Abstract
The Valvular structure developing at the site from which an artery was given off was examined. The valvular structure consisted mainly of smooth muscle cells, and was found at the openings of such small arteries as the intercostal and lumbar arteries. It was a crescent membrane-like structure extending from the peripheral edge of the opening to the downstream edge. This structure was indistinct in newborn infants, became gradually distinct in infants and stood out in teen-agers. It became rather thick and rounded in human beings more than 20 years of age. With further advance in age, the smooth muscle cells became degenerated and hyalinized with some disappearing eventually. In the valvular structure smooth muscle cells running longitudinally in the same direction as the blood stream were arranged in such a manner as a Venetion blind. This arrangement seemed to suggest that the valvular structure might have some function to adjust the blood stream at the branching portion of the aorta.

Abstract
Carbimazole (CBZ) is one of the major drugs currently used for the treatment of Graves' disease. It is a carbethoxy derivative of methimazole (MMI), originally developed in the hope of obtaining a longer acting drug than methimazole. In the present study we have demonstrated that carbimazole is rapidly converted to methimazole in vitro by serum from rats and humans, and we have obtained evidence that this conversion is enzymatic. Experiments with [35S] CBZ in rats showed that the drug is so rapidly transformed to MMI after i.v. injection (within 3 min) that very little of the unchanged drug would be expected to reach the thyroid gland. The antithyroid action of CBZ in rats, therefore, can be ascribed entirely to the MMI to which it is rapidly converted. Although no experiments were performed with human subjects in vivo, the very rapid conversion of CBZ to MMI by human serum in vitro suggests that the antithyroid action of CBZ in humans can also be attributed to MMI. The original expectation of a longer acting drug has, therefore, not been met by CBZ. On the basis of the studies reported here there appears to be no advantage in using CBZ in preference to MMI for the treatment of Graves' disease. Although the in vivo action of CBZ must be attributed to its rapid conversion to MMI, the drug does possess inherent antithyroid activity. This was shown in the present study by the finding that CBZ is as potent as MMI in blocking thyroid peroxidase-catalysed iodination of thyroglobulin.

Abstract
Secretory activity in the glands of the nasal polyps from 15 patients with or without allergic histories was examined by using a direct (anti-IgA) or indirect (anti-SC) immunofluorescent technique. Glands were found in all the examined nasal polyps, but in many, only a few were present. Active secretory process of IgA was observed in the intraepithelial glands of the ciliated, pseudostratified epithelium. Most of the dilated glandular ductules, on the contrary, appeared to be lacking in secretory activity of IgA. Such were commonly filled with mucus materials and their epithelial glandular cells showed no fluorescence for anti-SC, whereas the active IgA secreting cells showed a heavy fluorescence for secretory component (SC) in indirect immunofluorescent studies. Activity of the glandular ductules, therefore, was determined by examining the SC producing activity. In some extracted polyps, SC containing dilated glands were present. These active glands, however, lost the SC producing activity followed by the stasis of mucus flow in the lumen. Thus, when the glands were occupied by mucus materials, stretched and cystic degeneration ensued.

Abstract
Bile acids in the rat bile were fractionated into unconjugated, glycine- and taurine-conjugated fractions by employing piperidino-hydroxypropyl Sephadex LH-20 ion-exchange chromatography. Subsequently, these fractions were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) and GLC-mass spectrometry using a Silicone AN-600 column. Not only lithocholic acid, deoxycholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, hyodeoxycholic acid, ursodeoxycholic acid and cholic acid, but also alpha- and beta-muricholic acids were quantitatively and simultaneously detectable in conjugated and unconjugated fractions, respectively. In the unconjugated and conjugated fractions, varying amounts of the unidentified bile acid were detected upon GLC. The electron impact and ammonia chemical ionization mass spectrometric results and catalytic hydrogenation on the compound indicate that this bile acid seems to be a derivative of beta-muricholic acid having a double bond in the side chain. The present method is suitable to the simultaneous and quantitative determination of unconjugated and glycine- and taurine-conjugated bile acids in the rat bile.

Abstract
A sibship of thirteen subjects whose parents were first cousins was studied for a defect in thyroid hormone synthesis. Five sibs were goitrous and had congenital hypothyroidism. All but one showed a positive perchlorate discharge test (PDT). Three other subjects were goitrous and euthyroid (one with a positive PDT), and the remaining five sibs were euthyroid with a presumably normal thyroid. However, an abnormally exaggerated TSH response to TRH was observed not only in the hypothyroid patients but also in six of the other subjects, indicating a decreased thyroid feedback at the pituitary level in the presence of a normal serum concentration of thyroid hormones. In two hypothyroid patients a normal serum T3, low serum T4 and a low reverse T3 were observed. Microscopic studies of thyroid tissue from three of the sibs disclosed marked cellular hyperplasia with no lymphocytic infiltration anywhere in the tissue. Peroxidase activity was determined on tissue from three sibs by three different assay procedures. It was within the normal range in one patient and was significantly elevated in the other two. There was no evidence for a qualitatively defective peroxidase. The defect in thyroid function in this family does not appear to involve a peroxidase deficiency. Thyroglobulin isolated from the thyroid glands of two of the goitrous, hypothyroid subjects was poorly iodinated but was judged to be normal by immunoreactive and ultracentrifugation procedures. Although the nature of the thyroid metabolic defect in this family was not elucidated, the evidence suggests a genetic defect, probably involving a recessive gene.

Abstract
Experiments were performed with rats to test the physiological significance of a previously proposed mechanism of action of thioureylene antithyroid drugs, which had been derived from results obtained with a model system containing purified thyroid peroxidase. Two features of the previously proposed scheme were tested:1) the effects of drug dosage and 2) the effects of iodine deficiency. In the dosage experiments, rats were injected with graded doses of [35S]PTU (0.18-59 mumol or [35S]mmi (0.16-18 mumol). Thyroid glands were removed 1 and 6--8 h later and 35S distribution in the homogenates was determined by paper chromatography. Serum samples were also analyzed by the same procedure. From the measured 35S activity in the various components and from the known specific activity of the injected drugs, it was possible to calculate thyroidal concentrations of unchanged drug and drug metabolites. At low doses, thyroidal concentrations of unchanged 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) and 1-methyl-2-mercaptoimidazole (MM) significantly exceeded their concentrations in serum, as reported by previous investigators. A major new finding in the present investigation was the observation that intrathyroidal metabolism of PTU and MMI is greatly affected by dosage. Marked inhibition of intrathyroidal drug metabolism was observed at 6-8 when the dosage was increased from 5.9 to 18 mumol for [35S]PTU and from 0.88 to 2.2 mumol for [35S]MMI (per 200 g rat). These findings demonstrate that with increasing dosage, PTU and MMI inhibit their own intrathyroidal metabolism. These dosage effects are similar to results previously reported for in vitro oxidation of PTU and MMI by the thyroid peroxidase system, and they offer support for the physiological significance of the previously proposed scheme. Further evidence for the physiological validity of this scheme was obtained in the experiments with iodine-deficient rats. As predicted from the in vitro findings, intrathyroidal metabolism of [35S]PTU and [35S]MMI was markedly reduced in rats on low iodine diet.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
The thyroid of Hashimoto's disease is unique in its susceptibility to exogenous iodide and the positive perchlorate test. It would be of interest to know if there is any alteration of iodine metabolism in the thyroid.
The results obtained in 9 cases with untreated Hashimoto's disease were compared with those in 9 normal thyroids; 5 cases were investigated for iodine metabolism and 4 cases for the peroxidase study.
The thyroglobulin content in thyroid wet weight showed lower values 1.6 ± 1.2 % compared to 8.0 ± 1.5 % in normal. Thyroglobulin represented 18.9 ± 9.3 % of total soluble protein and was significantly lower than normal, 66.9 ± 5.4 %. Iodine content of thyroglobulin was extremely low, 0.10 ± 0.05 % compared to 0.49 ± 0.03% in normal. The thyroglobulin with low degree of iodination showed a low sedimentation coefficient of 18.1 ± 0.1. Distribution of iodo-amino acid-iodine was 8.1 ± 2.8% for thyroxine (T4) and 14.4 ± 9.7 % for triiodothyronine (T3), resulting in a much higher T3/T4 ratio than in normal thyroids. Monoiodotyrosine/diiodotyrosine (MIT/DIT) ratio was higher and T4/DIT ratio was apparently lower than normal. These results resemble the pattern of that found in iodine deficiency. T3/T4 ratio was increased in the blood of patients with Hashimoto's disease. Consequently the alteration of distribution of iodo-amino acids in the thyroid may contribute to the increase in T3/T4 ratio in the blood of this disease.
Peroxidase activity showed 103 ± 51 U/mg particulate protein and was significantly lower than values in normal thyroids, 299 ± 85 U/mg protein.
On the other hand, the total amount of thyroglobulin was not significantly decreased in this disease. The total amount of organified iodine, however, was apparently lower than normal.
These results suggest that the low degree of iodination of thyroglobulin is an essential alteration in the thyroid of Hashimoto's disease.

Abstract
In 31 patients with an initial diagnosis of cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was detected after a clinical follow-up of 8 months to 14 years with an average of 59 months. They had had no scintigraphic and biochemical abnormalities suggestive of HCC at the beginning. The follow-up period before the detection of carcinoma was shorter in patients positive for hepatitis B surface antigen compared with those negative for hepatitis B surface antigen. Analyses of clinical data during the follow-up and liver scans made shortly before tumor detection suggested that in most of these patients HCC became discernible relatively early in the course of cirrhosis or long before cirrhosis reached an advanced stage. A sharp rise in serum alpha-fetoprotein level proved highly diagnostic in 11, it remained low throughout in 7, and tumor was already unresectable in the majority. Although continuous and regular check for alpha-fetoprotein is imperative in patients with chronic liver disease, particularly in those with hepatitis B surface antigenemia, additional diagnostic tools are necessary for the detection of small HCC in its resectable stage.

Abstract
We have developed sensitive and reliable radioimmunoassays for T4 and T3 in amphibian plasma and have used these procedures to measure plasma T4 and T3 levels in spontaneously developing Rana catesbeiana tadpoles at various stages of metamorphosis. During premetamorphosis circulating levels of both T4 and T3 were below the limits of detection of the RIA procedures (T4 less than 50 ng/100 ml, T3 less than 5 ng/100 ml). A gradual rise in plasma T3 and T4 became apparent during prometamorphosis, and at the onset of metamorphic climax the levels of both T4 and T3 increased sharply. Peak levels for both hormones were observed in the middle of metamorphic climax (stage XXIII). The circulating T3 level reached a mean peak of 78 ng/100 mg, at least 15 times greater than the level during premetamorphosis. The peak T4 level was 0.5 microgram/100 ml, about a 10-fold increase over the premetamorphosis level. The surge in thyroid hormone secretion lasted only for several days, and during the latter half of metamorphic climax there was a fairly rapid decrease in plasma T4 and T3. By 2 days post-climax the levels had declined to about 20% of their peak values. Free T4 and T3 levels in plasma followed the same general pattern as the total hormone levels during the various stages of tadpole development. In adult R. catesbeiana, plasma T4 and T3 levels were surprisingly low. Similarly low values were observed in Bufo marinus and in Rana pipiens. The very low levels of circulating T4 and T3 both in premetamorphosis tadpoles and in adults suggest that thyroid hormones in anuran Amphibia may be of importance only during the period of metamorphosis.

Abstract
We have developed assays for thyroid peroxidase in crude thyroid tissue preparations, in which a linear relationship between activity and amount of tissue could be demonstrated. Linear assays were developed based on the following peroxidase catalyzed reactions in the presence of H2O2:(1) oxidation of I- to I(-3), (2) oxidation of guaiacol, and (3) iodination of human goiter thyroglobulin. To attain satisfactory linearity we found it necessary to solubilize the enzyme beforehand. This was accomplished by a brief treatment of the particulate fraction with trypsin and deoxycholate, followed by centrifugation at 40 000 X g and dialysis. Not only did this treatment facilitate the development of linear assays, but it also resulted in a substantial increase in enzyme activity compared with that in the untreated particulate fraction. The use of a Polytron homogenizer for the initial disruption of the tissue also proved helpful in developing these assay procedures. The three different assays were used to measure peroxidase activities in human thyroid adenomas and in normal tissue derived from adenomatous glands. T he adenomas generally displayed a higher level of peroxidase activity than normal tissue. The greatest difference was observed with the iodination assay and the smallest difference with the guaiacol assay.

Abstract
As a tool with which to detect iodinated compounds in human thyroid specimens, we have reevaluated a nonincineration technique which has so far been employed in the determination of thyroxine-iodine in peripheral blood. The catalytic action of iodoamino acids in the Ce-As reaction was enhanced by a small amount of Cl2. On the contrary, a large amount of Cl2 inhibited the reaction unexpectedly. Among iodide, iodotyrosine and iodothyronine, iodide was the most effective catalyst in the Ce-As reaction and iodothyronine was the least effective one. Protein seemed to inhibit this reaction of thyroglobulin. But the result of iodine content in thyroglobulin by this technique agreed well with that by incineration when measured 127I was corrected by percent activity of dializable part of the total activity of 131I-thyroglobulin with the same protein concentration, after the NaClO treatment. The results of human thyroid specimens were as follows: the thyroglobulin content of five normal subjects was 8.0 +/- 1.5% of wet thyroid weight. That of Hashimoto's disease was significantly decreased which seemed compatible with the decrease in iodine content of thyroglobulin, whereas thyroglobulin content of Graves disease treated with 1-methyl, 2-mercaptoimidazole followed by a large dose of iodide was well preserved in spite of a lower degree of iodination of thyroglobulin. As for the distribution of iodoamino acids-iodine in normal thyroid, T4 was 20.5 +/- 0.7%. This technique ultimately looks promising as a tool with which to study intrathyroidal iodine metabolism in human.

Abstract
The clinicopathologic features of 26 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surrounded by a grossly distinct capsule-like fibrous tissue were studied. The frequency of this type was 10.3% among autopsy cases of HCC. The mean age of the patients was 64.1 years, which was significantly older compared with that of 143 cases of nonencapsulated HCC. Hepatitis-B surface antigen in serum was positive in 18.7% of the cases studied, the positivity rate being lower than that of HCC in general. Histologically, the tumor was relatively well differentiated and the capsule was the product of slow expanding growth. Intravenous tumor invasion was less frequent compared with other types of HCC. Clinically, celiac angiography proves to be a most useful diagnostic method; a thick capsule may be demonstrated as a thin radiolucent rim around the mass. The clinical course from the early stage is protracted and, if detected early, this type of HCC may be removed surgically.

Three types of small cardiac lesions were described and illustrated: (1) focal type of papillary muscle fibrosis, evidently a healed infarct of the papillary muscle present in 13% of autopsies, is a histologically characteristic lesion associated with coronary artery disease and healed myocardial infarction, (2) diffuse type of papillary muscle fibrosis, probably an aging change present in almost half of the autopsies, is associated with sclerosis of the arteries in the papillary muscle, is identifiable histologically, and apparently is not associated with any cardiac abnormality, and (3) focal cardiac myocytolysis, a unique histologic lesion, usually multifocal without predilection for any area of the heart, is associated with ischemic heard disease, death due to cancer complicated by nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis and microthrombi in small cardiac arteries as well as with other diseases. Differentiation of the 2 types of papillary muscle fibrosis is important in the study of papillary muscle and mitral valve dysfunction. Focal cardiac myocytolysis may contribute to the fatal extension of myocardial infarcts.

Abstract
Graft-type copolymers composed of hydrophilic poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) as a backbone and a small amount of hydrophobic poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) as a long branch exhibit excellent thromboresistance. The interrelationship between the thromboresistance and microstructure of the graft-type copolymers as well as the water structure in the hydrated polymers has been investigated. It was concluded that both the structure of hydrophobic domain dispersed in the hydrophilic matrix and the water bound to the polymer may be responsible for the excellent thromboresistance of the graft-type copolymers.

Abstract
Sixteen necropsies and 4 cases of hepatic resection in which the liver had a solitary hepatocellular carcinoma smaller than 4.5 cm, or a few tumor nodules smaller than 3.5 cm, have been analyzed. Clinically, these patients presented with signs and symptoms compatible with cirrhosis and, of the 16 autopsy cases only 2 had been diagnosed correctly. In all but 4 cases, the noncancerous parenchyma showed advanced cirrhosis of the mixed type, with irregularly sized multilobular nodules and thin strands of stroma, different from typical alcoholic cirrhosis. The primary lesion was grossly encapsulated in the majority, suggesting a slow, expanding growth. Histologically, most primaries were relatively well differentiated. Serum alpha-fetoprotein was generally low, and it served as the major diagnostic clue in only 5 cases. In patients with mildly abnormal alpha-fetoprotein levels, continuous monitoring seems important in order to detect a steady rise, the first warning for tumor growth.

Abstract
Serum enzyme activities were studied in 131 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 76 cases of metastatic liver carcinomas (MLC) and 234 cases of hepatic cirrhosis. SGOT was elevated above SGPT in most of the time in these patients, SGOT/SGPT was greater in HCC compared with other groups, and that this ratio increased during the preterminal period more markedly in patients with HCC because of the significant increase of SGOT in the face of relatively stable SGPT. Preterminal rises of alkaline phosphatase and LDH activities were more pronounced in MLC. Leucine aminopeptidase activity exhibited no characteristic feature of diagnostic value. Of the five enzymes, SGOT changes were more closely correlated with the growth of HCC; SGPT reflected more of the liver parenchymal damage while SGOT was probably accounted for in part by tumor-derived GOT. Other clinical and pathological implications are discussed.

Abstract
The structures of AM-toxins I, II and III, host specific phytotoxic metabolites of Alternaria mali, can be readily deduced from low and high resolution mass spectral data, since the amino acids and their sequences are demonstrated by this technique. Additionally, the general fragmentation of these compounds by electron impact is discussed by comparing the spectra of analogous synthetic compounds.

Abstract
Two cases of minute hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) found in a liver infested with Clonorchis sinensis are described. One had mild infestation with hepatic changes suggestive of posthepatitic cirrhosis, and the other heavy infestation exhibiting secondary biliary cirrhosis with dilated intrahepatic bile ducts and periductal fibrosis. None had evidence of hepatitis B infection. The tumor nodule was solitary, measuring 5 X 7 mm and 10 X 11 mm, respectively, and the cells were differentiated to be classified as Grade I of Edmondson-Steiner's scale of anaplasia. It is not clear whether or not clonorchiasis was etiologically related to HCC, but it was of interest that in both cases the tumor nodule was very small representing the primary lesion without metastasis.

Abstract
A case of a 20 years old female who had Noonan syndrome associated with obstructive cardiomyopathy was presented. It is well known that Noonan syndrome is frequently complicated with cardiac anomaly, and although no autopsies were performed two cases have been diagnosed clinically as Noonan syndrome accompanied with idiopathic cardiomyopathy in our country. The present case would be the first autopsied case in Japan of Noonan syndrome associated with idiopathic obstructive cardiomyopathy.

Abstract
Hepatic angiograms of 114 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were studied, particularly changes in the portal vein branches. Arterio-portal shunts of varying sizes, evidenced by opacification of intrahepatic portal branches, were seen in 72 cases (63.2%), with retrograde opacification of the portal vein trunk in 29 (25.4%). At least four types of shunts were found: (a) through a tumor thrombus in the portal branch, (b) in a retrograde direction via a peripheral tumor nodule, (c) through a small tumor invading or amputating an artery, and (d) through a tumor located near a major portal vein branch and supplied by a large, coiling artery. Postmortem angiography of the liver in 50 patients with HCC suggests that arterio-portal shunts are the result of the special vasculature in HCC and are highly diagnostic when accompanied by other angiographic changes.

Abstract
We analyzed the effect of asparagine starvation and L-asparaginase on RNA metabolism of mouse leukemia cell lines L5178Y, whose growth is dependent on the presence of asparagine, and L5178Y-R, whose growth is independent of the presence of asparagine. The deprivation of asparagine from the medium inhibited cellular protein synthesis by 30 to 40% of the control value in L5178Y cells, but not in L5178Y-R cells, whereas L-asparaginase inhibited synthesis by more than 80% in both L5178Y and L5178Y-R cells. The decrease in protein synthesis caused by asparagine starvation in L5178Y cells was accompanied by a decrease in ribosomal RNA synthesis. The synthesis of rRNA was also markedly blocked when L5178Y and L5178Y-R cells were exposed to L-asparaginase. The rate of synthesis of pulse-labeled RNA decreased significantly in the cells treated with L-asparaginase, and smaller pieces of polyadenylate containing pulse-labeled RNA (presumptive messenger RNA) appeared among monosomes and polysomes. However, the rate of messenger RNA synthesis was constant during asparagine starvation, and a marked accumulation of monosome was observed.

Abstract
The seizure development was investigated in seven septal kindled cats for examining a participation of septal area in psychomotor epilepsy. Daily electrical stimulation (mean: 33.5 days) of septal area could lead to the "kindled" generalized convulsion. Six stages of behavioral seizure development were distinguished: 1) attention reaction, 2) the above and immobility, 3) the above and autonomic manifestation, 4) the above and facial twitching, head nodding, 5) the above and tonic extension of contralateral forepaw, 6) the above and generalized clonic convulsions. Self-sustained after-discharge and independent interictal spike discharge appeared in the hippocampus in stage 2 or 3, in the amygdala and the globus pallidus in stage 3 or 4, and also in the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus in stage 5. Positive transference phenomenon was confirmed in bilateral hippocampus, amygdala and globus pallidus. These findings show the progressive dissemination of secondary epileptogeneses in these secondary brain structures during the septal seizure development. Electrographic and behavioral seizure development mentioned above were completely identical to those in the hippocampal seizure that we have reported previously. It is concluded that psychomotor epilepsies may not only be triggered by the hippocampal and amygdaloid foci but by the septum and its related structuresfoei.

Abstract
Autopsies were conducted on Japanese men from 45 to 71 years of age in Hiroshima, Japan (191 patients) and in Honolulu, Hawaii (298 patients). They were performed according to a common protocol. In both locations the patients studied were representative of decedents from population-based cohorts with respect to age and cause of death. The degree of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries and aorta, assessed according to the panel method, was found to be substantially more severe in men in Hawaii than in those in Japan. Areas of recent myocardial necrosis were 3.5 times more frequent in men in Honolulu than in those in Hiroshima. Large myocardial scars were 1.5 times more frequent in the men in Honolulu. It was characteristic of men in Honolulu that severe atherosclerosis and myocardial lesions appeared at younger ages than in those in Hiroshima. These data demonstrate that there is an increase in the frequency and severity of ischemic lesion in the myocardium of Japanese who have migrated to Hawaii and that this increase is the result of atherosclerosis of the extramural segments of the coronary arteries.

Abstract
Correlation between the kindled seizure susceptibility and brain monoamine levels was investigated in the hippocampal and amygdaloid kindled cats. Increase of interictal discharge (IID) frequency and morphological change of IID into self-sustained discharge appeared following reserpine administration. alpha-MPT also increased the IID frequency. These changes in reserpine- and alpha-MPT-treated cats were suppressed completely by the administration of L-DOPA, suggesting that depletion of norepinephrine and dopamine exacerbate the kindled seizure susceptibility. In a second experiment, the assay study of brain catecholamine showed significant and parallel depletion of both norepinephrine and dopamine in the hippocampal kindled cat brain. It is concluded that catecholamine may play an inhibitory role in the establishment and neurohumoral control of the kindled seizure susceptibility.

Abstract
Synergistic effects of sulfur-containing purines and related ribonucleosides (6-thioinosine, 6-thioguanine, 6-thiocyanatopurine, 6-methylthioinosine, 6-thiocyanatoguanine, 6-thiocyanatoguanosine, 6-phenacylthioinosine, 6-nitrobenzlythioinosine, 6-(p-chlorobenzyl)thioinosine, 6-(p-nitrobenzyl)thioguanosine, 6-benzylthioinosine, 6-ethylthioinosine, 6-benzylthioguanine, 6-benzylthiopurine, 6-methylthiopurine, and 6-thiocyanatoinosine) and chlorine-containing purine and its ribonucleoside, (6-chloropuine and 6-chloropurine riboside), in combination with the polyene antibiotic, Amphotericin-B, on cell survival and synthesis of DNA were examined in mouse leukemia L5178Y cells. 6-Methylthioinosine, 6-thiocyanatopurine, 6-thiocyanatoinsoine, 6-methylthiopurine, and 6-thiocyanatoguanine (or -guanosine) among sulfur-containing compounds were strongly potentiated by Amphotericin-B, and 6-chloropurine riboside, which is electronically analogous to methylthioinosine, was also enhanced by the polyene. Thiocyanoto or methylthio group at position 6 of the purine ring seems to be important for the polyene-mediated potentiation. 6-Methylthioinosine alone had much greater effect on DNA synthesis of HeLa cells than on L5178Y cells, and Amphotericin-B failed to potentiate the action of 6-methylthioinosine in HeLa cells.

Abstract
Seizure development and transference phenomenon were investigated in hippocampal and amygdaloid kindled cats. The behavioral and electrographic findings during the kindling procedures showed that motor seizure development in hippocampal seizures occurred with the emergence of independent discharging in the amygdala, globus pallidus and contralateral hippocampus. Furthermore, secondary site convulsions developed upon the first stimulation of these structures in the hippocampal group but only after over a month of hippocampal stimulation in the amygdaloid group. It was, therefore, concluded that role of the amygdala and globus pallidus in hippocampal seizure development was more essential than that of hippocampal stimulation in amygdaloid seiqure development. The common findings between the hippocampal and amygdaloid kindled animals were the systematic progression to seizures, the all-or-nothing nature of the electrical response and the relative permanency of the seizure susceptibility. Seizure susceptibility increased during slow wave sleep and decreased during REM sleep. These latter findings were examined with preliminary data of brain bioassays of catecholamines.

Abstract
The etiologic relationship of parasitic liver disease to primary liver cancer has long been debated. For this reason, a review of 4611 necropsies was carried out to determine the frequency with which hepatocellular carcinoma occurred in association with schistosomiasis. Of 227 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, 24 (10.6%) were associated with schistosomiasis japonica. This was significantly higher than the incidence of this carcinoma without schistosomiasis (2.78%). The majority of the 24 cases exhibited the features of a mixed macronodular and micronodular cirrhosis (Gall's posthepatitic cirrhosis); this was super-imposed upon and caused a masking of schistosomiasis fibrosis. By radioimmunoassay hepatitis B antigen was positive in 27% of these cases. A review of the literature indicated that chronic schistosomiasis, on its own, is unlikely to be the cause of primary liver cell carcinoma. Histologic features resembling post-hepatitic cirrhosis combined with a high frequency of hepatitis B antigen suggest that viral hepatitis rather than S. japonicum is the more likely etiologic factor involved, or has a synergistic effect on carcinogenesis.

Abstract
A generalized calcification of the liver was seen in a plain abdominal radiograph of an old male with schistosomiasis japonica and a myeloma. Autopsy disclosed advanced fibrosis of the liver, and histologically, numerous calcified ova with calcification of the surrounding tissue were seen in the thick fibrous bands. Calcification of schistosoma ova so intense as to exhibit a generalized hepatic calcification has never been described in the literature. It is not clear whether the number of ova and the period of their presence are the only factors that determine the degree of liver calcification.

Abstract
The trishomocyclopropenyl cation has been prepared for the first time and is shown to be a remarkably stable, highly charge-delocalized species. The large [Formula: see text] value associated with the carbons formally carrying the positive charge, the high-field chemical shift of these carbons, and the absence of hydride shift, all are significant and are consistent with the formulation of 1 subject to the limit of the n.m.r. time scale.
