Abstract
Riverine runoff is an important mode to transport anthropogenic pollutants from terrestrial sources to oceans. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in riverine runoff samples from the eight major outlets within the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China, an economically fast developing region housing a vast number of electronics manufacturing and assembling plants. The sigma 17PBDEs (sum of 17 BDE congeners, i.e., BDE-28, -47, -66, -85, -99, -100, -138, -153, -154, -183, -196, -197, -203, -206, -207, -208, and -209) concentrations varied from 344 to 68,000 pg/L, with those of BDE-209, BDE-47, and BDE-99 being 335-65200, 3-143, and <1-200 pg/L, respectively. These levels were in the high end of the global PBDEs concentrations in the aquatic environments. The monthly inputs of sigma 17PBDEs ranged from 0.21 to 215 kg at individual outlets, and the annual input of sigma 17PBDEs from all the outlets was estimated at 2140 kg/year. Of the target BDE congeners, BDE-209 was the most predominant component with an annual input of 1960 kg/year, followed by BDE-47 (13.3 kg/year) and BDE-99 (11.7 kg/year). An extrapolation of the past use of PBDEs in the region concluded that 23 metric tons of sigma 17PBDEs have been discharged into the coastal ocean from the PRD in the last 20 years. The amount of PBDEs imported to China in the form of e-waste was estimated at 35000 metric tons/year, higher than the annual domestic production of brominated fire retardants (approximately 10000 metric tons/year) and the annual riverine input of total PBDEs from the PRD, suggesting that the majority of PBDEs inventory has been accumulated from importation of e-wastes. Because of the continuous importation of e-wastes and strong demand for brominated fire retardants, the impact of PBDEs on China's and the world's environments is expected to persist for many years to come.

Abstract
The present study provides information on the time trend of PBDEs in three sediment cores from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), South China, using 210Pb dating technique. The sigmaPBDEs (except for BDE 209) concentrations in all sediment cores increased gradually from the bottom (mid-1970s) to the middle layer (later 1980s and early 1990s) followed by different temporal trends in different locations to the surface sediments, reflecting the variations in the consumption of commercial penta-BDEs mixture in different regions of the Pearl River Delta. The BDE 209 concentrations remained constant until 1990 and thereafter increased exponentially to the present, with doubling times of 2.6 +/- 0.5-6.4 +/- 1.6 years, suggesting the increasing market demands for deca-BDE mixture after 1990 in China. The inventories of sigmaPBDEs and BDE 209 in sediments of the PRE were 56.0 and 368.2 ng cm(-2), respectively, and the total burden of PBDEs in the PRE were estimated at 8.6 metric tons. The current sigmaPBDEs and BDE 209 fluxes to the PRE were 2.1 and 29.7 ng cm(-2) yr(-1), respectively. The concurrent increase of BDE 209 fluxes and the annual gross industrial output values of electronics manufacturing revealed that the rapid growth of electronics manufacturing in this region since the early 1990s was responsible for the sharp rise of BDE 209 fluxes in the past decade. The PBDE congener compositions of the cores indicated the various input pathways for PBDEs transport to different locations of the estuary.

Abstract
On the basis of a monthly sampling effort from March 2005 to February 2006, the total concentrations of the sums of 27 and 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (defined as sigma27PAHs and sigma15PAHs, respectively) in riverine runoff of the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China, and associated fluxes were determined. No clear temporal and spatial trends of PAH concentrations were found at all eight riverine runoff outlets where the samples were collected. The annual fluxes of sigma27PAHs and sigma15PAHs from the PRD to the coastal ocean were 60.2 and 33.9 metric tons, respectively. Assuming that riverine flux was positively related to the regional emission of PAHs, the annual riverine fluxes from five major rivers in China to the global oceans were estimated, which are quite significant relative to other major rivers of the world. On the basis of mass balance considerations, approximately 87% of sigma15PAHs inputting to the Pearl River Estuary and northern South China Sea was derived from riverine runoff from the PRD. In addition, approcimately 22.3 metric tons of sigma15PAHs annually outflow to open seas, which is equivalent to a concentration of 0.34 pg/L in the global oceans if the PAHs are evenly distributed in the upper 200 m of the water column. A comparison with the global background level of PAHs indicated that approximately 0.4% of PAHs in the open oceans may have been contributed by 1-year discharge from the PRD.

Abstract
This study examined human exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) associated with fish consumption and inhalation in China. The median intake of sigma7 PBDEs via human milk was 48.2 ng/day for nursing infants (0-1 years old) (a range of 23.4-99.1 ng/day). For all other age groups, the median intake of sigma11 PBDEs via fish consumption was 1.7-12.9 ng/day with a range of 0.59-56.3 ng/g. Additionally, human exposure to PBDEs via inhalation was 2.7-9.2 ng/day (a range of 0.72-108 ng/day). The median total sigma11 PBDEs intakes for nursing infants (6874 and 7372 pg/ kg b.w./day for males and females, respectively) were much higher than other age groups (215-608 pg/kg b.w./ day). No significant difference in the total PBDEs intakes was found between males and females. Of the 11 PBDEs congeners, BDE-47 was predominant in the total intake for nursing infants with a mean contribution of 38%, whereas BDE-209 was the dominant congener of total intake for other age groups, varying from 44 to 61%. Currently, the PBDEs levels in Chinese consumer fish and the total intakes of PBDEs via fish consumption were at the lower end of the global range. Compared with similar studies in other countries, however, human exposure to PBDEs via inhalation in China was relatively high. Overall, estimated daily intake of total PBDEs in the Chinese population was far below the LOAEL. However, studies are needed to further understand the fate and impact of PBDEs as PBDE-containing products are still used widely in large quantities in China.

Abstract
The contents of nonhydrolyzable organic matter (NHC) and black carbon (BC) were measured in soils and sediments from the Pearl River Delta, South China. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were extracted respectively by Soxhlet and an accelerated solvent extraction device (ASE) using different solvents. In addition, sequential aqueous leaching at different temperatures was carried out. The PAH content extracted with the sequential three solvent ASE is two times higher than that using the Soxhlet extraction method. The relationship of the PAH content with the NHC content is very significant. The PAH concentrations measured at various temperature steps fit well to the Van't Hoff equation and the enthalpy was estimated. The investigation indicates that condensed organic matter such as kerogen carbon, aged organic matter, and BC is relevant for the extraction and distribution of native PAHs in the investigated field soils and sediments.

Abstract
Seafood consumption is an important route of human exposure to organic contaminants. Residual levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), including DDTs, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), heptachlor, aldrin, alpha-endosulfan, beta-endosulfan, dieldrin, endrin, endrin aldehyde, endrin ketone, methoxychlor, endosulfan sulfate, and heptachlor epoxide, were determined in a wide variety of seafood products collected from 11 coastal cities in southern China in June and October 2005. The results indicated that OCPs were predominated by DDTs and HCHs. The concentrations of other OCP components generally were low and were detectable in a small number of seafood samples only, probably reflective of the generally low levels of these OCPs in the study region and low bioaccumulation potentials in the species under investigation. Risk assessment against various standards clearly showed that seafood products were highly contaminated by DDTs and may pose health threat to local residents and the consumers all over the world. Furthermore, other OCP components, such as dieldrin and heptachlor, also impose lifetime cancer risk, especially to residents of coastal regions who often consume more seafood than those living inland. Therefore, continual monitoring of OCPs in various environment compartments, including biota and abiota, urgently is needed to mitigate effectively the impact of OCPs, particularly DDTs, on human health and the ecological environment.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were analyzed in three invertebrate species, five fish species with different living and feeding habits, and surface sediments collected from the Pearl River Estuary, South China. The concentrations of 10 PBDE congeners (BDEs 28, 47, 66, 99, 100, 85, 154, 153, 138, and 183) ranged from 34.1 to 444.5 ng/g lipid and from 9.88 to 39.0 ng/g organic carbon in biota and sediment samples, respectively. In sediments and some biota samples, BDE 209 was found as the major congener, ranging from nondetectable to 623.5 ng/g lipid in biota samples and from 792 to 4,137 ng/g organic carbon in sediment samples. Different levels of PBDEs in various biota species were attributed to the different feeding habits of the aquatic species or their ability to metabolize PBDE. Different congener profiles between the biota and sediment samples were observed and attributed to the bioaccumulation potential or the ability to metabolize individual BDE congeners. Polybrominated diphenyl ether levels in the biota from the Pearl River Estuary correlated well with lipid contents but did not correlate with the biota lengths. The distribution of biota-sediment accumulation factors for individual PBDE congeners was consistent with the general pattern predicted from a widely used bioaccumulation model.

Abstract
Aqueous solutions of (14)C-labeled analogs of seven hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) were subject to solid-phase microextraction (SPME) under static conditions to assess their multi-compartment distribution and to compare poly(dimethyl)siloxane (PDMS)-water partition coefficients (K(f) values) with previously reported values. To accomplish this, a protocol for quantitative desorption of radiolabelled HOCs from SPME fibers using hexane was developed. Time series extractions indicated that loading of SPME fibers had reached steady-state by day 8 for PCBs 52, 77 and 153, phenanthrene, benzo[a]pyrene, p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE. The recovery of spiked radioactivity among the (residual) aqueous phase, the PDMS coating, and all remaining wetted experimental surfaces ranged between 80 and 120%. K(f) values based on (14)C-labeled analogs were in good agreement with previously published values that were determined at (or closely approaching) equilibrium conditions and without significant chemical depletion and/or uncorrected system losses. Because it allows for the direct determination of HOCs associated with the residual aqueous and experimental surface compartments, the use of radiolabelled HOC analogs is a powerful tool in discriminating among competing sorptive compartments encountered in most SPME fiber calibration methodologies employed to date.

Abstract
Birds of prey from Northern China (Beijing area) were examined for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). A total of 47 specimens from eight different species were analyzed. Muscle and liver were analyzed separately for each bird. Kidneys were pooled by species. Common kestrels exhibited the highest PBDE levels (mean muscle and liver concentrations of 12300 and 12200 ng/g lipid weight, respectively), with maxima in an individual bird of 31700 in muscle and 40900 ng/g lw in liver. Congener profiles differed between some species, but were generally dominated by the more brominated congeners (e.g., BDE-153, -209, -183, -207). BDE-209 was especially elevated compared to other published reports. Interspecies differences in congener concentrations and profiles may be due to diet, behavior, or biotransformation capacities. BDE-209 was detected in 79.4% of the samples. Common kestrels contained the highest BDE-209 levels (mean/maxima of 2150/6220 in muscle and 2870/12200 ng/g lw in liver). BDE-209 was the dominant congener in tissues from some buzzards, scops owls, and long-eared owls. It was the second most abundant congener in common kestrels. The remarkable levels and dominance of BDE-209 may relate to significant production, usage, or disposal of deca-containing products in China. These observations reinforce the growing view that organisms using terrestrial food chains may have greater exposure to BDE-209.

Abstract
Concentrations of persistent halogenated hydrocarbons (PHHs) were determined in 13 consumer fish species (a total of 390 individuals) collected from a major fish-farming region of China. The potential health risks of PHHs associated with consumption of fish from China was also systematically assessed regionally and globally. In all fish samples, DDTs, HCHs, PCBs, and PBDEs were the predominant PHH residues, with the median levels (ranges) being 6.0 (0.14-698.9), 0.50 (0.13-24.06), 0.10 (< 0.02-7.65), and 0.15 (< 0.0012-3.85) ng/g wet weight, respectively. The upper-bound (90th percentile) values of estimated daily intakes of DDT, HCHs, PCBs, and PBDEs via fish consumption were 45.5, 1.35, 0.46, and 0.30 ng/kg bw/d (urban), and 15.9, 0.47, 0.16, and 0.10 ng/kg bw/d (rural). Globally, the upper-bound outflows via fishery exportation of DDT, HCHs, PCBs, and PBDEs were 185, 5.51, 1.86, and 1.22 kg, respectively, in 2005. Japan was the largest recipient of PHHs, followed by Korea and the United States. Fish consumption assessments indicated that consumption of freshwater farmed and wild marine fish generally does not subject consumers to significant health risk as far as PHHs are concerned, while limited consumption of seawater farmed fish is advised.

Abstract
Oilfield produced water was treated by photocatalysis, electro-oxidation, and photoelectrocatalysis, respectively. The chemical composition and toxicity of the raw effluent and treated products were assessed by chemical and mutagenicity analysis. The raw effluent exhibited mutagenic activity in both strains of Salmonella typhimurium. The lowest concentration of the dichloromethane extract capable of inducing a positive response in strains TA98 and TA100 were as low as 4 and 5 microg/plate, respectively. All three technologies could detoxify direct-acting mutagenic organic pollutants efficiently, although they could not completely eliminate mutagenicity in the water after 60 min of treatment. At equivalent doses, photoelectrocatalysis exhibited the greatest capability to reduce genotoxicity, whereas photocatalysis was the least effective and did not cause appreciable change in mutagenicity. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed that n-alkanes (259.4 ng/L) and phenolic compounds (2,501.4 ng/L) were the main organic constituents in the oilfield produced water. Thus, the results of both biological and chemical analysis indicate that photoelectocatalysis was the most effective technology for degradation of oilfield wastewater.

Abstract
Because of its cost and time saving features, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a leading candidate as a biomimic technique in assessing the bioavailable fraction of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in sediment porewater. However, no predictive modeling framework in which to systematically address the effect of key parameters on SPME performance for this application exists. In this study, we derived two governing equations to predict (1) the minimum sediment volume (V(s)min) required to achieve non-depletive conditions, and (2) dissolved phase HOC porewater concentrations (C(pw)) as functions of HOC- and sediment specific characteristics in a conceptual three compartment system. The resulting model predicted that V(s)min was independent of HOC concentrations both in sediment and porewater, but did vary with hydrophobicity (characterized by logK(ow)), the fraction of sediment porewater (f(pw)), and the volume (V(f)) of the SPME sorbent phase. Moreover, the effects of these parameters were minimized (i.e., V(s)min reached plateaus) as logK(ow) approached 4-5. Model predictions of C(pw), a surrogate for SPME-based detection limits in porewater, decreased with increasing sediment volume (V(s)) at low V(s) values, but rapidly leveled off as V(s) increased. A third result suggested that the sediment HOC concentration required for SPME is completely independent of K(ow). These results suggest that relatively small sediment volumes participate in exchange equilibria among sediment, porewater and the SPME fiber, and that large sediment HOC reservoirs are not needed to improve the detection sensitivity of SPME-based porewater samplers. The ultimate utility of this modeling framework will be to assist future experimental designs and help predict in situ bioavailability of sediment-associated HOCs.

Abstract
A total of 32 surface sediments collected from the Yangtze River Estuary, Hangzhou Bay and the Qiantang River were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of summation operatorPBDEs (sum of 12 PBDE congeners without BDE 209) and BDE 209 varied from n.d. to 0.55 and from 0.16 to 94.6 ng/g, respectively. The spatial variability of summation operatorPBDEs concentrations indicated that waste discharge from the urban areas might been the main source of PBDEs in the Yangtze River Delta. BDE 209 was the predominant congener (approximately 90-100%) detected among the 13 congeners, consistent with the fact that technical deca-BDE mixtures are presently the dominant technical PBDE mixtures used in China. Compared to published data acquired from other locales, PBDE congeners with less than four bromines were more abundant in the present study area. The hydrodynamic conditions may likely be a significant factor in dictating the observed levels and congener distribution patterns of PBDEs.

Abstract
Quantitation of chromatographically coeluting compounds with partially overlapping mass profiles is a challenging task, especially if only a low-resolution mass spectrometer is available. To examine whether theoretical predictions can be utilized to determine the appropriate concentration ranges of the coeluting compounds that satisfy the non-interfering condition, we utilized an algorithm based upon a two-component model to compare the experimentally measured and predicted quantitation errors. Selected unlabeled and 13C-labeled polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were investigated as model compounds. Standard solutions containing various concentration ratios of the unlabeled and 13C-labeled PCB congeners were analyzed, and the data were used to compare with theoretical predictions derived from the chlorine isotopic distributions (35Cl and 37Cl). Good agreements between experimental predictions and theoretical predictions were found on the magnitude of interferences for quantitation of 13C-labeled PCB congeners, as well as on the variability of the quantitation errors with the concentration ratio of 13C-labeled and unlabeled PCB counterparts. In addition, the magnitude of interferences considered in the present study was highly dependent upon the number of coexisting ions included for quantitation and their relative abundances in the mass spectrum. All these results suggest that the magnitude of interferences in quantifying a pair of coeluting compounds with partially overlapping mass spectral profiles can be effectively determined and minimized by carefully selecting the concentration ratio of the coeluting compounds and/or the number of quantitation ions. Finally, the selection of the experimental parameters to satisfy the non-interfering condition can be made purely on the basis of theoretical considerations.

Abstract
A static solid-phase microextraction (SPME) procedure combined with liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was used to determine the poly(dimethyl)siloxane (PDMS)-water partition coefficients (K(f)) for selected polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs), including PCB 1, 15, 28, 47, 101, 153, 180, 202, 206, and 209. The accuracy for the measurements of analyte concentrations in the aqueous phase was ensured with a one-to-one recovery correction strategy employing one 13C-labeled PCB congener as a surrogate standard for each unlabeled PCB counterpart. The effects of coating thickness (7, 30, and 100 microm) and sample volume (130 mL and 2 L) on the K(f) values were examined experimentally and confirmed with paired t-tests. Significant dependence of K(f) values on coating thickness was found for a few heavily chlorinated congeners only, and was tentatively attributed to the use of the inaccurate effective coating volumes and the structural variation with these PDMS coatings. In addition, no significant differences in the log K(f) values of all analytes except for PCB 206 were found between the sample sizes of 130 mL and 2 L for both the 7- and 100-microm coatings. Overall, K(f) values obtained with 2-L sample containers were consistently higher than those reported in the literature, which is attributable to the selection of appropriate equilibrium times for SPME and direct measurements of aqueous analyte concentrations with LLE in the present study.

Abstract
Air samples were collected in June of 2004 from four sites in the city of Guangzhou, a typical urban center in South China, to determine the levels, compositional profiles, and gas-particle distribution of 11 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners (BDE-28, -47, -66, -100, -99, -85, -154, -153, -138, -183, and -209). The arithmetic mean atmospheric concentrations of sigmaPBDEs (sum of all target PBDE congeners except for BDE-209) in samples from the urban and city background sites were comparable to or slightly higher than those from other places around the world. The arithmetic mean atmospheric concentrations of BDE-209, however, were higherthan those in North America and Europe, and similar to the values from Japan. Congener compositions were dominated by BDE-209 in all (>70%) but an industrial site, with an average abundance of 48% for BDE-209. The PBDE patterns were generally similar to that in the technical penta-BDE mixture, Bromkal 70-5DE. Partitioning of PBDEs between the gas and particle phases (Kp) was well correlated with the subcooled liquid vapor pressure (PLO) for all of the samples, but the relationship differed between samples from different sites. The measured fractions of PBDEs in the particulate phase were compared to the predictions from the Junge-Pankow adsorption and KOA-based absorption models. The results indicated that the KOA-based model worked better than the Junge-Pankow model that tended to overestimate the particulate fractions for most PBDE congeners.

Abstract
Surface sediment (0-5 cm) samples were collected from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and the adjacent northern South China Sea (SCS) in July 2002 and analyzed for 25 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 8 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) including dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), and heptachlor. The total PAHs and OCPs concentrations were 138-1100 and 0.18-3.57 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Compositional pattern analysis suggested that PAHs in the PRE were derived from both pyrogenic and petrogenic sources, whereas most PAHs in the northern SCS were pyrogenically originated. The concentrations of both PAHs and OCPs were higher in the PRE than in the northern SCS, and a decreasing trend with the distance from the estuary to the open sea was observed. In addition, perylene was a predominant component in all samples and clustered with PAH compounds with high log Kow values (from phenanthrene). These findings indicated that river outflows were the major source of contamination in the offshore sediments. A preliminary assessment suggested that atmospheric deposition contributed only a minor portion of PAHs or OCPs in the sediments of the northern SCS. The sediment (0-5 cm) mass inventories were 126 and 423 metric tons for PAHs and were 0.4 and 1.4 metric tons for OCPs in the PRE and the northern SCS, respectively. Clearly, contaminated sediments of the northern SCS may be a potential source of PAHs and OCPs to the global oceans.

Abstract
A large-scale survey on the area and depth stratified distribution of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT; mainly p,p'- and o,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE)) contamination in the water column of the Southern California Bight (SCB) was conducted in 2003-2004 using a solid-phase microextraction-based sampling technique. Dissolved-phase DDEs were clearly widespread, with the central SCB containing the highest levels, and the Palos Verdes Shelf sediments have remained the dominant source of DDT compounds to the SCB. The p,p'- and o,p'-DDE concentrations ranged from < 0.073 to 2.6 ng/L and from < 0.043 to 0.26 ng/L, respectively, clearly elevated with respect to measured values from across the globe. DDEs were hypothesized to have been transported from the historically contaminated zone on the Palos Verdes Shelf to other areas via a repeated process of sediment resuspension/deposition and short-range advection. Total mass inventories were estimated at 14 and 0.86 kg for p,p'- and o,p'-DDE, respectively, for the sampled area, resulting in p,p'- and o,p'-DDE mass inventories for the entire SCB of 230 and 14 kg, respectively. Furthermore, total fluxes of p,p'-DDE were estimated to be in the range of 0.8 to 2.3 metric tons per year. These results suggest that the SCB has been and continues to be a significant source of DDT contamination to the global oceans.

Abstract
In July to September 2003, particulates in the oceanic atmosphere from the Bohai Sea to the high Arctic (37 degrees N to 80 degrees N) were collected aboard a research expedition icebreaker, Xuelong (Snow Dragon), under the 2003 Chinese Arctic Research Expedition Program (CHINARE 2003). These samples were analyzed to elucidate the atmospheric distributions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the North Pacific Ocean and adjacent Arctic region. The levels of 11 PBDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -66, -100, -99, -85, -154, -153, -138, -183, and -209; the sum was defined as sigma11PBDE) in the oceanic atmosphere of Far East Asia (34-48 degrees N/122-148 degrees E) ranged from 2.25 to 198.9 pg/m3 with a mean of 58.3 pg/m3. BDE-47, -99, -100, and -209 were the dominant congeners in all the samples, suggesting that the widely used commercial penta- and deca-BDE products were the original sources. The PBDE levels exhibited a decreasing trend from the mid- to high-latitudinal regions of the North Pacific Ocean, probably resulting from dilution, deposition, and decomposition of PBDEs during long-range transport of air masses. On the other hand, no apparent geographical pattern of PBDE distribution was observed within the Arctic, attributable to unstable air circulation and strong air mixing. Correlations among the PBDE congeners suggested that air masses collected from the North Pacific Ocean were relatively fresh, whereas those from the Arctic were aged as a result of photodecompoisiton. The higher average level (17.3 pg/m3) of PBDE congeners in the Arctic than those in the adjacent North Pacific Ocean (12.8 pg/m3) or other remote areas reported in the literature was attributed to the impact of the North American continent and temperature effects, which was consistent with the hypotheses of global fractionation.

Abstract
A combined approach employing comet assay and micronucleus (MN) and sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) tests was utilized to assess the genotoxicity of two pesticides, imidacloprid [1-(6-chloro-3-pyridylmethyl)-N-nitro-imidazolidin-2-ylideneamine] and RH-5849 [2'-benzoyl-1'-tert-butylbenzoylhydrazine], on human peripheral blood lymphocytes in vitro. No significant difference in the frequencies of MN and SCE from the negative groups (P>0.05) was observed at low dose levels (i.e., 0.05 mg/L for imidacloprid and 5mg/L for RH-5849). As the concentrations of imidacloprid and RH-5849 were increased to 0.1 and 25 mg/L, respectively, significant effects to the frequencies of MN and SCE (P<0.05) were achieved relative to those of the negative controls. MN and SCE frequencies increased similarly in a dose-related manner with both pesticides. With the comet assay, however, the distribution of DNA damage grades in all the pesticide-treated groups was significantly different from those in the control (P<0.01). DNA damage scores increased with the exposure levels of both pesticides, and linear dose-effect relationships were observed for both imidacloprid (r2=0.98) and RH-5849 (r2=0.92). The cytogenetic techniques and comet assay revealed potential adverse effects of both imidacloprid and RH-5849 in human peripheral blood lymphocytes in vitro. Combination of the comet assay and cytogenetic tests appears commendable to assess the potential risks of human exposure to the pesticides.

Abstract
Spatial and temporal distributions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sediments of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) and adjacent South China Sea (SCS) of southern China were examined. A total of 66 surface sediment samples were collected and analyzed to determine the concentrations of 10 PBDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -66, -100, -99, -154, -153, -138, -183, and -209). The concentrations of BDE-209 and SigmaPBDEs (defined as the sum of all targeted PBDE congeners except for BDE-209) ranged from 0.4 to 7340 and from 0.04 to 94.7 ng/g, respectively. The SigmaPBDEs concentrations were mostly < 50 ng/g, within the range for riverine and coastal sediments around the world, whereas the BDE-209 concentrations at the most contaminated sites were at the high end of the worldwide figures. Congener compositions were dominated by BDE-209 (72.6 - 99.7%), with minor contributions from penta- and octa-BDEs. Slightly different PBDE compositions were observed among samples collected from different locations, attributable to possible decomposition of highly brominated congeners and/or redistribution between particles of various sizes during atmospheric or fluvial transportation. The PBDE patterns in the SCS and Pearl River Estuary sediments were similar to those in sediments of the Zhujiang and Dongjiang Rivers, reflecting the widespread influence from local inputs. Analyses of two short sediment cores collected from the Pearl River Estuary showed that concentrations of BDE-209 rapidly increased in the upper layers of both cores, coincident with the growth of the electronics manufacturing capacities in the PRD region. The major sources of PBDEs were probably waste discharges from the cities of Guangzhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen, the three fastest growing urban centers in the PRD.

Abstract
Applications of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in the measurement of very hydrophobic organic compounds (VHOCs) are limited, partly due to the difficulty of calibrating SPME fibers for VHOCs. This study used a static SPME strategy with a large sample volume (1.6 L) and a five-point calibration procedure to determine the distribution coefficients for a large suite of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated pesticides between a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) phase (100 microm thickness) coated on a glass fiber and seawater. An extraction time of 12 days was deemed adequate for equilibrium calibration from kinetic experiments. Two groups of randomly selected fibers divided into three batches (up to nine fibers in each batch) were processed separately with two gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) systems. Matrix effects arising from losses of the analytes to glass container walls and stirring bars were corrected. Relative standard deviations within the same batch were generally smaller than those for the entire group. Furthermore, KfVf (Kf and Vf are the distribution coefficient of an analyte between the polymer-coated fiber and aqueous phase and the fiber volume, respectively) values determined with two GC-MS systems were statistically different. These results indicate the calibrated KfVf values were less affected by the random selection of SPME fibers than by other experimental conditions, and therefore average KfVf values may be used for the same type of commercially available SPME fibers. The relative accuracy of our calibration method was similar to that of a previous study [P. Mayer. W.H.J. Vaes, J.L.M. Hermens, Anal. Chem. 72 (2000) 459] employing different coating thickness and calibration procedure. The present study also obtained a bell-shaped relationship between log Kf and log Kow (octanol-water partition coefficient) for PCB congeners with the maximum log Kf corresponding to log Kow approximately 6.5. This bell-shaped relationship was attributed mainly to steric effects arising from the interplay between the PDMS thickness and molecular sizes of the target analytes.

Abstract
Despite the recent efforts to investigate the distribution and fate of persistent organic pollutants in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, very little was known about the temporal change of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the environmental ecosystem of China. In this study, three dated sediment cores collected from the Pearl River Delta of southern China were analyzed for a large suite of PCB congeners, from which the temporal profiles of PCB abundances, fluxes, and homologue patterns were constructed. The sedimentary inventories of total PCBs at the sampling sites ranged from 480 to 1310 ng/cm2, at the low end of the worldwide figures. Although production and use of PCBs have been banned or highly restricted in China since the early 1980s, the fluxes of total PCBs continued to increase in the Pearl River Delta sediments. There was a concurrent increase of PCB fluxes and gross domestic product per capita in the region from 1980 to 1997, and a decline of agricultural land use was evident at the same time. Apparently, large-scale land transform since the early 1980s as well as emissions from the PCB-containing electrical equipments were responsible for the sharp rise of PCB fluxes in the recent sediments. The difference in the PCB homologue patterns from 1940 to the mid-1970s was probably indicative of the different timelines of PCB usage in Macao/Hong Kong and mainland China and the differenttypes of technical PCBs commercially used. PCBs were detectable in sediments deposited well before the time frame when production of PCBs began (before 1930) and were relatively enriched in the less chlorinated homologue groups (3Cl and 4Cl PCBs), suggesting the downward mobility of lightly chlorinated PCB congeners in the sediment column.

Abstract
The Santa Ana River (SAR), CA and adjacent wetlands have been identified as potential sources of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) to the surf zone at Huntington Beach, CA. A suite of fecal steroids, including coprostanol (COP), epicoprostanol (eCOP), cholesterol (CHOE), cholestanol (CHOA), alpha-cholestanone (aONE), beta-cholestanone (bONE), beta-sitosterol (bSIT), stigmasterol (STIG), stigmastanol (STAN), and campesterol (CAM), were used as chemical markers to examine whether sewage was a significant source of FIB within the lower Santa Ana River watershed. A total of 54 water samples were collected from three locations in the intertidal zone near the mouth of the Santa Ana River at different tidal stages. Steroid ratios in SAR samples were different from those found in raw and treated sewage from a local wastewater treatment plant or in nearby effluent plume and did not appear to be influenced by the sampling location, daily tides, and spring/neap tidal cycle. The characteristics of steroid ratios suggested a diagenetic ratherthan a biogenic source forthe COP content of the samples. The log-based concentrations of COP and FIB in the SAR samples were not significantly correlated, inconsistent with sewage being the source of FIB in the study area. In addition, multivariate statistical analysis showed that the concentrations of FIB were better correlated with bird fecal steroids than with the typical sewage sterols. The results implied that sewage was not a significant source of fecal steroids, and therefore perhaps FIB to the study area. Instead, birds may be one possible source of the intermittently high levels of FIB observed in the lower Santa Ana River watershed and the nearby surf zone.

Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been used as an in situ sampling technique for a wide range of volatile organic chemicals, but SPME field sampling of nonvolatile organic pollutants has not been reported. This paper describes the development of an SPME-based sampling method employing a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-coated (100-microm thickness) fiber as the sorbent phase. The laboratory-calibrated PDMS-coated fibers were used to construct SPME samplers, and field tests were conducted at three coastal locations off southern California to determine the equilibrium sampling time and compare the efficacy of the SPME samplers with that of an Infiltrex 100 water pumping system (Axys Environmental Systems Ltd., Sidney, British Columbia, Canada). p,p'-DDE and o,p'-DDE were the components consistently detected in the SPME samples among 42 polychlorinated biphenyl congeners and 17 chlorinated pesticidestargeted. SPME samplers deployed attwo locations with moderate and high levels of contamination for 18 and 30 d, respectively, attained statistically identical concentrations of p,p'-DDE and o,p'-DDE. In addition, SPME samplers deployed for 23 and 43 d, respectively, at a location of low contamination also contained statistically identical concentrations of p,p'-DDE. These results indicate that equilibrium could be reached within 18 to 23 d. The concentrations of p,p'-DDE, o,p'-DDE, or p,p'-DDD obtained with the SPME samplers and the Infiltrex 100 system were virtually identical. In particular, two water column concentration profiles of p,p'-DDE and o,p'-DDE acquired by the SPME samplers at a highly contaminated site on the Palos Verdes Shelf overlapped with the profiles obtained by the Infiltrex 100 system in 1997. The field tests not only reveal the advantages of the SPME samplers compared to the Infiltrex 100 system and other integrative passive devices but also indicate the need to improve the sensitivity of the SPME-based sampling technique.
