Abstract
Abstract
Study question
Is letrozole pre-treatment a cost-effective option in improving symptoms, sonographic features, and reproductive outcomes in women with adenomyosis, undergoing IVF treatment?
Summary answer
Only two months of low dose letrozole pre-treatment is as effective as GnRH-agonist in symptomatic adenomyosis while significantly reducing the cost of treatment.
What is known already
About 20%–25% of women undergoing IVF present with adenomyosis and many of them suffer from dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia. Adenomyosis is often underdiagnosed and neglected uterine pathology which has a major bearing on the quality of life and fertility. Since adenomyosis is an estrogen-dependent disorder, letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor (controls estrogen production) is reported to be effective in improving symptoms of adenomyosis similar to GnRH-agonist but its role as before treatment IVF is unclear. Although GnRH-agonist is an established and effective pre-treatment option, is expensive and comes with the concerns like menopausal symptoms, increased gonadotropin doses, and duration of stimulation.
Study design, size, duration
This longitudinal, randomized cohort study was conducted at a tertiary-care hospital during June-2019 and November-2021. 194 adenomyosis women with symptoms undergoing fresh-cycle IVF, were screened and 147 recruited. These women were resistant to OCPs/progestins for symptomatic relief. 72 patients were treated with letrozole and 75 with GnRH-agonist for 2 months, and changes in their sonographic features and symptoms were evaluated before and after treatment. Reproductive outcomes were also compared between the treatment groups after IVF.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
Adenomyosis was diagnosed on 2D-TVS according to MUSA criteria. Among them, 72 patients were treated with 2.5 mg letrozole (only thrice weekly instead of conventional 2.5mg/daily) and 75 women were treated with GnRH-agonist depot (3.6mg/month) for 2 months. Patients were evaluated before and after 2 months of treatment for improvements in dysmenorrhea (VAS score) and menorrhagia (PBAC score), and quantitative scoring of sonographic features. Reproductive outcomes were also compared after both treatment.
Main results and the role of chance
The majority of women had 3-4 sonographic criteria on TVS (median of 3), such as irregular or interrupted junctional zone (79.49%), asymmetrical thickening of the myometrium (71.15%), globular uterus (43.59%), and myometrial cyst (33.33%). Significant reductions in the sonographic severity scores for diffuse adenomyosis, adenomyoma, and asymmetry in myometrial thickness were observed following both the treatment (p < 0.05). The effects of both the treatments were comparable in terms of severity of sonographic features (p > 0.05). Significant decreases in dysmenorrhea (letrozole: pre-7.76±1.6, post-1.74±0.58; GnRH-agonist: pre-7.92±2.1, post-0) and menorrhagia (letrozole: pre-169±31, post-73±18; GnRH-agonist: pre-171±25, post-12±6) were observed after 2 months in both the treatment (p < 0.05). Since GnRH-agonist treated women experienced cessation of menstruation, the VAS and PBAC scores were not directly comparable between the groups after treatment. All fresh cycle IVF women were included to understand the effect of pre-treatment of these women. Following fresh cycle IVF, clinical pregnancy (23.61%, 25.33%), miscarriage rate (35.29%, 36.84%), and live birth rate (12.5%, 13.33%), respectively for letrozole and GnRH-agonist groups were comparable (p > 0.05). The cost of the treatment was 19 times less with letrozole pre-treatment when compared with GnRH-agonist, while a comparable reduction in symptoms and IVF outcome parameters were observed.
Limitations, reasons for caution
A possible limitation is the lack of a proper blinding due to different routes of administration of the therapies. In the absence of a standardized classification of severity, we have used the TVS based scoring proposed by Lazzeri et al (2018), which is not universally accepted or independently validated.
Wider implications of the findings
Low-dose letrozole pre-treatment for 2 months is an attractive option before IVF for symptoms relief and comparable reproductive outcome to that of GnRH-agonist but with lower cost and without over-suppression of pituitary. This protocol may also be extended to women in general who are suffering from symptomatic adenomyosis.

Abstract
Abstract
Study question
Do genetic components and functional annotation/s in eutopic endometrium share significant difference to influence diagnosis in adenomyosis?
Summary answer
An integrated clinico-transcriptomic approach chalk the chief individual as well as hub genes in women with adenomyosis to set the algorithm for improved diagnosis.
What is known already
Adenomyosis often document similar presentation/s to other gynecological diseases including endometriosis making the diagnosis difficult. Differentially expressed transcripts and proteins were identified by transcriptomic analysis and genome-wide profiling of eutopic and ectopic endometrial samples in women with endometriosis. Biological networking and functional enrichment analysis enable prioritization of candidate genes for validation purpose in target tissue. Recently, key pathways in proliferative stage of adenomyosis at transcriptome level were documented in eutopic endometrium. However, characterization of functional annotations may assist clinicians to evaluate if they share systematic correlations predictive of ultrasonographic finding/s for help in everyday practice in diagnosing adenomyosis .
Study design, size, duration
Microarray datasets (GSE7307 and GSE78851) were selected from Gene Expression Omnibus database (GEO), which contains endometriosis, adenomyosis and normal endometrial tissues. An in-depth bioinformatic analysis was done to determine differentially expressed genes (DEGs) on GEO2R platform; followed by gene ontology (GO), KEGG pathway enrichment and protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis by DAVID (http://david.ncifcrf.gov) and Cytoscape (version 3.8.2) respectively. PPI network was predicted further using a search tool, STRING (http://string-db.org; version 11.0) for retrieval of interacting genes.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
Eutopic endometrial samples were obtained during window of implantation from women (n = 10) with endometriosis, adenomyosis and adenomyosis-associated-endometriosis as diagnosed by laparoscopy, and, trans-vaginal ultrasound (TVUS) between March to December 2021 from Institute of Reproductive Medicine, Kolkata. Counterpart/s of male sub-fertility, defined by World-Health-Organization criteria (5th edition) was treated as control (n = 10). In-silico findings were validated by quantitative-real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). TVUS findings and gene expression/s were correlated by Spermann-rank correlation test. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Main results and the role of chance
A total of 4474 and 1061, significant DEGs (log fold-change>1, p < 0.05) were identified from datasets of endometriosis and adenomyosis respectively. GO function/s included common biological processes and molecular function/s, namely, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), metallopeptidase activity and extracellular matrix remodelling. EMT and Wnt signaling ranked top position/s in KEGG pathway enrichment. Among sixty-four common DEGs, four genes, namely, SERPINA1, MMP11, THBS1, MMP7 have maximal node degree (>2) and MCODE (k = 2) in PPI network and were prioritized as hub genes. STRING analysis computed the network of common hub genes between adenomyosis and endometriosis. qRT-PCR findings confirmed down-regulation (p < 0.02) of SERPINA1, and MMP11 in adenomyosis compared to endometriosis and MMP7, and THBS1 in both endometriosis and adenomyosis (p < 0.03) compared to control. Down-regulation (p < 0.003) of SNORD116, MYH11 and PIGR was simultaneously observed in adenomyosis only as compared to endometriosis. Similar gene expression/s as to adenomyosis was documented in combined cohort because of possible presence of common pathology. Interestingly, posterior-wall thickness (PWT) on TVUS was positively correlated with MMP11 (r = 0.88; p<0.03) and SERPINA1 (r = 0.94; p<0.01) in adenomyosis. MMP-11 also exhibited positive correlation with PWT (r = 0.85; p<0.03) and uterine-size (r = 0.88; p<0.03) in endometriosis and combined cohort respectively while MYH11 negatively correlated (r=-0.97; p<0.02) with uterine-size in adenomyosis associated endometriosis.
Limitations, reasons for caution
The heterogeneous nature of data for bioinformatic analysis is a major limitation. Moreover, only mild adenomyosis was considered in the study; hence, results could differ in women with co-occurrence of other gynecological condition/s and/or in severe cases of adenomyosis. The observed differences need to be replicated in larger study cohort/s.
Wider implications of the findings
We identify a set of novel hub genes and enrichment pathways in receptive phase which provide an in-depth discriminative understanding between pathogenesis of endometriosis and adenomyosis. Our results suggest a dys-regulated micro-environment run an algorithmic cascade for perturbed uterine preparation (in adenomyosis), thus providing platform for newer therapeutic targets.

Kalapahar S, Chakraborty P, Shama S, Mitra I, Chattopadhyay R, Ghosh S, Chakraborty M, Chakravarty B. P-390 Serum homocysteine and uterine artery Doppler ultrasound in combination has better predictive accuracy in women with preeclampsia: useful tool for early screening in everyday practice. Abstract
Abstract
Study question
Is serum homocysteine combined with uterine-artery Doppler were effective in predicting preeclampsia (≥140mmHg/≥90mmHg blood pressure) in singleton pregnancy during 11–15 weeks of gestation?
Summary answer
Combination of serum homocysteine levels with uterine-artery Doppler is superior to individual presence of biochemical/ultrasound marker/s making the duo effective for early screening in preeclampsia.
What is known already
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and National Institute for Care and Health Excellence recommend identifying patients who are at high risk of developing preeclampsia based on medical history. Recently, biochemical and ultrasound markers were investigated for prediction of preeclampsia, but none of them were predictably reliable, valid, and suitable for routine clinical use. Increased levels of homocysteine in 1st-trimester, seems to signal onset of preeclampsia later in pregnancy portraying severity of the disease as well. We aimed to identify predictive value of serum homocysteine combined with uterine-artery Doppler in singleton pregnancy during 11–15 weeks of gestation for preeclampsia.
Study design, size, duration
One hundred forty-two consented singleton pregnant women (28-45 years) at gestational age of 11–15 weeks, recruited between January to December 2021 from Institute of Reproductive Medicine, Kolkata were enrolled in the study. Women who used aspirin as a prophylaxis for preeclampsia or were diagnosed to have fetal, structural or chromosomal abnormalities were excluded from the study (n = 7). Maternal age, weight and height, mean arterial pressure, parity, and obstetric history were documented.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
Uterine-artery Doppler ultrasound and serum homocysteine levels were performed transabdominally and using ELISA respectively. Pregnancy outcomes were recorded. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) at optimal cut-off values were determined to predict preeclampsia. Optimal cut-off values for homocysteine levels were calculated using receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC). Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, unpaired t test, and Mann–Whitney U test were used when appropriate. P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Main results and the role of chance
16 cases had preeclampsia (11.26%) of whom 9 had early-onset preeclampsia (6.33%). Baseline characteristics including maternal-age (>35 or<), parity, body-mass- index, and gestational-age at measurement were not significantly different between two groups excepting higher (p < 0.001) mean arterial blood pressure (mmHg) at first trimester (97.2±6.4 vs. 81.1±7.2) in preeclampsia. Preeclamptic women had significantly higher (p < 0.001) serum homocysteine levels (μmol/l) (26.1±3.5 vs 10.2± 5.6) than normotensive pregnant women (n = 119). No difference in mean pulsatility (PI) of uterine-artery was observed (1.78±0.64 vs. 1.72±0.48) excluding significantly high (p > 0.02) in women with early-onset preeclampsia than control (2.11±0.81 vs. 1.39±0.92). However, lower (p < 0.01) gestational age (weeks) (35.4±2.1 vs. 37.6±1.4), and neonatal birth weight (gms) (2937.3±578.2 vs. 3227.6±421.5) with higher (p < 0.001) preterm delivery (25% vs 5.04%), low birth weight (25% vs 5.04%) and neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (12.5% vs. 0.84%) was documented in preeclampsia than control/s. The optimal cut-off value of serum homocysteine with PI levels, from ROC (AUC=0.735, p < 0.001) was superior to individual ROC (AUC=0.451; AUC=0.268). The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV were 67.7%, 70.5%, 1.7%, and 98.5%, respectively using a combination of abnormal serum homocysteine levels with abnormal uterine artery Doppler PI (above 95th percentile) and used as a predictive value for preeclampsia.
Limitations, reasons for caution
The limitation of this study was that there were small cases of early-onset preeclampsia. Additional studies with a larger sample size of early-onset preeclampsia and other models using serum homocysteine, combined with uterine artery Doppler, and maternal characteristic risk factors should be conducted.
Wider implications of the findings
Early screening of preeclampsia by using combination of serum homocysteine and uterine artery Doppler during first trimester (11–15 weeks) at the same visit may be more effective and allows the timing for using early low-dose aspirin prophylaxis in order to prevent preeclampsia.

Chattopadhyay R, Mitra I, Ghosh S, Kalapahar S, Sharma S, Chakraborty P, Chaudhury K, Chakravarty B. P-724 Gene expression profiling of cumulus cells from women with adenomyosis disclose differential pattern to endometriosis: striking the chord for evaluation of a biomarker. Hum Reprod 2022. Abstract
Abstract
Study question
Can metabolic picture of cumulus cell (CC) assess assisted reproductive technology outcome/s in women with adenomyosis/endometriosis and have implications on treatment decisions?
Summary answer
The differentially expressed genes between uterine pathologies explain the functional gap to identify diagnostic/prognostic markers of CC and further dissect molecular contribution to oocyte maturation.
What is known already
A healthy intra-follicular environment supports achievement of oocyte developmental competence (ODC) largely via coordinated CC-follicular fluid (FF) crosstalk. Lately, promising studies document CC of endometriosis are involved in important pathways for ODC like oxidative phosphorylation, metabolism, mitochondrial function and acetylation to name a few. Similar presentation/s of adenomyosis to other gynecological diseases including endometriosis makes the diagnosis difficult. Given that the functional integrities of CCs are susceptible to concurrent pathological conditions, understanding the influence of CCs on oocyte quality compared to routine morphological analysis in presence of deleterious systemic or pelvic conditions may impact clinical decisions.
Study design, size, duration
Twenty-eight consented patients undergoing IVF-ICSI between January to December 2021at Institute of Reproductive Medicine, Kolkata were enrolled. CCs obtained and corresponding oocyte maturation was assessed. They were sub-stratified (n = 9) according to uterine pathologies: adenomyosis (Group A), and endometriosis (Group B) as diagnosed by transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS). Counterpart/s of male sub-fertility, defined by World Health Organization criteria (5th edition) was treated as control (Group C; n = 10). CC from mature MII and immature GV oocytes were compared.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
CCs collected following oocyte-denudation were evaluated by Trypan Blue viability test. Patient age and embryo development were recorded with respect to each cumulus complex. Real Time-quantitative polymerase-chain-reaction (qRTPCR) was performed for glycolysis (PFKP, PKM2, ALDOA, LDHA, TPI1), cholesterol-biosynthesis (CYP51, MVK, PMVK, EBP) and extracellular-matrix (PTGS2, PTX3, TNFAIP6, VCAN) related gene/s known to have important functions in cumulus expansion and metabolism. Patient characteristics and gene expression were correlated by Spearman’s correlation. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Main results and the role of chance
A significant higher (p < 0.001) age (A vs B: 35.77±2.33 vs 25.88± 1.76; A vs C: 35.77±2.33 vs 31.9±1.98) and increased number of oocytes retrieved (A vs B: 11.22±1.56 vs 8.55±0.88) was documented in adenomyosis cohort. Immature oocytes from Group A expressed enhanced cholesterol/steroid biosynthesis, with significant (A vs B; p < 0.01) up-regulation of CYP51, MVK, PMVK, EBP in spite of hyper-estrogenic environment in peripheral blood. On contrary, significant attenuation (p < 0.01) of cholesterol biosynthesis was documented in endometriosis cohort compared to control. Expression of PTGS2, PTX3 and VCAN was down-regulated (p < 0.001) (which together mediate cumulus expansion and oocyte maturation, as well as corpus luteum formation and maintenance and reduce spindle abnormalities) in both Group A and B. Expression/s of CC-PFKP and PKM2 was lower in immature compared to mature oocytes (B vs C; p < 0.01) in endometriosis making the duo responsible for follicular/oocyte growth, and embryonic development. This supports the role in promoting cumulus expansion and oocyte competence. Expression levels of other genes including ALDOA, LDHA, TPI1, and TNFAIP6 were not associated with oocyte maturity, and fertilization in either cohort/s. Interestingly, levels of VCAN, TNFAIP6, PTX3 changed significantly as a function of the subject’s age and embryo development.
Limitations, reasons for caution
Our findings are limited by the relatively small sample size and inherent biological variability of human samples. Several yet known or unknown factors are presumably involved in the implantation process of adenomyosis and/or endometriosis. Multi-centric systematic studies are needed to corroborate these findings and account for the probable confounding factors.
Wider implications of the findings
A differential metabolic dependence of CC play essential role in oocyte competence in adenomyosis influencing cumulus expansion and oocyte maturation. This would be useful to do further studies to know how molecular interface of implantation capacity with live-birth rate would be affected to complement embryonic morphological assessment/s.

Hypertriton Production in p-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 128:252003. Abstract
The study of nuclei and antinuclei production has proven to be a powerful tool to investigate the formation mechanism of loosely bound states in high-energy hadronic collisions. The first measurement of the production of _{Λ}^{3}H in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV is presented in this Letter. Its production yield measured in the rapidity interval -1<y<0 for the 40% highest-multiplicity p-Pb collisions is dN/dy=[6.3±1.8(stat)±1.2(syst)]×10^{-7}. The measurement is compared with the expectations of statistical hadronization and coalescence models, which describe the nucleosynthesis in hadronic collisions. These two models predict very different yields of the hypertriton in charged particle multiplicity environments relevant to small collision systems such as p-Pb, and therefore the measurement of dN/dy is crucial to distinguish between them. The precision of this measurement leads to the exclusion with a significance larger than 6.9σ of some configurations of the statistical hadronization model, thus constraining the theory behind the production of loosely bound states at hadron colliders.

Abstract
Abortion is highly stigmatized in the United States which prevents its accurate measurement in surveys. The list experiment aims to improve the reporting of abortion history. We evaluated whether a list experiment resulted in higher reporting of abortion experiences than did two direct questions. Utilizing data from a representative survey of adult women of reproductive age in Ohio, we examined abortion history using two direct questions and a double list experiment. Through the double list experiment, we asked respondents to report how many of two lists of health items they had experienced; one list included abortion. We compared weighted history of abortion between these measures and by respondent demographic characteristics (age and socioeconomic status). Estimates of abortion history were similar between direct and list experiment questions. When measured with the two different direct question of abortion history, 8.4% and 8.0% of all respondents indicated ever having an abortion and with the list experiment, 8.5% indicated ever having an abortion. In a Midwestern state-level survey, the list experiment did not lead to increases in abortion reporting as compared to the direct questions. Subgroup analyses require larger samples, and future iterations should incorporate related but non-stigmatized control items to reduce misclassification and under-powering of such subgroup analyses.

Chakraborty P, Murawsky S, Smith MH, McGowan ML, Norris AH, Bessett D. How Ohio's proposed abortion bans would impact travel distance to access abortion care. PERSPECTIVES ON SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH 2022; 54:54-63. [PMID: 35442569 PMCID: PMC9324164 DOI: 10.1363/psrh.12191] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/15/2021] [Revised: 04/05/2022] [Accepted: 04/06/2022] [Indexed: 05/30/2023]
Abstract
CONTEXT Since March 2021, the Ohio legislature has been actively considering laws that would ban abortion if the United States Supreme Court overturns the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationally in 1973. METHODS We used a national database of publicly advertised abortion facilities to calculate driving distances for Ohioans before and after the activation of proposed abortion bans. Using a legal analysis of abortion laws following the overturn of Roe, we determined which states surrounding Ohio would continue providing abortion care. We calculated distances from each Ohio county centroid to the nearest open abortion facility in three scenarios: (1) as of February 2022, (2) the best-case post-Roe scenario (two of the five surrounding states continue to offer abortion care), and (3) worst-case post-Roe scenario (no surrounding states continue to offer abortion care). We calculated population-weighted distances using county-level data about women aged 15-44 years from the 2019 American Community Survey. RESULTS In February 2022, all Ohio county centroids were at most 99 miles from an abortion facility (median = 50 miles). The best-case post-Roe scenario shows 62 of Ohio's 88 counties to be 115-279 miles away from the nearest facility (median = 146). The worst-case shows 85 counties to be 191-339 miles away from the nearest facility (median = 264). The current average population-weighted driving distance from county centroid to the nearest facility is 26 miles; the post-Roe scenarios would increase this to 157 miles (best-case) or 269 miles (worst-case). CONCLUSIONS Ohio's proposed abortion bans would substantially increase travel distances to abortion care, impacting over 2.2 million reproductive-aged Ohioans.

Abstract
The polarization of the Λ and Λ[over ¯] hyperons along the beam (z) direction, P_{z}, has been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV recorded with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main contribution to P_{z} comes from elliptic flow-induced vorticity and can be characterized by the second Fourier sine coefficient P_{z,s2}=⟨P_{z}sin(2φ-2Ψ_{2})⟩, where φ is the hyperon azimuthal emission angle and Ψ_{2} is the elliptic flow plane angle. We report the measurement of P_{z,s2} for different collision centralities and in the 30%-50% centrality interval as a function of the hyperon transverse momentum and rapidity. The P_{z,s2} is positive similarly as measured by the STAR Collaboration in Au-Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV, with somewhat smaller amplitude in the semicentral collisions. This is the first experimental evidence of a nonzero hyperon P_{z} in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The comparison of the measured P_{z,s2} with the hydrodynamic model calculations shows sensitivity to the competing contributions from thermal and the recently found shear-induced vorticity, as well as to whether the polarization is acquired at the quark-gluon plasma or the hadronic phase.

Measurement of the Groomed Jet Radius and Momentum Splitting Fraction in pp and Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 128:102001. Abstract
This article presents groomed jet substructure measurements in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector. The soft drop grooming algorithm provides access to the hard parton splittings inside a jet by removing soft wide-angle radiation. We report the groomed jet momentum splitting fraction, z_{g}, and the (scaled) groomed jet radius, θ_{g}. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed at midrapidity using the anti-k_{T} algorithm with resolution parameters R=0.2 and R=0.4. In heavy-ion collisions, the large underlying event poses a challenge for the reconstruction of groomed jet observables, since fluctuations in the background can cause groomed parton splittings to be misidentified. By using strong grooming conditions to reduce this background, we report these observables fully corrected for detector effects and background fluctuations for the first time. A narrowing of the θ_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is seen, which provides direct evidence of the modification of the angular structure of jets in the quark-gluon plasma. No significant modification of the z_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is observed. These results are compared with a variety of theoretical models of jet quenching, and provide constraints on jet energy-loss mechanisms and coherence effects in the quark-gluon plasma.

Abortion travel within the United States: An observational study of cross-state movement to obtain abortion care in 2017. LANCET REGIONAL HEALTH. AMERICAS 2022; 10:100214. [PMID: 36777689 PMCID: PMC9903901 DOI: 10.1016/j.lana.2022.100214] [Citation(s) in RCA: 13] [Impact Index Per Article: 6.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 10/18/2022]
Abstract
Background In the United States, abortion access is often more limited for people who live in states with few abortion facilities and restrictive abortion legislation. Pregnant people seeking an abortion thus often travel to access care. Methods We calculated state-specific abortion rate (number of abortions per thousand women ages 15 to 44) and percentage of patients leaving for abortion care using CDC 2017 Abortion Surveillance data, the Guttmacher Institute's Abortion Provider Census and Pregnancies, Births and Abortions in the United States report, and US Census data. We categorized percent leaving by abortion policy landscape using the Guttmacher Institute's classification of state abortion laws, and by facility density (number of abortion facilities per million women ages 15 to 44), calculated using Census and Guttmacher data. We ran correlational tests between each of our variables (percent leaving, facility density, and policy environment), as well as between percent leaving and facility density within policy environment. Findings In 2017, an average of 8% of US patients left their state of residence for abortion care. Percent leaving varied widely by state: 74% left Wyoming, 57% left South Carolina, and 56% left Missouri, while 13 states had fewer than 4% of patients leaving. States with more restrictive laws averaged 12% of patients leaving, while states with middle ground or supportive laws averaged 10% and 3% leaving, respectively. Pairwise correlations between percent leaving, facility density, and policy score were all statistically significant, though correlations between percent leaving and facility density within policy environment were not. Interpretation Many patients travel across state lines for abortion care. While patients may leave for a range of reasons, restrictive state-level abortion policy and facility scarcity are associated with patients leaving their state of residence. Measurement of Prompt D^{0}, Λ_{c}^{+}, and Σ_{c}^{0,++}(2455) Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2022; 128:012001. Abstract
The p_{T}-differential production cross sections of prompt D^{0}, Λ_{c}^{+}, and Σ_{c}^{0,++}(2455) charmed hadrons are measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. This is the first measurement of Σ_{c}^{0,++} production in hadronic collisions. Assuming the same production yield for the three Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} isospin states, the baryon-to-meson cross section ratios Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}/D^{0} and Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} are calculated in the transverse momentum (p_{T}) intervals 2<p_{T}<12 and 1<p_{T}<24 GeV/c. Values significantly larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions are observed, indicating for the first time that baryon enhancement in hadronic collisions also extends to the Σ_{c}. The feed-down contribution to Λ_{c}^{+} production from Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} is also reported and is found to be larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions. The data are compared with predictions from event generators and other phenomenological models, providing a sensitive test of the different charm-hadronization mechanisms implemented in the models.

Measurement of the Cross Sections of Ξ_{c}^{0} and Ξ_{c}^{+} Baryons and of the Branching-Fraction Ratio BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+}) in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. Abstract
The p_{T}-differential cross sections of prompt charm-strange baryons Ξ_{c}^{0} and Ξ_{c}^{+} were measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The Ξ_{c}^{0} baryon was reconstructed via both the semileptonic decay (Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}) and the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}) channels. The Ξ_{c}^{+} baryon was reconstructed via the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+}) channel. The branching-fraction ratio BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+})=1.38±0.14(stat)±0.22(syst) was measured with a total uncertainty reduced by a factor of about 3 with respect to the current world average reported by the Particle Data Group. The transverse momentum (p_{T}) dependence of the Ξ_{c}^{0}- and Ξ_{c}^{+}-baryon production relative to the D^{0} meson and to the Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}- and Λ_{c}^{+}-baryon production are reported. The baryon-to-meson ratio increases toward low p_{T} up to a value of approximately 0.3. The measurements are compared with various models that take different hadronization mechanisms into consideration. The results provide stringent constraints to these theoretical calculations and additional evidence that different processes are involved in charm hadronization in electron-positron (e^{+}e^{-}) and hadronic collisions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To estimate the prevalence of current and past COVID-19 in Ohio adults. METHODS We used stratified, probability-proportionate-to-size cluster sampling. During July 2020, we enrolled 727 randomly-sampled adult English- and Spanish-speaking participants through a household survey. Participants provided nasopharyngeal swabs and blood samples to detect current and past COVID-19. We used Bayesian latent class models with multilevel regression and poststratification to calculate the adjusted prevalence of current and past COVID-19. We accounted for the potential effects of non-ignorable non-response bias. RESULTS The estimated statewide prevalence of current COVID-19 was 0.9% (95% credible interval: 0.1-2.0%), corresponding to ∼85,000 prevalent infections (95% credible interval: 6,300-177,000) in Ohio adults during the study period. The estimated statewide prevalence of past COVID-19 was 1.3% (95% credible interval: 0.2-2.7%), corresponding to ∼118,000 Ohio adults (95% credible interval: 22,000-240,000). Estimates did not change meaningfully due to non-response bias. CONCLUSIONS Total COVID-19 cases in Ohio in July 2020 were approximately 3.5 times as high as diagnosed cases. The lack of broad COVID-19 screening in the United States early in the pandemic resulted in a paucity of population-representative prevalence data, limiting the ability to measure the effects of statewide control efforts.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the association between sexual minority status and the prevalence of emotional distress and substance use among a nationally-representative sample of youth who reported sexual violence victimization. METHODS Data were from the 2017 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a biennial school-based survey. We restricted the sample to youth who reported any past-year sexual violence victimization. We estimated prevalence ratios using modified Poisson regression with robust error variance to examine associations of sexual minority status with depressive symptomology, suicidality, and substance use. RESULTS Among the 1364 (9.7%) students who experienced sexual violence, 78% were girls. Relative to heterosexual youth, sexual minority youth had higher prevalence estimates for the emotional distress outcomes and marijuana use. Sexual minority status was associated with depressive symptomology (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] 1.33, 95% confidence interval 1.22-1.44), suicidal ideation (aPR: 1.91, 1.66-2.20), medically treated suicide attempt (aPR: 2.74, 1.53-4.93), and past 30-day marijuana use (aPR: 1.29, 1.06-1.57). CONCLUSIONS Among youth who experience sexual violence, sexual minorities may experience more emotional distress and substance use outcomes than heterosexuals. Rape crisis programs and other tertiary interventions should attend to the unique needs of sexual minorities who have been sexually victimized.

A multiplex polymerase chain reaction for the simultaneous detection of the virus and satellite components associated with cotton leaf curl begomovirus disease complex. J Virol Methods 2021; 300:114369. [PMID: 34813823 DOI: 10.1016/j.jviromet.2021.114369] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/11/2019] [Revised: 09/22/2021] [Accepted: 11/18/2021] [Indexed: 11/18/2022]
Abstract
Cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD) is caused by a complex of several whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci Genn.)-transmitted begomovirus species, Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMuV), Cotton leaf curl Kokhran virus (CLCuKoV) and Cotton leaf curl Alabad virus (CLCuAlV) by individual of mixed infection, associated with Cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite (CLCuMB) and several alphasatellites. The disease causes major economic losses in cotton in the Indian subcontinent. For monitoring of epidemiology and development of management strategies of CLCuD, a quick, sensitive and effective method capable of detecting all the begomovirus, betasatellite and alphasatellite components associated with CLCuD is required. With this objective, a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) assay was developed for the simultaneous detection of these three viral components associated with CLCuD of cotton. Primers for each component were designed based on the retrieved reference sequences from the GenBank. Each pair of primers, designed for each of the respective component, was evaluated for its sensitivity and specificity in both the component-specific simplex polymerase chain reaction (sPCR) and mPCR assay. This report identified three viral component-specific pairs of primers which, in all combinations, amplified simultaneously the CP gene (780 nts) of the begomovirus, the βC1gene (375 nts) of the betasatellite and the Rep gene (452 nts) of the alphasatellite associated with CLCuD in the mPCR assays. The amplified products specific to each component produced by these assays were identified based on their amplicon sizes, and the identities of the viral components amplified were confirmed by cloning and sequencing the amplicons obtained in the mPCR. The mPCR assay was validated using naturally CLCuD-affected cotton plants of the fields. This assay will be useful for rapid detection of CLCuD-associated begomovirus, betasatellite and alphasatellite DNA in field samples, extensive resistance screening in resistance breeding programme, and also monitoring epidemiology for detection of virus and its components when symptoms are mild or absent in the plant.

Abstract
The prompt production of the charm baryon Λ_{c}^{+} and the Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} production ratios were measured at midrapidity with the ALICE detector in pp and p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. These new measurements show a clear decrease of the Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} ratio with increasing transverse momentum (p_{T}) in both collision systems in the range 2<p_{T}<12 GeV/c, exhibiting similarities with the light-flavor baryon-to-meson ratios p/π and Λ/K_{S}^{0}. At low p_{T}, predictions that include additional color-reconnection mechanisms beyond the leading-color approximation, assume the existence of additional higher-mass charm-baryon states, or include hadronization via coalescence can describe the data, while predictions driven by charm-quark fragmentation processes measured in e^{+}e^{-} and e^{-}p collisions significantly underestimate the data. The results presented in this Letter provide significant evidence that the established assumption of universality (colliding-system independence) of parton-to-hadron fragmentation is not sufficient to describe charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

Experimental Evidence for an Attractive p-ϕ Interaction. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 127:172301. Abstract
This Letter presents the first experimental evidence of the attractive strong interaction between a proton and a ϕ meson. The result is obtained from two-particle correlations of combined p-ϕ⊕ p[over ¯]-ϕ pairs measured in high-multiplicity pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The spin-averaged scattering length and effective range of the p-ϕ interaction are extracted from the fully corrected correlation function employing the Lednický-Lyuboshits approach. In particular, the imaginary part of the scattering length vanishes within uncertainties, indicating that inelastic processes do not play a prominent role for the p-ϕ interaction. These data demonstrate that the interaction is dominated by elastic p-ϕ scattering. Furthermore, an analysis employing phenomenological Gaussian- and Yukawa-type potentials is conducted. Under the assumption of the latter, the N-ϕ coupling constant is found to be g_{N-ϕ}=0.14±0.03(stat)±0.02(syst). This work provides valuable experimental input to accomplish a self-consistent description of the N-ϕ interaction, which is particularly relevant for the more fundamental studies on partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium.

Abstract
The event-by-event correlations between three flow amplitudes are measured for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, using higher-order symmetric cumulants. We find that different three-harmonic correlations develop during the collective evolution of the medium when compared to correlations that exist in the initial state. These new results cannot be interpreted in terms of previous lower-order flow measurements since contributions from two-harmonic correlations are explicitly removed in the new observables. A comparison to Monte Carlo simulations provides new and independent constraints for the initial conditions and system properties of nuclear matter created in heavy-ion collisions.

Soft-Dielectron Excess in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 127:042302. Abstract
A measurement of dielectron production in proton-proton (pp) collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, is presented in this Letter. The data set was recorded with a reduced magnetic solenoid field. This enables the investigation of a kinematic domain at low dielectron (ee) invariant mass m_{ee} and pair transverse momentum p_{T,ee} that was previously inaccessible at the LHC. The cross section for dielectron production is studied as a function of m_{ee}, p_{T,ee}, and event multiplicity dN_{ch}/dη. The expected dielectron rate from hadron decays, called hadronic cocktail, utilizes a parametrization of the measured η/π^{0} ratio in pp and proton-nucleus collisions, assuming that this ratio shows no strong dependence on collision energy at low transverse momentum. Comparison of the measured dielectron yield to the hadronic cocktail at 0.15<m_{ee}<0.6 GeV/c^{2} and for p_{T,ee}<0.4 GeV/c indicates an enhancement of soft dielectrons, reminiscent of the "anomalous" soft-photon and soft-dilepton excess in hadron-hadron collisions reported by several experiments under different experimental conditions. The enhancement factor over the hadronic cocktail amounts to 1.61±0.13(stat)±0.17(syst,data)±0.34(syst,cocktail) in the ALICE acceptance. Acceptance-corrected excess spectra in m_{ee} and p_{T,ee} are extracted and compared with calculations of dielectron production from hadronic bremsstrahlung and thermal radiation within a hadronic many-body approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Legislative and judicial procedures related to banning abortion after 6 weeks of gestation in Ohio occurred from November 2018 to July 2019. These activities could have increased the belief that abortion has become illegal even though the 6-week abortion ban has never been in effect to date. OBJECTIVE We sought to determine the prevalence and correlates of holding the belief that abortion is illegal in Ohio and to evaluate whether this belief increased over the time in which the 6-week abortion ban was introduced, passed twice, and then blocked in Ohio. STUDY DESIGN We analyzed data from the first wave of the Ohio Survey of Women, a population-based survey of adult, reproductive-aged Ohioan women conducted from October 2018 to June 2019. During each of the 8 survey months, a median of 240 women (range, 70-761) completed the survey, including the survey question "Based on what you know or have heard, is it legal to get an abortion in your state?" We used multivariable logistic regression to assess the prevalence and correlates of believing that abortion is illegal in the state of Ohio. In addition, we used multinomial logistic regression to evaluate whether this belief increased over the interval during which women completed the survey, which roughly corresponded to the interval marked by legislative and judicial activities surrounding the 6-week abortion ban. RESULTS Most of the 2359 participants understood that abortion is legal in the state of Ohio (64.0%) with the remainder believing it to be illegal (9.8%) or being unsure (26.2%). Correlates of believing abortion to be illegal included younger age, lower socioeconomic status, never married or married status, and Black, non-Hispanic race and ethnicity. Being unsure about legality did not change over time; however, the proportion of women who believed that abortion is illegal increased from the first month (4.5%) to the last month (15.9%) of the study period. Each additional study month was associated with a 17% increase in the odds of believing abortion to be illegal, in both unadjusted and adjusted models (odds ratio, 1.17; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-1.27). CONCLUSION Attempts to restrict abortion access could contribute to women mistakenly believing that abortion is illegal despite it being unsuccessful.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to quantify the prevalence of ever attendance at a crisis pregnancy center (CPC) among adult, reproductive-age women in Ohio and identify demographic factors associated with ever attendance. STUDY DESIGN We analyzed data from the Ohio Survey of Women, a survey of adult, reproductive-age women (N = 2529) conducted in 2018 to 2019. We calculated unadjusted and adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) to evaluate the possible associations between demographic factors and ever CPC attendance. Analyses used statistical weights to be population-representative. RESULTS Analyses are based on women reporting ever (n = 291) or never CPC attendance (n = 2151). Prevalence of ever CPC attendance was 13.5%. Ever CPC attendance was higher among women of Black, non-Hispanic race/ethnicity (adjusted PR, 2.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.4-3.2) and currently in the lowest socioeconomic status (SES) stratum (defined as less than a college degree and annual household income less than $75,000) (aPR, 1.6; 95% CI, 1.1-2.3) compared to those of other race/ethnicity and in the highest SES stratum. CONCLUSIONS Disparities exist among adult women in Ohio regarding their ever use of CPCs. Because CPCs typically are not medical facilities and may provide inaccurate information, future studies should evaluate a wider range of correlates of recent CPC attendance. IMPLICATIONS Findings from a population-based survey of adult, reproductive-age women in Ohio indicate that ever attendance to a CPC for pregnancy-related care is not rare, and this attendance is higher among Black/non-Hispanic women and those of low SES compared to other women.

Diabetes-related intestinal region-specific thickening of ganglionic basement membrane and regionally decreased matrix metalloproteinase 9 expression in myenteric ganglia. Abstract
BACKGROUND The importance of the neuronal microenvironment has been recently highlighted in gut region-specific diabetic enteric neuropathy. Regionally distinct thickening of endothelial basement membrane (BM) of intestinal capillaries supplying the myenteric ganglia coincide with neuronal damage in different intestinal segments. Accelerated synthesis of matrix molecules and reduced degradation of matrix components may also contribute to the imbalance of extracellular matrix dynamics resulting in BM thickening. Among the matrix degrading proteinases, matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) and its tissue inhibitor (TIMP1) are essential in regulating extracellular matrix remodelling.
AIM To evaluate the intestinal segment-specific effects of diabetes and insulin replacement on ganglionic BM thickness, MMP9 and TIMP1 expression.
METHODS Ten weeks after the onset of hyperglycaemia gut segments were taken from the duodenum and ileum of streptozotocin-induced diabetic, insulin-treated diabetic and sex- and age-matched control rats. The thickness of BM surrounding myenteric ganglia was measured by electron microscopic morphometry. Whole-mount preparations of myenteric plexus were prepared from the different gut regions for MMP9/TIMP1 double-labelling fluorescent immunohistochemistry. Post-embedding immunogold electron microscopy was applied on ultrathin sections to evaluate the MMP9 and TIMP1 expression in myenteric ganglia and their microenvironment from different gut segments and conditions. The MMP9 and TIMP1 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) level was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction.
RESULTS Ten weeks after the onset of hyperglycaemia, the ganglionic BM was significantly thickened in the diabetic ileum, while it remained intact in the duodenum. The immediate insulin treatment prevented the diabetes-related thickening of the BM surrounding the ileal myenteric ganglia. Quantification of particle density showed an increasing tendency for MMP9 and a decreasing tendency for TIMP1 from the proximal to the distal small intestine under control conditions. In the diabetic ileum, the number of MMP9-indicating gold particles decreased in myenteric ganglia, endothelial cells of capillaries and intestinal smooth muscle cells, however, it remained unchanged in all duodenal compartments. The MMP9/TIMP1 ratio was also decreased in ileal ganglia only. However, a marked segment-specific induction was revealed in MMP9 and TIMP1 at the mRNA levels.
CONCLUSION These findings support that the regional decrease in MMP9 expression in myenteric ganglia and their microenvironment may contribute to extracellular matrix accumulation, resulting in a region-specific thickening of ganglionic BM.
