Abstract
A new series of antibacterial and antifungal triazine-derived mono- and di-substituted (symmetrical and unsymmetrical) Schiff-bases and their cobalt(II), copper(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) metal complexes have been synthesized and characterized by their elemental analyses, molar conductances, magnetic moments and IR and electronic spectral measurements. IR spectra indicated the ligands to act as tridentate towards divalent metal ions via a trazine-N, the azomethine-N and, indole-NH and deprotonated-O of salicylaldehyde. The magnetic moments and electronic spectral data suggest octahedral geometry for the Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II)complexes and square-pyramid for Cu(II) complexes. NMR spectral data of the ligands and their diamagnetic zinc(II) complexes well-define their proposed structures/geometries. Elemental analyses data of the ligands and metal complexes agree with their proposed structures/geometries. The synthesized ligands, along with their metal complexes were screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtillis, Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi and for antifungal activity against Trichophyton longifusus, Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, Microsporum canis, Fusarium solani and Candida glaberata. The results of these studies show the metal complexes to be more antibacterial/ antifungal against two or more species as compared to the uncomplexed Schiff-base ligands.

Abstract
A method is described for the preparation of novel cephalexin-derived furanyl-, thiophenyl-, pyrrolyl-, salicylyl- and pyridyl-containing compounds showing potent antibacterial activity. The binding of these newly synthesized antibacterial agents with metal ions such as cobalt(II), copper(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) has been studied and their inhibitory properties against various bacterial species such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae are also reported. These results suggest that metal ions to possess an important role in the designing of metal-based antibacterials and that such complexes are more effective against infectious diseases compared to the uncomplexed drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutritional anemia is one of India's major public health problems. The prevalence of anemia ranges from 33% to 89% among pregnant women and is more than 60% among adolescent girls. Under the anemia prevention and control program of the Government of India, iron and folic acid tablets are distributed to pregnant women, but no such program exists for adolescent girls. OBJECTIVE To assess the status of anemia among pregnant women and adolescent girls from 16 districts of 11 states of India. METHODS A two-stage random sampling method was used to select 30 clusters on the basis of probability proportional to size. Anemia was diagnosed by estimating the hemoglobin concentration in the blood with the use of the indirect cyanmethemoglobin method. RESULTS The survey data showed that 84.9% of pregnant women (n = 6,923) were anemic (hemoglobin < 110 g/L); 13.1% had severe anemia (hemoglobin < 70 g/L), and 60.1% had moderate anemia (hemoglobin > or = 70 to 100 g/L). Among adolescent girls (n = 4,337)from 16 districts, the overall prevalence of anemia (defined as hemoglobin < 120 g/L) was 90.1%, with 7.1% having severe anemia (hemoglobin < 70 g/L). CONCLUSIONS Any intervention strategy for this population must address not only the problem of iron deficiency, but also deficiencies of other micronutrients, such as B12 and folic acid and other possible causal factors.

Abstract
Yellowing and leaf curl symptoms were observed in tomato and pepper fields near Bogor, Java, Indonesia in 2000. Samples were collected from one diseased tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) and three diseased chili pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants. Viral DNA was extracted (2) and tested for the presence of geminiviral DNA-A, DNA-B, and associated satellite DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with previously described primers (1,3,4). The begomovirus DNA-A general primer pair PAL1v1978/PAR1c715 amplified the predicted 1.4-kb DNA fragment from the tomato and two of the chili samples. DNA-B and satellite DNA were not detected using PCR with DNA-B general primer pairs (DNABLC1/DNABLV2 and DNABLC2/DNABLV2) and satellite detection primer pair (Beta01/Beta02). The amplicons from the tomato and from one of the chili samples were cloned and sequenced. On the basis of the 1.4-kb DNA sequences, specific primers were designed to complete the DNA-A sequences. Following sequence assembly, the full-length DNA-A nucleotide sequences were determined as 2,744 nt (GenBank Accession No. DQ083765) for the tomato- and 2,743 nt (GenBank Accession No. DQ083764) for the chili-infecting begomoviruses. Sequence comparisons and analyses were conducted using the DNAMAN sequence analysis software (Lynnon Corporation, Quebec, Canada). The DNA-A of both begomoviruses contained six open reading frames, including two in the virus sense and four in the complementary sense, and the geminivirus conserved nanosequence-TAATATTAC in the loop of the hairpin structure of the intergenic region. Because of their high nucleotide sequence identities of 99%, the tomato- and chili-infecting begomovirus are considered the same virus. When compared by using BLAST with available gem-iniviral sequences in the GenBank database, the DNA-A sequences of the tomato and the chili isolates showed highest nucleotide sequence identity (95%) with the partially sequenced Pepper yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus (GenBank Accession No. AB189849) in the 1,842 nt to 660 nt region and in the 1,841 nt to 659 nt region, respectively. Comparisons with full-length DNA-A sequences of begomoviruses available in the GenBank database indicated high sequence identities of 76 and 77% for the tomato and chili isolates, respectively, with an eggplant isolate of Tomato yellow leaf curl Kanchanaburi virus (GenBank Accession No. AF511530) from Thailand. According to our knowledge, this is the first report of full-length DNA-A sequence of the Pepper yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus and its natural occurrence in tomato and pepper in the Bogor area of Indonesia. Abstract
Intrauterine contraceptives devices have been in use for many years. Although perforation of the uterus by an intrauterine device is not uncommon, intravesical migration with secondary stone formation is a rare complication. We report on a 32-year-old woman in whom an intrauterine contraceptive device (Copper T) migrated from her uterus into the bladder. She had lower urinary tract symptoms for nearly 2 years but sought no treatment. The onset of hematuria and fear of cancer prompted her to seek treatment. On investigation, a vesical stone was discovered that had formed on a copper T contraceptive device. It was removed via suprapubic cystostomy. In any woman in whom an intrauterine device is fitted and who presents with lower urinary tract symptoms, the possibility of intravesical migration of the device should be included in the differential diagnosis.

Abstract
2-Amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole undergoes a condensation reaction with furane-, thiophene- and pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde to form tridentate NNO, NNS and NNN donor Schiff bases. These Schiff bases were further used to obtain complexes of the type [M(L)2]X, where M = Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) or Zn(II), L = L1, L2 or L3 and X = Cl2. The new compounds described here have been characterized by their physical, spectral and analytical data, and have been screened for antibacterial activity against several bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antibacterial potency of the Schiff bases increased upon chelation/complexation in comparison to the uncomplexed Schiff bases against the tested bacterial species thus, opening new approaches to find new ways in the fight against antibiotic-resistant strains.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether fetal and infant growth, as assessed by weight at birth and weight at 1 year, are related to intraocular pressure. METHODS 717 men and women born in Hertfordshire between 1920 and 1930, for whom records of birth weight and weight at 1 year were available, were examined. Visual fields were assessed using the Takagi central 25 degrees 75 point static threshold screening program. Tonometry was performed using the Perkin's tonometer. The disc was assessed by direct ophthalmoscopy through dilated pupils. RESULTS A significant inverse relation was found between systolic blood pressure and birth weight. However, no association was found between birth weight or weight at 1 year and intraocular pressure, cup/disc ratio, or visual field defects. CONCLUSIONS There was no evidence to support fetal or infant growth as being important factors for the subsequent development of raised intraocular pressure.

Abstract
From January 1992 to January 1996, thirty-three patients with persistent clinical and functional knee instability due to anterior cruciate insufficiency underwent ACL reconstruction using central third of the bone-patellar ligament-bone graft. An early experience was presented with average follow-up of 9.8 months (range six to thirty-three months). There thirty-two male and two females. The average age was twenty-four months. Eighty-three percent were involved in football injury. The average time interval from initial injury to operation was twenty-five months. Majority presented with knee pain and giving way. Meniscal tear was the commonest associated injury in more than 70 percent; the lateral meniscus being more frequently injured (42 percent) than the medial meniscus (15 percent). Using modified criteria by Paterson and Trickey (1986), nine patients (27 percent) had good results and twenty-two (67 percent) has satisfactory results. Two patients (6 percent) who had post-operative infection were graded as poor. Functional stability was achieved in twenty-eight (85 percent) and instability persisted in five (15 percent). There were marked clinical improvement in the Lachman and anterior drawer grading post-operatively. The accelerated rehabilitation programme was effective in obtaining early clinical improvement and in reducing post-operative knee stiffness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND epidemiological studies have shown that poor early growth is associated with cardiovascular and other degenerative diseases. This has been explained by programming, whereby undernutrition and other influences which restrict early growth permanently change the structure and physiology of the body. The long-term effects of poor early nutrition on ageing have been demonstrated in animals but not studied in man. OBJECTIVES to determine if poor early growth was associated with increased markers of ageing in later life. METHODS we traced 1428 men and women, born in Hertfordshire between 1920 and 1930, for whom records of early weight were available. 824 (58%) were interviewed at home and 717 (50%) attended clinic for eye examination, audiometry, grip strength measurement, skin thickness ultrasound and anthropometry. RESULTS lower weight at 1 year was associated with increased lens opacity score, higher hearing threshold, reduced grip strength and thinner skin. Visual acuity, macular degeneration and intraocular pressure were not related to early growth. CONCLUSIONS the associations between early growth and markers of ageing suggest that in some systems, ageing may be programmed by events in early life. A potential mechanism is the impaired development of repair systems.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between fetal and infant growth, as measured by birthweight and weight at 1 year and the development of age-related lens opacities. METHODS A total of 1428 men and women who were born in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, between 1920 and 1930, and for whom records of birthweight and weight at 1 year were available, were traced and invited for examination. Of these, 717 (50%) attended for ophthalmic examination. After dilation with tropicamide 1%, lens opacities were graded using the Lens Opacities Classification System (LOCS) III. RESULTS In this population of English men and women aged 64 to 74 years, most opacities were of the nuclear type. There was no association between birthweight and nuclear lens opacities. Weight at 1 year was negatively correlated with nuclear opacity score in adult life (P=0.001). Subjects in the highest tertile for weight at 1 year (>23 pounds) had an odds ratio of 0.35 (95% confidence interval, 0.17 to 0.74) for having a significant nuclear lens opacity (LOCS score of > or = 3) compared with people in the lowest tertile for weight at 1 year (<21 pounds). This association remained after controlling for age, sex, smoking, social class, adult height, and diabetes. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first time that such an association has been reported; it needs to be replicated in other populations. It could provide part of the explanation for the observed excess risk of cataract in developing countries.

Abstract
We investigated the relationship between visual acuity, early growth and eye disease in a retrospective cohort study of 700 individuals in North Hertfordshire. Records of birth weight and weight at one year were used to determine early growth. We measured visual acuity and age-related eye diseases using standard instruments in those same individuals (now aged 63 to 73). Visual acuity below the legal threshold for driving in the UK (6/11 or poorer) was present in 13% of subjects. There was no clear association between birth weight or weight at one year and visual acuity. Vision impairment was found to be associated with refractive error, cataract, age-related maculopathy, and elevated macular threshold. After controlling for the effects of eye disease, increasing age remained a significant predictor of poorer visual acuity.
