Abstract
Aryl sulfatases A and B and acid phosphatase activities were studied in the nervous system of rats aged 5, 10, 15, 20 and greater than 45 days. The enzyme reaction products appeared as granules localized in neurons of the cerebral cortex, brain stem, choroid plexus and ependyma and in blood vessels. The distribution and intensity of enzyme reaction product varied with the age of the animals. Aryl sulfatase B activity appeared earlier and reached a maximum of intensity sooner than the other enzymes. Acid phosphatase and aryl sulfatase A activities appeared at the same time. However, acid phosphatase had a greater intensity of activity than aryl sulfatase A. The increased activity of aryl sulfatase B was parallel with the maturation of neurons. It is suggested that aryl sulfatase B may be an essential enzyme for myelination.

Abstract
The localization of aryl sulfatase activity in thyroid follicle cells was studied with cytochemical techniques both on the light and the electron microscopic level. Twenty male rats received thyroxine to suppress the thyroid activity. To 10 of these animals, thyrotropic hormone (TSH) was given 15-140 min before sacrifice. In both experimental groups, there was dense precipitation indicating aryl sulfatase activity in the cytosomes. In the TSH-stimulated group colloid droplets were observed. These did not show aryl sulfatase activity, not even after prolonged incubation. The number of enzyme-containing bodies in the cytoplasm seemed to decrease after TSH-stimulation, probably because of fusion of colloid droplets with preexisting cytosomes. The lack of enzyme activity in colloid droplets is discussed and some possible explanations are offered.

Abstract
Type II alveolar epithelial cells show high levels of acid phosphatase, aryl sulfatase B and β-glucuronidase activities. In formalin- and glutaraldehyde-fixed rabbit lung acid phosphatase and aryl sulfatase B activities were demonstrated in the cytoplasmic inclusion bodies, supporting their identification as lysosomes. Type II cells differ from alveolar macrophages in their levels of hydrolase activity and the fine structure of their active sites.
