Abstract
Seven cadmium(II) arenedisulfonate compounds, namely [Cd(2,2'-bpy)(2)(H(2)O)(peds)].4H(2)O (1), [Cd(2)(2,2'-bpy)(4)(H(2)O)(2)(1,5nds)](1,5nds).4H(2)O (2), [Cd(cyclam)(1,5nds)](2) (3), ([Cd(inia)(2)(H(2)O)(2)(2,6nds)].4H(2)O)(n)(4), ([Cd(inia)(2)(H(2)O)(2)(bpds)].4H(2)O)(n)(5), ([Cd(2)(inia)(4)(H(2)O)(3)(peds)(2)].2H(2)O)(n)(6), and [Cd(1,5nds)(H(2)O)(2)](n) (7), where 2,2'-bpy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, inia = isonicotinamide, nds = naphthalenedisulfonate, bpds = 4,4'-biphenyldisulfonate, and peds = 4,4'-phenyletherdisulfonate, have been obtained from aqueous solution by using similar procedures and structurally characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. In 1, the peds anion coordinates as a monodentate ligand, leading to a mononuclear unit. In 2 and 3, the 1,5nds anions coordinate as mu(2)-bridging ligands in different modes, producing charged or neutral dinuclear clusters. In 4 and 5, 2,6nds and bpds behave as mu(2)-spacers, resulting in 1-dimensional polymers. While in 6, the peds acts both as terminal and bridging ligands with the SO(3)(-) groups being either monodentate or mu(2)-bridging, creating a knotted 1-dimensional polymer with dinuclear clusters as the repeating units. In 7, 1,5nds acts as a bridging ligand with each SO(3)(-) coordinated as a mu(2)-bridging group to adjacent Cd(II) centers, leading to a 2-dimensional polymer. Together with the reported ([Cu(en)(2)(1,5nds)].2H(2)O)(n) (8), all of the six possible coordination modes adopted by organodisulfonate anions, on the assumption that each SO(3)(-) group could be monodentate or mu(2)-bridging, are realized by introducing nitrogen-containing organic ligands as auxiliaries.

Abstract
In the title compound [alternative name: poly[silver(I)-micro-(3-amino-2-chloropyridine)-micro-nitrato]], [Ag(NO(3))(C(5)H(5)ClN(2))](n) the Ag(I) atom is in an irregular AgN(2)O(3) geometry, surrounded by one pyridyl N atom [Ag-N 2.283 (5) A], one amine N atom [Ag-N 2.364 (6) A] and three O atoms from different nitrate ions [Ag-O 2.510 (6)-2.707 (6) A]. The Ag ions are bridged by the 3-amino-2-chloropyridine ligands into helical chains. Adjacent uniform chiral chains are further interlinked through the NO(3) bridges into an interesting two-dimensional coordination network in the solid.

Abstract
A cinchonine imprinted chiral monolithic column was prepared for the separation of the diastereomers of cinchonine and cinchonidine by in-situ molecular imprinting technique. This type of molecularly imprinted column can be prepared only by a single-step procedure. In order to improve the selectivity and efficiency, a new in-situ molecular imprinting polymerization system was introduced by adopting porogenic solvents of toluene and 1-dodecanol with relatively low polarity and appropriate ratios of polymerization mixture. Diastereomers of cinchonine and cinchonidine were fully separated both under isocratic and gradient elutions on the chiral monolithic column. The broad peak shown in isocratic elution could be improved in gradient elution. Effects of mobile phase composition, flow rate and temperature on retention and separation factor were investigated. Due to the large throughput pores in the chiral monolithic column, low backpressure was observed during the separation process and a separation factor of 3.18 was obtained at 1.0 mL/min. The increase of temperature could improve the separation factor and a maximum separation factor of 5.40 was obtained at 60 degrees C.

Abstract
In the solid state, interlocking of the lateral phen ligands at the acute angle sites of the molecular [Cu2(bpa)2-(phen)2(H2O)]2 rhombi via aromatic pi-pi stacking interactions into the cavities of the adjacent rhombi generates laminated polyrotaxanes that are further assembled into a 3D network via similar interactions between the phen ligands at the obtuse angle sites.

Abstract
Four copper complexes with hydroxylated bipyridyl-like ligands, namely [Cu(2)(ophen)(2)] (1), [Cu(4)(ophen)(4)(tp)] (2), [Cu(4)(obpy)(4)(tp)] (3), and [Cu(4)(obpy)(4)(dpdc)].2H(2)O (4), (Hophen=2-hydroxy-1,10-phenanthroline, Hobpy=6-hydroxy-2,2'-bipyridine, tp=terephthalate, dpdc=diphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylate) have been synthesized hydrothermally. X-ray single-crystal structural analyses of these complexes reveal that 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) ligands are hydroxylated into ophen or obpy during the reaction, which provides structural evidence for the long-time argued Gillard mechanism. The dinuclear copper(I) complex 1 has three supramolecular isomers in the solid state, in which short copper-copper distances (2.66-2.68 A) indicate weak metal-metal bonding interactions. Each of the mixed-valence copper(i,ii) complexes 2-4 consists of a pair of [Cu(2)(ophen)(2)](+) or [Cu(2)(obpy)(2)](+) fragments bridged by a dicarboxylate ligand into a neutral tetranuclear dumbbell structure. Dinuclear 1 is an intermediate in the formation of 2 and can be converted into 2 in the presence of additional copper(II) salt and tp ligands under hydrothermal conditions. In addition to the ophen-centered pi-->pi* excited-state emission, 1 shows strong emissions at ambient temperature, which may be tentatively assigned as an admixture of copper-centered d-->s,p and MLCT excited states.

Abstract
The neoglycoproteins that consist of human serum albumin (HSA) modified with mannose 6-phosphate ([M6P]x-HSA) were synthesized, and they showed high binding property to hepatic stellate cells (HSC) by immunohistochemical analysis. In addition, an increased substitution (X) of 6-phosphated mannose (M6P) was associated with an increased accumulation in HSC. So the [M6P]x-HSA might be a carrier to deliver drugs to HSC. The antifibrotic drug, glycyrrhetin, was chosen to conjugate to M6P(26)-HSA. The result suggests there were 6 approximately 7 glycyrrhetin molecules having been conjugated to the carrier. Targeting glycyrrhetin to HSC might reduce its adverse affects and increase the efficacy.

Abstract
Two complexes, [Zn(Him)2(mpa)] (1) and [Zn(Him)2(tpa)]·H2O (2) (Him = imidazole, mpa = m-phthalate, and tpa = terephthalate), have been prepared and structurally characterized, revealing two different three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded molecular architectures. Each features [Zn(Him)2(dicarboxylate)] zigzag polymeric chains and intermolecular N–H…O hydrogen bonds between the uncoordinated Him nitrogen atoms and carboxylate oxygen atoms that are similar to the carboxylate–histidine–zinc triad systems in zinc(II) enzymes. The lattice water molecules in complex (2) play a critical role in the formation of a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded molecular architecture.

Abstract
The method is based on the enhancement effect of the resonance light scattering (RLS) due to the long range assembly of neutral red (NR) on the molecular surface of DNA. The RLS of NR is greatly enhanced by DNA in the pH range of 5.0-7.0. The enhanced intensity of RLS at 335.0 nm is proportional to the concentration of DNA in the range 0-600 ng.mL-1. The detection limit is 12.8 ng.mL-1. This method is simple, rapid and has been applied to the determination of DNA in mixed samples with satisfactory results.

The resonance light scattering (RLS) spectra of Rosaniline with DNA have been studied. The RLS of Rosaniline is greatly enhanced by DNA in pH range of 10.5-10.8. There is a resonance light scattering peak ofat 485 nm, and the enhanced intensity of RLS at this wavelength is proportional to the concentration of DNA. The linear range of the calibration graph is 0-1.00 mg.L-1 with the correlation coefficient of 0.9980. The detection limit is 14.2 ng.mL-1. The relative standard deviation(n = 10) was within 2.1%. This method is simple, rapid and has been applied to the determination of DNA in mixed samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract
Seven Group 1 and Group 2 1,5-naphthalenedisulfonates (1,5-nds) have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. For Group 1 metal complexes, with M = Li(+) (1), Na(+) (2) and K(+) (3), all crystallize in the same space group (P2(1)/c) with the same composition, [M(2)(1,5-nds)(H(2)O)(2)]. They adopt similar three-dimensional packing arrangements with the metal-sulfonate inorganic layers pillared by naphthalene rings. However, the coordination behavior of three metal cations toward the SO(3)(-) group and water molecule are different, resulting in different architectures for the inorganic portion. For Group 2 complexes with M = Mg(2+) (4), Ca(2+) (5), Sr(2+) (6) and Ba(2+) (7), Mg(2+) shows no direct coordination by the SO(3)(-) group while Ca(2+) is coordinated by four SO(3)(-) groups and a two-dimensional network is formed. Complexes (6) and (7) are isostructural, adopting the same three-dimensional, inorganic-organic pillared framework as seen for (1)-(3). The coordination behavior of the metal cations in these structures neatly illustrates the increase in coordination strength with decreasing charge/radius ratio for Group 1 and Group 2 metal cations with large organic anions.

Abstract
The Yr9 gene, which confers resistance to stripe rust caused by Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici (P. s. tritici) and originated from rye, is present in many wheat cultivars. To develop molecular markers for Yr9, a Yr9 near-isogenic line, near-isogenic lines with nine other Yr genes, and the recurrent wheat parent 'Avocet Susceptible' were evaluated for resistance in the seedling stage to North American P. s. tritici races under controlled temperature in the greenhouse. The resistance gene analog polymorphism (RGAP) technique was used to identify molecular markers for Yr9. The BC7:F2 and BC7:F3 progeny, which were developed by backcrossing the Yr9 donor wheat cultivar Clement with 'Avocet Susceptible', were evaluated for resistance to stripe rust races. Genomic DNA was extracted from 203 BC7:F2 plants and used for cosegregation analysis. Of 16 RGAP markers confirmed by cosegregation analysis, 4 were coincident with Yr9 and 12 were closely linked to Yr9 with a genetic distance ranging from 1 to 18 cM. Analyses of nulli-tetrasomic 'Chinese Spring' lines with the codominant RGAP marker Xwgp13 confirmed that the markers and Yr9 were located on chromosome 1B. Six wheat cultivars reported to have 1B/1R wheat-rye translocations and, presumably, Yr9, and two rye cultivars were inoculated with four races of P. s. tritici and tested with 9 of the 16 RGAP markers. Results of these tests indicate that 'Clement', 'Aurora', 'Lovrin 10', 'Lovrin 13', and 'Riebesel 47/51' have Yr9 and that 'Weique' does not have Yr9. The genetic information and molecular markers obtained from this study should be useful in cloning Yr9, in identifying germplasm that may have Yr9, and in using marker-assisted selection for combining Yr9 with other stripe rust resistance genes.Key words: molecular markers, Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici, resistance gene analog polymorphism, Triticum aestivum.

Abstract
Eight interesting microporous networks based on 2-D [Ag(mu(3)-hmt)] (hmt = hexamethylenetetramine) layers were obtained via rational synthetic strategies. Out of these products isolated and structurally characterized, six present a metal-to-hmt molar ratio of 1:1 and contain 2-D coordination layers assembled by 2-D Ag(I)-hmt networks with aromatic monocarboxylates, which are [Ag(mu(3)-hmt)(p-nba)].2.5H(2)O (1), [Ag(mu(3)-hmt)(m-nba)].2.5H(2)O (2), [Ag(mu(3)-hmt)(dnba)] (3), [Ag(mu(3)-hmt)(alpha-hna)](EtOH) (4), [Ag(mu(3)-hmt)(beta-hna)](EtOH) (5), and [Ag(mu(3)-hmt)(noa)](H(2)O)(EtOH) (6) (p-nba = 4-nitrobenzoate, m-nba = 3-nitrobenzoate, dnba = 3,5-dinitrobenzoate, alpha-hna = 1-hydroxy-2-naphthate, beta-hna = 3-hydroxy-2-naphthate, and noa = 2-naphthoxyacetate), and two present a metal-to-hmt molar ratio of 2:1 and contain 3-D microporous networks constructed from the 2-D Ag-hmt layers and linear dicarboxylates as molecular pillars, which are [Ag(2)(mu(3)-hmt)(2)(fa)].4H(2)O (7) and [Ag(2)(mu(3)-hmt)(2)(adp)].8H(2)O (8) (fa = fumarate and adp = adipate). The result shows that the pore sizes may be tuned with different carboxylates. Gas adsorption measurements were performed to confirm the microporosity of these coordination open frameworks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Our previous studies have shown that Cryptosporidium parvum induces biliary epithelial cell apoptosis in vivo and causes apoptosis in bystander uninfected biliary epithelia in vitro. We analyzed C. parvum-induced nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappaB) activation in human biliary epithelial cells and assessed its relevance to epithelial cell apoptosis. METHODS In vitro models of cryptosporidial infection using a human biliary epithelial cell line were used to assay C. parvum- induced NF-kappaB activation and associated apoptosis. RESULTS Degradation of I(kappa)B and nuclear translocation of the NF-kappaB family of proteins (p65 and p50) were observed in the biliary epithelial cell cultures directly exposed to the parasite. Activation of NF-kappaB was found only in directly infected cells (but not in bystander uninfected cells). A time-dependent secretion of a known NF-kappaB gene product, interleukin 8, from infected cell cultures was detected. C. parvum-induced biliary epithelial cell apoptosis was limited to bystander uninfected cells. In contrast, inhibition of NF-kappaB activation resulted in apoptosis in directly infected cells and significantly enhanced C. parvum-induced apoptosis in bystander uninfected cells. CONCLUSIONS These observations support the concept that, while C. parvum triggers host cell apoptosis in bystander uninfected biliary epithelial cells, which may limit spread of the infection, it directly activates the NF-kappaB/I(kappa)B system in infected biliary epithelia thus protecting infected cells from death and facilitating parasite survival and propagation.

Abstract
Effects of estrogen on thermoregulatory vasomotion and heat-escape behavior were investigated in ovariectomized female rats supplemented with estrogen (replaced estrogen rats) or control saline (low estrogen rats). First, we measured tail temperature of freely moving rats at ambient temperatures (T(a)) between 13 and 31 degrees C. Tail temperature of the low estrogen rats was higher than that of the replaced estrogen rats at T(a) between 19 and 25 degrees C, indicating that the low estrogen rats exhibit more skin vasodilation than the replaced estrogen rats. There was no significant difference in oxygen consumption and core temperature between the two groups. Second, we analyzed heat-escape behaviors in a hot chamber where rats could obtain cold air by moving in and out of a reward area. The low estrogen rats kept T(a) at a lower level than did the replaced estrogen rats. These results imply that the lack of estrogen facilitates heat dissipation both by skin vasodilation and by heat-escape behavior. Ovariectomized rats may mimic climacteric hot flushes not only for autonomic skin vasomotor activity but also for thermoregulatory behavior.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and alphabeta blocker in combination with a calcium antagonist on the progression of renal function and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in patients with chronic renal insufficiency and hypertension. The 65 subjects in this study were recruited from a cohort of 316 patients. The main criteria for inclusion were echocardiographic diagnosis of LVH (posterior wall thickness >12 mm) and serum creatinine of more than 1.5 mg/dl. Antihypertensive treatments were switched to the combination of amlodipine at a dose of 5 mg and benazepril at a dose of 2.5 mg daily or the combination of amlodipine at a dose of 5 mg and arotinolol at a dose of 20 mg daily at random irrespective of whether or not patients had been previously treated. The follow-up period was 2 years. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly reduced from 150/90 +/- 15/11 mmHg to 130/75 +/- 11/9 mmHg (ACE) and the levels of serum creatinine were increased significantly from 1.8 +/- 0.3 to 2.0 +/- 0.4 mg/dl (ACE). In the alphabeta-blocker group, these two values were similar and no significant changes were found. PWT was decreased from 14.2 +/- 0.6 to 12.9 +/- 0.3 cm in alphabeta blocker but was not significantly decreased in the ACE inhibitor group. In conclusion, combination therapy with a calcium antagonist and abeta blocker might be effective treatment for hypertensive patients with chronic renal insufficiency and left ventricular hypertrophy.

Abstract
The effect of column temperature on enantiomeric resolutions of tryptophan, warfarin and ketoprofen was investigated on bovine and human serum albumin (BSA and HSA) stationary phases, which were synthesized with s-triazine as the activator. It was observed that the entropy change made a great contribution to the separation of those enantiomers on albumin chiral stationary phases. The column temperature for the maximal resolution of tryptophan on the BSA stationary phase prepared by this method was about 35 degrees C, which was not 24 degrees C as reported for the BSA stationary phase synthesized with glutaric dialdehyde as the activator. This results may come from the different conformation of the immobilized BSA and HSA due to the different coupling methods used. On the other hand, it was indicated that the resolution of enantiomers on beta-CD chiral stationary phase was mainly contributed from the change of enthalpy, which means the resolution of chiral solutes on albumin and beta-CD stationary phases has different thermodynamic behaviors.
