Abstract
The presence of African swine fever (ASF) in the Caucasus region and Russian Federation has increased concerns that wild boars may introduce the ASF virus into the European Union (EU). This study describes a semi-quantitative approach for evaluating the risk of ASF introduction into the EU by wild boar movements based on the following risk estimators: the susceptible population of (1) wild boars and (2) domestic pigs in the country of origin; the outbreak density in (3) wild boars and (4) domestic pigs in the countries of origin, the (5) suitable habitat for wild boars along the EU border; and the distance between the EU border and the nearest ASF outbreak in (6) wild boars or (7) domestic pigs. Sensitivity analysis was performed to identify the most influential risk estimators. The highest risk was found to be concentrated in Finland, Romania, Latvia and Poland, and wild boar habitat and outbreak density were the two most important risk estimators. Animal health authorities in at-risk countries should be aware of these risk estimators and should communicate closely with wild boar hunters and pig farmers to rapidly detect and control ASF.

Abstract
Antioxidant capacity, quality, and anthocyanin and nutrient contents of 106 peach cultivars from different breeding programs were evaluated at the Estació Experimental de Lleida, IRTA (Catalonia, Spain), during two growing seasons (2010 and 2011). High variability was found among cultivars within each quality trait, where different cultivars were scored as the best and the worst. For example, a 5-fold range (2.17-12.07 g of malic acid L⁻¹), 6-fold range (144.20-711.73 μg of Trolox g⁻¹ of FW), and 11-fold range (0.70-11.43 mg of cyanidin-3-glucoside kg⁻¹ of FW) were observed in titratable acidity, relative antioxidant capacity, and anthocyanin content, respectively. The breeding program within each fruit type (melting peach, nectarine, and flat peach) and qualitative pomological traits also had significant effects on the quality. Nevertheless, each breeding program had specific characteristics that distinguished it from the others. Even so, within each breeding program, there is high variability among cultivars. Therefore, growers should not base their strategy exclusively on the choice of breeding program. Principal component analysis for each fruit type (melting peach, nectarine, nonmelting peach, and flat peach) allowed a selection of a set of cultivars from different breeding programs with the highest quality performance. For example, cultivars such as 'Azurite', 'IFF 1230', 'Amiga', 'Fire Top', 'African Bonnigold', 'Ferlot', 'Mesembrine', and 'Platifirst' had higher sweetness and flavor compared to the others. Therefore, this study could help breeders to make decisions for the selection of new cultivars able to improve the quality features of fruit intake, technicians to know better quality performance of peach cultivars, and consumers to meet their expectations for fruit with high health benefits and a specific taste.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies have highlighted the need for improved methods of monitoring glucose control in intensive care to reduce hyperglycaemia, without increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia. Continuous glucose monitoring is increasingly used in children with diabetes, but there are little data regarding its use in the preterm infant, particularly at extremes of glucose levels and over prolonged periods. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of the continuous glucose monitoring sensor (CGMS) across the glucose profile, and to determine whether there was any deterioration over a 7 day period. DESIGN Prospectively collected CGMS data from the NIRTURE Trial was compared with the data obtained simultaneously using point of care glucose monitors. SETTING An international multicentre randomised controlled trial. PATIENTS One hundred and eighty-eight very low birth weight control infants. OUTCOME MEASURES Optimal accuracy, performance goals (American Diabetes Association consensus), Bland Altman, Error Grid analyses and accuracy. RESULTS The mean (SD) duration of CGMS recordings was 156.18 (29) h (6.5 days), with a total of 5207 paired glucose levels. CGMS data correlated well with point of care devices (r=0.94), with minimal bias. It met the Clarke Error Grid and Consensus Grid criteria for clinical significance. Accuracy of single readings to detect set thresholds of hypoglycaemia, or hyperglycaemia was poor. There was no deterioration over time from insertion. CONCLUSIONS CGMS can provide information on trends in glucose control, and guidance on the need for blood glucose assessment. This highlights the potential use of CGMS in optimising glucose control in preterm infants.

Abstract
PhaSeal is a closed-system drug transfer device which has demonstrated to protect against occupational exposure to antineoplastic agents. Our aim was to assess the impact of the incorporation of PhaSeal on the processing time of chemotherapy. The study was a prospective simulation study which compared the processing times with the traditional open-system technique and using the closed-transfer system. Four experienced pharmacy technicians prepared six batches with each method simulating simple chemotherapy admixture operations. We compared the mean times obtained by student's t test and evaluated the "learning effect" between days by ANOVA. The average percentage of time saving with PhaSeal was 31.7% (time per batch [mean +/- SD] 6.44+0.73 vs. 9.44+0.98 minutes). Mean difference was statistically significant (3.0 min IC95% 2.50-3.50; p>0.0001). No significant learning curve effect was detected. The BD Medical/Carmel Pharma PhaSeal system, in addition to its protective properties, is able to save time in the elaboration process which leads to organization advantages for hospital pharmacy services.

Abstract
Nanoparticles based on disulfide bond reduced bovine serum albumin and thiolated alginate (alginate-cysteine conjugate) have been prepared by coacervation method and have been loaded with tamoxifen (TMX). The TMX load into the nanoparticles was optimized (4-6 μg/mg NP) by freeze-drying the systems before the loading procedure. Maximum TMX release (45-52%) took place between 2 and 25 h. Cytotoxicity of unloaded nanoparticles in MCF-7 and HeLa cells was not observed, although a small decrease in viability took place at very high concentration. Cell uptake of nanoparticles occurred in both cell types and the presence of polysaccharide in the nanoparticle composition allowed a better interaction with cells. The administration of 10 μM TMX by TMX-nanoparticles was effective in both cellular lines, and the effect of the drug-loaded systems on MCF-7 cell cycle showed the efficacy of the TMX-loaded nanoparticles.

Abstract
Paclitaxel (PTX), an antimicrotubular agent used in the treatment of ovarian and breast cancer, was encapsulated in nanoparticles (NPs) of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) polymers using the spray-drying technique. Morphology, size distribution, drug encapsulation efficiency, thermal degradation and drug release were characterized. MCF7 cells were employed to evaluate the efficacy of the systems on cell cycle and cytotoxicity. The particle size was in the range 0.8-1 µm. The incorporation efficiency of PTX was more than 80% in all NPs obtained. In vitro drug release took place during 35 days, and drug release rates were in the order PCL > PLGA 50:50 > PLGA 75:25. Unloaded NPs showed to be cytocompatible at MCF7 cells. PTX-loaded NPs demonstrated the release of the drug block cells in the G2/M phase. All PTX-loaded formulations showed their efficacy in killing MCF7 cells, mainly PTX-loaded PLGA 50:50 and PLGA 75:25 that cause a decrease in cell viability lower than 20%.

Abstract
Release of antibiotics into the environment through the agricultural reuse of animal manure is considered a cause of chronic environmental exposure that often leads to adverse ecotoxicological effects, as well as to the introduction of antibiotic-resistant bacteria into the environment. The vulnerability of soil to antibiotic contamination plays a major role in determining the extent of the contamination and the likelihood of the emergence of antibiotic resistance and the appearance of ecotoxicological effects. It depends on soil characteristics, which vary across Europe, and antibiotic characteristics, which vary across drug classes. Understanding how soil vulnerability varies geographically for different veterinary medicinal products would be very useful for resource allocation among surveillance programmes. This paper performs risk analysis of the EU region for 12 antimicrobials using a spatial assessment performed in four steps. First, antibiotic release was estimated based on livestock density. Then exposure was estimated based on antimicrobial soil contamination. Third, consequences were modelled based on soil uses. Finally, risk was estimated by combining release, exposure and consequences using spatial multicriteria decision analysis. A final risk value for soil vulnerability was calculated for each antibiotic studied and displayed in chloropletic maps (ArcGIS 9.3). Furthermore, the Getis-Ord Gi statistic was used to identify clusters of areas at high risk for antibiotic soil contamination. Enrofloxacin was the highest-risk antibiotic in the European Union, followed by tetracyclines, tylosin and sulfodiazine. The highest risk values were found in Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany and the UK. The results suggest that this methodology can be used successfully for evaluating the contamination potential of antibiotics over large areas with limited input data. This work is a preliminary step towards prioritising the use of veterinary medicinal products (VMPs), orientating monitoring studies and antimicrobial surveillance programmes, and informing sustainable decision-making for interventions designed to mitigate the risk of VMPs.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to identify environmental characteristics of European Ramsar wetlands, which are natural habitats for waterbirds, that could have contributed as risk factors for H5N1 HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza) in water birds (2006-2009). Ramsar wetlands in which H5N1 outbreaks were reported were considered infected (positive), and a case-control study was conducted using a logistic regression model in order to identify environmental risk factors associated with disease. Forestry (odds ratio, OR = 6.90) and important area for water birds with mixosaline water (OR = 6.31), as well as distance to the nearest positive wetland (OR = 0.66), which was included into the model to adjust for spatial dependence, were associated with status of the wetlands. The model was used to estimate the risk for H5N1 HPAI on each European Ramsar wetland. Results will help to identify wetlands at high risk for H5N1 HPAI infection, wetlands that could be selectively targeted as part of a surveillance program aimed at early detection and prevention of future H5N1 HPAI epidemics.

Abstract
In October 2009, highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) was isolated for the first time in poultry in Spain. Sequencing analysis revealed that it was an H7N7 HPAIV. The progenitors of H7 HPAIV strains involved in recent European poultry outbreaks were simultaneously circulating in wild birds. The infected Spanish farm is located close to a reservoir abundant in wild birds. Epidemiological investigation found no links to other poultry holdings and those located in the control area were negative for AIV. Previous spatial risk analyses had identified the area where the infected holding is located to beat high relative risk for the introduction and presence of H5N1 HPAIV by wild birds. We suggest a risk-based surveillance scheme that targets smaller geographical units but maintains the number of wild birds being sampled, as early detection of potentially pathogenic AIV is crucial in preventing spread to poultry.

Abstract
PURPOSE After studying 3 clinical cases, we have reviewed the clinical and radiological characteristics of meningocele, meningioma and optic nerve glioma. The differential diagnosis and therapeutic management are also discussed. METHODS Review of three clinical reports of three patients seen in our unit and a bibliographic search concerning the diagnosis and therapeutic management of these three entities at the present time. RESULTS Differential diagnosis has to be based on a wide range of parameters: epidemiologic (age, race, sex, prevalence of the tumors), clinical (visual acuity, perimetry, Hertel exophthalmometry and funduscopy) and radiologic (computed tomography and magnetic resonance). Anatomopathologic study is required only rarely. The therapeutic options are: observation, surgery and radiotherapy. CONCLUSION A correct differential diagnosis is mandatory to be able to individualize the treatment for each entity (Arch Soc Esp Oftalmol 2009; 84: 563-568).

Abstract
UNLABELLED The etiology of preterm birth is difficult to classify. It is usually divided into three clinical types according to its clinical presentation: medically indicated; caused by ruptured membranes; and spontaneous or idiopathic. However, this classification is controversial, imprecise and can result in multiple interpretations when applied. OBJECTIVE To design an etiologically based classification of preterm birth, and to design a system to easily assign each case during the perinatal period. METHODS Review of literature, qualitative analysis using consensus methods through nominal group technique, and quantitative analysis of a pilot study using a first version of the algorithm. RESULTS A classification is made to establish a general division between the "primary cause" and "associated causes" of preterm birth, that allows remote causes or risk factors to be included. The primary cause includes seven categories: inflammatory (ruptured membranes and related); vascular (intrauterine growth restriction and related); maternal-local; maternal-systemic; fetal pathology; fetal distress; idiopathic. The medically indicated preterm birth is defined as a previous or independent category and so is compatible with the other, previously mentioned causes . An algorithm was designed to make it easier to classify the primary cause of preterm birth using a flowchart. CONCLUSIONS A pragmatic classification of preterm birth is proposed that may help to achieve better precision and agreement between clinicians.

Abstract
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype H5N1 continues to circulate across Eurasia and Africa since its unprecedented rapid spread in 2005. Diffusion by wild bird movements has been evidenced in the European Union in 2006 and 2007. Spain is an important wintering quarter for aquatic birds from northern latitudes, so identifying the critical areas and species where an outbreak is prone to happen is necessary. This work presents an assessment of the risk of introduction of H5N1 HPAI in Spain by aquatic wild birds estimating a relative risk value per province. For this purpose, an assessment of the release and exposure to the risk of infection with H5N1 HPAI of 25 selected water bird species has been carried out. Parameters considered in the assessment include H5N1 HPAI notifications from 2006 to 2008 and factors that favour the occurrence or persistence of H5N1 HPAI (wetlands' surface, low temperatures), together with aquatic wild birds' movements parameters (departure, destination, stop-overs, abundance) and parameters relative to the susceptible population in Spain: poultry density and wild aquatic abundance. Results show the relative risk for each Spanish province of experiencing H5N1 HPAI introduced by wild aquatic birds helping to identify higher risk areas.

Abstract
CLINICAL CASES A 94-year-old woman, who had had a chalazion for a period of 8 months, presented because of thickening of the eyelid with necrosis, madarosis and adenopathy. A 67-year-old woman, previously operated on for a sebaceous carcinoma, presented because of reddening of the conjunctiva and eyelid. Clinical evaluation revealed inflammation of the eyelid and an irregular and erythematous superior bulbar conjunctiva with disruption of the limbal architecture. DISCUSSION A sebaceous carcinoma is a tumour which is difficult to diagnose and treat, because it can be patchy and has a tendency to pagetoid dissemination. Diagnosis requires a biopsy of the lesion and mapping of biopsies from the conjunctiva of the eyelid and eyebrow. The subsequent treatment depends on the extent of the tumour, and may involve simple cleavage, topical mitomycin C, radiotherapy or exenteration of the eyebrow.

Abstract
Assessing islet cellular composition and beta cell viability using Flow Cytometry (FC) and Laser Scanning Cytometry (LSC) may aid in determining the transplant quality of islets. Human islets (2500 IEQ, n = 44, purity >or=80%) dissociated into a single cell suspension were stained with ductal marker CA19, with Newport Green (NG) and FluoZin3 (FL3) for beta-cell identification, with TMRE to assess mitochondrial membrane potential, with DAPI to identify live vs. dead cells, and with Annexin-V/DAPI to differentiate apoptotic and necrotic cells. For LSC, cell preparations (n = 9) were stained for insulin (beta-cells), glucagon (alpha-cells), somatostatin (delta cells), and pancreatic polypeptide (ppp cells). Fluorescence microscopy (EtBr/FDA) and insulin response were also measured. DAPI- staining was 73.78% +/- 1.37, while EtBr/FDA was 96% +/- 0.48. 52.5% +/- 3.73 of all cells were NG+, of which 58.08% +/- 2.61 were NG+/TMRE+. Annexin-V/DAPI staining (n = 26) showed 13.8% +/- 0.89 apoptotic, 27.2% +/- 2.0 necrotic, and 51.9% +/- 2.22 live cells. 26.0% +/- 5.19 of cells were CA19 positive (n = 17), of which 45.5% +/- 4.37 were also TMRE+, and 5.2% +/- 1.2 of the TMRE+ were also NG+/CA19+. NG and FL3 showed similar staining (n = 8). Comparison of short-term (<or=2 days) versus long-term (>or=3 days) culture showed similar TMRE+/NG+ averages, albeit lower percentages of live (36.4% vs 51.9%), and higher percentages of apoptotic (19.2% vs 13.8%) and necrotic cells (37.4% vs 27.2%) for long-term, as determined by Annexin-V staining. LSC resulted in 54.17% +/- 4.62 beta-cells, 33.33% +/- 4.16 alpha-cells, 8.75% +/- 2.5 delta-cells, and 3.75% +/- 0.79 ppp cells. There is no significant difference between insulin positive cells and NG positive cells (P <or= .55). FC and LSC provide valuable information about islet quality, which could potentially be used for evaluating islets prior to transplantation.

Abstract
Notifiable avian influenza (NAI) had never been reported in Spain, until July 2006 when a dead Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) was found positive to the highly pathogenic H5N1 subtype as part of the active wild bird surveillance plan. The current program of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA)'s strategic preventive plan against NAI is divided in the following parts: identification of risk areas and risk wild bird species, increased biosecurity measures, early detection of infection with surveillance intensification and development of rapid diagnostic tests, and other policies, which include continuing education and training to ensure early detection of the disease. In 2003 an active surveillance plan was introduced for domestic fowl; the plan was extended to wild birds in 2004. A total of 18,780 samples in poultry and 3687 samples in wild birds had been analyzed through December 2005 to detect the presence and spread of avian influenza subtypes H5 and H7. In the present work we suggest some contributions to be implemented in MAPA's action plan: 1) the identification of risks because of migratory birds, within the risk assessment of the introduction of NAI virus in Spain and 2) an interactive digital simulator of the disease developed for continuing education and training.

Abstract
Since oxidative stress is implicated in the pathophysiology of dementia and depression, this study was designed to investigate the pro-oxidant activity of rotenone, the protective role of standardized extract of Hypericum perforatum (SHP), as well as the mRNA levels of antioxidant enzymes, in brain homogenates of rats following exposure to rotenone and SHP extract. Quercetin in liposomes, one active constituent, was tested in the same experimental conditions to serve as a positive control. The animals received pretreatment with SHP (4 mg/kg) or quercetin liposomes (25 and 100 mg/kg) 60 min before of rotenone injection (2 mg/kg). All treatments were given intraperitoneally in a volume of 0.5 ml/kg body weight, for 45 days. Rotenone treatment increased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). The content of reduced glutathione (GSH) was decreased due to chronic rotenone treatment. Rotenone significantly induced the gene expression of CuZnSOD, MnSOD; CAT and GPx in brain. In contrast, SHP extract exerted an antioxidant action which was related with a decreased of MnSOD activity and mRNA levels of some antioxidant enzymes evaluated. Liposomal quercetin treatment resulted in a significant preservation of the activities of antioxidant enzymes and a decreased in the mRNA levels of these antioxidant enzymes. One possible mechanism of action of SHP extract may be related to quercetin in protecting neurons from oxidative damage. Therefore standardized extract of H. perforatum could be a better alternative for depressed elderly patients with degenerative disorder exhibiting elevated oxidative stress status.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Platanus hispanica trees are considered an important source of airborne pollen allergens in many cities of Western Europe. As the prevalence of sensitization to this species is 8% to 9% in northwestern Spain, our objective was to propose models predicting both the onset of the pollen season and the mean daily pollen concentrations. METHODS Airborne P. hispanica pollen was monitored from 1993 through 2002 with 2 Hirst volumetric spore traps in Ourense and Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. The pollination start dates were determined and the data were fitted to predictive regression models, which were tested for the year 2002. RESULTS P. hispanica pollen is present in the atmosphere from March to April. The main pollination period is short with a mean duration of around 40 days. The mean maximum daily concentrations exceeded 100 pollen grains/m(3). As temperature is the parameter that most influences atmospheric pollen levels, this variable was chosen as the basis for models predicting both the onset of the pollen season and daily pollen concentrations. The predicted onset date was a few days later than the real start date in 2002. However, the model gave an accurate prediction of the mean daily pollen concentration. CONCLUSIONS The mean daily concentrations of P. hispanica pollen are high, and given the allergenic potential of this species, it should be taken into account as one of the most important local spring allergens. The weather-related models proposed help us to predict P. hispanica pollen concentrations in the atmosphere.

Abstract
Caffeine is the most widely consumed substance in the world which antagonizes adenosine effects. Adenosine acting through A(1) receptors inhibits glutamate release which binds to metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs). Recently, we have shown that maternal caffeine intake during gestation causes down-regulation of A(1) and metabotropic glutamate receptors in the brain of both rat mothers and fetuses. In the present work we provide evidence that caffeine also affects receptors in hearts, causing a decrease in mGluRs from both maternal and fetal hearts. A decrease in G(q/11) and PLC beta(1) proteins level was also observed in both tissues. However, phospholipase C activity was only affected in fetal heart, being significantly decreased. These results suggest an in vivo cross-talk mechanism between adenosine and glutamate receptors in peripheral tissues. Therefore, special attention should be paid to caffeine ingestion during gestation.

Abstract
Pregnant rats were treated throughout the gestational period with either caffeine or theophylline, and its effect on the metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluRs) signal transduction pathway was studied in both maternal and fetal brain. In maternal brain, radioligand binding assays showed that chronic treatment with methylxanthines caused a significant decrease in the total number of mGluRs. This decrease was accompanied by an increase in receptor affinity. Immunodetection showed that mGluR1a and phospholipase C beta1 (PLCbeta1) were significantly decreased in response to chronic methylxanthine treatment, whereas alphaG(q/11) was not affected. A loss was also detected of PLC stimulation mediated by (S)-3,5-dihydroxyphenylglycine (DHPG), a selective Group I mGluR agonist, suggesting desensitization of the mGluR/PLC pathway. In fetal brain, a loss in total mGluRs was observed in fetuses from mothers treated with caffeine or theophylline, without variation in receptor affinity. A decrease in mGluR1a, alphaG(q/11) and PLCbeta1 levels was also observed in response to treatment. However, changes detected in this immature tissue were not associated with variations in PLC activity. These results suggest that chronic caffeine or theophylline treatment down-regulates several mGluR/PLC transduction pathway components in both maternal and fetal brain, causing a loss of receptor responsiveness only in maternal brain.

Abstract
An increasing percentage of the European population suffers from allergies to pollen. The study of the evolution of air pollen concentration supplies prior knowledge of the levels of pollen in the air, which can be useful for the prevention and treatment of allergic symptoms, and the management of medical resources. The symptoms of Betula pollinosis can be associated with certain levels of pollen in the air. The aim of this study was to predict the risk of the concentration of pollen exceeding a given level, using previous pollen and meteorological information, by applying neural network techniques. Neural networks are a widespread statistical tool useful for the study of problems associated with complex or poorly understood phenomena. The binary response variable associated with each level requires a careful selection of the neural network and the error function associated with the learning algorithm used during the training phase. The performance of the neural network with the validation set showed that the risk of the pollen level exceeding a certain threshold can be successfully forecasted using artificial neural networks. This prediction tool may be implemented to create an automatic system that forecasts the risk of suffering allergic symptoms.

Abstract
Chronic glutamate treatment during gestational period caused a significant decrease in total metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) number. Similar results were observed on the steady-state level of mGlu(1) receptor detected by immunoblotting assays, suggesting that this is the main receptor subtype modulated by agonist exposure. Furthermore, no variations on mRNA coding mGlu(1) receptor were found, suggesting post-transcriptional modulation as a possible mechanism of the lost of receptor detected at the membrane surface. On the other hand, western-blotting to determine level of G(q/11) protein and phospholipase C beta(1) revealed a significant decrease of both proteins in mothers brain. This decrease was associated with significant variation in glutamate and DHPG-stimulated phospholipase C activity. No significant differences on mGluR transduction pathway components were observed in fetuses brain. These results suggest that glutamate intake during pregnancy causes a down-regulation of different proteins involved in glutamate response mediated by mGluR only in mothers brain without significantly affecting fetuses brain.

Abstract
UNLABELLED A retrospective study was performed to describe the features of the pollinosis caused by Betula in the area of Ourense, Spain. The pollen count was carried out with a Lanzoni volumetric Hirts spore trap (1993-2000). The Betula pollen represented 5% over the annual total (annual mean quantity: 965 grains). It was present in the air from March to mid-May. The highest peaks took place in April (maximum values mean: 131 grains/m3). The medical records of 222 patients (mean age 25.66 years) diagnosed with pollinosis (1998-2000), who lived at less than 30 km. from the spore trap, were reviewed. In all of them, the skin-prick test (SPT) was carried out with pollen allergens. The percentages of positive SPT were: Lolium perenne, 91.89% (16.6% monosensitized); Plantago lanceolata, 71.17% (1.26% monosensitized); Betula alba, 41.89% (10.75% monosensitized); Platanus hybrida, 34.95%; Olea europea, 10.36%; and Parietaria judaica, 6.3%. The mean age of Betula monosensitized patients was 44.7 years. The majority of them had symptoms in March-April, 40% had asthma symptoms, 80% had lived in Central Europe, and 30% of them presented an oral allergy syndrome to fruits. There were 41.93% of the patients with positive SPT to Betula pollen who had asthma symptoms, in comparison with 23.25% of the patients with negative SPT to Betula (p = 0.0034). There were 20.28% of the patients with positive SPT to Betula pollen, who had lived in Central Europe, in comparison with 4.27% of the patients with negative SPT to Betula, p: 0.00049. The relative risk of sensitization was 2.05. CONCLUSIONS Betula pollen was the second cause of clinical pollinosis in our patients, after grass, being responsible of the symptoms in the early spring, in a small number of the patients in their forties. The presence of asthma was higher in Betula sensitized patients, and the residence in Central Europe was a sensitization risk factor.

Abstract
Lepidium peruvianum root has been traditionally utilized by native Peruvians, since before the time of the Incas, for both nutritional and putative medicinal purposes as an adaptogen and also to enhance fertility in humans and animals. The present research was conducted to evaluate the anti-stress activity of the methanolic extract of Lepidium peruvianum. The drug is capable of attenuating or even eliminating variations in homeostasis produced by stress since it reduces or abolishes stress-induced ulcers, elevated corticosterone levels, the reduction of glucose and the increase in the weight of adrenal glands produced by stress. It also eliminates the decrease in free fatty-acids (FFA) in plasma produced by stress and we obtain a positive result in the forced-swimming test. Thus, it did not appear to affect restraint stress-induced immunosuppression.

Abstract
This study evaluates whether quercetin (25, 50 and 75 mg/kg body weight) treatment has a protective effect on the pro-oxidant-antioxidant state following chronic ethanol treatment in mice. Pretreatment (quercetin 25, 50 and 75 mg/kg body weight for 15 d+co-treatment of ethanol 18%+quercetin for 15 d and ethanol 18% for the 15 d) increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione (GSH) in comparison to the ethanol group. No significant differences from the ethanol group were observed in the group after post-treatment (ethanol 18% for 30 d+quercetin 25, 50 and 75 mg/kg body weight for 15 d) with quercetin. A significant increase in lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde, MDA) products was observed in liver tissue after administration of ethanol, which was attenuated by pre- and post-treatment with a high dose of quercetin. GSH levels increased and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels decreased in groups of ethanol-exposed mice that received quercetin for 15 d prior to ethanol exposure. In conclusion, pre-treatment of quercetin may protect against ethanol-induced oxidative stress by directly quenching lipid peroxides and indirectly by enhancing the production of the endogenous antioxidant GSH. There was no protective effect on post-treatment with quercetin.

Abstract
The subject of this study is the application to the construction of soft mud bricks (also known as pressed bricks), both green and heat-treated bodies, built from raw materials from Santa Cruz de Mudela, Ciudad Real, and IGCC slag from the power central of Puertollano (Ciudad Real, Spain). For this purpose, industrial level tests have been performed: the production of these kind of bricks from mixes of waste from ores of construction clays and to significant fraction of different ratios and clay granulometries mixed with IGCC slag. The results of this experimentation suggests that not only can IGCC slag be applied to a ceramic process, but also its use gives several advantages, as water and energy savings, as well as improvements on the final properties of products.

Abstract
The aim of this paper was to study the influence of Fraxetin (7,8-dihydroxy-6-methoxv coumarin) treatment in a Drosophila melanogaster experimental model, analyzing several parameters in normal situations and instances of induced oxidative stress. Fraxetin treatment was introduced at different ages. Antigravity capacity and survival parameters were evaluated as in vivo assays, and levels of oxidative status, glutathione and lipid peroxidation, as ex vivo assays. The stress situation was induced by negative geotaxis, so physical exercise enhanced its basal metabolism, generating free radicals, which are probably implicated in the molecular damage related to the aging process. In our study, all treatment groups demonstrated a beneficial effect on the evaluated parameters. So, in vivo Fraxetin protects fruit flies against oxidative stress and improves the survival parameters. Moreover, Fraxetin prevents oxidative stress by an important increase in antioxidant reserves of GSH, and peroxidative damage is preserved by Fraxetin treatments.

Abstract
We have developed a prototype apparatus for real-time closed-loop measurement and correction of aberrations in the human eye. The apparatus uses infrared light to measure the wave-front aberration at 25 Hz with a Hartmann-Shack sensor. Defocus is removed by a motorized optometer, and higher-order aberrations are corrected by a membrane deformable mirror. The device was first tested with an artificial eye. Correction of static aberrations takes approximately five iterations, making the system capable of following aberration changes at 5 Hz. This capability allows one to track most of the aberration dynamics in the eye. Results in living eyes showed effective closed-loop correction of aberrations, with a residual uncorrected wave front of 0.1microm for a 4.3-mm pupil diameter. Retinal images of a point source in different subjects with and without adaptive correction of aberrations were estimated in real time. The results demonstrate real-time closed-loop correction of aberration in the living eye. An application of this device is as electro-optic "spectacles" to improve vision.

Abstract
We performed the Irwin test on some different extracts of the aerial parts of Tridax procumbens L., of the leaves of Neurolaena lobata (L.) R. Br., of the bark and leaves of Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth. and Gliricidia sepium Jacq. Walp. and of the root and leaves of Petiveria alliacea L. At a dosage of 1.25 g extract/100 g dried plant, the aqueous extracts of bark and leaves of Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth. and G. sepium Jacq. Walp. showed higher activity: decrease in motor activity, back tonus, reversible parpebral ptosis. catalepsy and strong hypothermia.

Abstract
Although there has been much debate about the causes of neurologic complications associated with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), there is good evidence linking such complications with some of the pathophysiologic changes associated with use of conventional cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Several studies indicate that it is possible to significantly lower risk of stroke and other central nervous system (CNS) morbidity in patients undergoing CPB for CABG by application of selected techniques and equipment modifications. The resurgence of interest in coronary revascularization by using beating heart surgery (BHS) offers a unique opportunity to evaluate neurologic outcome independent of CPB. Currently, BHS would appear to significantly reduce morbidity in the elderly and to decrease the costs and resource use in coronary revascularization patients. It is hoped that by understanding the mechanisms of CNS injury associated with CABG, techniques can be developed to decrease the risk of neurologic injury associated with coronary revascularization, whether or not CPB is used. Definitive conclusions regarding outcomes after best practice CPB or BHS await large-scale, risk-stratisfied multicenter trials.

Abstract
A new concept for high-resolution ophthalmoscopy is presented. The method is an alternative to the use of adaptive optics. It is based in deconvolving a retinal image from simultaneously acquired multiple ocular wave-front aberration and aberration-distorted fundus images. A computer simulation of the procedure using actual ocular wave-front aberration data that shows the validity of the method is first presented. Experimental results obtained from an artificial eye serve both to probe the method in a situation similar to the real eye and to introduce the required preprocessing of the retinal images. Finally, results from a real human retina are presented, and the potential of the technique is discussed.

Abstract
Several extracts obtained from Bolivian medicinal plants have been evaluated for cytoprotective activity on ethanol-induced ulcer formation in rats. Preliminary results suggest, that the majority of the plants tested showed a significant activity, the aqueous extracts of Phoradendron crassifolium and Franseria artemisioides being the most active, exerting a cytoprotective activity comparable to atropine. The analysis of the chemical constituents of the extracts studied showed the presence of tanins, saponins, flavonoids and coumarins.
