Abstract
From April, 1989 to January, 1990, we have been "inducing bronchial fistulae" in dogs by performing 10 lobectomies, 5 middle and 5 caudal, in both the right and the left lung. The bronchial stump was not sutured but closed by a "Tissucol-vicryl mesk" implant, which can be adapted to the size of the stump and is fully absorbed in the long term and replaced by a natural fibrous plug. The results seem to be fairly satisfactory: no dog died; all stumps--followed up a D10, D12... up to the 11th month--were obturated without complications, at least in these animals whose bronchi were normal and not infected. Bronchial fistulae still are a serious complication of lung resections, and while the smaller fistulae (2-3 mm) can be managed with biological glue delivered by simple endoscopy, severe fistulae--especially after pneumonectomy, above all in the right lung--often demand difficult, high-risk surgery. This points out to the interest of this small experimental series. Two conditions are essential to successfully implement this alternative procedure: 1) perfect sterilization of the excision pocket; a window is often required, which in addition has the advantage of facilitating the insertion and observation of the implant; 2) a high concentration of aprotinin (10,000 units) delaying the dissolution of the glue plug, thus allowing it to be integrated by the natural healing process.

Abstract
Male rats bearing implants of the Dunning rat prostatic carcinoma, R-3327, were used in a 42-day study to determine the effect of castration or orally administered flutamide (FL), DES (diethylstilbestrol) or the 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor, MK-906, on the growth of this androgen-responsive cancer. The rate of growth and final weights of the tumor and the ventral prostate (VP) were all reduced (P less than 0.05) by castration. Flutamide (25 mg/kg/day) significantly decreased tumor and VP weights in intact rats and castrates given 100 micrograms/day (SC) of testosterone propionate (TP) or dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP). It also significantly retarded tumor growth rate in TP- or DHTP-treated castrates and was marginally effective in intact animals. DES (100 micrograms/kg/day) reduced (P less than 0.05) tumor and VP weights of intact rats but did not significantly affect tumor growth rate or weight in castrates given TP or DHTP. These results indicated that the effect of DES on tumor growth is caused by its inhibition of the secretion or release of the gonadotropins necessary for testicular androgen production. MK-906 (25 mg/kg/day) affected neither the gross nor the histomorphology of the tumor in intact rats or castrates given TP or DHTP. Further, it caused no histological changes in the testes of intact rats. It did, however, significantly reduce VP weight in intact animals and TP-treated castrates but not in those given DHTP. This illustrates that the anti-androgenicity of MK-906 stems from its inhibition of DHT formation. The failure of MK-906 to influence tumor growth in the TP-treated castrates strongly suggests that the R-3327 tumor can respond to testosterone directly. If that is true, then its growth is unlikely to be affected by a pure 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor such as MK-906. In ancillary experiments, tumors from MK-906-treated animals were found to have reduced levels of DHT and, when assayed in vitro, to have a reduced capacity to convert [3H]-T to [3H]-DHT.

Abstract
Although the purported incidence of pacemaker syndrome according to the literature is only 5%-15%, this is based on a series of patients with VVI pacing. Increasing numbers of studies are being reported in which patients prefer the dual chamber mode despite little benefit being demonstrated on objective testing, suggesting that pacemaker syndrome may be more common than is generally reported. This study was designed to evaluate the reported symptoms in a series of patients programmed to both the VVI and one or more dual chamber modes. Forty unselected patients with dual chamber pacemakers were entered into a blind, randomized trial comparing the symptoms associated with VVI pacing to those associated with dual chamber pacing. Patients were randomized to either VVI or dual chamber pacing. At the end of 1 week, questionnaires rating 16 different symptoms were completed. Blood pressure, LV function, presence of ventriculoatrial conduction, and ability to override the pacemaker were evaluated. The pacemaker was then programmed to the other mode. Overall, 12 of 16 symptoms were significantly worse in the VVI as compared to dual chamber mode. The most highly significant (P less than 0.005) were shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, pulsations in the neck or abdomen, cough, and apprehension. Pacemaker syndrome was clinically recognized in 83% of patients paced in the VVI mode with 65% of patients experiencing moderate to severe symptoms. There were no readily identified clinical, hemodynamic, or electrophysiological parameters that predicted which patients would develop pacemaker syndrome. Thus, when patients have an opportunity to experience both pacing modes in close proximity to one another, there is a high incidence of pacemaker syndrome in the VVI mode.

Abstract
The in vitro activity of LY264826, a novel glycopeptide antibiotic produced by Amycolatopsis orientalis, was compared with those of vancomycin, teicoplanin, and oxacillin against 311 gram-positive clinical isolates from patients with cancer, LY264826 had lower MICs for 90% of isolates (MIC90) than vancomycin for all species tested. It was active against oxacillin-resistant isolates including Staphylococcus aureus (MIC90, 0.5 micrograms/ml), Staphylococcus haemolyticus (MIC90, 2.0 micrograms/ml), Enterococcus spp. (MIC90, 0.5 micrograms/ml), Bacillus cereus (MIC90, 0.25 micrograms/ml), and Corynebacterium jeikeium (MIC90, 0.12 micrograms/ml). For S. aureus, including oxacillin-resistant isolates, the MICs of LY264826 were similar to those of teicoplanin. For coagulase-negative staphylococci, however, LY264826 had MICs that were 4- to 32-fold lower than those of teicoplanin. Against most streptococcal species the activities of LY264826 and teicoplanin were similar. Bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus spp. and most Streptococcus pyogenes isolates was less than or equal to 1 dilution of the MIC. One isolate of S. pyogenes and all Enterococcus faecalis strains tested were tolerant of LY264826, with MBCs greater than or equal to 32-fold greater than the MICs. The addition of 50% human serum resulted in a significant increase in activity only against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Variations in pH from 6.4 to 8.4 and in inoculum from 10(3) to 10(7) CFU/ml did not significantly affect the activity of LY264826.

Abstract
The physical phenomenon of clathrate hydrate formation in protein-containing reversed micelles is described. Hydrate formation in reversed micelles is a method of adjusting the water to surfactant molar ratio, wo, which influences micellar size. Lipase and alpha-chymotrypsin encapsulated in large reversed micelles of high wo show significant enhancements in activity when the micelle size is reduced through hydrate formation. Alternate methods of micelle size adjustments also show enhancements in activity. The implications for improving the activity of such encapsulated enzymes recovered from fermentation media through phase transfer into reversed micelles are discussed.

Abstract
The in vitro activity of sparfloxacin, a new quinolone, was compared with those of ciprofloxacin and fleroxacin against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, greater than 90% of which were isolated from blood culture specimens of cancer patients. Sparfloxacin was extremely active against Acinetobacter species, Aeromonas hydrophila, Citrobacter diversus, Enterobacter species, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, Proteus vulgaris, and Serratia marcescens (inhibiting greater than 90% of these isolates at a concentration of 0.5 microgram/ml) and moderately active against Pseudomonas species, other Proteus species, and Citrobacter freundii. Sparfloxacin inhibited greater than 90% of staphylococci (including methicillin-resistant and coagulase-negative strains) at a concentration of 0.12 microgram/ml and greater than 90% of streptococci (including Streptococcus pneumoniae) at a concentration of 1.0 microgram/ml. It was also active against Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus species, and Corynebacterium jeikeium, organisms that have become fairly common in cancer patients.

Abstract
cis-Platinum (DDP) and cyclophosphamide are commonly used for the treatment of ovarian cancer; however, survival remains poor. The degree of cytotoxicity of the standard antineoplastic agents DDP, 4-hydroperoxy-cyclophosphamide (4-OH-CTX), mitomycin C (MITOM C), vincristine (VCR), etoposide (VP-16), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), cytosine arabinoside (ARA-C), and interferon (IF) in four representative ovarian cancer cell lines was studied using the ATP assay, which measures total cell kill. Cell lines CAOV-3, OVCAR-3, SKOV-3, and BG-1, which were derived from both pretreated and untreated patients, were exposed to six different concentrations for 90 min. On Day 7, intracellular ATP determinations were done. Sensitivity was defined as greater than or equal to 50% cell kill at 0.5 x peak plasma concentration as compared to controls. For 4-OH-CTX and ARA-C, 3 and 0.5 micrograms/ml were chosen as 0.5 x reference values. For each drug in each cell line, a highly reproducible dose-response relationship was observed. CAOV-3 cells were sensitive to all drugs except DDP, ARA-C, and IF, and OVCAR-3 cells to all except DDP and IF. SKOV-3 cells were resistant to all agents except VCR, and BG-1 cells to all except MITOM C and 5-FU. The apparent heterogeneic response to antineoplastic agents observed in the above cell lines underscores the importance of assessing individual patients' sensitivity profiles before treatment.

Abstract
A study of medication compliance, side effects, and clinical change with the use of antidepressants in 32 Southeast Asian refugee patients seen at an urban mental health center is reported. Patients met criteria for either major depressive episode, posttraumatic stress disorder, or both. Only five of the 32 patients who stated that they were taking their medications regularly had antidepressant blood levels in the therapeutic range. Another 10 patients had subtherapeutic levels and the remaining 17 had undetectable blood levels. Patients with therapeutic blood levels had fewer side effects (p = 0.049) than patients with undetectable blood levels. Blood levels tended (p = 0.070) to be correlated with clinical improvement. The authors discuss cultural attitudes of Southeast Asian refugee patients toward medication use and side effects that appear to influence medication compliance.

Abstract
The regional distribution and cellular localization of mRNA coding for the serotonin 1C receptor were investigated in tissue sections of mouse and rat brain by in situ hybridization histochemistry. Several 32P-labelled riboprobes derived from mouse genomic clones were used. The serotonin 1C receptor binding sites were visualized autoradiographically and quantified using [3H]mesulergine as ligand, in the presence of spiperone to block serotonin 1C receptors. Strong hybridization signal was observed in the choroid plexus of all brain ventricles. High levels of hybridization were also seen in the anterior olfactory nucleus, pyriform cortex, amygdala, some thalamic nuclei, especially the lateral habenula, the CA3 area of the hippocampal formation, the cingulate cortex, some components of the basal ganglia and associated areas, particularly the nucleus subthalamicus and the substantia nigra. The midbrain and brainstem showed moderate levels of hybridization. The distribution of the serotonin 1C receptor mRNA corresponded well to that of the serotonin 1C receptors. The highest levels of serotonin 1C receptor binding were observed in the choroid plexus. In addition, significant levels of the serotonin 1C receptor binding were seen in the anterior olfactory nucleus, pyriform cortex, nucleus accumbens, ventral aspects of the striatum, paratenial and paracentral thalamic nuclei, amygdaloid body and substantia nigra pars reticulata. The cingulate and retrosplenial cortices as well as the caudal aspects of the hippocampus (CA3) were also labelled. Binding in brainstem and medulla was low and homogeneously distributed. No significant binding was seen in the habenular and subthalamic nuclei. Similar findings were obtained in rat brain. These results demonstrate that, in addition to their enrichment in the choroid plexus, the serotonin 1C receptor mRNA and binding sites are heterogeneously distributed in the rodent brain and thus could be involved in the regulation of many different brain functions. The combination of in situ hybridization histochemistry with receptor autoradiography opens the possibility of examining the regulation of the serotonin 1C receptor synthesis after pharmacological or physiological alterations.

Abstract
Some patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) have elevated plasma cortisol concentrations and show failure to suppress cortisol secretion upon administration of dexamethasone (DEX), yet they do not have Cushingoid features. To study whether this represents glucocorticoid (GC) resistance, [3H]-DEX-binding assays were used to measure, in vitro, the GC receptor affinity (1/Kd) and number (Bmax) in mononuclear leukocytes of 11 MDD patients and 15 control subjects. No receptor abnormalities were detected in the MDD group; thus any cellular defect leading to a lack of responsiveness to GC in the MDD patients, if present, probably lies beyond the initial receptor binding. DEX (1.0 mg orally) was administered to study in vivo GC receptor down-regulation. Compared to the control group, fewer depressed subjects down-regulated Bmax after DEX. By paired t-test, Bmax decreased significantly in the control group but not in the depressed group. Receptor number on the control day did not correlate significantly with the degree of receptor down-regulation, severity of depression or cortisol concentrations across all the subjects. These results do not lend support to previous reports suggesting that GC resistance in MDD results from a GC receptor-binding abnormality, and they emphasize the importance of considering receptor studies in the context of GC-mediated cell processes in order to identify the exact cellular defect(s) leading to GC resistance.

Abstract
The authors report on 404 Southeast Asian refugees seen at a community clinic. Approximately three-quarters of these patients met DSM-III criteria for major depressive episode, and 14% had posttraumatic stress disorder. Complaints of pain and sleep disturbances were the predominant presenting symptoms. Most of the men were married, but more than 40% of the women were widowed. Between 15% and 30% of the patients reported specific traumatic experiences either in their homeland or during their escape. Widowhood and such traumatic experiences were positively correlated with more symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Abstract
A recently developed detection principle for gamma rays offers the prospect of improving the performance of positron emission tomographic scanners. This detection principle is based on the use of BaF2 scintillator and photosensitive wire chambers. We present technical results obtained with a prototype detector. It is shown that the impact point of the gamma ray can be determined with a precision of a few mm and that the detection efficiency is 60% with a time resolution of 10 ns (FWHM). A scanner based on the new principle is described and its anticipated performance discussed.

Abstract
Topical beta-blocking agents have been associated with adverse central nervous system (CNS) effects, including depression, emotional lability, and sexual dysfunction. Two studies were done to determine if patients who develop CNS effects while using timolol maleate would improve with betaxolol hydrochloride. In one study, 18 patients with CNS symptoms during timolol therapy were switched to betaxolol. Sixteen of the 18 patients noted symptomatic improvement with betaxolol. The second study involved seven patients with CNS symptoms during timolol therapy who were entered into a double-masked cross-over study. In two patients CNS symptoms resolved with betaxolol; in three patients symptoms improved; and in one patient symptoms worsened with betaxolol. Although factors influencing beta-blocker activity in the CNS are not well understood, there may be some advantage to a selective agent.

Abstract
Sera from 714 mentally retarded carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen were screened for alpha fetoprotein (AFP) by monoclonal radioimmunoassay. Serum AFP levels were less than 20 mcg/L in 708 (99.2%) carriers. One 29-year-old carrier with normal liver function had serum AFP level of 1500 mcg/L, which increased to 12,500 mcg/L after 72 days. She died of multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with cirrhosis. Five other carriers with serum AFP levels between 20 and 165 mcg/L are alive without clinical HCC. No correlation was found between serum AFP level and race, age, sex, Down's syndrome, serum alanine aminotransferase level, and hepatitis B e antigen positivity. Single cross-sectional serum AFP screening by itself is not sufficient for early diagnosis of HCC.

Abstract
Thirty-five women (mean age 52 years, mean parity 3) were evaluated consecutively for urinary incontinence. Stability of the bladder was evaluated by standing provocative water urethrocystometry, using a microtip pressure transducer and a multichannel electrophysiologic recorder. Cystometry was repeated immediately after emptying of the bladder. Second cystometry (standing provocative) was performed using a fetal cardiotocographic monitor for pressure recording. The simple cystometry (using the cardiotocograph technique) was very sensitive when evaluating women with a stable bladder (n = 25) and less sensitive when detecting bladder instability (n = 10). We conclude that the use of this simple technique is a viable option if urodynamic equipment is unavailable. There is no need for further evaluation in patients with findings of a stable bladder, but if bladder instability is detected, further in-depth evaluation is required.

Abstract
We reviewed records of all persons dying between 1979 and 1986 in eight California institutions for the mentally retarded. Autopsies had been done in 71% of the 1,181 deaths. Nine deaths were due to hepatocellular carcinoma, which invariably developed in carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and was fatal within four months of diagnosis. The mean age at death was 32.7 years. The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in HBsAg carriers was 140 times greater than in the US population. Persistent hepatitis B infection was probably etiologically related to hepatocellular carcinoma in this population, which is relatively free of exposure to other hepatocarcinogens.

Abstract
During three seasons, 36 samples of foods served to mentally retarded clients with a high incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma were analyzed for aflatoxin. Aflatoxin was not detected (less than 5 ppb) by thin-layer liquid chromatography in 35 food samples containing peanuts, corn, wheat or milk. One peanut butter sample contained 20 ppb aflatoxin. Aflatoxin content of these foods was at or below the level permitted by the Food and Drug Administration. Aflatoxin is probably not responsible for liver disease in this population.

Abstract
The latissimus dorsi and the "serrato-rhomboid" complex are the muscles most often involved in present-day thoracotomies for lung surgery. The present anatomic study emphasizes: the continuity between the serratus anterior and the rhomboid levator scapulae mass as a wide muscular sheet with a deep common fascia, extending the serrato-thoracic space (of Gillis) to the vertebral column as the rhomboserrato-thoracic space (the levator scapulae is situated higher up, above the ordinary thoracotomy); the presence of a "composite fascia" in the posterior angle between the seratus anterior and the rhomboid; the long costal attachment area and the presence of two differently oriented layers for the muscular digitations of the middle and inferior parts of the serratus anterior. With a rich vascular supply from multiple sources, the serratus anterior and latissimus dorsi are two large flat muscles with a single longitudinal nervous pedicle proceeding from the brachial plexus. To avoid esthetic (winged scapula) and functional sequelae, it is imperative to safeguard this single innervation as far as possible : by halting division of the serratus anterior before reaching its neurovascular pedicle in lateral or anterolateral thoracotomy, and by transecting the latissimus dorsi very low down in standard postero-lateral thoracotomy. The other muscles are simply freed and retracted.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the effects of altered pH on cellular aerobic energy metabolism in the immature and adult rat cerebral cortex. Cerebral cortical slice respiration was measured polarographically in acid and alkaline media. In separate experiments, the extracellular pH was changed by altering the HCO3- concentration or the intracellular pH and extracellular pH were changed by altering the CO2. Respiratory rates and oxidative phosphorylation in adult rat cerebral mitochondria also were measured in media with an altered pH. Increased intracellular pH inhibited respiratory rates in cortical slices from immature rats more than in tissue from adults. Decreasing the pH to 6.7 produced no changes in respiration in mature cortical slices and moderate inhibition of immature tissue respiration. In cerebral mitochondria, altered pH caused inhibition of State 3 respiration, respiratory control ratios, and ADP/O ratios. These changes were greater and occurred with smaller pH changes in the alkaline compared to the acid direction. From the results of these studies, we conclude that brain cellular respiration is not affected by moderate decreases in intracellular pH. With increased pH, there is inhibition of cellular and mitochondrial respiration, which may be the mechanism for the rise in lactic acid previously observed to result from hypocarbia in vivo.

Abstract
Hardy-Zuckerman 2 feline sarcoma virus (HZ2-FeSV), isolated from a multicentric feline fibrosarcoma is a replication-defective acute transforming feline retrovirus which originated by transduction of feline c-abl sequences with feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and is known to encode a 110-kilodalton gag-abl fusion protein with tyrosine-specific protein kinase activity (P. Besmer, W. D. Hardy, E. E. Zuckerman, P. J. Bergold, L. Lederman, and H. W. Snyder, Nature (London) 303:825-828, 1983). The nucleotide sequence of the abl segment in the HZ2-FeSV genome was determined and compared with the murine and human v-abl and c-abl sequences. The predicted transforming protein consists of 344 amino acids (aa) of FeLV gag origin, 439 aa of abl origin, and at least 200 aa of FeLV pol origin (p110gag-abl-pol). The 1,317-base-pair HZ2-FeSV v-abl segment (fv-abl) corresponds to 5' abl sequences which include the region known to specify the protein kinase domain. The 5' 189 base pairs of fv-abl correspond to 5' c-abl sequences not contained in Abelson murine leukemia virus (MuLV) v-abl. The mouse c-abl exon which contains these segments was identified, and its nucleotide sequence was determined. Comparison of the predicted amino acid sequence of fv-abl with those of Abelson MuLV v-abl and c-abl revealed five aa differences. The 5' junction between FeLV and abl was found to involve a preferred region in FeLV gag p30 (P. Besmer, J. E. Murphy, P. C. George, F. H. Qiu, P. J. Bergold, L. Lederman, H. W. Snyder, D. Brodeur, E. E. Zuckerman, and W. D. Hardy, Nature (London) 320:415-421, 1986). A six-base homology exists at the recombination site between the parental FeLV and the c-abl sequences. The 3' junction between fv-abl and FeLV pol predicts an in-frame fusion of fv-abl and FeLV pol. A transformed cell line containing a truncated gag-abl-pol protein, p85, that lacks most of the FeLV pol sequences was obtained by transfection of NIH 3T3 mouse cells. This result implies that the pol sequences of the p110gag-abl-pol protein are dispensable for fibroblast transformation. To assess whether the fv-abl segment specifies the unique biological properties of HZ2-FeSV, we constructed a Moloney MuLV-based version of HZ2-FeSV, Mo-MuLV(fv-abl), in which the fv-abl sequences were contained in a genetic context similar to that in HZ2-FeSV.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
Analysis of the first 50 clinical cases confirmed conclusions of experimental studies in large animals with respect to the use of absorbable synthetic clips formed of lactomer and polydioxanone. The advantages of clips when compared with ligatures include rapidity and simplicity of use and ease of insertion, even in regions difficult to approach surgically with the fingers. The advantages of clips of the absorbable synthetic type over conventional metallic material are: safety and reliability due to their locking system and the conservation of sufficient residual resistance, improved behavior in biologic media, radio-transparency and total inertia in magnetic fields compatible with postoperative radiation and modern medical imaging procedures (CT scan, IRM), and finally progressive resorption predictable by simple hydrolysis and then total disappearance after 6 to 7 months. With staplers of the TA and GIA type these clips make sutures and ligatures during lung resection surgery entirely automatic.

Abstract
In this study we have examined the behaviour and the localization of the fucose-binding protein (FBP) in boar spermatozoa during ionophore induced acrosome reaction (AR) by means of normal TEM and specimen preparation in toto. During early stages of AR the FBP is first localized at the border between equatorial segment and anterior acrosome. With the propagation of the AR the FBP is dramatically expressed and visible over the entire surface of the acrosome and equatorial segment. TEM pictures of this stages show that the FBP is associated with the OAM. At later stages of AR, when acrosomal ghost formation occur, the FBP is associated with the acrosomal ghost, and equatorial segment and to a very low degree also with the IAM. It is concluded from this data that the FBP is responsible for the specific binding of the ghost-sperm unit to the zona pellucida.

Abstract
Anatomical data related to the thoracotomies performed most frequently in lung surgery are described in some detail: continuity between serratus anterior and levator scapulae as a vide muscular sheet possessing a common deep aponeurosis (thoracolumbar fascia) extending Gilis' space to the vertebral column as the levator scapulae-thoraci space; presence of a "composite aponeurosis" in the posterior angle between serratus anterior and levator scapulae, covering the 8th rib triangle or triangle of auscultation; long costal insertion area and presence of two differently orientated muscle layers for the digitations, particularly of apical bundle. Supplied by a rich vascularization of multiple sources, the serratus anterior and latissimus dorsi are two muscles with single longitudinal nerve pedicles derived from brachial plexus. It is certainly the denervation which is responsible for the distal atrophy of these muscles "sectioned on the right of the selected ribs" following conventional thoracotomy. To avoid esthetic and functional sequelae this innervation must be preserved as far as possible by: interrupting division of serratus anterior anterior to long thoracic nerve and avoiding inclusion of axillary border of latissimus dorsi during lateral thoracotomy; sectioning the latissimus dorsi as low as possible--the other muscles being simply freed and inclined--during lateral thoracotomy.

Abstract
A retrovirus [lymphoadenopathy-associated virus, human T-cell leukemia virus type III, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related virus] suspected of causing AIDS has been isolated recently. The detection of exposure to this retrovirus in donors of various blood products is important to prevent transmission of the disease from these donors to recipients. In the majority of cases, the detection of antibodies directed against either the viral core protein, a Mr approximately equal to 24,000 protein termed p24 gag, or the viral envelope antigen is proof of previous viral infection. Thus, we have expressed the p24 gag antigen in Escherichia coli in order to produce a diagnostic reagent for the detection of virus exposure. The bacterially synthesized antigen reacts with human and rabbit antisera directed against the native p24 gag protein in both electrophoretic transfer blot assay and ELISA. In addition, the use of bacterially produced antigens for ELISAs gave results that were comparable to those obtained by using antigens isolated from the virus.

Abstract
Mouse mammary epithelial cells, of the normal murine mammary gland (NMuMG) cell line, bear a heparan sulfate-rich proteoglycan (HSPG) on their surfaces. A hybridoma (281-2) secreting a monoclonal antibody that recognizes this HSPG was produced by fusion of SP-2/0 myeloma cells with spleen cells from rats immunized with NMuMG cells. The 281-2 monoclonal antibody is directed against the core protein of the cell surface HSPG, as demonstrated by (a) recognition of the isolated proteoglycan but not its glycosaminoglycan chains, (b) co-localization of 281-2-specific antigen and radioactive cell surface HSPG on gradient polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and on isopycnic centrifugation, and (c) abolition of immunofluorescent staining of the NMuMG cell surface by the intact, but not the protease-digested ectodomain of the cell surface HSPG. The antibody is specific for cell surface HSPG and does not recognize the HSPG that accumulates extracellularly beneath the basal cell surface. Therefore, the 281-2 antibody may be used to isolate the cell surface HSPG and to explore its distribution in tissues.

Abstract
In the liver, drugs with phenolic groups can be converted to sulfate or glucuronide conjugates and are then transported into bile or back into the bloodstream. The mechanism for transport of drugs and drug conjugates from the hepatocytes into the blood at the sinusoidal side of the cell are not well defined. In the case of carrier-mediated transport of these strongly polar conjugates, saturability of transport and mutual competition between structurally related compounds would be anticipated. This competitive aspect was investigated by using two organic anions, dibromosulfophthalein (DBSP) and harmol sulfate. The latter compound was generated by the hepatocytes from harmol, which was continuously infused into the rat in vivo and in isolated perfused rat livers. In addition we loaded the perfused rat livers with preformed harmol sulfate and studied its efflux rate to the perfusate as influenced by DBSP. In steady state, about 80% of harmol was sulfated and 20% was glucuronidated. Harmol sulfate was mainly excreted in the urine, the glucuronide was equally excreted in urine and bile. DBSP lowered the urinary excretion of harmol sulfate by about 30% which was due to a decrease in plasma concentration. However, renal clearance of harmol sulfate (3.2 +/- 0.2 ml/min) was unchanged. At the same time DBSP doubled the biliary clearance of harmol sulfate (1.0 +/- 0.1 and 2.2 +/- 0.2 ml/min in controls and DBSP studies respectively). DBSP decreased glucuronide excretion both in urine and bile. The increase in biliary output and decrease in urinary excretion of harmol sulfate is explained by competitive interaction between the organic anion DBSP and harmol sulfate at the sinusoidal level. Efflux experiments in single pass perfused isolated livers showed a clear decrease of harmol sulfate transport from liver into plasma by DBSP and provided evidence for such an inhibitory phenomenon (t 1/2 of efflux was 3.58 +/- 0.21 compared with 2.46 +/- 0.07 min for controls). These results indicate that organic anion transport from the hepatocyte into the blood stream is very likely carrier-mediated. A decrease in renal output of drug conjugates therefore may not only be due to a decrease in the conjugation process but also to a lower liver to blood transport rate which at the same time may produce a higher biliary output.

Abstract
From the beginning of this decade, two new, 2nd generation, resorbable synthetic materials--polydioxanone and lactomer--have been able to be molded into clips which, in contrast to metallic clips, are fitted with an original locking system preventing any slipping, either transversal or longitudinal, on the vessels. An experimental study was conducted to confirm their great reliability and perfect safety on large vessels (up to 8-9 mm) of large laboratory animals--both pulmonary and systemic vessels. Positive results justified their application to pulmonary vessels in humans during surgery, the pulmonary vessel being at a much lower pressure than in the main circulatory system. These new clips possess the advantages of metallic clips and resorbable synthetic threads without their inconveniences: rapidity, simplicity and ease of application, radio-transparency and complete inertia in magnetic fields enabling radiotherapy and modern postoperative investigations (scanner, NMR...) to be carried out.

Abstract
In order to test the importance of olfaction in the avoidance of GABA-containing diets by intact rats, olfactory bulbectomized and sham-operated control rats were allowed to choose between a low protein control diet and this diet supplemented with 2.5% GABA; the specificity of the response was examined by also testing for responses to other amino acids. Both groups of rats markedly avoided the GABA diet initially; the bulbectomized rats later tended to increase their intake of this diet. The bulbectomized rats chose similar amounts from the control diet and one supplemented with alanine whereas the control rats ultimately strongly preferred the latter diet. Both groups only moderately avoided a threonine-supplemented diet. The results suggest that (1) the odor of GABA is not critical in the avoidance of diets containing this amino acid; and (2) patterns of food selection from diets containing GABA differ from choices from diets containing other small neutral amino acids such as alanine or threonine.

Abstract
It is shown that the double-layer interaction between two symmetrically parallel red blood cells depends largely on their shape and elasticity. Various shapes are examined, including the realistic shape of a biconcave discocyte with an elastic membrane. It is found that changes in the shape and the elasticity of the erythrocyte may result in orders of magnitude differences in the forces and energies of pair interaction.

Abstract
In 738 patients, the stapler-suturing methods were used in 2 main areas of concern: closure of the major hilar broncho-vascular structures (for smaller pulmonary vessels, we use absorbable ligating clips: Absolok from Ethicon and Polysurgiclip from USSC), suture of the lung parenchyma. Regarding pedicular sutures, our rate of bronchial fistula is 1,0% (or 4,4% if only pneumonectomies are taken into account: 1,4 on the left and 7,7 on the right). These rates are compared with those gathered from the literature, with emphasis on the right main bronchus. Regarding parenchymal sutures, we place TA and GIA on collapsed parenchyma for achieving a wide range of either intralobar or translobar procedures. We lay emphasis on: the conventional segmentectomies with stapling of the intersegmental surface, and the newer and more economical "non réglées" transsegmental resections in which the surgeon is anymore limited by segmental frontiers. The control of blood and air leakage from the cut surface is quite satisfactory, reducing significanthy the postoperative morbidity. For both major pedicular structures and fragile lung parenchyma, the stapler-suturing methods are very reliable and provide a quicker, simpler, safer, easier and more economical surgery in lung resections.

A fucose binding protein was detected in boar spermatozoa by means of a specifically developed modified enzyme-linked-lectin-assay using glycosylated peroxidase derivatives. The distribution of the fucose binding protein was assessed by means of fluorescence microscopy with fluoresceinyl-glycosylated peroxidase. Fucose binding was particularly prominent at the apical region of the sperm head. In order to gain more insight into the precise localization of the carbohydrate binding protein electron microscopical studies were performed using fucosyl peroxidase coupled to colloidal gold. In ultrathin sections as well as in specimens prepared in toto for TEM an intensive binding of fucosylperoxidase-colloidal gold was predominantly found at the apical part of the acrosome appearing as a crescent-like area. In some cases this binding pattern was replaced by a triangle-like intensive labelling at the equatorial segment as revealed clearly by specimens prepared in toto. By SDS-PAGE of the SDS-extractable sperm-proteins, followed by transblotting to nitrocellulose and visualization with the fucosylperoxidase by enzymatic amplification with 4-chloro-1-naphthol mainly one protein with the reduced molecular weight of approximately 53 kdal and some small proteins with apparent molecular weights less than 20 kdal was found to be responsible for the fucose-binding ability of porcine spermatozoa.

Abstract
Anatomical study of the costoclavicular space, with approach via inferolateral axillary route, allowing resection of the first rib. With the patient in the semisupine position, lifting the arm to the zenith allows the costoclavicular space to be opened widely and separation of the plane of the first rib from the neurovascular structures of the lateral wall of the axillary pyramid. In the first part of our work, we study successively the bony frame and its anatomical variations, the muscular frame and its anomalies, the cervical pleura and its associated fibromembranous complex. The second part is a succinct summary of the different stages of transaxillary resection of the first rib, with mention of the operative risks and landmarks in this approach.

Abstract
The manpower and operating cost of home-based treatment was compared with the manpower and operating cost of hospital-based treatment during the second year and at the end of two years of treatment. Of the 155 patients destined to receive inpatient treatment, 76 were randomly assigned to home treatment, 79 to hospital treatment. The two groups were similar as to important social, demographic, and clinical characteristics, including psychiatric diagnosis. The manpower and operating cost of treatment, measured in two ways, was similar in the two groups during the second year. However, over the 2-year period hospital-based treatment of patients in each of the three diagnostic groups was more expensive than home-based treatment. Also, regardless of which treatment was given, the cost of treating schizophrenics was higher than the cost of treating manic-depressives which, in turn, was higher than the cost of treating individuals with depressive neurosis. Treatment failures were discussed. Over the 2-year period, failures in home-based treatment accounted for 39.1% of the total manpower and operating cost of home-based treatment, calculated according to Cost Model 1, and for 67.1% of the cost calculated according to Cost Model 2. The concept of failure in hospital-based treatment is also discussed.

Abstract
Respiration was measured polarographically in primary cultures enriched with cerebellar granule neurons or cerebral cortical neurons. The basal respiratory rate, measured on the sixth day after culturing, was 12.00 natom equiv. O/mg protein/min for the cortical neurons and 12.70 natom equiv. O/mg protein/min for the granule neurons. Maximal stimulation by 2,4-dinitrophenol produced a 20-40% increase over the basal rate for both neuronal types. Oligomycin inhibited neuronal basal respiration by 45%. These respiratory rates in neurons from primary culture are markedly lower than those measured in astrocytes grown under similar conditions.

Abstract
The rat pup fed inorganic lead has been studied extensively as an animal model of human lead encephalopathy. As in man, the sensitivity of the brain to lead toxicity is age-dependent. Pups given daily lead feedings for one week beginning in the first week of life show pathologic changes (i.e., hemorrhage, edema, and neuronal necrosis) throughout the brain including the cerebral cortex and cerebellum. Pups begun on daily lead feedings for two weeks between 10-18 days of age show similar pathologic changes almost entirely confined to the cerebellum. Pups receiving very large quantities of lead for two weeks beginning at 20 or 24 days of age develop only minimal edema or no changes by light microscopy. We have proposed that the effects of lead on cellular aerobic energy metabolism are important in the pathogenesis of the encephalopathy in the developing brain. Early in the course of lead feedings begun at 14 days of age, isolated cerebellar mitochondria show a loss of respiratory control. During the second week of lead feedings, respiration with NAD-linked substrates is inhibited in cerebellar mitochondria, but not in cerebral mitochondria, from these animals. Cerebral mitochondrial respiration in pups fed lead from birth also is inhibited while both cerebral and cerebellar mitochondrial respiration in lead-fed adults is not affected. Isolated brain mitochondria exposed to lead in vitro show similar changes; an initial respiratory stimulation (probably reflecting an energy-coupled uptake of lead) and a secondary inhibition of dehydrogenases located in the mitochondrial matrix. Lead also may compete with calcium for brain mitochondrial carrier or binding sites. During maturation, the brain appears to become resistant to lead toxicity by sequestering lead away from the mitochondrial site of action. This hypothesis is based upon the observations that: 1. the in vitro effects of lead are the same in immature and mature cerebellar mitochondria; 2. the cerebral and cerebellar lead concentrations are the same in immature encephalopathic and mature encephalopathy-resistant lead-fed animals and; 3. cerebellar mitochondria from animals fed lead from 14 days of age contain much more lead than cerebral mitochondria from these animals and cerebellar mitochondria from lead-fed adults. This hypothesis is supported further by the results of recent electron microscopic and elemental microprobe studies of lead distribution in the brains of animals fed lead beginning at 14-18 days of age.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
The delto-pectoral portion of V. Cephalica was dissected 189 times during surgery and 74 times on cadavers. In 8 out of 10 cases the disposition was of the classical type and the diameter was wide enough to allow catheterization with a 3,4 mm catheter. In 2 out of 10 cases the vein was absent or toothin. This anomaly was most often unilateral with a normal disposition on the other side in 2/3 of cases.
