycles has been observed in 3 renal cell cancer pts (4, 6, and 7 cycles) and 1 colorectal cancer pt (4 cycles). Preliminary PK analyses demonstrated intra-pt PK variability, however co-administration of acidic carbonated beverage (protocol amendment) appears to reduce variability without altering average Cmax or AUC (0–24) comparing Day 1 with Day 14. There was little accumulation or decrease in concentrations with extended dosing, and t1/2 was dose-independent at 7.7–11.3 hr. (±0.6–1.6). PD data reveal dose-dependent maximal inhibition of HDAC activity in patients co-administered an acidic beverage. Conclusions: At doses evaluated MGCD0103 appears tolerated and exhibits favourable PK and PD. [Table: see text]

Abstract
We have previously demonstrated that the amount of HE1/NPC2 mRNA and protein expressed in the human epididymis is decreased under vasectomy. In this study, western blot analyses showed that many vasovasostomized men are characterized by high HE1/NPC2 levels in spermatozoa when compared with fertile donors. HE1/NPC2 association with sperm from vasovasostomized men was not related to low motility per se as spermatozoa from asthenospermic men have HE1/NPC2 levels similar to those in normal fertile semen samples. Spermatozoa from vasovasostomized men with high amount of HE1/NPC2 are characterized by higher concentration of cholesterol and more lipid raft domains. HE1/NPC2 is secreted in different glycoforms by different tissues of human male reproductive tract. These forms are due to variation in N-glycosylation, and only the deglycosylated form is associated with spermatozoa from some vasovasostomized men. Compared with normal men, seminal plasma of vasectomized men is characterized by a major decrease in immunodetectable HE1/NPC2 without change in the glycosylation pattern. Following surgical vasectomy reversal, seminal plasma HE1/NPC2 was found in similar amounts to the ones characterizing normal men. Considering the potential role of HE1/NPC2 in cholesterol transport during sperm maturation, unusual high levels of this protein associated with spermatozoa of vasovasostomized men may reflect epididymal sequelae occurring when the vas deferens is obstructed.

Abstract
A prospective double-blind study was performed to determine if Western blot detection of P34H, a sperm protein of epididymal origin that is involved in the binding to the zona pellucida, is predictive of standard IVF outcome. Our results demonstrate that the proportion of positive P34H cases that produced embryos in vitro clearly differs from cases with undetectable levels of P34H (P<.001).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate sperm cryopreservation-induced injuries using sperm plasma membrane protein P34H and alpha-tubulin as two different subcellular compartment markers. DESIGN Prospective experimental study. SETTING Academic hospital research center and fertility clinic. PATIENT(S) Semen samples obtained from healthy donors attending the fertility clinic. Sperm samples were either directly processed for sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Western blot experiments (control group) or cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen for different periods of time before being analyzed. INTERVENTION(S) SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, and densitometric quantification of P34H and alpha-tubulin before and after cryopreservation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Changes in protein quantification between the different groups as a result of sperm cryopreservation. RESULT(S) In the 31 sperm samples processed for P34H evaluation, a 50% decrease is observed after sperm cryopreservation as compared to the control group. The alpha-tubulin immunoblotting of 41 sperm samples revealed a 200% increase in the protein detection in the group of cryopreserved sperm as compared to the control group. Contrary to the P34H detection, this change in alpha-tubulin immunodetected levels appears to be related to the cryopreservation period as it increases during storage. CONCLUSION(S) These findings indicate that cryopreservation of human semen induces damages at different cellular levels. Moreover, some cryoinjuries are immediate although others seem to take place over time stored in liquid nitrogen.

Abstract
Two enzymes are involved in the polyol pathway: an aldose reductase that reduces glucose in sorbitol followed by its oxidation in fructose by sorbitol dehydrogenase. It has been previously shown that both enzymes are presented in the bovine epididymis, where they are associated with membranous vesicles called epididymosomes. Based on the distribution of these enzymes, it has been hypothesized that the polyol pathway can modulate sperm motility during the epididymal transit. In the present study, polyol pathway was investigated in semen and along the epididymis in humans in order to determine if sperm maturation can be associated with this sugar pathway. Western blot analysis shows that both aldose reductase and sorbitol dehydrogenase are associated with ejaculated spermatozoa and prostasomes in humans. These enzymes are also associated with epididymosomes collected during surgical vasectomy reversal. Western blot, Northern blot, and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis show that aldose reductase and sorbitol dehydrogenase are expressed at the transcriptional and translational levels along the human epididymis. Unlike what occurs in the bovine model, distribution of these enzymes is rather uniform along the human excurrent duct. Immunohistological studies together with Western blot analysis performed on epididymosomes preparations indicate that the polyol pathway enzymes are secreted by the epididymal epithelium. These results indicate that the polyol pathway plays a role in human sperm physiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A number of antigens have been characterized and proposed as potential candidates for immunocontraception. P26h, a 26-kDa hamster sperm protein located on the acrosomal cap, is known to be involved in sperm-zona pellucida interactions. Furthermore, in vivo fertilization can be blocked by active immunization of male hamsters against P26h or maltose-binding protein recombinant P26h (MBP-P26h). OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the immune response and reproductive function of female hamsters immunized against MBP-P26h. RESULTS Active immunization against MBP-P26h resulted in anti-P26h circulating antibodies, with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) titers showing interindividual variability. The antibodies produced by the animals immunized against MBP-P26h reacted with the native P26h protein in ELISA, in Western blot analysis and in immunostaining performed on cauda epididymal spermatozoa. Mating of immunized female hamsters resulted in a significant decrease in the number of viable fetuses only in females with high titers of anti-P26h circulating antibodies. DISCUSSION This result is in agreement with the sperm-zona pellucida binding assay's results. Indeed, sera collected from immunized animals, and not from control animals, significantly blocked sperm-zona pellucida binding in vitro. Histological studies showed that active immunization did not cause any pathology in the reproductive tissues. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that P26h is a potential candidate for the development of a contraceptive vaccine in both males and females.

Abstract
Antagonists of the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) neuropeptide should prove to be effective in treating stress and anxiety-related disorders. In an effort to identify antagonists with improved physicochemical properties, new tricyclic CRF(1) antagonists were designed, synthesized, and tested for biological activity. As a result of studies aimed at establishing a relationship between structure and CRF(1) binding affinity, NBI 35965 (12a) was identified as a high-affinity antagonist with a pK(i) value of 8.5. Compound 12a proved to be a functional CRF(1) antagonist with pIC(50) values of 7.1 and 6.9 in the in vitro CRF-stimulated cAMP accumulation and ACTH production assays, respectively, and 12a also reduced CRF or stress induced ACTH production in vivo.

Abstract
The synthesis and SAR studies of tricyclic imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-ones as human corticotropin-releasing factor receptor (CRF(1)) antagonists are discussed herein. Compound 16g was identified as a functional antagonist that inhibited CRF-stimulated cyclic adenosine monophosphate production and CRF-induced adrenocorticotrophic hormone release. Pharmacokinetics studies in rats showed that 16g was orally bioavailable, had good brain penetration, and had a moderate half-life. In our effort to identify CRF(1) antagonists with improved pharmacokinetics properties, 16g exhibited a favorably lower volume of distribution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In response to burgeoning drug costs, North Carolina (NC) Medicaid encouraged pharmacists and prescribers to develop collaborative programs to reduce drug expenditures. One of these programs, the North Carolina Polypharmacy Initiative, was a focused drug therapy management intervention aimed at reducing polypharmacy in nursing homes. This intervention targeted patients with more than 18 prescription fills in 90 days, beginning in November 2002. These patients were believed to have a high likelihood of experiencing potential drug therapy problems (PDTPs). Consultant pharmacists were asked to utilize profiles displaying alerts generated from pharmacy claims to guide interventions in addition to usual-care drug regimen reviews. The pharmacists documented their reviews, recommendations, and resulting changes in drug therapy. Our objectives were to determine (1) the persistence of PDTP alerts following interventions by consultant pharmacists and (2) the impact of these interventions on patient drug costs from a payer perspective. METHODS A before-after study with comparison group design was used. Medicaid prescription claims data were compared for the 90-day periods prior to the intervention (June-August 2002) and following the intervention (March-June 2003). The 90-day post-intervention period allowed for 2 to 3 follow-up prescriptions and reduced the drop-out rate. The 5 categories of potential problem alerts included potentially inappropriate medications (Beers criteria), substitution opportunity for a lower-cost drug, 16 drugs or drug classes with specific quality improvement opportunities (Clinical Initiatives list), therapeutic duplication, and length of drug therapy evaluation. RESULTS A total of 253 nursing homes, involving 110 consultant pharmacists and 6,344 patients, were in the intervention arm, with 5,160 patients (81.3%) remaining at the end of the follow-up period. At baseline, study-group patients used an average of 9.7 prescriptions per month, costing the NC Medicaid program 517 US dollars per patient per month (PPPM). There were 6,360 recommendations offered for 3,400 patients, or an average of 1.87 recommendations per patient. Physicians concurred with 59.8% (3,801 of 6,360) of all recommendations to change drug therapy, about half involving a switch to a lower-cost drug. Two of 5 alert categories had significant (P <0.01) reductions in alert persistence: -10.8% for the study group versus -0.7% for the comparison group for the Clinical Initiatives list and -29.7% for the study group versus -14.1% in the comparison group for the drug substitution opportunity. Median drug costs per patient in the study group decreased by 12.14 US dollars (-0.92%), from 1,329.46 US dollars to 1,317.32 US dollars, and increased in the comparison group by 44.98 US dollars (3.35%), from 1,341.25 US dollars to 1,386.23 US dollars, creating a relative cost reduction of 57.12 US dollars per patient in the 3-month follow-up period, or 19.04 US dollars PPPM. CONCLUSION A supplemental program of medication reviews for nursing home patients targeted by high drug utilization resulted in a reduction in the persistence of PDTP alerts and was cost beneficial based solely on drug cost savings. This intervention may be a model for future medication therapy management services provided by prescription drug plans under Medicare Part D for patients in long-term-care settings and possibly ambulatory patients.

Abstract
When used correctly, CPAP has been shown to alleviate symptoms and decrease the need for intubation for patients with CHF, COPD and asthma. It is safe, portable and easy to apply. CPAP does not replace intubation, but rather is a less-invasive means of providing respiratory support while medications work to correct the underlying cause of distress.

A 15-year-old girl presented to our institution with erythema nodosum. Results of a workup for underlying disease revealed acute myelogenous leukemia. Underlying malignancy should be investigated in patients presenting with erythema nodosum.

Abstract
During epididymal transit, mammalian spermatozoa acquire new proteins involved in the acquisition of motility and of male gamete fertilising ability. We have previously shown that membranous vesicles called epididymosomes are involved in the transfer of epididymal-originating proteins to spermatozoa. The cytokine macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is one of these proteins but the role played by MIF in relation to epididymal sperm maturation still remains unclear. As this protein has already been shown to bear different functions depending on its location, we investigated its distribution along the epididymis and in different compartments of human semen. Northern and Western blot analysis as well as immunohistochemical studies show that MIF is expressed all along the epididymis with a higher level of transcript in the proximal segment. MIF is associated with two types of membranous vesicles, i.e. epididymosomes and prostasomes, the latter being prostate-originating membranous vesicles present in the semen. In semen, MIF is associated with spermatozoa, prostasomes as well as the soluble fraction. The amount of MIF in the seminal fluid varies from one individual to another but does not correlate with the amount of MIF associated with ejaculated spermatozoa. There is a negative correlation between the amount of sperm-associated MIF and the percentage of motility in different semen samples. Sperm separation using discontinuous Percoll gradient centrifugation shows a higher amount of MIF associated with poorly motile spermatozoa compared to highly motile spermatozoa present in the lower Percoll fraction. These results are discussed with regards to the possible involvement of MIF in sperm motility acquisition during the epididymal transit.

Abstract
Mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) accumulate in tissues of mammalian species and have been hypothesized to contribute to aging. We show that mice expressing a proofreading-deficient version of the mitochondrial DNA polymerase g (POLG) accumulate mtDNA mutations and display features of accelerated aging. Accumulation of mtDNA mutations was not associated with increased markers of oxidative stress or a defect in cellular proliferation, but was correlated with the induction of apoptotic markers, particularly in tissues characterized by rapid cellular turnover. The levels of apoptotic markers were also found to increase during aging in normal mice. Thus, accumulation of mtDNA mutations that promote apoptosis may be a central mechanism driving mammalian aging.

Abstract
The martian surface is a natural laboratory for testing our understanding of the physics of aeolian (wind-related) processes in an environment different from that of Earth. Martian surface markings and atmospheric opacity are time-variable, indicating that fine particles at the surface are mobilized regularly by wind. Regolith (unconsolidated surface material) at the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity's landing site has been affected greatly by wind, which has created and reoriented bedforms, sorted grains, and eroded bedrock. Aeolian features here preserve a unique record of changing wind direction and wind strength. Here we present an in situ examination of a martian bright wind streak, which provides evidence consistent with a previously proposed formational model for such features. We also show that a widely used criterion for distinguishing between aeolian saltation- and suspension-dominated grain behaviour is different on Mars, and that estimated wind friction speeds between 2 and 3 m s(-1), most recently from the northwest, are associated with recent global dust storms, providing ground truth for climate model predictions.

Abstract
Even tough differentiated spermatozoa are unable of transcriptional or translational activity; the sperm surface undergoes major modifications in macromolecules composition during the transit along the male reproductive tract. This is the result of sequential, well orchestrated interactions between the male reproductive tract secretions and the transiting male gamete. This is particularly true when spermatozoa transit along the epididymis. The epididymis is a long convoluted tubules in which the spermatozoa leaving the testis have to transit. The unraveled epididymal tubule can be as long as 80 m in stallion, and the transit time of spermatozoa is of 3-12 days depending on the species. The epididymis is usually divided in three segments: the caput (proximal part), the corpus, and cauda. While the cauda epididymides acts as a sperm reservoir, the caput and corpus are responsible for sperm maturation. This means that, under androgen control, the epididymal epithelium secretes proteins that will interact sequentially with sperm surface. Some of the sperm proteins acquired during maturation along the excurrent duct behave as integral membrane proteins. In fact, some epididymal originating proteins are glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored to the sperm plasma membrane. Our laboratory has shown that some of these proteins are secreted in an apocrine manner by the epididymal epithelium and are associated to exosomes, called epididymosomes. Epididymosomes are rich in sphingomyelin and are characterized by a high cholesterol/phospholipids ratio. Many proteins are associated to epididymosomes, some of which are selectively transferred to spermatozoa during the epididymal transit. We have identified some of these exosomes associated proteins transferred to the maturing spermatozoa. These include two enzymes involved in the polyol pathway: an aldose reductase and a sorbitol dehydrogenase. A cytokine named MIF (macrophage migration inhibitory factor) is another protein associated to exosomes who is transferred to spermatozoa during the epididymal transit. We hypothesized that both the polyol pathway and MIF secreted in an apocrine fashion by the epididymal epithelium modulate sperm motility during the transit along the male reproductive tract. Finally, P25b, belonging to a family of sperm surface proteins (P26h/P34H) necessary for the binding to the surface of the egg, is also acquired through the interaction between epididymosomes and the male gamete. In vitro studies have defined the conditions of protein transfer when epididymal spermatozoa are co-incubated with epididymosomes. The transfer of selected proteins to specific membrane domains of spermatozoa is saturable, temperature and pH-dependent, being optimal at pH 6.5. The presence of zinc in the incubation medium, but not of calcium neither magnesium, significantly increases the efficiency of protein transfer. These results show that exosomes play a role in sperm epididymal maturation which is an essential event to produce male gametes with optimal fertilizing ability.

Abstract
We have identified an 80 kDa protein in ejaculated bull spermatozoa (p80) which is found in acrosomal and post-acrosomal areas of the head. It has a hyaluronidase activity and shares homologies with PH-20, a sperm surface glycoprotein involved in sperm-egg interaction. The aim of the present study was to characterize bull sperm p80 protein at the nucleic and amino acid levels to determine whether it is the bovine PH-20 ortholog. The complete nucleotide sequence determined by RT-PCR, 3' and 5' RACE show that bull p80, displays identity with the PH-20 nucleotide and amino acid sequences. Messenger RNA and protein expressions determined by Northern blot and immunohistochemistry revealed that the protein is testicular (expressed in spermatocytes and spermatids). The localization of p80 on spermatozoa, determined by indirect immunofluorescence using a monoclonal antibody, shows the protein in acrosomal and post acrosomal areas of the head with an increase in the signal intensity as sperm progress through the epididymis. Post-translational modifications of the protein were investigated during the epididymal maturation by Western blot on protein extracts from sperm collected in the caput, corpus and cauda portions of bull epididymis. Glycolysation status of sperm p80 protein on proteins from ejaculated and epididymidal sperm was investigated. Result show that the glycosylation status is modified as spermatozoa migrate through the epididymis. Hyaluronidase activity evaluated in protein extracts from spermatozoa of the three different epididymal sections revealed that the activity is higher at pH 7 than 4 and is not affected by epididymal maturation. These data strongly suggest that p80 is the bovine PH-20.

Abstract
The mammalian epididymis is a fundamental organ for sperm cell maturation; it allows mammals to acquire their fertilizing ability. We have previously shown that during obstruction in cases of vasectomy, gene expression profiles were modified in human and cynomolgus monkey epididymides. Paracrine factors thus appear to be key elements in local gene expression along the epididymis. Local renin-angiotensin systems (RAS) have been described in many other organs as paracrine regulators of gene expression. This work demonstrates the presence of a local RAS in the epididymis of the cynomolgus monkey and investigates the vasectomy-dependent changes occurring in this system. After unilateral vasectomy in 4 monkeys (two for 3 days and two others for 7 days), the presence of two major components of the RAS (ie, angiotensinogen [ANG] and the type 1 receptor to angiotensin II [AT-I]) was evaluated in the vasectomized and the normal controlateral epididymides of each monkey. We also show by in situ hybridization that the principal cells of the epididymis express ANG and AT-I mRNAs and immunohistochemistry permitted to verify the co-localization of the AT-I protein and mRNA. Quantitative comparisons of individual variations in the mRNA and protein profiles for ANG and AT-I revealed that vasectomy altered the RAS expression profiles in an individual manner, thus confirming its role as a local system. This study provides a good basis for further investigation of the possible implications of the RAS in the physiology of the epididymis. Furthermore, the individual dependent modifications are in accordance with the very fluctuating results obtained in the fertility status of human patients undergoing a vasectomy reversal. The variations observed in the RAS expression profiles may be a good model to study the causes of the overall epididymal gene expression dysregulation that follows vasectomy and potentially affects fertility.

Abstract
There is a nationally recognized shortage of pharmacists in the United States that is more pronounced in the West. This shortage will worsen with the rapid growth and aging of the population. Demand for traditional pharmaceutical care services has grown faster in the last decade than predicted and is projected to outpace the entry of pharmacists into the workforce. The growth of direct patient care roles for pharmacists, together with the increasing need for pharmacist services in the management of health care, threatens to overpower the present capacity of pharmaceutical education. Healthcare officials and consumers alike are becoming increasingly concerned about the pressure on pharmacist services leading to decreased access to pharmaceutical care and an increase in the frequency of medication errors both having a major impact on the health of patients. While the impact of the pharmacist shortage on the quality of pharmaceutical care has been the subject of recent concern, the role of pharmacists in economic development has not been adequately addressed. In this review, we examine the impact of the shortage of pharmacists and apply economic principals to the impact created by the addition to a state economy of a public school of pharmacy. We apply this analysis to the proposed addition of a public school of pharmacy in Nevada, the fastest growing state in the nation, which currently has a single, private pharmacy school.

Abstract
The Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity has investigated the landing site in Eagle crater and the nearby plains within Meridiani Planum. The soils consist of fine-grained basaltic sand and a surface lag of hematite-rich spherules, spherule fragments, and other granules. Wind ripples are common. Underlying the thin soil layer, and exposed within small impact craters and troughs, are flat-lying sedimentary rocks. These rocks are finely laminated, are rich in sulfur, and contain abundant sulfate salts. Small-scale cross-lamination in some locations provides evidence for deposition in flowing liquid water. We interpret the rocks to be a mixture of chemical and siliciclastic sediments formed by episodic inundation by shallow surface water, followed by evaporation, exposure, and desiccation. Hematite-rich spherules are embedded in the rock and eroding from them. We interpret these spherules to be concretions formed by postdepositional diagenesis, again involving liquid water.

Abstract
The Microscopic Imager on the Opportunity rover analyzed textures of soils and rocks at Meridiani Planum at a scale of 31 micrometers per pixel. The uppermost millimeter of some soils is weakly cemented, whereas other soils show little evidence of cohesion. Rock outcrops are laminated on a millimeter scale; image mosaics of cross-stratification suggest that some sediments were deposited by flowing water. Vugs in some outcrop faces are probably molds formed by dissolution of relatively soluble minerals during diagenesis. Microscopic images support the hypothesis that hematite-rich spherules observed in outcrops and soils also formed diagenetically as concretions.
