Abstract
We present a method to implement ultrafast two-qubit gates valid for the ultrastrong coupling and deep strong coupling regimes of light-matter interaction, considering state-of-the-art circuit quantum electrodynamics technology. Our proposal includes a suitable qubit architecture and is based on a four-step sequential displacement of the intracavity field, operating at a time proportional to the inverse of the resonator frequency. Through ab initio calculations, we show that these quantum gates can be performed at subnanosecond time scales while keeping a fidelity above 99%.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Treated HIV-1-infected patients with lipodystrophy often develop insulin resistance and proatherogenic dyslipidaemia. Zinc alpha-2 glycoprotein (ZAG) is a recently characterized adipokine which has been shown to be involved in the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome in uninfected subjects. We assessed the relationship between circulating ZAG levels and metabolic derangements in HIV-1-infected patients receiving antiretroviral drugs. METHODS Plasma ZAG levels were assessed in 222 individuals: 166 HIV-1-infected patients treated with antiretroviral drugs (77 with lipodystrophy and 89 without lipodystrophy) and 56 uninfected controls. Plasma ZAG levels were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and were correlated with fat distribution abnormalities and metabolic parameters. RESULTS HIV-1-infected patients had lower plasma ZAG levels compared with uninfected controls (P < 0.001). No differences were found in ZAG plasma levels according to the presence of lipodystrophy, components of the metabolic syndrome or type of antiretroviral treatment regimen. Circulating ZAG levels were strongly determined by high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc) in men (B = 0.644; P < 0.001) and showed a positive correlation with total cholesterol (r = 0.312; P < 0.001) and HDLc (r = 0.216; P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS HIV-1-infected patients have lower plasma ZAG levels than uninfected controls. In infected patients, plasma ZAG levels are in close relationship with total cholesterol and HDLc.

Abstract
We propose the quantum simulation of fermion and antifermion field modes interacting via a bosonic field mode, and present a possible implementation with two trapped ions. This quantum platform allows for the scalable add up of bosonic and fermionic modes, and represents an avenue towards quantum simulations of quantum field theories in perturbative and nonperturbative regimes.

Abstract
Different manufacturing processes of Ni-Ti archwires respond differently to corrosion due to the surface conditions involved. In this study, several topographical features and their influence upon fluoride corrosion were studied. Four topographies (smooth, dimple, scratch, and crack) according to the main surface defect were characterized (n = 40). Static corrosion tests were performed in artificial saliva with fluorated prophylactic gel (12500 ppm) for 28 days. The surface was characterized by SEM and laser confocal microscopy. Standard electrochemical corrosion (open circuit potential, corrosion potential and corrosion current density) was performed. Statistical analysis was carried out using the ANOVA test (α ≤ 0.05). An increase was observed in the surface defects and/or roughness of the cracked and scratched surfaces. These defects produced an important increase in corrosion behavior. The best surfaces for the orthodontic archwires were the smooth and dimpled surfaces, respectively. The increase in defects was independent of roughness. Manufacturing processes that produce surface cracks should be avoided in orthodontic applications.

Abstract
We report on quantum simulations of relativistic scattering dynamics using trapped ions. The simulated state of a scattering particle is encoded in both the electronic and vibrational state of an ion, representing the discrete and continuous components of relativistic wave functions. Multiple laser fields and an auxiliary ion simulate the dynamics generated by the Dirac equation in the presence of a scattering potential. Measurement and reconstruction of the particle wave packet enables a frame-by-frame visualization of the scattering processes. By precisely engineering a range of external potentials we are able to simulate text book relativistic scattering experiments and study Klein tunneling in an analogue quantum simulator. We describe extensions to solve problems that are beyond current classical computing capabilities.

Abstract
We study the quantum dynamics of a two-level system interacting with a quantized harmonic oscillator in the deep strong coupling regime (DSC) of the Jaynes-Cummings model, that is, when the coupling strength g is comparable or larger than the oscillator frequency ω (g/ω≳1). In this case, the rotating-wave approximation cannot be applied or treated perturbatively in general. We propose an intuitive and predictive physical frame to describe the DSC regime where photon number wave packets bounce back and forth along parity chains of the Hilbert space, while producing collapse and revivals of the initial population. We exemplify our physical frame with numerical and analytical considerations in the qubit population, photon statistics, and Wigner phase space.

Abstract
We measure the dispersive energy-level shift of an LC resonator magnetically coupled to a superconducting qubit, which clearly shows that our system operates in the ultrastrong coupling regime. The large mutual kinetic inductance provides a coupling energy of ≈ 0.82 GHz, requiring the addition of counter-rotating-wave terms in the description of the Jaynes-Cummings model. We find a 50 MHz Bloch-Siegert shift when the qubit is in its symmetry point, fully consistent with our analytical model.

Abstract
To analyse in a cohort of healthy subjects and in a group of morbidly obese patients, we studied the association amongst 25(OH) D and plasma concentrations of adipocytokines, inflammatory cytokines and insulin resistance. We also aimed to determine whether vitamin D-deficient patients showed a greater inflammatory profile. In the observational study that the authors conducted, plasma concentrations of 25(OH) D, leptin, resistin, adiponectin and interleukine-18 were determined in 134 healthy men and 127 women. In the population consisting of 44 patients with morbid obesity, plasma concentrations of 25(OH) D, leptin, resistin, adiponectin, interleukine-18, soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors 1 and 2 and C-reactive protein were analysed. In the healthy population, plasma 25(OH) D showed a negative correlation with body mass index, body fat, waist, hip circumference and with leptin. However, no significant associations were found amongst 25(OH) D and plasma concentrations of resistin, adiponectin or interleukine-18. Patients with vitamin D deficiency showed higher body mass index, fat mass percentage and higher leptin concentrations compared with subjects with normal 25(OH) D concentrations. In the morbidly obese subjects, 25(OH) D did not correlate with leptin, resistin, adiponectin, interleukine-18, soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors 1 and 2 or with C-reactive protein. In patients with morbid obesity, no differences were found in adipokines and inflammatory cytokines concentrations regarding 25(OH) D status. No associations were found either between 25(OH) D and plasma glucose and insulin resistance or with lipid profile. Plasma 25(OH) D concentrations are associated with adiposity markers but not with adipocytokines implicated in inflammation. This lack of association does not support a major role of 25(OH) D in the pro-inflammatory environment observed in morbidly obese subjects. In addition, subjects with vitamin D deficiency are not characterized by a greater inflammatory state.

Abstract
We use a correlation function analysis of the field quadratures to characterize both the blackbody radiation emitted by a 50 Ω load resistor and the quantum properties of two types of beam splitters in the microwave regime. To this end, we first study vacuum fluctuations as a function of frequency in a Planck spectroscopy experiment and then measure the covariance matrix of weak thermal states. Our results provide direct experimental evidence that vacuum fluctuations represent the fundamental minimum quantum noise added by a beam splitter to any given input signal.

Abstract
Quantum state reconstruction of weak propagating microwaves to date requires the use of linear amplifiers. We introduce a theory which, even in the presence of significant amplifier noise, allows one to use these devices for measuring all quadrature moments of propagating quantum microwaves based on cross correlations from a dual-path amplification setup. Simultaneously, the detector noise properties are determined, allowing for tomography. We demonstrate the feasibility of our novel concept by proof-of-principle experiments with classical mixtures of weak coherent microwaves.

Abstract
LPIN1 is a gene with important effects on lipidic and metabolic homeostasis. Human subcutaneous LPIN1 expression levels in adipose tissue are related with a better metabolic profile, including insulin sensitivity markers. However, there are few data on the regulation of LPIN1 in visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Our aim was to perform a cross-sectional analysis of VAT compared with subcutaneous (SAT) LPIN1 expression in a well-characterized obese cohort, its relation with the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism, and the in vitro response to lipogenic and lipolytic stimuli. A downregulation of total LPIN1 mRNA expression in subjects with obesity was found in VAT similarly to that in SAT. Despite similar total LPIN1 mRNA levels in SAT and VAT, a close relationship with clinical parameters and with many lipogenic and lipolytic genes was observed primarily in SAT depot. As shown in the in vitro analysis, the low-grade proinflammatory environment and the insulin resistance associated with obesity may contribute to downregulate LPIN1 in adipose tissue, leading to a worse metabolic profile.

Abstract
We propose different designs of switchable coupling between a superconducting flux qubit and a microwave transmission line. They are based on two or more loops of Josephson junctions which are directly connected to a closed (cavity) or open transmission line. In both cases the circuit induces a coupling that can be modulated in strength, reaching the so-called ultrastrong coupling regime in which the coupling is comparable to the qubit and photon frequencies. Furthermore, we suggest a wide set of applications for the introduced architectures.

Abstract
We experimentally demonstrate a quantum walk on a line in phase space using one and two trapped ions. A walk with up to 23 steps is realized by subjecting an ion to state-dependent displacement operations interleaved with quantum coin tossing operations. To analyze the ion's motional state after each step we apply a technique that directly maps the probability density distribution onto the ion's internal state. The measured probability distributions and the position's second moment clearly show the nonclassical character of the quantum walk. To further highlight the difference between the classical (random) and the quantum walk, we demonstrate the reversibility of the latter. Finally, we extend the quantum walk by using two ions, giving the walker the additional possibility to stay instead of taking a step.

Abstract
We solve the entanglement classification under stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) for all multipartite symmetric states in the general N-qubit case. For this purpose, we introduce 2 parameters playing a crucial role, namely, the diversity degree and the degeneracy configuration of a symmetric state. Those parameters give rise to a simple method of identifying operational families of SLOCC entanglement classes of all symmetric N-qubit states, where the number of families grows as the partition function of the number of qubits.

Abstract
In this Letter we design a metamaterial composed of discrete superconducting elements that implements a high-efficiency microwave photon detector. Our design consists of a microwave guide coupled to an array of metastable quantum circuits, whose internal states are irreversibly changed due to the absorption of photons. This proposal can be widely applied to different physical systems and can be generalized to implement a microwave photon counter.

Abstract
We present a physical setup with which it is possible to produce arbitrary symmetric long-lived multiqubit entangled states in the internal ground levels of photon emitters, including the paradigmatic Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and W states. In the case of three emitters, where each tripartite entangled state belongs to one of two well-defined entanglement classes, we prove a one-to-one correspondence between well-defined sets of experimental parameters, i.e., locally tunable polarizer orientations, and multiqubit entanglement classes inside the symmetric subspace.

Abstract
We study the possibility for a global unitary applied on an arbitrary number of qubits to be decomposed in a sequential unitary procedure, where an ancillary system is allowed to interact only once with each qubit. We prove that sequential unitary decompositions are in general impossible for genuine entangling operations, even with an infinite-dimensional ancilla, being the controlled-NOT gate a paradigmatic example. Nevertheless, we find particular nontrivial operations in quantum information that can be performed in a sequential unitary manner, as is the case of quantum error correction and quantum cloning.

Abstract
The model repository (MREP) is a relational database management system (RDBMS) developed under the auspices of models of infectious disease agent study (MIDAS). The purpose of the MREP is to organize and catalog the models, results, and suggestions for using the MIDAS and to store them in a way to allow users to run models from an access-controlled disease MREP. The MREP contains source and object code of disease models developed by infectious disease modelers and tested in a production environment. Different versions of models used to describe various aspects of the same disease are housed in the repository. Models are linked to their developers and different versions of the codes are tied to Subversion, a version control tool. An additional element of the MREP will be to house, manage, and control access to a disease model results warehouse, which consists of output generated by the models contained in the MREP. The result tables and files are linked to the version of the model and the input parameters that collectively generated the results. The result tables are warehoused in a relational database that permits them to be easily identified, categorized, and downloaded.

Abstract
We study the entanglement dynamics of two cavities interacting with independent reservoirs. Expectedly, as the cavity entanglement is depleted, it is transferred to the reservoir degrees of freedom. We find also that when the cavity entanglement suddenly disappears, the reservoir entanglement suddenly and necessarily appears. Surprisingly, we show that this entanglement sudden birth can manifest before, simultaneously, or even after entanglement sudden death. Finally, we present an explanatory study of other entanglement partitions and of higher dimensional systems.

We propose a method for generating all symmetric Dicke states, either in the long-lived internal levels of N massive particles or in the polarization degrees of freedom of photonic qubits, using linear optical tools only. By means of a suitable multiphoton detection technique, erasing Welcher-Weg information, our proposed scheme allows the generation and measurement of an important class of entangled multiqubit states.

Abstract
We propose a technique to obtain subwavelength resolution in quantum imaging with potentially 100% contrast using incoherent light. Our method requires neither path-entangled number states nor multiphoton absorption. The scheme makes use of N photons spontaneously emitted by N atoms and registered by N detectors. It is shown that for coincident detection at particular detector positions a resolution of lambda/N can be achieved.

Abstract
We show that a linear superposition of mesoscopic states in relativistic Landau levels can be built when an external magnetic field couples to a relativistic spin 1/2 charged particle. Under suitable initial conditions, the associated Dirac equation produces unitarily superpositions of coherent states involving the particle orbital quanta in a well-defined mesoscopic regime. We demonstrate that these mesoscopic superpositions have a purely relativistic origin and disappear in the nonrelativistic limit.

Abstract
We present a method of simulating the Dirac equation in 3+1 dimensions for a free spin-1/2 particle in a single trapped ion. The Dirac bispinor is represented by four ionic internal states, and position and momentum of the Dirac particle are associated with the respective ionic variables. We show also how to simulate the simplified 1+1 case, requiring the manipulation of only two internal levels and one motional degree of freedom. Moreover, we study relevant quantum-relativistic effects, like the Zitterbewegung and Klein's paradox, the transition from massless to massive fermions, and the relativistic and nonrelativistic limits, via the tuning of controllable experimental parameters.

Not all unitary operations upon a set of qubits can be implemented by sequential interactions between each qubit and an ancillary system. We analyze the specific case of sequential quantum cloning, 1-->M, and prove that the minimal dimension D of the ancilla grows linearly with the number of clones M. In particular, we obtain D=2M for symmetric universal quantum cloning and D=M+1 for symmetric phase-covariant cloning. Furthermore, we provide a recipe for the required ancilla-qubit interactions in each step of the sequential procedure for both cases.

Abstract
We present the experimental observation of the symmetric four-photon entangled Dicke state with two excitations |D_{4};{(2)}. A simple experimental setup allowed quantum state tomography yielding a fidelity as high as 0.844+/-0.008. We study the entanglement persistency of the state using novel witness operators and focus on the demonstration of a remarkable property: depending on the orientation of a measurement on one photon, the remaining three photons are projected into both inequivalent classes of genuine tripartite entanglement, the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and W class. Furthermore, we discuss possible applications of |D_{4};{(2)} in quantum communication.

Abstract
We present a method of measuring the quantum state of a harmonic oscillator through instantaneous probe-system selective interactions of the Jaynes-Cummings type. We prove that this scheme is robust to general decoherence mechanisms, allowing the possibility of measuring fast-decaying systems in the weak-coupling regime. This method could be applied to different setups: motional states of trapped ions, microwave fields in cavity or circuit QED, and even intracavity optical fields.

We define weak and strong criteria for relativistic isoentangled and isodistillable states to characterize relative and invariant behavior of entanglement and distillability. Abstract
We propose schemes for the unconditional preparation of a two-mode squeezed state of effective bosonic modes realized in a pair of atomic ensembles interacting collectively with optical cavity and laser fields. The scheme uses Raman transitions between stable atomic ground states and under ideal conditions produces pure entangled states in the steady state. The scheme works both for ensembles confined within a single cavity and for ensembles confined in separate, cascaded cavities.

Abstract
We propose a method of generating unitarily single and two-mode field squeezing in an optical cavity with an atomic cloud. Through a suitable laser system, we are able to engineer a squeeze field operator decoupled from the atomic degrees of freedom, yielding a large squeeze parameter that is scaled up by the number of atoms, and realizing degenerate and nondegenerate parametric amplification. By means of the input-output theory we show that ideal squeezed states and perfect squeezing could be approached at the output. The scheme is robust to decoherence processes.

Abstract
We consider the deterministic generation of entangled multiqubit states by the sequential coupling of an ancillary system to initially uncorrelated qubits. We characterize all achievable states in terms of classes of matrix-product states and give a recipe for the generation on demand of any multiqubit state. The proposed methods are suitable for any sequential generation scheme, though we focus on streams of single-photon time-bin qubits emitted by an atom coupled to an optical cavity. We show, in particular, how to generate familiar quantum information states such as W, Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger, and cluster states within such a framework.

Abstract
The main objective of this work has been the characterisation and correlation of the wear behaviour of the NiTi shape memory alloys in their different phases. The weight losses for the different alloys in function of the present phase, and of the M(s) transformation temperature are studied. Adhesive wear tests, Pin-on-Disk, according to the ASTM-G99 standard have been carried out. The thermoelastic martensitic transformations that cause the super-elastic effect, the reorientation and coalescence of martensitic plates and the damping effect promotes a high ability to accommodate large deformations without generating permanent damages that causes the wear. The resulting plastic deformation may be accumulated during wear process without generating fracture. The results show that the wear resistance is mainly dependent of the M(s) transformation temperature for both alloys. For the NiTi alloys also the Ni atomic percentage and the hardness of the alloys are important parameters in the wear behavior.

We show how to perform universal quantum computation with atoms confined in optical lattices which works both in the presence of defects and without individual addressing. The method is based on using the defects in the lattice, wherever they are, both to "mark" different copies on which ensemble quantum computation is carried out and to define pointer atoms which perform the quantum gates. We also show how to overcome the problem of scalability in this system.

Abstract
Transformation temperatures and mechanical properties such as transformation stresses at different temperatures and the superelasticity have been investigated in NiTiCu alloys with various Copper concentrations. The results have been compared with the conventional NiTi alloys. The addition of copper was effective to narrow the stress hysteresis and to stabilize the superelasticity characteristics. Moreover, it produced greater stability on both the transformation temperatures and the forces applied to the different tissues. However, the studies of cell cultured with human fibroblasts showed certain toxicity.

Abstract
The effects of nickel (Ni) allergy from NiTi alloys were reduced due to the titanium nitrided coating obtained by nitrogen gas diffusion at different temperatures. The samples were immersed in artificial saliva at 37 degrees C for different periods demonstrating that the titanium nitride coating prevents biodegradation. In addition, the lack of low friction coefficient for the NiTi super-elastic archwires makes the optimal use of these materials in orthodontic applications difficult. Abstract
BACKGROUND Selection criteria for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) suitable for liver transplantation (LT) include tumor size and number and vascular invasion. There has been a recent trend to expand the transplant criteria for HCC. We reviewed our experience to determine survival following LT based on tumor characteristics. METHODS A retrospective analysis was performed on 72 patients with HCC who underwent LT between 1985 and July 2002. The Milan criteria were applied for LT candidacy for HCCs that were deemed unresectable from anatomical considerations and/or the severity of underlying cirrhosis. Patients were divided into four groups: group 1: patients with known HCC who satisfied the selection criteria (n = 22); group 2: patients with known HCC that exceeded the criteria (n = 17); group 3: patients with incidental HCC found at pathological examination of the explant (n = 33); group 4: contemporary LT recipients without HCC (n = 935). RESULTS In the known HCC group, the interval between listing as status 2 and transplantation was 72.2 +/- 133.6 days (median 23 days). Three-year patient survival was 80.2% in group 1, 35.8% in group 2, 63.2% in group 3, and 81.5% in group 4. In group 2 patients, the tumors were significantly larger, had more nodules, and were more often bilobar. In group 3, five (15%) exceeded the criteria mainly because of tumor size and four patients died within 3 years post-LT (three from tumor recurrence). CONCLUSION Liver transplantation for HCC yields acceptable survival in early-stage tumors, particularly if transplanted soon after listing. Long-term survival was inferior in patients with multiple tumors and tumors that were greater than 5 cm in diameter.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic disease that progresses to end-stage liver disease. This report is a retrospective analysis of a Canadian centre experience with liver transplantation (LT) for PSC. Of 1107 LTs performed between 1984 and 2002, 132 were performed on 111 patients with PSC. Patient survival at 1, 3, 5, and 10 years was 84.5%, 84.5%, 83.4%, and 68.9%, respectively. Graft survival at 1, 3, 5, and 10 years was 80.8%, 79.8%, 72.7%, and 55.3%. These were not significantly different from overall patient survival (P =.91) or graft survival (P =.28) in non-PSC patients transplanted over the same time period. Early mortality was predominantly related to primary nonfunction and multi-organ failure; late mortality was predominantly related to malignancy. No patient with known cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) underwent LT, but three patients had an incidental CCA noted on explant pathology. All three died of widespread metastatic disease (10.8, 38.0, and 39.8 months after LT). Nineteen patients lost their primary grafts requiring retransplantation, and two of these patients required a third transplant. Recurrent PSC was detected in six patients and suspected in another six. Four patients have been retransplanted for recurrent PSC. Chronic rejection was detected in nine patients. Eight have required retransplantation. The incidence of biliary complications was 16.2%. CONCLUSIONS LT is effective therapy for PSC. Patient and graft survival is comparable to that seen in patients transplanted for indications other than PSC, but long-term graft survival may be lower. Recurrent PSC and chronic rejection are the major determinants of graft loss.

We present an operational definition of the Wigner function. Our method relies on the Fresnel transform of measured Rabi oscillations and applies to motional states of trapped atoms as well as to field states in cavities. We illustrate this technique using data from recent experiments in ion traps [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1796 (1996)]] and in cavity QED [Nature (London) 403, 743 (2000)]]. The values of the Wigner functions of the underlying states at the origin of phase space are W(|0>)(0)=+1.75 for the vibrational ground state and W(|1>)(0)=-1.4 for the one-photon number state. We generalize this method to wave packets in arbitrary potentials.

We propose a realistic scheme for measuring the micromaser linewidth by monitoring the phase diffusion dynamics of the cavity field. Our strategy consists of exciting an initial coherent state with the same photon number distribution as the micromaser steady-state field, singling out a purely diffusive process in the system dynamics. After the injection of a counterfield, measurements of the population statistics of a probe atom allow us to derive the micromaser linewidth in all ranges of the relevant parameters, establishing experimentally the distinctive features of the micromaser spectrum due to the discreteness of the electromagnetic field.

Abstract
We propose a method of generating multipartite entanglement by considering the interaction of a system of N two-level atoms in a cavity of high quality factor with a strong classical driving field. It is shown that, with a judicious choice of the cavity detuning and the applied coherent field detuning, vacuum Rabi coupling produces a large number of important multipartite entangled states. It is even possible to produce entangled states involving different cavity modes. Tuning of parameters also permits us to switch from Jaynes-Cummings to anti-Jaynes-Cummings-like interaction.

Abstract
Simultaneous current ramping and application of lower hybrid heating and current drive (LHCD) have produced a region with zero current density within measurement errors in the core ( r/a< or =0.2) of JET tokamak optimized shear discharges. The reduction of core current density is consistent with a simple physical explanation and numerical simulations of radial current diffusion including the effects of LHCD. However, the core current density is clamped at zero, indicating the existence of a physical mechanism which prevents it from becoming negative.

Abstract
We propose a scheme for producing large Fock states in cavity QED via the implementation of a highly selective atom-field interaction. It is based on Raman excitation of a three-level atom by a classical field and a quantized field mode. Selectivity appears when one tunes to resonance a specific transition inside a chosen atom-field subspace, while other transitions remain dispersive, as a consequence of the field dependent electronic energy shifts. We show that this scheme can be also employed for reconstructing, in a new and efficient way, the Wigner function of the cavity field state.
