Abstract
BACKGROUND Cough is a common symptom during and after COVID-19 infection; however, few studies have described the cough profiles of COVID-19. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence, severity, and associated risk factors of severe and persistent cough in individuals with COVID-19 during the latest wave of the Omicron variant in China. METHODS In this nationwide cross-sectional study, we collected information of the characteristics of cough from individuals with infection of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant using an online questionnaire sent between December 31, 2022, and January 11, 2023. RESULTS There were 11,718 (n=7978, 68.1% female) nonhospitalized responders, with a median age of 37 (IQR 30-47) years who responded at a median of 16 (IQR 12-20) days from infection onset to the time of the survey. Cough was the most common symptom, occurring in 91.7% of participants, followed by fever, fatigue, and nasal congestion (68.8%-87.4%). The median cough visual analog scale (VAS) score was 70 (IQR 50-80) mm. Being female (odds ratio [OR] 1.31, 95% CI 1.20-1.43), having a COVID-19 vaccination history (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.37-2.12), current smoking (OR 0.48, 95% CI 0.41-0.58), chronic cough (OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.69-2.45), coronary heart disease (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.17-2.52), asthma (OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.02-1.46), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.01-1.45) were independent factors for severe cough (VAS>70, 37.4%). Among all respondents, 35.0% indicated having a productive cough, which was associated with risk factors of being female (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.31-1.57), having asthma (OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.52-2.22), chronic cough (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.19-1.74), and GERD (OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.01-1.47). Persistent cough (>3 weeks) occurred in 13.0% of individuals, which was associated with the risk factors of having diabetes (OR 2.24, 95% CI 1.30-3.85), asthma (OR 1.70, 95% CI 1.11-2.62), and chronic cough (OR 1.97, 95% CI 1.32-2.94). CONCLUSIONS Cough is the most common symptom in nonhospitalized individuals with Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant infection. Being female, having asthma, chronic cough, GERD, coronary heart disease, diabetes, and a COVID-19 vaccination history emerged as independent factors associated with severe cough, productive cough, and persistent cough.

Abstract
Background Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a collection of neurodevelopmental diseases characterized by poor social interaction and communication, a limited range of interests, and stereotyped behavior. High-functioning autism (HFA) indicates a subgroup of individuals with autism who possess cognitive and/or language skills that are within the average to above-normal range for their age. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) holds promise in children with HFA. However, few studies have used randomized controlled trials to validate the effectiveness of taVNS. Therefore, in this study, we intend to provide a study protocol to examine the therapeutic effects of taVNS in individuals diagnosed with HFA and to investigate the process of brain network remodeling in individuals with ASD using functional imaging techniques to observe alterations in large-scale neural networks. Methods and design We planned to employ a randomized, double-blind experimental design, including 40 children receiving sham stimulation and 40 children receiving real stimulation. We will assess clinical scales and perform functional imaging examinations before and after the stimulation. Additionally, we will include age- and gender-matched healthy children as controls and conduct functional imaging examinations. We plan first to observe the therapeutic effects of taVNS. Furthermore, we will observe the impact of taVNS stimulation on the brain network. Discussion taVNS was a low-risk, easy-to-administer, low-cost, and portable option to modulate the vagus system. taVNS may improve the social performance of HFA. Changes in the network properties of the large-scale brain network may be related to the efficacy of taVNS. Clinical trial registration http://www.chictr.org.cn, identifier ChiCTR2300074035.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of comprehensive echinococcosis control measures with emphasis on management of infectious source in Sichuan Province from 2010 to 2022, so as to provide insights into formulation of future control interventions. METHODS Data pertaining to comprehensive echinococcosis control measures with emphasis on management of infectious source and echinococcosis surveillance in Sichuan Province from 2010 to 2022 were collected. The effectiveness of comprehensive echinococcosis control measures with emphasis on management of infectious source was evaluated with prevalence of human echinococcosis, detection of newly diagnosed echinococcosis patients, prevalence of Echinococcus infection in domestic dogs, prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in livestock, prevalence of alveolar echinococcosis in small mammals and awareness of echinococcosis control knowledge, and Spearman's rank correlation analysis. RESULTS The prevalence of human echinococcosis reduced from 1.08% in 2010 to 0.40% in 2022 in Sichuan Province (χ2 = 1 482.97, P < 0.05), with a reduction from 0.30% to 0.02% in the detection of newly diagnosed echinococcosis cases (χ2 = 2 776.41, P < 0.05), a reduction from 15.87% to 0.46% in the prevalence of Echinococcus infection in domestic dogs (χ2 = 20 823.96, P < 0.05), a reduction from 8.05% to 1.07% in the prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in livestock (χ2 = 1 296.02, P < 0.05), and the awareness of echinococcosis control knowledge increased from 50.65% to 95.24% (χ2 = 34 938.63, P < 0.05); in addition, there was a year-specific prevalence rate of alveolar echinococcosis in small mammals (χ2 = 164.07, P < 0.05). Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed that the detection of newly diagnosed echinococcosis cases correlated positively with the prevalence of Echinococcus infections in domestic dogs (rs = 0.823, P < 0.05) and the prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in livestock (rs = 0.795, P < 0.05), and correlated negatively with the awareness of echinococcosis control knowledge (rs = - 0.918, P < 0.05), and the prevalence of Echinococcus infection in domestic dogs correlated positively with the prevalence of cystic echinococcosis in livestock (rs = 0.753, P < 0.05) and negatively with the awareness of echinococcosis control knowledge (rs = -0.747, P < 0.05); however, there was no correlation between the prevalence of Echinococcus infections in domestic dogs and the prevalence of alveolar echinococcosis in small mammals (rs = -0.750, P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The comprehensive echinococcosis control measures with emphasis on management of infectious source had achieved remarkable effectiveness in Sichuan Province; however, the transmission chain of echinococcosis has not been interrupted. Reinforced comprehensive echinococcosis control measures with emphasis on management of infectious source and sustained tracking evaluation of the effectiveness are recommended in Sichuan Province.

Kinetochore scaffold 1 downregulation suppressed the development of non-small cell lung cancer by inactivating the phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase/protein kinase B (AKT)/nuclear factor-kappa B pathway. JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY : AN OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF THE POLISH PHYSIOLOGICAL SOCIETY 2024; 75. Abstract
Kinetochore scaffold 1 (KNL1) is indispensable for generating motile micro-tubule attachments and isolating chromosomes. KNL1 is highly expressed in multiple middle-route tissues and promotes tumor development. However, how it functions in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is unclear. Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and Western blotting (WB) were used to determine KNL1 expression in NSCLC tissues and cells. The sh-KNL1 or oe-KNL1 was transfected into NSCLC cells. The colony formation assay, cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, and flow cytometry were used to evaluate cell proliferation and apoptosis. A transwell assay was used to monitor invasion and migration. The CCK-8 assay was used to measure NSCLC cell sensitivity to chemotherapy drugs. WB confirmed the protein levels of apoptosis-related proteins, cell cycle-associated proteins, and the phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT)/nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB) pathway. A PI3K/AKT/NF-κB pathway inhibitor was used to intervene in NSCLC cell transfection along with oe-KNL1, thus revealing the function of the pathway in carcinogenicity mediated by KNL1. In result KNL1 expression was substantially increased in NSCLC tissues and cells. High-level KNL1 expression is related to the poor prognosis of NSCLC patients. KNL1 silencing bolstered promoted NSCLC cell apoptosis and inhibited proliferation, cell cycle progression, invasion, and EMT, whereas KNL1 silencing had the opposite effect. KNL1 knockdown increased NSCLC cell sensitivity to chemical drugs. KNL1 promoted PI3K/AKT/NF-κB pathway activation, while PI3K/AKT/NF-κB pathway inhibition weakened the procancer effect mediated by KNL1 overexpression but had little influence on KNL1 levels. We conclude that KNL1 activates the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB pathway to increase NSCLC progression and attenuate NSCLC sensitivity to chemotherapy drugs.

Characterization of three glutathione S-transferases potentially associated with adaptation of the wheat blossom midge Sitodiplosis mosellana to host plant defense. Abstract
BACKGROUND Insect glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), a multifunctional protein family, play a crucial role in detoxification of plant defensive compounds. However, they have been rarely investigated in Sitodiplosis mosellana, a destructive pest of wheat worldwide. In this study, we characterized for the first time a delta (SmGSTd1) and two epsilon GST genes (SmGSTe1 and SmGSTe2) and analyzed their expression patterns and functions associated with adaptation to host plant defense in this species. RESULTS Expression of these SmGST genes greatly increased in S. mosellana larvae feeding on resistant wheat varieties Kenong1006, Shanmai139 and Jinmai47 which contain higher tannin and ferulic acid, the major defensive compounds of wheat against this pest, compared with those feeding on susceptible varieties Xinong822, Xinong88 and Xiaoyan22. Their expression was also tissue-specific, most predominant in larval midgut. Recombinant SmGSTs expressed in Escherichia coli could catalyze the conjugation of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene, with activity peak at pH around 7.0 and temperature between 30 and 40 °C. Notably, they could metabolize tannin and ferulic acid, with the strongest metabolic ability by SmGSTe2 against two compounds, followed by SmGSTd1 on tannin, and SmGSTe1 on ferulic acid. CONCLUSION The results suggest that these SmGSTs are important in metabolizing wheat defensive chemicals during feeding, which may be related to host plant adaptation of S. mosellana. Our study has provided information for future investigation and development of strategies such as host-induced gene silencing of insect-detoxifying genes for managing pest adaptation. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
This paper presents the design and development of a high-resolution 3D ultrasound imaging system based on a 1 × 256 piezoelectric ring array, achieving an accuracy of 0.1 mm in both ascending and descending modes. The system achieves an imaging spatial resolution of approximately 0.78 mm. A 256 × 32 cylindrical sensor array and a digital phantom of breast tissue were constructed using the k-Wave toolbox. The signal is acquired layer by layer using 3D acoustic time-domain simulation, resulting in the collection of data from each of the 32 layers. The 1 × 256 ring array moves on a vertical trajectory from the chest wall to the nipple at a constant speed. A data set was collected at intervals of 1.5 mm, resulting in a total of 32 data sets. Surface rendering and volume rendering algorithms were used to reconstruct 3D ultrasound images from the volume data obtained via simulation so that the smallest simulated reconstructed lesion had a diameter of 0.3 mm. The reconstructed three-dimensional image derived from the experimental data exhibits the contour of the breast model along with its internal mass. Reconstructable dimensions can be achieved up to approximately 0.78 mm. The feasibility of applying the system to 3D breast ultrasound imaging has been demonstrated, demonstrating its attributes of resolution, precision, and exceptional efficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase-recruitment domain (ASC) is a promising stroke biomarker. However, a large study of human serum ASC has not yet to be reported; additionally, the diagnostic value of prehospital concentration and practicality of ASC remains unknown. METHODS We recruited 774 Chinese stroke patients, including 523 with ischemic stroke (IS) and 251 with hemorrhagic stroke (HS) within 14 days following symptom onset in the emergency department, alongside 481 healthy individuals and 64 cognitive impairment patients as controls. Serum ASC concentrations were determined using automated chemiluminescence immunoassay, exploring the relationship between serum ASC concentration and subtypes, severity, and sampling timepoints of stroke. RESULTS ASC concentrations were significantly higher in stroke patients compared with all controls (P < 0.001). HS patients had greater ASC concentrations than IS patients (P < 0.05). With increasing ASC concentration, the proportion of severe cases increased. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for differentiating between healthy individuals and stroke patients in the hyperacute phase was 0.78; this markedly improved (0.90) when considering samples from healthy individuals and patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) ≤ 3 h from last-known-well (LKW). CONCLUSIONS Serum ASC is a valuable biomarker for stroke differentiation and aids in the clinical diagnosis of stroke severity and subtypes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) undergo distinct therapy strategies compared with indolent NHL patients. However, it is challenging to estimate NHL aggressiveness based on visual inspection of positron emission tomography (PET) or computed tomography (CT) images. Since diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Follicular lymphoma (FL) are the most typical and dominant aggressive and indolent NHL, respectively, this study aims to develop an artificial-intelligence-enabled model to distinguish DLBCL from FL in PET/CT images as the first step to tackle this challenge. METHODS We propose a hybrid few-shot multiple-instance learning model to predict the aggressiveness of the NHL. First, rotation-based self-supervision learning (SSL) has been employed to train the encoder on a large-scale, publicly available CT image dataset. Second, hybrid instance-level features are obtained for each NHL lesion by combining deep features with the radiomics features from both PET and CT modalities. Third, instance-level features are transformed into bag-level (or patient-level) representations. Finally, bag-level representations are fed into a distance-based classifier through few-shot learning to predict NHL aggressiveness. RESULTS Our model achieves an accuracy of 0.751 ± 0.008, a sensitivity of 0.787 ± 0.012, a specificity of 0.715 ± 0.013, an F1-score of 0.753 ± 0.009, and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.795 ± 0.009 at the bag level. It outperforms the typical counterparts that use the radiomic features, random forest for feature selection, and support vector machines (SVMs) as classifiers. The three counterparts yield accuracies of 0.714 ± 0.023, 0.705 ± 0.008, and 0.698 ± 0.008, respectively. Moreover, settings of the SSL training dataset (Deep lesion) and task (rotation), hybrid CT and radiomic PET features, the pool-layer strategy of maximum, and distance-based classifier generate the best model. CONCLUSIONS A hybrid few-shot multiple-instance learning model can predict lymphoma aggressiveness in PET/CT images and could be a potential tool for determining therapy strategies. Hybrid features and the combination of SSL, few-shot learning, and weakly supervised learning are the two powerful pillars of the model, and these can be expanded to other medical applications with limited samples and incomplete annotations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is closely associated with cardiovascular disease. We aimed to examine the association of Life's Essential 8 (LE8), the recently updated measurement of cardiovascular health, with the prevalence of CKD among US adults. METHODS AND RESULTS This population-based cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2018 and included adults aged ≥20 years. Multivariable logistic and restricted cubic spline models were used to assess the associations between LE8 and CKD. Among 24 960 participants, 4437 were determined to have CKD (weighted percentage, 14.11%). After the adjustment of potential confounders, higher LE8 scores were associated with reduced odds of CKD (odds ratio for each 10-point increase, 0.79 [95% CI, 0.76-0.83]), and a nonlinear dose-response relationship was observed. Similar patterns were also identified in the associations of health behavior and health factor scores with CKD. Meanwhile, higher scores for blood glucose (odds ratio, for each 10-point increase, 0.88 [95% CI, 0.87-0.90]) and blood pressure (odds ratio, for each 10-point increase, 0.92 [95% CI, 0.91-0.94]) in the LE8 component are significantly associated with a lower prevalence of CKD. The inversed association of LE8 score and CKD was significantly stronger among middle-aged, male, and coupled participants. CONCLUSIONS LE8 was negatively associated with the prevalence of CKD in a nonlinear fashion. Promoting adherence to optimal cardiovascular health levels may be beneficial to reduce the burden of CKD.

Abstract
Systemic inflammatory load affects the long-term developmental outcomes in patients with malignancy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the dynamic levels of platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) at different treatment stages on the prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) undergoing chemoradiotherapy. This study included 168 patients who received chemoradiotherapy between 2012 and 2018. PLR levels at different treatment stages were calculated based on blood test results. The association between PLR and overall survival (OS) was determined using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional regression models. The cutoff values of PLR before and after treatment of 168 patients with ESCC were 195.7 and 403.6, respectively. The 5-year OS rates of patients in the low and high pre-PLR groups were 42.1% and 21.7%, respectively. The overall 5-year OS rate of all patients was 27.1%. Multivariate analysis results showed that patient age (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.736; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.129-2.669; P = .012), alcohol consumption (HR = 1.622; 95%CI = 1.050-2.508; P = .029), T stage (HR = 12.483; 95%CI = 3.719-41.896; P < .001), pre-PLR (HR = 1.716; 95%CI = 1.069-2.756; P = .025), post-PLR (HR = 1.664; 95%CI = 1.106-2.503; P = .015) were independent factors of the prognosis of patients with ESCC. PLR at different treatment stages can be used to effectively evaluate the prognosis of patients with ESCC undergoing chemoradiotherapy.

Abstract
Background Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated inflammatory peripheral neuropathy. This study aimed to conduct a systematic analysis of the serum lipids profile in GBS. Methods We measured the serum lipids profile in 85 GBS patients and compared it with that of 85 healthy controls matched for age and sex. Additionally, we analyzed the correlation between lipids and the severity, subtypes, precursor infections, clinical outcomes, clinical symptoms, immunotherapy, and other laboratory markers of GBS. Results Compared to the healthy controls, GBS exhibited significantly elevated levels of Apolipoprotein B (APOB), Apolipoprotein C2 (APOC2), Apolipoprotein C3 (APOC3), Apolipoprotein E (APOE), triglycerides (TG), and residual cholesterol (RC). Conversely, Apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1), Apolipoprotein A2 (APOA2), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were substantially lower in GBS. Severe GBS displayed noticeably higher levels of APOC3 and total cholesterol (TC) compared to those with mild disease. Regarding different clinical outcomes, readmitted GBS demonstrated higher RC expression than those who were not readmitted. Moreover, GBS who tested positive for neuro-virus antibody IGG in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) exhibited heightened expression of APOC3 in comparison to those who tested negative. GBS with cranial nerve damage showed significantly reduced expression of HDL and APOA1 than those without such damage. Additionally, GBS experiencing limb pain demonstrated markedly decreased HDL expression. Patients showed a significant reduction in TC after intravenous immunoglobulin therapy. We observed a significant positive correlation between lipids and inflammatory markers, including TNF-α, IL-1β, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), white blood cells, monocytes, and neutrophils in GBS. Notably, APOA1 exhibited a negative correlation with ESR. Furthermore, our findings suggest a potential association between lipids and the immune status of GBS. Conclusion The research demonstrated a strong connection between lipids and the severity, subtypes, clinical outcomes, precursor infections, clinical symptoms, immunotherapy, inflammation, and immune status of GBS. This implies that a low-fat diet or the use of lipid-lowering medications may potentially serve as an approach for managing GBS, offering a fresh viewpoint for clinical treatment of this condition.

Abstract
Introduction Hypersalivation has been associated with Rolandic epilepsy and other childhood epilepsy syndromes. However, pure salivatory seizures are a rare type of focal seizure in which ictal hypersalivation is the dominant feature throughout the seizures. Case presentation We present a case of pure salivatory seizures originating from the right post-central operculum cortex, confirmed by the favorable surgical outcome. We attempt to analyze the symptom from behavioral and neural network perspectives and propose a possible mechanism to generate ictal hypersalivation and pure salivatory seizures. Conclusion Based on previous reports in the literature and our case, we emphasize the importance of the operculum in patients with ictal hypersalivation, particularly in patients with pure salivatory seizures.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:181901. Abstract
This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139 fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst) fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36} fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Abstract
AIM To develop and validate a radiomics nomogram for identifying high-risk carotid plaques on computed tomography (CT) angiography (CTA). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 280 patients with symptomatic (n=131) and asymptomatic (n=139) carotid plaques were divided into a training set (n=135), validation set (n=58), and external test set (n=87). Radiomic features were extracted from CTA images. A radiomics model was constructed based on selected features and a radiomics score (rad-score) was calculated. A clinical factor model was constructed by demographics and CT findings. A radiomics nomogram combining independent clinical factors and the rad-score was constructed. The diagnostic performance of three models was evaluated and validated by region of characteristic curves. RESULTS Calcification and maximum plaque thickness were the independent clinical factors. Twenty-four features were used to build the radiomics signature. In the validation set, the nomogram (area under the curve [AUC], 0.977; 95% CI, 0.899-0.999) performed better (p=0.017 and p=0.031) than the clinical factor model (AUC, 0.862; 95% CI, 0.746-0.938) and radiomics signature (AUC, 0.944; 95% CI, 0.850-0.987). In external test set, the nomogram (AUC, 0.952; 95% CI, 0.884-0.987) and radiomics signature (AUC, 0.932; 95% CI, 0.857-0.975) showed better discrimination capability (p=0.002 and p=0.037) than clinical factor model (AUC, 0.818; 95% CI, 0.721-0.892). CONCLUSION The CT-based nomogram showed satisfactory performance in identification of high-risk plaques in carotid arteries, and it may serve as a potential non-invasive tool to identify carotid plaque vulnerability and risk stratification.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study is to report an isolated pleural cryptococcosis with pleural effusion as the only manifestation, confirmed by pleural biopsy in a patient with thymoma combined with myasthenia gravis, who developed pleural effusion of unknown origin after long-term glucocorticoids and tacrolimus therapy. Methods Pathological examination of the right pleural biopsy tissue from a patient with unexplained recurrent pleural effusion was implemented. Morphological analysis of the fungal component and metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) on the pleural tissue were performed. Results A biopsy specimen of the right pleura revealed numerous yeast-like organisms surrounded by mucous capsules and Cryptococcus neoformans was detected by mNGS with a species-specific read number (SSRN) of 4, confirming the diagnosis of pleural cryptococcosis. Pleural effusion was eliminated with amphotericin B and fluconazole, and healthy status was maintained at the time of review 1 year later. Conclusion Cryptococcosis, manifested by simple pleural effusion, is extremely rare, but when repeated pleural effusion occurs in immunocompromised patients or in patients with malignant tumors, the possibility of cryptococcosis should be treated with high vigilance and pleural biopsy is recommended if necessary in order to confirm the diagnosis.

Han X, Zhang T, Ma Q, Chang R, Xin S, Yu Q, Zhang G, Wang Y. Gene expression profiles to analyze the anticancer and carcinogenic effects of arsenic in bladder cancer. Am J Transl Res 2023; 15:5984-5996. [PMID: 37969188 PMCID: PMC10641365] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/29/2023] [Accepted: 10/11/2023] [Indexed: 11/17/2023]
Abstract
OBJECTIVES Arsenic is one of the greatest hazards as an environmental carcinogen. At the same time it is also a promising anticancer agent, that can be used to treat acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) and some other tumors. Arsenic trioxide (ATO) exerts its therapeutic effect by promoting degradation of an oncogenic protein that drives the growth of APL cells. However, the molecular mechanisms that govern these paradoxical effects of arsenic in bladder cancer remain unclear. We speculate that they share the common mechanism that arsenic binds to the target proteins and subsequently impacts the expression of downstream genes. METHODS To address this issue, three Gene Set Enrichments (GSE) were loaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database with four expression matrices. Three of them were mice samples at exposure times of 1, 2, and 12 weeks, and the last was a human urothelial cell (HUC1) sample. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from 4 expression groups were identified at iDEP and analyzed at Metascape and Cytoscape for signaling pathway analysis and protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis. The web-portals UALCAN and GEPIA were used to analyze the role of DEGs in the crosstalk between carcinogenic and anticancer effects. The putative downstream genes of arsenic binding proteins were retrieved using the Cistrome Data Browser. Real-time PCR was used to validate the expression of DEGs. RESULTS The signaling pathways referred to lipid metabolism. Responses to various stimuli or hormones were overrepresented in 4 expression matrices. The PPI network emphasized the role of KRAS and TNF signaling in different groups. Furthermore, BDKRB2, FOS, NR4A1, PLAU, SH3BGRL, and F10 played an important role in the crosstalk between carcinogenic and anticancer effects in bladder cancer. Arsenic may impact the activity of ACTB, BACH1, NME2, RBBP4, PARP1, and PML by direct binding, and thus influence the expression of downstream genes such as PAX6, MLLT11, LTBP1, PCSK5, ZFP36, COL8A2, and IL1R2. CONCLUSION Arsenic exerted carcinogenic and anticancer functions by altering the expression of crosstalk genes such as BDKRB2, FOS, NR4A1, PLAU, SH3BGRL, and F10, and these were due to arsenic binding proteins.

Abstract
This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44 nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. The observed 95% confidence-level interval for a_{τ} is -0.057

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the effect of antibiotic prophylaxis(AP) in the prognosis of Post-neurosurgical meningitis(PNM) patients. METHODS A cohort analysis was performed using the clinical database in Beijing Tiantan Hospital and Capital Medical University. Data were collected on patients with the diagnosis of PNM (n = 3931) during 2012.01 to 2022.04. The microbial distribution, types of AP, and 42 and 90 days survival analysis of AP patients were evaluated using probable statistical methods. Independent risk factors for mortality were established by constructing a logistic regression analysis. RESULT A total of 1,190 patients were included in this study, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Staphylococcus aureus occupied the highest proportion. Of them, 929 cases received AP, cefuroxime and ceftriaxone are the most frequent used antibiotics. In addition, We found that PNM patients without AP significantly increased the 42 days and 90 days all-cause mortality rates. The use of different levels of AP did not improve patient outcomes, and ICU admission and assisted mechanical ventilation (AMV) were identified as independent mortality risk factors for PNM patient received AP. CONCLUSIONS AP plays an important role in the prognosis of PNM patients and has a significant function in improving prognosis. The prevention of PNM with antibiotics prior to neurosurgery should be emphasized in clinical practice, and appropriate selection of antibiotics is necessary to prevent the occurrence of infection and inhibit the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) During treatment, patients frequently undergo anatomical changes that might result in dose degradation. Adaptive radiation therapy (ART) is now available to overcome this problem. However, this method is time-consuming, and the lack of criteria to trigger replanning prevents its widespread use. To overcome these obstacles, anatomical presentation models are necessary. In this study, we developed a novel deep-learning method to make a series of predictions for the remaining treatment course. MATERIALS/METHODS Total 230 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients who received radiotherapy in 33 fractions were enrolled. The data included cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and planning CT images. CBCT image quality was improved to CT level using an in-house software. A generative adversarial network-long short-term memory network model was proposed, with the generation abilities of the former network and forecasting abilities of the latter. To predict the anatomical presentation for 3-6 weeks, we trained four models. The planning CT and CBCT acquired earlier were used as the input. Physicians segmented the gross target volume (GTVnx) and parotid glands on prediction and real CBCT (ground truth). Contours, dosimetry parameters, and plan adaptation decision were used to evaluate the models. RESULTS The table shows the overall performance of the test set (18 cases). The anatomical changes were predicted over the treatment course with a dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.96, 0.90 and 0.92 and mean distance to agreement (MDA, in mm) of 0.37, 0.70, and 0.60 for GTVnx, left parotid, and right parotid, respectively. Bland-Altman analysis revealed that dosimetry parameters did not show significant difference between prediction and ground truth. The prescription coverage (%) of GTVnx, V30 of the left parotid, and V30 of the right parotid had mean absolute biases of 0.09, 1.09, and 0.27, respectively. At week 6, there were two cases that required plan adaptation, and the model effectively triggered replanning one week in advance. CONCLUSION We developed a framework that predicts the anatomical changes occurring in future fractions. Establishing such a framework provides a proactive approach to ART and saves clinical time by anticipating and preparing for treatment strategies in advance.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Current deep learning-based dose prediction methods can only predict a specific dose distribution. If the predicted dose is inaccurate, no more options can be selected. We proposed a novel dose prediction method named dose band prediction, which outcomes a spectrum of predicted dose distribution for planning and quality assurance (QA). MATERIALS/METHODS Upper-Band and Lower-Band losses were involved in 3D convolution neural networks to establish the Upper-Band Network (UBN) and Lower-Band Network (LBN). Each voxel's ideal dose spectrum (dose band) was defined by the maximum/minimum rational dose predicted by UBN/LBN. 130 NPC cases with Tomotherapy (dataset 1), 49 cervix cases with IMRT (dataset 2) and 43 cervix cases with VMAT (dataset 3) were enrolled to establish and evaluate our dose band prediction method. RESULTS The dose band prediction method can successfully predict a spectrum of doses. Upper-Band/Lower-Band presents maximum/minimum rational dose; Middle-Line presents the average of Upper-Band and Lower-Band. The clinical implement dose was used as the reference dose. We evaluated the maximum interval between the reference and Upper-Band/Middle-Line/Lower-Band doses, and the percentage dose difference was used as the evaluation method. The differences in PTV for Upper-Band, Middle-Line and Lower-Band in dataset 1 were within 2.47%, 0.54%, and 2.8%; in dataset 2, they were within 0.37%, 1.15%, and 2.69%; in dataset 3, they were within 0.96%, 0.35%, and 1.66%. The mean difference of OARs for the Upper-Band, Middle-Line and Lower-Band in dataset 1 were within 8.13%, 4.97%, and 8.19%; in dataset 2, they were within 8.8%, 4.48%, and 5.52%; in dataset 3, they were within 4.01%, 3.13%, and 5.79% (shown in Table 1). CONCLUSION Dose Band prediction achieved high-accuracy dose prediction by the Middle-Line. More importantly, the Upper-Band/Lower-Band provided a spectrum of possible rational doses. Our Dose Band prediction method is based on a specific loss function, so it can easily be applied in various network and patient cases. Dose Band prediction towards a more robust plan QA and planning assistance. Table 1. The maximum interval of doses (percentage dose difference, %).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to differentiate temporal-plus epilepsy (TPE) from temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) using extraction of radiomics features from three-dimensional magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition gradient echo (3D-MPRAGE) imaging data. METHODS Data from patients with TLE or TPE who underwent epilepsy surgery between January 2019 and January 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Thirty-three regions of interest in the affected hemisphere of each patient were defined on 3D-MPRAGE images. A total of 3531 image features were extracted from each patient. Four feature selection methods and 10 machine learning algorithms were used to build 40 differentiation models. Model performance was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic analysis. RESULTS Eighty-two patients were included for analysis, 47 with TLE and 35 with TPE. The model combining logistic regression and the relief selection method had the best performance (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, .779; accuracy, .875; sensitivity, .800; specificity, .929; positive predictive value, .889; negative predictive value, .867). SIGNIFICANCE Radiomics analysis can differentiate TPE from TLE. The logistic regression classifier trained with radiomics features extracted from 3D-MPRAGE images had the highest accuracy and best performance.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) The optimization of energy layer distributions is crucial for efficient proton ARC therapy: on one hand, a sufficient number of energy layers is needed to ensure the plan quality; on the other hand, an excess number of energy jumps can substantially slow down the treatment delivery. This work will develop a new treatment plan optimization method with direct minimization of number of energy jumps (NEJ), which will be shown to outperform state-of-the-art methods in both plan quality and delivery efficiency. MATERIALS/METHODS The proposed method jointly optimizes the plan quality and minimizes the NEJ. To minimize NEJ, (1) the proton spots x is summed per energy layer to form the energy vector y; (2) y is binarized via sigmoid transform into y1; (3) y1 is multiplied with a predefined energy order vector via dot product into y2; (4) y2 is filtered through the finite-differencing kernel into y3 in order to identify NEJ; (5) only the NEJ of y3 is penalized, while x is optimized for plan quality. The solution algorithm to this new method is based on iterative convex relaxation. RESULTS The new method is validated in comparison with state-of-the-art methods called energy sequencing (ES) method and energy matrix (EM) method. In terms of delivery efficiency, the new method had fewer NEJ, less energy switching time, and generally less total delivery time. In terms of plan quality, the new method had smaller optimization objective values, lower normal tissue dose, and generally better target coverage. A head-and-neck case is provided in the table with the following dosimetric parameters: planning objective value F; conformity index CI; homogeneity index HI; mean dose of larynx DOAR; mean body dose Dbody; the unit of dose is Gy. CONCLUSION We have developed a new treatment plan optimization method with direct minimization of NEJ, and demonstrated that this new method outperformed state-of-the-art methods (ES and EM) in both plan quality and delivery efficiency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to identify and evaluate the short-term and lag effects of environmental factors on asthma hospitalizations in different regions. STUDY DESIGN The ecological study on asthma is performed in three regions of Guangxi, China, that are distinctly different in geography and climate. METHODS We used distributed lag non-linear models to investigate the exposure-response-lag relationship between meteorological factors, air pollutants, and asthma hospital admissions across the three regions during 2015 (January 1 to December 31). RESULTS Cold was an important meteorological factor affecting asthma. At lag 0, the relative risk (RR; 23°C as reference) of cold in the Northwest, Northeast, and South was 1.10 (10°C), 1.14 (8°C), and 1.30 (11°C), respectively. NO2 was identified as the most important air pollutant affecting asthma. The RR of asthma hospitalization increased by 10.9% (at lag 4), 8.1% (at lag 0), and 4.2% (at lag 2) for every 10 μg/m3 increase in NO2 concentration in the Northwest, Northeast, and South, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In the three regions of Guangxi, there were differences in the dominant factors affecting asthma hospitalizations. Differences in geography can inform governments as to how to prepare the healthcare system to meet the expected peaks.
