Abstract
We demonstrate observation of Raman signals of different analytes adsorbed on carbonaceous materials, such as, chemically reduced graphene, graphene oxide (GO), multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), graphite and activated carbon. The analytes selected for the study were Rhodamine 6G (R6G) (in resonant conditions), Rhodamine B (RB), Nile blue (NBA), Crystal Violet (CV) and acetaminophen (paracetamol). All the analytes except paracetamol absorb and fluoresce in the visible region. In this article we provide experimental evidence of the fact that observation of Raman signals of analytes on such carbonaceous materials are more due to resonance effect, suppression of fluorescence and efficient adsorption and that this property in not unique to graphene or nanotubes but prevalent for various type of carbon materials.

Abstract
Acetaminophen is a widely prescribed drug used to relieve pain and fever; however, it is a leading cause of drug-induced liver injury and a burden on public healthcare. In this study, hepatotoxicity in mice post oral dosing of acetaminophen was investigated using liver and sera samples with Fourier Transform Infrared microspectroscopy. The infrared spectra of acetaminophen treated livers in BALB/c mice show decrease in glycogen, increase in amounts of cholesteryl esters and DNA respectively. Rescue experiments using L-methionine demonstrate that depletion in glycogen and increase in DNA are abrogated with pre-treatment, but not post-treatment, with L-methionine. This indicates that changes in glycogen and DNA are more sensitive to the rapid depletion of glutathione. Importantly, analysis of sera identified lowering of glycogen and increase in DNA and chlolesteryl esters earlier than increase in alanine aminotransferase, which is routinely used to diagnose liver damage. In addition, these changes are also observed in C57BL/6 and Nos2−/− mice. There is no difference in the kinetics of expression of these three molecules in both strains of mice, the extent of damage is similar and corroborated with ALT and histological analysis. Quantification of cytokines in sera showed increase upon APAP treatment. Although the levels of Tnfα and Ifnγ in sera are not significantly affected, Nos2−/− mice display lower Il6 but higher Il10 levels during this acute model of hepatotoxicity. Overall, this study reinforces the growing potential of Fourier Transform Infrared microspectroscopy as a fast, highly sensitive and label-free technique for non-invasive diagnosis of liver damage. The combination of Fourier Transform Infrared microspectroscopy and cytokine analysis is a powerful tool to identify multiple biomarkers, understand differential host responses and evaluate therapeutic regimens during liver damage and, possibly, other diseases.

Abstract
Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDIs) have attracted considerable attention as potential drug molecules in tumour biology. In order to optimise chemotherapy, it is important to understand the mechanisms of regulation of histone deacetylase (HDAC) enzymes and modifications brought by various HDIs. In the present study, we have employed Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (FT-IRMS) to evaluate modifications in cellular macromolecules subsequent to treatment with various HDIs. In addition to CH(3) (methyl) stretching bands at 2872 and 2960 cm(-1) , which arises due to acetylation, we also found major changes in bands at 2851 and 2922 cm(-1) , which originates from stretching vibrations of CH(2) (methylene) groups, in valproic acid treated cells. We further demonstrate that the changes in CH(2) stretching are concentration-dependent and also induced by several other HDIs. Recently, HDIs have been shown to induce propionylation besides acetylation [1]. Since propionylation involves CH(2) groups, we hypothesized that CH(2) vibrational frequency changes seen in HDI treated cells could arise due to propionylation. As verification, pre-treatment of cells with propionyl CoA synthetase inhibitor resulted in loss of CH(2) vibrational changes in histones, purified from valproic acid treated cells. This was further proved by western blot using propionyl-lysine specific antibody. Thus we demonstrate for the first time that propionylation could be monitored by studying CH(2) stretching using IR spectroscopy and further provide a platform for monitoring HDI induced multiple changes in cells.

Abstract
The study of reaction mechanisms involves systematic investigations of the correlation between structure, reactivity, and time. The challenge is to be able to observe the chemical changes undergone by reactants as they change into products via one or several intermediates such as electronic excited states (singlet and triplet), radicals, radical ions, carbocations, carbanions, carbenes, nitrenes, nitrinium ions, etc. The vast array of intermediates and timescales means there is no single "do-it-all" technique. The simultaneous advances in contemporary time-resolved Raman spectroscopic techniques and computational methods have done much towards visualizing molecular fingerprint snapshots of the reactive intermediates in the microsecond to femtosecond time domain. Raman spectroscopy and its sensitive counterpart resonance Raman spectroscopy have been well proven as means for determining molecular structure, chemical bonding, reactivity, and dynamics of short-lived intermediates in solution phase and are advantageous in comparison to commonly used time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy. Today time-resolved Raman spectroscopy is a mature technique; its development owes much to the advent of pulsed tunable lasers, highly efficient spectrometers, and high speed, highly sensitive multichannel detectors able to collect a complete spectrum. This review article will provide a brief chronological development of the experimental setup and demonstrate how experimentalists have conquered numerous challenges to obtain background-free (removing fluorescence), intense, and highly spectrally resolved Raman spectra in the nanosecond to microsecond (ns-μs) and picosecond (ps) time domains and, perhaps surprisingly, laid the foundations for new techniques such as spatially offset Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract
Fluorescence quenching of biologically active carboxamide namely (E)-2-(4-chlorobenzylideneamino)-N-(2-chlorophenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene-3-carboxamide [ECNCTTC] by aniline and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) quenchers in different solvents using steady state method and time resolved method using only one solvent has been carried out at room temperature to understand the role of quenching mechanisms. The Stern-Volmer plot has been found to be linear for all the solvents studied. The probability of quenching per encounter p (p') was determined in all the solvents and was found to be less than unity. Further, from the studies of rate parameters and life time measurements in n-heptane and cyclohexane with aniline and carbon tetrachloride as quenchers have been shown that, the phenomenon of quenching is generally governed by the well-known Stern-Volmer (S-V) plot. The activation energy Ea (or E'a) of quenching was determined using the literature values of activation energy of diffusion Ed and the experimentally determined values of p (or p'). It has been found that, the activation energy Ea (E'a) is greater than the activation energy for diffusion Ed in all solvents. Hence, from the magnitudes of Ea (or E'a) as well as p (or p') infer that, the quenching mechanism is not solely due to the material diffusion, but there is also contribution from the activation energy.

Abstract
Condensation of water droplets during rapid evaporation of a polymer solution, under humid conditions, has been known to generate uniformly porous polymer films. Similar porous films are also formed when a solution of the polymer in THF containing small amounts of water, is allowed to evaporate rapidly under air flow; this suggests that water droplets may be formed during the final stages of film formation. In the presence of added surfactants, the interface of water droplets could become lined with the surfactants and consequently the internal walls of the pores generated, upon removal of the water, could become decorated with the hydrophilic head groups of the surfactant molecules. In a series of carefully designed experiments, we have examined the effect of added surfactants, both anionic and cationic, on the formation of porous PMMA films; the films were prepared by evaporating a solution of the polymer in THF containing controlled amounts of aqueous surfactant solutions. We observed that the average size of the pores decreases with increasing surfactant concentration, while it increases with increasing amounts of added water. The size of the pores and their distribution were examined using AFM and IR imaging methods. Although IR imaging possessed inadequate resolution to confirm the presence of surfactants at the pore surface, exchange of the inorganic counterion, such as the sodium-ion of SDS, with suitable ionic organic dyes permitted the unequivocal demonstration of the presence of the surfactants at the interface by the use of confocal fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract
This paper presents a model study to understand the effect of surfactants on the physicochemical properties of human hair. FT-IR ATR spectroscopy has been employed to understand the chemical changes induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on human scalp hair. In particular, the SDS induced changes in the secondary structure of protein present in the outer protective layer of hair, i.e. cuticle, have been investigated. Conformational changes in the secondary structure of protein were studied by curve fitting of the amide I band after every phase of SDS treatment. It has been found that SDS brings rearrangements in the protein backbone conformations by transforming β -sheet structure to random coil and β -turn. Additionally, AFM and SEM studies were carried out to understand the morphological changes induced on the hair surface. SEM and AFM images demonstrated the rupture and partial erosion of cuticle sublayers.

Abstract
Polymer/Clay offer tremendous improvement in wide range of physical and engineering properties for polymers with low filler loading. In nanotechnology polymer/clay nanocomposites use smectitetype clays that have layered structures. In this work, Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was synthesized by free radical addition polymerization in the presence of high power ultrasound. The Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-Montmorillonite (MMT) clay nanocomposites were synthesized by two different techniques viz., ultrasonic mixing and magnetic stirring. An analysis of the XRD data confirms that the composites are in the nanometer scale. The FTIR spectra show that there is strong interaction between the clay and the polymer that enhances the thermal stability. The thermal stability of the experimental nanocomposite prepared by the two processes is compared. Further analysis of XRD data shows that intercalation as well as exfoliation has taken place in both the types of nanocomposites preparation. An analysis of the TG, DTG curves reveal that the thermal stability is found to increase by nearly 30% for ultrasonic mixing than that of magnetic stirring.

Abstract
Quinones play a vital role in the processes of electron transfer in bacterial photosynthetic reaction centers. It is of interest to investigate photochemical reactions involving quinones with a view to elucidate structure-function relationships in biological processes. Resonance Raman and FTIR spectra of electrochemically generated radical anions of 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone, and 2-methyl-3-phytyl-1,4-naphthoquinone, also known as Vitamin K3 and Vitamin K1, respectively, (model compound for QA in Rhodopseudomonas viridis, a bacterial photosynthetic reaction center) have been reported. The same study has also been extended to 1,4-naphthoquinone for comparison. The vibrational assignments were carried out on the basis of comparison with our earlier time resolved resonance Raman studies on photochemically generated radical anions of 1,4-naphthoquinone and 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (Balakrishnan et al., J. Phys. Chem., 100, (1996), 16472-16478). These in vitro results have been compared with the reported vibrational spectral data under in vivo conditions.
