[99mTc-MAA brain scan and CT in the diagnosis of intracranial diseases (author's transl)]

Brain scan with 99mTc-labelled macroaggregated albumin (MAA brain scan) and computed tomography studies (CT) were performed on 78 patients with intracranial diseases. 99mTc-MAA was injected into right and left carotid artery respectively, at the different time. And then diagnostic evaluation of both techniques were investigated. The MAA brain scan was useful for the detection of ischemic lesion in the early stage after onset of cerebral infarction. It was shown in 29.5% that partial field of anterior cerebral artery was injected through the contralateral artery. In these cases, the MAA brain scan was also useful. In the cases of hemorrhagic lesions, however, the CT was more useful than MAA brain scan. Therefore, the both techniques helped each other in the diagnosis of intracranial diseases.

Purification and Some Properties of Cell Wall-bound Invertases from Sugar Beet Seedlings and Aged Slices of Mature Roots

Cell wall-bound invertases (EC 3.2.1.26) from both sugar beet seedlings and aged slices of mature roots were purified to homogeneity separately with CM-cellulose chromatography and Bio-Gel P-150 gel filtrations. The enzymes behaved similarly throughout the purification procedures. The purified enzymes are identical as characterized by specific activity, gel electrophoretic mobility, K(m) for sucrose and raffinose (1.33 and 4.0 millimolar, respectively), mobility on Bio-Gel P-150 (molecular weight 28,000), optimum pH (4.6 to 5.0), optimum temperature, and dependence on NaCl concentration for insolubilization by DNA. The results suggest that the enzymes may be encoded for by the same structural gene.

[Early detection of gastric carcinoma in the mass survey of the stomach in a selected area in Japan (author's transl)]

Photofluorographic gastric examinations have been done on a total of 6931 persons in Chokai Village, Akita. On an average 25% of all examinees were advised for precise examination using UGIS and endoscopy. Early gastric carcinoma was found in 12 cases among them, with a detection rate of 0,29%.

The blood samples from the cephalic vein and the external jugular vein were compared hematologically and serum biochemically in 22 beagle dogs. No significant differences (p < 0.05) between these two venous blood were observed in most of the items determined except MCV (mean corpuscular volume) and serum glucose level. The time required to collect 12 ml of blood was less than 30 seconds from the external jugular vein while two to eight minutes from the cephalic vein. From the result of this study the external jugular vein is shown more suitable region for collecting much volume of blood samples than the cephalic vein in dogs.

The age-related tumor incidence in Wistar-Imamichi rat

The age-related incidences and types of spontaneous tumors were studied in 320 male and 354 female Wistar-Imamichi rats reared up to 130 weeks of age. The tumor incidence increased abruptly between 53 and 78 weeks of age, and 170 males and 269 females were shown to bear tumors during the observation period. Multiple tumors occurred in 62 males and 115 females. Most common were hypophyseal (male 69: female 224), mammary gland (29:99), testicular (74:0) and adrenal gland (26:21) tumors. The incidences of hypophyseal and testicular tumors increased with age. Tumors occurred in later stages of the observation period in the ovary, uterus and vagina (0:27), thyroid and parathyroid (13:12), skin (8:8), spleen and lymph nodes (8:7), pancreas (9:5), liver (3:7), lung (3:3), thymus (1:4), omentum and mesenterium (2:3), stomach and intestine (2:2), kidney and urinary bladder (1:2), right femur (0:1), and brain (0:1).

A case of double pylorus

Doubling of the pyloric channel is one of the rare anomalies of the intestinal tract. There have been 23 cases of double pylorus that we have been able to find in the literature. As the etiologic aspects of double pylorus the majorities of the cases were thought to be acquired lesions from ulcer disease except three cases. We present a case of double pylorus which seems to be acquired lesion, with a review of the literature.

Trophic effect of tetragastrin on the stomach, duodenum and pancreas in rats

Subcutaneous injections of a large dose of tetragastrin (2 mg/day) into a rat for 4 weeks caused hypertrophy of parietal cells of the stomach, intestinal glandular cells of the duodenum, and pancreatic acinar cells. Ths histometrical analysis revealed that these trophic effects of tetragastrin were produced in varying degrees in different sites.

The origins of unconjugated bilirubin in bile

In order to investigate the origin of unconjugated bilirubin in bile, beta-glucuronidase activity in rat and human bile was determined at various pH. beta-Glucuronidase in rat and human bile had their optimum pH at 5.5 when phenolphthalein glucuronide and delta 1-azopigment were used as substrate, and at 6.0 when bile itself was incubated. In human and rat bile the hydrolysis was suppressed to a minimum at each physiologic pH. However, human bile shows remarkable hydrolysis in alkaline pH (7.5--8.0). On the other hand, when delta 1-azopigment was incubated in various buffers, several per cent of delta 1-azopigment were hydrolyzed non-enzymatically in neutral to alkaline pH. Thus, it was suggested that enzymatic and nonenzymatic hydrolysis contributes to the existence of unconjugated bilirubin in bile.

Restriction map, partial cloning and localization of 9S and 12S kinetoplast RNA genes on the maxicircle component of the kinetoplast DNA of Leishmania tarentolae

We have constructed a restriction map of the maxicircle component of the kinetoplast DNA of Leishmania tarentolae for the enzymes EcoRI, Bam HI, HaeIII, HpaII, SalI, BglII and HindIII. The 9 and 12S kinetoplast RNAs were localized on this map. Two fragments of this maxicircle molecule were cloned in the bacterial plasmid, pBR322, including a 4.4 . 10(6) dalton EcoRI/BamHI fragment which contains the 9 and 12S RNA genes.

Integrator for use in bombardment experiments

A convenient integrator was developed for use in bombardment experiments with a charged particle accelerator such as a linac. In this device an irradiation dose is digitally displayed in the number of electrons per cm(2). Furthermore, a linac is controlled to deliver a preset dose by this integrator.

Antitumor agents. II. Effect of 5-fluorouracil and cyclophosphamide on immunological parameters and liver microsomes of tumor-bearing rats

An attempt has been made to clarify immunosuppressive properties of anti-tumor agents by studying the effect of the agents on the thymus, the reticulo-endothelial system (RES) and hepatic drug-metabolizing enzyme activities of tumor (an ascites hepatoma, AH 130 cells)-bearing rats. A drastic decrease in the thymus weight and the total number of the lymphocytes and an enhanced activity of thymus alkaline phosphatase were detected by injecting either 5-fluorouracil (5FU) or cyclophosphamide (CP) (30 mg each/kg weight, i.p.) daily for 5 days to tumor-bearing rats. The agents, however, did not induce any conspicuous damage in microsomal mixed function oxidase system or the RES. The presence of 10-day-old tumor resulted in an extreme decrease in the weight and lymphocytes of thymus and a partial decrease in the microsomal drug metabolizing enzyme activities and the RES. Thus, these antitumor agents may lead to the decline of host-mediated immune mechanism. The multiplication of the tumor cells also appears to depress the immune functions and the host resistance.

Spontaneous lesions detected in the beagles used in toxicity studies

Four hundred and twenty beagles 1 to 4 years of age were examined for spontaneous pathological changes. In the liver were seen fine granular gallstones (87.5%), granulomas (59.9%), intranuclear hyaline inclusions (52.6%), lipofuscin deposition (50%) and eosinophilic inclusions (3.7%) in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes and parenchymal necrosis at the base of the ligaments (7.3%). Intranuclear hyaline inclusions and lipofuscin deposition were more frequently seen in dogs after being subjected to tests for more than 13 weeks. Besides, hyperplasia of follicular epithelial cells of the thyroid gland (46.3%), Gandy-Gamna like bodies of the splenic capsule (43.1%), small cysts in the anterior lobe of the hypophysis (35.1%) and prostatitis (13,7%) were observed. Lesions due to migration of Toxocara canis larvae were detected in the liver, kidney, lung and other organs from 33.1% of cases examined.

Comparative studies on the gastric glycopeptide in eleven animal species

1. Glycopeptides in the stomachs of eleven mammalian species, including human, rabbit, horse, cow, pig, goat, sheep, dog, cat, guinea pig and rat were assayed by determining the carbohydrate content of materials which remained after proteolysis. 2. The glycopeptide content was higher in the mucosa than in the muscular layer including serosa, especially in the porcine stomach and the fourth stomachs of the ruminants than in the stomachs of any other animals. 3. The glycopeptide, which was stained with both alcian blue and PAS, was absent or sparingly present in the mucosae of the human, rabbit, horse stomachs and in the mucosae of the first to third stomachs of the cow, goat and sheep, whereas in the mucosae of the pig, dog, cat, guinea pig and rat stomachs and in the mucosae of the fourth stomachs of the cow, goat and sheep, it was found in noticeable extents.
