Abstract
The majority of twist drills used in orthopaedics are very similar to chisel pointed metal drilling bits. Modifications usually observed are reduction of the point angle to 90 deg and sometimes grinding of the entire cutting lip at 0 deg rake angle, which appeared to have been made arbitrarily without any advantage. We have attempted to design a surgical drill bit with the objective of minimization of the drilling thrust and temperature and effective removal of bone chips. Our results showed that the presence of the chisel edge was mainly responsible for increasing the thrust force and the temperature developed. The effects of a constant feed rate and thrust on the peak temperature were also examined. The combined effect of the helix and the point angles on the rake angle which in turn determines the cutting efficiency was analyzed for various types of surgical bits. Based on our results and previously published data from the literature an optimized drill bit was designed with a split point, a point angle of 118 deg, a parabolic flute, and a helix angle of 36 deg and its performance was compared with other existing surgical drill bits. For drilling in compact bone, the new design decreased the thrust load by 45 percent an the peak temperature rise by 41 percent. Similar improvements were also recorded for drilling bone cement. The time of drilling a bone cortex was also significantly reduced and "walking" on the curved bone surface was eliminated and dimensional tolerance on hole sizes was improved. The new design is likely to reduce the time of surgery and also minimize the tissue damage.

Abstract
Room temperature compression creep and stress relaxation behaviour of normal as well as carbon fibre reinforced bone cement was studied and their properties compared. It was observed that increased deformation due to creep in 24 h was about 70% of the initial strain (due to applied constant stress fo 10.5 MN/m2) for normal PMMA and this could be reduced to 45% of the initial strain by carbon fibre reinforcement. Surgical grade PMMA, when subjected to 1% constant strain, showed an average stress-relaxation by 24% in eight hours. Percentage of stress-relaxation was somewhat more for carbon fibre reinforced bone cement even though the level of stress was much higher compared to normal PMMA.

Abstract
Polydisperse proteoglycan subunit from bovine proximal humeral articular cartilage has been separated into a series of relatively monodisperse fractions which have been chemically and physically characterized. The proteoglycan subunit species of the lowest molecular weight contains the least chondroitin sulfate and had an amino acid composition relatively low in serine and glycine and relatively high in cysteine, methionine, and aspartic acid, almost identical to that of the hyaluronic acid-binding region of proteoglycan subunit isolated by Heinegard and Hascall (Heinegard, D., and Hascall, V.C. (1974) J. Biol. Chem. 249, 4250-4256). The molecular weight of proteoglycan subunit increases in proportion to its chondroitin sulfate content. As the molecular weight and chondroitin sulfate content of proteoglycan subunit increase, there is a parallel increase in the serine and glycine contents, and a decrease in the cysteine, methionine, and aspartic acid contents of proteoglycan subunit core protein. The pattern of polydispersity observed strongly supports the concept that proteoglycan subunit core protein contains a hyaluronic acid-binding region of constant size and composition and a polysaccharide attachment region of variable length and composition, composed of repeating peptide sequences containing serine and glycine in equimolar amounts.

Abstract
Four bovine articular cartilages have been compared with regard to the chemical composition of the whole cartilages, the amount of proteoglycan selectively extracted with 3 M MGCl2 or with 3 M guanidine-HCl, and the compositions and physical properties of the isolated proteoglycans. The whole cartilages differ but slightly in composition. Occipital condylar cartilage, a thin cartilage from the smallest joint, contains 4% more collagen and proportionately less proteoglycan than proximal humeral, the thickest cartilage from the largest joint. Each cartilage contains a pool of proteoglycan that resists extraction with 3 M MgCl2 but is extracted with 3 M guanidine-HCl. The proteoglycan extracted from each cartilage with 3 M guanidine-HCl contains a high molecular weight proteoglycan-collagen complex demonstrated by analytical ultracentrifugation and by the turbidity of its visible and ultra-violet spectra. The four cartilages appear to differ most remarkably in the fraction of total proteoglycan extracted from each as proteoglycan-collagen complex.
