Abstract
A magnet system for a 28 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source is being developed by the Korea Basic Science Institute. The configuration of the magnet system consists of 3 solenoid coils for a mirror magnetic field and 6 racetrack coils for a hexapole magnetic field. They can generate axial magnetic fields of 3.6 T at the beam injection part and 2.2 T at the extraction part. A radial magnetic field of 2.1 T is achievable at the plasma chamber wall. A step type winding process was employed in fabricating the hexapole coil. The winding technique was confirmed through repeated cooling tests. Superconducting magnets and a cryostat system are currently being manufactured.

Abstract
Constructed wetlands (CWs) are well recognized as having low construction and maintenance cost and low energy requirement. However, CW design has been mainly based on rule-of-thumb approaches. In this study, the efficiency of a modular horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) CW using four different design schemes was investigated. Based on the results, the four systems have attained more than 90% removal of total suspended solids and more than 50% removal efficiency for total phosphorus, PO(4)-P and Zn. The planted system achieved higher pollutant removal rates than the unplanted system. In terms of media, bottom ash was more effective than woodchip in reducing the pollutants. Considering the flow length, optimum removal efficiency was achieved after passing the sedimentation tank and vertical media layer; with respect to depth, more pollutants were removed in the upper sand layer than in the lower gravel layer. This study recommended a surface area of 0.25 to 0.8% of catchment area for planted CW and 0.26 to 0.9% for unplanted CW using the 7.5 to 10 mm design rainfall.

Abstract
This communication describes the application of a modified sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), termed Multimer Detection System (MDS) for the detection of disease-associated multimeric forms of the prion protein (PrPd) in hamster blood. PrPd was detected in plasma of prion-affected hamsters while MDS revealed no PrPd in identically-treated plasma of healthy animals. This is the first report of a single ELISA- based immune detection of PrPd from blood samples.

Abstract
Wild Triticeae grasses serve as important gene pools for forage and cereal crops. Understanding their genome compositions is pivotal for efficient use of this vast gene pool in germplasm-enhancement programs. Several cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) markers were developed to distinguish the Eb, Ee, and R genomes. With the aid of disomic addition lines of wheat, it was confirmed that all 7 chromosomes of Eb, Ee, and R genomes carry these genome-specific CAPS markers. Thus, the identified CAPS markers are useful in detecting and monitoring the chromosomes of these 3 genomes. This study also provides evidence suggesting that some Purdue and Chinese germplasm lines developed for barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) resistance are different from those developed in Australia. Furthermore, Thinopyrum intermedium and Thinopyrum ponticum were shown to have different genome constitutions. Sequence analyses of the 1272 bp sequences, containing Ty3/gypsy retrotransposons, from the Eb, Ee, and R genomes also shed light on the evolution of these 3 genomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to demonstrate that the therapeutic efficacy of an estradiol 1mg/drospirenone 2mg (E2/DRSP) preparation is superior to a placebo in postmenopausal Korean women with hot flushes and other climacteric symptoms, and to demonstrate that this treatment is both safe and tolerable. METHODS This was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter study over four 28-day treatment cycles. A total of 158 subjects were screened and 90 women were randomized into two treatment groups (E2/DRSP group, n=45; placebo group, n=45). The primary efficacy parameter was the individual relative change of hot flushes. The secondary efficacy parameters such as other climacteric, urogenital symptoms and vaginal bleeding patterns were also evaluated, and the occurrence of any adverse events was noted. In addition, physical, gynecological examinations and laboratory analyses were performed at the beginning and end of the study. RESULTS The mean number of hot flushes per week during treatment weeks 3-16 decreased by 48.1% during treatment with placebo, and by 84.4% during treatment with E2/DRSP (p<0.001). The E2/DRSP combination also reduced the incidence and intensity of menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women. Most of adverse events was mild or moderate degree of intensity. None of the parameters measured in the study, including laboratory analyses, physical and gynecological examinations, vital signs, and weight, led to any concerns of safety. CONCLUSIONS The E2 1mg/DRSP 2mg combination tested in the study was efficacious and safe in the treatment of hot flushes and other climacteric symptoms in postmenopausal Korean women.

Abstract
Mu opioid (MOP) agonists acting in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) robustly enhance consumption of palatable foods. In addition, the effect on consumption of palatable foods produced by MOP agonists acting in the NAcc depends on both recent flavor exposure and the availability of a choice between different-flavored foods. In contrast, kappa opioid (KOP) agonists have variable effects on feeding and KOP agonists have MOP opposing behavioral actions when microinjected at several brain sites. We previously demonstrated that NAcc MOP agonists reverse the devaluation (satiety) effect of pre-feeding for a given flavor; in fact, NAcc MOP agonists selectively increase consumption of a recently sampled food. In contrast, in the present study, we found that the selective KOP agonist U50488 injected into the NAcc of rats reduced consumption of a recently sampled flavor while increasing consumption of the flavor that was not pre-fed. Intra-NAcc U50488 did not affect overall consumption or flavor preference in the absence of pre-feeding. The present data, in conjunction with our previous findings, highlight the robust and opposing role of NAcc MOP and KOP opioid receptors in palatability-based food choice and consumption and raise the possibility that an endogenous KOP agonist acting in the NAcc contributes to the phenomenon of sensory specific satiety.

Abstract
Opioid signaling in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) strongly modulates flavor-based food choice. To further investigate the role of opioid signaling in taste reward, we used a sensory specific satiety (SSS) paradigm to devalue specific flavors of nutritionally identical food pellets in rats. In the NAcc, infusion of a mu opioid (MOP) receptor selective agonist selectively increased consumption of a pre-fed flavor, thus reversing the SSS effect. Conversely, blockade of endogenous opioid signaling with the opioid antagonist naltrexone selectively decreased consumption of a recently consumed flavor, potentiating the SSS effect. No enhancement of consumption was observed if a delay of 3 h was imposed following the intra-NAcc MOP agonist indicating that there were no long-term changes in flavor preference. If a delay was introduced between the initial flavor exposure and the intra-NAcc MOP agonist infusion, pellet consumption was increased non-selectively (irrespective of flavor) suggesting that close temporal contiguity between flavor experience and NAcc opioid action is critical for the opioid effect on flavor preference. In contrast to opioid effects, inactivating NAcc neurons by local microinjection of muscimol (a GABAA agonist) increased consumption of both the pre-fed and non-pre-fed flavors equally. These results demonstrate that opioids released in the NAcc during consumption of palatable foods produce a selective and transient increase in preference for a recently sampled flavor.

Abstract
Opioid signaling in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) regulates feeding behavior, having particularly strong effects on consumption of highly palatable foods. Since macronutrient content may contribute to palatability, it is uncertain whether opioid regulation of food consumption is based primarily on its macronutrient content or its flavor per se. In order to isolate the effect of flavor, we manipulated opioid signaling in the NAcc in rats and quantified consumption of differently flavored but nutritionally identical pellets. When pellets of either flavor were presented alone, microinjection of d-Ala(2),N,Me-Phe(4),Gly-ol(5)-enkephalin (DAMGO (a mu opioid receptor (MOP) agonist)) into the NAcc increased consumption of pellets of both flavors equally. When both flavors of pellets were presented simultaneously, however, DAMGO in the NAcc selectively increased, while naltrexone (a non-selective opioid antagonist) in the NAcc selectively decreased, consumption of the more preferred flavor. Systemic naltrexone injection had no flavor specific effects, decreasing consumption of both flavors equally. Non-selective inactivation of NAcc neurons by local microinjection of muscimol (a GABA(A) agonist) increased consumption of both the more- and less-preferred flavors equally. These results indicate that opioid signaling directly regulates a subset of NAcc neurons that can selectively enhance consumption of preferred palatable foods based exclusively on flavor cues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endometriosis is considered a frequent, benign disease with the ability to undergo neoplastic processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the limitless replication potential of the endometrium in patients with endometriosis by examining human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) mRNA expression and telomerase activity. METHODS Endometrium samples from 30 endometriosis patients and 30 patients without endometriosis were obtained via endometrial biopsy. The expression of hTERT mRNA was determined by real-time RT-PCR assay, and telomerase activity was measured by telomerase repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) assay. RESULTS The mean normalized hTERT (N hTERT) mRNA level was significantly higher in the endometriosis than in the control group (P = 0.013). The mean hTERT mRNA levels during the proliferative phase and during the secretory phase were higher in the endometriosis group than in the control group, although the difference was only significant for the secretory phase (P = 0.036). We found a prominent difference in endometrial telomerase activity between moderate-to-severe endometriosis and the control group (P = 0.048). The levels of hTERT mRNA and telomerase activity increased as the disease became more severe (P = 0.038, P = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS This study showed the overexpression of hTERT mRNA and telomerase activity in the endometrium of endometriosis patients. These finding suggest that replication potential of endometrial cells may have an important role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis.

Abstract
The Ns genome of the genus Psathyrostachys is a component of the polyploid genome in the genus Leymus. Using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), the occurrence and abundance of 2 tandem repetitive sequences from Leymus racemosus (Lam.) Tzvelev, pLrTaiI-1 (TaiI family) and pLrPstI-1 (1 class of 350-bp family), were assayed in 4 species of the genera Psathyrostachys and Leymus. The pLrPstI-1 sequence was absent in all 4 Psathyrostachys species. While P. fragilis and P. huashanica did not have the pLrTaiI-1 sequence, 15 accessions of P. juncea and 2 accessions of P. lanuginosa had pLrTaiI-1 sites ranging in number from 7 to 16 and from 2 to 21, respectively. The numbers of pLrTaiI-1 and pLrPstI-1 sites were 1-24 and 0-30, respectively, in L. ramosus; 2-31 and 5-36 in L. racemosus; 0-4 and 0 in L. mollis; 2-9 and 24-27 in L. secalinus. The FISH assay on pLrTaiI-1 was successfully converted to a sequence-tagged-site polymerase chain reaction (STS-PCR) test using a primer pair designed from the sequence of this repetitive DNA. Seventy-three accessions representing 27 Leymus species were assayed for the abundance of pLrTaiI-1 by STS-PCR. With a few exceptions of uniformity in some accessions, nearly all Leymus species observed were heterogeneous for the abundance of pLrTaiI-1 sequence and no Leymus species was totally devoid of this repetitive sequence. These findings may have significance for the understanding of phylogeny, nature of polyploidy, adaptive ranges, and breeding potential of Leymus species.

Abstract
The frequency-dependent electrical data of the bismuth germanate silicate (BGSO) glasses have been discussed in the framework of the electric modulus representation and the power-law conductivity. The activation energies of the mean electric relaxation time and the direct current (dc) conductivity obtained by the complex modulus analysis show that the BGSO glasses satisfy the Barton, Nakajima, and Namikawa (BNN) relation. The proper relation between the exponent of the power-law conductivity and the stretched exponential of the modulus representation is shown. The temperature- and frequency-dependent characteristics of non-Debye behavior are discussed. The scaling properties of both the modulus M*(omega) and the alternating current (ac) conductivity sigma(omega) are examined.

Abstract
Forage kochia (Kochia prostrata ssp. virescens 'Immigrant' is native to the arid and semiarid regions of central Eurasia. It was introduced into the United States in 1966 as PI 314929 and released as a perennial forage shrub in 1984. Kochia americana is a perennial native to the United States, whereas Kochia scorparia is an introduced annual species that became a weed. To assess both the breeding potential and the possibility of genetic contamination, relationships among the 3 Kochia species were analyzed using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, sequence tagged site (STS) marker sequences of the chloroplast NADH dehydrogenase gene (ndhF), genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), and multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (MC-FISH). Seventy decamer random primers yielded 458 polymorphic bands from 9 plants of K. americana, 20 plants of K. prostrata, and 7 plants of K. scoparia. Fifty-four and 55 species-specific RAPD markers were identified for K. americana and K. prostrata, whereas 80 RAPD markers were specific to K. scoparia. Based on the presence or absence of informative RAPD markers, the 3 species always grouped into 3 distinct clusters in a NTSYSpc2.01b-generated dendrogram. The same relationships were found among the 3 Kochia species based on ndhF DNA sequence divergence. Using a set of 7 STS markers that can identify each Kochia species, we did not find a single interspecific hybrid from artificial hybridizations among the 3 Kochia species. In GISH studies, chromosomes of 1 species fluoresced in green only when they were probed by genomic DNA of the same species. Cross-hybridization by genomic DNA of another species was not observed. In FISH studies using pTa71 (for 18S-5.8S-26S rDNAs) and pScT7 (for 5S rDNA) as probes, there were 1, 1 and 3 pTa71 sites and 2, 1, and 1 pScT7 sites in each haplome of K. prostrata, K. americana, and K. scoparia, respectively. It is concluded that these 3 Kochia species are so genomically distinct that gene introgression among them would be extremely rare.

Abstract
Interstitial collagenase activity stimulates bone resorption by mouse marrow osteoclasts [1]. Here, we show that collagenase activity promotes bone resorption by activating adherent osteoclasts to resorb bone. Inhibition of interstitial collagenase activity, either with peptidomimetic hydroxymates or with a specific anti-interstitial collagenase inhibiting antibody, reduced bone resorption by 73-92%. Equal numbers of osteoclasts adhered to bone in the presence of collagenase inhibitors and osteoclast survival was unaffected. In contrast, formation of actin rings and polarization of the vacuolar-H+-ATPase (V-ATPase) to ruffled membranes, two indicators of osteoclast activation, were decreased by inhibiting collagenase activity and stimulated in the presence of cleaved or heat-denatured type I collagen in proportion to increases and decreases of bone resorptive activity. Addition of excess recombinant osteoprotegerin-ligand to cultures did not restore bone resorption in the presence of interstitial collagenase inhibitors. These data support the hypothesis that cleaved collagen stimulates osteoclastic bone resorption by triggering cytoskeletal reorganization and transport of V-ATPase from cytoplasmic stores to ruffled membranes.

Abstract
Osteoclasts resorb bone through a cyclical process of attachment to matrix, polarization, retraction, and migration. Although this process requires major alterations in the organization of actin structures, little is known about roles that myosins play in osteoclast cytoskeletal dynamics. We performed immunolocalization of myosin II using antibodies against heavy chain isoforms IIA and IIB and found that osteoclasts expressed the isoforms in distinct subcellular locations. Myosin IIA was enriched in dynamic cytoskeletal compartments, including the sealing zones of polarized and unpolarized osteoclasts. In contrast, myosin IIB was generally absent from these regions and maintained a comparatively static distribution during different phases of the osteoclast activation cycle. Inhibition of myosin II in osteoclasts by treatment with 2,3-butanedione monoxime caused detachment of unpolarized, but not polarized, cells from the bone matrix. These results suggest that myosin IIA is critical to development of an activated osteoclast phenotype.

Abstract
Ectopic pancreas is rare, being found in between 0.6 % and 15 % at autopsy. Heterotopic pancreas is usually an asymptomatic condition which is found incidentally at surgery or at autopsy. Occasionally, significant symptoms arise from complications, such as recurrent upper gastrointestinal bleeding, biliary or intestinal obstruction, or malignant degeneration. Malignant change is very rare. We report a case of malignant change (adenocarcinoma) in an ectopic pancreas in the stomach. In the literature, there are eight reported cases of malignant change in ectopic gastric pancreas. The prognosis in the other reported cases is unknown, but in our patient, the tumor was confined to the muscle of the stomach and there was no lymph node invasion.

Abstract
Functional and molecular biological evidence exists for the expression of ryanodine receptors in non-muscle cells. In the present study, RT-PCR and 5'-rapid amplification of cDNA 5'-end (5'-RACE analysis) provided evidence for the presence of a type 1 ryanodine receptor/Ca2+ channel (RyR1) in diverse cell types. In parotid gland-derived 3-9 (epithelial) cells, the 3'-end 1589 nucleotide sequence for a rat RyR shared 99% homology with rat brain RyR1. Expression of this RyR mRNA sequence in exocrine acinar cells, endocrine cells, and liver in addition to skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle, suggests wide tissue distribution of the RyR1. Positive identification of a 5'-end sequence was made for RyR1 mRNA in rat skeletal muscle and brain, but not in parotid cells, pancreatic islets, insulinoma cells, or liver. These data suggest that a modified RyR1 is present in exocrine and endocrine cells, and liver. Western blot analysis showed L-type Ca2+ channel-related proteins in parotid acinar cells, which were of comparable size to those identified in skeletal and cardiac muscle, and in brain. Immunocytochemistry carried out on intact parotid acini demonstrated that the dihydropyridine receptor was preferentially co-localized with the IP3 receptor in the apical membranes. From these data we conclude that certain non-muscle cells express a modified RyR1 and L-type Ca2+ channel proteins. These receptor/channels may play a role in Ca2+ signaling involving store-operated Ca2+ influx via receptor-mediated channels.

Abstract
Nucleophilic substitution reactions of N-methyl-N-arylcarbamoyl chlorides (YC(6)H(4)N(CH(3))COCl) with pyridines (XC(5)H(4)N) have been investigated in dimethyl sulfoxide at 45.0 degrees C. A striking trend in the selectivity parameters is that they are constant within experimental errors, rho(X) = -2.25 +/- 0.03, beta(X) = 0.42 +/- 0.01, and rho(Y) = 1.10 +/- 0.06, with changing reactivities of the electrophiles (deltasigma(Y)) and nucleophiles (deltasigma(X)), respectively, and this leads to a vanishingly small cross-interaction constant, rho(XY) approximately equals beta(XY) approximately equals 0. The rate data can be expressed in the Ritchie N(+) type equation. Based on this and other results, the mechanism of nucleophile (pyridine) addition to the resonance- stabilized carbocation is proposed. It has been shown from the definition of beta(XY) (and rho(XY)) together with the Marcus equation that the high intrinsic barrier, DeltaG(0), in the intrinsic-barrier controlled reaction series is a prerequisite for such reactions in which the cross-interaction vanishes and the N(+) relationship holds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The requirement for subsequent cholecystectomy in patients with gallbladder in situ after endoscopic removal of stones from the common bile duct (CBD) is controversial. The aims of this study were to assess the requirement for subsequent cholecystectomy for gallbladder-related symptoms, and to identify the patients who develop symptoms after the endoscopic removal of CBD stones. METHODS Of 241 patients with gallbladder in situ following endoscopic removal of stones from the CBD, 146 patients (78 men and 68 women; mean age 69 +/- 13 years, range 20-93) with a follow-up time of more than three months without elective cholecystectomy were enrolled in the study. Fifty-nine patients had gallbladder stones (single stones in 27 and multiple stones in 32) and 87 patients had gallbladder in situ without stones. The time from entry to the occurrences of death or cholecystectomy was evaluated retrospectively. Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the risk factors associated with these events. RESULTS The mean duration of follow-up was 24.1 +/- 18.0 months (range 3-70 months). During follow-up, seven patients (4.8%) underwent cholecystectomy, on average 18.4 months after CBD stone removal, as the result of acute cholecystitis in four cases, biliary pain in two cases and acute pancreatitis in one case. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed in four patients and open cholecystectomy in three patients. Post-operative morbidity occurred in two patients, with improvement after conservative management. Nine patients (6.2%) died as the result of unrelated biliary disease. Age, sex, presence of gallbladder stones, multiplicity of gallbladder stones and underlying disease did not correlate with subsequent cholecystectomy by Cox regression analysis. CONCLUSION Elective cholecystectomy is not warranted in patients with bile duct stones when the common duct can be cleared of stones by endoscopic sphincterotomy. We could not find any clinical predictors of further symptoms or complications arising from the retained gallbladder.
