Abstract
The successful correction of infantile osteopetrosis in an Asian child by bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from an HLA-A,B matched cousin donor is reported. Retrospective HLA molecular analysis revealed that patient and donor were incompatible for HLA-DPB1. Donor type cells detected in the patient after transplantation indicate successful engraftment. The patient is currently alive and well.

Abstract
Misoprostol, a prostaglandin E(1) analog, is an effective radioprotector in animal studies. Based on this evidence, a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study was conducted to determine if misoprostol protected the oral and pharyngeal mucosa of irradiated head and neck cancer patients from radiation mucositis. Postsurgical patients who had no detectable cancer and who were referred for postoperative irradiation were candidates for this study. Thirty-four Hines VA and 35 Loyola University patients were accrued (69 total) over a 2-year period. A misoprostol tablet (200 &mgr;g) or an identical placebo tablet was dissolved in water and administered as an oral rinse daily about 20 min before irradiation. Conventional fractionated radiotherapy, consisting of five weekly doses of 2 Gy day(minus sign1), was delivered. The degree of mucositis was scored on a scale from 0 (no mucositis) to 4. In the 17 patients randomly assigned to the misoprostol arm at the Hines VA, no advantage was seen compared to the 17 placebo-treated patients. However, there was significantly less mucositis (p < 0.01, analysis of variance) from weeks 3--6 in the 17 patients treated with misoprostol at Loyola compared to the 18 placebo-treated patients. Several problems in the study were identified at the VA, including adherence to the protocol design. Other problems such as adequate mucositis scoring, radiation scatter from fillings, and, in particular, adequate timing between misoprostol and irradiation were identified at both locations. Absorption studies in healthy volunteers showed significant plasma levels at 10 min after an oral rinse, suggesting that initial clinical trials should be confined to topical misoprostol until more is known regarding the effect of misoprostol on tumors. The results of this pilot study suggest that misoprotol may protect the oral and pharyngeal mucosa from radiation-induced mocositis if adequate time between topical administration and radiation is allowed.

Abstract
It is well known that patients requiring long-term mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy have nearly universal airway colonization with Gram-negative organisms. However, useful parameters to objectively describe the airway inflammation associated with airway instrumentation and colonization have not been well define. In our respiratory care unit, patients who are medically stable except for ventilator dependence are readily available for longitudinal assessment of airway secretions and therefore provide a unique population for studying airway inflammation and infection. To quantitate production of respiratory secretions, we instituted a uniform protocol of suctioning over a 6-h period. Further, we devised a method of dilution and homogenization of tracheal aspirates that permits reproducible intrasample total cell counts (coefficient of variation, 4.6%). With these techniques, patients were then studied serially over a 4- to 7-week period. Total cell count, inflammatory cell differential, and two indices of airway inflammation, human neutrophil elastase (HLE) and soluble-intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) studied in the sol phase of secretions were monitored. The mean total cell count was 42.2 x 10(6) cells per gram of secretions when patients were clinically stable and not receiving antibiotics. The average differential was neutrophils 69.9%, macrophages 26.9%, and lymphocytes 2.8%. Mean active HLE was 35.6 micrograms/mL and mean sICAM-1 was 83 ng/mL. Six patients during the period of observation received intravenous oral or aerosolized antibiotics for tracheobronchitis. A threefold drop in volume of secretions was measured (p < 0.018). The total cell count and percent neutrophils decreased from 76.4 x 10(6)/g of sputum to 54.9 x 10(6) and 72.2 to 54.9%, respectively. While these changes were not statistically significant, the absolute number of airway neutrophils over the 6 h decreased sevenfold (p < 0.014). Similarly sICAM-1 burden (micrograms per 6-h period) also decreased significantly (p < 0.034). These patients provide a unique human model for future studies specifically designed to assess the effect of novel modalities of anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents on respiratory secretions.

Abstract
We are in the process of establishing a pharmacokinetic database for drug dosage adjustment to impaired renal function. To meet these demands, the system needs a unifying pharmacokinetic concept. Drug clearance is the common parameter that allows for intersecting the different pharmacokinetic approaches. In addition, two parameters are essentially needed for the concept, either the area-derived volume and the dominant elimination half-life or the moment-derived volume and the mean residence time. For drugs where the area-derived volume decreases with renal impairment, it can be shown that compartment-derived parameters are explicitly convertible into moment-derived parameters and vice versa.

Abstract
PURPOSE To present the effects of different radiotherapeutic treatments on the morphonuclear characteristics and growth of the MXT mouse mammary adenocarcinoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS We collected MXT tumor cells by means of fine-needle aspirations during various radiotherapeutic treatments and analyzed the morphological aspects of the cell nuclei by means of the digital cell image analysis of Feulgen-stained nuclei. In addition, we studied the morphonuclear aspects of cells from MXT tumors that had been radioresistant cell enriched. These radioresistant cell-enriched tumors involved MXT tumors that had survived one or two previous radiotherapies. The radiotherapy-induced effects on the morphonuclear characteristics were monitored by means of both monovariate (one-way variance) and multivariate (principal components and step-wise linear discriminant) analyses. RESULTS The monovariate analyses showed that radiotherapy significantly influenced the values of the parameters relating to nuclear size (nuclear area--NA), the frequency of small dense chromatin clumps (short run length emphasis--SRL) in the nuclei, and the overall chromatin condensation level (local mean--LM). The global effect corresponded to a decrease in the overall chromatin condensation level in the radioresistant cell-enriched MXT tumors. This decrease occurred concomitantly with an increase in the frequency of the small dense chromatin clumps in the nuclei and a decrease in the nuclear area. The multivariate analyses showed that it was possible to quantitate the proportion of "radiosensitive-like" and "radioresistant-like" cell nuclei in the various MXT tumor types under study. CONCLUSIONS The development of certain morphonuclear parameters, that is, the NA, the SRL, and the LM, could be proposed to predict the response of human tumors to radiotherapy as, indeed, could the quantitation of the proportion of radioresistant cells.

Abstract
Antibody response in HCV infection may be variable and the variability of the serological response could be due to the differences in HCV strains. Since the distribution of hepatitis C virus genotype has been found to be geographically dependent, it is important to determine the distribution of HCV genotype in various countries with high prevalence of chronic non-A, non-B hepatitis. In this study, serum HCV RNA was examined in 53 patients suspected of chronic non-A, non-B hepatitis with an anti-HCV test as determined by currently available assay. HCV viremia was detected in 48 patients (90.6%). These patients had elevated serum ALT level at the time of HCV RNA determination. Using specific genotype probes, all isolates were classified into three different genotypes. Double and triple infections were also noted. HCV genotype 1b is the predominant genotype found in chronic hepatitis C patients in Jakarta.

Abstract
To elicit antibodies directed specifically against the neuron-specific form of the c-src gene product, pp60c-src(+), we used an antigenized antibody comprising a decamer containing the amino acid sequence specific to pp60c-src(+) inserted into the third hypervariable loop of the heavy (H)-chain variable (V)-region. This was used to raise anti-idiotype antibodies reacting with the peptide epitope in rabbits. The antisera reacted with pp60c-src(+), as judged by immune blotting, immunoprecipitation, immune complex kinase assay, and indirect immunofluorescence staining, but did not react with the fibroblast form of the c-src gene product, pp60c-src. Antigenized antibody is a useful approach for producing antibodies able to distinguish between isoforms of the same gene product and specific for the neuronal form of the Src protein.

Abstract
Many anticancer drugs are classified as either weak bases or molecules whose binding to cellular structures is pH dependent. Accumulation of these drugs within tumor cells should be affected by transmembrane pH gradients. Indeed, development of multidrug resistance (MDR) in tumor cells has been correlated with an alkaline shift of cytosolic pH. To examine the role of pH in drug partitioning, the distribution of two drugs, doxorubicin and daunomycin, was monitored in fibroblasts and myeloma cells. In both cell types the drugs rapidly accumulated within the cells. The highest concentrations were measured in the most acidic compartments--e.g., lysosomes. Modifying the cellular pH in drug-sensitive cells to mimic reported shifts in MDR caused an immediate change in the cellular drug concentration. Drug accumulation was enhanced by acidic shifts and reversed by alkaline shifts. All of these effects were rapid and reversible. These results demonstrate that the alkaline shift observed in MDR is sufficient to prevent the accumulation of chemotherapeutic drugs independent of active drug efflux.

Abstract
A conceptual model for studying the involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in the performance of lateral swaying movements is described. The model is based on a four-link planar biped that approximates gross human locomotion in the frontal plane. The viscoelastic function of the musculoskeletal system provides a linear controller for the system. Such an intrinsic controller can effectively duplicate simple well-learned tasks in the absence of higher level CNS feedback. This hypothesis is supported by comparing the proposed controller with two neurophysiologically involved linear decoupling schemes. Reference trajectories for swaying commands are recorded from experiments conducted in the Gait Analysis Laboratory of the Ohio State University Hospitals. These reference trajectories are inputs to all three controllers. The viability of intrinsic feedback scheme in the execution of swaying tasks is demonstrated via comparison of responses from the three controllers.

Abstract
Mesenteric vein thrombosis is a rare but severe complication in children requiring splenectomy. We report on a 5-year-old boy with an autoimmune hemolytic anemia who underwent splenectomy because of severe side effects from cortisone therapy. 10 months after splenectomy he presented with signs of a paralytic ileus. Laparotomy showed mesenteric vein thrombosis with hemorrhagic bowel infarction requiring resection of two thirds of the small intestine. An early recognition and thrombolytic or surgical treatment of mesenteric vein thrombosis may reduce the incidence of hemorrhagic infarction, peritonitis, and secondary complications in these patients.

Abstract
The acute-phase reactant serum amyloid A (SAA) is a polymorphic apolipoprotein encoded by a family of highly homologous and closely linked genes: SAA1, SAA2, and SAA3. We have isolated a human genomic cosmid clone containing the gene encoding a fourth, constitutively expressed member of the human SAA superfamily, C-SAA, together with an SAA2*2 (SAA2 beta) gene. The gene encoding C-SAA shares the same 5' to 3' orientation as SAA2*2 and has the characteristic four-exon structure of the other members of the SAA superfamily. The exons of the gene encoding C-SAA share only limited sequence identity with those of SAA1, SAA2, and SAA3; they specify an mRNA, represented by the CS-1 cDNA reported previously by us, which is expressed at low levels (relative to the acute-phase SAAs) in normal and acute-phase liver. The gene encoding C-SAA is located 9 kb downstream of SAA2*2 and therefore occupies the locus that has been identified as containing the SAA4 gene.

Abstract
The functional characteristics of neutrophils are exceedingly sensitive to physiological conditions as well as the details of isolation. Exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or even contamination of the isolating media with traces of LPS is known to play an important role in regulating cell function and expression of receptors. Because of the suspected role of CD14 as a receptor for LPS, we used anti-CD14 monoclonal antibodies both to identify CD14 in the cell surface of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and to inhibit functional changes elicited by LPS. Cytometric techniques were used to investigate the regulation of CD14 and CR3 on the neutrophil cell surface in whole blood to minimize any effects of isolation. In whole blood neutrophil express low levels of formyl peptide receptor, CD14, and CR3, which increase substantially in response to formyl peptide and LPS. The increases in CR3 and CD14 occurred in parallel and were independent of protein synthesis and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) production. The increase in CR3 was inhibited by antibodies MY4, 3C10, and 28C5 against CD14. These findings are consistent with the notion that in blood the observed receptor up-regulation is in direct response to the action of LPS on neutrophils through CD14 and does not require products from macrophages such as TNF or the production of C5a from the plasma.

Abstract
The French law on organ harvesting in brain dead patients allows this to be done without the family's consent, but prescribes to inform the relatives. Despite this, most teams do not harvest organs if the family is strongly opposed to the procedure. Information given to the relatives is therefore a very important point in the management of the donor. This prospective multicentre enquiry was designed to assess the conditions in which relatives were informed, and to determine the criteria which improve the rate of consent for the donation. After such information had been given, a questionnaire was filled in and sent to France-Transplant. Two hundred and seven interviews were analysed over an 18-month period. In two thirds of cases, the relatives were interviewed less than three hours after the diagnosis of brain death had been made. A written information sheet was used in only one third of interviews. Information was given by telephone in 11% of cases. Organ donation was accepted, on average, in 74% of cases. This ratio, which did not depend on the hospital, increased with the age of the donor: 66% for donors aged less than 18 years to 86% for those more than 50 years old. The aetiology of brain death was not a factor determining acceptance of the donation. The main factor was the conditions of interview: acceptance rate was the highest when there was a one hour delay between giving the information on the donor's brain death and that concerning organ donation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The prognostic value of the pathological response to combination chemotherapy of deeply invasive transitional cell cancer of the bladder was retrospectively assessed in 147 patients. Data were collected from 8 different centers. Patients were eligible if they had received intravenous combination chemotherapy followed by partial, total or radical cystectomy, and if they had a minimum followup of 2 years after the start of chemotherapy. Of the patients 90% received methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin and cisplatin (M-VAC) or cisplatin plus methotrexate for a median of 3 courses (range 1 to 6). Of the 83 patients who were alive at analysis actuarial median followup was 30.5 months (range 13.2 to 85.6 months). A major pathological response (stage P0, Pis, Pa or P1) was achieved in 41.5% of the patients. Patients with a major pathological response (p stage less than 2) had a 5-year survival of 75% in contrast to 20% for the remaining nonresponding patients (p stage 2 or more). The survival of patients with a major pathological response was independent of whether the response was induced by 2 or more courses of chemotherapy, or whether it was induced by M-VAC in comparison with cisplatin plus methotrexate. Preoperative clinical assessments can identify nonresponding patients correctly and in these cases alternative treatment programs are required, since 80% will die of the disease. Moreover, if neoadjuvant chemotherapy is proved to increase survival, the data emphasize the importance of the response rate of the primary tumor and the need to investigate the optimal number of courses to induce the best response, preferably in the individual patient.

Abstract
Egg yolk is relating to its germ content and enzyme activity only restricted storable. Unpasteurized egg yolk get spoiled between a few hours and days. The rapid spoilage can be reduced by a pasteurization and following cold storage. The storage stability of egg yolk can be increased by additives, e.g. salt or saccharose. Kinetic results of the thermal microorganisms destruction in the egg yolk with and without stabilizing additives are presented in this article. It will be shown that the evaluation method from REICHART gives representative results for mixed cultures, too. A further evaluation method by a differential equation will be demonstrated and discussed.

Abstract
There are three common C2 protein alleles in caucasians, C2*C, C2*B, and C2*Q0, with allele frequencies of 0.96, 0.03, and 0.01, as well as Sst I RFLP variants of 2.75, 2.7, 2.65, 2.55, and 2.4 kb, with frequencies of 0.017, 0.533, 0.358, 0.017, and 0.075. Thus, C2*C is informatively split by the RFLP. Of 94 nonrandomly ascertained caucasian complotypes, 77 contained C2*C, four contained C2*Q0, and 13 had C2*B. None of the C2*C-containing complotypes carried the 2.75 kb Sst I fragment and all of the complotypes with C2*B or C2*Q0 carried it. All of the C2*Q0 alleles were associated with C4A*4, C4B*2 in the complotype S042 as previously reported. C2*B was usually (9/13) in the complotype SB42, occasionally (1/13 each) in SB45, SB41, SB(4,3)0, and SB31. Thus, the association of the C2 2.75-kb fragment was with C2*B and C2*Q0, not with C4A*4, C4B*2, or even C4A*4 alone. The complotype SC42 was associated with the 2.65-kb Sst I fragment in four of five instances and in a single example with the 2.7-kb fragment. C2*B and C2*Q0 possibly had a common evolutionary ancestor complotype which carried the 2.75-kb Sst I fragment, and BF*S, C4A*4, and C4B*2. C2*B (particularly as the haplotype HLA-Bw62, SB42, DR4) is associated with type 1 diabetes but C2*Q0 is protective.

Abstract
The entire coding sequence of wild-type mouse p53 was expressed in Escherichia coli under control of the PL promoter of bacteriophage lambda. The bacterial p53 protein had identical mobility to p53 from SV3T3 cells on SDS polyacrylamide gels and was recognized in bacterial lysates by three p53-specific monoclonal antibodies, including PAb246 which is specific for wild-type mouse p53. Immunoprecipitates of the bacterial p53 were phosphorylated by a highly purified preparation of rat casein kinase II; the stoichiometry of incorporation was approximately 1 mol of phosphate per mol of p53. The phosphorylated residue was identified by phosphopeptide mapping as serine 389, which is a major site of p53 phosphorylation in vivo. p53 (serine 389) kinase activity was detected on lysates of SV3T3 cells; this activity co-purified with casein kinase II on phosphocellulose and Mono Q columns and was inhibited by heparin. Immunoprecipitates of the p53-T antigen complex from SV3T3 cells also had associated serine 389 kinase activity. Phosphorylation of serine 389 by this kinase was potently inhibited by heparin and quenched by excess unlabelled GTP. The data indicate that p53 is a physiological substrate of casein kinase II, which is stimulated in response to mitogens, phosphorylates nuclear oncoproteins, and may play a role in the transduction of extracellular signals to the nucleus.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of lengthening of the medial hamstrings on the gait of patients who had spastic cerebral palsy. Thirty-one patients had preoperative and postoperative gait analyses. Standard parameters, such as velocity, cadence, and stride length, were evaluated, as were motion graphs of the hip, knee, and ankle. There was little difference between the preoperative and postoperative mean values for velocity, cadence, and stride length, which were expressed as percentages of normal for the patient's age. The contours of the postoperative motion graphs of the knees changed very little compared with those of the preoperative graphs; when a graph showed restricted motion preoperatively, it did so postoperatively. Although extension of the knee in stance phase improved postoperatively, the improvement was accompanied by decreased flexion of the knee during swing phase. When spasticity of both the hamstrings and the quadriceps was noted on the preoperative electromyogram, motion of the knee in the sagittal plane was markedly restricted.

Abstract
An HPLC method was used to monitor the chemical stability of doxorubicin-HCl (DXR) to light in plasma, urine and cell culture medium at room temperature. The results indicated that DXR was very unstable in cell culture medium and urine when exposed to light. It was more stable in plasma under the same conditions. In all the cases, the decrease in the amount of DXR is greatly dependent on light intensity (no noticeable degradation was observed after 8 h in the dark). These observations may be important for the correct interpretation of the effects and the toxicity of doxorubicin on cells incubated in cell medium, and for determination of urinary or plasma pharmacokinetic parameters.

Abstract
Resection of the proximal end of the femur and interpositional arthroplasty was done in thirty-four patients (fifty-six hips) to allow the patients to sit comfortably and to make perineal care painless. All of the patients were severely handicapped because of cerebral palsy, were unable to walk, and were residents of one of two state institutions. After a minimum follow-up of two years, the result had not deteriorated in thirty-three of the thirty-four patients.

Abstract
Human neutrophils contain large amounts of a neutral serine protease, human neutrophil elastase (HNE), which has been implicated as a mediator of acute and chronic lung injury. We found that this enzyme is effectively inhibited, at physiological ionic strength, by several synthetic non-base-paired polyribonucleotides. Among the most active of these is polyguanylic acid (poly G). Inhibitory activity is greatest with high-molecular-weight poly G fractions, but poly G fractions even as low as 60K Mr (app) are effective. Both amidolysis of synthetic elastase substrates, such as succinyl-ala-ala-ala-p-nitroanilide, and proteolysis of elastin are blocked. Poly G inhibits elastin proteolysis even when subsequently added to mixtures of elastin and HNE that have first been preincubated together for 10 min. Under these conditions, polyribosylribitol phosphate, a polyanion derived from Haemophilus influenzae capsular polysaccharide, is not inhibitory. Complex formation between HNE and poly G is dependent on ionic rather than covalent interactions, since it is blocked by 0.6 M NaCl but not by inactivation of the enzyme's catalytic-site serine residue with diisopropylfluorophosphate. However, nonspecific ionic interactions alone cannot explain complex formation, since pancreatic elastase and cathepsin G, an even more basic serine protease from human neutrophils, do not form complexes with poly G, even at low ionic strength. Moreover, in the presence of the amphiphiles taurocholic acid and glycocholic acid, HNE is much less effectively blocked by poly G. Peptide chloromethyl ketone-inactivate HNE (which has its extended substrate-binding pocket occupied by the peptidyl inactivator) also fails to form complexes with poly G. These results indicate that HNE may utilize both hydrophobic and ionic binding sites to couple with poly G, and suggest that these sites may be close to or within the extended substrate-binding pocket of the enzyme.

Abstract
We previously demonstrated that pneumococcal extracts contain a highly specific inhibitor of human neutrophil elastase (HNE). We now show that the active inhibitor in these extracts is a high-molecular-weight, heat-stable substance that appears to be RNA, since inhibitory activity of pneumococcal extracts is decreased by incubation with ribonuclease but not by incubation with deoxyribonuclease or proteinase K. Moreover, metabolically labeled ([3H]uridine) pneumococcal RNA, isolated by phenol extraction followed by ethanol precipitation, strongly inhibits HNE. Pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide, although polyanionic, is only weakly inhibitory toward HNE and is not a major source of elastase-inhibitory activity in pneumococcal extracts. On the other hand, the capsule of Haemophilus influenzae type b contains polyribosylribitol phosphate. This highly charged polyanion possesses HNE-inhibitory activity, but only under special circumstances to be discussed below. Pneumococci (type I, type II smooth, type II rough) and H. influenzae (type b) all release HNE-inhibitory activity into their culture medium during growth. By contrast, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus release little (if any) stable HNE-inhibitory activity during growth. We propose that some bacterial pneumonias may spare host tissue because polyanions released by the invading microorganisms (e.g. RNA from autolysing pneumococci) inhibit elastase released from inflammatory neutrophils and thereby modulate accompanying tissue proteolysis. Pneumonias caused by microorganisms that do not release stable polyanionic inhibitors of HNE (e.g., Staphylococcus and Klebsiella) may be correspondingly more injurious to the lung.

We used a murine retroviral expression vector, containing a genomic clone of the chicken c-src gene, a bacterial origin of replication, and a selectable marker, to remove 10 introns from the c-src gene. All 10 introns were removed accurately, and no mutations were introduced. The processed gene encoded a functional pp60c-src protein tyrosine kinase.

Abstract
We introduced two mutations into the carboxy-terminal regulatory region of chicken pp60c-src. One, F527, replaces tyrosine 527 with phenylalanine. The other, Am517, produces a truncated pp60c-src protein lacking the 17 carboxy-terminal amino acids. Both mutant proteins were phosphorylated at tyrosine 416 in vivo. The specific activity of the Am517 mutant protein kinase was similar to that of wild-type pp60c-src whereas that of the F527 mutant was 5- to 10-fold higher. Both mutant c-src genes induced focus formation on NIH 3T3 cells, but the foci appeared at lower frequency, and were smaller than foci induced by polyoma middle tumor antigen (mT). The wild-type or F527 pp60c-src formed a complex with mT, whereas the Am517 pp60c-src did not. The results suggest that one, inability to phosphorylate tyrosine 527 increases pp60c-src protein kinase activity and transforming ability; two, transformation by mT involves other events besides lack of phosphorylation at tyrosine 527 of pp60c-src; three, activation of the pp60c-src protein kinase may not be required for transformation by the Am517 mutant; and four, the carboxyl terminus of pp60c-src appears to be required for association with mT.

Abstract
Computerized analysis of gait was performed in six patients with hydrocephalus (mean age, 75.7 years), for comparison with other elderly patients with gait problems and age-matched controls. A decrease in velocity and stride, an increase in sway, and the proportion of time spent in double-limb stance were nonspecific features correlated with declining performance. Certain features appeared to characterize hydrocephalic gait when compared among groups; cadence was diminished, and there was a reduction of step height and a decreased counterrotation of the shoulders relative to the pelvis. An abnormal tendency toward cocontraction in antagonist muscle groups was observed in electromyographic data from the leg muscles, suggesting that the normal phased activation of muscle groups is disturbed. Although data are not conclusive, we believe that the gait disorder in normal-pressure hydrocephalus reflects a subcortical motor control disorder rather than a phenomenon of spasticity or apraxia.

Abstract
In a double-blind study of 41 outpatients aged 55 to 80 years with mild memory impairment, the efficacy of dihydroergotoxine mesylate (DEM, Hydergine) at 6 mg per day, administered orally, was tested during a twelve-week period. Specific etiologies for the amnesic syndrome were ruled out by history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Subjects with a Hamilton Depression Scale rating above 18, ie, possible pseudodementia, were excluded. Physician rating of memory, employing the Inventory of Psychic and Somatic Complaints in the Elderly (IPSC-E), indicated statistically significant improvement of memory function in DEM treated subjects (N = 22) v those on placebo (N = 19), (F = 3.34; df = 1,39; P less than .04). In contrast, structured testing of recent memory using digit symbol substitution and Zahlenverbindungs test (ZVT) showed improvement in both groups (P less than .001) with no significant intergroup differences (P less than .10). Out results indicate that in cases of mild, though subjectively distressing impairment, DEM at higher dosages may help to enhance short-term memory function.

Abstract
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and conventional radiographs were compared in 49 hips with Avascular Necrosis (AVN). MRI detected AVN in 25% of the hips during the preradiological stage of the disease. Both MRI and conventional radiographs accurately detected AVN in the remaining 75% of hips. Correlation between the patterns observed with the two techniques reflected the underlying histopathologic events. The reactive interface between infarcted bone and viable bone could be identified on MRI as a low signal intensity (SI) band. On conventional radiographs the reactive interface appeared as a sclerotic band. The adjacent hyperemic zone was seen on MRI as a high SI band and as a lucent zone on the plain films. Variations of this pattern occurred as related to the extend and duration of AVN and to the individual's ability to mount a healing response. Minor degrees of collapse of the femoral head were better identified with plain radiographs but MRI demonstrated small areas of hyperintensity probably corresponding to early subchondral fractures.

We conclude that an N-terminal domain of the middle T antigen, in the appropriate cellular location, can substitute for the small T antigen during lytic infection.

Abstract
A murine retrovirus encoding the middle T protein of polyomavirus infected and transformed nonestablished chicken embryo cells. The infected cultures formed colonies in soft agar-containing medium and released infectious transforming virus. Middle T protein expressed in the transformed chicken cells associated with p60c-src and, in immunoprecipitates, enhanced the tyrosine protein kinase activity of p60c-src.

Abstract
The association of erythema nodosum with Hodgkin's disease is acknowledged, although not well-documented in the literature. Two patients with long remissions of their Hodgkin's disease manifested persistent erythema nodosum beginning 7 and 6 months, respectively, before relapse was clinically evident. The skin lesions in both patients partially responded to treatment with indomethacin, but did not resolve completely until chemotherapy was instituted. Erythema nodosum probably reflects an important change in the balance of biologic forces between the host and the neoplasm, the nature of which can only be speculated upon at this time. Erythema nodosum should be considered a warning signal of impending relapse in a patient with a history of Hodgkin's disease.

Abstract
Patients at Boston's Children's Hospital diagnosed as having cerebral palsy were filmed walking. These films were digitized and translated into measurements associated with leg motion. In this paper we use the gait measurements of 128 such patients to illustrate the the kth nearest neighbour clustering procedure results in a gait typology for patients with cerebral palsy. The procedure identifies four subpopulations from the sample data; the membership of a patient within this typology is mostly determined by the patient's motor control. The developed typology differs from the present diagnostic system which classifies a cerebral palsy patient as either quadriplegic, diaplegic or hemiplegic.

Abstract
The ever-increasing negative balance between the offer of an demand for organs with regard to transplantation surgery is very problematic. The transplantation centres are confronted with an insolvable problem and for this reason the co-operation of hospitals, other than the transplantation centres, is of vital importance where the explantation of kidneys, under specified conditions, is concerned. There are reports of new experiences in the removal of organs through in-situ-perfusion and en-bloc-removals as well as combined consignments of organs and typing material. The favourable results personally achieved during the past 6 years have given cause to believe that other clinics or hospitals, other than the transplantation centres, will participate in the explantation or organs for the purpose of transplantation.
