Abstract
BACKGROUND The epidemic phenomenon leading to a progressive increase in benzodiazepine prescriptions represents a challenge for healthcare systems. In the hospital setting, indicators of prescription variation and potential of overuse are lacking and are rarely monitored. Inter-hospital monitoring/benchmarking, via peer-pressure, can foster the motivation to change. The aim of this investigation was to analyse whether, the reduction in new benzodiazepine prescriptions obtained thanks to a Choosing Wisely campaign, also contributed to reducing inter-hospital variation. METHODS Secondary analysis of a multicentre longitudinal intervention in a network of five teaching hospitals in Switzerland. We set out to explore the effect, on inter-hospital benzodiazepine prescription variation, of a continuous monitoring/benchmarking strategy, which was proven effective in reducing the intra-hospital prescription rate. The variance was used to assess inter-hospital variation. To investigate the impact of the intervention a segmented regression analysis of interrupted time series was performed. RESULTS A total of 36 299 admissions over 42 months were analysed (1 July 2014 to 31 December 2017). Before the intervention a significant constant upward trend in inter-hospital variability was found (+0.901; SE 0.441; P < .05). After the intervention, the variance trend line significantly changed, decreasing by -0.257 (SE 0.005: P < .001) and producing by December 2017, a 27% absolute reduction. CONCLUSIONS Thanks to a multimodal approach based on monitoring-benchmarking, a significant reduction in inter-hospital benzodiazepine prescription variation was obtained. Aligning to peer strategy is a spontaneous consequence of open benchmarking that can be used to convert a variation-based suspicion of overuse, into an occasion to actively review prescription habits.

Abstract
The anterior digastric muscle belly (ADMB) may present significant variations of substantial surgical importance. We present an unusual complex bilateral asymmetry of an accessory ADMB found when dissecting the submental area in a 72-year-old Greek male cadaver. A rare variant was recognized in the submental area constituted by a combination of bilateral asymmetry of the ADMB with unilateral absence of the intermediate tendon. The complex variant caused an obvious morphological asymmetry in the submental area. Such muscular variations may alter the surgical approach to the submental region. Clinicians involved in the treatment of this area should be aware of any possible variant, particularly when dealing with neck mass patients.

Abstract
Background Mothers and their offspring may benefit from lifestyle interventions during pregnancy. We systematically reviewed the literature to map and evaluate the quality of long-term offspring outcomes in follow-up cohorts of randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Methods We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects and Cochrane Central (until March 2019) for all RCTs evaluating any lifestyle (diet or exercise) intervention during pregnancy and their follow-up cohorts. Two reviews evaluated the extracted outcomes using two standardised assessment tools, one for quality of reporting (score range 0-6) and another for the variation in outcome selection. We extracted data in duplicate and reported using natural frequencies, medians, ranges, means and standard deviation (SD). Results We captured 30 long-term offspring outcomes reported in six articles (four studies). Offspring anthropometric measurements were the most commonly reported outcomes. There was a large variation in the measurement tools used. The mean overall quality score for outcome reporting was 3.33 (SD 1.24), with poor reporting of secondary outcomes and limited justification for the choice of the reported outcomes. Most studies showed selective reporting for both their primary and secondary outcomes. Conclusion The quality of reporting for long-term offspring outcomes following lifestyle interventions in pregnancy is varied with evidence of selective outcome reporting. Developing a core outcome set will help to reduce the variations in outcome reporting to optimise future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We identified variation in delivery of guideline recommended care at our institution, and undertook a project to design a heart failure (HF) model of care. AIM To maximise time patients with HF spend well in the community by delivering best practice guidelines to reduce variation in care improving overall outcomes. METHODS This quality improvement project focused on reducing variation in process measures of care. The HF model of care included electronic HF care bundles, a patient education pack with staff training on delivering HF patient education, referral of all HF patients to the Hospital Admissions Risk Program for phone call within 72 h, and a nurse-pharmacist early follow-up clinic. Outcomes were assessed using interrupted time series analyses. RESULTS The pre-intervention group comprised 1585 patients, and post-intervention 1720 patients with a primary diagnosis of HF admitted under general cardiology and general medicine. Interrupted time series analysis indicated 30-day readmissions did not change in overall trend (-0.2% per month, P = 0.479) but a significant immediate step-down of 7.8% was seen (P = 0.018). For 90-day readmissions, a significant trend reduction over the time period was seen (-0.6% per month, P = 0.017) with a significant immediate step-down (-9.4%, P = 0.001). Emergency department representations, in-patient mortality and length of stay did not change significantly. Improvements in process measures were seen at audit. CONCLUSION This model of care resulted in overall trends of reductions in 30- and 90-day readmissions, without increasing emergency department representations, mortality and length of stay. This model will be adapted as the electronic medical record is introduced at our institution.

Abstract
PURPOSE A previous study reported a novel c.544_618del75bp mutation in exon 7 of the PRPF31 gene in a Chinese family with autosomal dominant retinal pigmentosa (ADRP). However, the selected pedigree was a small part of the whole family and the function of the c.544_618del75bp mutation was not explored deeply. The aim of the present study was to validate the previous results and explore the functional significance of the c.544_618del75bp mutation. METHODS We extended the size of the ADRP pedigree and sequenced DNA and cDNA of the PRPF31 gene for all members of the family and 100 healthy controls. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis was performed on the cDNA of patients in the family and cell culture, plasmids transfection and western blot analysis were done to evaluate the functional effect of the mutation in vitro. RESULTS Sanger sequencing showed that the mutation was present in all patients and absent in all normal individuals, except for participant III-9. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that the c.544_618del75bp mutation caused a 25 amino acid deletion in the PRPF31 protein. In addition, the mRNA expression assay revealed that the mRNA expression level of the PRPF31 and RP9 genes were significantly lower in RP patients than controls (p < 0.05). Finally, the in vitro transfection assay demonstrated that the mRNA expression level of the mutant transfection group was significantly lower than the wild-type transfection group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggested that the c.544_618del75bp mutation in the PRPF31 gene was a causative mutation in this ADRP family and affected the expression of RP9 gene by influencing the formation of U4/U6-U5 tri-snRNP, eventually leading to the occurrence of RP.

Abstract
A variation of subscapularis tear has been identified, named floating subscapularis, where the tendon is completely detached from the lesser tuberosity but is continuous with the tissue covering the bicipital groove. An accurate diagnosis can be made using arthroscopic observation with passive external and internal rotation of the affected shoulder, which shows mismatched movement between the humerus and the subscapularis tendon. The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of this particular tear pattern. Clinical records during the study period (from January 2011 to December 2017) were retrospectively examined. Overall, 1295 arthroscopic rotator cuff repair procedures were performed. Among these, the subscapularis tendon was repaired in 448 cases, and 27 cases were diagnosed as floating subscapularis. The prevalence of floating subscapularis was 6% in the subscapularis repair population. This particular tear pattern has not previously been described and it seems to be ignored. The floating subscapularis is thought to be the tear of the deep layer preserving the superficial layer connected to the greater tuberosity by fibrous extension of the soft tissue covering the bicipital groove.

Abstract
A total of 239 isolates of blast (Pyricularia oryzae Cavara) collected from northern and central Vietnam showed a wide variation in pathogenicity based on the reaction patterns to 25 differential varieties (DVs) harboring 23 resistance genes and susceptible cultivar Lijiangxintuanheigu (LTH). The frequencies of isolates virulent toward DVs for Pish, Pik-m, Pi1, Pik-h, Pik, Pik-p, Pi7(t), Pi9(t), Piz-5, Pita-2, and Pita were low, but they were high for DVs for Pib, Pit, Pia, Pii, Pi3, Pi5(t), Pik-s, Piz, Piz-t, Pi12(t), Pi19(t), and Pi20(t). Isolates were classified into three cluster groups Ia, Ib, and II based on reaction patterns to DVs and LTH. The frequencies of isolates virulent toward 11 DVs for Pik-m, Pi1, Pik-h, Pik, Pik-p, Pi7(t), Pi9(t), Piz, Piz-5, Pita-2, and Pita in cluster II and DV for Piz-t were higher and lower than those of Ia and Ib, respectively. The frequencies to DVs for Pii, Pi3, Pi5(t), and Piz-t were different between clusters Ia and Ib. Clusters Ia and Ib were distributed with similar frequencies in the northeast, north central, and south central coast regions, but the frequencies among three cluster groups in the Red River Delta and northwest regions were different. This means that the blast races in these two regions were different from the others. Overall, the blast isolates were categorized into 153 races. Among them, 26 were selected as a set of standard differential blast isolates for characterizing 23 resistance genes and developing a differential system in Vietnam.

Abstract
The keratin-associated proteins (KAPs) are constituents of cashmere fibers and variation in many KAP genes (KRTAPs) has been found to be associated with fiber traits. The gene encoding the high-sulphur KAP28-1 has been described in sheep, but it has not been identified in the goat genome. In this study, a 255-bp open reading frame on goat chromosome 1 was identified using a search of similar sequence to ovine KRTAP28-1, and that would if transcribed and translated encode a high sulphur KAP. Based on the analysis of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplicons for the goat nucleotide sequences in 385 Longdong cashmere goats in China, five unique banding patterns were detected using single-stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP). These represented five DNA sequences (named variants A to E) and they had the highest resemblance to KRTAP28-1 sequences from sheep, suggesting A-E are variants of caprine KRTAP28-1. DNA sequencing revealed a 2 or 4-bp deletion and eleven nucleotide sequence differences, including four non-synonymous substitutions. Of the four common variants (A, B, C and D) found in these goats, the presence of variant A was associated with decreased mean fiber diameter and this effect appeared to be additive. These results indicate that caprine KRTAP28-1 variation might have value as a molecular marker for reducing cashmere mean fiber diameter.

Abstract
The medial circumflex femoral artery (MCFA) typically presents as a major branch of the profunda femoris artery or it can also directly originate from the common femoral artery. Many anatomical variations of the MCFA have been described due to their clinical significance. We herein report a case of an unusual anatomical variation of the MCFA crossing anterior to the femoral vein that led to iatrogenic arteriovenous fistula formation after cardiac catheterization. The identification of such rare vascular anatomical variations is of great importance when attempting femoral arterial or venous puncture in order to minimize unnecessary complications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To evaluate the variations of the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) in asymptomatic young adults and their relationship to SIJ degeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 860 SIJs were retrospectively evaluated in 430 abdominal computed tomographies (CT) of abdominal pain cases. The study population consisted of 430 patients (176 female, 254 male) aged 20-45 years with abdominal pain. The anatomical variations of the SIJ were classified as (1) accessory sacroiliac joint, (2) iliosacral complex, (3) bipartite iliac bony plate, (4) semicircular defects, (5) crescent-like iliac bony plate, and (6) ossification center. The CT findings of SIJ degeneration included joint space narrowing, sclerosis, subcortical cysts, vacuum phenomenon, and osteophytes. Chi-square and cross tabulation tests were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The iliosacral complex was the most common (bilateral) anatomical variation (7.7%, n = 66). A total of 71 SIJ degenerations were detected in cases with anatomical variations. They were determined in 22 (2.6%) iliosacral complex, 19 (2.2%) bipartite iliac bony plate, 15 (1.7%) accessory sacroiliac joint, 6 (0.7%) semicircular defect, 5 (0.6%) crescent-like iliac bony plate, and 4 (0.5%) ossification center cases. CONCLUSION We found that iliosacral complex was the most common SIJ variation in asymptomatic young adults and also that there was significantly more SIJ degeneration among subjects with anatomical variations of the SIJ than those without. SIJ degeneration was most common in subjects with the iliosacral complex variation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between sperm mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (ND5) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 6 (ND6) gene variations and total fertilisation failure (TFF). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 232 sperm samples at the fresh in vitro fertilisation (IVF) cycle or the half-intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycle were collected for this retrospective controlled study on Han Chinese people between July 2011 and April 2014. Of the 232 total samples, 45 were from the IVF-TFF group and 187 were from couples with normal fertilisation (fertilisation rate > 50%). The mitochondrial ND5 and ND6 gene variations and sperm haplotypes were confirmed using nested PCR and DNA sequencing. RESULTS Ten homozygous variations were newly discovered, namely C12417T, T12441A, C12543A, C13650A, C13765A, T13769C, C13775T, A13776G, C13785A and C13845T. The gene variation rates of six sites, C12417T, C13650A, C13765A, T13769C, C13785A and C13845T, in the TFF group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). There were 231 heterozygous variations discovered; however, only nine heterozygous sites (12441, 12561, 12735, 13164, 13743, 13812, 13928, 14172 and 14368) had significantly higher gene variation rates than those in the control group (p < 0.05). In addition, the results showed that haplogroup C did not affect TFF (p > 0.05), and the fertilisation failure rates of haplogroup R and haplogroup D4a were both higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested that the ND5 and ND6 gene variations are correlated with TFF. Furthermore, this study indicated that haplogroup R and haplogroup D4a might be risk factors for TFF.

Abstract
Life-history traits or "fitness components"-such as age and size at maturity, fecundity and fertility, age-specific rates of survival, and life span-are the major phenotypic determinants of Darwinian fitness. Analyzing the evolution and genetics of these phenotypic targets of selection is central to our understanding of adaptation. Due to its simple and rapid life cycle, cosmopolitan distribution, ease of maintenance in the laboratory, well-understood evolutionary genetics, and its versatile genetic toolbox, the "vinegar fly" Drosophila melanogaster is one of the most powerful, experimentally tractable model systems for studying "life-history evolution." Here, I review what has been learned about the evolution and genetics of life-history variation in D. melanogaster by drawing on numerous sources spanning population and quantitative genetics, genomics, experimental evolution, evolutionary ecology, and physiology. This body of work has contributed greatly to our knowledge of several fundamental problems in evolutionary biology, including the amount and maintenance of genetic variation, the evolution of body size, clines and climate adaptation, the evolution of senescence, phenotypic plasticity, the nature of life-history trade-offs, and so forth. While major progress has been made, important facets of these and other questions remain open, and the D. melanogaster system will undoubtedly continue to deliver key insights into central issues of life-history evolution and the genetics of adaptation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about how daily fluctuations in health behaviors relate to chronic disease risk. The goal of this study was to examine whether variability in physical activity, caloric intake, and sleep is related to body composition (body mass index and body fat percentage). METHODS Healthy adults (N = 103; 64% female) were monitored for 7 days to assess physical activity (SenseWear Armband), caloric intake (daily food diaries), and sleep duration and timing (Actiwatch Spectrum). Data were analyzed using correlations (between- and within-subjects correlations) and regression. RESULTS The results demonstrated that variabilities in physical activity, caloric intake, and sleep were unrelated. Caloric intake and sleep variability were unrelated to body composition. At greater levels of physical activity variability, any level of physical activity was protective for body composition. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that among healthy adults, variabilities in health behaviors may be independent of each other, and physical activity variability may be more strongly related to body composition among those who are less active.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Left renal vein (LRV) variations occur in 0.8-10.2% of the population. The most common LRV variations are retroaortic left renal vein (RLRV) and circumaortic left renal vein (CLRV). The purpose of this study is to determine the frequency of LRV variations in a large series on computed tomography (CT) and to investigate the association between LRV and malignancy development. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between January 2015 and January 2017, an abdominal CT examination of 12,341 (5505 female, 6836 male) patients was evaluated retrospectively in this study. Patients' clinical and demographic data were recorded using the Hospital Information System. RESULTS Left renal vein variations were detected in 314 (2.54%) of the 12,341 patients within the study. Of the 314 cases found to have LRV variations, 227 (1.84%) had RLRV, and 87 (0.70%) had CLRV. There was no statistical difference in total LRV variations (p = 0.083) and CLRV variation (p = 0.96) groups in terms of gender. However, the RLRV variation was found to be 1.32 times higher in males than in females (p = 0.039). Of the 314 patients with LRV variations, 73 (23.2%) had any sort of concomitant malignancy. CONCLUSIONS A high incidence of malignancy was detected in patients with LRV variations. Of the LRV variations, RLRV variation is more common than CLRV variation. The presence of total LRV variations and CLRV variations is not associated with gender; whereas the presence of RLRV variation is more common in males.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this retrospective study, we aimed to determine the variations of kidney arteries and veins in kidney donor patients who underwent preoperative, computed tomography angiography (CTA). MATERIALS AND METHODS We analysed kidney CTA findings of 91 donor nephrectomy patients operated from July 2016 through December 2017. Demographics, vascular diameters, abnormalities, numbers, branching variations, routing variations of arteries, and veins were assessed according to CTA images. We also compared the radiological findings with perioperative findings. Two radiologists evaluated CTA images, and the same surgical team performed all donor nephrectomies by laparoscopic approach. RESULTS Ninety-one of the 96 patients involved to study. Forty-six (50.5%) patients were female. Thirty-five (38.4%) of 91 cases had accessory arteries. Seven (7.6%) right, 1 (1.1%) left and 8 (8.7%) bilateral double hilar artery was observed on CTA. No statistically significant difference was observed in the evaluation of the side of accessory/polar arteries (p > 0.05), and in the evaluation of the distribution of arterial/venous variations according to perioperative findings (p > 0.05). However, in the evaluation of CTA images, we found that the diameter of the kidney artery and vein differed according to gender and side. CONCLUSIONS The knowledge of the vascular variations of the kidney is essential for surgeons performing kidney transplantation. It is also essential for urologist and vascular surgeons. Incompatible with the literature, the right kidney has more vascular variations and, one kidney artery is found in the majority of Turkish kidney donor patients.

Abstract
Improvement of agricultural species has exploited the genetic variation responsible for complex quantitative traits. Much of the functional variation is regulatory, in cis-regulatory elements and trans-acting factors that ultimately contribute to gene expression differences. However, the identification of gene regulatory network components that, when modulated, will increase plant productivity or resilience, is challenging, yet essential to provide increased predictive power for genome engineering approaches that are likely to benefit useful traits. Here, we discuss the opportunities and limitations of using data obtained from gene coexpression, transcription factor binding, and genome-wide association mapping analyses to predict regulatory interactions that impact crop improvement. It is apparent that a combination of information from these data types is necessary for the reliable identification and utilization of important regulatory interactions that underlie complex agronomic traits.

Abstract
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most severe microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). The (CA)n microsatellite variation of the aldose reductase (ALR) gene has been indicated to be associated with DR in previous studies; however, the results were inconclusive. To provide a more precise evaluation of the association between the (CA)n variations of ALR and the risk for DR, a meta-analysis was performed in the present study. Relevant articles were retrieved from the PubMed, Embase, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure and Cochrane Library databases. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to evaluate the strength of the associations. The present meta-analysis included 17 studies comprising 1,575 DM patients with retinopathy and 1,741 DM patients without retinopathy. The results indicated that the Z-2 allele was a risk factor for DR in Asian (OR=1.82, 95% CI: 1.16-2.86, P=0.009) and Caucasian (OR=2.08, 95% CI: 1.14-3.79, P=0.02) populations, as well as in type 1 diabetes (T1D; OR=3.42, 95% CI: 1.46-8.04, P=0.005) and type 2 diabetes (T2D; OR=1.66, 95% CI: 1.05-2.63, P=0.03). Furthermore, the Z+2 allele was determined to be a protective factor for DR in Caucasian individuals (OR=0.50, 95% CI: 0.34-0.73, P=0.0004) and those with T1D (OR=0.39, 95% CI: 0.27-0.57, P<0.00001). Z+4 was also identified to be a protective factor, reducing the risk of DR in patients with T1D (OR=0.74, 95% CI: 0.57-0.96, P=0.02). Z-4 was revealed to be a risk factor for DR in Asian populations (OR=1.57, 95% CI: 1.22-2.03, P=0.0005) and in individuals with T1D (OR=1.62, 95% CI: 1.27-2.08, P=0.0001). However, no association was detected between the Z, Z+6 and Z-6 alleles and the risk of DR (P>0.05). In conclusion, the present results revealed the following: Z+2 may serve as a protective factor for DR in Caucasian individuals and those with T1D; Z+4 may be a protective factor for DR in patients with T2D; Z-2 may represent a risk factor for DR in all subgroups analyzed; and Z-4 may be a risk factor for DR in Asian populations and patients with T2D.

Abstract
The number of precaudal vertebrae in all extant crocodylians is remarkably conservative, with nine cervicals, 15 dorsals and two sacrals, a pattern present also in their closest extinct relatives. The consistent vertebral count indicates a tight control of axial patterning by Hox genes during development. Here we report on a deviation from this pattern based on an associated skeleton of the giant caimanine Purussaurus, a member of crown Crocodylia, and several other specimens from the Neogene of the northern neotropics. P. mirandai is the first crown-crocodylian to have three sacrals, two true sacral vertebrae and one non-pathological and functional dorsosacral, to articulate with the ilium (pelvis). The giant body size of this caiman relates to locomotory and postural changes. The iliosacral configuration, a more vertically oriented pectoral girdle, and low torsion of the femoral head relative to the condyles are hypothesized specializations for more upright limb orientation or weight support.

Abstract
Similar to other peripheral artery diseases, vessel narrowing in popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) reduces the ankle brachial index (ABI). Since the PAES is related to several anatomical or functional variations, we sought to determine if the ABI was correlated with the type of syndrome. Through a systematic review of literature, we identified case reports and series in which the diagnosis of PAES was accompanied by ABI measurement. Twenty-seven studies included in the qualitative synthesis described 87 limbs. The most common types of the syndrome were those caused by an abnormal medial head of the gastrocnemius (type II, n = 35, 40.23%) and aberrant course of the popliteal artery (type I, n = 20, 22.99%). The variation of plantaris muscle (n = 7, 8.05%) is currently not included in the classification system. The median value of ABI was 0.87 (interquartile range (IQR) = 0.6–1.0). There were no differences among types of syndrome (F = 0.13, p = 0.72). In conclusion, despite clinical recommendations, the ABI remains underused in PAES diagnosis. No correlation was detected between the index score and type of syndrome. The cases of PAES involving structures other than the gastrocnemius or popliteus muscle suggest the need to revisit the current clinical classification system.

Abstract
Excessive cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice poses a potential threat to human health. Rice varieties vary in their Cd content, which depends mainly on root-to-shoot translocation of Cd. However, cultivars accumulating high Cd in the natural population have not been completely investigated. In this study, we analyzed the variation in Cd accumulation in a diverse panel of 529 rice cultivars. Only a small proportion (11 of 529) showed extremely high root-to-shoot Cd transfer rates, and in seven of these cultivars this was caused by two known OsHMA3 alleles. Using quantitative trait loci mapping, we identified a new OsHMA3 allele that was associated with high Cd accumulation in three of the remaining cultivars. Using heterologous expression in yeast and comparative analysis among different rice cultivars, we observed that this new allele was weak at both the transcriptional and protein levels compared with the functional OsHMA3 genotypes. The weak Cd transport activity was further demonstrated to be caused by a Gly to Arg substitution at position 512. Our study comprehensively analyzed the variation in root-to-shoot Cd translocation rates in cultivated rice and identified a new OsHMA3 allele that caused high Cd accumulation in a few rice cultivars.

Abstract
Anatomage (Anatomage, Inc., San Jose, CA) is a modern method for studying anatomy. It is a state-of-the-art method used for the representation of the structure of the human body. In our study, we examined the seventh cranial nerve of a male Caucasian cadaver using an Anatomage Table in the Anatomy Department of the School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University, Athens, Greece. After exiting the skull from the stylomastoid foramen, the facial nerve divided into the temporofacial and cervicofacial main branches. The cervicofacial branch divided into its own branches, including the marginal mandibular nerve (MMN), which ran within the investing (superficial) layer of the deep cervical fascia. We found a variation of the course of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. In the area of the lower border of the mandible, where the MMN actually crossed the facial artery and vein, it appeared to run deeper than both of those vessels, rather than running superficially. This seemed to be a rare variation of the location of the MMN relative to the facial vessels, which suggested that extra care is essential in surgical approaches within this area.

Abstract
Mitochondria are the main producers of energy in eukaryotic cells. Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with specific mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variations (haplogroups), and these variations can contribute to human disease. East Asian populations show enrichment of many mitochondrial haplogroups, including A, B, D, G, M7, M8, M9, N9, R9, and exhibit half of the known haplogroups of worldwide. In this review, we summarize the current research in the field of mtDNA variation and associated disease in East Asian populations and discuss the physiological and pathological relevance of mitochondrial biology. mtDNA haplogroups are associated with various metabolic disorders ascribed to altered oxidative phosphorylation. The same mitochondrial haplogroup can show either a negative or positive association with different diseases. Mitochondrial dynamics, mitophagy, and mitochondrial oxidative stress, ultimately influence susceptibility to various diseases. In addition, mitochondrial retrograde signaling pathways may have profound effects on nuclear-mitochondrial interactions, affecting cellular morphology, and function. Other complex networks including proteostasis, mitochondrial unfolded protein response and reactive oxygen species signaling may also play pivotal roles in metabolic performance.
