Abstract
Total duration of breastfeeding and of exclusive breastfeeding was studied and compared in 99 childhood cancer cases and 90 controls. The difference between the average duration of breastfeeding in cases and controls was significant (p < 0.05), but when average duration of exclusive breastfeeding was compared in cases and controls the difference was highly significant (p < 0.001). In lymphoma cases and controls the difference between the average duration of breastfeeding was moderately significant (p < 0.01). However, when average duration of exclusive breastfeeding was compared in lymphoma cases and controls the difference was highly significant (p < 0.001). When other cancer groups and controls were compared with respect to their total duration of breastfeeding and duration of exclusive breastfeeding the differences when insignificant (p > 0.05). Cases and controls were not different with respect to their age, sex, birth year, birth order, age and educational status of mothers, smoking of fathers and socioeconomic status. However, a positive family history of cancer was obtained in 4 (4%) of cases whereas in controls it was obtained in only 1 (1.1%).

Abstract
Human actinomycosis may pose a diagnostic problem at times and is often mistaken for a neoplasm. A thirty-five year old male was clinically diagnosed as a case of carcinoma of the right maxillary sinus on the basis of history, clinical presentation and radiologic findings. Tissue biopsy was negative for malignancy on three consecutive occasions. Microscopic examination showed bits of granulation tissue and fragments of filamentous structures. On microbiological examination, Actinomyces israelii was isolated and fungus culture was negative. Long term Penicillin treatment caused disappearance of all signs and symptoms. The report highlights the importance of bearing in mind the fact that certain rare, chronic, suppurative granulomatous infections, like actinomycosis, may mimic malignancy.

Abstract
A modified H-reflex, known as R-1 response, was recorded in healthy subjects by averaging 200 responses from the moderately contracting tibialis anterior muscle (TA) after repetitive submaximal stimulation of common peroneal nerve. Physiological changes to different modes of stimulation and recording were studied and normative data obtained at the most reliable parameters. Subsequently, the test is applied to 36 patients with clinical and myelographic evidences of L5 or L4-L5 radicular compression (with or without S1 radicular compression). Increasing the force of muscle contraction resulted in increase in amplitude up to a certain limit, with no change in latency. Increasing the current from subliminal to submaximal stimulation caused initial increase and subsequent fall in the amplitude without change in the latency. The change in the stimulus frequency from 0.5 to 3 Hz did not alter latency or amplitude but the higher frequencies sometimes did. On changing the position of the foot from plantarflexed to dorsiflexed, an increase in amplitude and reduction in duration of the response was noted. Fifty subjects were studied using stimulus intensity just enough to produce 200-400 microV M-response, stimulus duration of 1.0 msec, stimulus rate of 3 Hz and the muscle force sufficient to keep the foot in complete dorsiflexion. The tibialis anterior R-1 response (TAR-1) could be recorded reliably from both legs in all the subjects. The take-off point was sharp and in no subject was there any difficulty in measuring the latency to onset point. On repeating the test, the onset point of the response was superimposable. Latency showed linear correlation with height and age. Among the patients, 21 out of 25 cases of unilateral (84.0%) and 10 out of 11 cases of bilateral (90.9%) radicular compression had abnormal findings. Abnormalities included significant a right-left latency difference within the normal range of absolute latencies, unilateral or bilateral prolongation of latency to onset point and attenuation or absence of the response. It was concluded that the TAR-1 is an important and reliable test for the study of functional integrity of L4-L5 spinal segments in lumbo-sacral sensorimotor root lesions.

Abstract
Free radical-mediated reperfusion injury has been demonstrated in ischemic neonatal bowel necrosis, but the mechanism of injury remains elusive. To determine whether such an injury can be prevented, 76 weaning rats were studied to test the effects of deferoxamine, an iron chelator, in postischemic injury. Group I (N = 20) had a sham laparotomy without vascular occlusion. Group II (N = 21) was subjected to 90 min of superior mesenteric artery occlusion prior to reperfusion. Group III (N = 35) received deferoxamine 15 mg/kg intravenous prereperfusion, in addition to ischemia and reperfusion as in group II. Survival profiles for each group were determined and a scale of pathologic severity was applied and compared. Group I had 100% long-term survival and group II, 14%. Group III had an overall survival of 28% and demonstrated a prolonged postreperfusion survival profile (P < 0.002) compared to group II. Histology was nearly identical to human necrotizing enterocolitis in degrees of bowel wall destruction and relative paucity of neutrophils. Group III showed a significant reduction in severity of injury compared to group II (P < 0.003). We conclude that neonatal bowel ischemia conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis may be reperfusion injuries wherein free iron plays an important role in tissue injury. Administration of an iron chelating agent under such conditions has a beneficial effect on survival and histology.

Abstract
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to study the presence of gene deletion (the most prominent type of mutations) in some families afflicted by Duchenne muscular dystrophy/Becker muscular dystrophy (DMD/BMD). The results clearly demonstrate deletion in the central part of the DMD gene in two of the three families studied. This information can be useful for genetic counselling with particular reference to prenatal diagnosis and carrier analysis.

Abstract
Giant cell tumours (GCT) are rare in the skull bones. In the cranium the sphenoid bone is the most common site. The petrous bone is a very uncommon location for such tumours. The chance location of GCT at the base of the skull makes total surgery difficult and hazardous. A case of GCT of the petrous bone is presented. The clinical course in the patient and role of primary radiotherapy in GCT in such an unusual site is discussed.

Abstract
A 57 year old male presented with episodic behavioural abnormalities and loss of consciousness for 2 years. His fasting blood glucose was 20 mg/dl and corresponding insulin level 119 uU/ml. His EEG showed intermittent rhythmic delta activity. Abdominal CT scan revealed an enhancing mass in the tail of the pancreas and secondaries in the liver. After distal pancreatectomy, resection of the left lobe of the liver and chemotherapy, the hypoglycaemic spells subsided. Histopathology revealed an islet cell tumour with metastases in the liver. Episodic neurobehavioural dysfunction should alert towards the possibility of hypoglycaemia.

Abstract
Vertebral haemangiomas are slowly growing benign tumours and are usually asymptomatic. They rarely cause symptoms and signs related to cord compression. Larger lesions create significant problems during surgery because of haemorrhage and vascular supply crucial to spinal cord function. In such severely symptomatic vertebral haemangiomas, radiation therapy has been tried and good results obtained, especially in terms of good functional recovery. We have treated 17 patients (including nine paraplegic patients) with radiotherapy (Co-60). Treatment was given by single posterior field, encompassing the involved area with a dose of 35-40 Gy in 3 to 4 weeks (five fractions per week). All patients with pain and tenderness were relieved completely (87.5%) or partially (12.5%). Similarly patients with numbness and paresis showed either complete (66.7%) or partial response (33.3%) from symptoms on follow-up. Out of nine paraplegic patients six (66.6%) had recovered completely, one (11.2%) partially and two (22.2%) had no response. The two patients who did not show any marked relief, had paraplegia of longer duration (more than 6 months). Our study indicates that severely symptomatic vertebral haemangioma can be successfully treated by radiation therapy and it can be chosen as first line of treatment with an optimum dose of 35-40 Gy in 3 to 4 weeks.

Abstract
A new surface technique for the conduction study of the lower intercostal nerves has been developed and applied to 30 normal subjects. The problem of the short available nerve segment of the intercostal nerves and the bizzare compound motor action potential (CMAP) of inconsistent latency while recording over the intercostal muscles, is overcome by applying recording electrodes over the rectus abdominis muscle and stimulating the nerves at two points at a fair distance away. With the use of multiple recording sites over the rectus abdominis, the motor points for different intercostal nerves were delineated. CMAP of reproducible latencies and waveforms with sharp take-off points were obtained. Conduction velocity of the intercostal nerves could be determined.

Abstract
In a previous report, it was shown that erythrocyte membranes from mice with muscular dystrophy of strain 129/ReJ-dy manifest a unique antigen. In the current study, this antigen was enriched from solubilized membranes by a two-step solid phase immunoadsorbent. The enriched fraction retained antigenicity as well as a reduced set of electrophoretic forms of protein over that seen in solubilized membranes. The enriched fraction contained no novel molecular weight species but several were noticeably enriched, particularly at 54,000 daltons.

Abstract
Acute administration of cocaine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) stimulated activity of striatal tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) which reached its maximum level at 10 min and returned to normal between 20-40 min. However, tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) activity in the pons-medulla was reduced to a minimum at 10 min after its injection and returned to normal between 20-40 min. Activity of monoamine oxidase (MAO) was significantly reduced at 10 min and increased MAO (Type A) at 20 min showing a biphasic effect of cocaine on this enzyme. Relation of the time-courses of cocaine effects on the activity of these enzymes and the levels of related neurotransmitters is discussed.
